signed Durazo eh?
Thats a curious note. Numbers from minors looked good for all the boys coming back, even DeSalvo.
9 Ks in 5 IP for Hughes is a nice start too
An interesting article this morning by Dan Graziano of the Newark Star Ledger. I am a fan of Joe Torre’s, but I felt this article pointed out his shortcomings while still acknowledging that he’s had success with his methods in the past.
“Stubborn Torre Article”:http://www.nj.com/starledger/s.....038;coll=1
good article. although Joe is wrong, he did have a chance to pitch him. He just didn’t take advantage.
That is what is so frustrating about Joe. He keeps running Kyle out there. Kyle has had 3 1-2-3 innings the entire year!!! They also need to tell him stop throwing over so much!! When was the last time you picked someone off?? He threw the ball away last night with the runner standing on the base!! HELLO!!! Wake up, can’t you glance over and see him standing there. NO you make a snap throw and throw it away.
Jennifer, I agree with you that there have been places to put in Edwar. And when I saw Kyle Farnsworth in there last night (I was flipping channels last night), I thought my eyes were deceiving me.
It seems like it takes a lot to earn Torre’s trust, but once you have it, it takes even more to lose it. What’s particularly frustrating is that when there’s been no choice, like with Cano and Wang, the “newbies” have done pretty well. I know he has pressure like almost no other manager to win every game, and so the margin for error is small, but when your trusted soldiers are simply not doing the job (right now Damon and Farnsy, specifically), you have to go to plan B at least for a break in the action.
What from 11 years about Torre don’t you understand? He will keep running guys out there until they fall flat on their face. He shows trust in vets. He makes young guys really earn their way.
Its an accurate column but, I disagree completely with the notion of using Edwar in 8th innings. Frankly, that would be dumb.
No question, he should be in the mix more. I thought Saturday night would have been the perfect situation to use him (rather than Bruney) in Tampa.
8th innings? Should be Vizcaino for several reasons. First, he has pitched well for over a month. Second, he can pitch everyday, something that is important for the 8th inning guy. Third, he is a veteran. I don’t want rookies in that role.
No question, Edwar should see a little more time. Tonight would be the perfect time to put him out there if the need arises. The Jays have already seen Vizcaino, Proctor and Bruney in this series. A new pitcher, with a different look, could throw off their timing at the plate.
No, Edwar should not be in the 8th inning, and I agree that Viz has definitely earned the right to be Mr. 8th Inning Guy. Certainly Farns has done all he could to give the job away.
Good point about trying to get him in tonight’s game. I’d like to see him again. First appearance was fantastic (storybook, really), the second one less so. But since no one else has really stepped up to claim any job out there on a consistent basis, then, Edwar deserves as much a chance to do so as the others.
Matt Desalvo was decent for two starts then he turned into Rick Ankiel and couldn’t throw a strike. In his last game, it was so bad, if I remember correctly, he walked 3 straight and threw maybe one strike total. Hopefully he straightened himslef out in Scranton.
Watching Kyle last night was interesting. First, his bonehead play in trying to pick off a runner standing on the base. Then he got rocked on a couple of pitches (saved again by a nice play by Phillips). Then after giving up the go ahead run in a crucial game, the fans boo him as he is leaving the field. YESHD showed a close-up of him and he was mumbling to himself listening to the boos. It looked to me that he was cursing the fans under his breath for booing. What does he expect? Is he that clueless that he was on thin ice with everyone already, and this was just the last straw? What arrogance!
I believe that stadium fans were wrong for booing A-Rod last year and felt that they were stupidly trying to run the best player in baseball out of town. But in this case I think the boos toward Kyle were justified.
Edwar in the 8th?
Maybe in Scranton.
These are the same people who wanted Bruney in the 8th and Vizcaino out of town.
So I’ll take it with a grain of salt.
AM I THE ONLY ONE THAT SAW FARNWORTH(LESS) SMERK AS HE WAS BEEING BOOED OFF OF THE FIELD LAST NIGHT!?!?!?! This guy is a cancer in the dugout and thinks WAAAAAY too highly of himself and his stuff. He needs to be traded today. I don’t even care if the Yanks pay his entire salary, just get him out of NY.
Jose Contreras anyone??? He could be a good long middle reliever when Igawa blows up in the first & second inning…
I wouldn’t touch Contreras. He has already flopped in NY, his stuff is 5-7 MPH slower than it was a year ago, he is 9-20 since the AS Break of last year, and is owed 20 million on his contract.
Why would the Yankees want to touch him? That would be like taking two steps backward in their efforts to revamp the team and organization.
Fact is, there is not much out there. Taking on more old players with bad contracts is no solution. It just creates bigger problems.
The most important “acquisitions” at the deadline might just be, Jeff Karstans, Phil Hughes and Jason Giambi.
Torre on replacing Farnsworth as the 8th inning guy: “I’d have to see something really bad from him where he’s very inconsistent and I haven’t seen that.”
What is Joe Torre smoking?
Farnsworth in comparison to Proctor, Vizcaino, Bruney, Myers, and Villone (none of whom I’m crazy about, but all better options than Farnsworth):
Hits per inning: Farnsworth is the only one with more than a hit per inning
H/9: Farnsworth cracks double digits with 10.33 H/9IP!!
ERA: Farnsworth: 4.46; Vizcaino: 4.53; everyone else
Some of my last post seemed to get cut off. Here’s the rest…
ERA: Farnsworth: 4.46; Vizcaino: 4.53; everyone else
