We still got a ways to go and a lot of work to do, but man 4 games out, a Gagne blown save, and a MILLLLAAAHH walk off is incredible…
This homestand coming up now is huge.
still in position to make a nice run for ANOTHER RING !
we just need to keep doing what we are doing.. at 15 over .500, we just need to worry about winning our games and forget about the standings..
4 games out sounds great though!!!!!
Mwoo. Ha. Ha. Ha.
The “experts” were right! Gagne will help us out!
Gagne really is helping the Yankees afterall!
Oh. My. God.
But on the other hand, there goes Jeff Weaver, not helping at all!!!!!!
Great three days for our Yankees. There’s work ahead with the Orioles’ 3 best going, but this team (the Yankees) are really workin’it these days. You have to feel good. And it’s really, really incredible how Boston seems to play to script every year.
Looks like Torre isn’t the only one who makes baffling bullpen moves. Papelbon pitched a 1/3 of an inning yesterday and Francona refused to use him today.
Yeah what is it with Weaver? Must be the coffee in Seattle.
Would rather be 4 down looking up than 4 up looking down anytime.
Hoping Boston adheres to last August’s script!

at this rate, boston miss the post season, completely
Yankees are playing some of the best baseball throughout the season so far. Looks like they’ve found the missing link to winning. Hats off to the hitting coaches and the Yankee confidence these guys have now. We are hitting and scoring. Now with Giambi back another big hitter. We can’t be stopped.
I believe in the Yankees!!!!
WHERE IS PETER GAMMONS?!? I’m mailing a photo to my local dairy company to put his ugly mug on our milk cartons.
Top Cat -
Wouldn’t that be just the best thing??????
‘Cuz really, I just want all those people (professional people, not fans) who buried the Yankees in May to eat their words and the paper they wrote them on!!!
Melky goes deep today. Almost throws out a runner at second in the eighth and then has that huge hit and stolen base to score that 5fth run. He’s 23.
Gagne? We’ll his performance speaks for itself.
Mike Gonzales – the reliever from Pittsburgh people wanted Melky traded for last off season – out for the year with TJ.
Imagine if they had traded Melky?
NESN just did a nice retrospective on Gagne’s short stint in Beantown. ERA 15+, opposing team’s teeing off of him at a .455 clip.
My poor son would have been devastated if Melky went since he just got a Cabrera T-shirt for his birthday.
i wanna hear what 38-donuts has to say now!
Gagne as a Sox 4 inn, 7 runs, OPP .455
I really, really want a ‘Got Melky’ shirt…
Anyway, the Yankees are doing what they need to do. They’re taking it game by game, so if they have a bad game, like the one in Toronto where Wang was not his usual self, it doesn’t rub off.
Like, when Clemens had that awful outing against the White Sox and then came back and one hit Toronto through six.
Everything’s working right for the Yankees, and this is the team everyone knew they were supposed to be.
April and May was simply an aberration; if this is a portent of things to come, we’ll be enjoying October for many years yet to come!
The news is good so far but us Yankee fans need to calm down a little. Until the Yankees are officially in first place we can’t dump on the Gammons’ of the world who predicted the Yankees wouldn’t catch the Red Sox. Technically these haters are still correct until proven wrong. What the Yankees need to do is stay healthy and continue to play inspired ball and hopefully when the dust settles all the haters will have pie in their face.
“Cuz really, I just want all those people (professional people, not fans)…to eat their words”
Oh, I want to see the “fans” who gave up on this team to eat their words too. And to STFU for the next few years at least, or until they learn the basic facts about the rhythms and dynamics of a baseball season.
Andy gets the win, Giambi, Melky, Derek with big hits, Mo gets a gutty save, Gagne blows one, Millar gets revenge and wins it…The deficit is down to 4…Suicide watches in Boston…It don’t get much better than this.
look out chowds. the yanks are coming
who needs gagne gagne when you have joba
Over there, over there,
Send the word, send the word, over there,
For the Yanks are comin’, the Yanks are comin’,
and we won’t be runnin’ anymore
Rebecca, I really really want to see you in a “GOT MELK?” T-shirt.
It boggles my mind how these so called professional commentators let their hatred for the Yankees cloud their memories. Just last lear the Minnesota Twins came from way back in the standings to overtake the Tigers for the division late in the year. I’m not saying the Yankees are going to do it. All i’m saying is that it’s not impossible. It has been done before.
Wire services report that there’s a family of rodents living in the dreadlocks of Manny Ramirez.
More later on the 11:00 PM report.
Weather report after this commercial ……
Obviously, let us not count our chickens yet!!!!!
We should not take next series with Baltimore lightly. They have played us well this year, not just against Boston. We need to win this series and not slip the momentum.
Now that the lead is down to below 5, it is a psycholigical barrier that Boston has to feel/overcome. Now they should be doubting themselves and could result in a spiraling down turn.
Seattle has been playing well and down the road, they will not face the same kind of competition as Detroit/Cleveland/Minnesota as these three teams beat up on each other. So, it is very much possible that if we win the division, Boston may miss the playoffs with Seattle making it. Imagine what kind of pandemonium it will create in Boston.
Sure many on this blog gave up on the team when things were not going well. It is not the time to point fingers at them. Let us all collectively root for Yankees and win the division. Once we are in the playoffs, any thing can happen.
I’m as stoked as anyone here, but lets hope the Yankees can keep their foot on the gas and win the next four series. If that happens….we’re home free.
Clemens will bang his fist!
Melky could hit 20 to 25 homers a season if he plays everyday. Boston also gave up quite a bit for Gagne. I doubt it’ll affect hem long term, but sometimes the best trades are ones that you don’t make.
Let’s just hope they let Ian Kennedy pitch tuesday.
Great win, great last 2 1/2 months of baseball, the starters have been great recently, but I am still really worried about the present bullpen and about the insane decision to pitch Karstens on Tuesday (horrible, horrible decision).
Ok what is this bullpen made of right now? And if you’re Cashman are you satisfied? (I sure as hell hope not)!
1. Mo – no more needs to be said, the best period end of story.
2. Joba, is lights out but can’t pitch consecutive games and if they let him pitch for 2 innings (which was a mistake the other night btw) he has to take 2 days off. Please, don’t pitch him for 2 innings during a blow out!!!!.
3. Vizcaino – has been great but is showing signs of wearing down, gave up hit today to Martinez and was taken out after 2 batters for Mo in the 8th.
4. Farnsworthless – today’s game really shows what Torre thinks of Farnsworth, back in June he would have been the man in the 8th, but now relegated to blowouts, he is useless right now.
5. Villone – the only loogy right now and he can’t be trusted with the game on the line, was even shaky last night in an 11-2 blowout.
6. Karstens – he of the 10.00 era, should not be on this team, there at least 3 better options imo, Ramirez, Kennedy, even Bruney to name 3.
7. Brower – He should not be on the team either, he is a veteran journey man, mediocre stuff, who has never pitched well in the AL.
That’s 3 reliable RP’s, and 1 can only pitch every other day. The other 4 are horrible. Are you telling me that Myers, Proctor and Bruney are worse than those 4????
This is a recipe for disaster and it appears that Cashman still has a lot of work to do!!!!
Tim – You make some valid points, but, please, come in off the ledge. We did win, after all.
they do need another reliever. they have edwar and britton in SWB and they deserve a chance….
and the sox gave up Gabbard (5-1) and a leading prospect for BillyGoat.
they shot both of their own feet.
The bullpen will shape up by the end of the next week. Either there will be a trade from the waiver line or there will be promotions internally. Either way it will be different and hopefully it will be better.
Doreen i think he could not use him as he had pitched two days in a row, he didnt want to bring him in yesterday but it dictated it three days wasnt going to happen.
BBFan I think it was you that challeneged us all to say in or not in for the playoffs about a month ago would love to see who said no and they are jumping back on the bandwagon (although we will welcome you back with open arms)
Does anyone know how to contact John Henry/Theo Epstein? I really would like to send them this old WW1 song, specially the chorus, with a couple of changes.

Over There, written by George Cohan. Singer Billy Murray
Chorus – Dear Boston
Over there, over there,
Send the word, send the word over there – That the Yanks are coming,
The Yanks are coming,
The drums rum-tumming
Ev’rywhere.
So prepare, say a pray’r,
Send the word, send the word to beware.
We’ll be over, we’re coming over,
And we won’t come back till it’s over
Over there.
There a lot of discussion now about how the Yankees are using Joba now with a lot of people wanting him to throw more often, or one inning at a time, and all the “mistakes” they are making with him, etc.
Nardi Contreras is the individual who is overseeing Joba’s development and seems to be the one who is determining how Joba is going to be used (see quote below).
Nardi is one of the single most important individuals in the entire yankee organization and may be the best pitching development coach in all of baseball. When you look at what he’s done for Hughes, Joba, Horne, Zach McCallister, George Kontos, Dan McCutcheon, Kevin Whelan and on and on its simply phenomenal.
I’d trust Nardi.
“The “Joba Rules” dictate how often the 21-year-old rookie right-hander can be used, and they will be followed through the end of the season according to Nardi Contreras, the Yankees organization’s minor-league pitching coordinator.
The aim is to minimize any risk of injury after Chamberlain was shifted into the bullpen after starting all season.
“We know what we have here,” said Contreras, who accompanied Chamberlain from Triple-A Scranton to Toronto on Tuesday. “We have to be careful with his arm.”

Gayle,
It was me who challenged and I believe only fifteen said that we will make the playoffs. I posted the names on the blog at that time. I am sure it can be located.
In any case, let us all enjoy this ride. I am quite confident that we will win the division. We have two more series with Boston. If we win both series (not sweeps), we will be down only two games. Then to win the division, we need to make up three games and it is not difficult given that there are still 45 games left.
So the next 3 games Boston plays at home vs. Tampa Bay. Should be an easy sweep for the Sox right?
Well look at the pitching matchups.
Tomorrow is Shields vs. Wakefield — Shields is one of Tampa’s 2 effective starting pitchers. I wouldn’t be shocked to see Shields keep the Red Sox limping offense at bay.
Tuesday is Kazmir vs. Lester — Kazmir has continually killed the Sox over the past few years and Lester is filling the bases with walks and hits. Could Tampa take the the first 2 out of 3? It’s not out of the question.
Wednesday should be a definite Boston win Sonnastine (?) vs. Dice K.
But here’s the thing — the Sox will be home. They are coming home after using up a lot of their bullpen this weekend and losing 2 out of 3 to a team they should have swept. They sent their 3 best pitchers to the hill this weekend in Boston and lost 2 out of 3. That’s the kind of thing that can kill a team.
The Boston fans are going to be teetering on the edge of the knife and if the Sox manage to lose a home game to Tampa (which I think they will), it will get so ugly in Beantown that the team will wish they could go on the road….but they can’t, because the Angels are coming in for 4 games on Friday. Double header on Friday.
This is the week people. This is the week we need the Yanks to keep their pimp hand strong. If we keep playing hard and pitching well, we could be in first in the AL East by next Monday.
Think I’m crazy? Check back with me next Monday.
Cashman just needs to really hammer home this bullpen. It feels really unsettled. We need to bring up 1 or 2 more of the kids with the lights out stuff and see if we can ride the young guns to the division.
And if we start Karstens over Kennedy on Tuesday, I’ll be pissed.
Joe L–
Torre’s said it will be Karstens, but for whatever stupid reason, I have more faith in Karstens than everyone else seems to be giving him.
But I do think, on the whole, you’re right. This is the week, the stretch, whatever you want to call it.
The Yankees shouldn’t underestimate Baltimore, Detroit looks like it might be beginning to turn it around, though it’s too soon to tell, and Seattle’s really underrated. Still, though, there is NO real good reason we can’t win each series, if not sweep.
I don’t know what Boston’s schedule is like, but the way the Yankees have been playing, coupled with the way the Red Sox has not, gives the Yankees the intangible momentum that they need.
It’s going to be one hell of a finish.
Ganye sucks yeh!!
Too many Boston fans that are prime examples of why you can’t teach a rock to fall up.
This is exciting baseball. 5 teams battling it out for division and wild card spots. (Not counting the Angels.) This is what I always expect from the Yankees. – exciting, meaningful baseball. I say, let’s open the badnwagon, let everyone jump on, send out all the positive vibes we can — the more the merrier!!!! Win or lose, at least it’s going to be excruciatingly, painfully, exhilaratingly FUN!
Peter Gammons just said that Joba “might have the best stuff in the league, period.”
Why in the world would any team want to trade/sign a pitcher with *gag* in his name? He’s just primed for… (wait for it)…
*choking*.
But with that said, we need to win as many games as we possibly can. We do that, we can make the playoffs and then we can focus on each round.
Sometimes I feel as though admitting these deep, dark, Yankee-obsessed dreams, they will never come true. But if the Yankees keep playing like this and Boston plays to script, I really want to see Matt Damon back on Letterman in the off-season.
Boston doesn’t have that difficult a schedule coming up (except for us and the angels) so we’re going to have to keep up the pressure. It’s annoying that we need to replace Clemen’s for a start, especially when he was so effective his last start.
“resting his starters the last week of the season’? Let’s not count our chickens before they hatch.
Pete, love your comment about resting the starters. Honestly, this team is more exciting than recent years as they seem to win as a group by picking each other up and now have injected the youth of Hughes and Joba into the pitching staff to go along with Cano, Melky, Wang.
Go ANSKY!!!!!
The New York Yankees are the best in baseball and they always will be. You will see soon, we will be first in place by the end of August just like always. The Red Sox will be 2nd or 3rd in place by end of August or 1st of September. They cannot beat us. They are not the Boombers for nothin. They earned that title a long time ago.
