A-Rod sore, Joba happy, Yanks win again

A-Rod has a sore left calf, the result of getting hit with the pitch. It seems like he will be OK.

Roger Clemens was still steamed after the game but wouldn’t get into why. Roger is so old-school, he felt like that once justice was done, he should have been allowed to keep pitching.

In pointless information you can’t get anywhere else, Joba Chamberlain returned to the clubhouse to find 27 missed calls and 41 new text messages. He is an interesting kid to talk to. Very composed and confident. I got the sense that Jorge Posada was a little miffed he shook him off. But it’s the pitcher who has to make the pitch, not the catcher.

Their physical talents aside, I have to give the Yankees credit for recognizing the makeup of Chamberlain and Phil Hughes. They’re going to handle New York pretty well based on early impressions.

Here is A-Rod on the incident:

Sorry for the technical problems before with the blog. Suffice it to say, when it comes to technology, I’m a good writer.

Clemens was jawing pretty hard at the umps when they tossed him. I wonder what he said? Guess we’ll never know. (I bet he told them to get their collective heads out of their asses! Good for him!!)

I’m very proud of this team tonight. They stood up for Arod. Posada with the hit right after Arod got hit, Clemens hitting Rios, heck even Duncan with his hard slide. Roger looked great, Joba looked promising, things look good. The Jays are a bunch of whiners, get over it already!

  3. Bob from NJ August 7th, 2007 at 11:43 pm

The A Rod audio doesn’t work. The Joba audio works perfectly.

  4. Howie August 7th, 2007 at 11:45 pm

so did the jays throw at arod for yelling “HAH!” earlier this season?

  5. Khoa August 7th, 2007 at 11:47 pm

“Suffice it to say, when it comes to technology, I’m a good writer.” Hilarious. Statement is proof of its truth…er…fulness. I am NOT a good writer.

Great night. I was at the game tonight. There were tons of Yankee fans in attendance tonight. I guess you can’t really beat the top price of 63.00 for a seat along the foul lines or 7.00 for the upper deck.

Crowd went crazy when A-Rod starting walking toward the mound. There were even more cheers when Roger plunked Rios in the 7th.

  7. Anthony CA August 7th, 2007 at 11:48 pm

I STILL want to know what Duncan’s slide was all about. Was it a DP ball that he was trying to break up, or what?

  8. Carmine August 7th, 2007 at 11:50 pm

A bad sac bunt by Melky and Duncan was making it a tough out. It was good fundamental baseball by Shelley.

  9. Josh August 7th, 2007 at 11:50 pm

    Anthony CA,

It would have been a close force out if Shelley didn’t break it up. He did a great job on getting his leg in the air to collide with MacDonald’s glove knocking it and the ball to the air.

  10. Tim TX August 7th, 2007 at 11:51 pm

Yeah it was a DP ball … Duncan slid in hard and broke it up … Gotta love the all around play tonight by everyone

  11. Josh August 7th, 2007 at 11:51 pm

Good news LAA is up 7-4 now!

  12. Josh August 7th, 2007 at 11:52 pm

It wasn’t a DP ball because it was a bunt.

  13. Rocco August 7th, 2007 at 11:52 pm

this was one of those season changing games… like the texas game last year…

if you dont know what i’m talking about you should leave this blog right now.

Yanks will win the division… i said this when they were 13 back.

  14. tonyb August 7th, 2007 at 11:53 pm

Duncan slid into second to break up a double play. He slid hard and very late and blew up the Jay that was covering the bag. No throw. A thing of beauty in a tense game.

  15. Josh August 7th, 2007 at 11:53 pm

The cheater finally got the home run.

  16. tonyb August 7th, 2007 at 11:54 pm

Correction – it was on a bunt.

  17. mel August 7th, 2007 at 11:54 pm

Barry finally did it. Now we can all move on.

  18. Josh August 7th, 2007 at 11:55 pm

Wow they actually stop the game and give a tribute.

  19. mel August 7th, 2007 at 11:56 pm

    Here comes the hate.

  20. Josh August 7th, 2007 at 11:56 pm

Wow I can’t believe Hank Aaron did the tribute video.

  21. Lori August 7th, 2007 at 11:56 pm

I can’t believe Hank Aaron gave in and was part of this nonsense.

  22. Josh August 7th, 2007 at 11:58 pm

    He should thank the steroids.

  23. mel August 7th, 2007 at 11:59 pm

Man, I can’t believe the Angels only got 5 out of that inning. They had men all over the bases. Angels up 7-4.

  24. Josh August 8th, 2007 at 12:00 am

Figgins had a great chance with the bases loaded but struck out on 3 pitches.

  25. Rebecca August 8th, 2007 at 12:01 am

Up 7-4 is better than down 7-4….

  26. Josh August 8th, 2007 at 12:02 am

The people surrounding where the ball landed went crazy for the ball. It just looked like a huge pile up of people scratching and clawing for that ball.

  27. EY August 8th, 2007 at 12:02 am

He should enjoy his steroids record while he still can, because you know 8~9 years later, Arod will set the new CLEAN record in pinstripes.

  28. Josh August 8th, 2007 at 12:03 am

Great play by Matthews and Cabrera, throwing Lowell out at home!! Still 7-4!

  29. Carmine August 8th, 2007 at 12:05 am

I’m a Bonds fan because Felix Heredia did steroids and he sucked. Congratulations to Barry.

  30. Anthony CA August 8th, 2007 at 12:09 am

Oh man… the fans around that ball must have gone absolutely berzerk. It will be worth so much money (for the next

  31. jew4jeter August 8th, 2007 at 12:11 am

Pete, For the past week there have been many reports that Edwar is being called up and then it doesn’t happen. Today’s Daily News said he would be called up by the end of this week… Is this speculation or is there solid info to indicate that his call-up is impending?
Edwar should be up on the major league roster (instead of Brower) and Joe should actually use him. In addition to the fact that he has dominated AAA, his changeup would provide a much different look compared to the stuff of Joba, Vizacaino and Mo.

  32. This Year August 8th, 2007 at 12:15 am

Jew4Jeter you are correct. The tandem of Joba and Edwar would be great> Let’s see if they do the ovious thing,.

  33. This Year August 8th, 2007 at 12:16 am

    obvious, that is.

  34. Dana August 8th, 2007 at 12:43 am

Pete – the AROD audio is not playing, keeps getting stuck on buffering.

  35. GW Plunkett August 8th, 2007 at 8:24 am

    Peter

I’m glad you mentioned that exchange between Posada and Joba. It looked like Joba shook Posada off three or four straight times–not sure if it was the same pitch called each time–at which point there was nothing for Jorge to do but go talk to him. This can kinda go both ways, on the one hand I appreciate the confidence of a pitcher who knows exactly what he wants to throw even in his first MLB appearnace. On the other, he probably should STFU and throw whatever is called. Has Posada said anything about this? Looks like Joba is the goods, however.

  36. Evan Hanahoe August 8th, 2007 at 10:22 am

Does anyone know why they brought up Brower instead of Edwar? I prefer Brower to Farnsworth but that’s not saying much

  37. younguns August 8th, 2007 at 12:38 pm

It was Stick Michael who recommended that AAA SWB relief pitcher Jim Brower be promoted to the Bronx.

I don’t know about the rest of you people, but his word is good enough for me.

Brower is considered a Ramiro Mendoza-type reliever who can be plugged in for more than 1 inning on back-to-back days. I read that he is capable of doing 2 innings per outing for 3 days in a row if need be.

Give Brower some time and a chance.

And for the folks here who aren’t too familiar with Stick, it was Stick who GM’ed the team back in the early 1990s and brought into and developed within the Yankee system talents such as Bernie, Jeter, Pettitte, Rivera, Posada, and Mendoza.

As for Edwar, as exceptional as his changeup is, his fastball is only adequate. His control of it and his ability to hit his spots will decide if he will have any future in the Bronx. Use Edwar’s time at AAA to work on the control of his fastball and other secondary, non-mickey pitches. If he were to develop a good 2-seamer/sinker combo to go along with his Mickey Mouse, then he’ll be able keep hitters off-balance by changing speeds while keeping the ball down.

Getting lots of groundballs doesn’t hurt either.

  38. Evan Hanahoe August 9th, 2007 at 9:27 am

Thanks for that analysis. I agree about relying on Stick’s judgment. I like your analysis of Edwar also, it makes a lot of sense.
