There was quite a commotion on the field before the game when soccer superstar David Beckham showed up.

The Yankees, perhaps because they are such celebs themselves, are generally unimpressed by famous people. Shelley Duncan walked right over and shook Beckham’s hand as did Miguel Cairo and several other players.

Joe Torre talked to “Becks” for several minutes then invited him into the clubhouse. He posed for a bunch of photos.

“He has a very engaging personality,” Torre said. “He seemed like a very nice guy. He was very gracious to everybody.”

So in the last week, we’ve had Tyra Banks, Jon Bon Jovi and now Beckham around the team.

Alas, Bruce Springsteen and Diane Lane have been busy.

He’s a guest of the Blue Jays, but he’s hobnobbing with the Yankees. That’s not star power, that’s Yankee power.

  2. Limey Yankee August 6th, 2007 at 6:42 pm

Manchester United used to have a partnership with the Yankees. Apart form that i have no idea why injured LA Galaxy star David Beckham is in Toronto.

  3. Jonathon August 6th, 2007 at 6:46 pm

Hey Beckham…how’s that ‘converting United States sports fans to soccer’ thing coming along?

  4. Dano August 6th, 2007 at 6:51 pm

Ah, the Beckham Publicity Machine. Cranking into gear I see, despite the way-past-his-dubious-best David and his loathsome self-obsessed talentless wife probably having no clue what baseball is, other than it’s full of money and therefore something they need to get involved with.

Another fine export we have sent you. Enjoy, my American friends!

  5. Stuart August 6th, 2007 at 6:53 pm

the galaxy played toronto yesterday in soccer that is why beckham was there…

  6. Brian M August 6th, 2007 at 6:55 pm

He might have heard of ARod or Jeter, but I doubt he could pick them out of a lineup. And he wouldn’t know one end of a baseball from the other.

As Joe said though he is always respectful of people. He was England captain for a long time and that role is like being a politician. It means he can seem a bit bland and insincere though. Engaging? No. Gracious. Yes.

Most footballers, excuse me, soccer players are though. The press here would maul anyone like Sheffield or Randy Johnson.

  7. Brian M August 6th, 2007 at 6:56 pm

Stuart, he wanted to be on camera to boost his profile. Thats why he was there.

  8. Colin August 6th, 2007 at 7:05 pm

yeah, before today, i doubt he knew who joe torre was

  9. sunny615 August 6th, 2007 at 7:11 pm

I wonder who got who’s autograph? Did Beckham get Arod’s autograph or did Arod get Beckham’s autograph?

  10. Mehdi August 6th, 2007 at 7:13 pm

A Rod is an Arsenal fan. Beck is Man United. Red northern scum to be exact :)

  11. KAJ August 6th, 2007 at 7:16 pm

Tampa is demolishing Detroit….1-0, top of the 1st…

  12. Paolo August 6th, 2007 at 7:36 pm

Justin Verlander is getting worked up – 37 pitches in 2nd inning with one out…

  13. KAJ August 6th, 2007 at 7:39 pm

Tampa is now HULIATING ( LOL ! ) Detroit 1-1 in the 2nd by having a runner on first in a tie game ! SWEET !

  14. bbgate August 6th, 2007 at 7:40 pm

I would rather see Beckham on the mound than Farnsworth

  15. LCâ„¢ August 6th, 2007 at 7:48 pm

When was Bon Jovi around the team?

  16. reality August 6th, 2007 at 7:55 pm

i’d rather see helen keller on the mound than farnsworth at this point.

  17. kasey August 6th, 2007 at 7:59 pm

    from the previous thread:

great to see that joe has committed to using melky in CF the rest of the way. stuart, good call on that one.

i’ll be anxious to see who goes to make room for giambi, and when joba gets called up. i still think giambi is dead weight, but, pete made an excellent point about who you’d rather have as a late-game pinch-hitter. if they use him that way, he could be very effective.

  18. Jim Johnson August 6th, 2007 at 8:10 pm

    He’s dreamy.

  19. #9 August 6th, 2007 at 8:17 pm

When I was in England a couple of years ago a lot of younger people were wearing the NY Yankees hat…

    *Gazes into the future*

    Hmmmm sometime in 2035…

The Yorkshire Knights vs. The Oxford Grays in England’s Major League Baseball match – oops I mean game of the week…

  20. #9 August 6th, 2007 at 8:23 pm

Who’s that next to Jeter & ARod?

    http://www.tmz.com/2007/08/06/.....e-yankees/

  21. Jim Clark August 6th, 2007 at 8:25 pm

When is Andres Escobar going to come to a Yankee game? Oh wait, he can’t. He was murdered by soccer fans because he scored an own goal eliminating his team. Great game soccer. Great fans. Let’s hope it never becomes popular here.

  22. Ben August 6th, 2007 at 8:57 pm

Yes Jim Clark, because all soccer fans act like that. Just like all baseball fans act like Yankee fans did back in the 77 world series and send Reggie Willis into a neck brace for the rest of the series after he was hit by a bottle.

  23. Mehdi August 6th, 2007 at 9:14 pm

What a complete ignorant remark by Jim Clark. What a complete tw*t. Like any game soccer brings out alot of passion. Some times it goes too far. To generalize it like that shows how little you know.

  24. Khoa August 6th, 2007 at 9:24 pm

well, i guess when you’re riding pine, theres no place better to do it then at a yankee game.

  25. Khoa August 6th, 2007 at 9:28 pm

Speaking of Becks, while I’m not a big fan of him or Reggie Bush, this little viral vid is pretty entertaining. Becks looks like an idiot in pads. He makes Jeff Feagles look like Michael Strahan (pre Subway diet).

TB can’t hold a 3 run lead. oy.

  27. Khoa August 6th, 2007 at 9:35 pm

Well Sunny, they ARE Tampa Bay. Ha! it feels good to be back in conention for the playoffs though doesn’t it?

  28. sunny615 August 6th, 2007 at 9:35 pm

Good grief. Tampa Bay can’t buy an out.

  29. Jen August 6th, 2007 at 9:37 pm

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Beckham at the Stadium when the Galaxy make their trip to the Meadowlands next weekend.

  30. Khoa August 6th, 2007 at 9:37 pm

    i know. its pathetic.

  31. As I Lay Dying August 6th, 2007 at 9:38 pm

Just horrifying how bad the devil rays are when they are not playing against us.

  32. Mehdi August 6th, 2007 at 9:39 pm

Look guys Detroit wins or loses tonight it doesn’t matter. The Yankees are going to have to play as well as they have been playing these past few weeks. If they just keep on winning series then I have zero doubt we will be in the playoffs.

  33. Mehdi August 6th, 2007 at 9:42 pm

As I laying Down please don’t start that ‘why are the devil rays rolling over’. You sound like those cry babies over at Sons of Sam Horn.

  34. Mike August 6th, 2007 at 9:45 pm

I’m just happy Pettitte and Mussina are back on track.

I mean, Wang’s the only Yankee with double-digit wins (13), and Viz, a reliever, is still second with 8. At least now, Pettitte has 8 and the Moose has 7.

  35. blackaccord August 6th, 2007 at 10:04 pm

Though I’m an Arsenal fan, I like and respect Beckham as a player (sort of the way I liked and respected Nomar when he was with the sox)… One of the best Soccer players in England..

  36. YankeeJosh August 6th, 2007 at 10:07 pm

ESPN’s Baseball Tonight with Olney et al said Chamberlain is expected to be called up for tomorrow’s game and Karstens will likely be sent down. We’ll see how accurate that information is.

  37. Mehdi August 6th, 2007 at 10:08 pm

He was. That drunk scot Ferguson was wrong to let him go and it took him 4 years to win another title because of it. Anwyays Blackaccord it’s good to get another Gooner on here.
Can’t wait for sunday morning when we put 4 past Fulham!

  38. Joe from Long Island August 6th, 2007 at 10:09 pm

Buster Olney on ESPN is reporting that Joba Chamberlain is being called up tomorrow, and Jeff Karstens sent down. (I know, we’ve heard variations on this theme for a few days now.) No word on Giambi. One hopes that they’re working on a deal for the Krazy one.

  39. SJ44 August 6th, 2007 at 10:11 pm

He probably took it from Tyler Kepner, who is reporting that Chamberlain is on his way to Toronto.

  40. Khoa August 6th, 2007 at 10:13 pm

    Sweet. (Re: Joba)

  41. Joe from Long Island August 6th, 2007 at 10:15 pm

Well it’s nice to know that Joba is putting that passport to use.

  42. dontfirecash August 6th, 2007 at 10:16 pm

Joba can’t get here soon enough.

  43. randyhater August 6th, 2007 at 10:25 pm

Let’s hope Joe uses him immediately, and often, rather than icing him like he did Ramirez. Hopefully his throwing Brower right in today, in a tight spot no less, is a sign that Cash got his attention by dumping his boy Myers.

  44. Bleacher Creature August 6th, 2007 at 10:34 pm

I have to agree with Jim Clark. It is an abomination that a winning a game would be more important than human life. This was not an isolated incident. I have heard on the news several strange stories about soccer fans and I want no part of it. I love America, but it is already screwed up – it does not need one more unhealthy obsession.

  45. Mehdi August 6th, 2007 at 10:37 pm

Have you hear one bad thing happening at an MLS game? EVER? I’ve been to Red Sox and Yankee games and you can pick out probably 15 fights a game in the stands. I’ve been to games in England and never saw any problems, even though I know that they still have fights after the game throughout the town. It’s the number one sport in the WORLD, of course not everything is going to go peachy.

  46. Bleacher Creature August 6th, 2007 at 10:43 pm

Give me an example of a Red Sox or Yankees player being murdered for making an error that cost the game? Just because it is supposedly the number one sport in the world does not justify or minimize murder. Would you explain to the murder victim’s loved ones, “We’re sorry. Things just didn’t go peachy today”?

  47. Josh August 6th, 2007 at 10:45 pm

That’s great news about Joba. I’ll be at tomorrow night’s game against the Blue Jays, so hopefully he comes out of the pen for the 7th!

  48. Mehdi August 6th, 2007 at 11:08 pm

How do I know how many people have been murdered cause of a game. I know for sure a couple of years ago Some Dodger fans stabbed and killed a Giants fan in the parking lot in LA and just last week some nutso Mets fan killed his mom and dad cause the Mets lost the game. What I’m saying about it being the number one sport in the world is that there’s a much bigger pool for crazy to happen. It should not mean that it’s a bad sport that attracts crazies. If anything it’s just a reflection of society. Millions of fans go to watch these games without incident and the bad things that do happen shouldn’t scare people away from the game itself.

  49. #9 August 6th, 2007 at 11:11 pm

*Give me an example of a Red Sox or Yankees player being murdered for making an error that cost the game?*

    Hmmmmm…

Has anyone seen Bill Buckner since ’86??!!

  50. Mehdi August 6th, 2007 at 11:17 pm

The genius that is 38 pitches just tried to bare hand a come backer from Vladdy Daddy.

  51. Mehdi August 6th, 2007 at 11:25 pm

2-2 with one out. Methinks Schilling f’d up his finger.

  52. Mehdi August 6th, 2007 at 11:44 pm

O-Cab just made a ridiculous (but lucky) play to get Papi out. Still tied at 2 going to the bottom of the 5izfth, Fif FIFFF.

  53. Sean August 7th, 2007 at 12:22 am

Bleacher Creature, that actually WAS an isolated incident. Hundreds of thousands of soccer matches take place around the world each year. Regardless of what you’ve heard, murder is not part of the typical gameday experience.

Besides, the actions of a crazed fan has nothing to do with the sport itself. By that logic, you should want the NFL banned from America as well since in that sport it’s the actual participants that are committing the murders.

  54. KAJ August 7th, 2007 at 1:00 am

6 games back of the Dastardly BoSux with ONLY ( LOL !) 50 games to play….Those Red Sox have us HULIATED ! TOTALLY HULIATED !,,,,what will we ever do to catch up ???

  55. Jim Clark August 7th, 2007 at 9:09 am

If someone takes offense at what I said, doesn’t bother me. Just look up “football hooliganism” in wikipedia. Sure lots of fans are okay and soccer can be a good game to watch once in a while. I confess to watching Manchester United games the last two years because I quit watching the NBA, NHL and NFL years ago (last NBA: Jordan’s last championship. Last NFL: Rams vs Patriots super bowl, last NHL some Devils playoff game four years ago). The lack of commercials and cross-marketing in a FSC broadcast are a revelation. But in all the ESPN generated hype about Beckham, I won’t ignore the fact worldwide soccer has also brought death, injuries and destruction.

  56. Mehdi August 7th, 2007 at 10:28 am

Soccer has also brought peace and togetherness.
