Not sure if I like Bruney being gone, but Cairo needed to go. When was the last time he even started, much less appeared in a game? He was the Mike Myers of the position players.

  2. emobacca August 7th, 2007 at 5:59 pm

When does Brower get shipped out for Edwar?

  3. KAJ August 7th, 2007 at 5:59 pm

    Today’s Yankees !!!

    Damon LF
    Jeter SS
    Abreu RF
    A-Rod 3b
    Posada C
    Cano 2b
    Phillips 1b
    Duncan DH
    Cabrera CF

CLEMENS to pitch a GEM ! Go Yankees !

  4. Ryan August 7th, 2007 at 6:00 pm

Is there a chance Cairo clears waivers? Only a 1 year 750K contract. I would think some team would claim him?

  5. Bob from NJ August 7th, 2007 at 6:01 pm

    Nice

  6. Matt August 7th, 2007 at 6:01 pm

Best of luck to Miguel. He is a class act and has come up big for this team a couple times this year. With the arrival of Betimit and the way the roster is shaping up, this is the right move. Anyhow, we’ll miss ya Miguel!!

  7. ron August 7th, 2007 at 6:01 pm

joe torre and suzyn waldman sould have a good cry over the departure of miguel cairo.

  8. Other Pete August 7th, 2007 at 6:01 pm

    Jambi’s in uniform tonight? Mekka-lekka-hai, mekka-heiney-ho!

  9. will August 7th, 2007 at 6:01 pm

except myers had what, over 70IP, which is sort of opposite the point you’re making.

  10. Mr. Faded Glory August 7th, 2007 at 6:01 pm

Good. Cairo was completely redundant. I think this withthe Proctor deal shows Cash is taking charge of the roster, regardless of who Torre has as his favorites.

  11. cc August 7th, 2007 at 6:01 pm

Cairo had an odd trajectory. Didn’t he bolt to the Mets for more money last year? Maybe Cashman has finally explained to Torre that guys like him are easy to find.

I think I like over Villone. Or is the only lefty at this point? I think the need for a lefty is overstated but I suppose it’s good to have one.

  12. Khoa August 7th, 2007 at 6:02 pm

No MAtsui? Oh well. Let’s get er done!

  13. cc August 7th, 2007 at 6:02 pm

meant to say Bruney over Villone…

  14. Stef August 7th, 2007 at 6:03 pm

Pete — it was reported on ESPN that Bruney kicked over a chair in anger on his way out. Is this typical of his general attitude? I thought he was thrilled to be with the Yankees? Was he adversely affected by Farnsworth while he was with the club?

Did you see the scene yourself?

  15. will August 7th, 2007 at 6:04 pm

and to echo what most people have been saying…the team’s getting better, but i’ll miss cairo. he stepped up in a lot of spots when the team was hurting, not just this year, but last as well. he seems to be a good guy, and i appreciate everything he’s done for this club. best of luck to him, and hopefully he’ll clear waivers and end up back here, and back up once rosters expand.

  16. Motown Yankee Fan August 7th, 2007 at 6:04 pm

Cairo wanted to resign with the Yankees in 2005, but his agent screwed up and somehow Cairo wound up with the Mets. He then promptly fired said agent.

  17. Steve August 7th, 2007 at 6:05 pm

An excerpt from a Mark Feinsand article:

“To make room for Chamberlain, the Yankees will option Jeff Karstens
back to Scranton before tonight’s game. Edwar Ramirez also is expected
to be called up from Scranton before the end of the week, completing a
major turnover of the bullpen that started with last week’s trade of
Scott Proctor to the Dodgers for infielder Wilson Betemit.”

This of course was written when it was reported that Karstens, not Bruney, was sent down.

  18. MattNC August 7th, 2007 at 6:05 pm

Sorry to see Miguel go, but he was not valuable enough to keep on the roster (career OPS+ a dismal 76, and reading of 64, 59 and 70 from 05-07), despite his fielding ability at SS and 2B, and his running ability.

We do need to find a pinch runner, though. Right now, Damon would be the only guy who might come of the bench that would fit that bill.

Glad to see that Duncan is still here. His RH pop might save a game or two for us down the stretch, and maybe in the postseason.

Overall, our rotation, bench and bullpen should look much stronger a month from now (f Hughes and Joba settle in, and if Betemit and Duncan keep producing), when the real pennant drive starts.

  19. BBFan August 7th, 2007 at 6:06 pm

    Imagine the bench today!!!

    Giambi, Matsui, Betemit,……
And there is no weak spot in the starting line up.
Who would have thought about it a month back?

Soon we would be talking about the same about bullpen!?!

  20. whozat August 7th, 2007 at 6:07 pm

“except myers had what, over 70IP”

    40.2

it’s not that hard to use google to look these things up, you know.

  21. whozat August 7th, 2007 at 6:08 pm

“We do need to find a pinch runner, though. Right now, Damon would be the only guy who might come of the bench that would fit that bill.”

I think that he’ll be on the bench when Giambi’s playing, most of the time.

  22. Stuart August 7th, 2007 at 6:09 pm

The Yanks control Bruney. he needs to go to SWB and work on his control.. the only guy i want gone that is still here is Krazy man Kyle…

There may be addtl. moves for the pen; edwar, britton, and others.. they still have options…..

  23. will August 7th, 2007 at 6:11 pm

whozat, thanks, the point i was getting at was that he has been used a lot. isn’t that on track for his most innings for the yanks? i understand it’s pretty easy to look things up on google, but i’m trying to pretend i’m being productive at work

  24. alan August 7th, 2007 at 6:13 pm

“joe torre and suzyn waldman sould have a good cry over the departure of miguel cairo.’

    u r funny

  25. Gary August 7th, 2007 at 6:15 pm

Farnsworth is the only real weak link on the roster and because of his attitude, demeanor, and stubborness – not his ability.

  26. UtilityMan August 7th, 2007 at 6:16 pm

How quickly we forget what Miguel did for the team before Phillips arrived.
And no Miguel did not bolt for the Muts last yr,He went to the Muts in 2005 after a mix up with his agent and Cashman.
He said he never wanted to leave after 2004!No reason why Shelly Duncan couldnt have been sent down to play evryday, then be recalled for Sept 1 call ups.
Miguel will land on his feet with a team (Dodgers,Padres) I just hope it isnt the Redsux!!
The guy did everything for them, even was the emergency third catcher.
Lets also not forget what he did last yr when Cano went down for a month with a hamstring injury.

Yes Wilson Betemit is a better hitter, and I am a fan of his, they could have kept Cairo! But I guess its like everything else What have you done for me lately!
So we have Jason G sitting there on the bench as a DH-PH instead of Cairo, who can run from 1st to 3rd on a basehit,Not station to station.
At least I still have Ron Villone on the team.

  27. whozat August 7th, 2007 at 6:18 pm

“whozat, thanks, the point i was getting at was that he has been used a lot.”

No, he hasn’t. Proctor had 50+ innings before he left. Vizcaino has almost 60. He was on pace for a personal high in IP, but that’s because he’s generally been used for only 1 batter at a time in his career, and Joe broke that mold. He’d had a lot of appearances, but lots of appearances doesn’t mean much if you’re not consuming a lot of innings. The important thing here is that he wasn’t able to do his job, which is get out tough lefties. He also wasn’t helping balance the bullpen load.

  28. Bob from NJ August 7th, 2007 at 6:19 pm

Giambi is approximately 20 times more valuable than Cairo. That’s not an exaggeration.

  29. sunny615 August 7th, 2007 at 6:21 pm

    Good Moves for the Yankees.

Cairo is a good man and teammate, but a mere shadow compared to Betemit talents. Bruney needs to accept his demotion with some grace and realize he needs to fine tune his mechanics and control.

Farns is the last pimple on the Yankees’ collective a$$ that needs to be popped. The sooner, the better.

  30. UtilityMan August 7th, 2007 at 6:22 pm

    Yeah Ok

  31. Kevin August 7th, 2007 at 6:24 pm

Really now, I don’t understand all the love for Cairo. He’s the definition of a replacement level baseball player.

From a less analytical perspective, since that seems to be the tone, would ANYONE be scared to see Miguel Cairo bat in a big situation against the Yankees? Let’s say the Red Sox pick him up off waivers – I’d love to see that 0-fer at the bottom of their lineup.

He’s a decent fielder/runner with no bat. There are hundreds of those guys in the minor leagues.

  32. sunny615 August 7th, 2007 at 6:26 pm

I don’t think anyone disputes that Kevin (altho he’s had his share of big hits and nice defensive plays)… I think a lot of fans here appreciate how good of a teammate he was as much as what he brought to the team.

  33. Justin August 7th, 2007 at 6:27 pm

According that silly BP TV, Duncan is DH, Damon is LF, and Phillips is 1b. So, Mats and Giambi make up a pretty imposing beginning of the bench tonight.

  34. UtilityMan August 7th, 2007 at 6:29 pm

    Sunny

I agree with your comment on Betemits’ talents over Cairo,my beef is having Giambi taking his roster spot.
Any before I get corrected by someone, I am aware that Joba Chamberlain took Cairos spot on the 40/25 Man roster.
Giambi was not on the 60Day DL so he just takes Bruneys spot in that instance.
If Giambi was to be added back into the mix, then Duncan could have been recalled 9-1-07.
Just hope Torre dosent do what he did last yr with Sheff and Matsui playing over Cabrera.

  35. susan mullen August 7th, 2007 at 6:47 pm

You hear about Joba’s father’s close involvement as you do with a lot of other big league players. Sometimes it’s a mother, but usu. a father. Egs. Fathers of Ichiro, Piazza, both got out there with them for hours every day. It may just be anecdotal, but you probably have to have at least one strong parent driving you to make it to the big leagues.

  36. Raul August 7th, 2007 at 7:05 pm

I feel the rigth moves were done again..except M.Cairo,he is a guy that will always help.I feel sorry for him

  37. Ron August 7th, 2007 at 7:07 pm

Miguel Cairo is by all accounts a wonderful human being. Miguel Cairo is also by just about every statistical anaylsis in excistence a terrible baseball player. Average-at-best defense, zero pop, can’t hit on base when he’s not getting hit by pitches. 2004 was a mirage, and it earned him two and a half more years of sucking up outs.

  38. Chris August 7th, 2007 at 7:30 pm

    UtilityMan = Joe Torre

It’s funny how everyone wanted Cairo gone cause he is an awful player than only kept his job because because he was the manager’s pet. The moment the Yanks get rid of him, people complain. Yankee fans don’t know what they want. It makes you want to punch a kitten.

  39. THU August 7th, 2007 at 7:34 pm

Best wishes for Cairo. I hope he goes gets a chance to paly more elsewhere.

  40. 2007 Yankees August 7th, 2007 at 7:48 pm

    Chris:
You root for the guys on your team. But when they acquire a BETTER utility guy who can field AND hit, you have to do things like this. Cairo was a good guy on the Yankees but they now have a better team without him on the roster. This is the team that I have waited all season for….

  41. sunny615 August 7th, 2007 at 8:07 pm

Joe Torre already stated “Melky is our Center Fielder” Period. It looks like Damon and Gimabi will be the primary DH’s with Matsui taking the other times off. Duncan will only be demoted for two weeks… if he can stand up in September, he may get more of a shot later on.

  42. Mr. Faded Glory August 7th, 2007 at 8:30 pm

sunny615: Joe Torre already stated “Melky is our Center Fielder Period.

Yeah well, Torre’s stated a LOT of things that he then completely ignores come game time.

  43. KAJ August 7th, 2007 at 8:38 pm

    what is going on ?

  44. Scott09 August 7th, 2007 at 8:42 pm

Clearly, John Macdonald, while going the other way, threw a ball that knocked out the blog.

  45. jason August 7th, 2007 at 8:45 pm

    Blog is screwed up.
Clemens looks awesome tonight. It’s the best his split has looked this year.

  46. Jim Johnson August 7th, 2007 at 8:48 pm

Pete forgot to close a tag when making an update, most likely.

  47. jason August 7th, 2007 at 8:51 pm

    You gotta love Duncan!

  48. Scott09 August 7th, 2007 at 8:53 pm

Clearly, Duncan was angered by Macdonald taking out the blog.

  49. Jim Johnson August 7th, 2007 at 8:54 pm

GREAT hardnosed play by Duncan. Awesome.

  50. Jim Johnson August 7th, 2007 at 8:55 pm

    Clearly.

  51. Paolo August 7th, 2007 at 8:58 pm

We need at least get Duncan back and give the SOB Towers another ER…

  52. Paolo August 7th, 2007 at 8:59 pm

    Oh, yes!!!

  53. Paolo August 7th, 2007 at 9:01 pm

    Oh, Bobby!!!

  54. YanksFanLV August 7th, 2007 at 9:03 pm

Well since the Yanks are so far ahead, might as well run Farnsy out for the 8th and have him throw a 100mph heater at someone. Thats about all he’s good for.

  55. Scott09 August 7th, 2007 at 9:06 pm

    Farnsy would miss.

  56. Scott09 August 7th, 2007 at 9:06 pm

It would likely be a strike.

  57. Master Shake August 7th, 2007 at 9:07 pm

Why is Karstens still up? He’s awful. He should be sent down or DFA’d. There is no reason for Bruney to have been sent down.

  58. Keith FL August 7th, 2007 at 9:11 pm

Looks like the extremely short outing for Clemens last time has helped him…he looks awesome…almost reminds me of the ALCS vs. Seattle in 2000 when he had the 1 hitter….Sox fans are probably cringing at the way we are playing…..if the bullpen can straighten out we have a shot at winning it all…first time I have felt like that all year…feels good!!! This also reminds me of how the Sox got hot in 2004 after struggling, won the WC, and of course the WS…maybe we can do the same!!! Could this almost brawl tonight be our Varitek-AROD moment???

  59. Peter Abraham August 7th, 2007 at 9:12 pm

Previous post is fixed. Please go back to commenting there. Not sure what happened.

  60. sunny615 August 7th, 2007 at 9:18 pm

I still can’t comment – on the next post for the game – am I the only one?

  61. will August 7th, 2007 at 9:20 pm

    nope, i’ve got nothing either

  62. sunny615 August 7th, 2007 at 9:21 pm

well, cano got hit, I think once Rocket knows he’s coming out – one jay is going to get beaned

  63. Keith FL August 7th, 2007 at 9:21 pm

    I can’t either….

  64. will August 7th, 2007 at 9:22 pm

    it’s working now, i think

  65. Peter Abraham August 7th, 2007 at 9:30 pm

comments should work now hopefully. sorry for the mess.

  66. Doug S August 7th, 2007 at 10:01 pm

Bruney got screwed. Personally I’m glad he kicked that chair over. Shows that he has some fire.

  67. Master Shake August 8th, 2007 at 12:04 am

It’s an absolute joke that Brower and Karstens are on the major league team while Bruney gets sent to Scranton.
