"Dice-K looks fantastic tonight. Theo does deserve tons of credit for signing him and Okajima. Cashman did nothing to help his team, however."

**IDIOT PATROL** Blaming Cashman for letting Theo nab Matsuzaka is asinine, because the bid from Boston was $50 million+. That's way more than anyone in baseball, and surely you, would have predicted, and still launches Matsuzaka's annual value to way more than he's worth. This sort of hindsight you're applying involves revisionist history and is completely bogus. You should probably throw your computer away.

Family Day was after the game? That's good. Having it before the game is like fans watching players eat dinner. Who cares?

If we had Mats I think we'd be the division leaders right now. We wouldn't have had that parade of prospects (4xhr wright) giving us some stability in the starting rotation during the first half of the year. Cashman blew that one.

Would the Yanks have won the division if they had him?

One small flaw in the above math: If the Yanks lose Sept. 30 and the Sox win that day, it's likely the Sox would win the tiebreaker... so the Yankees would need to gain a leeeeettle bit more than a game a week for the above to work properly.

Peter,

Boston just took a 2-1 lead on Seattle. Let's say, for the sake of the following analysis, that Boston wins tonight*.

All the Yanks have to do is play one game better than the Red Sox for every week remaining on the regular season schedule, and the Yanks will win the AL East. No, it's not easy, per se, but it is doable.

Observe, noting that Sept. 30 is the last day of the regular season:

Aug. 4: 7-game Boston lead*
Aug. 11: 6-game Boston lead
Aug. 18: 5-game Boston lead
Aug. 25: 4-game Boston lead
Sept. 1: 3-game Boston lead
Sept. 8: 2-game Boston lead
Sept. 15: 1-game Boston lead
Sept. 22: Boston/Yankees tied
Sept. 29: 1-game Yankees lead
