Pregame chatter: Joe Torre said it would not, “be the worst thing” if the Yankees didn’t make a trade. He said that Andy Phillips is playing 1B well and they have candidates within the organization to help the bullpen. … Hideki Matsui has hit safely in 22 of the last 23 games. The one game when he didn’t have a hit was July 20. In that game, he reached base in the ninth inning on a play that was ruled an error. Matsui popped to right field and Tampa second baseman Josh Wilson went back on the ball and had it tick off his glove. The Yankees tried to get the call overturned to no avail. “Maybe it could have been a hit,” Matsui said. “But it did go off his glove. It’s hard to say.” I kidded Matsui that Joe DiMaggio’s record was safe. “It was anyway,” he said in English. “Believe me.”

UPDATE, 7:14 p.m.: In a trade of two players the Yankees were interested in, the Devil Rays sent IF Ty Wigginton to Houston for RHP Dan Wheeler. I’m not sure the point of such a deal, but there you have it.

Perhaps the Yankees can make a deal with Houston for Wigginton and Chad Qualls.

1033.jpegUPDATE, 8:07 p.m.: Jason Giambi was 0 for 2 with two walks and a strikeout for Class A Tampa.

Here’s the Big G in his Tampa Yankees hat. He doesn’t look too thrilled to be there.

Giambi hit third for Tampa against Fort Myers. There is a doubleheader tonight but no word yet on whether he is playing in the nightcap.

UPDATE, 8:30 p.m.: Giambi is playing in Game 2. What an iron man.

UPDATE, 8:41 p.m.: Jeter is 0 for his last 10 with four strikeouts. A-Rod is 0 for 8 since homer No. 499.
