More roster moves for Yankees

Peter Abraham
July

RHP Matt DeSalvo: Optioned to AAA Scranton.

LHP Sean Henn: Recalled from AAA Scranton

C Wil Nieves: Designated for assignment

Jose Molina is in Minnesota and the Yankees are trying to arrange for him to fly to New York tomorrow morning. They are waiting to DFA Nieves to make sure Molina arrives.

Cashman said the opportunity to upgrade to a more experienced player was something he could not pass up. Molina is a .238 career hitter but he has playoff experience and a strong throwing arm.

Cashman called the pace of trade talks across the game “glacially slow” and said he did not expect the Yankees to make a major move. That, of course, could change at any second.

    Farewell Wil, my sweet prince

  2. Huuz

still a good trade for us. molina will literally get a hit twice as often as nieves.

a 26 year-old AA pitcher is no big whup. besides, the Yanks are going to have *LOTS* of dudes to protect from the rule V draft this year, and they’ll need every one of those 40-man roster spots.

better to get something for kennard, than to just lose him in the rule V.

i’m pretty sure he was eligible for it this winter.

How difficult could it be for the Yankees to arrange a flight from Minni? Heck they could ask Arod to borrow air arod.

  4. Andrew

Why not Britton? I really don’t understand why he hasn’t been given more of a chance.

  5. Joe from Long Island

Peter – the word on the blog is that Chris Britton was placed on the 7-day DL at SWB. Do you have any word from the Yanks on this? If serious, this might impact any move of Sparky Proctor. I would think that Farnsy would still be on the block, regardless, given how he’s performed this year.

  6. Ryan

because he went on the Minors DL today.

  7. Andrew

That would make sense then. I wasn’t aware.

    Pete -

Well if Cashman says it, it must be true! No GM would lie to a member of the media, especially 10 days before the trade deadline!

With his rhetoric about the Yankees not “earning” reenforcements a few weeks back what does Cash have to say now that they have cut the BoSox lead in half (ok, they helped) and being w/in several games of the wild card.

Do beat writers find it hard to keep a straight face when GM’s feed them the party line at trade deadlines?

Being a GM must make for lengthy confessions for Theo, JP, Cash et al. Guess it goes w/ the territory

  9. Horatio Funderburke

It’s easy to see from the outpouring of concern that Wil Nieves is extremely well liked both in the clubhouse and among the members of the media who are around the team.

Since realistically there’s no chance he’s going to get a major league job even in a backup role, maybe he’d be interested in becoming the team’s bullpen catcher. He’d be able to stay around the team and the media who have such affection for him and would no longer continue to hurt the team on the field with his poor play.

AirRod is pretty swank! I love it when Tiffany and Amber say “fly-me” ;)

I think theo and cash have to deal yom kippur instead of ash wednesday.

As a pagan, I have to deal with Fat Tuesday!!!

    Peter,

Do you think that this club has “now earned it when it comes to Cashman now trying to make a big trade before the deadline ? IMO, the answer is yes. I would be interested in what you think. It appears that with Hughes coming back and the offense starting to hit its stride, that adding someone like Mark T. from Texas, especially after Cashman said earlier that this Yankees team had not yet earned it, making that type of trade would be a nice added boost to what seems to be a much better “morale for the team. I also agree that sitting Duncan in the 2nd game was a good move. No need to make him play both ends of the DH, and there are some pretty good players kinda ahead of him seniority wise, right ?

  14. E-ROC

This was a nice upgrade. Nieves was coming into his own after the all star break though. Ok, let me stop. Hopefully, we’ll get Ty Wigginton or Wilson Betemit. It’s always nice sweep a doubleheader. The Viz got a win in both the doubleheaders and he’s 8-2. I guess Chris Britton and Jim Brower will getting their chance very soon. The Rockies have interest in Farnsdearth.

  15. TKinDC

I dunno Drac, but Cash did go to college in my home town at Catholic U.

I just said that because that is my background – I hope I didn’t cause any waves.

    Peace!!!

of course not, TK. rumor is I’m the class clown. And when you’re a yankee you love everyone. well, except schilling, of course.

  17. joe

dfa nieves to make room for either karstens or hughes?

  18. StandingO'Neil

    Pete,

If you get a chance, tell Wil Nieves thanks for some of us here. He may not have played up to the level that some of us wanted, but you can never say the guy didn’t try. I know its an obvious upgrade to bring in Molina, but a part of me is disappointed because its more fun to win with guys who you can really cheer for. (Hence why I’ll never knock the Sheffield trade, good riddance). Once again thanks Wil and good luck wherever you end up. I’ll be rooting for you

  19. Frankie D.

Aquiring Jose Molina is the first move. Next moves should be Wigginton or Betemit for Proctor or Farnsworth. This would DFA Cairo. Bullpen help can come from AAA (Britton/Brower) or a Farnsworth deal to Colorado for Brian Fuentes as rumored. The Yankees would have to pick up some of Farnsworth’s ‘08 salary of 5.5M in any deal.
