Game 103: Yankees at Orioles

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Jul 27, 2007 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Here are the lineups:

YANKEES
Damon DH
Jeter SS
Abreu RF
Rodriguez 3B
Matsui LF
Posada C
Cano 2B
Phillips 1B
Cabrera CF
Pettitte LHP (6-6, 4.12)

ORIOLES
Roberts 2B
Patterson CF
Markakis RF
Millar 1B
Tejada SS
Huff 3B
Hernandez C
Gibbons DH
Payton LF
Guthrie RHP (6-3, 2.88)

Pregame chatter: This game should start around 8:05 or so. … The Yankees are now 3-4 against Baltimore. … Guthrie pitched well against the Yankees on June 26, holding them to two runs in 6.1 innings. Pettitte also started that night and allowed two runs in 7 innings.

UPDATE, 8:19 p.m.: Every time a pitch is thrown to A-Rod, thousands of flashbulbs pop. It reminds me of the tip-off the NCAA championship game, which I was fortunate to cover six times in a previous job. The Final Four is a very fun event to cover.

UPDATE, 9:24 p.m.: Jeff Karstens had another solid rehab outing for AAA Scranton tonight. In 6 scoreless innings against Lousville, he allowed 2 hits, walked 4 and struck out 4. No word yet on what their plans are for Karstens. But he’d be a better option as a long reliever than Sean Henn at this point.

Jason Giambi’s rehab for Class A Tampa at Fort Myers was rained out.

UPDATE, 10:49 p.m.: Scott Proctor has allowed four homers in his last five outings. That’s not doing much for his trade value. The Yankees should do what San Diego did with Scott Linebrink and trade him while he still has any value.

That’s also 2 runs in the last 19 innings for the Yanks counting the suspended game.

Do they rotate the umps? In about 20 pitches that plate ump screwed up a bunch of calls (1st 2 strikes on Abreu specifically)

  2. KAJ July 27th, 2007 at 7:52 pm

Crawford must be on contract with the Red Sox. Tampa had the bases loaded after Wakefield walked them loaded, and he swings at the very first pitch to ground out to end the inning…..BUM !

  3. VTYankeefan July 27th, 2007 at 7:55 pm

KAJ, when your going after the knuckler sometimes you gotta jump at one that looks good.

  4. Mike NYY July 27th, 2007 at 7:58 pm

What do you think about the Kenny Lofton trade? I think it hurts us

  5. The artist formerly known as Ben from boston July 27th, 2007 at 7:59 pm

wait wait wait wait… if they win can we say the yanks swept the doubleheader. come on just for prosperity. oh yea randy johnson, maybe he strained his back getting pissed at reporters i hear that hurts your lumbar

  6. mel July 27th, 2007 at 7:59 pm

O.K. Looks like the pirahnas aren’t with the Help the Poor Yankees program. Looks like the Indians are jumping all over poor Boof.

  7. The artist formerly known as Ben from boston July 27th, 2007 at 8:01 pm

mike idk if it hurts us or helps but isnt it funny how baseball is so circular. its kind of a what came first the chicken or the egg. its a circle… a circle… no beginning no end. not like a triangle. if you havent seen chuck and larry that is hilarious fyi..

  8. sunny615 July 27th, 2007 at 8:01 pm

    Cleveland is *spanking* Minnesota.

Hope we do the same to Baltimore.

  9. Brian M July 27th, 2007 at 8:01 pm

It is a decent start though. 45 pitches for Wake through 2 innings. I know for him pitch count isnt as important, but still he is struggling. Hammel perfect through 3.

  10. Chicago Dave July 27th, 2007 at 8:01 pm

    Mike:

Perhaps I’m missing something, but why should we be worried about Kenny Lofton?

  11. The artist formerly known as Ben from boston July 27th, 2007 at 8:03 pm

theres always a time where a rookie crashes down to earth does anybodyu else hope its tonight? anybody? is there anyone out there?

  12. LCâ„¢ July 27th, 2007 at 8:03 pm

It’s not supposed to rain in Baltimore right?

  13. The artist formerly known as Ben from boston July 27th, 2007 at 8:03 pm

because he got traded to cleveland dave

  14. Chuckles July 27th, 2007 at 8:04 pm

    Hey Pete,

It’s Game 103 — just so you know.

  15. TKinDC July 27th, 2007 at 8:04 pm

Having Kenny Lofton on the Indians will just make it that much more enjoyable when we lap them in the WC race. He is an ingrate and a team cancer.

Lets hope we do better against the O’s SP than last time – Go Yanks!

  16. Chicago Dave July 27th, 2007 at 8:06 pm

    Ben -

Well, the Yankee hitters sure looked like they were in a rush to finish the suspended game…Hopefully they bear down a bit more against Guthrie. Otherwise, it could be another slow night, offensively-speaking.

At least they’ve seen Guthrie before…If this was their first time against them, I’d say the Yanks were in trouble for sure (give their distinct lack of success against first-timers). So, hopefully that plays in their favor, too.

  17. Brian M July 27th, 2007 at 8:06 pm

For a moment I was thinking that if ARod opts out of his deal and saves some cash for Texas, and if they get Salty and someone half decent for Texiera and bring back Gagne, they could have a decent club next yr. Then I looked at the rest of their roster and thought, no they’ll still be a mess. That division has gone from pretty strong to one where Seattle look like a good ball club. That is scary.

  18. jennifer July 27th, 2007 at 8:07 pm

Is Lofton a difference maker?? I’m not to sure about that.

  19. The artist formerly known as Ben from boston July 27th, 2007 at 8:07 pm

im all for womens rights but i hate this female announcer trend. atleast hire women who know shit not just eye candy. im sure ill be attacked but come on hazel mae? SHE WAS BORN IN TORONTO!!! shes canadian this isnt hockey!

  20. The artist formerly known as Ben from boston July 27th, 2007 at 8:08 pm

dave we got this thats all i have to say. WHAT TIME IS IT!!!!?

  21. Chicago Dave July 27th, 2007 at 8:08 pm

Frankly, I don’t care who Kenny Lofton plays for…Yes, he was doing OK down in Texas, but it’s not like Clevland just picked up (a healthy) David Ortiz or anything. If Cleveland soars or falters from here on out, it will be because of their pitching. Their offense (and defense) wasn’t really a problem to begin with…so, again, I don’t see Lofton as a real “impact” acquisition that’s going to change the race in any big way.

  22. KAJ July 27th, 2007 at 8:13 pm

what the heck was that ? Nobody in NY really wants this Millar joker at 1st, do we ?

  23. jennifer July 27th, 2007 at 8:15 pm

No I don’t want Millar here. Andy is doing just fine.

  24. UNCYankee July 27th, 2007 at 8:15 pm

I am going to the games this weekend. The weather channel says 60% chance of rain and the National Weather Service says 20%. What is the deal?

  25. Chicago Dave July 27th, 2007 at 8:15 pm

KAJ – Huh? I don’t follow…What’s this about Millar? (again, I’m out here in Chicago, so if they made some comment about Millar on the game broadcast, I didn’t hear it)

  26. KAJ July 27th, 2007 at 8:16 pm

    UNCYankee,,,news flash…both of them know NOTHING…

  27. Chicago Dave July 27th, 2007 at 8:17 pm

UNCYankee – The deal is most weathermen have no clue what Mother Nature is going to do at any given moment! ;)

  28. The artist formerly known as Ben from boston July 27th, 2007 at 8:17 pm

IS NOBODY GOING TO SAY GAME TIME?!

  29. jennifer July 27th, 2007 at 8:17 pm

Go ALEX!!! lots of cheers lots of boos. LOL

  30. KAJ July 27th, 2007 at 8:17 pm

    did anyone hear a crash ?…Ben ???

  31. jennifer July 27th, 2007 at 8:18 pm

Is it a different ump behind the plate than it was for the suspended game?

  32. Andrea July 27th, 2007 at 8:18 pm

I think that Kaj should join our optimist club. What do my fellow optimists think?

  33. KAJ July 27th, 2007 at 8:18 pm

    GAME TIME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  34. The artist formerly known as Ben from boston July 27th, 2007 at 8:18 pm

the rod, the yankees, and ask the baltimore announcers to NEVER call the rod “the birthday boy” ever again. k thanks bye

  35. KAJ July 27th, 2007 at 8:19 pm

Andrea, do I need to learn a secret handshake ?

  36. Andrea July 27th, 2007 at 8:19 pm

I hope the crowds calm down a little. Either that or I hope he hits #500 REAL soon.

  37. jennifer July 27th, 2007 at 8:19 pm

Andrea I haven’t seen enough posts to determine if they should be allowed to join.

  38. The artist formerly known as Ben from boston July 27th, 2007 at 8:19 pm

well since i just said game time i think that is a novel idea andrea.

  39. The artist formerly known as Ben from boston July 27th, 2007 at 8:20 pm

wow now the announcer (while watching the flash from cameras) just said “twinkle twinkle little star” can mlbtv switch me over to yes

  40. jennifer July 27th, 2007 at 8:20 pm

Andrea I want him to wait till tomorrow, unless it helps us win. I will be there and would love to witness it.

Can we NOT swing at the first pitch!! UGH MATSUI!!

  41. Chicago Dave July 27th, 2007 at 8:21 pm

    Andrea:

Just so I’m clear…What are the qualifications/requirements to be considered for membership in the club? (I’m sure I’d never make the cut, but I am curious…)

  42. jennifer July 27th, 2007 at 8:21 pm

Are they smoking something in the booth?

  43. KAJ July 27th, 2007 at 8:21 pm

that is totally OK. We are taking our licks and I fully expect our pitcher to be ON 2nite…..Tampa still demolishing Boston 1-0 !

  44. Andrea July 27th, 2007 at 8:21 pm

Kaj: we’re still working on the secret handshake. The only requirement is that you remain optimistic, and even if our beloved team ends up winning 60 games this season, we take joy in watching them play and we take joy in ever great play that happens on the field, whether it’s in a losing game or a winning game. In other words, we don’t ride the bitter bus at the end of a disappointing season like those fools up in Boston (with the exclusion of Ben, as he is an exception to the “you live in boston you must love the sox” rule).

  45. Chicago Dave July 27th, 2007 at 8:23 pm

Andrea: Well, since I am unable to feel joy whenever my Yanks lose, I guess I’ll never make the grade… Still, there’s room enough on this bus for everyone, isn’t there?

  46. The artist formerly known as Ben from boston July 27th, 2007 at 8:24 pm

if i lived in ny id probably be a sox fan.. i shave against the grain lets just say. okay i promise to never say that again. and yea we just love the game of baseball of course we love to watch the yanks win but even if they do we stay positive and try to enjoy the game. and we dont say “who cares theyre down 40 games anyway” cause we realize the playoffs are less than a tenth of the season

  47. TKinDC July 27th, 2007 at 8:24 pm

I’m OK with that inning, we did more damage against Guthrie there than we did the last time we saw him except for Damon’s dinger.

  48. jennifer July 27th, 2007 at 8:24 pm

Roll call!! LOL the creatures rule!!

  49. LCâ„¢ July 27th, 2007 at 8:24 pm

LOL the Yanks fans are doing the roll call.

  50. Andrea July 27th, 2007 at 8:25 pm

Jen–I’ll be rooting for him to hit #500 for you tomorrow! While I’d liike him to wait until August 1 since that’s the nxt game I’m going to, I’m not going to be selfish and hope he doesn’t hit one til then. I’ll be content for #510 or something similar.

I got to be there for Jorge’s #200. I was prety psyched about that since I think he’s a great guy, a great player and a great Yankee.

Good job Andy! I miss him wearing the high socks, though.

  51. VTYankeefan July 27th, 2007 at 8:25 pm

Everytime I see D. Navarro in the TB lineup I always think Dave Navarro. LOL

  52. KAJ July 27th, 2007 at 8:25 pm

Andy has a perfect game going !

  53. The artist formerly known as Ben from boston July 27th, 2007 at 8:25 pm

no no dave nobody feels joy when they lose but we try to look for the positives. at least we saw a good game of baseball . is what wed say or atleast so-n-so snapped his hitless streak

  54. The artist formerly known as Ben from boston July 27th, 2007 at 8:26 pm

vtfan: as do i. you know he turned carmen electra into a lesbian?

  55. Andrea July 27th, 2007 at 8:26 pm

chicago Dave: we dont’ find joy in their losing, but we find good things about the games they play. Even when the Yankees lose, there is usually something great going on. And if there’s nothing great, then we can get upset. But we are NOT those people who give up on the season with every losing streak. We still think they’ve got a chance at the division! right guys?

  56. Chicago Dave July 27th, 2007 at 8:27 pm

Random question…Anyone know what’s the highest number of pitches Wakefield has ever thrown in a game? (Since he’s pitching tonight and he’s already past 70 pitches in the 4th inning – and with the whole “pitch count doesn’t matter for Wakefield thing – this question just occurred to me.)

  57. KAJ July 27th, 2007 at 8:27 pm

    Andy has a 1-hitter going !!!

  58. The artist formerly known as Ben from boston July 27th, 2007 at 8:27 pm

kaj that almost killed the perfect game haha

  59. jennifer July 27th, 2007 at 8:27 pm

    KAJ, you jinxed him!!

Yeah where are the high socks!!??

  60. The artist formerly known as Ben from boston July 27th, 2007 at 8:27 pm

and that DID. the almost was him almost hitting markakis

  61. KAJ July 27th, 2007 at 8:28 pm

Everyone mark down HIDP and let’s move on to the 2nd !

  62. KAJ July 27th, 2007 at 8:29 pm

OK…I see 2 outs already…pay no attention to the silly man behind the curtain…..THREE OUTS…sweet !

  63. The artist formerly known as Ben from boston July 27th, 2007 at 8:29 pm

    KAJ WILL YOU STOP HAHA

  64. Andrea July 27th, 2007 at 8:30 pm

jennifer: I’m glad someone else misses the high socks on Mr. Pettitte. Maybe when Clemens is sporting them he doesn’t want Andy to wear them too. He gets sensitive when he’s wearing the same outfit as somoene else.

  65. jennifer July 27th, 2007 at 8:30 pm

For those interested Jeff is making a start in Scranton

    http://ad.doubleclick.net/adi/.....;ord=12345

not sure the link will work

    5 ip 2 h 4bb 4 so

  66. Chicago Dave July 27th, 2007 at 8:31 pm

Is there anyone else out there tonight besides the handful of people that have posted comments already?

  67. jennifer July 27th, 2007 at 8:31 pm

Okay don’t click the link it doesn’t work. I tried to link gameday for jeff’s game.

  68. Andrea July 27th, 2007 at 8:31 pm

    jennifer: maybe I’m dumb…who’s Jeff?

  69. Josh July 27th, 2007 at 8:31 pm

YESSS i think hughes is going to be pitching on monday for AAA, if thats the case, its in Rochester and i live 5 min away from the ballpark! WOOHOO!

  70. KAJ July 27th, 2007 at 8:31 pm

Check out Boston playing Tampa…losing 1-0,,,Where is the argument now…ANYONE can score runs in bunches on the Tampa pitching, they are not even major leaguers……where is that argument now ? Did Tampa suddenly get super good, OR..could it be true that Boston is starting its annual fade out ???

  71. jennifer July 27th, 2007 at 8:32 pm

I have to pack soon. I’m sooo lazy, I don’t even know what to bring. I know i’ll forget things. At least i’m going shopping before i get to Baltimore.

  72. Andrea July 27th, 2007 at 8:32 pm

Michael Kay just said “I’m not going to explain it again.” Someone please mark this down. This, I believe, is the first, and possibly the last, time Kay will ever refuse to talk.

  73. TKinDC July 27th, 2007 at 8:32 pm

    Chicago –

    We few, we happy few.

  74. jennifer July 27th, 2007 at 8:32 pm

    Karstens.

  75. KAJ July 27th, 2007 at 8:33 pm

I am confused. Did Posada just take strike 3 right down the middle of the plate ? Is there a strategy working that I am not aware of ?

  76. Cumberberg July 27th, 2007 at 8:33 pm

Andrea — At least your not stuck watching the O’s telecast. At least Jim Palmer isn’t on tonight.

  77. Chicago Dave July 27th, 2007 at 8:34 pm

Kay should have stuck to radio…I know I’m in the minority, but I actually liked Kay when he was a radio announcer!

  78. Andrea July 27th, 2007 at 8:34 pm

Kaj: that’s what I’m thinking. And I hate when people say “sure you scored 21 runs but it was against the devil rays.” I mean, it would be more impressive if htere were a score of 21 against the Red Sox or Detroit, but it still takes skill to score 21 runs and hit 6 home runs in one game (unless you’re facing Kei Igawa).

I’m surprised Tampa hasn’t scored more against Wakefield.

  79. dontfirecash July 27th, 2007 at 8:35 pm

omg, sterling is soo ridiculous with his premature hr calls

  80. dontfirecash July 27th, 2007 at 8:35 pm

“that ball is high, it is far, it is caught.” Sterling seriously needs some help calling homeruns.

  81. Andrea July 27th, 2007 at 8:36 pm

jennifer: I knew I was dumb. I was racking my brain, and all I could think was Jeff the cop that lives down the street from me. I think I need a nap. I like Jeff Karstens. It broke my heart a little when I walked into the Stadium justin time to see Julio Lugo hit a line drive into his knee :(

  82. Cumberberg July 27th, 2007 at 8:37 pm

dontfirecash — you should heard buck martinez when roberts hit the high foul in the first game. though he was going to wet himself. the cameraman too.

  83. VTYankeefan July 27th, 2007 at 8:37 pm

Jennifer here is a working link: http://web.minorleaguebaseball.....8;sid=t416

  84. jennifer July 27th, 2007 at 8:38 pm

    thanks VTY.

  85. TKinDC July 27th, 2007 at 8:39 pm

    GREAT HUSTLE MELKY!

  86. jennifer July 27th, 2007 at 8:39 pm

Nice JOB Andy, and Melk. Melky chugged to third and got in just ahead of the tag. Ball beat him tag didn’t.

  87. Cumberberg July 27th, 2007 at 8:39 pm

wow! melk did look kinda out though.

  88. Brian M July 27th, 2007 at 8:39 pm

I’m here Dave, but I need to get some work done tonight so you’ll be spared most of my babbling tonight.

  89. Chicago Dave July 27th, 2007 at 8:39 pm

    Who’s Johnny Damon?! Go Melk-Man!!!

  90. Andrea July 27th, 2007 at 8:40 pm

Cumberberg: watching the O’s announcers must suck. When I listen to other announcers, I am suddenly thankful for Michael Kay and the barrage of former Yankees (and Ken Singletom–can someone PLEASE explain to me what he has to do with the Yankees?).

Suck it up, Aubrey Huff. Melky was safe! What kind of name is Aubrey anyway?

  91. jennifer July 27th, 2007 at 8:40 pm

One thing, even though Melky made it. He wasn’t running hard all the way made it WAY to close. Should be spoken to about that.

  92. Cumberberg July 27th, 2007 at 8:41 pm

damn, really nice play by tejeda. tip the cap.

  93. mel July 27th, 2007 at 8:41 pm

They should add a new rule, tags to the crotch do not count. Nice play Melky.

  94. sunny615 July 27th, 2007 at 8:41 pm

Is anyone besides me having wierd things happen with Gameday? It showed Melky’s triple well into the white behind the wall. I thought it was a homer…? Is GameDay mapping Camden Yards right?

  95. Andrea July 27th, 2007 at 8:42 pm

lol mel. Melky should sue Huff for sexual harassment.

  96. Chicago Dave July 27th, 2007 at 8:42 pm

Just checked out that link to the SWB game…Looking at the SWB lineup, I noticed Andy Canizzaro’s name…Hasn’t that guy been toiling in the minors forever, or am I mistaken?!

  97. jennifer July 27th, 2007 at 8:43 pm

    Jeff, 6 ip 2h 4bb 4so

Looks good enough to bring up. Make him the long man. But who do you send out. keep in mind Kei is already gone. Likely Henn?

  98. jennifer July 27th, 2007 at 8:44 pm

Not sure Chicago, but the Yankees did bring him up in Sept of last year.

  99. Chicago Dave July 27th, 2007 at 8:44 pm

jennifer – I’d send Henn down in favor of Karstens, definitely.

P.S. – Where the heck is Rasner these days?

  100. Andrea July 27th, 2007 at 8:44 pm

They’d probably send out Basak. Torre will forget he exists again anyway.

  101. jennifer July 27th, 2007 at 8:45 pm

I haven’t heard anything on Rasner. :( I guess rehab isn’t going too well. I’ll email pete.

  102. Cumberberg July 27th, 2007 at 8:45 pm

Andrea — It really is like being in purgatory. The worst is Jim Palmer. That dude just can’t get over the size of the Yankee payroll. It is such a tired refrain. “The Yankees only win because they have money…” “O’s would never have lost Moose if they had had more money…” “The Yankees don’t play hard because they’re so rich…” Blah. Blah. Blah. Blah. I’d mute the TV, but I like hearing the sounds of the game (and all the Yankee fans cheering). If only my remote would let me mute the color commentary….

  103. Andrea July 27th, 2007 at 8:46 pm

I LOVE that Pettitte always tries to get a ball up the middle. Love it.

  104. Chicago Dave July 27th, 2007 at 8:46 pm

Guthrie has thrown 20 (or so) pitches per inning through the first two…Keep that up and we’ll get him out of there in no time!

  105. Matthew July 27th, 2007 at 8:46 pm

Do the Yankees ever get Ramon Hernandez out. I mean I only see him against us but I’d guess he was hitting 600 the way he kills the Yanks.

  106. Andrea July 27th, 2007 at 8:47 pm

Cumberberg: The TV in my kitchen actually has something wrong with the sound…when I watch games, the announcers are muffled but the sounds of the game are amplified. It’s pretty much the perfect TV. Except when Paul O’Neill is commenting. I like hearing him.

  107. Cumberberg July 27th, 2007 at 8:47 pm

why wouldn’t you send down basak over henn? i had to think for a minute to remember whether he’s an OF or an INF.

  108. Chicago Dave July 27th, 2007 at 8:48 pm

Whenever I see Jay Gibbons’ face on Gameday I think of “Chunk” from “Goonies”…Does that make me strange?!

  109. jennifer July 27th, 2007 at 8:48 pm

I heard one of the reasons Mike didn’t re-sign with the O’s was because NOT ONE player called him to ask him to come back. The GREAT Cal didn’t call him. Mean while he had a number of Yankee players calling him. I’m not saying money had nothing to do with it. But there were other factors besides money.

  110. Andrea July 27th, 2007 at 8:50 pm

You know what? It costs a lot to live in New York. It’s a pain in the ass to deal with living in New York, even if you’re not famous. When you’re famous you have to deal with the likes of the NY Post up in your business all the time. The guys on the Yankees deserve extra money, just for the extra living expenses and for having to deal with all this crap.

  111. KAJ July 27th, 2007 at 8:50 pm

no need to panic…all is well…good pitchers bear down in these situations and he should have been out of the inning with that last batter….he will retire this batter and all will be fine….deep breaths….

  112. jennifer July 27th, 2007 at 8:51 pm

Do you know the Post is still running that cover of Alex with the blond. They have in the ad’s of their paper with their paper.

  113. Cumberberg July 27th, 2007 at 8:51 pm

I’ve had a couple of long-time O’s fans tell me that Cal was kind of a dick and that he used to get different travel and lodging accomodations and perks than his teammates. Now, Eddie Murray, there’s a hero of the people.

  114. KAJ July 27th, 2007 at 8:52 pm

    never a doubt ! LOL !

  115. Chicago Dave July 27th, 2007 at 8:52 pm

    KAJ – Good call!!!

  116. jennifer July 27th, 2007 at 8:52 pm

I heard from someone who runs card shows, that he isn’t very nice. that this is all phony. I can’t recall exactly what Cal said or did. But just that he isn’t as nice as he seems.

  117. Andrea July 27th, 2007 at 8:52 pm

    good call Kaj!

jennifer: that’s appalling. But not surprising. The Post is such a rag.

As much as I love A-Rod, I’m getting kind of tired of Kay letting us know exactly when he’ll be up. We know the line-up. Don’t turn this into a Barry Bonds-esque display.

  118. Cumberberg July 27th, 2007 at 8:52 pm

the nypost is a total rag.

  119. Brian M July 27th, 2007 at 8:53 pm

Oh boy. Hammel on a 1 hitter through 5.1 innings decides to walk CORA and LUGO. Obviously a good move with Youk and Papi hitting behind them. 3- 1 Boston.

When Tampa manages to get some decent starts from their guys they have to put some runs up or they will never compete in this division

  120. Chicago Dave July 27th, 2007 at 8:53 pm

Cumberberg – Eddie Murray! HA!!! That was a good one… Eddie makes Mike Mussina look like Mr. Sunshine!!

  121. VTYankeefan July 27th, 2007 at 8:54 pm

    Youki homered sox lead 3-1.

  122. will July 27th, 2007 at 8:55 pm

is it just me, or is ‘big papi’ one of the worst nicknames. i cringe any time i hear it. i don’t know what it is, but i refuse to ever use that.

  123. Chicago Dave July 27th, 2007 at 8:55 pm

I personally never thought Cal Ripken seemed like all that nice a guy whenever I saw (or still see) him interviewed on TV. You can definitely see a strong dickhead streak running beneath the surface with him…

  124. Cumberberg July 27th, 2007 at 8:56 pm

just for fun, i went to the nypost website, looked no further than the headline “hit my baby one more time: brit’s boy bashed in vegas brawl”…

  125. Andrea July 27th, 2007 at 8:58 pm

will: “big papi” grosses me out too. I hate it.

  126. jennifer July 27th, 2007 at 8:58 pm

Will it isn’t just you. I can’t stand it.

  127. KAJ July 27th, 2007 at 8:59 pm

    500 !

  128. Andrea July 27th, 2007 at 8:59 pm

Guthrie looks like he’s afraid of A-Rod. I guess he doesn’t want to be the guy to give up #500.

  129. TKinDC July 27th, 2007 at 8:59 pm

talk about a jinx (which I don’t believe in) The O’s network just showed a close-up of the special A-Rod balls being carried to the HP ump.

  130. KAJ July 27th, 2007 at 8:59 pm

    …if he would’ve hit that straight….

  131. Cumberberg July 27th, 2007 at 9:00 pm

Could this be a troll-free environment tonight?

  132. jennifer July 27th, 2007 at 9:01 pm

Who would have ever thought that k-fed would make a better parent than Britney. LOL What a wack job that woman is. YOu can take the girl out of the trailer but you can’t take the trailer out of the girl. Total trailer trash.

  133. Brian M July 27th, 2007 at 9:02 pm

OK the people have spoken, from now on he shall simply be called Pap. According to dictionary.com that would make him baby food, a worthless idea or well, a nipple.

  134. dontfirecash July 27th, 2007 at 9:02 pm

Good news on one of my favorite Yankee prospects. McCallister continues to domintae in SI. His line so far tonight is 5 5 0 0 6. He has the ability to strike people out and induce ground balls at a high rate. Hope he keeps it up and next season we’ll see him at Tampa.

  135. Chicago Dave July 27th, 2007 at 9:03 pm

The whole 500 HR thing is cool, but the unfortunate part of it is that the longer A-Rod goes without hitting it, the more he is going to press and get out of his rhythm as a hitter. So, hopefully he pops it out soon and everything can get back to normal…

  136. TKinDC July 27th, 2007 at 9:03 pm

good news – 54 pitches already by Guthrie. He has one of the best batting avg. against this year so if we can get him out of there it is a good thing.

  137. Doreen July 27th, 2007 at 9:04 pm

Random thought, courtesy of my hubby:

Wouldn’t it be awful if A-Rod finally hits #500 in a game that subsequently gets rained out before it’s official??????!

  138. Cumberberg July 27th, 2007 at 9:04 pm

I remember watching a NESN game last year and the announcer started talking about “David” and I couldn’t figure out who the hell he was talking about.

  139. jennifer July 27th, 2007 at 9:04 pm

As much as i’d like to see it. I don’t want Alex pressing and screwing up his swing. Just get it over with.

  140. Brian M July 27th, 2007 at 9:05 pm

Meanwhile that home run by Youk has convinced the Tampa pitchers that the safest course of action is just to walk every batter. That way nobody can get any hits. Why did noone think of this before??

  141. Rattachewy July 27th, 2007 at 9:06 pm

Indians and Red Sox won (winning) tonight. Looks like the Yanks will drop back a game in the loss column.

  142. TKinDC July 27th, 2007 at 9:06 pm

    jenn –

did you see pete’s article about the pitcher who served up #499? The guy said that if he could have walked up to the plate and placed the ball he would have put it where he threw it. A-Rod is blessed with the ability to take a normal swing and have the ball sail 350′.

Now if we could just lock him up for, i don’t know, like the rest of his life!

  143. jennifer July 27th, 2007 at 9:07 pm

    From Pete
    re: Rasner

    * still working on being able to grip the ball correctly so he can throw it. it’ll be a while, if at all this season. his finger was pretty messed up.

  144. dontfirecash July 27th, 2007 at 9:07 pm

haha i gave the wrong line on McAllister, he didn’t walk 6 guys, he struck out 6 guys. 5 5 0 0 0 6. And Andy Petite is seriously living on the edge.

  145. Andrea July 27th, 2007 at 9:07 pm

on the plus side, he doesn’t look like 2005 post-season A-Rod, which is a good thing.

  146. Brian M July 27th, 2007 at 9:07 pm

I’m trying to think positive but I got a bad feelin about this game.

  147. TKinDC July 27th, 2007 at 9:07 pm

Cumberberg – there is your troll (ratt) sighting.

  148. Chicago Dave July 27th, 2007 at 9:07 pm

Brian – Tampa beating the BoSox is always a gift… Outside of Kazmir, they really don’t have anyone on that starting staff that inspires confidence.

  149. KAJ July 27th, 2007 at 9:08 pm

Lucky Charms, I Mean Coco Crisp left the bags loaded.. Tampa still very much in the game, only down 3-1….here comes the GIDP NOW !….everybody go get a snack !

  150. Andrea July 27th, 2007 at 9:09 pm

Chicago Dave: but Kazmir is quite good. How do they have one great pitcher and then sit there with a crap roster?

  151. jennifer July 27th, 2007 at 9:10 pm

Andy needs to stop living on the edge!! No Aerosmith music for you ANDY!!

  152. dontfirecash July 27th, 2007 at 9:11 pm

    Andrea,
You are certainly right that outside of Kazmir and Shields, Tampa’s pitching is pathetic. And I know you always hear this regarding Tampa, but they have some serious pitching prospects. Mcgee, Davis, Niemman and Price is a pretty damn good foursome.

  153. Cumberberg July 27th, 2007 at 9:11 pm

i’m enjoying the crowd here on lohud tonight. much more pleasant w/o all the negative nancies.

  154. will July 27th, 2007 at 9:11 pm

‘ortiz’ is ok. papi, big papi, pap, or anything like that definately not. (sorry, i live in tampa, so the sox rays game is on)
Andy seems to really be working to get out of jams tonight. he’s a gamer, and is really doing everything he can for this team. very different than last nights game.

  155. will July 27th, 2007 at 9:12 pm

the ray’s starter, hammell, pitched pretty well. left the game giving up only 1 hit. but i guess we all saw what the rays bpen’s like when we played them

  156. TKinDC July 27th, 2007 at 9:13 pm

Andy’s a gamer beyond any question, but is he hurt? He has been awful for about a month. Rocket should give him lessons on getting out of innings in less than 30 pitches

  157. Andrea July 27th, 2007 at 9:13 pm

    How is the O’s bullpen? I don’t really remember….

  158. Brian C July 27th, 2007 at 9:14 pm

    Wow, pettitte looks horrendous tonight

  159. Chicago Dave July 27th, 2007 at 9:14 pm

“Lucky Charms, I Mean Coco Crisp left the bags loaded..”

If Boston’s pitching wasn’t doing so well this year, people would really be piling on Theo Epstein about the Crisp and Lugo deals… But instead, because the Sox’ strong pitching essentially made up for Lugo and Crisp, everyone started talking about what a genius move it was to get Dice-K. Funny how things work, isn’t it?

  160. jennifer July 27th, 2007 at 9:14 pm

Andy needs to stop doing this!! UGH, he’s just not sharp! But he is battling.

  161. Andrea July 27th, 2007 at 9:14 pm

TKinDC-I was thinking that. Ever since that game that he went 1 1/3 or something.

  162. Matthew July 27th, 2007 at 9:15 pm

well, dumb me, i know ramon would get a hit

  163. Cumberberg July 27th, 2007 at 9:15 pm

O’s bullpen is pretty good. Ray is on the DL.

  164. dontfirecash July 27th, 2007 at 9:15 pm

Ughh, that was bound to happen with the way Petite was pitching.

  165. jennifer July 27th, 2007 at 9:15 pm

Would have been better off walking him :(

Yeah what is up with Andy? He hasn’t been sharp for a bunch of starts. :(

  166. Andrea July 27th, 2007 at 9:15 pm

    Poor Andy :(

  167. KAJ July 27th, 2007 at 9:16 pm

3-1 is NOT a huge lead…we will come back easily !

  168. dontfirecash July 27th, 2007 at 9:16 pm

Andy is getting murdered out there. He has been seriously lucky to only give up 3 runs.

  169. Andrea July 27th, 2007 at 9:17 pm

Too bad Ray is on the DL. He’s one of A-Rod’s BFFs.

  170. Hello July 27th, 2007 at 9:17 pm

It seems like every since Andy talked about the how he felt certain players we”re going through the motions earlier in the season he himself hasn’t been the same.

  171. Brian C July 27th, 2007 at 9:17 pm

hurt or not, something is very wrong with pettitte

  172. jennifer July 27th, 2007 at 9:17 pm

Looks like we will burn the pen tonight. Roger and wanger need to go long the next two days. :(

  173. Chicago Dave July 27th, 2007 at 9:18 pm

I think someone mentioned this before…Ramon Hernandez becomes Shoeless Joe Jackson whenever he faces the Yanks…Unbelieavable!!!

In all seriousness, I think Andy’s elbow must be giving him trouble again. I think he’s probably gutting it out because he knows how much the Yanks’ need him in the rotation, but he just isn’t “right”…time to get him checked out for injury.

  174. Andrea July 27th, 2007 at 9:18 pm

Ok. That looked a lot uglier than it was. We just need consistent runs scored and we’ll be good to go :)

  175. ansky July 27th, 2007 at 9:18 pm

Ever since he got pissy about the team’s performance a couple starts back, Andu has been out of wack.

Call it the curse of the pep talk.

  176. Brian M July 27th, 2007 at 9:18 pm

I agree Chicago Dave I wasnt expecting a Tampa win tonight. I just cant believe that a team with an OK linup could get given 5 perfect innings by their starter and not manage to carve out some runs for him. I amnt watching the game (keeping up with it on gameday) but Wake was walking guys early and has had a rough month. I dunno maybe he managed to get a feel for the knuckleabll as he settled in. Just seems like those are the situations you need to pounce on. Kasmir can only pitch every 5 days so decent starts by other guys become twice as important.

  177. River Ave Report July 27th, 2007 at 9:19 pm

    LET’S GO YANKEES

  178. Andrea July 27th, 2007 at 9:20 pm

Clemens has been going 7 innings. Didn’t he go 8 against the Angels? (I can’t remember–I couldn’t watch the game cause I was in stupid London). So I have faith that he and Wang can give the bullpen some breaks.

  179. Pepper Brooks July 27th, 2007 at 9:21 pm

I think Pettitte is hurt. He is just missing the strike zone badly and getting blistered. leads are no safer with him than they are with Farnsworth.

  180. Kj July 27th, 2007 at 9:21 pm

    Wow Andys got nothing tonight.

  181. TKinDC July 27th, 2007 at 9:22 pm

We need the bats to wake up for sure. It is hot and humid in Baltimore so the back problems Andy had early in the year should be relatively ok.

  182. Chicago Dave July 27th, 2007 at 9:23 pm

My guess is Andy goes 5 innings, even if he gives up a few more runs and throws close to 100 pitches to get that far. Igawa’s start already taxed the bullpen…

I bet we see Proctor, Bruney AND “Da Farns” before the night is out, though.

  183. jennifer July 27th, 2007 at 9:23 pm

Do the people who write for mlb.com even watch the games? The game was very close when Mike pitched. They only scored after he left the game.

    * Yankees: Mussina was backed by the Yankees? offense on Wednesday and captured his first victory since June 29 against Oakland. The right-hander limited the Royals to six hits and one run over 5 2/3 innings, breaking a string of three starts without a win. Mussina walked two and struck out four in the winning effort.

  184. TKinDC July 27th, 2007 at 9:24 pm

It’d be nice if Cano could pop one, he flied out to the deepest part last AB

  185. sunny615 July 27th, 2007 at 9:24 pm

looks like the lefties are sucking again.

  186. mel July 27th, 2007 at 9:25 pm

I’m so sick of hearing about Guthrie. Go back to talking about Ripken already. Ugh.

  187. Cumberberg July 27th, 2007 at 9:25 pm

Bats, they are sick. Straightball they hit it very much. Curveball, bats are afraid. We ask Jobu to come, take fear from bats.

  188. Pepper Brooks July 27th, 2007 at 9:26 pm

What is the deal with the hitters tonight? 2 hits?

Are they asleep from the late arrival?

  189. Andrea July 27th, 2007 at 9:28 pm

Wow. Abreu hit the wall. And he didn’t die! Perhaps this should serve as a lesson to him!

  190. TKinDC July 27th, 2007 at 9:29 pm

That should have been caught — – Abreu’s fear of solid objects strikes again darnit!!!!

  191. Josh July 27th, 2007 at 9:30 pm

does anyone know if hughes is scheduled to pitch sunday or monday for SWB?

  192. Andrea July 27th, 2007 at 9:30 pm

Michael Kay just made a pop culture reference to Justin Timberlake.

    I don’t like it.

  193. Pepper Brooks July 27th, 2007 at 9:30 pm

Hmm.. just started watching but the yankees look really flat and disinterested in this game. I am guessing another run and that will do it for any shot at a win.

  194. Chicago Dave July 27th, 2007 at 9:30 pm

mel – I know you don’t want to hear about Guthrie again, but the truth is he’s getting stronger as the game goes on. He threw 42 pitches through the first two innings, but has only needed 22 to get through inning 3 and 4. Not a good trend…

  195. ansky July 27th, 2007 at 9:30 pm

i thought spikes and knives were going to come out of the wall when Bobby jumped for that

  196. TKinDC July 27th, 2007 at 9:32 pm

    ansky –

was that in Mad Max beyong the Thunderdome?

    :)

  197. ansky July 27th, 2007 at 9:33 pm

it very well could have been. But i didnt see Tina Turner in the grandstand.

  198. ray July 27th, 2007 at 9:34 pm

Interesting to see all you guys criticizing Igawa for his last game who I agree has been a poor pitcher, but isn’t that ignoring the fact that Igawa’s performance really didn’t make any difference because the Yankees scored no runs.

  199. Rattachewy July 27th, 2007 at 9:36 pm

time to send Andy to AAA and bring Karstens up.

  200. TKinDC July 27th, 2007 at 9:36 pm

Nice job AP – — this is where we do some damage!

  201. mel July 27th, 2007 at 9:36 pm

    Base hit! WhooHoo!

  202. will July 27th, 2007 at 9:37 pm

it’s true, ray, if igawa had pitched like santana, it still wouldn’t have made a difference. we didn’t score at all. last night’s game was on the offense. they couldn’t score a single run. that being said, i’m glad igawa’s sent down. he’s pretty awful

  203. Cumberberg July 27th, 2007 at 9:40 pm

I’ll say this about Buck Martinez though, he always gives good props to my boy Jete.

  204. Reality Check July 27th, 2007 at 9:42 pm

    —-
    LOL

  205. ansky July 27th, 2007 at 9:42 pm

    cmon bobby…bring em home

  206. Cumberberg July 27th, 2007 at 9:44 pm

    well, now that sucked a$$.

  207. Rattachewy July 27th, 2007 at 9:44 pm

Just a repeat of last game against KC: the inability to get that clutch hit. Jeter is on vacation.

  208. TKinDC July 27th, 2007 at 9:45 pm

Jeter should have poked strike 3 out to right field instead of going for a walk – - – easy for me to say :)

  209. Cumberberg July 27th, 2007 at 9:46 pm

uh, reality check, better hit “refresh” on your browser. sox are up 7-1.

  210. ray July 27th, 2007 at 9:47 pm

Hey Reality Check….better check your score again. Boston is leading Tampa Bay 7-1…..so much for your Boston fade theory.

  211. We MIss Paulie July 27th, 2007 at 9:49 pm

    Boston WILL fade…they always do.

  212. ansky July 27th, 2007 at 9:50 pm

    nice….melky doesnt suffer from abreu-itis

  213. KAJ July 27th, 2007 at 9:51 pm

Yankees win 7-4,,,final score…I just came back from using my Time Machine…all is well…deep breaths….

  214. jennifer July 27th, 2007 at 9:51 pm

Well I should head out, need to finsh packing and head to bed. I’m exhausted have to get up early tomorrow. Catch everyone next week. Hey maybe I’ll catch Alex’s 500th homerun. :D

  215. Pepper Brooks July 27th, 2007 at 9:51 pm

C’mon Yanks… CAn’t believe they are losing to the Orioles….

  216. KAJ July 27th, 2007 at 9:52 pm

Rattachewy…go choke on some Negative Stew and take your crap outta this blog…I am POSITIVE that nobody wants to hear the garbage you spew !

  217. dontfirecash July 27th, 2007 at 10:01 pm

    hahah yeesssss!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  218. dontfirecash July 27th, 2007 at 10:02 pm

woww, I cannot even believe the yanks are in this game. It looked like they were sleepwalking through this one.

  219. Cumberberg July 27th, 2007 at 10:02 pm

    come on, andy!!!!!

  220. TKinDC July 27th, 2007 at 10:03 pm

Cano he didn’t, YES HE DID!

(that is my nomination for Robbie’s HR call)

Comeon offense – step on it!

  221. Top Cat July 27th, 2007 at 10:03 pm

    Cano Can Do!!

  222. ansky July 27th, 2007 at 10:04 pm

damn you Andy…knock em in!! (trying tough love)

    …oh

  223. Top Cat July 27th, 2007 at 10:05 pm

    TKinDC-

a little modification: OooooooH! Cano, HEeeee DID!!

  224. dontfirecash July 27th, 2007 at 10:05 pm

ahhh, I love Andy, but he’s gotta get the run in there.

  225. mel July 27th, 2007 at 10:06 pm

At least they got one back. Guthrie up to 101 pitches already. Let’s go Andy.

  226. mel July 27th, 2007 at 10:08 pm

    Double play, right here.

  227. BigYank1 July 27th, 2007 at 10:08 pm

Pettite doesn’t have his command tonight.

  228. mel July 27th, 2007 at 10:10 pm

    O.K., right here.

  229. Avenue A July 27th, 2007 at 10:11 pm

The Baltimore players are kinda ugly looking.

not to mention the fans, that guy isnt wearing a mask for fun.

    Just saying.

  230. BigYank1 July 27th, 2007 at 10:11 pm

    Throw STRIKES Andy.

  231. BigYank1 July 27th, 2007 at 10:12 pm

DP, we NEEDED that! Now lets knock Guthrie out of the game.

  232. Rattachewy July 27th, 2007 at 10:21 pm

Can you name an experience more painful than watching these Yanks trying to come back from a deficit in a game?

  233. ansky July 27th, 2007 at 10:22 pm

jete has been milking the evil teet of the offspeed pitch tonight.

  234. Bronx Born July 27th, 2007 at 10:23 pm

Rattachewy: yes I can.. reading your posts are more painful.

  235. KAJ July 27th, 2007 at 10:29 pm

Who is READY to take the lead now ???….Lemme hear ya !!!

  236. mel July 27th, 2007 at 10:29 pm

    Andy’s such a warrior.

  237. Chicago Dave July 27th, 2007 at 10:30 pm

Win or lose, you gotta give Andy some props for tonight’s performance. He had nothing, but he still managed to gut out 7 complete innings…Are you watching, Igawa?!

Andy has settled down and kept the Os quiet. Its about time for the offense to pick it up and shake off the cobwebs. I think its a perfect time for Arod to stop stalling and hit 500.

Can you name an experience more painful than watching these Yanks trying to come back from a deficit in a game?

    YES…reading YOUR Posts !!!

  240. TKinDC July 27th, 2007 at 10:31 pm

Andy has so much guts – he had nothing tonight and still outlasts Guthrie. Nice!

Now we need some stinkin runs!!!!

  241. Chicago Dave July 27th, 2007 at 10:32 pm

Ouch, now we’re going to see their best bullpen guys. Would be nice to pull this one out, regardless…

  242. Avenue A July 27th, 2007 at 10:32 pm

Alex sure has a fine booty.

  243. Jeff NJ July 27th, 2007 at 10:33 pm

Just got in, what’d I miss?

  244. ansky July 27th, 2007 at 10:33 pm

As good as their pen may be, are they having a “who can grow the best redneck mustache” contest?

  245. KAJ July 27th, 2007 at 10:33 pm

    yikes…bobby could have been rung up on that…watch him work a walk…then A-Rod blasts 500 !!!

  246. Ron Benbow July 27th, 2007 at 10:34 pm

Anyone out there notice how often AL pitcher are now throwing first pitch strikes to Abreu to get ahead of him in the count. He almost always takes that pitch.

I wonder if Abreu should start swinging on the first pitch more often than he does.

  247. Ron Benbow July 27th, 2007 at 10:35 pm

Damn, we’re going to lose this game. So many blown chances to score runs on outs against the Mormon.

  248. ray July 27th, 2007 at 10:36 pm

Nice clutch hitting by Arod! lol

  249. CaptainsCorner July 27th, 2007 at 10:37 pm

It looks like the Yanks are back to there slumps. This game shows exactly why they are awful in 1 run games, and cant get it done in the post season. A runner on 3, twice and they get 0 runs. All Jeter had to do is put the ball in play or just slap at the ball to get it to the right side and he swings at everything in sight then takes a pitch right down the middle. Phillips had an awful at bat with a runner on 3rd. Good teams get those runs in.

Cashman place find a taker for Abreu. When he is hot he is as hot as anyone and it lasts for a couple of games..then he gets cold for weeks at a time and cant even make contact. Plus we dont want the fire on the warning track to hurt him.

Arod please hit the homerun ASAP..because his at bats are going to awful until then. Unless he just takes the walks since they arent pitching to him.

  250. Ron Benbow July 27th, 2007 at 10:37 pm

Hey Pete, tell Abreu he needs to re-adjust to the new scouting report. I bet it says “throw him first pitch strikes to get ahead in the count; Abreu almost always takes a pitch, if not a strike.”

Abreu’s walk numbers are way down this season.

  251. Ron Benbow July 27th, 2007 at 10:40 pm

I like Abreu too much to advocate trading him. He’s a smart, disciplined hitter, plays hard, and doesn’t complain.

Let’s hope Trombley brings Baez in to close. The Yankees usually hit him.

How about pinch-hitting Shelley for Phillips?

  252. CaptainsCorner July 27th, 2007 at 10:40 pm

Does Posada know they are playing a game today? He looks like he could care less. Maybe Molina shouls play more to get Posada more rest.

  253. Bronx Born July 27th, 2007 at 10:40 pm

I think the guy who made up the Yankee schedule should be shot. These guys have not had a moment off in some time and they are playing like it.

  254. KAJ July 27th, 2007 at 10:40 pm

We can still win this game, BUT, I am getting pretty tired of us being down in the game, get a runner on who works a walk with 2 outs, only to have the very next batter swing at the first darn pitch and make out number 3. I think that anyone who does that the rest of the year should have to pay a $5000 fine if he indeed makes the out. IF he gets a hit, fine, but if you swing at the first pitch and make an out to end the inning, then you cough up the money….

  255. ansky July 27th, 2007 at 10:42 pm

Way to keep the game close. Jeez.

  258. KAJ July 27th, 2007 at 10:43 pm

Ok…I wrote that “positive” post before I saw that they put in Proctor…IMO, he stinks and lo and behold he gives up a Homer and gives them a huge insurance run…way to go Scotty,,,YOU ROCK !!!…I am leaving now…ADIOS !

  259. dontfirecash July 27th, 2007 at 10:43 pm

wow, I would trade Scott Proctor and Farnsworth for a bucket of balls.

  260. CaptainsCorner July 27th, 2007 at 10:43 pm

Here comes batting practice Proctor. Cashman trade him while you can…He has become 100% useless now. It is good to see everyone hitting him now especially Millar who doesnt hit anyone but the Yanks.

  261. Cumberberg July 27th, 2007 at 10:44 pm

KAJ — You said we were going to win 7-4. Well, the O’s had to get 4. Now, as for our 7…

  262. Rattachewy July 27th, 2007 at 10:44 pm

Kelvin Millar, Yankee Killer. I don’t know exactly what his stats are against the Yanks, but Cashman better sign him fast. How many games left against Baltimore?

  263. ansky July 27th, 2007 at 10:44 pm

Thanks Ave A. I knew there had to be some method to the madness.

  264. Chag July 27th, 2007 at 10:45 pm

Nice job in trying to keep us in the game Scott…your a bum!

  265. hello?offense? July 27th, 2007 at 10:45 pm

I’ve told you guys a million times…this is not a playoff team. This is a gutless team that gives up when they get behind. Now they can pour it on with the best of them when they get a lead, though!

All you “optimists” are looking like total idiots.

And all you idiots who said Boston would fold should watch their games.

Nice game tonight! They don’t even look like they care about a playoff spot. lol

  266. CaptainsCorner July 27th, 2007 at 10:46 pm

Proctors arm is absolutely shot. Would Torre like his I killed another arm certificate now? What is he throwing 60 mph?

  267. ray July 27th, 2007 at 10:48 pm

Everyone talks about how good Pettite is but the fact remains that unless the Yankees turn this game around Pettite won’t even have a winning record. And Bronx quit your whining about the Yankees schedule as if that is why you guys are losing….it’s no tougher than anyone elses.

  268. dontfirecash July 27th, 2007 at 10:48 pm

Oh well, Yanks just gotta win the next two games and they’ll be fin.

  269. Chag July 27th, 2007 at 10:48 pm

How many certificates do you think he has on the wall? (Proctor, Quantrill, ??)

  270. hello?offense? July 27th, 2007 at 10:49 pm

    Playoffs? LOL!

THIS is what you call a good offense?!?!?!?!

  271. dontfirecash July 27th, 2007 at 10:49 pm

    Hey Ray,
Why don’t you do some research before you post. The Yanks played the toughest schedule in baseball in the first half. And wins is a rather weak measure of a pitcher’s performance.

  272. hello?offense? July 27th, 2007 at 10:51 pm

“Oh well, Yanks just gotta win the next two games and they’ll be fin”

sure, they will, dumbsh**. keep treading water and they don’t make the playoffs. you guys sure are stupid. Boston is NOT collapsing…neither is cleveland. The yanks will have to earn a playoff spot, which they are simply not capable of doing.

  273. Bronx Born July 27th, 2007 at 10:51 pm

ohhhh ray you are one scary dude… like your opinion is the most important here… wow you must be one smart fella… but you know what they say about opinions.

  274. TKinDC July 27th, 2007 at 10:52 pm

wow – all of the trolls have come out of their caves! What a treat. The Yanks have won the last 3 or 4 series, are at least 8-3 over the past 11, are 4 games out of the WC.

These chuckleheads have no clue. Ignore them.

  275. Paul July 27th, 2007 at 10:52 pm

    Yep, these games are meaningless.

    I told you so.

  276. dontfirecash July 27th, 2007 at 10:52 pm

    Hello offense,
Could you find something else to do with your time? You must be a really cool dude to post insults on a yankee blog. And if the Yanks keep playing .750 baseball, they will be fine.

  277. Stuart July 27th, 2007 at 10:53 pm

proctors are is not shot.. newsflash fastballs knee high down the middle get hit…

And fading, my friend. I told you before that the offense is not consistant enough to make a sustained playoff push. Enjoy this disgraceful, gutless display of baseball the Yanks are blessing us with!

  280. ansky July 27th, 2007 at 10:55 pm

keep in mind guys, its absurdly easy to be a detractor fortune teller and melt into the background when it doesnt come true. Thats h?o?’s, or HO as i call him, forte.

  281. hello?offense? July 27th, 2007 at 10:56 pm

Fine…sure, they’re fine! Being blown out of the division race is fine! Being 5 games out of the WC is fine! This is a FINE season!

And this is a mighty FINE game tonight? A mighty fine display of gutlessness and giving up. FINE!

  282. Cumberberg July 27th, 2007 at 10:56 pm

TK — Maybe all the trolls were at a troll meeting for the first half of the game. Sure was more pleasant around here back then…

  283. ansky July 27th, 2007 at 10:57 pm

really? was Cano out? That looked way too close

  284. CaptainsCorner July 27th, 2007 at 10:58 pm

Melky you are allowed to take a pitch…How pathetic…

  285. hello?offense? July 27th, 2007 at 10:58 pm

“keep in mind guys, its absurdly easy to be a detractor fortune teller”

it must not be that easy, or else many others here would see what is right before them on the TV…a gutless ballclub that is not playoff caliber.

can’t wait for that thrilling comeback tonight!

  286. dontfirecash July 27th, 2007 at 10:58 pm

there are 59 games left. If the Yanks play .750 baseball over those 59 games(which may or may not be possible) they will finish with roughly 100 wins. So if you want to say that playing .750 baseball will amount to nothing, go ahead. You are an idiot for saying that however.

  287. ansky July 27th, 2007 at 10:59 pm

nah Cumberberg. They waited til Millar tacked on an insurance run to act like d*ucheb*gs. its much easier to act high and mighty that way.

  288. brian July 27th, 2007 at 10:59 pm

KAJ is dead on-how may first ptches are they gonna swing at? The season is getting late. Abreau just sucks-I couldn’t understand why philly fans were down on him but now I know-get rid of him-NOW!

  289. hello?offense? July 27th, 2007 at 10:59 pm

LOL LOL LOL Blame the umps!

You guys/gals are just as pathetic as the Yanks themselves.

Say bye bye to any chance at catching Boston!

  290. Bronx Born July 27th, 2007 at 11:00 pm

You gotta hand it to Phillips he has done quite a job since getting back into the lineup. He’s batting 311 now.

  291. Cumberberg July 27th, 2007 at 11:00 pm

well, that’s too bad. we’ll get ‘em tomorrow. see y’all.

That was the best O’s pitcher we’ll face in the series. We’ll win the rest of ‘em and put the trolls to shame.

Goodnight all fans! Trolls, I hope you have nightmares of the previous 26 WS championships and can’t sleep a wink.

  299. brian July 27th, 2007 at 11:05 pm

BAck to slumping-I’ve been with this team thru the lean years-now we have to win the next 2 games. They just look tired. No excuse for procter-arod needs to hit this hr just to get it out of the way. And posda-the curse of neieves-need to get mollina involved. Amd Kay needs to stfu

  300. hello?offense? July 27th, 2007 at 11:05 pm

LOL! Enjoy the past, my friend, since the present is a disaster of Kei Igawa-ish preportions.

  301. ray July 27th, 2007 at 11:05 pm

wow, you are seriously pathetic. Good night.

  303. dontfirecash July 27th, 2007 at 11:07 pm

    Hey Ray,
You must really know a lot about baseball. I like how you judge pitchers by the number of wins they have. Show’s that you have a deep understadning of the game.

  304. myrtlebeachfan July 27th, 2007 at 11:11 pm

Cant win all of them, guys.

    Lighten up

  305. CaptainsCorner July 27th, 2007 at 11:12 pm

It isnt a troll when people are just stating the obvious. It doesnt take a genius to know why this team is where they are. They are awful in one run games for a reason. The offense as a whole has been terribly inconsistent. A simple thing as getting a runner in from 3rd they NEVER do. They either score 10 runs or 2, there is no middle ground for them. When they arent scoring 10 runs they dont have patience and work the count like they used to. You cant have a great lineup when you you cant count on anyone except Arod, Jeter and Posada. Also the rotation for the most part has been great, but the bullpen is a disaster.

  306. mel July 27th, 2007 at 11:13 pm

Well that’s that. Two of the hottest teams playing each other and they came up short. I think all the bad porn ‘staches threw them off.

Bad 3rd inning, but, really, Andy battled to keep them in the game and it was totally winnable. Although, imo that ump sure had crooked eyes and we got burned by bad calls on the bases.

Cue HO? and Ray. Go ahead and gloat and tell me to stop whining. Too late. I just did. I assume we’ll see you here tomorrow? Also, Ray, you can stop pretending that you come here for some intellectal discourse because “you’re a baseball fan and you have the utmost respect for the Yankees”. You showed your true colors tonight.

  307. ray July 27th, 2007 at 11:13 pm

    Cash,
I do appreciate the fact that the number of wins a pitcher has does not constitute the whole story of how good a pitcher is doing. At the same time it is one valid indicator. I understand that ERA and many other things are important considerations. Even as a Sox fan I’ve always thought Pettite is a very good pitcher, but I just think he lost a little of his effectiveness at least this season.

  308. Joba Chamberlain July 27th, 2007 at 11:18 pm

Any time you need me to save the season let me know?

  309. We MIss Paulie July 27th, 2007 at 11:21 pm

God, it amazing how the pessimists come out when we have just ONE flat game. Amazing. Weren’t you the same people who were excited just a day ago? Now the sky is falling. Idiots.

Playing .750 is fine..we win tomorrow and Sunday.

  310. ray July 27th, 2007 at 11:21 pm

    Mel,
You are right, I got a little carried away tonight.

  311. Frosted Flakes July 28th, 2007 at 12:00 am

hey, this place can be just like a sports bar (fighting and arguing), and that’s not bad, IMO.

  312. mel July 28th, 2007 at 12:13 am

    ray,

Are you for real? If so, then it’s all good. lol.

  313. E-ROC July 28th, 2007 at 12:28 am

Looks like Guthrie was tough tonight. We finally got a nice outing from Pettite again. Proctor’s trade value is dropping. Cash needs to hurry with a trade already. At least we won that suspended game.

  314. KAJ July 28th, 2007 at 12:49 am

hello?offense? and Paul have to be the sorries humans on the face of the planet. When the season is over and their team is done, WHEN we are playing on, they will be crying and meeting each other at recess to discuss the next time they can go on the opposing teams blog and taunt the fans. They can call us all names and say the same stupid infantile things over and over but none of it will matter. Boston and Cleveland BOTH are in our sights and no amount of temper tantrums will be able to save them. Good night loser Red Sox fans, good night kiddies !

  315. KAJ July 28th, 2007 at 12:53 am

We MIss Paulie…you have it 100% right….say goodnight to the trolls that only come out on the nights the Yankees have a bad game. It’s too bad I don’t have the time NOR the stupidity to go to the Red Sox blog and do the same to them….and I never would….Red Sox Trolls always prove a fact of life….Most Boston Fans and players have absolutely NO CLASS…in victory AND in defeat, they are forever the doormat that the Yankees step on. and ONE measly championship in the last 85 years won’t change ANY of that…
