There was some noticeable excitement last night when the Yankees rallied to beat the Blue Jays.

Kyle Farnsworth didn’t lose his job. But he may have to share it. This notebook also has an update on Phil Hughes, who pitched well again in the minors.

Pete….do really think that last night, with the score 4-1, that it would be SO BAD to bring in Edwar ? If he got in trouble OR was off his game, you COULD take him out…I think it would have been a HUGE confidence BOOST to send him out there and give him a chance. It’s not like it was 2-1 and I don’t buy into the HUGE chance that the Jays start smackin’ home runs off him….just my humble opinion though…

So it’s Will Nieves catching today and Kyle Farnsworth pitching batting practice in the 8th inning? I picked a good day not to stop drinking.

    Ditto Alan.

    Where the heck is Edwar?

And where the heck is Shelley Duncan? Or is Brian Cashman happy with a .598 OPS from his DH over the last 6 weeks?

it was 6-1 in the top of the 9th . i thought to myself that edwar might come in but mo’ had already got the 2 outs in the 8th so why not go for the 5 out save . i doubt mo will go today if theres a save opp. sooner or later edwar has gotta pitch . otherwise , whats he doing up here if he’s just gunna sit around . wtf . it seems whenever bruhney walks a batter he always brings the count to 3-2 and then walks him . wtf . to be honest i would rather have bruhney in there than farnsie . it seems vizcaino and mo’ are the only guys i can trust to get outs .

oh yeah , the other thing about bringing in edwar is the importance of these games . every game from here on in is of the upmost importance that just can not be trusted to an extremely young and untested pitcher . anybody notice that torre is actually managing these games .,

Here’s the problem with bringing in Edwar in the 9th inning. If you do, and he struggles, they have nobody to back him up because they used everybody else who was available.

You bring in Mo, you finish with Mo. If Mo struggled in the 9th, he had a guy to back him up (Edwar).

No manager uses his last pitcher in a 6-1 game in the AL. Just not how you do it.

As far as bringing him for the 8th in a 4-1 game? Nope, not the time to do it.

The kid is a rookie who has been in the majors for less than a month. Stop quoting AAA stats as some justification to his “greatness”.

Chase Wright, Jeff DeSalvo and Tyler Clippard all had great control numbers in the minors. As we have seen with them, its a whole different ballgame in the majors.

I would love to see him pitch more. But, not in game deciding situations.

Its not May, its July and this team still needs to make a run. Now is not the time to hold open tryouts.

Edwar has to pitch today because otherwise, Joe will send him down to make room for DeSalvo on Saturday.

WHY IS DAMON STILL LEADING OFF?!!
He shouldn’t even be in the lineup! Does anyone want Damon as the DH over Shelly who has over 2o homeruns. The negatives about Shelly Duncan is that he strikes out and can’t field. However, He would be the DH or PH and striking out a lot isnt much worse than what Damon is doing now! At least he has some pop.

  8. SJ44 July 19th, 2007 at 10:45 am

Why is it automatically a given Shelley Duncan’s numbers would translate at the major league level? He has never played in the majors. Is it realistic to expect him to have some seamless transistion?

Shelley Duncan is not a better player than Johnny Damon. Damon is slumping, and they don’t have anybody on the bench that can replace him. He’s probably going to play until either Giambi is back or they make a deal for a bat.

If Shelley Duncan was a realistic option, he probably would have been up already. There is a reason he is still in the minors and its not because the “man” is holding him back.

  9. Marc July 19th, 2007 at 10:48 am

What do you lose by giving him a shot?

SJ44, would you rather see Damon?

    Should he still leadoff?

you could lose more than you think. maybe the chemistry that has been developing is lost, and we revert into the slump machine from earlier this season. i agree with sj, now is not the time to hold tryouts for spots. every game matters. bringing up shelly to replace damon reeks of bring sheff into play first base for us. how’d that work out? we’ve got something that’s working right now. i realize we need to make some moves, but i’d limit those to 1) back up catcher and 2)bullpen. now, whether we can just reorganize the bullpen with pieces we already have or whether we have to go get something new, i don’t know. that’s what cashman’s paid to do, and as much as he gets bashed here, i trust the guy.

  11. SJ44 July 19th, 2007 at 11:00 am

What do you have to lose? Games, which the Yankees can’t afford to do.

As much as Damon has struggled, they have won 10 of their last 13. I don’t see a lot of expermimenting that should be done when the team is starting to make a run.

Its late July. The time for open tryouts is over. They are trying to make the playoffs and Shelley Duncan is not the answer.

When was the last time you saw the Yankees taking risks with unproven young players, with no ML experience, this late into the season? Not in the last 13 years.

You do it if you have written off the season. Clearly, they haven’t done that so, I don’t see how giving an unproven career minor league player the DH job solves anything.

Keeping him in the leadoff spot? I would keep in there through the rest of the homestand and see how he looks. If he shows signs of breaking out, he stays in the leadoff spot. If not, consider other options.

Everybody wanted Abreu out of the 3 hole because he had a couple of bad games against good pitchers. Last night, 2 hits and helps win the game.

You can’t keep screwing around with the lineup. Guys have to have comfortable roles and you mess with the lineup too much, you mess up the entire lineup. Not just one or two spots.

Believe me, I realize its frustrating watching Damon struggle. However, they don’t have anybody else they can plug in there right now.

A lumbering, career minor leaguers, who can’t hit breaking balls or anything on the outer half is not an upgrade.

Even slumping, Damon is getting his walks, working some counts, and scoring some runs. You get none of that with Duncan.

Plus, with the way the lineup is going right now, I don’t want to move Jeter or Melky because they are both hitting well in their spots in the order right now.

Just gotta hope Girardi is right when he says he think Damon is getting closer. They will need him down the stretch.

  12. JeffG July 19th, 2007 at 11:20 am

Not hitting since last august is not a slump, it’s a decline. How dop you know ANYONE’S minor league numbers translate to the majors: answer, you BRING THEM UP AND SEE.

And saying you cannot use Edwar because these games are all important means Edwar doesn’t pitch at all this season. That’s just dumb logic.

Damon is done, and Edwar is rotting. Winning covers up a lot of managerial mistakes, but it doesn’t mean those mistakes aren’t being made.
