Chamberlain passes final test?

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Aug 05, 2007 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Joba Chamberlain pitched in relief for the third time tonight, going two innings against Buffalo.

Here’s how MinorLeagueBaseball.com recorded it:

Buffalo Top 7th
Pitcher Change: Joba Chamberlain replaces Steven White.
Mike Rose strikes out swinging.
Trent Durrington singles on a line drive to left fielder Kevin Reese.
With Yamid Haad batting, Trent Durrington caught stealing 2nd base, catcher Wil Nieves to shortstop Alberto Gonzalez.
Yamid Haad strikes out swinging.

Buffalo Top 8th
Joe Inglett strikes out swinging.
Asdrubal Cabrera strikes out swinging.
Ben Francisco strikes out swinging.

In three relief outings, Chamberlain has pitched four innings. He has allowed 1 hit, 0 runs, 0 walks and struck out 10. That’s 12 batters faced, 10 struck out. Chad Jennings reports that Chamberlain was steady at 97 and hit 99 last night.

I’m not sure what he has to do at this point. Juggle chainsaws? Take a drive with Lindsay Lohan? I’d be surprised if Chamberlain wasn’t with the Yankees on Monday.

Jason Giambi was the DH for Scanton and was 0 for 3 with a walk. The Big G is 5 of 19 with one homer, two RBI, eight walks and six strikeouts in eight minor league games.

I’d say we’re getting pretty close to the point of Giambi having to get called up. Veteran players making $21 million can only sit in the minors for so long. What happens then is anybody’s guess

Peter: Is there ANY chance we get rid of Farnsworthless? Waiver, DFA, minors? I would be shocked if ANY baseball person believed that he can actually HELP the Yanks.

  2. Gamera August 5th, 2007 at 12:35 am

Boston leads 4-2 after 7 innings.

    Dice-K with 10 strikeouts.

  3. Marius August 5th, 2007 at 12:37 am

Obviously Karstens goes back down when Joba comes up unless Myers gets the ole DFA which seems improbable.

With Giambi there is only one solution and it isn’t that great of a solution. Shelley Duncan goes back down till September.
I don’t see Cairo getting DFA’d as he doesn’t deserve it. He hits and he fields well. Would be silly to let him go.
It was nice having Shelley here and I can’t wait till he is always here with us. The dugout is just so different with Cano, Melky, Phillips and Shelley. Such a nicer atmosphere with life in it.

  4. Gamera August 5th, 2007 at 12:37 am

    Pete,

Does any reporter (including yourself) actually grill Torre on his use of Vizcaino in these blowout games? The NY media is so soft on Clueless Joe it makes me sick.

  5. Peter Abraham August 5th, 2007 at 12:44 am

Iowa Boy: You don’t release a player with $7 million left on his contract.

Gamera: Today was not the day to ask about using a reliever in a game they won 16-8. In case you missed it, A-Rod hit hit 500th homer.

We ask Joe those kind of questions all the time. He gives his reason and we write them down. What are we supposed to do then, throw something at him? It is what it is.

  6. IowaBoy August 5th, 2007 at 12:47 am

Igawa is owned over $7M. We sent him down to the minors. Why not Farnsworthless?

  7. IowaBoy August 5th, 2007 at 12:48 am

    er.. “owed” over $7M. Sorry.

  8. John L August 5th, 2007 at 12:49 am

IowaBoy, Farnsworth has no options. He can not be sent to the minors without his consent; he would have to pass through waivers then accept the assignment. And, you’d still have to pay him his full contract. Igawa, as technically a rookie, has options, and can just be sent down.

  9. Stephen August 5th, 2007 at 12:51 am

I vote Cairo. I like him a lot, but it seems that Betemit fills Cairo’s role as all-purpose infielder, and has a career pinch-hitting average of close to .350. I’d rather lose him than Duncan, but I’m sure Torre like how Cairo “does the little things” and “has been there before.” Grrrr.

  10. DKA August 5th, 2007 at 12:52 am

I think Cairo has to get DFAed here. We have a better, younger player in his role with Wilson Benemit. I loved Cairo back when he was our starting 2nd baseman for a season, but he is what he is and his usefulness on this team has run out.

Maybe Arizona will put a waiver claim on Farnsworth. They’ve claimed everyone else in the past day. Why not him?

Hopefully, Karstens develops into a nice long man, as that may be his ceiling for what role he can play on a good major league team.

  11. trapper700 August 5th, 2007 at 12:57 am

just nitpicking, but wouldn’t it be 12 batters faced, because his appearance the other day he had two strikeouts and a groundout?

  12. Lance August 5th, 2007 at 12:57 am

gagne struggled tonight for the sox…gave up a run and nearly coughed up the lead, but was able to strand runners at second and third

  13. KAJ August 5th, 2007 at 12:57 am

Gagne trying his best to show Yankees that it was a good move NOT to get him….Comes in the 8th up 4-2…gives up a run on 3 hits and only by the Grace of Bettencourt does he ONLY do that crappy. I, for one, am very glad Cashman did not take that stupid deal that Texas tried to get us to fall for AND the Yankees will eat Gagne alive when they face him….NOT the Gagne of old folks,,,not even close !

  14. Gamera August 5th, 2007 at 1:00 am

What’s the fascination with Jeff Karstens? He blew chunks in his “long man” role vs Chicago and he’s basically the same pitcher as DeSalvo, Rasner and Clippard…none of them are worthy of being in the bigs, imo.

  15. Ben August 5th, 2007 at 1:01 am

I don’t think there’s any point to DFA-ing Cairo. At the end of the month, when the rosters expand, we can call Duncan back up. HOWEVER, I would not necessarily call Giambi up right now. I mean, I know he’s making $21 million, and seems relatively healthy, but why clear roster space for him until we are certain he is back?? He has hit one HR. In theory, if he wants to hit ML pitching, he should be crushing Minor League pitching, especially if he is “Jason Giambi.” Why bring him back up until he is mashing? (And by that, I mean, he’s not mashing right now. He’s just “healthy” and able to swing and run without impediment. But, he’s not killing the ball, or anything.)

  16. Gamera August 5th, 2007 at 1:03 am

    KAJ,

The difference between Gagne and the Yankee set-up guys is that he didn’t allow that tying or winning run to score. Nobody in the Yankee bullpen gets that last out except Mo.

  17. mel August 5th, 2007 at 1:05 am

HaHa. The pitcher who coughed up #755 served a suspension for steroids in the minors. Bud looked like a ‘tard standing there looking around with drool on his chin.

  18. Gamera August 5th, 2007 at 1:05 am

Great game between Boston and Seattle tonight (Sox lead 4-3 bottom of the 9th). These are the kinds of close games that the Yanks don’t win.

  19. Gamera August 5th, 2007 at 1:09 am

    Wow, did Papelbon dominate Ichiro…

  20. mel August 5th, 2007 at 1:09 am

You guys ever have kids that you don’t know come up to you and start talking to you? And they won’t leave you alone no matter how polite you are to them. It’s kind of sad and pathetic how they try to get your attention…

  21. Ben August 5th, 2007 at 1:10 am

Gamera, Gagne is a good pitcher, and I don’t have any evidence of his use of PED’s, but check his past performance level, his curious injury history, and his current performance level, then draw your own conclusion.

I am in the camp of people who thought/may still think that Melky is a 4th OF, though he is starting to change my mind, as he continues to improve. He’s a 4th OF right now, maybe better. If he improves as much next year as he improved this year, he is a legitimate CF for a major-market team, like the Yankees. He’s still so young, and making big jumps each of the last two years. You’d be foolish to write him off before you were sure he had peaked.

Anyway, back to my point, giving up a legitimate player, like Melky (as opposed to giving up either of the two Kevin’s, for example) for two months of a Gagne rental, would be silly. Cash did the right thing. (And I’m not even addressing sending Joba, Kennedy or Horne to Texas for Gagne.)

  22. CaptainsCorner August 5th, 2007 at 1:12 am

When Giambi and Chamberlain come up Cairo and Myers should be the ones to go. With Betemit on the roster the Yanks do not need Cairo. Duncan has been playing good so far and he is a good person to have in the lineup when they face a lefty. Especially since Damon and Abreu do not hit lefties for the most part. Myers has been consistent all season…consistently awful. There is no reason to have him on the roster considering he never gets anyone out and then they have to bring in a new pitcher with someone on base. Karstens should also be sent down and they should give Ramirez a REAL chance.

But knowing Torre he will probably keep Cairo and send down Duncan and then tell him that they will bring him up in Sept.

  23. Gamera August 5th, 2007 at 1:20 am

IMO, the Yanks can’t even think about Boston. The Red Sox just do not beat themselves or give games away like NY did against the White Sox with Cano’s flub, Torre’s use of Farnsy, etc.

Boston just seems more “mentally tough” than NY this season.

BTW, Papelbon closes it out and Boston beats Seattle 4-3, which is probably better for the Yanks.

  24. Gamera August 5th, 2007 at 1:24 am

“But knowing Torre he will probably keep Cairo and send down Duncan and then tell him that they will bring him up in Sept.”

If that’s true, then Torre is not giving his team the best chance to win, plain and simple.

  25. Mike August 5th, 2007 at 1:25 am

Karstens should go down for Chamberlain, Cairo for Giambi. There is not ONE logical reason to keep Cairo on this roster. Betemit can play every infield position and actually helps the team with his bat as well. Phillips can also play 3B, 2B along with 1B. What do we need Cairo for? It’s a waste of a roster spot. Duncan can actually help this team. When is the last time we had a REAL power threat off the bench? Duncan is exactly that. He can be to this team what Strawberry was to the 98 team or what Glenallen Hill was to the 2000 team. I also like him getting some starts against lefties if Joe wants to sit Damon, Abreu or Giambi. The everyday lineup when Giambi comes back should look like this:

    CF Cabrera
    SS Jeter
    RF Abreu
    3B ARod
    LF Matsui
    C Posada
    DH Giambi
    2B Cano
    1B Betemit/Phillips

Your bench is Damon, Duncan, Betemit and Molina. Joe has alot of flexibility with that bench. Damon can play 3 different OF positions and 1B, Duncan can play 1B and RF and Betemit of course can play every IF position and RF in a pinch.

  26. MK August 5th, 2007 at 1:26 am

“Boston just seems more “mentally toughâ€? than NY this season.”

    You’re an idiot.

  27. John L August 5th, 2007 at 1:27 am

Torre is not the decision-maker on who stays and goes. Cashman consults him, sure, but he is the one who makes the decisions.

  28. Gamera August 5th, 2007 at 1:36 am

““Boston just seems more “mentally toughâ€? than NY this season.â€?

    You’re an idiot.”

    Boston’s record in 1-run games 17-16
    NY’s record in 1-run games 9-15

  29. Viper August 5th, 2007 at 1:39 am

Mental toughness has nothing to do with their records in 1-run games.

  30. Chamberlain August 5th, 2007 at 1:43 am

Ill trade the “Mental toughness” Farthworthless has for some decent outings.

  31. Mehdi August 5th, 2007 at 1:45 am

So Gamera all that means is that Boston has lost one more close game than the Yankees and that the Yankees have been beating the hell out of people that we haven’t been in more one run games.

  32. JFud25 August 5th, 2007 at 1:47 am

Arizona released Russ Ortiz last year when they still owed him $22 million. They aren’t even in the same financial stratosphere as the Yanks. I’m not saying the Yankees should release ‘Worthless, but it wouldn’t be close to the biggest amount of money eaten by a team.

  33. susan mullen August 5th, 2007 at 1:54 am

With a 1 run lead in the bottom of the 9th, the pitcher gives up 2 bases on balls tonight. This kind of performance would have the press writing eulogies, giving him half a page on ESPN hanging his head in shame, that he was done, etc. if he were a certain Yankee. Being that he gave up 2 walks for the Red Sox(following his rotund team mate who gave up 3 hits and an earned run in the 8th) he’s still a genius, a miracle, etc.

  34. KAJ August 5th, 2007 at 2:02 am

I smell a troll that we are to ignore…I no longer recognize the existence of said persons….Yankees only 1.5 games out of the Wild Card…SWEET !…I am so ready for the continued success of our beloved Yankees and the inescapable colapse of the BoSux…( going down in history blowing a 14.5 game division lead will be another nice lead weight for them to hang around their collective neck ! )

  35. KAJ August 5th, 2007 at 2:03 am

susan mullen…Yankee Haters are everywhere and it will be a pleasure to serve them a nice sh*t sandwich to munch on this year when we shock the world and win it ALL !

  36. susan mullen August 5th, 2007 at 2:23 am

So-called Yankee hating became acceptable in part because many thought it was part of being a Yankee fan. Enough being Mr. Nice Guy, these people have put a negative spin on too much and can be stopped just as they started.

  37. KAJ August 5th, 2007 at 2:24 am

Starting with the game on 6/28, the Yankees are AVERAGING 7.2 runs per game,,,, for 35 games they have kept this up and the offense is actually doing even better than that lately. During that stretch, we have gone 24-11. Who says offense means little ? At minimum, we keep up the 35 game pace and do no better, we finish at 96-66,,,I’ll bet that wins the division…Boston will be lucky to play .500 ball for the next 52 games, so the best they can hope for is 93-69, 3 games back and most likely NOT good enough for the Wild Card….Papelbon and Gagne showed tonight that they are NOT the “answer” in Boston….let the CRUMBLE Begin !!!( check my Crystal Ball’s prediction after we finish game 162…Yankee Fans will be VERY Happy ! )

    WHO WOULD HAVE KNOWN??

    http://www.time.com/time/asia/.....atsui.html

Cynics call Matsui simpleminded, a workhorse without the brainpower to comprehend what all the attention really means. But Matsui responds by saying that he just wants to be a regular guy—albeit one who jokes that he now has five girlfriends at any one time. He drives a Chevy. He eats steak, has an occasional beer and likes to shoot the breeze with the security guards and maintenance personnel. And, of course, he likes to watch his much vaunted porno collection, tapes that he often trades with Japanese reporters. As one Japanese journalist put it, describing Matsui’s affinity for such unique Japanese cultural institutions like the no-panties shabu-shabu in Japan, “Matsui is a horny guy. All of us are horny, more or less. But Matsui doesn’t attempt to hide the fact.” Yet another win for the Japanese Everyman.

  39. Taylor August 5th, 2007 at 2:35 am

I’m worried with Chamberlain being in a bullpen managed by Clueless Joe.

  40. E-ROC August 5th, 2007 at 2:42 am

LMAO!! This is the worst stat line I’ve EVER seen.

IP H ER BB K HR NP-ST ERA WHIP
    .2 8 11 3 0 2 39-21 148.50 16.50

It’s Jason Jennings’ line from last Sunday. I didn’t know it was that bad.

This link also has some quotes from Ozzie Guillen. They are hilarious

  41. Stuart August 5th, 2007 at 2:48 am

Cairo has no value and his contract is up at the end of the yr..

keep him aroubd, why someone else want him???

    No chance…… adios……..

  42. E-ROC August 5th, 2007 at 2:56 am

I don’t want Giambi either, but we have no choice. We can’t leave $21 million in the minors. Cairo and Myers might be gone.

  43. Joey_V August 5th, 2007 at 3:39 am

Chamberlain does pass the final test. He throws “BBs”, “smoke”, “rocks” and plainly dominates. I wonder if once Mariano Rivera has a chance to spend time teaching him the art of close, that he’ll decide to become the next great Yankee closer. Rivera brought the art of close to a level that is equal to the best starters in baseball ever.

  44. Steve August 5th, 2007 at 3:50 am

The only slight problem with DFAing Cairo, is that there would be no decent pinch-runner for Posada, Cano, and Duncan.

But chances are that it will only be a problem for a couple weeks considering Justin Christian, Kevin Thompson or Brett Gardner will be up in September.

  45. Scooter10 August 5th, 2007 at 3:53 am

Cairo should be DFAed. Nothing personal. His role has been replaced by Betemit. And we have depth on the 40 man roster should we need it – Basak and Gonzalez.

  46. Scooter10 August 5th, 2007 at 3:54 am

Not sure about Christian and Garnder but Thompson will definately be up on Sept 1. I would expect Basak and Gonzalez as well. Plenty of pinch runners.

  47. E-ROC August 5th, 2007 at 4:08 am

Brett Gardener will definitely be up in September. I hope he shows that patience at the plate as he did in the minors.

  48. Kevin August 5th, 2007 at 9:44 am

Ideally, Giambi and Joba get called up within the week, Cairo gets DFAed and Farnsworth gets traded anywhere and Damon and his .706 OPS takes a seat on the bench. Of course, ideally we only carry 11 pitchers and Joe uses them for more than one inning sometimes, but let’s not go too crazy here.

Posada-Phillips/Duncan-Cano-Jeter-Rodriguez-Matsui-Melky-Abreu-Giambi (DH) with Damon, Betemit and Molina also off the bench sounds pretty sweet to me.

    You’ve got the on-paper murderer’s row of Wang-Pettite-Clemens-Hughes-Mussina.

    You’d then have a bullpen of Rivera-Vizcaino-Joba-Villone-Myers-Bruney-Karstens.

If Joba’s for real, I don’t see how that’s not the best team in the AL at this moment.

  49. DKA August 5th, 2007 at 9:46 am

Steve: I think we should expect that our hitters can do their own baserunning, however long it might take them at times. *coughmolinacough* keeping a guy who, now, rots on the bench over a guy in a platoon mix swinging a hot bat is silly.

    Gamera: what’s Boston’s record in 15-run blowouts? ;)

  50. Rodney August 5th, 2007 at 10:59 am

I think there is a strong possibility that Damon gets traded by the end of August. He will clear waivers most definetly and this will allow Melky to remain in CF and Giambi to DH.

  51. Keith August 5th, 2007 at 11:06 am

If Farnsworth clears waivers we should just release him and be done with it…he will never be able to be trusted even if he turns it around and has a few 1-2-3- innings in a row (which I doubt)…he is just taking up space…..forget the money (easy for me to say :) and move on and bring up Jaba and see what we got…and Miguel Cairo needs to go, not Duncan, his bat is too valuable against lefties, 1 of our weaknesses all year, lefty pitchers……finally I know its easy to second guess and I have wanted Torre fired and wanted Pinella or Bobby Valentine to manage this team…but why is Vizcaino in a game with a 10 run lead, shouldn’t he rest for a closer game and why doesn’t someone in the organization take Torre to task for Sturtze, Quantrill, and Proctor overuse…its like a big joke around baseball by all writers about the overuse of these guys and yet Torre still does it…it just doesn’t make sense this beating up of relief pitchers….I read alot of different baseball columns and I have read about 15 different writers make jokes about this matter and Vizcaino pitching yesterday keeps the joke running, and running….

  52. Andy Hawkins August 5th, 2007 at 11:56 am

It’s easy to throw $7 million away when it’s not your money. They are not just dumping a guy who makes good money and has, in theory, good stuff. Even if that guy is Kyle Farnsworth. I don’t see why that’s so hard to understand. And really, has he been less effective than Myers has been? I don’t think so. The sad state of the Yankees bullpen currently is that Farnsworth is not their least effective reliever.

Just for the record, the radar gun at PNC Field in Scranton is a little on the slow side. If Joba sat at 97, he probably was more like 98 or 99.

  53. Miguel August 5th, 2007 at 12:47 pm

“What are we supposed to do then, throw something at him?”–LOL

“Does any reporter (including yourself) actually grill Torre on his use of Vizcaino in these blowout games? The NY media is so soft on Clueless Joe it makes me sick.”

Peter, does reporter (including yourself) grill Joe about what his role was in keeping the team together during the very difficult stretches this season, or about how well they are playing now?

  54. alexT August 5th, 2007 at 1:51 pm

Mike Mussina is not going to give up any runs next inning. Just for you guys.

  55. brian August 5th, 2007 at 2:49 pm

Wow..Wil Nieves actually threw someone out!

  56. TITO August 5th, 2007 at 5:04 pm

What’s the deal with Edwar Ramirez? Why isn’t he ever mentioned when it comes to improving the bullpen? He didn’t get a fair shot last time he was here and all he’s done is go back down to Scranton and dominate.

  57. TITO August 5th, 2007 at 5:55 pm

Next Yankee manager should be Tony Pena!

  58. *Hughes Your Daddy?* August 6th, 2007 at 1:44 pm

I’m glad to see Will Nieves throw out a runner. I thought that was the real impressive thing in this post.
