Is Jose Molina really any better than Nieves? I guess he has more major league experience. Is he a good game caller? Good defensively? I guess for a mediocre, 26 year old AA pitcher, we can afford it.

  2. RALPH July 21st, 2007 at 10:27 pm

Good move. He will keep the runners at bay.

  3. Adam July 21st, 2007 at 10:28 pm

Finally we have a real backup catcher. I absolutely hated Nieves as a player, but he seemed like a really nice guy from everything Michael Kay was saying during the game. Part of me feels bad for him…another part feels glad that we have a solid defensive backup to give Jorge time off.

  4. Matt July 21st, 2007 at 10:30 pm

Kennard in AA was 1-4 with a 2.73 in 31 relief apperances, it’s a shame to since Will “Johnny Bench” Nieves was having his best game, but hopefully he gets optioned back to AA and maybe gets called back up in Sept.

  5. Matthew Cohen July 21st, 2007 at 10:31 pm

Meanwhile we could have had Barrett for a bag of peanuts a month ago.

  6. Winfield killed my seagull July 21st, 2007 at 10:32 pm

finally a smart move by cashman, and it really doesn’t cost us too much, i hope……

  7. Jerkface July 21st, 2007 at 10:35 pm

Kennard has been in our system since 2000 when he was drafted, and he is in AA in 2007. It didnt cost us anything.

  8. Andrew July 21st, 2007 at 10:35 pm

Wil Nieves is not a major league catcher. Jose Molina gives the Yankees defense and at least some semblance of a bat. Nieves clearly wasn’t getting it done.

Barrett wouldn’t have made much sense for the Yankees. He is a starting catcher, and is a mess defensively.

This is a solid move for the Yankees. Even more solid would be the rumored Wigginton for Proctor.

  9. Greg C. July 21st, 2007 at 10:36 pm

This would be a good move if it were made two years ago. But since it happened today it’s basically pointless. Molina has allowed more past balls this year, they’ve thrown out about the same amount of runners, and they both can’t hit. Molina is declining defensively quicker than Moose is on the mound.

  10. Emobacca July 21st, 2007 at 10:37 pm

    no-brainer move

  11. JFud25 July 21st, 2007 at 10:38 pm

    It’s about time.

  12. Eric July 21st, 2007 at 10:38 pm

Great deal. Kennard had not shot of making it to the Bronx, and Molina is a better hitter than Nieves (not saying much), but more importantly, he is a good defensive catcher who has thrown out over 40% of attempted basestealers over the last 3 years.

  13. Escobar rock July 21st, 2007 at 10:38 pm

I am sure the Angles Escobar will feel bad, cos he pitches better when Molina catches.

  14. Eric July 21st, 2007 at 10:39 pm

whoops, typo, Kennard had no shot.

  15. Greg C. July 21st, 2007 at 10:39 pm

Sorry forgot about Nieves’ past balls tonight, but regardless this trade is pointless.

  16. jeb July 21st, 2007 at 10:46 pm

If cashman is trying to get 10% better at BUC, he just got about 100% better because Molina will. Bat .238 and nieves batted around 100 points less. This was a good move. Now let’s ship EDSP tomorrow for wiggington, DFA Cairo, send down DeSalvo, and call up Britton and joba. With wiggington, Molina, shelly and (coming soon) Giambi on the bench the yanks will be just fine. More flexibility is a good thing.

  17. Baseballs July 21st, 2007 at 10:48 pm

I feel bad for Wil, but it needed to be done. Any of the Molinas’ is an upgrade. My gut feeling is Proctor for Wiggington is next and that’s about it for non-waiver trades.

  18. Global Warming July 21st, 2007 at 10:49 pm

^ Yes DFA Cairo and have 4 1B/DH on the roster leaving no one to backup the infield.

    Real Smart.

  19. Joe from Long Island July 21st, 2007 at 10:49 pm

The trade sounds good – a catcher with good credentials for a so far career minor league pitcher. What’s the catch? I’m curious why the Angels would get rid of Molina. Surely it wasn’t because they were infatuated with Kennard? Do the Angels know something that we don’t?

By the way – Peter, please thank Nieves for all his efforts. Though he wasn’t successful, it didn’t mean he wasn’t trying hard, from all that I’ve heard.

  20. Ryan July 21st, 2007 at 10:51 pm

The Angels got rid of Molina because he’s the third best catcher on their team.

  21. Andrew July 21st, 2007 at 10:52 pm

Torre’s overuse of Proctor is definitely starting to catch up with him. I think getting Wigginton for him would be a steal at this point. And it would continue to upgrade the bench.

Wigginton and Molina for Proctor and Kennard.

I think you do that deal.

  22. Scooter July 21st, 2007 at 10:53 pm

    Jeb:
Chad Jennings is reporting that Britton is on the DL:
    http://emedia.thetimes-tribune.....fault.aspx

I saw Jose Veras is rehabbing in Tampa, and TJ Beam is back at Scranton. Sean Henn has also been solid at Scranton lately – he could replace DeSalvo on the Yankee roster tomorrow

  23. Green Tea Torre July 21st, 2007 at 10:53 pm

I like this move. Molina has a great arm. You can’t always blame stolen bases on catchers…sometimes pitchers ignore runners or are slow to the plate. Again, Molina has a great arm. I think his bat will give us more pop than Nieves. I’m glad Nieves got a few hits tonight. He went down in a blaze of glory!

  24. martin July 21st, 2007 at 10:53 pm

baseball was my first love, and it will be my last.
baseball of the future and baseball of the past.

  25. LathamJoe July 21st, 2007 at 11:00 pm

Wil Nieves – nice guy, poor MLB catcher. Molina for Kennard is a good move.
Cairo is going nowhere right now, he’s a good veteran role player that’s needed on this Team of “stars”.
I hoped for a “Wiggington for Farnsworth” trade when Yanks were in Tampa but substituting Proctor is okay (however, not the best scenario).
It’ll be interesting if and when Giambi returns (and the do acquire Wiggington). Hopefully, Giambino doesn’t return until September or it will come down to Andy vs. Miguel

  26. Huuz July 21st, 2007 at 11:03 pm

this is a silly consideration, but i’m glad we took a player away from the angels. i’m sure it is only a matter of perception, but molina (to me) always seemed to be a pest to the Yanks.

    same thing with figgins.
neither are good players, they just bring their A-game against the Yanks.

  27. Go NYR July 21st, 2007 at 11:08 pm

Molina is a great catcher with a cannon for an arm

  28. Jeff NJ July 21st, 2007 at 11:08 pm

DeSalvo sent back down already, not sure who got the call.

  29. Bill July 21st, 2007 at 11:09 pm

    LathamJoe-

What are you talking about? Giambi will be back in 2-3 weeks, if not sooner.

  30. Stef July 21st, 2007 at 11:10 pm

Suzyn just reported that they called up Sean Henn to replace DeSalvo

  31. Brandon July 21st, 2007 at 11:10 pm

    YIPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEe !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  32. Bryan July 21st, 2007 at 11:12 pm

Yea cuz Sean Henn is real good

  33. Rizz Kid July 21st, 2007 at 11:15 pm

Finally a backup catcher why not Britton intead of Henn?

  34. Joe from Long Island July 21st, 2007 at 11:20 pm

The advantage of having your AAA affiliate in Scranton is that Henn could conceivably be at the Stadium in time to pitch tomorrow – assuming his recent use at Scranton permits that. If he can go, that would really help our ‘pen, given the recent workload.

  35. CB July 21st, 2007 at 11:23 pm

I think Jeff Kennard has been in Trenton for 5 years in a row!! He’s repeated AA 5 years in a row. And he’s not even the closer there – Scott Paterson who was picked up from the independent league is the closer.

He’s a decent arm but he was never going to pitch for the yankees at the major league level. Far too many arms way in front of him.

He’s the kind of guy they can deal.

Nieves didn’t hurt them more than he has because he hardly played. But its a cycle – he hardly played because he wasn’t good. Nieves being unable to play was killing posada who couldn’t even get a whole day off without pinkch hitting.

This is a terrific move. Even if molina hits .230 that’s ok for a backup catcher to play 1-2/ week. It’s around 100 points better than Nieves.

Very strong move by Cashman. Deserves credit on that one. He made a big mistake not getting a back up catcher in the off season. He addressed that mistake today.

  36. hmmm July 21st, 2007 at 11:23 pm

    solid pickup.

if britton is hurt, i think you have to shelve any deals involving proctor.

  37. The artist formerly known as Ben from boston July 21st, 2007 at 11:23 pm

YES YES YES i feel bad for nieves but we got us a molina!

  38. leeto July 21st, 2007 at 11:26 pm

Kennard’s not bad. he has a good arm and throws hard with some sink. seen him pitch a few times. he has a chance to be ok. molina isnt that great. hes gotten old quick but he is better than nieves (not saying much there).

  39. CB July 21st, 2007 at 11:27 pm

    hmmm,

it depends on brittons injury. we have to wait and see.

something needs to be done with the pen – something radical.

i hope henn can throw strikes this time. great lefty arm – mid 90′s fastball but like every other yankee relief pitcher – poor command.

backup catcher was a huge hole because of what it was doing to posada.

now they’ve got to get a coplement to viz

  40. roger July 21st, 2007 at 11:32 pm

Good move. We get a legit bu catcher and it also frees up a spot on the 40 (Kennard) that was going to waste. With the pitching talent the Yanks have at AA and below, I was expecting a move like this and wouldn’t be surprised (hope) if there were more (Farnsworth, Bean, DeSalvo, Myers, +) before the trade deadline. I want to see some of the younger guys, but of course Joe wouldn’t “feel comfortable” using them.

  41. In The Thicke Of It July 21st, 2007 at 11:49 pm

    Peter,

Do you think that this club has “now earned it” when it comes to Cashman now trying to make a big trade before the deadline ? IMO, the answer is yes. I would be interested in what you think. It appears that with Hughes coming back and the offense starting to hit its stride, that adding someone like Mark T. from Texas, especially after Cashman said earlier that this Yankees team had not yet earned it, making that type of trade would be a nice added boost to what seems to be a much better “moral” for the team. I also agree that sitting Duncan in the 2nd game was a good move. No need to make him play both ends of the DH, and there are some pretty good players kinda ahead of him seniority wise, right ?

  42. In The Thicke Of It July 21st, 2007 at 11:50 pm

    I am sorry, I meant “morale”, not moral….oops !

  43. Deryck July 22nd, 2007 at 3:23 am

“With wiggington, Molina, shelly and (coming soon) Giambi on the bench the yanks will be just fine. More flexibility is a good thing.”

What? So instead of having just a couple guys who can’t run, you’d rather have two first basemen, the slowest family in baseball molina and Shelly Duncan who has no real defensive position on the field. That sounds like a great upgrade

  44. Deryck July 22nd, 2007 at 3:25 am

“Finally a backup catcher why not Britton intead of Henn?”

Britton looked awful in Indianapolis. Walked the bases loaded with no outs and gave up a couple hits. And that was against the Indianapolis Indians. The same team who might get outhit by a few teams in Williamsport

  45. Gary T. July 22nd, 2007 at 10:16 am

Jeff Kennard was a mid-level prospect with no immediate plans for a Yankee future. He was on the 40-man roster which opens up a spot for Joba Chamberlain. Since spring training fans have called for a better backup catcher than Nieves. Molina was the best available without giving up top prospects for Jarrod Saltalamaccia.
