Game 98: Devil Rays at Yankees

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Jul 22, 2007 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

I just called down to the Stadium and no lineup has been posted yet. The players didn’t have to report until 11:30 a.m., so Joe Torre was probably waiting to see how everybody felt.

I’m catching a flight to Kansas City this afternoon, so this will be my last post for a bit.

Enjoy the game.

I wonder if the Yanks used up all their runs scoring 17 in the nightcap

    Pete,

Don’t media members get to travel on team charter flights.
Or there is some class system where only selected reporters can travel on the charter?

  5. In The Thicke Of It July 22nd, 2007 at 12:26 pm

    Cabrera CF
    Jeter SS
    Abreu RF
    A-Rod 3b
    Matsui LF
    Posasa C
    Cano 2b
    Phillips 1b
    Duncan DH

    Yahoo Sports just posted this…

  6. John July 22nd, 2007 at 12:30 pm

No Damon today I guess. Hope they keep up the winning ways

  7. Tseng July 22nd, 2007 at 12:42 pm

As far as I can gather, Pete has never traveled with the team, so if there is some sort of system in place, Pete isn’t one of the lucky ones. Then again, he’s only been covering the Yanks for (I think) 2 years now since before he was covering the Mets.

  8. E-ROC July 22nd, 2007 at 12:54 pm

Does anyone think Giambi’s return could actually hurt the lineup??

  9. SJ44 July 22nd, 2007 at 12:55 pm

Most teams today don’t allow media to travel on team charters.

Some teams don’t even allow their announcers to travel on team charters. The players have complained over the years that the presence of media on the team charters made them “uncomfortable” so, many teams eliminated beat writers and other media on their charters.

“He’s not outlasting Jeter as a Yankee. Maybe outlasting Jeter as a shortstop… we all know Jeter isn’t going to finish his career as a shortstop. But Jeter will never play for another team. Management would never allow it to happen.”

    Jim Johnson,

I just visited your site at MVN for the first time. I thought it was great I will be a frequent visitor in the future.

    Regarding the comment above.

If A-Rod does not renew with Yankees at the end of the season it is not even relevant.

However, if does re-up with Yankees , it is very well possible that A-Rod outlasts Jeter as a Yankee. A-Rod has the leverage and can negotiate a longer contract. If he gets, let us say, 5 year extension which is reasonable, then he will be a yankee at least for another 8 years. When Jeter’s contract is up in three years, he will not have much leverage. He will be already 35 or 36 years (he is older to A-Rod by one year) and I just do not see yankess giving him a five year extension. See the examples of Bernie, Mo and Posada. Also, as they age, A-Rod will be more valuable to teams because of his power.

It is just my opinion, and we will know only in three years.

  12. jason July 22nd, 2007 at 1:02 pm

Giambi will only hurt the team if it means Damon going back to the outfield which probably won’t happen. So it becomes a question of Damon v. Giambi at DH and the way Damon is hitting, I’d rather have Giambi. Also, in those games that Damon Dh’s, Giambi can pinch-hit for Phillips. So I think it’s a plus to get Giambi back.

  13. BBFan July 22nd, 2007 at 1:04 pm

Thanks SJ44. for the clarification on the charter flights.

  14. Behind Boston Lines July 22nd, 2007 at 1:08 pm

    SJ44-

_The players have complained over the years that the presence of media on the team charters made them “uncomfortable _

Isn’t this known as the “Wade Boggs rule”

That is, Wade’s mistress used to travel on the team plane on road trips. I’m sure wasn’t the first, and certainly not the last.

Besides, would you want to sit next to michael kay on a plane.

  15. Behind Boston Lines July 22nd, 2007 at 1:10 pm

    jason-

Any guess on how much weight Giambi put on while he was wearing that protective boot. In fact, I bet he ate the boot with some fries.

  16. BBFan July 22nd, 2007 at 1:12 pm

It is a plus to get Giambi back.
But will Joe bench Damon or Giambi and let Melky play in CF. Knowing how Joe approaches and his loyalty to the veterans I doubt he will do that.

Today Damon is not playing and Duncan is the DH. But, if you heard to his interview on YES by Kim, Joe said that Damon is not playinmg only because he needed a blow. The way he said it, Damon will be the DH from tomorrow and Duncan will get an occasional start. Once can only imagine what Joe will do when Giambi is back and it is even more crowded.

  17. Kev July 22nd, 2007 at 1:12 pm

It also can depend on the teams owner or management. Not to name any writers or teams. There have been times when a reporter have witnessed a fight or argument between members of the team or a player and it’s coach. My buddies wife is a flight attendant for a flight that flies a particular team. She’s witnessed several things and there has also been a couple affairs between a player and an attendant that sometimes the press member has reported to maybe someone and it got back to the spouse. After a teams loss emotions are more stressed while in flight. It’s sometimes get ugly. Some owners don’t want any information what happens on a flight to get back to protect the players on the team

  18. E-ROC July 22nd, 2007 at 1:13 pm

Pettite has a 1-2-3 inning already.

  19. Green Tea Torre July 22nd, 2007 at 1:16 pm

“Does anyone think Giambi’s return could actually hurt the lineup??”

Yes, but what is going to be an even bigger mess is when Doug M. comes back, too. The choices will be Damon if OF or Giambi at 1B or one of their bats sits. The other choice will be do we carry 3 1B-men? Phillips or Cairo will have to be released or sent down. Shelley Duncan will definitely be sent down. And Melky will probably sit more (which tends to cool his bat).

This type of stuff frustrates me immensely as a fan. This team was horrendous in the first half. If they make it to the playoffs (a big IF), I’m of the philosophy that you play the guys who got you there. Giambi and Doug M. did not, so if they win out and guys like Phillips, Cairo, and Melky, who have been important contributors do not, it’s a recipe for failure. Classic example is Shef playing 1B last year, and Aaron Small who came up HUGE in ’05 being immediately benched upon the return of the senior citizens from the DL…

  20. E-ROC July 22nd, 2007 at 1:16 pm

Cabrera has a walk to start the inning.

  21. Joe July 22nd, 2007 at 1:16 pm

    BBFan,
Imagining both Rodgriguez and Jeter continue with the Yankees for the next few years, which is absolute for Jeter and somewhat likely for Rodriguez any reason to put one at first base, to avoid wear and tear?

  22. gianthinker July 22nd, 2007 at 1:17 pm

At least we dont have to deal with Carl Crawford today. He’s out for the Rays.

  23. Anthony July 22nd, 2007 at 1:21 pm

Pete slacking with the lineup still not posted here! :-P

  24. E-ROC July 22nd, 2007 at 1:21 pm

If we get Ty Wigginton, that negates Doug M.(I can never spell his last name:)) glove. I doubt his bat will make noise due to that wrist injury. IMO, it’s all up to Damon. If yesterday’s doubleheader was any indication of Damon coming out of his slump, I would take Damon over Giambi because Damon can do more on the bases. But that will leave us with a hole in the outfield if one of the regulars get injured. :(

  25. T.J. July 22nd, 2007 at 1:22 pm

Pete since Moose prefers Nieves as his catcher, when he pitches will he trust the new catcher someone he’s not familiar or will he use Posada from now on?

  26. E-ROC July 22nd, 2007 at 1:25 pm

Looks like it’s going to be tough to score on James Shields today.

  27. Yanksmitch July 22nd, 2007 at 1:26 pm

Ouch… that was a shot. Pettitte dealt a big hanger.

  28. myrtlebeachfan July 22nd, 2007 at 1:27 pm

Damon needs to be there as often as possible. Whether it’s center, left, DH. Our team is stronger with him there.

  29. BBFan July 22nd, 2007 at 1:28 pm

“Imagining both Rodgriguez and Jeter continue with the Yankees for the next few years, which is absolute for Jeter and somewhat likely for Rodriguez any reason to put one at first base, to avoid wear and tear?”

It is possible, but it depends on what they do with 1B in the next year or so. If they bring in Texiera, then I do not see that as an option.

Instead I see Jeter or A-Rod moving to outfield as Robin Yount did in later part of his career.

  30. Yanksmitch July 22nd, 2007 at 1:32 pm

If Giambi returns swinging the bat well, I don’t think we’ll miss Damon much. IMO, Damon’s a liability at the top of the order, and I would prefer Melky’s defense in center. The only clear advantage of using Damon in the DH is running the basepaths, but when Giambi’s swinging well he doesn’t need to worry about that :)

Good to see Andy recovering after a rough start to the inning. He needs to go deep today.

  31. Behind Boston Lines July 22nd, 2007 at 1:34 pm

give us some hints, what happens, fill us in, if just a little.

  32. myrtlebeachfan July 22nd, 2007 at 1:34 pm

    I see Jeter playing short when he’s 40 =)
    I can dream, can’t I?
It’s not like it’s impossible, though. He gets good enough jumps on the ball and I just can’t ever see Jeter in the outfield. It wouldn’t sit well with me. Move over AROD. You can play the outfield =)

  33. E-ROC July 22nd, 2007 at 1:35 pm

Should we find if Giambi has his swing if we’re hitting like we have been?

  34. Joe July 22nd, 2007 at 1:35 pm

On the topic of A-Rod Receving 30 million per year. Over the next two-three years the Yankees will have a rotation that could consist of Wang, Hughes, Chamberlin, possibly Pettite, and Ian Kennedy or some other promising prospect. That rotation could amount to a few million, if that. Why not pay rodriguez the 30 million?

  35. E-ROC July 22nd, 2007 at 1:36 pm

    Solo homer by Godzilla!!!

  36. Yanksmitch July 22nd, 2007 at 1:37 pm

That’s 9 homers in 17 games for Godzilla. Awesome.

  37. david-in-dc July 22nd, 2007 at 1:38 pm

wow, how do you say “en fuego” in japanese?

  38. BBFan July 22nd, 2007 at 1:39 pm

Speaking of wrist injuries, it sapped the power out of Matsui for a long time. Now he regained that strength and hitting HRs like a Godzilla!

By the same token, I beleive Menky will be of no value offensively this year when he returns. I won’t be surprized if they do not activate him until Sept 1, when the rosters expand.

  39. T.J. July 22nd, 2007 at 1:42 pm

Godzilla is starting off having a better second half than he did the first. The all-star break seems to be working in his favor.

  40. E-ROC July 22nd, 2007 at 1:42 pm

BBFan–Are u taking about the return of Giambi or Douggie??

  41. Yanksmitch July 22nd, 2007 at 1:44 pm

Hmmmm… I don’t think Giambi’s been wearing the boot on his wrist E-ROC.

  42. E-ROC July 22nd, 2007 at 1:46 pm

I missed read it. :) I mistake Menky for Melky.

  43. david-in-dc July 22nd, 2007 at 1:49 pm

I see that Lester is going to take Tavarez’s place in the rotation… That’s not good.

    Nice plate blocking there.

  51. In The Thicke Of It July 22nd, 2007 at 1:59 pm

A-Rod has really come into his own and is so *money* in the clutch for us now. The Yankees will be the smartest team in MLB when they lock him in for life. Jeter and A-Rod are a fantastic left side of the infield and the Boss won’t let either of them go anyhwere, IMO.

  52. Bill July 22nd, 2007 at 2:00 pm

A-Rod is a goner after this season. Let’s be serious now.

  53. T.J. July 22nd, 2007 at 2:00 pm

Looks like this is going to be another blow out game for the Yankees. I’m lovin this style of playing.

  54. BBB July 22nd, 2007 at 2:02 pm

If ARod has even the slightest desire to stay in NY, he will be extended, I think. The Boss isn’t gonna let him go without a fight to the death. Only way he leaves is if he has already decided he is SO adamant about moving on that nothing anyone says can change his mind.

  55. T.B. Devil Dogs July 22nd, 2007 at 2:03 pm

Awful job by the Yankees in the third inning. Men on 2B and 3B after A-Rod reaches 2B on an E4 with one out and Matsui up means you’re supposed to score another run or two for 4-1 or 5-1 Yanks. The Yanks could’ve put away the D-Rays today, now they’ve kept them in it. Nice that Matsui smacked a solo shot in the 2nd but it seems like he is plain awful driving in the man on 3B w/

  56. T.J. July 22nd, 2007 at 2:03 pm

I’d rather not think about what A-Rod does until the season is over. Right now I want to enjoy what he and others are doing trying to save our team. I’m more concerned with how long we can enjoy this ride until playoff come around.

  57. E-ROC July 22nd, 2007 at 2:05 pm

Young and Pena are being a pain in the arse.

  58. In The Thicke Of It July 22nd, 2007 at 2:05 pm

Is it me, or does Andy seem to have no idea how to pitch with a lead ??? IMO, every time we give him a little breathing room, the very next inning, he does his very best to give those runs right back….very frustrating….

  59. Pepper Brooks July 22nd, 2007 at 2:06 pm

Have to think back to what the doorknobs on baseball tonight – John Kruk – said that Vlad was his MVP. After watching A-Rod all year and especially since the All Star break, how can you even make that arguement?

A-Rod is clearly more valuable to the Yankees and their season than Vlad has been to the Angels.

Just irritates me that commentators only prop A-Rod about the HR title and not about being just that good.

  60. Bill July 22nd, 2007 at 2:06 pm

T.B. Devil Dogs- I agree. That was horrible by Matsui and Posada. Hopefully, it doesn’t come back to haunt them.

  61. Danny Baseball July 22nd, 2007 at 2:09 pm

See, gave the lead right back !…this is something that I so hate to be right about…It seems the formula is ( and I am joking ) is right after we take the lead, we need to take Andy out !

  66. mel July 22nd, 2007 at 2:19 pm

Tough top of the 4th. Nice triple by Robbie!

  67. SJ44 July 22nd, 2007 at 2:20 pm

Garbage pitching by another Yankee starter. Continuing to walk a .180 hitter and letting a #9 hitter beat you again.

How many times do they want to walk Navarro in this series? Amazing.

That’s now 76 RBI by #9 hitters against Yankee pitching this year. Wilson has 7 RBI against the Yankees in the last week. Pathetic.

The walks have killed this pitching staff all year and it killed them again today.

That’s why the only way this team is making the playoffs this year is if they score 8-10 runs a game from here on out. Their pitching just isn’t good enough to hold up over the course of a season.

They just have to keep mashing and hope they have a lead in the 9th for Mo.

That’s why this team needs to add offense at the deadline. They can’t find enough pitchers to make up for what’s lacking on the pitching staff this year.

  68. E-ROC July 22nd, 2007 at 2:20 pm

    Nice hit by Andy.

  69. Pepper Brooks July 22nd, 2007 at 2:21 pm

If Phillips keeps playing like this, I do not see how you can keep Doug M on the roster; although the expanded roster might keep him there.

I definately think his play has eliminated any need to get a 1st baseman at this point.

  70. T.J. July 22nd, 2007 at 2:21 pm

Andy seems to be having problems on the mound in the past games he’s pitched. Maybe some personal problems. I dunno but I feel for the guy. Lets hope our offense can bail him out today too.

  71. E-ROC July 22nd, 2007 at 2:22 pm

    Duncan draws a walk.

  72. T.J. July 22nd, 2007 at 2:22 pm

Phillips has been effective him his last games. He’s been the surprising missing link in some of these games.

  73. Pepper Brooks July 22nd, 2007 at 2:28 pm

This is the type of hitting that the Yankees have been missing, singles to score a run instead of swining for the fences. Gotta love it.

  74. E-ROC July 22nd, 2007 at 2:30 pm

    DJ and Abooboo clutch again.

  75. myrtlebeachfan July 22nd, 2007 at 2:30 pm

I appreciate Duncan’s aggressiveness, but that was a little late and he didnt have to go in that hard. He could have broken a leg, sprained an ankle. And I don’t mean his own. He’s gotta be mindful that some players will lose respect for him with those kind of moves. Rookie trying to prove himself. I’m sure Joe will have a little talk with him. Or maybe Donnie.

  76. Bill July 22nd, 2007 at 2:30 pm

    F’n Manny.

  77. SJ44 July 22nd, 2007 at 2:37 pm

This is what they need to do. They need to mash. Its the only way to offset bad pitching.

Just keep hitting and hope, that settles down enough guys on the pitching staff to have them able to get outs and get wins.

Its a shame it has to be this way but, until some of the younger flamethrowers are ready, this is going to have to be Yankee Baseball for the rest of this season.

  78. Bill July 22nd, 2007 at 2:39 pm

Ok, the White Sox need to come back here.

  79. E-ROC July 22nd, 2007 at 2:39 pm

Hey Pete, tell my people at McConnell AFB that I said, “Wassup!” 316-759-3251 should get you to the command post. Tell them Airman Reives sent ya, lol. Have u ever been around Wichita??

  81. T.J. July 22nd, 2007 at 2:40 pm

I guess Tampa will think again before coming to Yankee stadium and embarrass the Yankees again as they did in the first game. Yankees are hitting and scoring like their’s no tomorrow.

  82. BBFan July 22nd, 2007 at 2:41 pm

For Abrue lovers as well as the boo birds:

Abrue alredy has 54 RBI that is third on the team behind A-ROD and Matsui. That too with his streakiness and cold spells. Not bad.

  83. mel July 22nd, 2007 at 2:41 pm

9-3, Andy must be one happy camper. Jorge just spoiled the 4th 5-spot inning in the last two days.

Is it just me or did YES have the wrong count the entire time during Andy’s at bat?

  96. Jorge Molina July 22nd, 2007 at 2:47 pm

YES just showed newest Yankee Jose Molina in the dugout -he looks like an older Jorge lol!

BTW I hope Nieves either goes to AAA-Scranton or finds a job with another team i.e. stays employed cuz he’s a good guy and I don’t want to see Raul Chavez up here if heaven forbid Jorge or Jose get hurt. Chavez suc ks so bad he couldn’t even take the backup C job from Nieves.

If Nieves could hit .220-.230, he’d do just fine as a backup C as he has a good glove despite recent struggles. Watch him get picked up by some N.L. team & bat .270 which would be amazing considering what he did for the Yanks outside his pair of doubles yesterday.

  97. Pepper Brooks July 22nd, 2007 at 2:47 pm

E-Roc. Never feel sorry for these teams. Have to remember, if they have a chance to kick the Yankees when they are down, they will do so. With all the revenue sharing that the Yankees give to the league, there is no excuse to have underperforming teams like this. This is why the Yankees have remained so large, money goes back into the players and the team – albeit not always wisely – Giambi, Pavano, Johnson, Brown, Wright, et al.

Wow, someone called that homer. Nice one E-roc.

  105. mel July 22nd, 2007 at 2:50 pm

Shelley must be one strong kid. His two homers were golf swings. Ugliest swing ever. But it works.

  106. E-ROC July 22nd, 2007 at 2:50 pm

    Giambi WHO??!!

  107. Erick July 22nd, 2007 at 2:50 pm

    Duncan’s the man.

Don’t trade for a 1B, we have phillips, no need this year to mortage the future.

    Get some pen help.

  108. T.J. July 22nd, 2007 at 2:51 pm

I think Tampa has given up.

  109. gayle July 22nd, 2007 at 2:51 pm

For those of us me included who told them to save some runs for Andy guess they didnt need to save them they are just pounding

  110. myrtlebeachfan July 22nd, 2007 at 2:53 pm

Duncan is impressive with how he can take a very low breaking ball out of the park. Both homeruns he’s hit didnt appear to be strikes.

His weakness is his sloppiness at the plate. He’s too anxious to hit another homer. He showed some patience getting a walk earlier, but he didn’t look very good in the at bat until he hit the homerun. Let’s hope he keeps it up, because in a close game, home runs like that will make the difference.

  111. mel July 22nd, 2007 at 2:53 pm

Jeter’s a great guy. He mercifully lets the D-rays off the hook. Classy. That was rather painful to watch. We should be seeing some wholesale defensive changes. Go White Sox!

  112. Tseng July 22nd, 2007 at 2:53 pm

Save some runs for the next series!

Will Pettite give up this lead??

  114. T.J. July 22nd, 2007 at 2:53 pm

I believe Tampa just wants to get this game over with and get the hell out of New York. We killed them twice yesterday and the wounds are deeper today to finish them off.

  115. BBB July 22nd, 2007 at 2:54 pm

Well, Andy was watching the offensive explosion yesterday hoping the Yankees would save some of those runs for him…and they did!!! Man, did they ever!

How long has it even been since we’ve had a 10-run inning…WOW!

  116. Pepper Brooks July 22nd, 2007 at 2:55 pm

Yes but Andy needs to throw some strikes and stop tinkering around.

  117. SJ44 July 22nd, 2007 at 2:55 pm

Its fun to see the energy Shelley brings to the table.

They have him properly. Its clear he can be pitched to.

But, used the right way, against the right teams/pitchers, he can help them off the bench.

It should also give the Yankees more confidence about using their farm system to fill some needs.

They can’t fill all of them from within but, more than some folks may think.

Now, Andy needs to settle down and give them innings. They can’t keep using the bullpen for 5+ innings per night.

  118. E-ROC July 22nd, 2007 at 2:55 pm

Pettite promptly gives up a single…..

  119. T.J. July 22nd, 2007 at 2:56 pm

Jeter’s a great guy. He mercifully lets the D-rays off the hook. Classy.

LOL Mel! I hope Jeter doesn’t keep feeling that way when we start closing in on Red Sox. We don’t need anybody giving mercy to anyone. I know you were kidding. Your comment was classic and funny. If that’s how you meant it to be.

  120. E-ROC July 22nd, 2007 at 2:56 pm

    Walks the next batter…..

  121. Danny Baseball July 22nd, 2007 at 2:56 pm

C’mon now! It’s probably too far gone for a game to be made out of this, but Andy needs to get through 7.

  122. Joeysdadjoe July 22nd, 2007 at 2:58 pm

That WAS an ugly swing but you need to be STRONG to get that ball out.Id go for a Loretta type before a 1B.Im not even sure how much that guy would play?

  123. Dayyyum July 22nd, 2007 at 2:59 pm

Shelley Duncan goes boom! 6 RBI in 4 games (3 games batting) already. Jason Pipp Giambi haha. BTW could you imagine if a player gave a curtain call after a 3-run HR off Bob Gibson for a 13-3 lead? Bob would’ve probably thrown a pitch into the dugout lol. I’m shocked T.B. didn’t hit the next guy (no men on base, 2 outs, Pettitte won’t risk getting tossed and not qualifying for the free win, Torre won’t risk that either).

  124. E-ROC July 22nd, 2007 at 2:59 pm

Pettite is starting to throw first pitch strikes now, finally!!!

  125. E-ROC July 22nd, 2007 at 3:01 pm

    Pettite gets out of it

  126. mel July 22nd, 2007 at 3:04 pm

TJ, I wasn’t kidding in that I feel sorry for them after the last 3 games. And I don’t feel sorry for their hitters, they’re “good looking young hitters” as Al likes to say. I feel bad for that bullpen. Of course, I was cursing the D-rays on Friday.

Any other team, I would want it to keep going. Bat around twice! Keep turning the knife.

    Nice play by Andy!

  127. mel July 22nd, 2007 at 3:06 pm

Pull the starters. This is just stat-padding.

  128. Joey Meatball July 22nd, 2007 at 3:07 pm

The flight to K.C. should be a happy one but no time to get fat headed. A sense of urgency in every game from now on. We’ll accept all the help Cleveland will provide vs. Boston.

  129. mel July 22nd, 2007 at 3:09 pm

    Joey,

You’re right about the mindset. KC is playing good ball right now. KC is not an automatic walkover like they used to be.

  130. T.J. July 22nd, 2007 at 3:10 pm

I agree Mel. If this were the Red Sox they were beating on I wouldn’t feel so bad. You do have to feel for TB’s bullpen especially two days in a row you give up runs.

  131. E-ROC July 22nd, 2007 at 3:10 pm

Abooboo homered! I feel bad for Carl Crawford, who is the “face of the franchise.” He’s a great player that no one “really” knows about.

  132. Tseng July 22nd, 2007 at 3:12 pm

I’d like Cleveland to sweep Boston or vice versa. Either would greatly help us towards the playoffs and at this point I’m happy to lose the division but still get in.

  133. T.J. July 22nd, 2007 at 3:13 pm

Blue Jays all over Mariners top of the 9th 8-0

  134. Danny Baseball July 22nd, 2007 at 3:15 pm

Cano is going to be over .300 by the end of next weekend. I think it’s time Joe move him back up in the order.

  135. mel July 22nd, 2007 at 3:15 pm

I’d like Cleveland to take that series. That keeps their wild-card lead up, but their division is tougher so they’ll have a tougher schedule than Boston. Red Sox will be able to roll over the Orioles, Blue Jays, and D-rays.

  136. BBFan July 22nd, 2007 at 3:17 pm

We should not settle for less.
We should win the division. It is achievable. We still have six games with Red Sox and there are still 64 games left in the season.

I am not so much worried about Cleveland. They have to fight Detroit and Minnesota and they will beat up each other. So, I prefer Cleveland sweeps Boston.

  137. TKinDC July 22nd, 2007 at 3:23 pm

People complain about Matsui’s defense a lot lately, but that is one thing he continues to do well. He gets the ball back into the infield really well and he seems to have a pretty accurate arm when he needs it.

  138. Tseng July 22nd, 2007 at 3:25 pm

Obviously I hope that we take the division also. I think right now the Red Sox might be the most vulnerable and we still have a number of games left with them (2 series is it? or 3? Can’t remember) so best of luck to the Indians.

  139. BBFan July 22nd, 2007 at 3:25 pm

Along with his offense, Matsui’s defense improved lately. I agree with TKinDC’s comments. Obvioulsy, Melky is better if he were to play LF. Melky is better in all three OF positions.

  140. T.J. July 22nd, 2007 at 3:27 pm

KC leading Tigers Top of 8th 5-1

  141. Col July 22nd, 2007 at 3:28 pm

Sean Henn for 2 innings (he in NY yet?) w/ backup catcher. Damon in LF. Andy Phillips at 3rd, Shelly Duncan at 1st.

  142. Chuck July 22nd, 2007 at 3:30 pm

Looks like Shelley Duncan might be the next Shane Spencer… 3 HR in 12 ABs…

  143. mel July 22nd, 2007 at 3:30 pm

Someone’s going to have to teach Shelley the proper protocol of how to play in a blowout. lol.

  144. Porkpoker July 22nd, 2007 at 3:30 pm

I, for one, am not believing Mr. Duncan.

  145. TKinDC July 22nd, 2007 at 3:31 pm

It will be interesting to see what BoSox do with their pitching. Rookie Gabbard has been really good, they just called up Lester after his cancer treatment and recovery, and big fat Schill is starting to rehab.

Hopefully that is the kind of problem we have the next couple of years, too many arms – not enough slots!

Wow – I hope no one wakes up Shelley D.!

  146. Erick July 22nd, 2007 at 3:31 pm

Duncan sure i staking advantage of the opportunity

  147. TKinDC July 22nd, 2007 at 3:33 pm

  149. Dustin in Pakistan July 22nd, 2007 at 3:33 pm

Just so everyone knows Shelly is from my home town and went to my rival high school in Tucson AZ. I was born in New York but man I’ll also claim the Universtiy of Arizona which I also share with the amazing Shelly Duncan!

  150. alexT July 22nd, 2007 at 3:33 pm

    Yeah Damon!

    Love the guy.

  151. myrtlebeachfan July 22nd, 2007 at 3:34 pm

This is enjoyable. I remember the days Tampa would beat us 20-2 like 3 times a year.

  152. BBFan July 22nd, 2007 at 3:34 pm

Speaking of Edwar’s demotion to minors, I hope he takes Melky as his role model.

Melky was also sent back after a couple of bad defensive plays and looked overmtched. He worked hard and came back and became an important member of the team.

Edwar should do the same. He should work on locating his fastball and being less wild. If he can do that he will get his chance and succeed at ML level. Probably he will get his chance next year, though he may be called up when the rosters expand in Sept.

  153. Kill Schill-(ing) July 22nd, 2007 at 3:34 pm

  158. Kill Schill-(ing) July 22nd, 2007 at 3:37 pm

    Go white sox!!!

What;s the deal with Shelley Duncan? Is this guy for real or have pitchers just not seen him yet? He does seem to strike out a fair amount. I wonder how he manager to accrue a .390+ OBA in AAA.

  159. TKinDC July 22nd, 2007 at 3:37 pm

I think this A-Rod kid might turn out ok. Is it too early to start talking about the AL Season Record of 61? (that would also be known as the pre-syringe era)

  160. E-ROC July 22nd, 2007 at 3:38 pm

Why Posada still working the counts, LMAO??!!

  161. Newyorkblowouts July 22nd, 2007 at 3:39 pm

My god.. it’s like playing a AAA team. This is insane. I feel horrible for Tampa. I’d be at the point where I’d give them outs. Or somehow let them forfeit the game. Jesus christ. Theyve got to be praying for rain.

  162. DC Yank July 22nd, 2007 at 3:39 pm

    Gomes is brutal out there.

  163. T.J. July 22nd, 2007 at 3:39 pm

Arod reaches 498. Two homers from being the youngest to reach 500. Rangers held a special ceremony last night before the game for Sosa reaching 600 homers. Wonder if Yankees will do anything special for Arod when he reaches 500?

  164. Jordan Meisner July 22nd, 2007 at 3:39 pm

Okay, this is ridiculous. This game needs to be called or something. No team deserves to be this thoroughly humiliated, and I’m really being honest. I feel bad for the Devil Rays right now. They’ve given up 35 runs in like 14 innings!

  165. BBFan July 22nd, 2007 at 3:40 pm

At the current pace, A-ROD will hit 56 HRs for the season.

  166. Alfred July 22nd, 2007 at 3:40 pm

It’s a good day to be a Yankee.

  167. sunny615 July 22nd, 2007 at 3:40 pm

how would a mercy rule work? I know no more stealing or anything small ball type, but do they just sit there a take strikeouts? Or does Torre just sub everyone he can?? Put Dunca, Myers and Farnsworth and Proctor at 1b, 2b, SS, and 3B?

  168. T.J. July 22nd, 2007 at 3:40 pm

In football teams get ridicule for running up the score on the losing team. How does that work for baseball I wonder?

  169. E-ROC July 22nd, 2007 at 3:40 pm

Posada is being mean. This beating is hilarious and we all know something this outrageous was going to happen with this lineup.

  170. TKinDC July 22nd, 2007 at 3:40 pm

    E-ROC – two words about Posada working counts . . .

    CONTRACT YEAR

I know he’s not going anywhere (God help us if he does) but he is going to get PAID.

  171. Alfred July 22nd, 2007 at 3:41 pm

Farnsy at short. I gotta see that. Airmailing it to first at 100 mph

  172. SJ44 July 22nd, 2007 at 3:41 pm

The scary thing is, Duncan almost had two other HR’s. He just missed one on Friday night. In his first AB in Game 1 yesterday, he hit one to the track.

Gotta ride the hot streak with him, especially against lefties. Its great to see.

One thing though. These next 8 games are VERY important. The last time we thought this team turned the corner, they had an 9 game roadtrip to Colorado, SF and Baltimore. They preceeded to go 1-7 (1 suspended game) and put them in the hole they are currently in right now.

They have to pound the Royals and Orioles. Its a must. A 6-2 or 7-1 roadtrip would be huge right now.

If they can do that, and have Hughes ready when they get back home, perhaps this team will have a stretch kick in them.

  173. Jordan Meisner July 22nd, 2007 at 3:41 pm

I mean, the problem is the Devil Rays bullpen is by far the worst in baseball, and we got into it in the fourth inning the day after a DOUBLEHEADER. This is seriously hard to watch, and I usually enjoy a good Bomber-style beatdown.

  174. Kevin July 22nd, 2007 at 3:41 pm

This is enjoyable. What was the thing Col. Ruppert used to say about a perfect day at the ballpark?

    I hope they score 30.

  175. mel July 22nd, 2007 at 3:41 pm

    Kill,

None of his homers were in the strike zone. All low. He just puts his bat under the ball and flings it out of the park.

  176. sunny615 July 22nd, 2007 at 3:44 pm

Even as a Yankee fan, it’s almost as painful as it is enjoyable. Almost. Time to… I dunno… start batting with their shows or something.

  177. mel July 22nd, 2007 at 3:44 pm

Can’t be too hard on Jonny Gomes. Left field in Yankee stadium is notoriously difficult to play. Which is why we can’t complain when Matsui makes the occasional misplay.

  178. S.o.S.27 July 22nd, 2007 at 3:45 pm

I think Tampa will be happy to take Proctor now.

  179. sunny615 July 22nd, 2007 at 3:45 pm

    shows = shoes

  180. Trent G. July 22nd, 2007 at 3:46 pm

Shelley Duncan = Kevin Maas & Shane Spencer re-visited. The Yankees will be worn out fron running the bases. Mouseena must be wondering where were these runs in his last outing. He would have found a way to give them back.

  181. Col July 22nd, 2007 at 3:47 pm

Phillips needs to walk so Melky can get 1 rbi.

  182. TKinDC July 22nd, 2007 at 3:48 pm

    SJ –

Absolutely right about the need to keep the hammer down. These 4 game series are hard to keep winning, especially after the Yanks lost game one of this series.

KC has been playing very well but the O’s are cooked and could well be sellers in a big way at the deadline. They have a new GM, or CEO, or whatever Angelos calls him, and they are sick of Tejada leading a pack of underachievers.

  183. T.J. July 22nd, 2007 at 3:48 pm

6th inning the score could easily go past 23 before the game’s over. If it reaches 20 and TB can’t score they need to just call the game. There’s no way they could come back.

  184. T.J. July 22nd, 2007 at 3:50 pm

This is one time I wish Pete was giving us updates what’s going on. The players, updates and his take on this game.

  185. DC Yank July 22nd, 2007 at 3:51 pm

Can’t be too hard on Gomes? Have you watched any of the games this weekend? Balls dropping in front of him that should be caught. That’s not the Stadium. Ball off his glove. That’s not the stadium. Gong to his left he’s awful. Going to his right he’s awful. Going back on the ball he’s awful. Going in on the ball he’s awful. He’s a DH.

  186. S.o.S.27 July 22nd, 2007 at 3:52 pm

Keep Giambi out for the year and Duncan as a dh with
Damon. I just hate to mess with something thats obviously
    working. Thoughts?

  187. iiicollies July 22nd, 2007 at 3:57 pm

Gameday doesn’t say who is the DH now. Or will Henn be hitting for himself ?

  188. E-ROC July 22nd, 2007 at 3:58 pm

I’m not a Giambi fan anyway. Duncan adds youthful energy to this old team and we need that in a big way. Duncan, Andy, Cano, Melky…having youth mixed with some veterans helps immensely. If we get Ty Wigginton or Betemit or Basak, that would be better.

  189. Adam July 22nd, 2007 at 4:02 pm

Great Defense today. The Yankees limit Tampa to a feild goal so far.

  190. T.J. July 22nd, 2007 at 4:04 pm

Adam a field goal and looks like they’re on their own 30 yard line

  191. T.J. July 22nd, 2007 at 4:05 pm

Yankees held them and they lost 10 yards

  192. T.J. July 22nd, 2007 at 4:08 pm

Yankees should bring out their second string end of the third quarter. Eli Manning would appreciate this lead. LOL!

  193. S.o.S.27 July 22nd, 2007 at 4:10 pm

Why is A rod and Posada still playing?

  194. BBFan July 22nd, 2007 at 4:13 pm

There is no one to substitute for A-Rod.
For Posada, not sure why Joe is not using Molina.

  195. DC Yank July 22nd, 2007 at 4:14 pm

Arod is done. He went into the clubhouse right after #498.

  196. joe July 22nd, 2007 at 4:15 pm

Is 15 runs a big enough lead to put farnsworthless in?

  197. T.J. July 22nd, 2007 at 4:15 pm

    Meanwhile
    KC finishes off Tigers 5-2
    Blue Jays win 8-0
Red Lady stockings leading sox 8-1 top of the 7th

  198. BBFan July 22nd, 2007 at 4:16 pm

Then they will lose the DH, put Duncan at first and move Phillips to third.

  199. BBFan July 22nd, 2007 at 4:17 pm

Fransworth does not pitch on consecutive days. So, there won’t be Frans sighting today.

  200. DC Yank July 22nd, 2007 at 4:18 pm

BBFan they did that two inninga ago.

  201. BBFan July 22nd, 2007 at 4:22 pm

    Thanks DC Yank.

We really need another position player.
So, trade for Wigginton is not a bad idea.
Then again, when Giambi is ready it becomes overcrowded again.

  202. E-ROC July 22nd, 2007 at 4:23 pm

How does Duncan look at first? He is suppose to be below average at first base.

  203. T.J. July 22nd, 2007 at 4:24 pm

Is there no one to sub for Godzilla? Both he and Damon could use a break. Guess not.

  204. S.o.S.27 July 22nd, 2007 at 4:25 pm

    T.J.

You can add Twins losing to Angels

  205. T.J. July 22nd, 2007 at 4:27 pm

This weekend has given me faith because there’s been good hitting and scoring. The offense looks healthy and ready for this second half. Both Damon and Godzilla have been pretty good in the outfield. These guys seem to know what they need to do in bailing out the pitchers when their timing is off.

Who starts the pitching for Yankees for the Royals game?

  206. mel July 22nd, 2007 at 4:30 pm

    Implosion alert in Boston.

  207. T.J. July 22nd, 2007 at 4:30 pm

Man I wasn’t paying attention I thought that was a late game.

  208. Erick July 22nd, 2007 at 4:30 pm

Can an AL team wave it’s right to a DH?

I had never seen that before, I didn’t know it was an option, I thought it was mandatory to have a batter instead of the pitcher, not an option

  209. S.o.S.27 July 22nd, 2007 at 4:32 pm

    Boston making it interesting.

  210. T.J. July 22nd, 2007 at 4:32 pm

Mel within 3 runs to tie the game. Lets go W Sox

  211. S.o.S.27 July 22nd, 2007 at 4:34 pm

Why not use Farns in left field Proctor center, give
Melky and Godzilla some needed rest after running
    the bases today.

  212. #9 July 22nd, 2007 at 4:35 pm

I just tuned into game & see Yanks winning 20-3…

So who missed the xtra point?!

  213. S.o.S.27 July 22nd, 2007 at 4:36 pm

Oh I forgot Torre as catcher.

  214. joe July 22nd, 2007 at 4:41 pm

if you move the dh to the field like the yankees did moving duncan to DH you lose the dh and the pitcher has to hit. no double switching the dh

  215. BBFan July 22nd, 2007 at 4:44 pm

    Duncan showed something there.
He does seem to have plate discipline.
If he can maintain that he will be successful in the Majors. He will strikeout a lot with his long swing but he will have good OBP and will pop some out of the park.

  216. susan mullen July 22nd, 2007 at 4:45 pm

A poster says, ‘We all know Jeter isn’t going to finish his career as a SS.” Who is ‘we?’ Whoever ‘we’ might be, how exactly do they ‘know?’ Do ‘they’ have a contract to buy the team with this contingency? Are they clairvoyant? Has Jeter made a secret deal under the table and passed the info to select baseball geniuses? Are ‘they’ 100% right about all their big ideas? Do they think Jeter’s name attracts traffic and attention to them?

I wanna see Cairo pitch today! Ever since the 2nd consecutive extra innings game in Oakland at the beginning of the season where they mentioned he *could* pitch, I’ve been curious.

  219. Erick July 22nd, 2007 at 4:49 pm

    joe,

    thanks, didn’t know that

  220. In The Thicke Of It July 22nd, 2007 at 4:49 pm

so we are winning 21-3, have taken another 3 out of 4 in the series,,,but I will be a million dollars out there that some of you posers, oops, I mean posters can find some negative in the victory, right ? IMO, we should enjoy the ride. The Yankees have been playing great lately and have the talent to make up the remaining ground in the division and take the crown. Playoffs ? IMO, yes. World Series Champs ? IMO, this would be the perfect sendoff to an awesome manager, who while he is not perfect, shows a lot of class and, in the end, knows how to win…

  221. Team ecords set??? July 22nd, 2007 at 4:50 pm

Have the Yankees set the following team records:

    1. Most runs in back-to-back games (17 runs last night + 21 today = 38 total)?

    2. Most runs in 3 games comprised of a doubleheader and a game before or after it (24 runs in the doubleheader yesterday + 21 today = 45 runs)?

    3. Most runs in two days (24 yesterday + 21 today = 45 runs the past two days)?

    Anyone???

Would they be in good position to set a team record for most runs in 3 straight games with 38 runs before tomorrow’s game?

  222. Bronx Born July 22nd, 2007 at 4:55 pm

Being a Yankee fan is a grand thing with a grand tradition to uphold. It is about winning but it is also about pride and class. The Yankee tradition extends to its fans and even the writers that surround the team. It is not about being in awe but a matter of respect. Respect for ourselves, the team and even the competition, because that is the Yankee way. Even when we disagree with decisions or moves, we should do it with class. And yes today is a good day to be a Yankee fan, and on those days we lose we need to remember games like today. It is great to be a Yankee fan.

The offensive display has definitely been impressive. It is the Devil Rays, but you still odn’t see this output often, even against the Devil Rays. They look like they’re ready to make a run. Not sure you can jump to the playoffs yet, but this has been a promising stretch. The next few series might tell a lot.

    There goes Robbie’s streak.

  225. Shamus July 22nd, 2007 at 4:58 pm

Wow, looks like we found a suitable 1B on the cheap. Go Shel…

  226. T.J. July 22nd, 2007 at 4:59 pm

I wonder if this weekend will be a Yankee breaking weekend with scoring Runs. There has to be something in history making that will go down in the Yankee history books. I have a feeling this weekend will be the talk of the MLB overshadowing Bond’s last two homers.

  227. BBFan July 22nd, 2007 at 5:00 pm

    Good win alll around.
3 out of 4 in the series maintianing .750 win record after the ASG.

The offense bailed bullpen out today. Only Sean and Mike, who are spare parts, used today and the full bullpen will be available for the KC series.

It’s only three games, but Duncan seems to belong in the majors.

On to KC and hope for another 3 out of 4. By the end of that series, we should make up a game or two on Boston.

  228. Stuart July 22nd, 2007 at 5:27 pm

The jury is out on Duncan for at least 150 AB’S..

They still need to add a position player for the bench and desperately need to help the pen.

If Karstens can be affective out of the pen that may help. If Hughes gets back then what do they do with Igawa??/As bad as he has been as a starter I am not sure about him and the pen!!!

They need to try more things to fix the pen..

Proctor for Wigginton I am alll for that move…

  229. Proctoriscrap July 22nd, 2007 at 5:29 pm

Damn 45 runs in three games and we make up ZERO games on the sux?
    :( (((

  230. Stuart July 22nd, 2007 at 5:46 pm

Guys do not put Duncan in Cooperstown yet…

Baseball is a game of adjustments remember that……..

    We need PEN help………………………..

Look at the Sux 3 end of game guys!!!!!That is the big difference in teams………..

  231. Stuart July 22nd, 2007 at 5:47 pm

we need to add 1 more position player now..

    13 pitchers is a joke!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  232. EdFl July 22nd, 2007 at 5:54 pm

Great week-end except for one thing. Did the Yankees have to announce the trade for Molina as Will Nieves was coming up to bat? He was having a good game and there on the board it was announced he was out of a job. That was unnecessary.

  233. malibuyankee July 22nd, 2007 at 6:08 pm

Jury still out on Duncan but he’s fun to watch. Proctor for Wiggy should be done in a heartbeat. We can bring up Britton and Joba is not too far behind.

  234. Doreen July 22nd, 2007 at 6:13 pm

So, we were out all day. Finally got the score on the radio. Can’t wait to watch the encore, but I assume it was a long game – will they show the DRays at all?

  235. Stuart July 22nd, 2007 at 6:17 pm

The problem when Giambi comes back is another DH and 1B type…

How about a real bench guy???

  236. DesignatedBlogger July 22nd, 2007 at 6:18 pm

    Hi Doreen,

The Yanks scored more runs for Pettitte today that they probably did in all his other starts combined. : D

  237. Mike S. July 22nd, 2007 at 6:22 pm

Hope Whoa is reading (yes, Karstens injury hurt the Yanks big time, and get a real name)

So far, rehab tonight for SWB, 4 IP, 1 r on 1 hit (solo hr), 1 walk and 4 ks.

yanks looking to insert him in the bullpen as long man.

with him taking that role, and Hughes hopefully soon taking Igawa’s, things looking up!

  238. Mike S. July 22nd, 2007 at 6:24 pm

Wigginton would help bench. Igawa? Minors. Sayonara. Unfortunately he is signed through 2011, but once Hughes is ready, it’s sayonara, Igawa.

  239. Mike S. July 22nd, 2007 at 6:26 pm

51-46. Take 3 of four from KC. Win the susp. game. Take 2 of reg. sched. 3 vs. O’s. That takes Yanks to the off day on the 30th (day before deadline) at 57-48. Then, we see…..

  240. Mike S. July 22nd, 2007 at 6:40 pm

so far…tonight. Looks like the long man will be with the Yanks soon.

    Karstens 5.0 2 1 1 1 6 1 1.80

  241. WebmistressEMC July 22nd, 2007 at 6:53 pm

    1. As far as the ridiculous score for this game is concerned, don’t forget, it counts for only one W in the standings.

    2. The Molina trade: Wil Nieves played in half as many games and had half as many ABs for the Yankees as Jose Molina had had for the Angels (61 vs 125).

If Rotoworld is right, and Jose Molina’s fate with the Yankees is to be a supposedly better-hitting, better-fielding Wil Nieves — catching once a week, maybe twice a week every month — his .242 BA is going to go downhill fast, and probably his defensive timing as well. He’s used to playing more, and has been a #1 catcher in the past.

Basically, the Yankees lost 3 years in age in this trade, not much improvement in the SB/CS rate (18/7 vs. 21/6), no improvement at all in the CERA, 4 Es in 40 games vs. 1 E in 25 games for a barely discernable difference in Fld% — .987 vs. .983. All “small sample size” stats, of course, of necessity. But there they are.

Some fans are saying “defensively, huge improvement”, but I don’t see it, frankly. Others are saying “Molina adds 60 points of BA and 52 points of OBP”, which is pretty funny, b/c he achieved that for his PREVIOUS team, it’s not like it benefits the Yankees unless he maintains it going forward– with probably half the playing time.

  242. Mike S. July 22nd, 2007 at 7:30 pm

Getting Molina was a NO-brainer, esp. someone with postseason experience. Esp. for a 26 year old AA pitcher.

    An absolute no-brainer.

  243. #9 July 22nd, 2007 at 7:46 pm

Red Sox have 15 more games to play against Tampa this season…

    Lucky bastards…

  244. In The Thicke Of It July 22nd, 2007 at 8:48 pm

    Proctoriscrap,

Good job focusing on the negative…you are an inspiration to us all….

You too #9 !…..I swear, there is absolutely no pleasing some people….Enjoy the victory, focus on the positive…there is much to focus on that is very good for the Yankees, both now and for the remaining season….

Enough with the Doom and Gloom already…are we Yankees fans or Red Sox fans ?? IMO, we will eventually take over the division lead with continued play like this and leave the Boston Red Sox with the title, once again, of regular season losers !

  245. saucy July 23rd, 2007 at 4:02 pm

nice. only game attended so far this year. showed up a little late from traffic, but was able to see the yanks come from behind after giving up the lead. nice game.
