Yanks can get compensated for A-Rod

Peter Abraham
August
10

A few people have e-mailed about about A-Rod’s contract. To clear up those questions, I e-mailed Brian Cashman.

The Yankees CAN offer Alex arbitration if he opts to become a free agent and then would receive compensation in the form of draft picks if he signs with another team.

Under the terms of the current deal, arbitration cannot be offered after the 2010 season. That is the final year of the contract as it stands now.

So if A-Rod leaves, the Yanks would get the picks.

Now before you say “oh, sure, draft picks” consider this:

The Yankees received the 21st and 41st selections of the 2006 draft in compensation for losing Tom Gordon to the Phillies. Those picks turned into Ian Kennedy and Joba Chamberlain.

The Yankees had lost their own pick that season (No. 28) for Johnny Damon. Boston turned that into RHP Daniel Bard

  1. A.B.K

Great Job Peter, Thanks for the info.

  2. KAJ

of course, this is all moot, as A-Rod will finish his career AND become the all-time HR Champion as a Yankee, no matter who his dink of an agent is…

  3. E-rod

I hope he opts out and we can get some draft picks who can hit in the playoffs…

  4. ND Yank

The Yanks need more than a couple first rounders to make up for the most talented player to don the pinstripes since Mantle.

  5. ElMaestro

    Alex will retire a Yankee.

  6. Rebecca

Why is it that I feel fans won’t accept Arod as a true Yankee till he has a ring around his finger?

Don Mattingly never got a ring, and he’s as Yankee as they come!

  7. Kevin M.

Pete….thanks for the scoop. I think it’s kind of cool that Cashman takes the time to e-mail the reporters back, considerng how swamped he must be. Pretty classy.

Pete…can you tell us what the media’s impression of Cashman is?

  8. Kevin M.

P.S. Very subtle dig at the Red Sox for taking Bard over Chamberlain…nice job….think they might like to reconsider???? LOL…

  9. younguns

Right-Handed Pitcher Rick Porcello, who many considered the best prep pitcher in this year’s draft, dropped all the way down to 27th before he was picked by the hated Tigers in the 1st Round.

So, there is definitely top quality in the Baseball Draft even at the bottom of the 1st round and we owe it all to that Boras guy.

    Who would have thunk?

  10. ...

I sincerely hope for the Yankees sake, my sake, Alex’s sake, that he remains with the Yankees for an amount that won’t bring him more negative attention.

He’s finally gaining some NY acceptance, and is really an unreplaceable player.

He’s going to be the best player to ever step on the field by the time it’s all said and done, and why not do it with the best team in sports…the ring will come.

  11. Eric

Pete, do you know if the Yanks will receive compensation if they don’t pick up Abreu’s option this offseason? Can they offer arbitration?

  12. Miguel

Yeah but Donnie’s the exception…he’s the only guy in Monument Park without multiple rings as a Yankee. And he is, of course, a Yankee from day 1. mind you, I’m not saying that I don’t think A-Rod is a true Yankee—I wore my A-Rod t-shirt at a gig I played last night. But it is understandable why some Yankee fans make the World Series such a big deal–that’s what we’re about. I am a fan of all the Yankees except Farnsworth, but I gotta admit that I’m a little biased towards Jeter, Mo, Posada, Clemens, and Pettitte…they gave me my best baseball-watching memories.

  13. Miguel

so I guess when you use two dashes to connect a thought the result is a line through what you wrote. Nice. also…forgot to mention in that list…Joe Torre. (here it comes…)

  14. Hello

“Why is it that I feel fans won’t accept Arod as a true Yankee till he has a ring around his finger?”

It depends on what team is on that ring j/k. Even if A-rod wins one WS with the Yankees you”re going to have those faction of fans that says he still doesn’t have as many rings as________ or that the Yankees won more with Brosius. A-rod is a catch-22 with the some of the Yankee “fans”.

  15. Dave

Don’t forget Hughes, he was drafted with a pick from the Astros for Pettite leaving…

  16. E-rod

So if the Yankees offer ARod arbitration TODAY and he opts out TOMORROW can we get some good draft picks who can hit for us in THIS years postseason?

  17. ...

    E-Rod —

    You’re crazy dude.

The Yankees would be no where near the postseason without A-Rod. Fact.

  18. NJ

    Nice name drop Peter :)

  19. mel

A-rod has finally become a true Yankee (i.e. gaining acceptance in clubhouse and fans). But if he chooses to leave, NY fans will give him as much love and regard as they would a rotten banana.

The Yankees will offer very good money, so it’s just a matter of where he wants to play. If he leaves, it will definitely be his loss.

They’re not in his stratosphere, so the poor Yankee fans would be forced to cheer for the likes of Jeter, Mo, Posada, Wang, Cano, Cabrera, Hughes, and Chamberlain. Ugh, how can it get any worse? lol.

  20. hmmm

“The Yankees will offer very good money, so it’s just a matter of where he wants to play. If he leaves, it will definitely be his loss.”

    will it though?

witness what the NY media did to him this week with Chipper’s comments.

it’s not a slam dunk if you are Alex. he’s been treated like sh*t since day 1 in NY by the media, by the fans, and by his manager at times.

just look at idiots like “E-Rod” who still come around.

i think Alex will stay, but let’s not make it sound like it’s impossible for him to be happier elsewhere.

  21. Tony

    Pete,
gut feeling, is A-Rod playing 3rd for the Yankees next year??

  22. Gibb

the yankees should get like 4 or 5 draft picks for Arod

  23. SJ44

What is it with the trolls the last few days? Tonight will be a nightmare in the game thread as these trolls seem to have nothing better to do until school starts up again.

Looks like Pete may have to do a massive cleanup job to get rid of some of these folks. I have the feeling they won’t go away on their own.

  24. Gibb

*before some jack@ss jumps all over me, that was a joke, i dont want arod to leave i was just saying that if i did, that’s the kind of supplemental pick amount he’d be worth

  25. chris in fairfield

michael kay said on his radio show that cashman got wilson betemit just in case a-rod does opt out .

  26. chris in fairfield

how and when did torre ever treat a-rod like sh*t ?

  27. David

Kay is increasingly unbearable to listen to. To equate Alex with Wilson is idiocy. Even if Alex leaves, Betemit would never be the regular 3rd baseman for the Yankees. I like him as a bench/role player– which is why Cash got him, Michael. Has anyone heard anything to corroborate the Kepner report that Edwar is up tonight?

  28. saucy

“the yankees should get like 4 or 5 draft picks for Arod”

they should probably just get the first round to themselves…

  29. Jeter Fan

Lol, Torre should bat A-rod 8th tonight and he isn’t worth arbitration either.

  30. Lil' Jimmy Norden

nice, a bit of a silver lining should a-rod opt out.

  31. Az

how about arods double play against angels in 05 playoffs. is he still our mvp?

  32. E-rod

Yeah that double play killed us,I’ll never forget it nor forgive him.

  33. mel

    hmmm,

I wasn’t really thinking of the media when I made that comment. It’ll be his loss, because the Yankees are the best baseball team in history and best major league organization in any sport. Just look out at monument park. You want your name in the record books with the likes of Mantle, Ruth, DiMaggio, and Gehrig, or with Vladimir Guerrero? Big Picture. What would his legacy be in his short tenure with the Yankees? 3 MVP’s and hitting #500 while being a Yankee? If A-rod chooses to opt out, he’d be a blip on the Yankee radar. He’s relevant to us now because he’s playing now.

In regards to the media, yeah he gets reamed unfairly in New York. He’ll still be a lighting rod wherever he goes just not as magnified. LA? It’ll go from the NY Post to the National Enquirer & Star. He’ll be sharing ink with Lohan & Paris.

Don’t get me wrong, I want Alex to stay. But if he goes, I won’t cry over it. I come from the school of “Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.”

I also don’t like it when when people play hard to get. I understand it because they’re sports figures trying to get a better deal, but I still don’t like it and not everyone does it.

Proctor update: Got a win for LA to help break their losing streak.

  34. DesignatedBlogger

ARod will remain with the Yankees. He’s aware of his place in history, now more than ever since he hit his 500th HR. Don’t you think he wants to go down in history as one of the greatest all-time Yankees players? He won’t make the same mistake Winfield made, choosing to go into the HOF as a Padre and giving up the glory and the tradition of the Yankees, and a chance for a monument iat Yankee Stadium. ARod will stay.

  35. hmmm

“how and when did torre ever treat a-rod like sh*t ?”

    last year. Sport Illustrated article.

i have never, ever heard Torre disclose the contents of a closed-door meeting to a member of the media in the middle of a season for any other player.

also, i won’t re-hash the batting A-Rod 8th crap, since i already know your response. but Torre was batted him 6th in the first game of the playoffs and Sheffield 4th. Sheffield, who had been every bit of a failure in the playoffs as A-Rod, and had missed almost the entire season is handed the cleanup spot while A-Rod is dropped.

  36. Russell NY

Hafner left his game with a knee injury. Just in time.

  37. E-rod

ARod has struggled since the all star break now he’ll blame his sore leg.

  38. David

It is Bedard tonight. ESPN was wrong. So we get him Wednesady.

  39. whozat

“how about arods double play against angels in 05 playoffs. is he still our mvp?”

What about the game winning run he manufactured by himself in the last game of the 04 ALDS?

Oh, right, that’s a good thing so it’s not worth remembering.

As for Bobby’s contract that someone asked about…I think they CAN buy out his option and then offer him arbitration. Then, if he left, they’d get draft picks. That’d be weird, though. I figure they’d just try to restructure his deal…maybe give him 25 million over the next two years or something, or get 08 for 13 mil and have a vesting 15 million dollar option for 09. Or something. I mean, Bobby’s a great hitter that fits really well into the Yankee philosophy and has a cannon in right. He seems like a great teammate, and the first part of the season was SUCH an aberration to me. If he finishes the year strong, I think they have to at least pick up his option, and maybe consider reworking it into a short extension.

  40. hmmm

“how about arods double play against angels in 05 playoffs. is he still our mvp?”

how about Jeter hitting .200 in the 2004 ALCS?
how about Mariano blowing the save in the 2001 WS or 2004 ALCS?
how about Matui hitting .200 in the 2005 ALDS?
how about Giambi sitting out the 2004 ALCS b/c of steroids?
how about Sheffield hitting .083 in the 2006 ALDS?
how about Posada hitting .158 in the 2003 WS?

there is plenty of blame to go around. you win as a team, you lose as a team.

  41. saucy

i’m really surprised nobody has read Pete’s post as somehow bashing A-Rod yet …

  42. David

Although ESPN still has Burres listed for Wednesday, this would be Bedard’s regular turn. So who knows?

  43. mel

    saucy,

It’s like any childish behavior. Give it two weeks and it usually disappears.

  44. Farnsy

Can we trade Farnsworth as a ball boy?

  45. Skinny Mike

    E-Rod,

Seems like you live a miserable life with way too much time on your hands. It is kind of pathetic that someone would spend so much time blogging negative things about one player. Almost creepy. Get a life bro.

  46. hmmm

“hahaha,I’ll be glad if he finishes with 45 homers.”

except 45 HRs is a *lot* of HRs. since when is 45 HRs not a fantastic season? especially for a RH hitter in Yankee stadium. there is a reason no one besides A-Rod has done it since DiMaggio.

everytime you post you sound stupider.

  47. whozat

E-Rod is a troll. He comes here to get attention from us by saying annoying and/or inflammatory things. Never, ever respond to a post of his.

  48. ND Yank

Don’t feed the trolls. Best thing to do is ignore. Skip right over those posts.

  49. Mike NYY

Well that’s a silver lining. Obviously not much of one but its still a silver lining. Still, I want to bring him back for whatever it takes. Even if over 30 million a year. He`s worth it

  50. mel

Did anyone go to the jabachamberlain site? I’m intrigued to see the quality of a site that misspells the athlete’s name in its domain name. But not intrigued enough to risk a virus.

  51. saucy

mel, i did foolishly. the domain name is for sale. that’s it.

  52. mel

    saucy,

HaHa. Thanks. That’s so lame. I thought it would be an amateur site with some pix & bio info. I’d call that domain name a defective product.

  53. John L

Brian Burress is back in the bullpen for the Orioles. Bedard will be pitching on Wednesday night.

  54. Brian

    E-Rod,

Get a life and go away.

  55. Guy Incognito

OT, but apparently Scott Spiezio is “checkin’ in” on the rehab train. Apparently he has admitted to alcohol and drug addiction, and was treated with intravenous fluids in the Cardinals clubhouse on Monday evening after reporting an elevated heart rate, nervousness, anxiousness and sweating.

Sounds like acute cocaine intoxication to me, and of the sort that comes after overuse of the substance. Regardless, I hope he gets the help he needs.

Someone needs to really get the Cardinal clubhouse under control. After Josh Hancock, how many more have to die?

  56. Kill Schill-(ing)

Yo, want to read a great article on why A-Rod is staying in the Bronx, check this out: http://theyankeesrepublic.blogspot.com

It’s long as heck, but if you have the time, read it. It’s worth it. I had 30 minutes to kill at work this morning. It changed my whole outlook on the A-Rod contract situation. The guy totally convinced me Boras is going to keep A-Rod a Yankee.

  57. Jamie

dont know if it was mentioned yet but when we lost Pettite it did turn into Phil Hughes… (draft pick)

  58. dan

and now bard is getting his ass kicked against low-level competition

  59. dan

any word on kennedy possibly starting for clemens?

  60. YanksSox

I like how e-rod made up the name Az and started talking to himself

    \really hope he isn’t a Sox fan

  61. YanksSox

“and now bard is getting his ass kicked against low-level competition”

Bard was very overrated in the draft because he threw 100mph. He has never, at any level, shown great command of his fastball, or the opportunity to actually get batters out on a consistent basis.

  62. Joe L

The same Daniel Bard who Gammons basically gave Theo a happy ending for drafting in a few columns as one of the signs that he’s the GM who has been brought in to save baseball.

The only reason I know who Bard is, is because Gammons wet himself talking about the prospect.

I wonder where the column is that mentions that Theo “Boy Genius” aka “The Chosen One” passed up Joba.

I doubt we’ll see that one since the Yankee brain trust is not one of Gammons’ pet GM’s.

It’s Cashman’s fault really since apparently he has better to things to do besides play in a lousy garage band and send out fake announcements about his wedding to the press.

  63. al leiter for president

it’s a non-issue everyone. according to the RedSox fans, he’s signing with them – they don’t want lowell anymore and they are going after alex hard. ;) god they are such hypocrites!

you want to talk about how badly NYY fans treat him? PLEASE.
and frankly, it’s more the media than the fans. I say he stays. IF he leaves he looks like:

    1) greedy
    2) a quitter

regardless of what he or the yankees may or may not do in the playoffs, i’d like to see him stick around.

  64. randy l

arod and the yankees are a perfect fit. he’s the best player in the league. they are the best franchise, and they have the biggest stage.
both sides have to do the negotiating tap dance to set the price.
    arod stays a yankee.

  65. Jax

This is good news just in case Arod leaves. We would get a first rounder and a sandwich pick. Plus it’s going to be a pretty deep draft next year.

  66. Tony

why even feed the troll E-Rod, you know if he met him he would be the first one to drop to his knees.

  67. whozat

“His treatment of A-Rod will play a big role in Torre not invited back for next year by Boss or his kids. And, Cashman will not fight it this time.”

I think a much more important factor in not having Torre back is that it’s nigh impossible to build new talent under him unless he’s forced. Unfortunately, the media will make it out to be all about ARod. And, since Jeter will have expressed support for Torre’s return, they’ll make it sound like Joe’s being forced out so ARod will stay, and try and turn it into bad blood between Alex and Derek.

Hopefully, they win a championship and Joe calls it a day quickly so there’s no time for back-and-forth he-said-he-said nonsense.

  68. hmmm

“arod and the yankees are a perfect fit. he’s the best player in the league. they are the best franchise, and they have the biggest stage.
both sides have to do the negotiating tap dance to set the price.

    arod stays a yankee.”

    amen.

  69. Peter Abraham

There’s stupid and then there’s the troll “E-Rod.”

The dope is posting with his sprint/PCS phone. So his number pops up when I look at the comments.

So, E-Rod, stop trolling or you’re going to have a few thousand Yankee fans calling you.

  70. Bob from NJ

If Alex leaves, I won’t be upset with him or with Boras. I will be angry with the NY media and with the stupid, shortsighted fans who have been trying to run A Rod out of town because he isn’t a “True Yankee” and other rubbish that has been made up and spewed all over the papers, internet and TV.

    A Rod’s career postseason stats: .280/.362/.485
Derek Jeter’s career postseason stats: .314/.384/.479

Pretty much the same, for all intents and purposes. Granted, the sample size is a problem, but that doesn’t stop A Rod’s detractors from labeling him a “choke artist” etc.

    2004 ALCS
    A Rod: .258/.378/.516
    Jeter: .200/.333/.233

    Hmmmm.

Also, I can’t believe the people saying “Betemit isn’t a starting 3b.” You’re the same people yearning for the days of Scott Brosius, who was never even close to the player Betemit is today. Betemit is an above average 3b. If A Rod leaves, he is our best option, by far. Sign Lowell to a long, expensive contract? No thanks, I’ll keep young, switch hitting, inexpensive Betemit.

That being said, a cheap Betemit + draft picks does not leave us as well off as paying A Rod a monster salary and keeping Betemit as our UTL INF. That being said, Cash helped us in the near term and gave us some insurance, it was a great trade.

  71. Bob from NJ

Really? Two “That being said”s in a row? I’m embarrassed.

  72. Mr. Vegas

I didn’t think ARod would opt out, and this news about the draft picks only reinforces that belief. What this means is that potential bidders for Alex’s services would have to not only have the bucks he is expected to command, but be willing to give up draft picks as well. That has to drive down his asking price as a free agent, making it less likely he will want to opt out of his Yankees contract.

  73. Josh

I wonder how the line-up will look tonight. Does anybody think Giambi will be in there tonight? He did hit a home run off Carmona back in April.

  74. RyanM

I just wish the NY Post and NY Daily News would stop hurting our chances of retaining Alex. With the crap they pull, most noticeably the steroid controversy, I’m sure Alex is thinking about how he wouldn’t have to deal with crap like this in another city.

Chipper says, “I don’t think Alex has done steroids.” And they turn that story into a whole story about Alex and steroids? Seriously, aren’t there some smart people over there that realizes this could very well hurt our chances of getting Alex to sign an extension?

  75. InsertNewSN

    Mr.Vegas–

I don’t think the draft picks will stop teams from trying to sign A-Rod if he opts out. Every team gets draft picks from players leaving, so teams have come to expect it. It isn’t something that the Angels (for example) will look at as a possible deal breaker.

  76. ND Yank

That’s great Pete. If the troll keeps it up you should definitely post his phone number. Classic.

  77. hmmm

What this means is that potential bidders for Alex’s services would have to not only have the bucks he is expected to command, but be willing to give up draft picks as well. That has to drive down his asking price as a free agent, making it less likely he will want to opt out of his Yankees contract.

i have to disagree. it will not drive down his asking price at all.

giving up your draft pick is something you weigh in the decision before signing Mark Loretta or Rich Aurilia.

you don’t blink an eye if it means signing a Hall of Famer.

did the draft pick “drive down” Zito’s price? Soriano’s? Carlos Lee’s?

if Alex opts out, he’s getting a $160-200M contract from someone.

  78. saucy

“Really? Two “That being saidâ€?s in a row? I’m embarrassed.”

    Bob, you’re fired!

  79. keithny

I’m sure several of you have heard of the “Jeter gave Alba herpes” internet rumor. You *know* if this was Arod, it would be the scandal of the year all over the back pages. A-IDS

  80. Larry

Hopefully Phil will show up tonight and not repeat KC. That wasn’t a particularly good showing, but understandable after a long DL layoff.

I also hope that Torre puts Giambi where he belongs: the bench. Things were just fine with catalysts like Damon and Jeter at the top of the lineup and Melky at the bottom. Why fix the shoe if it ain’t broke?

  81. dontfirecash

That Bard pick worked out real well for Boston..HA!

  82. Larry

People, please, can we let the A-Rod contract BS wait until after the season like everyone in the Yankees organization is doing along with A-Rod and Boras?

If Jeter pounded Alba, kudos to him for it. That is awesome. She is definitely the hottest to date that I am aware of.

Herpes wise, that sucks, but as long as it doesn’t affect his play, who cares.

  83. hmmm

“The dope is posting with his sprint/PCS phone. So his number pops up when I look at the comments.”

it is amazing what technology has allowed us to accomplish. it frees us up to troll baseball blogs from wherever we are. thomas edison would be proud.

  84. hmmm

i thought it was Jessica *Biel*.

  85. mel

    Pete,

You’re such the Godfather. Creative solutions to minor “problems”.

E-rod’s like the guy who writes the holdup note on his deposit slip.

  86. randyhater

“The Yanks. received the 21st and 41st selections…as compensation for losing Tom Gordon.”

Which is why I don’t get Cash lowballing on Gagne. Assuming his numbers warrant A compensation, Boston struck gold unloading a junkballer, a 4th outfielder and some teenager for two top 50 picks and the best bullpen arm available, even if he has started slow.

  87. Ron Benbow

Kill-Schill, you’re right. Thanks for the link. Great article. I’ve touted that dude’s site before. He always has good stuff.

  88. taylor

Daniel Bard isn’t any good, but thanks for the info. That is a positive.

  89. WebmistressEMC

Didn’t the same thing happen to a taken-out-of-context quote from David Ortiz about “shakes” that he used to take when he was a youngster back in the DM?

Yankee fans were all over that like white on rice, and the NY media weren’t any better.

If it’s a Red Sox, it must be true. If it’s a Yankee, no way! (unless there’s an arrest warrant, a summons, or an indictment in the works)
