As I was sitting here in the press box working on my story, I noticed a rainbow over Yankee Stadium.

So either the Yankees are headed for the playoffs or Scott Boras is in town looking for that pot o’ gold.

Gorgeous! Thanks, Pete.

2. jp July 19th, 2007 at 6:06 pm

great stuff

3. Thurman July 19th, 2007 at 6:15 pm

Maybe there’s a pot of A-Rod at the end of that rainbow?

4. mel July 19th, 2007 at 6:22 pm

Where I live, I see rainbows everyday, but I got to admit that’s nicest one I’ve ever seen!

5. Matt July 19th, 2007 at 6:26 pm

maybe that mean Cashman will go after Eric Gagne and send Kyle Farnsworth to A ball.

6. kasey July 19th, 2007 at 6:50 pm

it’s the latter.

great pitcure, though.

7. Alan July 19th, 2007 at 6:53 pm

both, peter….both !

8. Joe from Long Island July 19th, 2007 at 7:12 pm

Peter – Your photo here reminded me of something. I took a tour of the Stadium last weekend, with my wife’s alumni group from Adelphi University. When they took us to the press box, and sat us down, I noticed that I was sitting (according to the sign) in seat #15, reserved for the Journal News. I thought, my gosh, is this Pete’s seat? If so, Pete has a great seat for the games!

9. jennifer July 19th, 2007 at 7:15 pm

I saw that leaving the city tonight.

10. lbwvw July 19th, 2007 at 7:24 pm

rOfL pOwNeD!

11. JeffG July 19th, 2007 at 8:05 pm

Nice shot Pete.

Do you mind if I use it on my site? Link and credit to you, of course.

12. Stuart July 19th, 2007 at 8:11 pm

SHelly Duncan hit his 25 HR tonight in the 3rd inning….

He is 27 and has never played in the big leagues….

sounds rationale to you?????

Ramirez not pitched in 2 weeks, were his 1st 2 outings that bad???

Who are the Yanks saving from being waived??Villone, myers, Nieves? Whom??????

13. jennifer July 19th, 2007 at 8:21 pm

Stuart my bet is, that Kei will be sent down after he pitches game 1 to make room for Matt. Than matt will be sent down, and SHelley Duncan will be given a shot. Than Shelley is gone to make way for Phil.

Mark this down, lets see if i’m right.

14. RJPinstripes July 19th, 2007 at 8:29 pm

Both Pete! Good shot too!

15. Wait Til Next Year July 19th, 2007 at 8:30 pm

Really very bad loss. I know the 3 out of 4 rationale and all that. But when your ace is on the mound cruising and it all goes south in 5 minutes, it is tough to take. We have no margin of error, thaks to the 2-9 streak after the positive streak. To let this game get away is terrible. I got the feeling that with the 2 runs coming before the 1st out, that the Yankees thought it would be easy and just relaxed and stopped “grinding” as Torre likes to say. Don’t really blame them as it is hard to maintain that level of in tensity every day. But that is what the big hole we are in is all about. In order to climb all the way out, we have to do what other teams do not, namely grind it every single inning and game. So let me dissent, this was a bad loss.

16. Joe from Long Island July 19th, 2007 at 8:53 pm

No loss is a good loss. But going undefeated is irrational. Heck, they won one – Monday, with Igawa going -that I thought they were going to lose. No one game makes or breaks. It’s the overrall that does that to you. Heck, they won 11 out of last 15 – that’s .786.

17. Joe from Long Island July 19th, 2007 at 9:07 pm

Jennifer, you may be right. Look at Jack Cust with Oakland – he’s a rookie DH, and he’s effectively pushed Mike Piazza out of the job. Though the DH slot might get pretty crowded, with Damon, Duncan and possibly Giambi next month.

I think that Farnsy and Mike Meyers will be gone by the July 31 trade deadline. That will open up a spot for Hughes.

18. Pete Feng July 19th, 2007 at 10:20 pm

This is a wonderful picture. It ease me the pain after a tough lost to Blue Jay earlier today this afternoon.

19. Pete Feng July 19th, 2007 at 10:28 pm

Joe from Long Island
I am with you. Let’s take one game at a time in the series with D-Rays this weekend and start another wining streak. We should be able to take three out of four, but a sweep is what I am looking for.

20. Keith July 19th, 2007 at 10:37 pm

Yanks have dug themselves a hole so they must win every game they can now…..especially with this easy schedule….we need another 9-10 game winning streak to really get back in this….I wish the yanks would shake some things up…..but I guess(hope) it may be coming….shuffle the bullpen and trade Farnsworth, bring up Britton, DL Proctor with a tired arm, bring up Brower, he has 17 saves in SWB, use Ramirez or send him back down, he will now be rusty in his next appearance btw, please cut Nieves and get anybody to catch, why do we insist on keeping him…..and DL Damon and bring up Shelly Duncan to DH and bat Melky leadoff….why is Cashman not doing anything…please don’t be lulled into thinking this team as currently constituted is good enough….

21. kris July 19th, 2007 at 11:15 pm

I think it’s the former.

This is the type of games the sox have been winning all year. It is why they are ahead by this much. The sox have been very lucky this whole season. I hope the law of averages catches up with them before it’s too late.

22. kris July 19th, 2007 at 11:19 pm

the yanks are making the playoffs.

23. T.J. July 19th, 2007 at 11:25 pm

Great pic Pete. I agree with you it could mean a sign of hope and not to give up on Yankees.

24. Alan July 19th, 2007 at 11:34 pm

There must be something in the managerial “air” tonight. In Fenway…top of the 6th…BoSox up 2-1…..Dice-K, that joke, loads the bases with NO OUTS….Francona leaves him in….MORON !….what happens ? next batter singles in 2 and they go down 3-2….THEN, after the lead is lost, Francona brings in a fresh reliever who, although he gives up a hit….retires 3 batters and allows NO MORE RUNS….Thanks, Terry…for helping show us Yankees’ Fans that we don’t have the only manager that sometimes leaves his common sense at the door, before 1st pitch !

25. kris July 19th, 2007 at 11:36 pm

Our team is now what, 12-27 in games decided by less than two runs? Contrast this with the sox who are like, 39-0 in the “clutch”? If the records for these “close games” become what they are expected to be (pretty much half-half), then an epic collapse is imminent for Boston, unless the sox just continue to be incredibly lucky this season. In that case, I hope things catch up to them with a vengeance next season.

26. mel July 19th, 2007 at 11:50 pm

Alan,

It’s also good to know that Meyers is not the only LOOGY who can’t get the job done.

27. Wait Til Next Year July 19th, 2007 at 11:55 pm

Thanks, Alan. Keep us posted on the Bosox.

28. mel July 19th, 2007 at 11:58 pm

Bukvich is my new favorite reliever. He went so high & tight on both Manny & Youk that they hit the deck. And he got Youk to strike out swinging.

29. Mehdi July 20th, 2007 at 12:12 am

Homerun for Kernerko (sp?) 4-2 W.Sox Bottom of the 8th about to start. If any of you want some comic relief go over to any red sox board and check out their game thread. They are losing their minds. They have a 7 game lead and you’d think they were seven back. They’ve still got that loser mentality where they are always afraid of the sky falling…I better shut up and stop jinxing this. Lowell just got on first with a bloop.

30. Wait Til Next Year July 20th, 2007 at 12:14 am

stpo the jinx.

31. Wait Til Next Year July 20th, 2007 at 12:14 am

stop that is

32. Mehdi July 20th, 2007 at 12:15 am

Whew Varitek grounded into a DP and the next schmuck flew out. Top of the 9th. Come on W.Sox get a couple more to pad it. You never know with Boston, they are so hot and cold.

33. Wait Til Next Year July 20th, 2007 at 12:22 am

Thanks, Mehdi. Keep us posted. And keep the results as is. Bring them home.

34. Mehdi July 20th, 2007 at 12:23 am

Is it required that you look like you listen to Creed if you play for the Red Sox?

35. Alan July 20th, 2007 at 12:29 am

BoSux down 4-2 in the ninth inning…2 outs for the WhiteSox in the top of the inning, with runners on 1st and 2nd….Top of the 8th, Okajima gave up a Homer to extend the deficit for the Dastardly Ones…DANG….Konerko grounds out…..OK…4-2 lead gonig into the bottom of the 9th….GO WHITE SOX ( gee, I hate saying that ! )

36. Mehdi July 20th, 2007 at 12:30 am

W.Sox had a chance to pad but they stranded two. Bottom of the 9th coming up.

37. mel July 20th, 2007 at 12:31 am

No lead is safe. Bobby Jenks on the mound!

38. mel July 20th, 2007 at 12:31 am

BTW, where is Drew?

39. Wait Til Next Year July 20th, 2007 at 12:33 am

keep us posted and, again, bring them home. you are patriots.

40. Josh July 20th, 2007 at 12:37 am

Pheww Game Over.. We didn’t lose any ground!

41. Ryan July 20th, 2007 at 12:37 am

This ballgame is ova!

I hate Hawk

42. Mehdi July 20th, 2007 at 12:38 am

and down they go 1,2,3. The lead is still 7. I love it. I dedicate this last post to all the Red Scum knuckle heads who were falling over themselves with laughter when we went down today. Funny how their game mirrored ours so much.

43. Wait Til Next Year July 20th, 2007 at 12:38 am

which games?

44. Josh July 20th, 2007 at 12:39 am

With any luck the Chi Sox will rough up Beckett tomorrow and we can beat Tampa to get within another game of our AL East crown.

45. Wait Til Next Year July 20th, 2007 at 12:40 am

good job, mehdi.

46. Alan July 20th, 2007 at 12:40 am

the BoSux Lose !!!…..Now I will sleep like a baby…we lose NO Ground today ( again I would have preferred we GAIN ground ) but tomorrow is another game and tomorrow we GAIN A GAME…You’ll See !!! Over and Out…Good Night ALL !!!

47. Alan July 20th, 2007 at 12:41 am

Josh….you are KING of CLUB POSITIVE…GO YANKEES FOREVER !

48. Josh July 20th, 2007 at 12:42 am

Haha, I try to stay positive… atleast until Sat.’s doubleheader!

49. mel July 20th, 2007 at 12:44 am

Aaah, watching the last half of the Boston game was so satisfying. Almost makes up for today’s loss. Konerko & Jeter are the only members of the Okajima Homer Club.

50. Josh July 20th, 2007 at 12:45 am

That’s a club that should have many more members by the end of the year.

51. Wait Til Next Year July 20th, 2007 at 12:47 am

I’ll be there for both ends of the dh on Saturday. I’ll do my best.

52. mel July 20th, 2007 at 12:49 am

Josh,

LOL. The Okajima Homer Club or Club Positive? Or both?

53. Josh July 20th, 2007 at 12:52 am

I’m going to say both clubs!

Although people will tend to jump off the bandwagon if the Yanks don’t win every game. But then again, why shouldn’t they win them all?! LOL

54. Josh July 20th, 2007 at 12:54 am

Anyone who think the Indians have already wonthe Wild Card must be crazy. Sabathia is having a terrible June, and the rest of there rotation is pretty much in shambles to be honest. Lee and Westbrook have been extremely inconsistent, and their thunderous bats can’t carry them every game.

55. mel July 20th, 2007 at 12:59 am

I had to share this with you guys, I almost spit out my green tea.

Dave__Guest_ I read somewhere that J D Drew was a devout Christian but I don’t see how that could possibly be true, considering how eager he was to steal seventy million dollars from the Red Sox.
Gordon_Edes Dave, a little harsh, don’t you think?

56. Alan July 20th, 2007 at 1:19 am

we are only 6 games back in the loss column with 69 games to play to CLEVELAND and BOSTON ???? Oh, yes….this is gonna be fun to watch !!!

57. Global Warming(DL Damon Call-Up Shelly) July 20th, 2007 at 1:21 am

Desalvo/Igawa Double Header.

That has the potential to be a very looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong day.

58. Col July 20th, 2007 at 3:02 am

It would be nice to see Posada get two days off. Let Neives start again for Mussina. Mussina will then have no reason to whine, maybe give us a good start?

Posada takes the day game, catching DeSalvo. Neives the night game, catching Igawa. So Posada can take the day game for Pettitte the next day and the night game for Clemens the next.

But will have to wait and see what Torre will do.

Let’s play…will Torre overuse Posada?!

59. Joey_V July 20th, 2007 at 3:08 am

Mel ==> If you wrote “I read somewhere that J D Drew was a devout Christian but I don’t see how that could possibly be true, considering how eager he was to steal seventy million dollars from the Red Sox”, then I’m not humored….I suggest references to religion are not cool!

60. E-ROC July 20th, 2007 at 4:31 am

Trade Farns to the Phillies for Rod Barajas. Barajas is just an upgrade over Nieves which we do need because Nieves is almost an automatic out. That doesn’t help things considering the underachievers that are Damon, Abreu, and Cano. Giambi is coming back which will make things a little difficult since Giambi can’t do anything in the field. Doug doesn’t help much either considering how good Phillips plays first base. Damon CAN play the outfield but he isn’t an upgrade over Cabrera. Cashman has some work to do; some serious work to do.

61. jennifer July 20th, 2007 at 8:28 am

I read that DL Drew is on the dl.

* Holding pattern for Drew: Drew continues to be in on-again, off-again mode as he battles right hamstring woes. The left-handed hitter exited Friday’s game with recurring tightness and then returned to the lineup on Monday night. But manager Terry Francona opted not to play him Thursday.

“He’s kind of stuck in between,” Francona said. “He wants to play, we want him to play. He slipped on the fly ball last night. I don’t think that helped. Then he hit a ball off his ankle, which I don’t think helped any more. We’re trying to do what’s right and it’s not very easy.”

It was particularly tough to keep Drew out of the lineup on Thursday, considering his history (.391 average, three hours, four RBIs) lifetime against White Sox starter Javier Vazquez.

At least at this point, Francona said the Red Sox are not considering the disabled list for Drew.

“If we had to, but I don’t think he feels like that’s necessary and that’s probably ahead of where we are,” said Francona. “This isn’t a tear. I don’t think this is something we want to linger. We want him to be OK and I thought we got there. Evidently we didn’t.” *

62. jennifer July 20th, 2007 at 8:30 am

Good news on this front

*Yanks seek more help to ID falling fan
By Michael O’Keeffe
July 19th 2007
The Yankees may be zeroing in on the lout who fell on a tourist during the July 8 game against the Los Angeles Angels at the Stadium, breaking the Seattle-area schoolteacher’s neck. The team’s front office has been flooded with phone calls from people who witnessed the accident in the upper left-field deck at Yankee Stadium, team spokesman Howard Rubenstein said. About a dozen of
those callers have provided credible information.
“The team is in the process of following up on those calls,” Rubenstein said last night. Doctors say Paul Robinson, 53, is lucky he was not killed or paralyzed when a man fell on him, snapping his head with enough force to break the vertebra under his skull.
Robinson flew home this week to Kirkland, Wash., in a private plane chartered by the Yankees. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Stephen Kaufman, Robinson’s attorney, at (718) 822-0500 or (212) 349-2000 or the Yankees at (718) 579-4420.

63. Doreen July 20th, 2007 at 8:45 am

Jennifer –

Thanks for that information. It’s good to know that they’re trying to do something. No matter how bad that person thought things would be for him if he stepped forward voluntarily, they’re going to be a whole lot worse if he’s found!

The Star Ledger had a nice feature story on Matt DeSalvo.

“Matt DeSalvo Story”:http://www.nj.com/yankees/ledg.....038;coll=1

64. jennifer July 20th, 2007 at 8:50 am

Yeah if the Yankees find him, (never mind the legal trouble he’d be in) They should ban him from the stadium for life. I mean how do you do that to someone and leave. And his friends who helped him leave should be in trouble too.

65. jennifer July 20th, 2007 at 8:56 am

Good article thanks Doreen.

66. Doreen July 20th, 2007 at 8:58 am

Jennifer –

You’re welcome.

Yup, I agree, the “friends” who “helped” should also be in trouble.

69. Mike NYY July 20th, 2007 at 10:12 am

The Yankees lost Chuck that’s why

70. Mike NYY July 20th, 2007 at 10:13 am

I think we actually got a break with the DeSalvo/Igawa day being a DH. We might actually have a shot to split

71. Todd Drew July 20th, 2007 at 10:13 am

Chuck,
The flags have been at half-mast on this homestand for NYPD Officer Russel Timoshenko who was killed last week.

72. saucy July 20th, 2007 at 10:15 am

thanks todd. i heard about the officer and noticed they were at half mast this week, but i guess i really never put 2 and 2 together…

73. Doreen July 20th, 2007 at 10:22 am

Call me crazy, but I have Yankees Encore on in the background while I do some chores around the house. Something I didn’t notice yesterday — the people posting Wang’s ground ball outs (instead of K’s). What a great thing to do! Fun.

74. Todd Drew July 20th, 2007 at 10:33 am

Doreen,
I ran into the “Ground Ball Out posters at the players’ gate after the game. They had a big stack that were laminated beautifully. The Stadium has a great feel when Wang pitches. It’s something special I haven’t felt since El Duque’s first tour.

75. Doreen July 20th, 2007 at 10:40 am

Todd –

Those are the kinds of things that make baseball fun to watch. And players like Wang (I mean the whole package, ot just talent), well, they don’t come along often. If you only watch for wins/losses, you miss a lot of the game, IMHO. Were the GBO people able to greet their player?

76. Bloomy July 20th, 2007 at 10:40 am

Exciting story by Gammons on ESPN blogs today about Joba and Ohlendorf and Hughes.

77. Todd Drew July 20th, 2007 at 10:49 am

Doreen,
Yes, they waited for Wang. There is a guy at all his starts that has a huge “TaiWang poster. They are fun people to hang around with.

78. Jeff NJ July 20th, 2007 at 10:56 am

Bloomy, please post for us non ESPN insiders. I did hear Gammons glowing over Joba on the Michael Kay show Wed. He likes the idea of him coming up and pitching in the pen.

How about this idea, Joba in the rotation, Hughes in the pen?

79. jennifer July 20th, 2007 at 11:06 am

I heard under no circumstances will Hughes go in the pen.

80. Bloomy July 20th, 2007 at 11:06 am

As odd as it may seem, Brian Cashman in many ways is the most relaxed of the GM bunch. On Friday morning, the Yankees are six games behind the Indians in the loss column for the wild card and seven games behind the Red Sox in the AL East (in New England, that’s Anxt Legion), and Cashman on Wednesday took a leisurely drive to Trenton, N.J., to watch Philip Hughes. Cashman is looking to add a first baseman if it isn’t Shea Hillenbrand, find someone to take Kyle Farnsworth, maybe move a Scott Proctor for depth (the NY Post has been on Wilson Betemit), and await the reconstruction of the Yankee pitching staff.

“Unfortunately for the rest of us,” says one AL executive, “the most important addition before the trading deadline will be Hughes.” Cashman watched Hughes dominate on Wednesday, and will give him a couple of starts at Scranton to build up his pitch count and arm strength.

And as Hughes fits in with Chien-Ming Wang, Roger Clemens, Mike Mussina and Andy Pettitte, he is not the only key piece that may fit in place for the final six to eight weeks of the season. There is a possibility that the Yankees will bring fellow Trentonian Joba Chamberlain up to audition for the Joel Zumaya role, and as he gets healthy, Ross Ohlendorf may soon be ready to fit in the middle of the bullpen as well.

Before suffering a back injury, Ohlendorf — who pitched with Chris Young for Scott Bradley at Princeton — looked as if he could be a first-rate middle reliever after coming over from Arizona in the Johnson deal. But Chamberlain has now become the talk of the game. The Yanks’ second pick in the 2006 draft out of Nebraska has drawn comparisons to a cross between Zumaya and Bobby Jenks as a reliever, and Justin Verlander as a starter. He’s 8-1 with 108 strikeouts in 74 2/3 innings between Tampa and Trenton. “He’s 95-99 for seven innings as a starter,” says one scout. “He has Verlander stuff, but if it fell apart, he’d still be Jonathan Broxton.”

Oh.

81. Frank July 20th, 2007 at 11:09 am

I wish we had the kind of starting pitching where we could put Hughes and Joba in the pen for the rest of this year.

But we don’t. Maybe one of them. Joba with his fastball would be better than Hughes in a short stint.

I still think you trade for a Lidge. Not for just this year but for the next few years. It won’t cost Joba or Hughes. Maybe you take 2 of your other pitchers.

82. Mike NYY July 20th, 2007 at 11:12 am

I don’t want Chamberlain in the majors. Maybe after the AA season ends but not before that. i don’t wnat to mess with his development. I`d like to see Ohlendorf get called up though

83. Bloomy July 20th, 2007 at 11:15 am

Why would his development get stunted by being promoted to the majors? Hes obviously got Double A figured out. It would stunt his growth more if he wasn’t promoted to the big league club.

84. Mike NYY July 20th, 2007 at 11:20 am

Why would his development get stunted by being promoted to the majors? Hes obviously got Double A figured out. It would stunt his growth more if he wasn’t promoted to the big league club.

He won’t get as much work

Torre won’t pitch him and he is being trained as a starter

85. Bob from NJ July 20th, 2007 at 11:28 am

Pete, Feinsand’s picture of the rainbow is better. Sorry.

86. Jeff NJ July 20th, 2007 at 11:34 am

Bob, funny you said that, I was thinking the same thing read I read Feinsand’s blog. Time for Pete to upgrade his camera-phone.

87. saucy July 20th, 2007 at 11:40 am

are you kidding? fiensand’s picture is very croooked, includes the tarp on the field, and the sky is darker. my vote is for Pete’s.

88. Dan July 20th, 2007 at 11:41 am

Let Joba remain in the minors for the rest of this year, and start next year in AAA. There is no reason to convert him to a RP now, when he is dominating as a starter.

Let him & Ian Kennedy develop, so that by the middle of next season or the following season we can have one of the most dominating young pitching staffs in baseball. Chien-Ming Wang, Phil Hughes, Joba Chamberlain, Ian Kennedy, and a 5th starter. That would be an incredible pitching staff for years!

89. mel July 20th, 2007 at 11:43 am

I’ve always tolerated Gammons as he’s a respected baseball analyst, but I’m starting to get suspicious of him. O.K. paranoid. I heard that interview with Kay and he was simply orgasmic about Joba. If I were the Yankees I would appreciate the buzz, but not take his “advice” too seriously. Stay with the plan (whatever that may be) for Joba. Some experts are projecting him to be even better than Hughes. Bringing him up and inserting him in the bullpen will help, but it’s going to take a lot more to make the playoffs. I recall we had another pitcher this year that came straight from AA and didn’t fare too well. Who was that? Chase? Clippard?

In the Edes chat someone asked if he would run for president of the Red Sox Nation. He said that someone like Gammons would be a perfect fit instead. Wouldn’t the correct thing to say be “As journalists we would be unable to fulfill such a position.”? Like I said paranoid, but it’s been long established that there is a definite bias against, and some cases hate for the Yankees so there may be an ounce of truth to what I’m saying.

“On Friday morning, the Yankees are six games behind the Indians in the loss column for the wild card and seven games behind the Red Sox in the AL East ”

umm, boston and cleveland have IDENTICAL records right now…

jennifer,

They also had a picture of Jessica Biel wearing a Red Sox shirt. Talked about how she went to Yankee stadium wearing Red Sox gear and she should be president of RSN. I don’t what’s more gross the t-shirt or her teeth. Yuck.

93. saucy July 20th, 2007 at 11:54 am

if they’re a ‘President’ of ‘redsox nation’, does that mean we get to elect a ‘God’ of ‘Yankee Universe’?

Okay, I am a Sox fan who has been known to post on here every now and then. I’m sure you all who get a kick out of this but I admit I am nervous, but then again even when the Yankees were 14 behind I knew this season wasn’t over. I predict the race will go right down to the end of the season and that is what makes being a baseball fan interesting.

98. mel July 20th, 2007 at 12:40 pm

Ray,

No need to worry. There’s no possible way that Boston could blow a 14 game lead.

99. Deep to Left July 20th, 2007 at 12:44 pm

Unprecedented.
