Game 102: Yankees at Royals

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Jul 26, 2007 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Here are the lineups:

YANKEES
Cabrera CF
Jeter SS
Abreu RF
Rodriguez 3B
Matsui LF
Phillips 1B
Cano 2B
Duncan DH
Molina C
Igawa LHP (2-2, 6.67)

ROYALS
German 3B
DeJesus CF
Grudzielanek 2B
Butler DH
Sanders RF
Brown LF
Gordon 1B
Pena SS
LaRue C
De La Rosa LHP (7-10, 5.61)

Pregame chatter: Robinson Cano (7 games, 17 of 28), Hideki Matsui (6 games, 11 of 27) and Andy Phillips (6 games, 10 of 29) all have hitting streaks going. … Everybody is talking about the offense lately. But the pitching staff has a 3.00 ERA on the last six games. … The Yankees have won five straight road games, their best such streak of the season.

UPDATE, 7:43 p.m.: Here are the pitching matchups for the Baltimore series:

Friday: LHP Andy Pettitte (6-6, 4.12) vs. RHP Jeremy Guthrie (6-3, 2.88), 7:05

Saturday: RHP Roger Clemens (3-4, 3.72) vs. LHP Brian Burres (4-4, 4.33), 7:05

Sunday: RHP Chien-Ming Wang (11-5, 3.57) vs. RHP Daniel Cabrera (7-10, 5.04), 1:35

No word on what pitchers will “start” the completion of the suspended game.

UPDATE, 9:34 p.m.: Win or lose, tonight will be looked back as an important day in the season. The Yankees should now realize without a doubt that Kei Igawa doesn’t belong in the rotation. So he will get skipped with the day off coming Monday and Phil Hughes fits neatly in on Aug. 4 against Kansas City at the Stadium.

UPDATE, 9:51 p.m.: Wil Nieves cleared waivers and accepted an assignment to Scranton. He will report tomorrow.

Why isn’t Damon in the lineup?

  2. Anthony_CA July 26th, 2007 at 7:02 pm

    Because we’ve got Duncan!

  3. Mike July 26th, 2007 at 7:04 pm

Could be Iggy’s last licks as a starter. Should be interesting to see how he goes about screwing this one up. I’m thinking he has something especially bad up his sleeve for tonight, a special kind of baddness that he’s been saving for just this kind of situtation.

  4. Yankee VIP July 26th, 2007 at 7:05 pm

interesting damon isnt in there today.. you would want as much offense today with iggy going.. i guess damon isnt completely back yet (i think he went 0 for 4 yesterday)

  5. Sean July 26th, 2007 at 7:06 pm

LC: they probably want to give him a rest against a lefty… although Joe normally does that with Abreu.

You know, Peter, you mention the pitching in the last 6 games, and something has been bothering me lately about what the NY sports show hosts have been saying. They say that it would be too difficult for the Yankees to catch Boston because they have too much pitching. My answer to that is, Matsuzaka, Beckett, wakefield, Gabbard, and Lester (we still don’t know what you’ll get from Schlling who was not very good before being shut down)is not better than Clemens, Wang, Pettite, Hughes, and Mussina. In fact I would say that NY’s rotation is better. 3 of the 5 pitchers Boston has are unproven rookies. Yes, Beckett is having a great year, and is living up to his potential and I would say that Wang is certainly his equal with his dominating sinker. Looking at the rest of the starters, I’d rather have evry one of the Yankee starters over the Boston starters except Mussina. What do you think?

  6. whozat July 26th, 2007 at 7:06 pm

    LC

He’s played several days in a row and there’s a lefty starter?

  7. LCâ„¢ July 26th, 2007 at 7:07 pm

Wow I just saw the interview MiLB had with Joba, and he really isn’t as chubby as I thought he was.
And his name is pronounced “Jah-Bah”, not unlike “Java” LOL

  8. Joe from Long Island July 26th, 2007 at 7:12 pm

Another day, and Farnsy still on the team. I wonder if the couple of decent outings recently has increased his trade value.

  9. Mike July 26th, 2007 at 7:18 pm

Sean, there may not be that much of a difference between starters, but how about the bullbens?

  10. Jim Johnson July 26th, 2007 at 7:19 pm

    Starting Duncan AND Molina?

That’s taking away a lot of offense during a game when you expect to be in a slugfest. I would have Damon in there.

  11. KAJ July 26th, 2007 at 7:21 pm

Pete, good point about the pitching…I think the entire team is doing well…hitting, pitching, bullpen, coaching staff, beat writers (LOL)…Now all we need is for Cashman to pull a couple wabbits outts his hat, and then perfection could be obtained !!!

  12. Jim Johnson July 26th, 2007 at 7:22 pm

Batting Phillips ahead of Cano. That’s giving him some respect. Good for him.

  13. River Ave Report July 26th, 2007 at 7:22 pm

    Let’s make it 7 in a row

  14. Top Cat July 26th, 2007 at 7:23 pm

Rain delay in Boston-Cleveland game !!!

Boston has a nice 3 hour flight to tampa waiting for them after the game.

Hopefully, the game and rain delay lasts 6 hours.

  15. YankeeFan July 26th, 2007 at 7:25 pm

I like our starters when Hughes replaces Igawa. Also, can’t rule out Chamberlain getting a call to start later if needed.
I hope Igawa keeps it together tonight. 2 runs in 5 innings is what I’m expecting.
    Go Yanks!

  16. West Coast July 26th, 2007 at 7:26 pm

The Boston death dive. 6 or 5 1/2 by the end of the night!

  17. Top Cat July 26th, 2007 at 7:27 pm

On Damon: he’s not in the lineup cause he bats left handed and we’re facing a left handed pitcher. we need a righty, Duncan, for balance.

  18. Peter Abraham July 26th, 2007 at 7:28 pm

As Joe said the other day, he wants to give Damon some days off and he wants to keeep Duncan in the mix. His comment today was “We can’t expect nine players to play every inning, we need to keep people fresh.”

  19. Global Warming July 26th, 2007 at 7:34 pm

    “Starting Duncan AND Molina?

That’s taking away a lot of offense during a game when you expect to be in a slugfest. I would have Damon in there.”

Yes because Damon has been stellar offensively this season.

Please, Duncan > Damon as the offensive DH on the team for now.

  20. Sean July 26th, 2007 at 7:34 pm

Mike: Frankly, all year they’ve had a better bullpen, but they’re consistent relievers have been Papelbon and Okajima. Snyder’s been ok, but do you look for him in a big spot. Delcarmen has been ok since coming up recently, but he’s had too little exposure to really know. So you can compare Papelbon to Rivera (not really, because Papelbon has never done it in a big spot, remember A-Rod’s homer off of him in the 9th inning in Boston? but let’s say they do compare)and Okajima to the Vizcaino we have known and loved for the last 2 months (a big enough size sample to be convinced of his turnaround). Yes the rest of the Yankee bullpen is slightly worse than Delcarmen, Timlen, Vasquez, and Snyder, but they are no more reliable than the Yankee relievers.

  21. jennifer July 26th, 2007 at 7:36 pm

This line up sucks!! Jose hitting 9th?!! WHY??

Just kidding, had to get a post in critizing it. lol

  22. Larry July 26th, 2007 at 7:37 pm

    And Damon probably isn’t 100%.

The pitching staff has been doing great of late, indeed.

All these pitching staff debates are moot, everyone knows the Yankees are better than the Sox…in fact, if I remember correctly, the Webster Dictionary definition for Red Sox is as follows:

“A professional (scoff) baseball franchise based in Boston, Massachusettes know for its consistent inferiority to the New York Yankees.”

  23. Mike NYY July 26th, 2007 at 7:38 pm

I would like to announce the beginning of the Shelley Duncan fanclub

  24. Larry July 26th, 2007 at 7:39 pm

I would like to announce that I wish his first name wasn’t Shelley. It is too close to:

    “Surely you’re not serious.”

“I am serious. And don’t call me Shirley.”

  25. jennifer July 26th, 2007 at 7:42 pm

Larry LOL, I love Leslie Nielse’s movies!! Airplane one of the all time classic movies.

  26. Global Warming July 26th, 2007 at 7:42 pm

“So you can compare Papelbon to Rivera (not really, because Papelbon has never done it in a big spot, remember A-Rod’s homer off of him in the 9th inning in Boston? but let’s say they do compare)and Okajima to the Vizcaino we have known and loved for the last 2 months (a big enough size sample to be convinced of his turnaround).”

Ok brother, so we can’t compare Papelbon to Mo because he hasn’t done it a big spot(Superb stats VS Yanks)

-but we CAN compare the VIZ to Okajima who has done it the whole season. Vizcaino on the other hand has been good for 2 months.

    Just making sure.

Red Sox bullpen at the moment blows ours out of the water in almost every category. Saves, Walks allowed, Strikeouts, ERA, Blown Saves, etc

It’s no contest at the moment. All we got is Mo and the VIZ. Hoping this is the real Vizcaino, we still need another arm in there.

  27. nettles July 26th, 2007 at 7:42 pm

Our starters have been the winning pitchers in the last four games – first time that’s happened all season. We’re scoring early and giving them a lead to work with. I’ve got my fingers crossed that we can light up de la Rosa early and give Iggy some breathing room. He’ll need it!

  28. Brian M July 26th, 2007 at 7:42 pm

Cabrera has been hitting well too and I’m sure Joe wants another look at Duncan before Giambi and Minky get back.Damon and Giambi are not being traded!! They wont agree to it. Also Cash knows they can still contribute a lot when healthy. Trading them now would be selling low. Moving Damon would also be a mistake considering Abreu has an uncertain future on the team and Hunter, Jones, Byrnes and Rowand would all cost more money than we should be looking to spend. Tabata is still 2 yrs away (assuming he stays on course).

In this run we are having guys are finally playing to their potential, but for the first time all yr Joe can also look to his bench for production. Melky has earned a spot, but look for it to be one of a 4 man rotation, not one of 3 outfielders next yr.

Duncan and Phillips have probably shown enough to have Cash settle for the every day players we have now. Any moves will be for a new set up guy cos we cant send Viz and Mo out every day. Anyone traded will be a mid or low level prospect. None of the 5 top starting pitching propects should worry about packing.

  29. Mike July 26th, 2007 at 7:46 pm

    Sean,

I guess you’ve got a point. Things were different earlier in the season before Viz caught fire, but at this point I guess it’s just Mo, Viz, and a bunch of losers Vs. Paps, Okajima and a bunch of slightly better losers.

  30. Brian M July 26th, 2007 at 7:46 pm

    ‘Jose hitting 9th why?’

Would you rather he hit clean up? He’s playing to hopefully nurse Igawa through 6 innings by calling a good game. If he can manage that, then anything short of 3 GIDPs and his at bats really dont matter.

  31. YanksFanLV July 26th, 2007 at 7:49 pm

Maybe their sitting Damon because they are going to trade him.

  32. Brian M July 26th, 2007 at 7:49 pm

And Sean you are right about the pitching. Though Boston won’t hit too many long losing streaks though because their pitching gives the a chance to win every night and Delcarmen, Okajima and Pap are probably the best 7, 8, 9th inning trio right now. That is why they are tough to catch.

Still, Gabbard has overachieved (tonight will be interesting cos he’s struggled on the road before), Wakefield isn’t looking nearly as solid as he was early on, Schilling is a question mark, Lester pitched well the other day but it is too early to say or sure. DiceK is pitching really well right now but is still prone to the occasional blow up.

It could come down to how the match ups end up in the head to head games. They really need Beckett to in each time out right now though and last night puts more pressure on the other guys to perform. Also we are putting up big numbers early in games right now. Seeing us get off to big starts must also pile on the pressure for them during games.

Overall the pitching probably just about balances out, but we are putting up way more runs right now. Beckett dominated last night and still got the L. 2 months ago they’d have scraped a win and we’d have been left scratching our heads and cursing them. Now we have momentum, and that is probably more important in this sport than any other. Adding Hughes and prob Joba can only add to our momentum.

  33. Al July 26th, 2007 at 7:51 pm

Any thoughts on Star Ledger report? Yanks shopping Damon… ATL interested

  34. Mike NYY July 26th, 2007 at 7:51 pm

I don’t see the connection between Abreu and Damon. Damon can’t play RF

  35. jennifer July 26th, 2007 at 7:51 pm

Brian clearly i’m joking, every game some critizes the lineup.

  36. Brian M July 26th, 2007 at 7:51 pm

Anyone who wants to bet that the Yanks are trading Damon, I’ll take their action. There is more chance of us trading to bring back Phelps (the Mets killer).

  37. Yankee VIP July 26th, 2007 at 7:52 pm

it really isnt a big deal playing duncan over damon, and torre has said that abreu sits against good lefties.

im not sure how comfortable i would be if we somehow move proctor and farnsy, and bring karsten and joba to take their place.. but given how bad those two have been.. its probably worth it.

  38. Brian M July 26th, 2007 at 7:52 pm

Sorry Jennifer was quickly scanning the posts there!! One to many coffees tonight!

  39. Mike NYY July 26th, 2007 at 7:53 pm

Any thoughts on Star Ledger report? Yanks shopping Damon… ATL interested

If we can get Rafael Soriano and a prospect or two then I say great deal

  40. River Ave Report July 26th, 2007 at 7:53 pm

    Yankee VIP:
so you are comfortable with proctor and farnsworth?

  41. Rattachewy July 26th, 2007 at 7:53 pm

    Gabbard perfect through 1.

  42. Mike NYY July 26th, 2007 at 7:54 pm

I doubt Damon will be trading though

  43. Mike NYY July 26th, 2007 at 7:55 pm

    Gabbard perfect through 1.

The Red Sox are a lock for the WS

  44. Mike July 26th, 2007 at 7:56 pm

“There is more chance of us trading to bring back Phelps”

    Now there’s a scary thought! :o

  45. Brian M July 26th, 2007 at 7:57 pm

YankeeVIP – I doubt we’ll move em both. If we can find someone who’ll take Kyle and at least half his salary hes a gonner for sure. If not Proctor might go. But not em both. Karstens could become the long guy in the pen but we really need 7th inning guys more now the rotation is throwing well. Henn will probably get bumped cos we still have Myers and Villone as the leftys. And we’ll need to find a spot somewhere for Igawa when Hughes comes back. Though he really doesn’t seem suited to the pen though. Can we send a $45m guy to AAA again?

  46. Brian M July 26th, 2007 at 7:59 pm

Atlanta is looking for pen help not to trade it away. They saw what happens when you get short handed last yr, they’re not sending Soriano anywhere. They’ll try to pry a lefty from Texas to go with Tex for Salty and a prospect.

  47. Brian M July 26th, 2007 at 8:01 pm

Did Sizemore really start the Boston game with a bunt pop up to Varitek? Urghh!

  48. rbizzler July 26th, 2007 at 8:03 pm

Hi quick question for you all: Anyone going to the game in Baltimore tomorrow night?

I was thinking about driving up from DC to catch the game vs. the O’s as there are still tix available. Does anyone know if a ticket for tomorrow night’s game gets you into the continuation game as well?

  49. Brian M July 26th, 2007 at 8:03 pm

Wow Youkilis hit .402 in May, .264 in June and is hitting .231 in July.

If he hits like that for another month we’ll catch em.

  50. jennifer July 26th, 2007 at 8:07 pm

I’m going! And I actually had an extra pair up until 2 weeks ago. :( sorry. Did you check their website? or stubhub, I know there are tickets on there.

  51. Yankee VIP July 26th, 2007 at 8:07 pm

igawa will go back to AAA no question about that. you cannot have a guy who walks so many guys in your pen.

River Ave – I have very little comfort with fansy and proctor, but at this point, its hard to start experimenting .. especially with a rookie and a guy just off the DL. Atleast proc and fransy have mlb experience. that being said, i still think you make the change .. given how bad the pen has been.

i would probably vote getting rid of farnsy over proctor if i had to choose

  52. Rattachewy July 26th, 2007 at 8:08 pm

    Gabbard perfect through 2.

  53. LCâ„¢ July 26th, 2007 at 8:13 pm

    Tiene leche?

  54. jennifer July 26th, 2007 at 8:19 pm

    BOOOOO Barry bonds treatment.

    This sucks!!

  55. Lori July 26th, 2007 at 8:19 pm

    Wimps – walking AROD!!

  56. jennifer July 26th, 2007 at 8:20 pm

    Make’em pay ‘sui!!

  57. Lori July 26th, 2007 at 8:20 pm

Only justice would be for Matsui to hit one out now . . .

  58. KAJ July 26th, 2007 at 8:20 pm

Gutless pitching by the Royals…Godzilla needs to make them pay with a 3 run dinger…

  59. rbizzler July 26th, 2007 at 8:20 pm

Thanks Jennifer, but I was wondering if a ticket for tomorrow night’s game gets you into the continuation as well.

  60. jennifer July 26th, 2007 at 8:22 pm

I would assume so. They want fans in the seats, and the “real” game starts 20 minutes after the suspended one.

I just looked on stubhub, most of the tickets are gone! I was shocked!

  61. jennifer July 26th, 2007 at 8:22 pm

Sui’!! Thats not how to make them pay?

  62. Lori July 26th, 2007 at 8:22 pm

Yeah, but I checked the Orioles tickets earlier and they seem to have had tickets available.

  63. Dave K July 26th, 2007 at 8:23 pm

    Igawa time..

    for hopefully the last time

  64. Lori July 26th, 2007 at 8:23 pm

Ok – Indians are on the board. 2-1 in the bottom of the 3rd .

  65. gayle July 26th, 2007 at 8:24 pm

Jennifer they were all bought by yankee fans

  66. rbizzler July 26th, 2007 at 8:24 pm

    Gabbard no longer perfect…

  67. KAJ July 26th, 2007 at 8:24 pm

How he is swinging on a 3-0 count is just plain silly !!!….Torre should bench him ( unless of course Torre gave him the green light…then Torre should bench himself ) wait…Torre sits on the bench all the time,,,he’s the manager…..nevermind….LOL ! That’s ALL OK…we will get to this bum sooner or later ( like the very next inning ! )

  68. TKinDC July 26th, 2007 at 8:27 pm

    Rattachewy -

    Igawa perfect through 1/3!

    Enoungh until the 8th okay?

    :)

  69. LCâ„¢ July 26th, 2007 at 8:28 pm

A HBP on a 3-2 count? By Igawa of all people?
    NO WAY 9__9

  70. Tseng July 26th, 2007 at 8:29 pm

KAJ, I’m pretty sure that hitters don’t swing on 3-0 unless they get a green light so it was probably Torre’s call. I don’t think it’s necessarily a bad call seeing as Matsui has been pretty good recently.

  71. S.o.S.27 July 26th, 2007 at 8:29 pm

You dont swing 3-0 when pitcher is struggling to find
    the strike zone.Bad move.

  72. Lori July 26th, 2007 at 8:29 pm

    AAAARGH!!!!!!

  73. Stuart July 26th, 2007 at 8:29 pm

rattacheway sorry Gabbard gave up a HR.. To bad for you huh???

You are one of the negative whiners… sorry about the HR..

  74. Mike NYY July 26th, 2007 at 8:29 pm

    JINXER :(

  75. S.o.S.27 July 26th, 2007 at 8:29 pm

Thats payback for the captain getting hit last night.

  76. Tseng July 26th, 2007 at 8:30 pm

Igawa still has a no hitter through 1/3

  77. jennifer July 26th, 2007 at 8:30 pm

Damit!! I knew Iggie had perfect stuff and someone had to go and jinx him!!

    :P

  78. Lori July 26th, 2007 at 8:31 pm

SOS27 – Unfortunately I don’t think that was his intention. I just think he doesn’t any control.

  79. jennifer July 26th, 2007 at 8:31 pm

One thing wrong except Iggie didn’t mean to hit him.!!

  80. TKinDC July 26th, 2007 at 8:31 pm

Yes Mike, I control the action on the field from my secret bunker far beneath the earth.

If that were true, then my HR call on A-Rod last night wouldn’t have happened. (look it up)

    :)

  81. KAJ July 26th, 2007 at 8:31 pm

Tseng, it’s a bad move when it doesn’t work…LOL…That is more than OK…we win tonight 9-4 Final Score….put THAT on the board now !!!

  82. KAJ July 26th, 2007 at 8:32 pm

    …are they squeezin’ the K-man ?

  83. LCâ„¢ July 26th, 2007 at 8:33 pm

Igawa is getting a little squeezed imo.

  84. Tseng July 26th, 2007 at 8:33 pm

  85. Lori July 26th, 2007 at 8:34 pm

And if Cano had gotten the ball out of his glove, we’d be into the 2nd inning already. This game is going to drive me crazy.

  88. KAJ July 26th, 2007 at 8:35 pm

20 pitches to get through the first…When K-Man starts…you just know that by the 6th inning, the bullpen will already be in the game….That’s OK….as I said….9-4 the Yankees win tonight….Big inning coming up for the bottom of the lineup….How about a dinger from Molina ?

  89. jennifer July 26th, 2007 at 8:38 pm

Sounds go to me KAJ!! Jose’s first hit as a Yankee a hr.

  90. Brian M July 26th, 2007 at 8:38 pm

Dont be dissin the KMan ;)

  91. Lori July 26th, 2007 at 8:38 pm

De la Rosa took even more than that. This will come down to a “battle of the bullpens” – oh my.

  92. Top Cat July 26th, 2007 at 8:40 pm

Go Kei, go!! pitch count is kinda high, but keep going.

  93. jennifer July 26th, 2007 at 8:40 pm

Well we made that inning nice and easy. We’ll have to wait to see Jose hit a dinger.

  94. Mike NYY July 26th, 2007 at 8:41 pm

Its okay Shelley. We’re still behind you

  95. KAJ July 26th, 2007 at 8:41 pm

…that was just ugly…that kid needs to slow down and calm down a bit…that pitch was just terrible……yikes ! OK,,,now back to the action….Everybody get their ulcer meds ready,,,it is back to the K-man !!! LOL !

  96. Rattachewy July 26th, 2007 at 8:43 pm

DeLaRosa is awesome. I bet he’ll surprise us all with a shutout tonight.

  97. LCâ„¢ July 26th, 2007 at 8:44 pm

Wait – a K for Kei? Did I see that right?

  99. KAJ July 26th, 2007 at 8:45 pm

  105. KAJ July 26th, 2007 at 8:47 pm

I’ll say this…as bad as the k-Man it..it does not help that he is getting squeezed as well….The bats are heating up for the Yankees though…all will be well….

  106. Mike NYY July 26th, 2007 at 8:47 pm

Watching Kei pitch reminds me of Leiter in 2005. Makes you wanna strangle a kitten.

    Are you Michael Vick?

  113. TKinDC July 26th, 2007 at 8:50 pm

What is the over-under for runs the yanks need tonight? 8?

  114. Winfield killed my seagull July 26th, 2007 at 8:50 pm

7 runs last night….mark it down. 1 run tonight.

  115. S.o.S.27 July 26th, 2007 at 8:51 pm

    POOR KITTEN.

  116. Tseng July 26th, 2007 at 8:52 pm

  120. Brian M July 26th, 2007 at 8:53 pm

Winfield – You said that after the 21 run game and we came back with another bucket load. Have faith. Matsui’s gonna hit a long ball tonight.

kei igawa, i hate you. have fun spending the rest of the year in scranton

  129. KAJ July 26th, 2007 at 8:57 pm

MAN…totally squeezed…All but one of those pitches could have easily been called a strike…this does NOT bode well….our 5th starter ( by default ) can’t get the ump to even give him ONE darn borderline strike call….this stinks !

  130. Jim Johnson July 26th, 2007 at 8:57 pm

    Keep running Igawa.

  131. David July 26th, 2007 at 8:57 pm

Instead of letting Igawa pitch, why not give everyone else in the bullpen one inning of work each?

  132. gayle July 26th, 2007 at 8:58 pm

Kei meet Phil HUghes your sure ticket out of here

  133. Mike NYY July 26th, 2007 at 8:58 pm

    Brilliant!!!!!

  137. KAJ July 26th, 2007 at 8:58 pm

OK, perfect scenario upcoming…Igawa gives up another run…. then loads the bases….Torre takes him out…we are only down 4-0, facing THEIR BUM…we score 9 runs, our bullpen holds them and we win 9-4 to sweep the series…WHO IS WITH ME ???

  138. Cumberberg July 26th, 2007 at 8:59 pm

pull him. before the game gets completely out of hand.

  139. LCâ„¢ July 26th, 2007 at 8:59 pm

THAT’S IT…..everyone say bye bye to Kiki the calico.

  140. TKinDC July 26th, 2007 at 8:59 pm

At least now they will pitch to A-Rod!

I hear there are some great Japanese restaurants in Scranton. Maybe we can all chip in a buy a gift certificate.

  141. Mike NYY July 26th, 2007 at 8:59 pm

I think Igawa should be a lot better next year with a year to adjust. Should he be in the rotation next year if both Clemens and Pettitte leave.

  142. Keith July 26th, 2007 at 9:00 pm

Its hard to say we have to win this game, but…we have to..this is the easy part of our schedule and Boston or Cleveland will lose tonight….we didn’t sweep Toronto when we should have and now this Igawa..he is so terrible, its hard to watch…this Yankees team doesn’t play that good from behind, the bats get tight in their hands, 4-0, maybe we can come back but DeLaRosa looks sharp tonight and sometimes these not so good pitchers give us fits…get Igawa out now and send him back to Japan!!

  143. KAJ July 26th, 2007 at 9:00 pm

    OK…my plan is working perfectly….just walk the next 2 guys K-Man….please !!!!!!!!!!

  144. Shelley Duncan Looks Like Sloth July 26th, 2007 at 9:00 pm

    Disgusting inning.

  146. SteveNYG July 26th, 2007 at 9:00 pm

  147. Mike NYY July 26th, 2007 at 9:01 pm

    WHO IS WITH ME ???

    I AM!!!!!!!

But Shelley Duncan will have a walk off HR off of Octavio

  148. KAJ July 26th, 2007 at 9:01 pm

Darnnit !…any chance he can sprain an ankle entering the dugout ??????

  149. mel July 26th, 2007 at 9:01 pm

Dang, that was ugly. They must’ve known that he pitches up in the zone when they bid for him, right? Ugh.

  150. SteveNYG July 26th, 2007 at 9:01 pm

    I meant wait.

  151. Ben July 26th, 2007 at 9:01 pm

  152. River Ave Report July 26th, 2007 at 9:02 pm

  153. politically incorrect July 26th, 2007 at 9:02 pm

And kudos to the Yanks for thinking this game was expendable (or house money for the idiot who said that earlier today). No games are expendable when you trail by 6 games this late in the season.

To just give the damn thing away makes no sense. Igawa +_ a depleted lineup? Give me a break…

  154. Jeff NJ July 26th, 2007 at 9:02 pm

This is the last time we will ever see Igawa start agame for the NY Yankees. He might be gone this week.

  155. Mike NYY July 26th, 2007 at 9:02 pm

    Hey give Igawa a break

He`s not the biggest waste of money that started off in the Yankees rotation

  156. sunny615 July 26th, 2007 at 9:03 pm

oh well, it was a long shot to win with Igawa on the mound any way. Who here really thought he’d give a quality outing?

I’d take farnsworthless for 6 innings over this guy… sheesh.

  157. LCâ„¢ July 26th, 2007 at 9:03 pm

    MOLINA

  158. Kat July 26th, 2007 at 9:03 pm

I think we will have at least one more igawa appearance before hughes gets here. Don’t know what his fate will be after that – bullpen or AAA.

At least molina is making a good first impression but man, he is a BIG boy, huh?

  159. politically incorrect July 26th, 2007 at 9:03 pm

And is there a worse pitcher in all of baseball when he gets ahead in the count 0-2 or 1-2?

  163. Albany Yankee July 26th, 2007 at 9:05 pm

Igawa must go. Just let Henn and Villone pitch his next start. They’re going to have to come in tonight anyway. It must be hard for Joe Torre to hide how much he hates sending this bum out every fifth day.

  164. sunny615 July 26th, 2007 at 9:05 pm

hopefully arod can get 500, 501 and 502 today too.

  165. politically incorrect July 26th, 2007 at 9:05 pm

“Don’t know what his fate will be after that – bullpen or AAA.”

Only Cashman and Clueless Joe would keep this guy on the team. Just eat the contract and ship him back to the Far East.

  166. Jim Johnson July 26th, 2007 at 9:05 pm

Unfortunately, I think Igawa is going to get 1 more start. Hughes has 1 more rehab start to go, Sunday I believe.

  167. Kat July 26th, 2007 at 9:06 pm

Sunny – that would be phenomenal!

  168. Keith July 26th, 2007 at 9:06 pm

    Anyone?

    Bueller?

  172. politically incorrect July 26th, 2007 at 9:07 pm

“Unfortunately, I think Igawa is going to get 1 more start.”

Then the Yanks aren’t serious about making a playoff run. This is complete bullsh** and Cashman is a bullsh** GM. And Torre is bullsh** for letting Igawa start.

  173. LCâ„¢ July 26th, 2007 at 9:07 pm

Igawa isn’t a bum. I mean the guy obviously works hard and I’m sure he isn’t TRYING to lose, he just isn’t good enough to pitch here.

  179. Vinny T. July 26th, 2007 at 9:10 pm

Kei Igawa makes the “Fat Toad” look like Cy Young himself. Mail this dud (not to be confused with dude) to Tampa and be quick about it.

  180. dontfirecash July 26th, 2007 at 9:10 pm

This is defineatley Igawa’s last start. He can be skipped for his next start because of the off day on Monday. THANK GOD.

  181. Albany Yankee July 26th, 2007 at 9:11 pm

If there is a team in the big leagues worse than the Yankees at having the leadoff runner on second and moving him to third with the next at bat, I hope I never have to watch them play.

Ok, enough complaining. This 17-5 run by the Pinstripes has been awesome.

  182. politically incorrect July 26th, 2007 at 9:11 pm

  186. jennifer July 26th, 2007 at 9:14 pm

Can you say one of the worst signings in mlb? Why the hell did Cash sign this piece of garbage. I think they should just make him pitch the entire game. I think it would take him 300 pitches.

  187. politically incorrect July 26th, 2007 at 9:15 pm

“Two leadoff doubles left on base”

  190. TKinDC July 26th, 2007 at 9:16 pm

Guys – This is Igawa’s last rodeo at the OK Corral.

They have 2 off days in the next couple of weeks (next Monday and the following Thursday) and Hughes is only slated for 1 more rehab start.

  205. Global Warming July 26th, 2007 at 9:22 pm

“Who wants to bet that Phil Hughes will take Kei’s next start?”

I wish but Hughes is scheduled for 1 more rehab start in AAA. We will probably have to deal with one more healthy dose of Kei Igawa.

That or DeSalvo. Same result though.

    Come on A-Rod!! Hum dinger-dinger!

  208. jennifer July 26th, 2007 at 9:24 pm

Or so they say Global. I’ll believe it when he takes the mound in Scranton.

  209. YankeeJosh July 26th, 2007 at 9:24 pm

Yankees are 12-3 since the break. Today is a rare house’s money game. Even with a loss tonight they still won the series and then would need to take 3 of 4 from Baltimore.

The team is only 4.5 out of the wild card and if Cleveland loses no ground is lost to them tonight. It makes sense to let Hughes get his pitch count up. I’d rather live with Igawa for a start more if needed than rush Hughes back before his pitch count is high enough and have him injure himnself again. There are still plenty of games left. Right now Igawa is a better option than Clippard, DeSalvo or Wright. Hughes will be here soon enough.

And this game is still not over yet. A comeback is always possible with the bats as hot as they’ve been.

  210. Ben July 26th, 2007 at 9:24 pm

I’m not sure they will “rush” Hughes to take Igawa’s next start, since they have already said publicly that he is making another start at SWB. However, I bet Igawa isn’t making his next start. Karstens is set up to take the ball Wednesday. Maybe Matty DeSalvo gets another chance.

  211. Jeff NJ July 26th, 2007 at 9:25 pm

People, it is basically a done deal, Igawa is out of the rotation. First need for a 5th starter is Sat the 4th, 4 days after Phil’s next start. Igawa is going down, hopefully to Trenton.

  212. LCâ„¢ July 26th, 2007 at 9:25 pm

    politically incorrect-
“If anyone is bothering to watch that Indians/Red Sox series, they’d see Boston is a very good team that won’t have a real bad slide, so NY is going to have to play each and every game with a playoff mindset.”

If you want to use that logic, we took at least 3 of 4 from a team that took 2 of 3 from them at Fenway, and 4 of 6 from Detroit and Cleveland. The Yankees aren’t going to go 62-0 the rest of the season, so please stop acting like it’s Armageddon because we might lose this game.

    Yay Matsui!

  217. Global Warming July 26th, 2007 at 9:27 pm

Aye, Matt DeSalvo might be worse than Kei Igawa…

Karstens would be a nice lift though.

DeSalvo got smacked around tonight. :(

  221. Brian M July 26th, 2007 at 9:30 pm

I have a nasty feeling tonight is the end for KMan and the beginning of the end for Duncan. Igawa is one of these guys that I always feel is about to turn it around but just never seems to. I doubt he’ll get too many opportunites here though with all the pitching we’re producing, but who is gonna take him off our hands after the year he has had?
I guess once you forget the posting fee, his contract isnt so bad if he could just show a little improvement. Maybe in a big park he’d do OK.

  222. Ben July 26th, 2007 at 9:30 pm

politically incorrect, have you been watching the Red Sox this year??

On May 29th, they reached 21 games over .500. And, at the start of play today, they were … 21 games over .500!! They have basically been playing .500 ball for almost two months now. They are 25-25 over their last 50 games. They are not unbeatable. They have been losing as many games as they have been winning for some time now, and their lead, though large this late in the season, is not insurmountable.

  223. Ben July 26th, 2007 at 9:31 pm

Btw, I think the Sox have a great team. They are definitely drifting right now, though.

    “I smell a comeback.”

    No, you just smell bad.

  225. Jordan July 26th, 2007 at 9:32 pm

We can’t win every game and taking 3 out of 4 from the Royals is acceptable.

However, Kei Igawa is unacceptable. I don’t care how many times he’s trying to work out in the OF or stretching on the stairs, he can’t pitch in the major leagues.

The posting fee is a sunk cost. Gone. His salary dictates he should be able to be traded at $4 mil a year (for who cares what). If not, he should be DFA’d. With the amount of young quality arms we have he is a waste of space in AAA or even in the GCL. And eating the remaining $20 million over 5 years is something the Yankees can afford considering how much of a disappointment Igawa is vs how much they spend.

He and Moose back to back has the ability to decimate the bullpen. Anyone is better than him. Joba (even though the nay-sayers will say the Yankees should be cautious with him), Karstens, anyone. Kei Igawa cannot be permitted to pitch for a team with playoff aspirations.

But on a positive note, let’s hear it for Andy Phillips. The “kid” (not that young) continues to do the little things. And Jose Molina having a big inning last inning. Certainly an upgrade from Nieves.

  226. YankeeJosh July 26th, 2007 at 9:32 pm

    That much?

It’s 4 games in the loss Column behind Cleveland. Major League Baseball teams lose games. One game does not a season make.

By no means am I writing off the game, but there is absolutely no need to panic tonight.

  227. Brian M July 26th, 2007 at 9:34 pm

Thanks for stopping by Shelley, be sure to give Giambi a high 5 on your way out.

  228. TKinDC July 26th, 2007 at 9:34 pm

I bet some of you guys acted this way after they lost to Tampa and Toronto. When are people going to realize that the Yankees are NOT going to win every single game?

  230. politically incorrect July 26th, 2007 at 9:35 pm

This team is very front-running. They can expand a lead and blow teams out. But they cannot show guts and come back to win games.

Arod got them a few, but they are not a “gutty” “gritty” team, imo. And this game is showing that.

  231. BBFan July 26th, 2007 at 9:36 pm

    Politically Incorrect,

You have an opinion, which is negative, that is fine.
Did any one call you an idiot for that?

You can not call others idiots if you do not like what they write. Just like many of us ignore your comments, ignore the comments from others if you do not like. If you want to comment that is fine too, but there is no need to call names.

  232. Jordan July 26th, 2007 at 9:36 pm

    Disgusting.

  233. politically incorrect July 26th, 2007 at 9:36 pm

Boston leading Cleveland 9-5 in the 6th inning.

  234. YankeeJosh July 26th, 2007 at 9:37 pm

    Jordan,

Nice take. I’d rather not sell low on Igawa. He’s not going to get anything, so let him pitch in Scranton and maybe in a year or two he learns something and shows he deserves another shot in the Bigs with some role.

But he shouldn’t be on the Major League roster once there are better options. However, Clippard, Desalvo etc haven’t proven to be better options. IMO Karstens and Hughes obviously are.

  235. Tim July 26th, 2007 at 9:37 pm

I’m with you on Igawa what a waste of a rotation spot on any ML team let alone the NY Yankees. He will go down as the biggest blemish besides Weaver on Cashman’s legacy as a GM.

  236. Brian M July 26th, 2007 at 9:38 pm

This game aint over. Phillips is getting his head down and doing his bit, Jeter is always capable, ARod has more 9th inning RBIs than, well probably the whole KC team. Cabrera will get a big hit in this one too.

The big question is whether we can hold them at 4 runs.

  237. S.o.S.27 July 26th, 2007 at 9:39 pm

I say send him to Seattle. They will take him. They need a
starter and they can make the money back by the Japanese
    fan base there.

If your reading this Cash,do it. Its o.k. we forgive you
only if we dont see him again.

  238. jennifer July 26th, 2007 at 9:40 pm

Have you ever seen a pitcher go 0-2 more on a guy than walk them?

  239. TKinDC July 26th, 2007 at 9:40 pm

De La Rosa is at 70 pitches and the KC bullpen must be running on fumes after the whooping we’ve delivered the past couple of nights.

BB- you are absolutely right but trolls have no class.

  240. Jeff NJ July 26th, 2007 at 9:41 pm

TKinDC, check the schedule again, they get Monday off, they need a 5th starter Saturday the 4th. Which happens to be Hughes’s regular start day. Igawa could be gone after this game.

  241. Cumberberg July 26th, 2007 at 9:42 pm

it ain’t pretty, but he’s holding them at 0-4.

  242. jennifer July 26th, 2007 at 9:42 pm

hmm Phil make his next start for the big club August 4th. Even though I am leaving for vacation the next day, I think i’ll buy tickets.

  243. politically incorrect July 26th, 2007 at 9:42 pm

    “This game aint over.”

lol. This game was over a long time ago…in fact, it was over when they announced Igawa as the starting pitcher.

There isn’t the necessary fight in this team for a comeback win tonight. I hope I’m wrong but I’ll bet any amount of money I’m not.

  244. Brian M July 26th, 2007 at 9:42 pm

If Cash can keep his job through till next season, a big winning streak is coming. Noone will even remember Igawa. His legacy will be 10 Championships as GM.

Question – How many big mistakes did Red Aurbach make?
A – Nobody knows, nobody cares – overall he won a lot.

  245. YankeeJosh July 26th, 2007 at 9:42 pm

If Igawa can get through 5 innings with just allowing 4 runs, it’s not a terrible start. Keeps us in the game. Certainly not good, nor worthy of remaining in the rotation but not a total disaster either.

  246. Joe from Long Island July 26th, 2007 at 9:43 pm

The only good thing in this is that I’ve got tickets to that August 4th game, against these same Royals. I’m already looking forward to seeing Phil (No-Hit) Hughes.

  247. jennifer July 26th, 2007 at 9:43 pm

You think they’d bring up Jeff to be the long man? When does he pitch next?

  248. TKinDC July 26th, 2007 at 9:43 pm

You are right Jeff NJ – I made the mistake of listening to Suzyn. I would bet a troll’s gonads that Hughes makes that start!

  252. Keith July 26th, 2007 at 9:45 pm

Igawa needs to stay in the minors for a full year, don’t trade him, its not worth it, you’ll get nothing for him now…maybe he does better in the minors and next summer, some team takes him in a trade, a 4 million dollar a year lefty pitcher could be worth it to them, or he is a spot starter for us due to injury or something…just don’t ever bring him back up for a long time, let him pitch in the minors, out of sight, etc…this Yankee team needs to play better and come back after being down, we should have at least 1 run with 2 leadoff doubles, that’s not a good sign….again I know we can’t win them all, but, with the amount we lost early on, we kind of need to win as much as we can now so when we start playing Clev, Detroit, Boston, CA, we can afford to lose a few and still be there in the end…

  253. Kat July 26th, 2007 at 9:46 pm

Joe from Long Island – I am Kat from Long Island and I also have tickets to that game. I seriously cannot wait!

  254. kasey July 26th, 2007 at 9:46 pm

“So he will get skipped with the day off coming Monday and Phil Hughes fits neatly in on Aug. 4 against Kansas City at the Stadium.”

you’d think. but cashman seems intent on defending his decision to sign igawa.

he’s awful. absolutely awful. and he has been all season. he’s making cashman and the scouts look absolutely clueless.

  256. Brian M July 26th, 2007 at 9:47 pm

Wonder if they’ll send Igawa str8 down to AAA. No point takin up a spot if he’s done. They must have half expected him to get shelled tonight and had a response ready. Doubt they’ll deal him before deadline but they might wait for it to pass first rather than further harm his value by demoting him again.

  257. Col July 26th, 2007 at 9:47 pm

  259. Joe July 26th, 2007 at 9:48 pm

So, like, back up catchers get hits and throw guys out from stealing bases? huh, who’d of thought

  260. Jordan July 26th, 2007 at 9:48 pm

    Thanks YankeeJosh.

Normally I’d agree with you on the fact that they should keep him in AAA, however in this case I cannot. And the only reason I can’t is because I just see him sitting at SWB for the rest of this season and most if not all of next season posting respectable numbers. Unfortunately, so have DeSalvo, T-Clip, White, etc.

Igawa came here as a #4 starter at absolute best. Everyone knew that and admitted it going in. Now that he’s been exposed for what he is, a pitcher with some decent movement but absolutely no command, he is useless. All ML teams out there know about him and know his ceiling is pretty low barring a miraculous development of a gyroball.

With the amount of great arms in the Yankee system he’ll just road block the way for capable arms ready to move up (i.e. Alan Horne still in AAA while Colter Bean takes up a spot). With no real chance of development and no sign of having a higher ceiling Igawa would just be a hassle. Sell now and get any kind of a 26 year old position low level prospect hoping he turns into a great role player.

  261. Brian M July 26th, 2007 at 9:49 pm

This team has no guts eh? Getting 2 guys on in 2 str8 innings. They are certainly giving themselves a shot at it.

  262. gayle July 26th, 2007 at 9:49 pm

august 4th would fit very nicely into my schedule of saturday games as well lol. I walked out of the last start with Igawa on a Saturday and would rather sell the tikcets than have to sit through another one of his starts in person it is bad enough watching them on tv

  263. Jeff NJ July 26th, 2007 at 9:51 pm

Not sure why it isn’t obvious to everyone, politically correct is the nightly troll. Just ignore him.

  264. jennifer July 26th, 2007 at 9:51 pm

Your aren’t kidding. I was at the game against Boston, when Jeff got hurt :( First I thought I was going to get sick cause Jeff was hurt. Than I thought I was going to get sick cause I saw Kei come out of the pen. That was his one and only good start.

  265. Jordan July 26th, 2007 at 9:51 pm

With regards to my last post, AA for Horne obviously.

  266. Jeff NJ July 26th, 2007 at 9:52 pm

Gayle, I agree, I have the Saturday package and ate my tickets last week with Igawa pitching. Turned out to be a good game, but I don’t regret it. My next game after that is the night Sheffield returns to the Bronx, Thursday the 16th.

  267. Brian M July 26th, 2007 at 9:53 pm

I dunno with Igawa man. I’d send him down give him a couple of months with Nardi to work on his control. Give him a shot in spring. He can possibly be a back up incase some of the young guys struggle, or he could impress in spring and we’d get better value on a deal. Selling now is absolute bottom dollar. He’d be better in Tampa than on the AAA team anyway. He needs his control and delivery looked at. Not just a chance to throw more innings.

  268. jennifer July 26th, 2007 at 9:53 pm

Will they walk Alex? 2 on 2 out?

  269. LCâ„¢ July 26th, 2007 at 9:54 pm

  271. YankeeJosh July 26th, 2007 at 9:54 pm

    Jordan,

You give a fair take. I just think Igawa is a lefty and it’d be best to try and build up his value a bit before either trading him or seeing if he might do smething in the pen someday or improve at all.

But we both agree he should be nowhere near the Yankees now.

  272. mel July 26th, 2007 at 9:54 pm

I’d have signed up for 6 IP, 4 R from Kei. It’s funny – big win streak – one bad game (not even over) with the #5 starter pitching and a few of you are treating it like apocalypse now.

For the record – Igawa’s pitching and Damon + Posada are both out of the lineup.

Relax – it’s one game. Things are still going well – this is Kei’s last start. After that – every starter should give us a puncher’s chance.

  310. Bill Brasky July 26th, 2007 at 10:06 pm

I’d like to see some retalitation for Jeter. Especially if this game gets out of hand. Have Igawa drill Gordon right in the ribs. Or bring in Farnsworth to start throwing beanballs.

… here comes the hook…. we get 4 2/3 IP vs. KC’s bullpen.

    It’s a winnable game kids.

  318. Mick July 26th, 2007 at 10:08 pm

Yeah these broadcaster do blow and its funny because many people complain about old homer sterling

  320. Matt Schweber July 26th, 2007 at 10:10 pm

Tonight is a perfect illustration of why the Yankees need to find room in the lineup for Giambi.

It’s very difficult to come back from a 4-run deficit with only one genuine homerun hitter from one to nine.

  321. jennifer July 26th, 2007 at 10:10 pm

Every home broadcaster is a homer. Sterling just goes over the top from time to time.

ANd everyone can’t point out Sterling cause we are in the largest market in the country.

  325. Bob from NJ July 26th, 2007 at 10:12 pm

For those of you who don’t know, Schilling is a hardcore PC gamer…he’s addicted to the game Everquest. Here’s some excerpts from an interview with him:

Q: With your traveling schedule, how do you find the time to actually play the
game? When and how often do you play?

A: On the road when my family doesn’t travel I play every night, and usually
very, very late. I have a Dell laptop that I play on. At home I play almost
every night. Depending upon the circumstances, sometimes I can pull an all
    nighter :-)

Q: So how hard is it to explain to the other players in the locker room exactly
what Everquest is and why you play it? And have you managed to hook anyone else
    into playing the game?

A: Not really since the only non-baseball opinions that matter to me are my wife
and kids. She obviously hates the game, but my youngest son Gehrig who’s just
turned 6 thinks it’s ‘the bomb’, as he says. Where the hell does a 6 year old
learn that phrase? Anyway he LOVES to sit there and watch me play. I’m close to
starting a character for him and letting him give it a whirl with me helping
him. I walk around like I can’t see anything sometimes, letting him point out
stuff for me to pull or fight. He HATES the spiders outside Karnors. They give
him the creeps, so I’m under orders to kill every one I see when he’s sitting
    there.

    Hilarious.

I live in Florida, have the Extra Innings package through sports in demand and have had to put up with these terrible Royal announcers for 4 nights, why can’t we get 1 night of Yes? What exactly are the Royals doing with their share of the revenue money from us anyway? I have had to resort to muting the TV and putting the Yankees radio broadcast on via the internet but its like 3 pitches behind….on another note close calls at first on Matsui and Molina, good defensive plays, Jeter with that line out, I think its just one of those nights where the ball is not finding the hole at the right time, Royals playing good defense, etc….oh well… Molina is a great addition, light years better than Nieves, good pick-up Cashman!!!

Wow I never thought kei would make it this far in the game.

Well now you can’t hit someone, since someone is on third.

What is the record for most triples in a game?

  353. AL July 26th, 2007 at 10:20 pm

    Here’s what I don’t get… why Igawa??

He can’t pitch obviously. Clippard, C. Wright, DeSalvo are all better options (considering you don’t want to rush Joba, Kennedy, Horne etc).

I’d much rather see DeSalvo still up or Clip rather than Igawa. Lesser of two evils.

Kei’s 27 yrs old (around there I think – someone else can check that)… he’s not getting better.

To be honest – I’d take Hideki Irabu over Igawa. Anyone remember the first three months of the 1998 season? Irabu may have been the best pitcher in the league then. Of course we know how it ended for Humpty Dumpty. But point is I’d take Irabu over Igawa.

  354. Brian M July 26th, 2007 at 10:20 pm

i’m not saying i had a whole lot of respect for 38pitches before, but wow: Scythehands Voxslayer? i’m actually a little surprised he didn’t name his character 38pitches. that’s more in keeping with his ego.

  361. Frosted Flakes July 26th, 2007 at 10:22 pm

  362. Jordan July 26th, 2007 at 10:22 pm

Those lsst two pitches right there ladies and gentlemen are why Kei Igawa does not belong anywhere near a white interlocking NY.

Flat 88 mph fastball up and over the plate followed by a disgusting “breaking” ball that hung up ready to be belted into right center.

  363. jennifer July 26th, 2007 at 10:23 pm

  366. Stuart July 26th, 2007 at 10:23 pm

CLippard, Desalvo, and Igawa are all the same not ready for the big leagues. If you think Desalve or VCLippard are legit big leaguers you are delusional.

Igawa whenever he hangs a pitch like every 12 pitches or so it is hit hard. He has given up like 4 doubles and 2 triples today.

he hangs his breaking ball all the time… He is a joke…

    he has regressed this yr.

  371. jennifer July 26th, 2007 at 10:24 pm

Hey Pete who is getting called up tonight for Kei?

  372. Brian M July 26th, 2007 at 10:25 pm

AL – age isn the issue with Igawa. He is used to playing in a league where you can pitch up in the zone. He gives up so many homers cos those were singles in Japan. They arent generally as physical, dont ahem take their supplements as much, and play more small ball. He needs to adjust his game cos he has the ability to strike guys out. He just has to locate better so his hits arent all homers. He is the best option until Karstens / Hughes is ready to go. He has more big game experience as well. Plus we have a load of dough invested in him. So if the call is even close, hes goin to pitch.

(Clippard got sent down to AA cos he is in free fall. We may never see him in NY again.)

  373. Paolo July 26th, 2007 at 10:25 pm

  378. Cumberberg July 26th, 2007 at 10:27 pm

    dear politically incorrect,
will you be back tomorrow? i’m wondering because you seem to think that if the yanks lose this game, their season is over and none of the next sixty games matters. in fact, based on your comments, you seem to think that games are won or lost in the first couple of innings. presumably the only reason you’re still on the board tonight is because you feel the need for a dramatic “i told you so! i told you so!” post that you’ve probably already written and are just waiting for the final out in the ninth to post.

    regards,

Letting Dotel go, or not signing him for two years was a bad move by Cashman. He was coming back from TJ surgery and not 100% last year. We let him have the season for rehab and didn’t get any rewards. Dotel and Viz would make a nice set up tandem.

  390. Brian M July 26th, 2007 at 10:33 pm

    Guys,

I am beginning to think that fatigue becomes an issue with this team. And I think Torre has a point about being able to rest regulars. He can do that in the outfield but the infield is iffy. Now that Molina is here I think Posada will be able to catch a break. But you look at how many games these guys play in a row, plus the travel, like they have to go to Baltimore probably right after this game is over. What do you guys think?

  393. Joe July 26th, 2007 at 10:34 pm

  396. Jordan July 26th, 2007 at 10:37 pm

    Brian,

He is unstable. I don’t think it’s much of a pressure thing, more of an introvert problem. I forget exactly. I just remember reading last year that he fell apart because of a personality issue or something to that effect. I don’t care if he calls himself Florence Nightingale and sits in a corner wearing high heels. If the kid can get people out, he’s worth a shot.

  397. Brian M July 26th, 2007 at 10:37 pm

  400. Brian M July 26th, 2007 at 10:41 pm

I know nothin about him Jordan so I’m not arguing with you. I just liked the line. I think teams can survive crack pots up to a point but eventually they always get run out of town. Remember Boston put Manny on waivers a few years ago, and San Diego will see Barrett and Bradley get into it before the yr is out.

  401. TKinDC July 26th, 2007 at 10:41 pm

I know Abreu has had a Dow Jones type of year – ( ok, a bad day for this analogy) but I wouldn’t mind seeing him on the squad next year.

We need all of the offense and OBP help we can get and he wears opposing pitchers out.

  402. Brian M July 26th, 2007 at 10:42 pm

Is it just me or has it gotten very quiet around here?

  403. CB July 26th, 2007 at 10:42 pm

    Bronx Born,

I agree with what you are saying. One of the major criticisms of this team has been how thin/ non-existent the bench has been. The team has been ripped for that for months.

Now when there are more players hitting, and some new guys in the mix (phillips, duncan, molina) who actually add depth people are worrying about the everyday line up even more.

You can’t have it both ways. You can’t say you want a deeper bench and then not play those guys. They are there because its a very long season and they all need breathers.

At bats will be scarce but with the age of this team and physical problems key players have had rotating players in the second half is a must.

They’re not playing .650 ball throwing the same 8 guys out there every day.

  404. dontfirecash July 26th, 2007 at 10:43 pm

Is that fake Pete or real Pete who posted? No underline under his name makes me think it is fake pete.

Barrett and Bradley fighting would definately be entertaining.

  406. CB July 26th, 2007 at 10:45 pm

Greinke sufferred from what sounds like an episode of major depression.

That’s a very common condition and not that big a deal. Millions of people have it and do fine.

  407. Bob July 26th, 2007 at 10:46 pm

I’m just glad this series is almost over. 4 straight days of listening to these awful Royals broadcasters and having to watch their blurry pictured broadcast is killing me.

  408. TKinDC July 26th, 2007 at 10:49 pm

The bench has been horrible all year – exacerbated by the fact that Joe T. never seems to trust young’uns until he has no choice, like Melky or Cano.

I am actually happy the Giambi is getting healthier. I think that we are going to get to see him enough to make an assessment about whether he can play first or if he is going to be a bench player.

If you hear Joe T. on the FAN today he was very clear that Melky’s defense and energy are vital to the success of the team. I was so happy to hear that he gets it about this.

So hopefully after last year’s fire drill to get Sheff and Matsui back in the mix, we have time and enough wins to really figure it out.

I want Melky in CF just about every day. If Giambi can play 1B great, otherwise I prefer Damon in the game as DH or spot OF and Giambino as a terrifying stick on the bench.

  410. Brian M July 26th, 2007 at 10:50 pm

The thing with Abreu is the length of the deal. I think I’m right in saying he has an option. At the same money it is touch and go, but maybe the best option available.

He isnt giving us much of a spark but Jones and Hunter are going to cost more in yrs and dollars than we should get into. Byrnes is an energy guy but he asked Arizona for a deal similar to Pierre or Matthews Jr. Rowand could probably get a pretty similar deal somewhere.

I like having Damon and Melky giving the guys on the corners some days off. It keeps guys fresh and means if Damon goes down again we’re not too badly exposed. Someone like Gardner could come up then and have a shot. Maybe by 09 Tabata will be ready or someone else will have come through. I suppose it will be close enough to the end of Damon’s deal to spend big to pick someone up then if Tabata regresses.

All in all I’m not crazy about it but he is probably the best option.

  411. Brian M July 26th, 2007 at 10:51 pm

Anyone heard any updates on Minky? Pete any news?

  412. Stuart July 26th, 2007 at 10:53 pm

Rattacheway comes out of the basement. nice troll…. reruns on TV vland not available????

WHat is it like to be a loser of life??

Terrible game tonight, Yanks did zero right. No clutch hitting or pitching. Igawa hangs 10 pitches per night minimum…..They hit 7 of them every game..

send him down, they cannot afford any more of his lousy starts…

  413. TKinDC July 26th, 2007 at 10:56 pm

My understanding is that the club option on Abreu is $16M for 1 year. Not great, but better than locking up an old/declining outfielder like Hunter, Rowand et al for 3 to 4 years.

  414. CaptainsCorner July 26th, 2007 at 10:56 pm

The best thing out of this game is that Igawa proved once again that he is a disaster and Torre cant spin it that he was good and should stay in the rotation. I would rather see Hughes develop and work with Clemens..that will be fun to watch every 5th day. Igawa is a mess and looks like he was never ever on a mound before. It is hard to believe that he was successful before but now has to be reminded after every pitch to keep the ball down and batting practice isnt a good thing.

  415. Johnny B July 26th, 2007 at 10:58 pm

    Igawa is E-gone-a

  416. YankeeJosh July 26th, 2007 at 11:03 pm

Viz, Proctor and Farnsworth all didn’t pitch tonight. Tomorrow is going to be like a doubleheader for the pen. Two innings in the suspended game and then the regular game. Having Henn close up saves the pen and is not entirely bad.

  417. CB July 26th, 2007 at 11:03 pm

Picking up Abreu at $16 million on his option doesn’t seem like a good move given how he’s played and what he’d likely get on the market.

The length of the deal is obviously attractive.

One of the things that I haven’t been able to figure out is if the Yankees decline the option and Abreu goes somewhere else what would they get as compensation?

He’d be a type A player. Picking up a first round pick and supplemental for him wouldn’t be bad.

Alternatively they could sign him, pick up some of the money, and trade him like sheffield for prospects.

I like Eric Byrnes quite a bit. Does a lot of things well and Arizona clearly doesn’t want him. Runs well, hits for some power, average. Main issue is where you play him. He could go to center and move melky to right? They might be able to get Byrnes for a three year deal which would work well with Tabata/ Jackson’s development.

The other guy available in the off season who’s interesting is Kosuke Fukudome from Japan. A lot of people like him. He’s a true free agent – no posting fee. After Igawa, don’t know if the yankees are going to go back into the Japanese market.

Igawa is signed for 3 nore years. What do they do with him? He’s worthless.

  419. Casual July 26th, 2007 at 11:04 pm

Imagine how Igawa is going to feel when he’s hanging out all by himself in the locher room in SWB for the rest of the year? Man, I bet he wishes he had stayed in Japan. He probably was rich and had tons of girls. Now, he’ll sit there not being able to talk to anyone and thinking of the good ol’ days.

  420. Stuart July 26th, 2007 at 11:06 pm

maybe Igawa will go back to Japan!!!!

Else he better learn some things in the minors and before next yr. he is 27 so he can improve but his breaking ball sucks and at 91 mph he needs more then a fastball.

  421. KAJ July 26th, 2007 at 11:07 pm

3 out of 4 everybody….whoever thinks that we just had 2 win this game is outta their mind. we keep winning series like we have been….2 out of 3,,,,3 out of 4,,,everything is coming up roses !

  422. dontfirecash July 26th, 2007 at 11:07 pm

I’ll be pissed if Igawa is sent down to AAA. He better be going to Tampa(A ball) because he will be occupying a spot in Scranton that should be reserved for Alan Horne.

  423. The artist formerly known as Ben from boston July 26th, 2007 at 11:07 pm

what do they do with igawa? he will pitch BP to the minor leaguers. he isnt good enough to pitch to mlb. im normally optimistic but this is just ridiculous. and can the kansas city tv stop showing pena and his dad everytime they talk about one it is getting so irritating. idk if yes is doing it but we get it. theyre related. get over it

  424. Stuart July 26th, 2007 at 11:07 pm

The KC announcers are very excited. BTW that is Pena’s first walk in 65 games… He makes Cano seem disciplined at the plate…

    65 games without a walk!!!!!!

Henn is looking good as usual. 25 yr old been up and down for 3 yrs but never seems to get any better………

  425. CaptainsCorner July 26th, 2007 at 11:08 pm

I do not understand why Torre is obsessed with thinking that Henn can get major leaguers out. Just because he has a left arm and throws hard does not mean he will be successful. They send him down every month and bring him up and hope he will get people out. He has good stuff but he is not mentally ready for the majors.

  426. The artist formerly known as Ben from boston July 26th, 2007 at 11:10 pm

these kansas city guys are elated that kc is winning. you can tell they dont do this often. something is creeping down their legs if you know what i mean

  427. Stuart July 26th, 2007 at 11:10 pm

They have no one in the pen who can get people out regularyly except mo and vizciano…

that is it… they need to improve the pen..

  428. Batty July 26th, 2007 at 11:11 pm

Truthfully…while I hate Kei he didn’t lose this game (OK, yeah, I know he’ll get the loss but that’s not what I’m talking about). He gave up 4 runs over almost 6 innings. Moose did just one run better yesterday. But not scoring any runs won’t win you any games.

  429. The artist formerly known as Ben from boston July 26th, 2007 at 11:11 pm

stuart do you have mlb tv? these guys are horrible. i hate away games. the guys on the road are so biased and get so excited. OMG THESE ARE THE YANKEES. BOING

  430. TKinDC July 26th, 2007 at 11:11 pm

    CB-

Check out Abreu vs. Byrnes for OPS+.

I’m not a stat-head, but Abreu has never been as bad as Byrnes was last year. I like Byrnes personality, but we don’t need a 3 year contract with him.

With Ichiro getting around $19M/year hitting a million singles, I OK with Abreu, who seems to be well liked by A-Rod and Bowa as well as a mentor to Cano and Melky.

  431. Bronx Born July 26th, 2007 at 11:11 pm

I agree, we are winning series, one after the other. That will keep us moving up in the standings.

I don’t think it is necessarily Torre’s decision to bring Henn up.

  432. The artist formerly known as Ben from boston July 26th, 2007 at 11:14 pm

it only seems bad because theyve been winning a lot. seriously why are we mad about winning 3 of 4? these are the people coming out who predicted the yanks demise two months ago and just want to reaffirm their manhood

  433. The artist formerly known as Ben from boston July 26th, 2007 at 11:16 pm

    TKinDC
I as well have a man crush on byrnes. but the thing is byrnes is an upgrade with the glove. the yanks need a good fielding right fielder. since paul, right has had great arms but not so good gloves. byrnes has both. i say trade abreu for byrnes and valverde ahha

  434. TKinDC July 26th, 2007 at 11:17 pm

    Here is my bullpen vision:

I think in a few weeks we are going to have Joba in the pen, Karstens as the long man, Villone and Myers as our lefties, Farnsy (please God please) in Detroit – its in the NYPost, so it must be true.

Henn down, Viz in the 8th or emergency 7th’s, and the HAMMER of the GODS closing out World Series.

Don’t wake me, this is nice!

  435. The artist formerly known as Ben from boston July 26th, 2007 at 11:18 pm

  437. The artist formerly known as Ben from boston July 26th, 2007 at 11:20 pm

okay the announcer just came… wow im glad to be gone with these guys. I would have prefered a loss two days ago or yesterday so you coul be on a roll going into the next series and build igawas confidence. but i say 3 of 4 AINT BAAd. ill take it

  438. TKinDC July 26th, 2007 at 11:21 pm

    TAFKABFB –

Just because Abreu doesn’t like catching balls near the ground, the fence, teammates, mascots, kentucky blue grass, fescue, pohanna and large weeds doesn’t make him a bad fielder.

He does have a very good and accurate arm and good range.

Unfortunate loss tonight – - – seeya later.

  439. TKinDC July 26th, 2007 at 11:22 pm

    Pete –

BIG THANKS for screening persistent trolls. NICE JOB

The Boston death dive. 6 or 5 1/2 by the end of the night!

  442. Joe Monte July 26th, 2007 at 11:34 pm

Igawa will be sold for $.50 of the day back to Japan in the offseason (hopefully). Thank the lord our organization can take a financial hit in Igawa and Pavano and not miss a beat. Hopefully no problems w/ Hughes next rehab start and we’ll see, as Pete says, on Aug 4th.

Ship Farnsworth for a bag of balls and promote Joba for the bullpen.

  443. Top Cat July 26th, 2007 at 11:34 pm

_The KC announcers are very excited._

That’s the thing about being us, everybody acts as if their Game 7 when we come to town. It’s an extra element we have always have to face. You think KC didn’t circle this date in their calendar months ago. They probably don’t even know who they’re playing tomorrow.

  444. Frosted Flakes July 26th, 2007 at 11:40 pm

According to wiki, “Igawa” is japanese for “wet blanket”

way to kill the momentum, Iggy. I mean, we all where hoping for the best, but dreading the worst. I don’t get that feeling on other days, even when Moose pitches.

  445. YankeeJosh July 26th, 2007 at 11:43 pm

Joe just said they’re not skipping the number 5 starter. *sigh* Credit YES postgame.

  446. joe July 26th, 2007 at 11:47 pm

ya know I am not sure igawa goes to scranton that rotation is crowded with the promotions of kennedy and chamberlain. trenton is pretty full too, welcome to tampa iggy!!

  447. KAJ July 26th, 2007 at 11:49 pm

Peter, you could not be more correct. Nobody should care how much money we wasted on this man. Trade him, send him down, make him the bat boy, whatever. If you are getting shelled by KC, you belong in AA ball !

  448. jonathan July 26th, 2007 at 11:49 pm

igawa is horrible..i love what cashmoney is doing with theyoung arms but kei igawa was not one of his finer moments

  449. jonathan July 26th, 2007 at 11:51 pm

    bring up hughes please

  450. Frosted Flakes July 26th, 2007 at 11:51 pm

  451. MK July 26th, 2007 at 11:51 pm

Yankee fans once again pretending *their* something special.

    hahahahaha

  452. gayle July 26th, 2007 at 11:52 pm

Jennifer just because they are not skipping the number 5 doesnt mean that the number 5 is Igawa maybe they bring up someone anyone to fill the one start (karstens maybe)?? just the idea of seeing igawa again makes me sick and the problem is after watching his potgame interview he doesnt exhude (sp??) any confidence whatsoever that he knows what he is doing or not doing. In some respect you do have to fill badly for him, he has been an utter disgrace in America and probably very embarassed.

At least he didnt go running after this start.

  453. CaptainsCorner July 26th, 2007 at 11:53 pm

Torre saying that they wont skip Igawa makes absolutely no sense. Why would they want to give up his game and gave the team no chance to win…when they dont have to?!!!!??? He is ABSOLUTELY clueless out there!!!His performances are just as bad as his post games. He basically said he doesnt know how to fix himself and he will try to do better next time..Well thanks alot…Hopefully everything goes ok with Hughes next start in AAA and then he will be up here. The organization cant be that stupid to leave this disaster in the majors.

  454. Frosted Flakes July 26th, 2007 at 11:53 pm

    Laughable-

should you be playing dungeons and dragons with 38-doughnuts?

  455. Stuart July 26th, 2007 at 11:53 pm

Eric Byrnes is nothing. The Yanks would never sign him. He is Bobby Kiely with more energy..

Igawa literally has pitched well in 1 game this yr. agaginst Boston out of the pen.. Really in about 20 games 1 good outing… If he pitches again I am going ballistic… He said baseball is a game of adjustments but he has made none..

he said he hung pitches, wow how insightful.. I could tell that and who the f am I!!!!!!

    Igawa sucks, period…………

nice clutch hitting tonight.. Especially Matsui on the 3 and 0 pop out that is unexcusable. Yeah pop out but not on a 3 and 0 count……

who is pitching in the makeup game???????????What one of our stellar pen guys will do there artistry…

  456. Stuart July 26th, 2007 at 11:55 pm

Torre did not say Igawa he said the #5 spot….He did not mention Igawa..

    He better be done…….

  457. Laughable July 26th, 2007 at 11:56 pm

“should you be playing dungeons and dragons with 38-doughnuts?”

I’m too busy reading your hilarious comments. Very creative.

  458. Stuart July 27th, 2007 at 12:01 am

Igawa 11 starts and 1 relief appearance..62 innings.. avg 5 innings per outing.. ERA 6.70..WHIP about 2..

the guys stinks… he has 2 wins and it is AUgust….CLemens has 3 wins in 7 or 8 starts and a ERA over 3 pts lower.

this guy cannot pitch for a team in a playoff drive….
    PATHETIC………

Darrel Rasner and Karstens who I think are marginal at best are better options then him let alone Hughes…..

  459. Lil' Jimmy Norden July 27th, 2007 at 12:02 am

I dont think Igawa is coming back. Boy has he been horrible. But dont be down too long. Just think of the big upgrade were getting; Phil Hughes!

  460. Brian M July 27th, 2007 at 12:03 am

Igawa will go to AAA but Karstens Hughes Ohlendorf and Chamberlain will all be in NY before the season is out. Plenty of room for Horne in Scranton. Clippard will hopefully make it back there too if he pitches well again.

  461. KAJ July 27th, 2007 at 12:08 am

now Ben,,,we don’t know for SURE abou that, now do we ??? LOL….go to bed Ben,,,as will I….Go Yankees

  462. Stuart July 27th, 2007 at 12:09 am

Ohlendorf is not pitching well wither.. his #’s stink….

  463. AL July 27th, 2007 at 12:25 am

Can we lock Igawa in a room with Guissipe Franco and incinerate the key?

  464. CB July 27th, 2007 at 12:27 am

Ohlendorf unfortunately pitched poorly again tonight coming out of the pen.

Hopefully he’ll settle down as he build arm strength from the injury.

These are Eric Byrnes numbers this year:

    .310 14 HR 54RBI 26 Stolen Bases with a .371 OBP

There are not that many players who put up those numbers from the center field position.

Last year he hit 26 HR and had 79 RBI’s and I believe he was hitting lead off.

He’s not a super star in any means and his OBP is poor but you wouldn’t have to pay him a lot of money either.

He’s not ideal in any way but I do think the team needs to get away from the mentality that they need an all star or big name at every position. That has not served them well.

They’ll have to make some decision on who’s going to be in the outfield next year.

Bobby Abreu has been problematic to say the least this year. $16 million for one year next year isn’t an unreasonable thing to consider but he’s far from ideal, never mind at that money.

    ———————————————-

Hey, I hear that The Hanshin Tigers really needs his help now.

  466. E-ROC July 27th, 2007 at 12:36 am

Looks like Iggy won’t be back EVER. Trade him to the Cardinals for Rick Ankiel or John Rodriguez.

Anyway, we had our opportunities; just didn’t get the clutch hits. Can’t win them all. Let’s go sweep the O’s.

  467. JFud25 July 27th, 2007 at 12:37 am

It’s really going to be ironic if the Yanks miss the playoffs by a game or two.

Hughes is ready to go. He was a better pitcher than Igawa even with a bum ankle and hammy.

  468. Brian M July 27th, 2007 at 12:48 am

CB you would have to pay a lot of money for Byrnes. His numbers are nice and Arizona wanted to lock him up but he was asking wayyy more than they anticipted. 5 yrs 50M were the numbers I heard. Considering Matthews Jr’s deal, he might get it or certainly close to it.

  469. CB July 27th, 2007 at 12:56 am

    Brian M,

I actually was under the impression that Arizona really didn’t want him.

Byrnes seems very eager to sign there as he’s a west coast guy and been successful there. For what it’s worth I’ve heard him say he would give Arizona a “home town” discount.

Arizon is absolutely stocked with talented young position players, outfielders in particular. They look at Byrnes as teh guy who’s keeping Justin Upton’s spot warm. They have a lot of good young outfielders and don’t need him.

I could be completely off on this and not sold on him. At anything close to Pierre or Matthews money i wouldn’t consider it.

I was guessing that he might have a bit of a rough time this off season because of all of the talented centerfielders on the market. It’ll be the exact opposite of last off season. With Ichiro off the market that changes a bit. But there is still Hunter, Jones, and Rowand all ahead of Byrnes.

I really have my doubts about Abreu. I’d even consider going with Damon, Melky and Matsui, were it not for how poor the outfield defense would be.

We’ll see. However it is I don’t want on a big total money, long term deal. Hopefully tabata will be ready in three years.

  470. Dean July 27th, 2007 at 1:05 am

Iggy doesn’t belong in New York, period

  471. myrtlebeachfan July 27th, 2007 at 2:02 am

we have to lose at some point.

being upset about this loss is nuts.
