Game 118: Orioles at Yankees

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Aug 13, 2007 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Here is the lineup:

YANKEES
Damon DH
Jeter SS
Abreu RF
Rodriguez 3B
Matsui LF
Posasda C
Cano 2B
Betemit 1B
Cabrera CF
Wang RHP (13-6, 3.94)

Pregame chatter: The Yankees are facing Jeremy Guthrie (7-4, 3.22). He has been tough against the Yankees in two starts this season (12.1 13 4 4 4 10) … The Yankees are a curious 3-6 against the Orioles this season. … Melky Cabrera takes a 17-game hitting streak into the game. … Posada is back after a three-game absence with a stiff neck.

Thanks to my man Rod Boone, who is filling in for me today, for calling in the lineup.

Meanwhile, I leave you people alone for half a day and there are nearly 500 comments on defense. If all I did was post about A-Rod and the value (or lack of) defense in baseball, this site would outdraw Google.

But it’s great to cover a team so many people care so much about. Enjoy the game and stop cracking on Andy Phillips.

UPDATE, 9:35 p.m.: I was up in Connecticut having dinner with a friend and didn’t see any of the game until just now. But based on the box score, it seems like Chien-Ming Wang battled after the first inning and kept the Yankees in it. Good sign for him.

If Ron Villone gets through this inning, maybe it’ll be Joba in the eighth and Mo in the ninth.

Meanwhile, thanks to those who e-mailed so I could delete the racist comments. Turns out it was one twisted person using a variety of names. Best to ignore them.

UPDATE, 9:49 p.m.: This will be Joba’s first appearance at the Stadium. In talking to his Dad last week, I know seeing this will fulfill a dream of his. Mr. Chamberlain is working on coming out to see his son pitch. I’m looking forward to meeting him.

UPDATE, 9:54 p.m.: Big spot for the kid here, first time in the big ballpark in the Bronx. This will be interesting to watch.

UPDATE, 9:56 p.m.: Damn, the kid has guts. Shakes off the heater to throw his slider on a 3-2 count and fans Miggy Tejada.

UPDATE, 10:02 p.m.: Best part of that sequence by Chamberlain was how he went from clearly overthrowing to just pitching. He’s 21 and he has that figured out. There is undoubtedly going to be a rough spot or two but every game that he goes the 8th instead of the Viz is money in the bank for the Yanks.

Now he’s available Wednesday.

UPDATE, 10:17 p.m.: First blown save for Rivera since April. All typical bleeders, too. What gets interesting now is who pitches if the game goes to the 10th inning. … Lousy throw by Abreu.

UPDATE, 10:26 p.m.: The Big G comes though. Now the captain wins it.

UPDATE, 10:30 p.m.: I know that Joe Torre just wins accidentally but he’s working that DH spot very well and getting a lot out of Damon/Giambi/Duncan. … It’s funny to watch Duncan and Giambi celebrate.

I would have liked to see Giambi get in the line-up again today.

  2. Truck August 13th, 2007 at 4:12 pm

OH WOW! Jeter is starting? Fire Steinbrenner!

    Wait… I think I messed that up.

I hope the Yanks continue to roll. It’s just fun when they win.

  3. Rebecca August 13th, 2007 at 4:12 pm

Great to see Posada back in the line up.

“Rod Boone”? Sounds like a costar of Chest Rockwell’s.

  6. The First Day of the Yankees Dynasty August 13th, 2007 at 4:18 pm

    Pete,
Any ideas on what kind of injury is bothering Wang (other than the finger and nail problem)? His last 5 to 6 starts have been absolutely astrocious with the exception of that Kansas City game.

  7. wood is good August 13th, 2007 at 4:19 pm

Did anyone out there hear Michael “Special” Kay yesterday, during the game, mention a ceremony tonight commemorating A-Rod’s 500th homerun (with a fan giveaway too), and that tonight’s game would start at 7:15? I woulda swore I heard him mention this….

  8. dontfirecash August 13th, 2007 at 4:20 pm

Wilson at 1B…I guess Joe reads the comments.

  9. Adam August 13th, 2007 at 4:20 pm

The only injury bothering Wang is an aversion to striking people out.

  10. Rebecca August 13th, 2007 at 4:21 pm

wood is good: I heard the same.

  11. Sara August 13th, 2007 at 4:23 pm

    Pete,
I agree with you about Phillips. I love him. There is no need to look for a better first baseman this year. He is doing all they ask..do the Yankees really need another bat in that line-up?
As for Wang, he’ll bounce back just fine. I am not sure how his last 5 starts could be considered atrocious. The guy has won 13 games. Has he been a little off? Yes. Can you call it atrocious? I don’t thnk so.

  12. wood is good August 13th, 2007 at 4:23 pm

Thanks for that, Rebecca–I asked Pete about it and he says the media were not informed of this, so he didn’t know anything about it. But my ears rarely deceive me. Guess I’ll find out tonight!

  13. Bob Michaels August 13th, 2007 at 4:25 pm

Andy Phillips is great on defense, I thought he would hit for more power. He will get in the game in the 6th inning when the yankees have the lead.

  14. Bob Michaels August 13th, 2007 at 4:26 pm

Any news on the 2007 unsigned draft picks?

  15. Dr. Acula August 13th, 2007 at 4:28 pm

    Anyone in Boston?

How’s the Gagne bloodbath going up there ??

  16. Munson15 August 13th, 2007 at 4:29 pm

Andy Philips rocks! Anyone who is complaining about him has 1) probably never played a sport, and 2) is an ignorant fan who should shut up and appreciate what a hard working and important commodity a player like Andy is to a championship ballclub. It seems to me that a great number of very important hits and defensive plays have been produced by some of these players over the years (Boone, Sojo, etc.) that will never make an absurd amount of money. Appreciate them before the Yanks throw another defensive hack like Giambi at first with a huge contract.

  17. BBB (Start Kennedy!!) August 13th, 2007 at 4:31 pm

Guthrie has pitched well against us and also well in general – but the probable pitchers scouting report on the main Yanks page says he has “run into a bit of a rookie wall” lately. Let’s hope that continues tonight!

Also, hopefully the home games will help improve our play vs the Orioles. Save for the first weekend of the season, all the series we’ve played have been at their park right?

    LET’S GO YANKEES!!!

  18. Jerkface August 13th, 2007 at 4:32 pm

Munson15: That is very ignorant of you to say. There are plenty of good reasons to complain about Andy Phillips, but due to his lack of inclusion in the lineup I will refrain. Merely head back 2 posts to see the objective, if one sided, rational discussion as to why Andy Phillips should be sat down for now.

  19. Kenny August 13th, 2007 at 4:33 pm

Wang has been atrocious in the last 5 games? Looks pretty consistent to me.

Just let Tampa Bay taken even 2 out of 3 in Boston and it would be the nearest thing to that Big Dig Tunnel doing a total collapse.

  22. Matty August 13th, 2007 at 4:38 pm

    Dr. Acula:

The Gagne photoshops on Fark have been hysterical.

Man, if the Yankees turned on Farnsworth as fast as RSN turned on Gagne, he’d be pitching in Kamloops by now.

  23. hmmm August 13th, 2007 at 4:39 pm

“Anyone who is complaining about him has 1) probably never played a sport, and 2) is an ignorant fan who should shut up and appreciate what a hard working and important commodity a player like Andy is to a championship ballclub.”

    well that settles that.

i have no facts to back my argument so i’ll resort to personal attacks.

    very compelling argument.

  24. Munson15 August 13th, 2007 at 4:42 pm

Jerkface, I’m sorry if I have offended you, or anyone else on the board. My explantions for what I said is that if you have played a sport, you completely understand what it is like to have a player like Andy out there everyday, regardless of how he is producing in the lineup, cause players like Jeter and A-Rod know that if they bounce a ball in the dirt, it’ll get scooped, or a pitcher knows that they will vacuum up anything that comes their way. The Yanks are a powerhouse lineup, with 2(!) allstars sitting on the bench half the time (Giambi, and Damon). I’m just agreeing with Pete, leave the kid alone. The Yanks produce enough to be able to leave him in the lineup to figure out his swing, or lay down a few bunts here or there. As for being rational, your name is jerkface.

  25. KAJ August 13th, 2007 at 4:44 pm

Yankees Win 11-4….you can PUT IT ON THE BOARD !

  26. Jerkface August 13th, 2007 at 4:45 pm

My handle has nothing to do with rationality, although yes, that is my handle. It appears that many of the arguments for Andy phillips are based on this nebulous idea of chemistry and intangibles. How do you think A-rod felt when Ape couldnt keep his foot on first on his 2 barehanded throws?

  27. Rebecca August 13th, 2007 at 4:45 pm

    Dr. Acula–

where might I find these photoshops?

  28. KAJ August 13th, 2007 at 4:45 pm

Gagne has been sent down to AAA to work on his facial hair…

  29. Hughes Your Daddy? August 13th, 2007 at 4:45 pm

    The Saffron Risotto sounds marvelous

  30. Jerkface August 13th, 2007 at 4:46 pm

Or how Pettitte felt when Andy messed up yet another pick off? THat is the 2nd or third time Ape has failed to throw the runner out at 2nd on a Pettitte pickoff move.

  31. The First Day of the Yankees Dynasty August 13th, 2007 at 4:47 pm

    I for one fear the Orioles;
so I guess 7-2 Orioles, especially Wang has not been effective at all.

  32. randyhater August 13th, 2007 at 4:48 pm

No way a no frills, right-handed, 28-year-old rook beats us three straight. No friggin’ chance.

I’m sittin’ right field, lower deck and I’m expecting a keepsake from Wilson (Iron Horse) Betemit.

  33. Sara August 13th, 2007 at 4:52 pm

    Peter,
The Yanks are actually 4-5 against the Orioles this year. they won on 4/7 (A-Rod walkoff), 6/27, 7/27 (completion of suspended game) and 7/29.
Some people have some really negative transference going on with Andy Phillips…chill out. Did his foot coming off the bag cost the game? Has he made an error at first yet??? The yankees don’t need a power hitting first baseman. They need a good defensive first baseman and that is what Andy has been. Give the guy a break. He was on fire when he first came up a few weeks ago, so what if he is going throug a little slump…I think Abrue, Damon, Matsui, Cano are all examples that players go through slumps!!!

  34. Matty August 13th, 2007 at 4:53 pm

    Rebecca -

Go to http://www.fark.com – look on the sports tab, and look in the comments thread for today’s and yesterday’s links for Yankees games.

There’s one of Gagne in a BoSox uniform but wearing a Yankees turtleneck.

  35. rbizzler August 13th, 2007 at 4:53 pm

    Bob,
The only updates on draft pick signings are only rumor-based as the Yanks supposedly have deals in place for well above MLB’s slotting system, so they are being held up by the commish. Per various rumors, consider Weems, Suttle (3b from UTexas), Angelini (HS stud SS who turned down a scholarship from Rice) and Romine (HS catcher)as signed. Rumor is that they also have a deal in place for Brackman for close to 3 million, which is WELL above slot for the 30th pick.

Sadly, HS pitcher Greg Peavey has decided to honor his commitment to Oregon State after spending the summer in a league up near the campus (he did say that he and the Yanks were close on money though). The ambidextrous pitcher they took in the 45th round (I think) is likely headed back to school and there hasn’t been much out there on Carpenter, a pitcher who is likely headed back to college.

  36. Matty August 13th, 2007 at 4:54 pm

“I’d like to watch something else now. Maybe a comedy?”

  37. ... August 13th, 2007 at 4:55 pm

Guthrie isn’t no frills…Dude was top-notch out of Stanford and Cleveland gave him little time to prove himself.

He’s got real good stuff..throws mid 90′s with good movement and control.

If only Giambi could function adequately at first base, we could get his bat in the lineup tonight. But I like damon at the top here.

  38. hmmm August 13th, 2007 at 4:57 pm

The Yanks are actually 4-5 against the Orioles this year. they won on 4/7 (A-Rod walkoff), *6/27*, 7/27 (completion of suspended game) and 7/29.

    they lost 4-0 on 6/27

  39. Rebecca August 13th, 2007 at 4:57 pm

    Matty–

    Thank you!

BTW, as much as I’m pounding the horrific Continental ads, it could be worse…

Anybody remember the AWFUL Taylor Hicks Ford ads that would play ad nauseum on YES last year?

At least we just get Derek Jeter making awkward hand movements this year.

“He was on fire when he first came up a few weeks ago, so what if he is going throug a little slump…I think Abrue, Damon, Matsui, Cano are all examples that players go through slumps!!!”

you are confusing 2 very different situations.

when Phillips was “on fire” for a week or 2, that was the aberration. when cano, damon, matsui, and abreu slump, that is the aberration.

  43. Matty August 13th, 2007 at 5:05 pm

BTW, not to get a cheap plug or anything, but Ron and Fez will be doing drive time on K-Rock tomorrow. 3-7.

  44. eelz August 13th, 2007 at 5:06 pm

i think damon will cowboy up and try to make a case for himself now that giambi’s back. the competition between these two could really make for some great play from the both of em. when we faced guthrie in the past our lineup was just as badass… but only in theory. i think mr. guthrie is going to be made to feel a little bit more overwhelmed the third time around.

and hey, john parrish is on the mariners now! so we’re golden.

  45. Tom August 13th, 2007 at 5:07 pm

People will stop cracking on Andy Phillips when he stops hitting like a pitcher. Unless he starts playing 1st and 2nd base simultaneously, no amount of defense can make up for his .217 average and .261 SLG and sub-.300 OBP since July 28th. He has been horrible for us since a random hot stretch in July. If it was a proven hitter hitting like a pitcher, I would stick with him, but he isn’t and he hasn’t shown the ability to perform at this level on an even semi-consistent basis.

  46. hmmm August 13th, 2007 at 5:08 pm

“BTW, as much as I’m pounding the horrific Continental ads, it could be worse…”

i’m not talking about a daily regimen, or a twice daily regimen, who has time for that nonsense??

stop hiding behind those caps or pretending your hair doesn’t look bad and DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.

now, i don’t own the company. i don’t know anything about it.

all i know is this is the BEST product on the market for the appearance of your thinning hair.

hey, i’m guiseppe franco, i’m not putting my name on the line for something that doesn’t work.

  47. eelz August 13th, 2007 at 5:10 pm

haha. the best part of that is when they mention his celebrity clientele, and all of a sudden he’s hugging gary busey. it’s the most inexplicable celeb “plug” ever.

  48. JGNYC August 13th, 2007 at 5:14 pm

To those who have been pushing for Kennedy to start over Karstens tomorrow based on his minor league stats vs Karstens’s bloated MLB ERA: Karstens gave up 1 run in 2 starts (12 innings) with 10 k’s at AAA before his most recent callup this year. Let’s compare Apples to Apples.

  49. Marc August 13th, 2007 at 5:17 pm

Who is the long man tomorrow if Karstens goes less than 4innings?

  50. Ron Benbow August 13th, 2007 at 5:17 pm

    Hey, nothing against Phillips.

But if Torre is going to sit Andy against a tough, hard-throwing righty like Guthrie, I’d much prefer to see Giambi get a game every now and then at 1b.

How much more of a liability can Giambi be than Betemit, especially, if you only let either play 7 innings before replacing either with Phillips for defensive purposes?

I don’t like this routine where either Damon or Giambi has to sit every night. Together, they’re too valuable offensively to lose.

The Yankees offensive is going to hit a lull, sooner or later, and they will need both Giambi and Damon, if only because they get on base so much more often than either Betemit or Phillips.

  51. Doug S August 13th, 2007 at 5:21 pm

I think it’s ridiculous for Andy to be out of the lineup. How many throws has he dug out of the dirt to save an inning? Timely hits also. If we take his hot streak out from when he was called up we may have lost 4 of them. this 4 game BoSox lead would be 8.

  52. LathamJoe August 13th, 2007 at 5:21 pm

The facts are that the Yankees are currently WINNING with Andy Phillips at 1B and he is currently the best option that they have for the postion..so stop whining about him.

Andy is likely a career .240-.250 MLB hitter and slightly above average fielding first basemen. Torre will ride him while he’s playing well. Betemit will be their supersub of the future and will play some first. Minky will likely play some when (and if) he returns after September 1. Unless the bottom drops out and the offense needs a big boost, they are your first basemen for 2007.

  53. yankeefan August 13th, 2007 at 5:22 pm

damon has to play sometime. betemit is good enough to play a lot too. giambi can pinch hit later. it’s good that we have a lot of people to fill positions now. as the long as they keep winning, no one should be complaining (damon!).
    go yanks!

  54. Global Warming August 13th, 2007 at 5:23 pm

Betemit will be the first basemen come late September/October, you guys watch!

Andy Phillips will be spot start(Wang?)/ Defensive replacement.

Giambi will get 60/40 Playing time with the Johnny “Many teams are interested in me” Damon.

    You heard it here first!

  55. mike f August 13th, 2007 at 5:25 pm

since joba is a starter, why can’t he start for us on tuesday?

  56. eelz August 13th, 2007 at 5:27 pm

the liability of giambi at 1b is that he’ll hurt himself again. he’s a big achey sherman tank of a man.

“dont forget betemit is a 3b who used to play ss. i think he’ll be okay 1b.”

This is little consolation to me unfortunately. Betemit has next to zero experience at that position, and attempting this impromptu tryout in the middle of a playoff run makes my hair cringe. It failed miserably last year with Sheffield. First base is far too important a fielding position to be holding tryouts now.

I wont argue that Betemit might be able to handle and grow into the position, but using him here just for his bat makes little sense. I would almost rather see Giambi out there.

All it takes in the playoffs is one blown play on defense and your out. I worry that competence now might translate into a Betemit getting the position, something that gives me as much confidence as Farnsworth in the 8th. Oh I forgot, but he has ‘big arms.’ Now I can sleep, sheesh…

We should be able to get to Guthrie tonight. As most of you know he was formerly a relief pitcher. His innings are way over his usual amount so his arm must be tiring. It has shown in his last few outings, a loss of control which has equaled more walks.

  76. Doreen August 13th, 2007 at 6:00 pm

    Wood is Good -

I heard Kay say the same thing.

Chemistry and Intangibles are like Aura and Mystique — they are certainly nice to have, but they’re not always that reliable. I thought the Yankees had chemistry and intanglibles working for them for the past two seasons; unfortunately, hitting and/or pitching took the days off, and they couldn’t get the job done alone.

  77. Ed FL August 13th, 2007 at 6:01 pm

    Big Johnson
Nobody knows how good or bad Betemit will be as a first baseman. He has never played 1st base at the ML level. However, he has played first base at the Dominican Republic winterleague. Maybe that’s why the Yankees consider playing him at first base tonight. We’ll see if he is at least ” average “

  78. Doreen August 13th, 2007 at 6:01 pm

By the way — I must have missed something. What is the signficance of Saffron Risotto?????

  79. Bob Michaels August 13th, 2007 at 6:03 pm

Mentz will not be back in 08, if necessary cut him if the Yanks have to ad a player to the 25 and 40 man come playoff time.

  80. Rebecca August 13th, 2007 at 6:05 pm

    Doreen–

If you watch the games on YES, there are these really annoying commercials for Continental Airlines, where this really obnoxious guy does things like asks a hot dog vendor for saffron risotto and asks the usher at the opera he’d like to watch a comedy now…

I think people were making fun of it and the Yankees Bullpen, now that we have Joba, Viz and Mo ;) (please, correct me if I’m wrong!)

  81. Matty August 13th, 2007 at 6:05 pm

    Doreen:

Saffron Risotto is a magical food that gives the Yankees the power of WIN~!

“Betemit has next to zero experience at that position, and attempting this impromptu tryout in the middle of a playoff run makes my hair cringe. It failed miserably last year with Sheffield. First base is far too important a fielding position to be holding tryouts now”

He’s played First Base in Winter ball.

This is not a 37 year old Sheffield experimenting at First Base with 1 week left in the season. Betemit has the tools and time to play the position well.

Hey, I know it’s a stretch, but couldn’t we have Giambi at first for 6-7 innings and then bring in Phillips? I know he can’t throw, but he is OK on low throw scoops etc. at first!! Or, maybe Damon at first and Giambi as DH. Betemit is OK, but very new playing first. Just idle thoughts here by a Yank Fanatic.

  87. Big Johnson August 13th, 2007 at 6:17 pm

“He’s played First Base in Winter ball.

I should have qualified my statement with ‘at the big league level.’ I also have first base experience, and at this rate, may try out for the position. :)

    BJ

  88. Doreen August 13th, 2007 at 6:21 pm

    Thanks, Rebecca. And Matty.

That IS an annoying commercial. Most of them are! I don’t really get the connection with Joba, Viz and Mo (except maybe sound alike??), but I don’t want to ruin a talisman, so I’ll leave it at that. :)

  93. Rebecca August 13th, 2007 at 6:32 pm

Steve Phillips just makes me laugh. However, Simpsons > Steve Phillips, so I’m watching the Simpsons till 7.

  94. LCâ„¢ August 13th, 2007 at 6:36 pm

I keep laughing when I hear people say Boston has nothing to worry about. Um, are you kidding? I know their team is good on paper, but letting a 14 game lead shrivel down to 4 games is extremely troublesome.

  95. SJ44 August 13th, 2007 at 6:49 pm

Steve Phillips is amazing. His big declaration today is, “The Yankees won’t make the playoffs”. He picks the Mariners because, “of their pitching”.

He cites the Yankees pitching as being in the “middle of the pack”. I guess he doesn’t count the fact that its a different pitching staff with the additions of Hughes and Chamberlain, the emergence of Vizcaino (I guess having an ERA of just over 1 for three months isn’t good enough) and the re-emergence of Moose (4-0 in his last 4 starts) as a dependable starter.

So, in Phillips world, a pitching staff that has Aramis Ramirez, Jeff Weaver in its rotation is better than the Yankees starting staff. Wow, is all I can say.

I get the whole, “I have to have a contrarian viewpoint” thing. However, this guy used to be a GM in MLB.

With opinions like that, he couldn’t get a job folding towels in a ML locker room.

Its my fault though. I keep hoping to hear some logical baseball talk on ESPN. Unfortunately, its all agenda setting gibberish and stupidity. What a shame.

  96. Matty August 13th, 2007 at 6:52 pm

ESPN has been gibberish, stupidity, and shame ever since Obermann left. Where have you been?

I got two words for you: Joe Morgan.

I got two more words for you: Who’s Now.

I got even more words for you: Rachel Nichols.

(well, that’s not a bad thing, but I just wanted to get a cheap Rachel Nichols joke in there. My game show idea: Make Rachel Blink)

  97. KAJ August 13th, 2007 at 6:52 pm

Steve Phillips is an @$$ !

  98. Rebecca August 13th, 2007 at 6:55 pm

OK…Karsten is a rotten Apple who has proven THIS YEAR to stink up in the majors…Kennedy is a GREEN Apple who has not yet been even seen my any major league hitters this year…which APPLE do you think has the better chance of succeeding ? Hmmmmm ???

  100. Ron August 13th, 2007 at 6:56 pm

    Hurray! Betemit!

    BOOOOOO!!!!!! Damon!!

    BOOOOOO!!!!!! No Giambi!

This sums up my feelings on tonight’s lineup.

  101. Matty August 13th, 2007 at 6:56 pm

    Rebecca –

The Mets. Phillips left in a sexual harassment mess. Ironically, he takes over for a guy who leaves in an alleged sexual harassment mess.

  102. Bronx Born August 13th, 2007 at 6:58 pm

    Rebecca

Phillips GMed the Mets into subzero and lost out on ARod which is why he hates Alex so much. The guy is a total jerk an just fits in with the ESPN imbeciles perfectly.

  103. Chris August 13th, 2007 at 6:59 pm

The only people who bash Andy Phillips are the No Maas idiots who never played baseball. They are never happy about anyone. A bunch of miserable stat geeks who make me embarrassed to be a fan. They are never pleased unless the Yankees beat everyone 20-0.

    Go Andy!

  104. stewman August 13th, 2007 at 6:59 pm

Just wanted to point out a stat for any of you who just saw Steve Phillips’ analysis of why the Red Sox will make the playoffs and the Yanks will fail once the offense disappears.
He points to Boston’s strong pitching prevailing vs. the Yankees weak pitching with an outburst(mind you it’s lasted a very long time) of offense supporting it.
Meanwhile the Red Sox have posted a team ERA of 4.26 since the ASB and the Yanks have a 4.53. Gotta love the garbage they put on air, we’ve come along way since the beginning of the season and I’m ready for October.

  105. Rebecca August 13th, 2007 at 7:00 pm

    Thanks much.

Just another reason to like the Yankees more!

  106. Josh August 13th, 2007 at 7:01 pm

Looks like the Red Sox are turning to their young fireballer. On NESN’s pre-game they announced that Clay Bucholz will start one of Friday’s doubleheader against LAA.

That’s probaly one of the worst teams to play in your debut!

  107. Boston Yankee August 13th, 2007 at 7:01 pm

props stewman. good job that pleases me

“OK…Karsten is a rotten Apple who has proven THIS YEAR to stink up in the majors…Kennedy is a GREEN Apple who has not yet been even seen my any major league hitters this year…which APPLE do you think has the better chance of succeeding ? Hmmmmm ???”

Considering that most young pitchers struggle when they come up from the minors, the answer is Karstens.

But Yankees fans are greedy after Chamberlain and Hughes. They expect everyone nowto come up and be awesome which is both silly and not fair. And even Hughes is still adjusting to the majors with two bad starts.

  111. Rebecca August 13th, 2007 at 7:02 pm

    …..Who else just saw that?

And do we have an opinion on the artwork?

  112. Matty August 13th, 2007 at 7:03 pm

    MAH GOD! THE SCULPTURE!!

  113. Joeysdadjoe August 13th, 2007 at 7:03 pm

    I guess

  114. Matty August 13th, 2007 at 7:03 pm

The artwork is horrific. It looks like something someone would get at a Bar Mitzvah. I mean, GLavine got Jetskis, for goodness’ sake.

  115. LCâ„¢ August 13th, 2007 at 7:04 pm

I laughed SO hard when that sculpture fell.

  116. Joeysdadjoe August 13th, 2007 at 7:04 pm

I gues I could crack on Josh Phelps

  117. Matty August 13th, 2007 at 7:05 pm

How great would it be if Jeter just clobbered A-Rod over the head with the plate and then revealed A-Rod was wearing a Bosox jersey?

  118. LCâ„¢ August 13th, 2007 at 7:06 pm

God, they had to wrap it up with a Christina Aguilera song?
    Jeezuz.
The Jeter thing was cute though.

  119. Matty August 13th, 2007 at 7:06 pm

When the sculpture fell, I only had one reaction…

    “GOODNESS GRACIOUS!”

  120. Ron August 13th, 2007 at 7:06 pm

    Matty:

The odds of that happening are about the same as the odds of Bobby Abreu pulling an Aaron Rowand face-cruncher.

  121. Jeff NJ August 13th, 2007 at 7:06 pm

That was very nice. Looks like the Yankees will pull out all the stops to get A Rod to stay a Yankee. Smart move.

  122. Jim Johnson August 13th, 2007 at 7:06 pm

A-Rod must be so embarassed right now.

Those paintings and that sculpture look ridiculous. I can pretty much guarantee those are going straight into storage.

They look like Andy Warhol paintings.

  123. Rudy August 13th, 2007 at 7:07 pm

those paintings were pritty bad and the sculpture wasn’t much better and i laughed really hard when it fell

  124. Jamie CT August 13th, 2007 at 7:08 pm

that would be your wildest dreams huh Matty? Go back to RSN homo

  125. gayle August 13th, 2007 at 7:08 pm

I expect better from the Yankees. That ceremony was pure lame the only cool thing was home plate

  126. Rebecca August 13th, 2007 at 7:09 pm

Arod likes modern art though, so I hope that’s working for him right now.

Other than that, who wants to create an ARod jet ski fund? :-P

  127. Ava August 13th, 2007 at 7:09 pm

    Oh. My. Wow…

  128. Jamie CT August 13th, 2007 at 7:09 pm

what was with all of the rainbow colors? I feel like some hobo in the bronx could have done a better job or at least a comparable one

  129. Hello August 13th, 2007 at 7:09 pm

Uhm the Yankees could have kept that little ceremony to themselves….oh well it’s the thought that counts I guess.

  130. Doreen August 13th, 2007 at 7:09 pm

That’s Peter Maxx’s work. That’s his signature style.

It was funny when the sculpture fell.

Well, how can A-Rod opt-out now????? It would seem very ungracious.

  131. Ron August 13th, 2007 at 7:09 pm

Wang needs a nice long outing to get back on track. Being at home will probably help.

  132. Jamie CT August 13th, 2007 at 7:09 pm

Rebecca – he does? I did not know that

  133. Jeff NJ August 13th, 2007 at 7:10 pm

Ok someone has to take the upbeat position. I thought the sculpture was cool. The paintings likeness was outstanding, although I wish it showed him swinging a bat or something more baseball like than standing around staring at the camera. Good for the Yankees and good for us fans that we are just slightly closer to keeping A Rod now.

  134. Mike August 13th, 2007 at 7:10 pm

Hold on, what’s all this painting and sculpture stuff? What am I missing?

  135. Stef August 13th, 2007 at 7:11 pm

Yikes — the likeness of Alex on the paintings was nice, but those colors??!! Very much like yard sale items. Poor Alex. Those aren’t going on the walls in his posh home, that’s for sure. And that “sculpture”…words can’t do it justice.

  136. Jeff NJ August 13th, 2007 at 7:12 pm

Anyone remember when Phil Rizzuto was knocked over by the “Holy Cow” they brought out on Phil Rizzuto day. That was hilarious.

  138. Stef August 13th, 2007 at 7:12 pm

    Doreen,

Maybe Peter Maxx is someone Alex already collects? That might explain the choice by the Yanks.

  139. Andrea August 13th, 2007 at 7:13 pm

Jim Johnson: that is insulting to Andy Warhol.

  140. Ron August 13th, 2007 at 7:17 pm

Fear Factor: Wang was solid for the for six innings, then imploded.

  141. David August 13th, 2007 at 7:18 pm

Why is Peter Max considered a good artist?

  142. Ron August 13th, 2007 at 7:18 pm

    Wait, wrong start. Never mind.

  143. Ron August 13th, 2007 at 7:19 pm

Somehow I forgot you just like to predict that the Yankees will lose every single game.

  144. Ron August 13th, 2007 at 7:20 pm

That’s not a good start. Come on Wang, find the release point.

  145. mel August 13th, 2007 at 7:20 pm

    Let’s go, Wang!

  146. David August 13th, 2007 at 7:21 pm

    Wow

  147. David August 13th, 2007 at 7:21 pm

Why do I think Phillips should be playing 1st tonight?

  148. Paddy R August 13th, 2007 at 7:22 pm

guess wang figures since he doesn’t have the turf to let everything roll to the wall this time, he should just put it on a tee and let them get it there by air tonight.

  149. KAJ August 13th, 2007 at 7:22 pm

what the HALE ? does the Wanger even know that the runners are allowed to steal ? the jump that guy got was stupid !

  150. David August 13th, 2007 at 7:23 pm

    Triple play time.

  151. mel August 13th, 2007 at 7:24 pm

    What’s wrong with Wang?

  152. Jeremy August 13th, 2007 at 7:24 pm

Maybe Wang is trying to give up some sort of pitching cycle?

  153. Ron August 13th, 2007 at 7:24 pm

Can we please start over? This isn’t fair.

  154. David August 13th, 2007 at 7:24 pm

Okay, who took Wang and replaced him with something else?

  155. KAJ August 13th, 2007 at 7:24 pm

do ya THINK the Wanger is off his game tonight ? this is just sick….he looks totally rattled ! this is the 1st dang inning dude ! What happened to the calm kid we have all come to know and love…I shudder to think what Tejada is going to do… WHAT IS GOING ON ? This looks like IGAWA !!! Get Karstens Up ….NOW !!!

  156. Ron August 13th, 2007 at 7:25 pm

DANG…and Kennedy IS pitching tonight for Scranton, so there goes THAT idea !

  164. Josh August 13th, 2007 at 7:27 pm

In Wang’s defense, Posada should have blocked that ball.

  165. Jeremy August 13th, 2007 at 7:27 pm

I’d like to watch a different baseball game now. How about one where Wang gets a 1-2-3 inning?

  166. Brian C August 13th, 2007 at 7:27 pm

Wang has been crap for a while now. Igawa like, minus the home runs.

  167. CA Yanks Fan August 13th, 2007 at 7:27 pm

  168. jennifer August 13th, 2007 at 7:27 pm

They need to pull Kennedy from his start. Wang doesn’t look right, and it looks as though we’ll see Jeff tonight.

  169. Doreen August 13th, 2007 at 7:28 pm

Stef, since art is a very personal taste, I would hope they consulted with A-Rod when they had the idea of commissioning the work.

JeffNJ — I agree with you – after they unveiled the portrait-style, I thought they second painting would show a swing, or a stance or something like that.

  170. Andrea August 13th, 2007 at 7:28 pm

  172. Ron August 13th, 2007 at 7:29 pm

Smith do you have a rock you can crawl back under?

Doreen at least they didn’t give him material things unlike the Mets. They gave Alex some interesting items. I would guess they spoke with his wife. Maybe?

  179. Matty August 13th, 2007 at 7:30 pm

Wow, I leave and someone calls me a homo?

    Couple of things -

I’ve seen Peter Max’s work. Usually it’s very good. What the Yankees gave a-rod was EMBARASSING. There is just no other word to describe it. That sculpture is something that should go into a 10-year-old’s “Big Boy” room, rather than someone who is making 25mm/year.

If you didn’t see the “art”, this link is a pretty good representation:

  181. Boston Yankee August 13th, 2007 at 7:30 pm

  184. David August 13th, 2007 at 7:31 pm

    You can’t win them all.

    Wang will be fine. Jeez.

  185. jennifer August 13th, 2007 at 7:31 pm

All things considered we are lucky he got out only giving up 3. Hopefully he will settle down and we will have finally figured out this pitcher.

  186. Jeremy August 13th, 2007 at 7:31 pm

Let’s just hope he settled down. Two straight groundball outs, including a GIDP, is promising.

I never thought I’d say this but Wang is killing us!

  188. Ron August 13th, 2007 at 7:31 pm

I didn’t know that Kennedy was starting tonight. Well, hopefully Wang will hold him from here. A couple months ago, I think we would have worried about the Yankees offense not scoring runs but now I’m confident they’ll score a bunch and they’re off to a good start with Damon.

  195. CA Yanks Fan August 13th, 2007 at 7:32 pm

    YEAH Johnny!

  196. jp August 13th, 2007 at 7:32 pm

this, quite simply is why wang will never be a true ace. Phil hughes, Joba chamberlain, yes, but wang a resounding no. He doesnt miss enough bats to be a legit number one

  197. BBB August 13th, 2007 at 7:33 pm

Yeah they need to pull Kennedy from his start – we might need him! The SWB game is still in warmup right?

  198. Matty August 13th, 2007 at 7:33 pm

I think Wang is still in shock over the crap they gave A-Rod

  199. Jeremy August 13th, 2007 at 7:33 pm

I really hope Damon starts hitting lots of doubles so I don’t cringe when I see his name, and not Giambi’s, in the DH spot.

  200. Boston Yankee August 13th, 2007 at 7:33 pm

im watching bronx is burning on espn2 and the yanks on my computer its kind of strange

  201. KAJ August 13th, 2007 at 7:33 pm

Ron & Smith both….everybody put their fingers in ears and say together…..LA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA…..LOL !

  202. jennifer August 13th, 2007 at 7:34 pm

Lets just ignore the idiot. He will get bored and run and play in traffic.

  203. Andrea August 13th, 2007 at 7:34 pm

SMITH: i was referring to the DP. seeing Wang get someone to ground into a DP, especially Millar, is encouraging. We like to be optimistic around here, especially a choice few of us (are you with me Jennifer!?!) so we find the joy in the little things. Seeing Wang get his DP is a good event!

Where’s BBB? She must have been trash talking Johnny Damon. I haven’t been, and he’s been doing pretty well.

  204. Ron August 13th, 2007 at 7:35 pm

No, but what he was last year is still a very valuable pitcher. And before this latest rough patch, he was the same pitcher he was last year.

Wang is very good. He’s not going to consistently dominate. But he isn’t this imposter either.

  205. Matty August 13th, 2007 at 7:35 pm

    Jennifer:

    Words hurt!

Amen, brother…we are only chasing 3 and we will get 1 or 2 this inning…here come DA BATS !!!

  207. Matty August 13th, 2007 at 7:35 pm

    3-1!

  208. jennifer August 13th, 2007 at 7:35 pm

Yep of course i’m with you!!

Also please lets all ignore this Smith idiot. He just wants to get under our skin.

See now we are down only by 2. :D

  209. Ron August 13th, 2007 at 7:36 pm

This is like that White Sox game.

  210. Jeff NJ August 13th, 2007 at 7:36 pm

There’s one back. Welcome to th Bronx, Orioles. Hope you weren’t sitting on those 3 runs.

  211. Boston Yankee August 13th, 2007 at 7:37 pm

okay so were on the board lets do this

  212. The Monk August 13th, 2007 at 7:37 pm

I always find it disturbing if the pitchers lack any swing-and-miss strikes. Wang faced six hitters, no swing-and-miss strikes. When Mooooooooose has a similar result, it means he’s gonna get rocked.

What happened to that slider that made him look like Johan Santana against the Mess?

One start (or two) does not make a collapse, but if he doesn’t straighten out like that game in May he lost to the Angels (3 in the first, nothing in the next 7; Yanks honked 3-1), I’ll start getting worried.

And even if Wang has the pitching hiccups, Steve Phillips is a crackhead. If the M’s win the wild card and the Yanks are golfing on 10/1, the fact remains that no one in his right mind would actually PICK anyone who is even with the Yanks at this point to outpace them over the next 45 (or 47 for the M’s) games.

  213. BBB August 13th, 2007 at 7:37 pm

LOL Andrea…yeah I smacked Johnny around a little bit before the game. Gotta keep him motivated, ya know! ;)

Meanwhile it is nice to see the wild pitch occur in our favor for once!

  214. Ron August 13th, 2007 at 7:37 pm

    BLACK SEATS!

  215. KAJ August 13th, 2007 at 7:38 pm

  216. BBB August 13th, 2007 at 7:38 pm

    that’ll helpl!

  218. LCâ„¢ August 13th, 2007 at 7:38 pm

LOL well that was quick. I knew they would hit Guthrie. We just need Wang to hold the Orioles down.

  219. mel August 13th, 2007 at 7:38 pm

    Nice, Bobby.

  220. jennifer August 13th, 2007 at 7:38 pm

    3-2 now!!!

  221. KAJ August 13th, 2007 at 7:39 pm

oops…not quite…A-Rod will park one to make me right though…here it comes, trolls !

  222. Ron August 13th, 2007 at 7:39 pm

  224. Jeremy August 13th, 2007 at 7:39 pm

  225. Ron August 13th, 2007 at 7:39 pm

And that is how an above-average shortstop ranges, Derek.

  226. Boston Yankee August 13th, 2007 at 7:39 pm

bbb homegirl whats going on!!! johnny damon sucks!!! i admit i trashed him earlier but hes back

  227. Andrea August 13th, 2007 at 7:40 pm

Is it weird that I want Giambi to homer more so that I can see Shelley Duncan’s excitement than for the runs scored?

I get the feeling Smith might go away soon.

  228. Boston Yankee August 13th, 2007 at 7:41 pm

guys ron is alright he makes mature valid points. we should encourage guys like him to come on. guys they just caught son of sam… ILL!

  229. Ron August 13th, 2007 at 7:41 pm

I want Shelley to be celebrating his own home runs and not Andy Phillips’ sacrifice flies.

  230. gayle August 13th, 2007 at 7:41 pm

Ron– Derek Jeter makes that play in his sleep that play is his signature play.

  231. BBB August 13th, 2007 at 7:42 pm

Boston Yankee, I think that’s the whole thing! He’s back BECAUSE we talked trash about him…nothing like a little reverse psychology. That Johnny Damon is useless! ;)

  232. Andrea August 13th, 2007 at 7:43 pm

Boston Yankee: BBB and I figured out that the more we talk crap about Johnny Damon the better he does. so HE’S A BUM!

  233. YanksFanLV August 13th, 2007 at 7:43 pm

    2 words. slug fest

  234. Ron August 13th, 2007 at 7:43 pm

Gayle: pay attention to the position on the grass. That’s farther than the Blake play yesterday.

I want the real Wang back.

  235. Boston Yankee August 13th, 2007 at 7:43 pm

has anyone else noticed that damons arm has gotten atleast 10 percent better in left?

  236. The First Day of the Yankees Dynasty August 13th, 2007 at 7:44 pm

putting the team in a hole from the start, Wang has been consistent all right – consistently astrocious, that is. at this point there isn’t a difference between him and igawa.

  237. Ryan August 13th, 2007 at 7:44 pm

Lets go Wang, they got you some more runs!

  238. Andrea August 13th, 2007 at 7:44 pm

I want Shelley Duncan to be my boyfriend. But I think I’d have to wear a helmet on our dates.

  239. Boston Yankee August 13th, 2007 at 7:45 pm

lol i know i read the blog daily. i know your scheme but keep it on the dl he may hear about it. the optimistic club is back in force

    time for a DP!

  241. Rebecca August 13th, 2007 at 7:46 pm

…I really hope Wang isn’t hurt, and yes, I know I’m really late.

  242. Ron August 13th, 2007 at 7:47 pm

Keep them off the board. Groundballs are good.

  243. Ron August 13th, 2007 at 7:48 pm

    Melky saving Wang’s ass.

  244. Andrea August 13th, 2007 at 7:48 pm

We don’t need no stinking Gagne!

    I love you Melky!

  245. Jeff NJ August 13th, 2007 at 7:49 pm

Melkman! Like to see Caca Crispy catch that one. Not happenning.

  246. Alias August 13th, 2007 at 7:49 pm

Wasn’t Wang having issues with his fingernail splitting? I wonder if that’s what’s bothering him?

  247. Rebecca August 13th, 2007 at 7:50 pm

    Tienes leche?

  248. Andrea August 13th, 2007 at 7:50 pm

Boston Yankee: we’re descrete. Johnny won’t know a think ;)

  249. Ron August 13th, 2007 at 7:50 pm

Ugh. God Betemit has no business playing first.

  250. Batty August 13th, 2007 at 7:50 pm

Gameday question – does the trajectory of the pitches not work at Yankee stadium?

  251. kasey August 13th, 2007 at 7:50 pm

Love to hear a defense of wang now. second straight start he has done his best to take his team out of the game early. get karstens up.

  252. Jeff NJ August 13th, 2007 at 7:51 pm

I get the feeling Wang is shutting them down the rest of the day. My prediction, an 8-4 win.

  253. YanksFanLV August 13th, 2007 at 7:52 pm

Historically (i’m to lazy to look up the stats) Wang has struggled in the first and then settled down to pitch a heck of a game. 3 runs is nothing for our offense to overcome right now. No biggie.

  254. Jeff NJ August 13th, 2007 at 7:52 pm

Oh and I predict the moron trolls will be gone by 9.

  255. The First Day of the Yankees Dynasty August 13th, 2007 at 7:53 pm

I think we should blame this bad start on A Rod. That ceremony crap is messing up the rhyme of the team, and it made the Orioles want to beat/hate us even more!

  256. Rebecca August 13th, 2007 at 7:54 pm

    Welcome back, Jorge

wow, Robbie Cano in his last 107 ab’s hitting .458. If he could remember how to hit in the first half he could easily win some batting titles.

  259. Ron August 13th, 2007 at 7:55 pm

Cano seemed unable to believe that he’d actually struck out.

Park one in the upper deck and shut up the detractors, Willy.

  260. Boston Yankee August 13th, 2007 at 7:56 pm

okay bronx is burning is over. REGGIE REGGIE

  261. passer by August 13th, 2007 at 7:56 pm

Sure, Wang is not his usual self. But, Other than the Roberts double in the first inning, he wasn’t as bad as his line suggests. My concern is that he looked tense in the first inning. I thought Wang could never get nervous.

  262. Ron August 13th, 2007 at 7:57 pm
  263. LCâ„¢ August 13th, 2007 at 7:57 pm

  276. Global Warming August 13th, 2007 at 7:59 pm

I’ll say it again, Betemits offense Vs Right handed pitchers cannot be ignored. Start him over Phillips at 1st fulltime or a the very least platoon them.

  277. metro August 13th, 2007 at 8:00 pm

Too bad we need a 1B that has average defense but can’t get the ball past the warning track according to Porky.

  278. The First Day of the Yankees Dynasty August 13th, 2007 at 8:00 pm

We’ll at least 10 more runs.

  279. Ron August 13th, 2007 at 8:00 pm

GW is absolutely right. Although I’d platoon Betemit and Shelley.

  280. ramar August 13th, 2007 at 8:01 pm

.250 BA with 6 RBI and no HR in 40 AB’s.

    Last 3 years for PHillips it’s .186 BA in 102 AB’s.

    It’s a pretty easy choice.

    SMITH, where did ya go? ;__;

  290. kasey August 13th, 2007 at 8:03 pm

By the way, wang is still the DEFACTO ace of the staff. but let’s stop pretending he’s pitching well. he has not looked great in over a month. thank god for the offense. he clearly can not be counted on to shut teams down right now.

  291. ramar August 13th, 2007 at 8:04 pm

    Or a terminal illness?

I’m sorry, SMITH. You have… Markakis.

    Andrea–ROFLMAO!

  318. Matty August 13th, 2007 at 8:11 pm

BTW, why do we care that Ethan Hawke will be on centerstage? I mean, has he done anything relevant in the last 5 years outside of Training Day?

I’d rather watch an hour of Michael Kay smelling Jeter’s glove.

  319. This Year August 13th, 2007 at 8:11 pm

Kennedy has piched 4 shutout innings. His era is now 0.86. Sure glad we have the more experienced Karstens on the mound tomorrow night. If I could rule the Yankee world…

  320. Andrea August 13th, 2007 at 8:11 pm

I love when Mrs. and Mr. Jeter are in the stands. They’re like, typical American. They’re so cute.

  325. Ron August 13th, 2007 at 8:13 pm

Jeff Karstens is indescribably bad. I really miss Rasner. He wasn’t a great pitcher, but he was the definition of a reliable 5/ spot starter.

  334. Boston Yankee August 13th, 2007 at 8:16 pm

id take a two runner right here

  335. BBB August 13th, 2007 at 8:16 pm

LOL, you guys are killin me with the Markakis stuff!

  336. jennifer August 13th, 2007 at 8:16 pm

Boston how do you know for a fact?

I know for a fact that Mussina does, although that shouldn’t be a suprise considering how hateful Kay is of him.

  337. Boston Yankee August 13th, 2007 at 8:16 pm

    those paintings suck

  338. Matty August 13th, 2007 at 8:16 pm

    Markakis… for that not-so-fresh feeling.

  339. dontfirecash August 13th, 2007 at 8:16 pm

yeah sterling is loving those paintings…”he really captured his look”

  340. BBB August 13th, 2007 at 8:17 pm

I heard Shelley Duncan doesn’t like Michael Kay either.

  341. ramar August 13th, 2007 at 8:17 pm

    No A-Bomb from A-Rod

  342. Ron August 13th, 2007 at 8:17 pm

Meh. More 0s, Wang. The 1st inning was just a hiccup and a ton of bad luck.

  343. Matty August 13th, 2007 at 8:17 pm

    GIEUSEPPE FRANCO!!!!!!

  344. Matty August 13th, 2007 at 8:18 pm

Shelley Duncan will have Michael Kay liquidated. “He was insolent.”

  345. ramar August 13th, 2007 at 8:18 pm

How does Kay keep this job?

  346. Boston Yankee August 13th, 2007 at 8:18 pm

jennifer: michael told a story about how he asked jeter how it felt to have all those guys he played with playing in the old timers-game. Michael kay said he was flabergasted that jeter said “im not old!” then walked away.

i mean that might not be hate but hes obviously a nuisance

  347. migames August 13th, 2007 at 8:18 pm

I heard that Michael Kay is allowed to live because Shelley Duncan doesn’t kill women

  348. Ron August 13th, 2007 at 8:19 pm

ramar: If Joe Morgan is employed, than Michael Kay doesn’t have to worry about job security.

  349. KAJ August 13th, 2007 at 8:19 pm

this just in,,,Wakefield has a No-No through 4 whole innings…MLB has made a new rule that THIS OCCURANCE pushes the Boston Lead over the Yankees all the way back to 14.5 games….DANG !…and I thought we had a chance to complete the comeback…oh, well there is always next year….

  350. Boston Yankee August 13th, 2007 at 8:19 pm

really bbb? tell me what you know. and lol to the last two things matty said

  351. dontfirecash August 13th, 2007 at 8:20 pm

    Cowboy down

  352. jennifer August 13th, 2007 at 8:20 pm

I heard Posada can’t stand looking at Kay. :P

  353. Andrea August 13th, 2007 at 8:20 pm

ok, I’m not even saying this to be funny–but how much does Michael Kay ACTUALLY sound like the Saffron Risoto guy?

  354. Jeff NJ August 13th, 2007 at 8:21 pm

BOSTON CAN ONLY SCORE ONE RUN AGAINST TAMPA BAY!!!! NOW THAT IS PATHETIC!

  355. Ron August 13th, 2007 at 8:21 pm

Wang probably could have gotten the DP. Maybe a mistake there.

  356. jennifer August 13th, 2007 at 8:21 pm

Wow Wang you had the out at second!

  357. KAJ August 13th, 2007 at 8:21 pm

Michael Kay is a complete jerk…He shows no emotion when the Yankees hit a home run or something GOOD happens for them, but when the other team turns a double play or hits a home run, he sounds SO VERY HAPPY ! He needs to go announe for Boston, I never have the volume up when I hear that ICEHOLE…he is a modern version of the ever annoying Howard Cosell…….

  358. dontfirecash August 13th, 2007 at 8:22 pm

wang had a brain cramp on that one.

  359. Rebecca August 13th, 2007 at 8:22 pm

    Andrea…just a little….

Wang should have had a DP there.

  360. KAJ August 13th, 2007 at 8:22 pm

and the Wanger did NOT throw to 2nd on that one because ???? DANG ~

  361. Ron August 13th, 2007 at 8:22 pm

The only good thing I can say about Kay is that he is not a homer.

  362. Matty August 13th, 2007 at 8:23 pm

Andrea – I used to work in radio so I’m very good with voices. They don’t sound alike. Saffron Risotto guy is kind of effitte. Kay is a lot of things, but femme is not one of them.

Does anyone see the similarity between Joe Morgan and the Hamburgular in the mcdonald’s ads?

  363. Andrea August 13th, 2007 at 8:23 pm

Smith: say what you want about the Yankees, but don’t be racist.

  364. J. V. - Yonkers August 13th, 2007 at 8:23 pm

Just give Shelley Duncan the green light and he could build the new Stadium by himself in time to open in ’08.

  365. CA Yanks Fan August 13th, 2007 at 8:23 pm

Smith, you are way out of line. Keep that garbage out of here.

  366. Boston Yankee August 13th, 2007 at 8:23 pm

aright thats it ive had a enough. racism is not allowed. that is despicable. get the ffffffffff out

  367. Matty August 13th, 2007 at 8:24 pm

    Uh Smith?

Being annoying is one thing, being racist is another. Especially considering that your “savior” coming into this year was Dice-K.

  368. Ron August 13th, 2007 at 8:24 pm

    Come on, one more.

  369. jennifer August 13th, 2007 at 8:25 pm

Just email Pete. This is getting out of control.

  370. KAJ August 13th, 2007 at 8:25 pm

    SMITH

    WAKEFIELD WITH A NO-HITTER THROUGH 5 INNINGS!

AND THE YANKS HAVE CHINK MINK WANK

..sometimes the medication works, and sometimes it doesn’t…

  371. Andrea August 13th, 2007 at 8:25 pm

Ok. I guess maybe saffron risoto and Kay are both just super annoying and that’s the similarity. my bad.

  372. Boston Yankee August 13th, 2007 at 8:25 pm

aright im writing an email to pete im all for freedom of speech so if you want to be an idiot and make a fool of yourself on this blog fine. but racial slurs are not okay

  373. LCâ„¢ August 13th, 2007 at 8:25 pm

    niyeeeeeeece

  374. Rebecca August 13th, 2007 at 8:25 pm

At least Yankee fans never have to resort to racist BS.

One run works just fine for us.

  375. LCâ„¢ August 13th, 2007 at 8:26 pm

    Pete can ban posters, right?

  376. Ron August 13th, 2007 at 8:26 pm

Terry Francona has lost his mind. He’s batting Wife-Beater Julio “.296 OBP” Lugo leadoff.

  377. randy l August 13th, 2007 at 8:27 pm

    hey smith-
once peter a sees your comment how long do you think your comments will last on this page? your ip address will be blocked too . have a nice life.

  378. dontfirecash August 13th, 2007 at 8:27 pm

I figured the trolls wouldn’t be out tonight. Guess I was wrong.

  379. This Year August 13th, 2007 at 8:27 pm

I live in Boston– unfortunately. And that stuff is typical up here– unfortunately. And this guy is just plain unfortunate.

  380. CB August 13th, 2007 at 8:27 pm

It’s really pathetic how the trolls operate.

Everyone on the board has done a great job tonight of ignoring him or just taking him for the sad jerk he is.

He gets no reaction from the board so he has to resort vile racist comments to try to get some kind of reaction.

Sounds pretty desperate…. kind of like a certain team…

Just ignore the Boston trolls, even the typical classless racist nonsense. It’s expected from his type.

  381. Andrea August 13th, 2007 at 8:27 pm

if someone emails Pete, whatever. But telling Racist McRacistson that he’s out of line only seems to encourage him. We seemed to be doing well ignoring him. Maybe we should go back to that?

  382. BBB August 13th, 2007 at 8:27 pm

Yeah I am NOT cool with the racial slurs on this blog either. This f-tard needs to ride out on whatever sheep it rode in on.

  383. Joe Mama August 13th, 2007 at 8:28 pm

I believe that racial slurs are out of line

  384. Matty August 13th, 2007 at 8:28 pm

Smith, if Wang is so bad, what’s the deal with Matsuzaka?

  385. Ron August 13th, 2007 at 8:29 pm

It should be noted that Andy Pettite, CMW, Roger Clemens, and Mike Mussina all have better ERAs than Tim Wakefield.

  386. Jeff NJ August 13th, 2007 at 8:29 pm

I think we’re stuck with him until the Yankees win and Boston lose like always. Pete is off tonight.

  387. Boston Yankee August 13th, 2007 at 8:29 pm

okay i just sent an email about the last comment.

doesnt it feel like matsui has been a yankee forever?

  388. Rebecca August 13th, 2007 at 8:29 pm

    Or Okajima?

  389. Andrea August 13th, 2007 at 8:30 pm

ok, I love Jorge, but his bat and helmet are freaking vile!

  390. BBB August 13th, 2007 at 8:30 pm

    Kennedy
    5 5 0 0 2 1

  392. Ron August 13th, 2007 at 8:30 pm

Michael Kay knows absolutely nothing about baseball players in general.

  393. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay) August 13th, 2007 at 8:30 pm

why does everyone say email and nobody do it. i just did cause it seems like nobody else is

  394. kasey August 13th, 2007 at 8:30 pm

um, can somebody get the racist the hell off the board?

  395. This Year August 13th, 2007 at 8:31 pm

    5 shutout innings for Kennedy.

  396. dontfirecash August 13th, 2007 at 8:31 pm

dude shut up, that is ridiculous.

  397. Jeff NJ August 13th, 2007 at 8:32 pm

Hopefully the troll is posting from his cell phone, then Pete can publish his phone number. He may even get a call from a woman for the first time.

  398. BBB August 13th, 2007 at 8:32 pm

    Kennedy pwns my soul.

  399. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay) August 13th, 2007 at 8:32 pm

bbb it would be better if he loved kay and whenever he saw him he made a b (bb) -line to him with that smile and gave him a huge pound then a bear hug. id pay to see that

  400. Andrea August 13th, 2007 at 8:32 pm

Boston Yankee: I think Pete has the night off tonight. Just ignore it. We’ve grown accostomed to the trolls lately.

Wow, what’s all the booing at the Stadium about?

  401. CB August 13th, 2007 at 8:32 pm

    Andrea,

Point well made. Tonight was very good because everyone ignored the troll.

His only purpose is to be inflammatory so that the discussion bogs down and attention is drawn to him rather than the terrific baseball the Yankees are playing.

The fans of some teams are dying for a distraction from what’s going on between the lines.

I guess some Boston fans would rather stick with Gagne instead of Okajima becasue the much more effective pitcher is Asian.

  402. Ron August 13th, 2007 at 8:33 pm

I see a hanging breaking ball coming here.

  403. Ron August 13th, 2007 at 8:33 pm

    Not so much…

Come on, they need to enlarge this lead.

  404. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay) August 13th, 2007 at 8:34 pm

yea were the booing. and would michael kay shut up or talk about baseball. WHERES VIN SCULLY

  405. jennifer August 13th, 2007 at 8:34 pm

Yeah Pete can ban ip’s So this little idiot can’t just make up a new email address.

Wow very strange putting the bat on the ground. We need to get Kim down there to find out why.

  406. Ron August 13th, 2007 at 8:34 pm

Froemming is a very, very large man.

  407. BBB August 13th, 2007 at 8:35 pm

LOL Boston Yank, Kay’s pansy ass would go down like a ton of bricks. Shelley will crush him!

  408. Rebecca August 13th, 2007 at 8:35 pm

Andrea–it was probably someone with the nets missing a foul ball.

It happened to my cousin last month–we sat in those boxes, and we were on net duty, and he was too short to get the ball, so they booed him. I laughed at him, and was very gald it wasn’t me diving onto the net!

  409. Matty August 13th, 2007 at 8:35 pm

You have to do what I do – turn off the YES audio and listen to CBS-AM. Yes, it’s Sterling, but it’s better than Kay’s inanity.

  410. Andrea August 13th, 2007 at 8:36 pm

Boston yankee: I’d totally pay to see that too!

  411. Ron August 13th, 2007 at 8:36 pm

You know what would be fantastic? A cage match between Shelley Duncan and Mike Lupica.

  412. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay) August 13th, 2007 at 8:36 pm

Aww, Damon! But, as we now have a bigger lead than Boston, I won’t complain :-D

  438. UNIONVILLE, CT August 13th, 2007 at 8:40 pm

michael kay’s sign got ripped up classic

  439. jennifer August 13th, 2007 at 8:40 pm

It said Michael Kay is my Hero.

The kid just wanted to get on tv and he knew he would if he had a sign like that. There is no way on gods green earth he actually thought that.

  440. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay) August 13th, 2007 at 8:40 pm

    i know you have jennifer

  441. Andrea August 13th, 2007 at 8:41 pm

    CB: that makes me sad.

I went to Fenway this weekend to watch some minor league games. I decided to be noncontroversial and just wore a hat of the minor league team we were with (a tampa affiliate) and a Jackie Robinson t-shirt. I guess some Boston people hated me anyway, then.

  442. dontfirecash August 13th, 2007 at 8:41 pm

steve phillips is the definition of a moron. You can look up idiot in the dictionary and there is a picture of Steve Phillips..Kazmir for Zambrono anyone?

  443. Rebecca August 13th, 2007 at 8:41 pm

I’m talking about the Melky Cabrera: Priceless one ;)

  444. ramar August 13th, 2007 at 8:42 pm

  446. J-Dawg August 13th, 2007 at 8:42 pm

I would be worried if Steve Phillips was praising my team!!!!

  447. jennifer August 13th, 2007 at 8:42 pm

Nieves is batting for Scraton he is hitting .194 with 3 rbi. :(

I feel so much better with Jose behind the plate, there is no way we would have swept if Nieves was behind the plate.

F U NAVARRO! you had the gosh darn ball and dropped it!! would have been 0-0

  448. Andrea August 13th, 2007 at 8:42 pm

BBB: Where’d you get your got melky? shirt? I want one so bad and I can’t find them anywhere anymore except mlb.com and they’re $25 on there!

  449. . August 13th, 2007 at 8:43 pm

    now Wakefield has a no-hit through 8 and 2/3.

  450. Andrea August 13th, 2007 at 8:44 pm

jennifer: I agree with you, but it makes me so sad that Nieves is doing so poorly. I love him. I even got a Nieves t-shirt. He’s just so happy to be anywhere. I wanna go to a SWB game just to see him!

  451. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay) August 13th, 2007 at 8:44 pm

anyone hear about igawa and the waivers?

  452. Andrea August 13th, 2007 at 8:45 pm

Boston yankee: nope–any news, or are ou just asking?

  453. Rebecca August 13th, 2007 at 8:45 pm

…good thing we got that run o-o

  454. Ron August 13th, 2007 at 8:45 pm

Now that’s just weird. Damn it Wang.

  455. jennifer August 13th, 2007 at 8:45 pm

Wow that didn’t look like it would go out. Such a free and easy swing.

  456. BBB August 13th, 2007 at 8:45 pm

Andrea, I got it in Modells in North Jersey (Paramus)…it was only like $15 cause I cheated and bought it in a kids size, lol.

  457. dontfirecash August 13th, 2007 at 8:46 pm

ahhh why wang? you never give up homeruns.

  458. BBB August 13th, 2007 at 8:46 pm

eeeek…yeah good thing we got that run!

  459. This Year August 13th, 2007 at 8:47 pm

My technique for dealing with trolls– especially racist ones– is simply not to read their posts. You see the name, you simply skip to the next. That way there is no way you can react. Takes a little self-discipline, but it works.

  460. Ron August 13th, 2007 at 8:47 pm

    Great, now he’s walking people.

  461. Jeff NJ August 13th, 2007 at 8:48 pm

Hey not sure if you guys noticed, Wakefield has a no hitter through 6. Bout time he had a good outing. Boston only holds a 1-0 lead though, but the weak bullpen will blow that as soon as knucklemouth gives up a hit.

  462. jennifer August 13th, 2007 at 8:48 pm

bbb which one? there are two.

  463. Andrea August 13th, 2007 at 8:48 pm

BBB: i’ve looked all over at every Modell’s I’ve been too! aw man :(

  464. kasey August 13th, 2007 at 8:48 pm

wow, wang must really want to keep the “he’s not an ace” argument going, because he sure isn’t pitching like one.

  465. Rebecca August 13th, 2007 at 8:48 pm

    c’mon, through a strike here…

  466. Harley August 13th, 2007 at 8:48 pm

Peter, just a quick note. I know site registration sounds like a pain. But it’s easier than you think, and as a result you’ll be able to ban trolls. That’ll improve things for everyone. And when you add racism to the usual stupidity? All the more reason to kick them to the curb.

  467. migames August 13th, 2007 at 8:49 pm

i agree with this year, after everyone avoids it, it just becomes kinda sad and pathetic.

  468. Rebecca August 13th, 2007 at 8:49 pm

    there we go!

  469. The D train August 13th, 2007 at 8:49 pm

Get Michael Kay drunk enough and he might challenge Shelley Duncan to an arm wrestling event.
You’ll be able to hear Kay’s bones crack in the middle of the Battery Tunnel.

  470. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay) August 13th, 2007 at 8:49 pm

oh dammit belial is a stupid troll too goddammit why do they come out.

and no i haved heard news

    HAHAHA NO NO HITTER

  471. kasey August 13th, 2007 at 8:50 pm

maybe i’ve just never paid attention to wang’s facial expressions, but he appears to have zero confidence in his stuff right now. and, judging by the results, maybe he shouldn’t.

  472. J-Dawg August 13th, 2007 at 8:50 pm

    Thank you Carl Crawford!!!!

  473. Jeff NJ August 13th, 2007 at 8:50 pm

No hitter is over. Wonder when gag-me is coming in to get the Red Sox another loss?

  474. jennifer August 13th, 2007 at 8:51 pm

Yeah I’d really wish we had to register. And maybe Pete could let someone monitor the posting when he is gone and delete the obviously disgusting posts.

It’s so funny these two morons were gone when the Yankees were kicking butt and they return when Wang does a little poorly. I’m sure once the no hitter is broken up they will leave again.

  475. Andrea August 13th, 2007 at 8:51 pm

Boston Yankee: I knew you’d get worked up about your favorite troll being back. Ignore him like the rest of them. Or I’ll come up to whatever the hell lake you’re on and smack you with Jorge’s dirty bat!

  476. Ron August 13th, 2007 at 8:52 pm

That Boston lead is about to die a horrible death.

  477. BBB August 13th, 2007 at 8:52 pm

Jennifer, I think it was the one on route 4. The bigger one of the two.

  478. KAJ August 13th, 2007 at 8:52 pm

NO MORE NO HITTER FOR WAKEFIELD ! Leadoff single and he easily steals 2nd base on the Whiffle Ball pitcher…SWEET !

  479. jennifer August 13th, 2007 at 8:52 pm

I love Carl Crawford!! Nice job of breaking it up.

  480. Rebecca August 13th, 2007 at 8:52 pm

I’m trying not to pay too much attention to Boston while the Yankees are still playing, but Carl Crawford is being held in very high esteem at the moment…

  481. YankeeJosh August 13th, 2007 at 8:53 pm

    Harley,

I too have been thinking about that for awhile. Registration gives some accountability, but can the trolls just register anyway and post a way? Seems like it may not be fool-proof.

  482. Jeff NJ August 13th, 2007 at 8:53 pm

The Sux are going to wish they brought some bats with them. TB is about to tie them.

  483. ramar August 13th, 2007 at 8:53 pm

Hopefully we’ll be 3 games out after tonight. I bet those sox ppl are crying in their melky, he he. Their boards are full of the “Sky is Falling” losers.

I think the bigger on is the one on 17.

What was in the shopping center? Kohls or Burlington?

  485. Andrea August 13th, 2007 at 8:53 pm

    jennifer…

It’s actually pretty simple. I moderate at a political/cultural site, and while you rarely have to do it, it’s nice to be able to weed out the truly offensive.

  488. jennifer August 13th, 2007 at 8:54 pm

Being that Wakefield can’t throw a complete game there isn’t much to worry about. As long as Tampa can stay within one until the imploded bull pen takes over they should be alright.

  499. BBB August 13th, 2007 at 8:57 pm

Rebecca: I’m not sure abt the Plaza, maybe in that sports store by McDonalds? I can’t believe these shirts are so hard to find! Melky deserves better than that! :)

And wakefield doesn’t choke (unlike wang) and still has the shutout through 7.

you forgot to mention that they are TATTOOING the ball off him now…I would LOVE to see either Wakefield come out for the 8th OR the SUPER FANTASTIC HAPPY HOUR that is the Boston Bullpen come in to save the day ! LOL….this makes at least 4 trolls out tonight…is it a full moon ! BaBye Boston and all your icehole fans….you had fun leading the division for most of the year, didn’t ya….after game 162, you’ll be singing a sad song, ding dongs !

How many division titles has Boston won?

  506. Jeff NJ August 13th, 2007 at 9:00 pm

How do the Red Sox know about getting a division title? If it wasn’t for their back door wild card, they would still believe in curses and ghosts and goblins in beantown. Scary stuff.

  507. KAJ August 13th, 2007 at 9:00 pm

btw, winning these kinds of close, low scoring games gets you division titles.

LOL….and when is the last time Boston won a division title, MORON ??? How many years in a row have the Yankees come out ahead and actually won the division, knucklehead ? What would Boston know about winning a division title ? I swear, is the IQ average in Boston THAT much lower than the national average ? Dude, I know that you ride the short bus to school, but you really need to go to be now..there is school tomorrow.

  508. Andrea August 13th, 2007 at 9:00 pm

BBB: I’ve seen the standard Cabrera tshirt–the blue with the interlocking NY on the left side of the chest and CABRERA and 28 on the back, but no “got melky?” So he’s got shirts out there. That’s good at least.

2-out walks are almost as sexy as 2-out hits.

  544. SJ44 August 13th, 2007 at 9:11 pm

Need a shutdown inning from Wang here.

He is struggling but, he battles and that’s positive.

I have more of a problem with Posada calling for a changeup to Patterson than Wang executing the pitch poorly. IMO, its the wrong pitch to throw to Patterson.

He has a buggywhip swing, can’t handle hard stuff on his hands so, there is no reason to try and fool him.

That LH swing can turn on changeups. If I am catching, especially with 2 outs and nobody on, I bust him inside and take my chances pitching that way.

Trying to fool him was the wrong way to go, IMO.

    Hmm… Red Sox trolls…

Welcome to the blog. :) Gotta love shutouts against the juggernaut that is the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Must be great after the tragedy of what happened last night. Wakefield pitching at least 7 so Gagne doesn’t have to come to the mound – great idea. We try to do the same with Farnsworth.

  561. Viper August 13th, 2007 at 9:14 pm

I’m sure they would like to save Joba for tomorrow if possible with Karstens on the hill.

  562. Global Warming August 13th, 2007 at 9:14 pm

Please no Jim Brower. I’d rather see Ron Villone.

  563. Viper August 13th, 2007 at 9:15 pm

It’s worth noting that Boston was just 10-9 against TB in 2006.

  564. Ron August 13th, 2007 at 9:16 pm

We’ll probably lose the Karstens game. Farnsworth can throw 100 pitches in relief.

  573. SJ44 August 13th, 2007 at 9:18 pm

You guys got to try and stop feeding the trolls. This is their “free night” since Pete is off. Its what they live for.

Just ignore them and they will be gone tomorrow night.

  574. Rebecca August 13th, 2007 at 9:19 pm

Well, if they did get Farnsworth up, we could probably count on the Yankees to put up a five spot…, and then you can put Brower or Villone in, who, while not the best, are capable of handling a seven run lead ;)

  575. YankeeJosh August 13th, 2007 at 9:19 pm

    Global Warming…

I’d take Britton too. Edwar just intrigues me with his change and I don’t think he got a fair shake his first time through.

  576. migames August 13th, 2007 at 9:19 pm

I was sucking the bottle when Bucky hit his homerun

  577. BBB August 13th, 2007 at 9:20 pm

Yeah, they might WANT to save Joba for tomorrow night when Karstens pitches, but with a 2-run lead (for now, hopefully more soon) we need our best in the game!

Nice K by Wang there to get out of the inning. He has gutted it out thus far!

  578. Andrea August 13th, 2007 at 9:20 pm

Papi, I meant. Damn it. I ruined it.

  579. Devon August 13th, 2007 at 9:20 pm

So if your Torre what do you do?

2 Run lead and Chien Ming Wand is at 92 Pitches(55 Strikes).

Do you start the inning with Joba?

Go with Wang and keep him on a tight leash? Have Vizcaino warming.

  581. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay) August 13th, 2007 at 9:21 pm

okay kat, ill order you one too

  582. migames August 13th, 2007 at 9:21 pm

Wilson Betemit doesnt switch hit, shelley duncan tells him what side to hit

  583. YankeeJosh August 13th, 2007 at 9:21 pm

Betemit looks awful right handed. Wonder if Joe considered putting Phillips in to PH. Is already the 6th and we’ll need a defensive replacement soon anyway.

  584. dontfirecash August 13th, 2007 at 9:22 pm

Can we give Jim Brower a chance? I know he wasn’t great his previous 2 appearances, but come on, the guy was having the season of his life at AAA. Relief pitchers always emerge out of nowhere, lets at least give him a fair shake.

  585. Matty August 13th, 2007 at 9:22 pm

    NAH GAWD IT’S SHELLEY DUNCAN

  586. Strummerson August 13th, 2007 at 9:22 pm

Equating the Sox and their fans with the Taliban and/or KKK lacks class just like using racial slurs against players. It’s beneath any true Yankee fan who loves the team, the City, and the game to engage in such stupidity. Our team represents the most cosmopolitan city in the country and our Stadium is the most ethnically and economically diverse Park in baseball. We don’t need to demonize either the competition or its fans.

  587. Andrea August 13th, 2007 at 9:22 pm

  602. Rebecca August 13th, 2007 at 9:25 pm

    Andrea–Oh, you know it.

  603. Andrea August 13th, 2007 at 9:26 pm

gayle: where’s Edgewater compared to New York? I work in White Plains…

  604. dontfirecash August 13th, 2007 at 9:26 pm

wangers ERA is seriously inflated due to his last appearance. it was 3.6 prior to the chicago game.

  605. Ron August 13th, 2007 at 9:27 pm

Jeter didn’t even move. That’s a hit most of the time, but still.

  606. Matty August 13th, 2007 at 9:28 pm

Do you know what I’d like?

Since Mariano comes in to “Enter Sandman”, I want Joba to come in to “Jesus Christ Superstar”.

  607. Ron August 13th, 2007 at 9:28 pm

Didn’t Wakefield once set a record by allowing six homers in a game?

  608. Andrea August 13th, 2007 at 9:29 pm

    matty: lol. that’d be awesome.

  609. SJ44 August 13th, 2007 at 9:29 pm

Joe tried to get Wang through the 7th but, unfortunately, he didn’t help him and this is an easy call.

Roberts is less dangerous a hitter from the right side.

Just need Villone to do his job.

Wang battled but, his location is still a bit off.

However, he still got them to the 7th with a 2 run lead. Its not up to the bullpen to do it job.

  610. jennifer August 13th, 2007 at 9:29 pm

    Edgewater is below the gwb

  611. gayle August 13th, 2007 at 9:30 pm

Edgewater is near Paramus in between the Lincoln Tunnel and GW bridge just south of fort Lee take the Palisades from White PLains or however you would notrmally go to the Bridge instead of going ont he bridge get off in Fort Lee and head south towards the Tunnel on River Road.

  612. Ron August 13th, 2007 at 9:31 pm

    Villone having gravity issues.

  613. . August 13th, 2007 at 9:31 pm

here’s hoping our future employee Johan will shut down Seattle

  614. kd August 13th, 2007 at 9:31 pm

Wang did his job. Let’s see Joba in the 8th

  615. Rebecca August 13th, 2007 at 9:31 pm

…that could have been really ugly.

  616. Ron August 13th, 2007 at 9:31 pm

    Illiterate, too?

  617. jennifer August 13th, 2007 at 9:31 pm

Hopefully Villone will get thru the inning, and we can use Joba for 8 and mo for 9.

Mo can work the 9th today right?

  618. Matty August 13th, 2007 at 9:32 pm

Edgewater – best views in New Jersey. Some of the highest rents too. I dated a girl from there. She was beautiful.

  619. Tiny Montgomery August 13th, 2007 at 9:32 pm

Joba has to sit for 2 weeks. Torre rules.

  620. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay) August 13th, 2007 at 9:32 pm

id like to see someone hit shelley

  621. migames August 13th, 2007 at 9:32 pm

villone didnt fall because shelley duncan didnt want him to fall

  622. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay) August 13th, 2007 at 9:32 pm

    see how he reacts

  623. Brian M August 13th, 2007 at 9:32 pm

You know the funny thing about the trolls. They are pushing the number of posts up. Which will push up the cost of advertising on the site. Which will get Pete a raise and help continued improvements of the site. Post away trolls. Its all good.

Plus Joba will finish this one up, Gagne will blow Bostons lead and we’ll all go home happy :)

  624. ami August 13th, 2007 at 9:33 pm

Thank you for defending Andy. We enjoy watching him play here! He seems like a nice guy, too.

  625. jennifer August 13th, 2007 at 9:33 pm

I want to get a place there, but it is way out of my price range. You have a beautiful view of Manhattan.

  626. kasey August 13th, 2007 at 9:34 pm

6IP 8H 4ER, responsible for the runner on first.

sorry, i’m not impressed. in his last 10 starts, how many times has wang allowed less than 3 runs? somebody, quick! here’s a hint: once.

  627. BBB August 13th, 2007 at 9:34 pm

Boston Yank, I would pay good money to see that! I so wanted one of those punk ass Blue Jays to throw one punch..he would have WHOOPED them!

  628. Matty August 13th, 2007 at 9:35 pm

When Smith goes to sleep tonight, Shelley will be waiting for him.

  629. Ron August 13th, 2007 at 9:35 pm

Wang’s hit a rough patch. It happens. If they can win when it does, that’s big.

  630. jennifer August 13th, 2007 at 9:35 pm

He better check under his bed for Shelley.

  631. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay) August 13th, 2007 at 9:35 pm

oh god and here comes kasey and his POSITIVE attitude

  632. gayle August 13th, 2007 at 9:36 pm

I have lived here for 7 years (moved from the city) was able to buy relatively low compared to what the cost is now. There are lots of newer developments both rental and own all along the river.

Edgewater also is home to many Yankees during the season. The location makes it very easy to get to the stadium.

  633. Ron August 13th, 2007 at 9:36 pm

    “Interesting” meaning…bad?

Corey’s plate discipline made Cano look like Nick the Stick.

  634. SJ44 August 13th, 2007 at 9:36 pm

Do yourself a favor Smith. Cool it while you can.

Its quite easy to get IP addresses from this blog and unless you want your mommy to get a call from somebody with the newspaper regarding your activity tonight, I suggest you quit while you are ahead.

  635. Mike NYY August 13th, 2007 at 9:37 pm

Come on Villone, we need a scoreless inning here

  636. BBB August 13th, 2007 at 9:37 pm

Kasey, pitchers slump just like batters. By your flawless logic Wang is somehow supposed to be immune to this?

The best starters give you a chance to win even when they don’t have their stuff…that is just what Wang did tonight.

  637. Ron August 13th, 2007 at 9:38 pm

For a small man, Corey has a HUGE swing.

  638. Ron August 13th, 2007 at 9:39 pm

    Not good.

  639. Kat August 13th, 2007 at 9:39 pm

Gayle… you have Yankees as neighbors?? When are we all going to be invited over!?!

  640. Jeff NJ August 13th, 2007 at 9:39 pm

Sj, which is it. We can’t go after the trolls but you can? It’s fun ripping on his sorry ass sometimes.

  641. Mike NYY August 13th, 2007 at 9:39 pm

I love the save by Kay there

The ball gets away from Posada and…. IN TIME…. Is Redman

  642. Jeff NJ August 13th, 2007 at 9:41 pm

Good news is if Joba only pitches one inning tonight, his exile is only one night, so we’ll get him again on Thursday.

  643. Josh August 13th, 2007 at 9:41 pm

    Was that an earned run?

  644. Rebecca August 13th, 2007 at 9:41 pm

Villone! GAH! You don’t do that in a two run game!

  645. Ron August 13th, 2007 at 9:41 pm

And that’s not doing any favors to Wang’s ERA.

  646. Jeff NJ August 13th, 2007 at 9:41 pm

    I’m sorry Wed.

  647. dontfirecash August 13th, 2007 at 9:41 pm

    come on ronny

  648. jennifer August 13th, 2007 at 9:42 pm

    Pete’s back :D Thanks PETE!!

    Took care of our friend.

We need to score a few give Joba some breathing room, i’m sure he’ll be nervous.

  649. Mike NYY August 13th, 2007 at 9:42 pm

Two Wild Pitches in an inning

    Villone needs to be gone

Sean Henn can do better than this

  650. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay) August 13th, 2007 at 9:42 pm

hahaha matty he walks into his room before saying good night to mommy and daddy. turns on the nightlight and shelley walks out from behind a curtain in a wicked deep voice: “ive been waiting…”

  651. YankeeJosh August 13th, 2007 at 9:42 pm

So, is it Joba for 1 then Mo, or Joba for 2 and rest Mo?

  652. KAJ August 13th, 2007 at 9:42 pm

That is OK…we’ll put up a 2 spot in the bottom of the inning…GO YANKEES….Update from Boston…PapelPug pitching in Boston, just in time to BLOW THE SAVE….BOO-HA-HA !!!

  653. jennifer August 13th, 2007 at 9:42 pm

Actually Jeff we’ll see him on Wednesday.

  654. SJ44 August 13th, 2007 at 9:43 pm

Not going after his ass Jeff. That’s Pete’s job.

Just trying to help clear up the clutter is all.

Geez, what a bad way to give away a run. Man, between Jorge not handling a pitch and a bad WP, a giveaway run.

One pitch away from Villone doing a great job.

Now, its up to Joba and Vizcaino to shut the door. I doubt Mo is available tonight.

  655. Ron August 13th, 2007 at 9:43 pm

    I want a bigger lead.

  656. dontfirecash August 13th, 2007 at 9:43 pm

I’d say no to Joba…He’ll be needed with kAAAArstens pitching tommmorow.

  657. KAJ August 13th, 2007 at 9:44 pm

    Pete is the BEST !

  658. Viper August 13th, 2007 at 9:44 pm

I don’t think Joba is going to get used tonight. he would have pitched the 7th inning otherwise.

They should just save him for tomorrow with Karstens on the mound.

  659. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay) August 13th, 2007 at 9:45 pm

i feel like somebody called it that it was one person… wow that person must be very smart

  660. Cumberberg August 13th, 2007 at 9:46 pm

so how does that fifth run get charged to wang? that’s really unfair. i wish they’d change the rule so that relievers are responsible for runners who are not in scoring position. you’re a reliever, you should be able to get out of a spot like that even with no outs.

  661. Jeff NJ August 13th, 2007 at 9:46 pm

Joba could be getting his first major league save tonight.

  662. YankeeJosh August 13th, 2007 at 9:47 pm

    Joba’s warming up!

  663. CB August 13th, 2007 at 9:47 pm

With Bedard pitching on Wednesday the Yankees need to win this game tonight.

I wouldn’t worry about saving Joba for tomorrow to protect a lead that may never materialize.

The next two games the pitching matchups actually favor Baltimore.

They lose this game and there is a possibility they could get swept in this series. I don’t think that will happen even if they don’t pull this game out but there is a risk.

Win this tonight and they only need one of the next two to take the series.

  664. Mike NYY August 13th, 2007 at 9:47 pm

so how does that fifth run get charged to wang? that’s really unfair. i wish they’d change the rule so that relievers are responsible for runners who are not in scoring position. you’re a reliever, you should be able to get out of a spot like that even with no outs.

And just one of the many many reasons why ERA is a terrible stat.

  665. Viper August 13th, 2007 at 9:47 pm

So much for that. Joba warming.

  666. Rebecca August 13th, 2007 at 9:48 pm

I would so love an extra run or two right now.

  667. Andrea August 13th, 2007 at 9:48 pm

    YAAAAY PETE!

  668. jennifer August 13th, 2007 at 9:49 pm

Joba is pitching the 7th, i’d like if they gave him a run or two to work with.

One of the joba rules is no more than 35 pitches. So there is no reason to save him for tomorrow if you are thinking along the line of long reliever.

  669. Ron August 13th, 2007 at 9:49 pm

That was practically in the dirt. WTF?

  670. KAJ August 13th, 2007 at 9:50 pm

    PapelPug gives up a 2 out WALK…GO PAPEL-PUG !

  671. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay) August 13th, 2007 at 9:50 pm

andrea you saw me call it. that is so sad…

  672. Ron August 13th, 2007 at 9:50 pm

Why are people thinking that Rivera won’t be used?

  673. jennifer August 13th, 2007 at 9:50 pm

Thankfully Bruce is retiring after this year.

Joba in a high pressure situation, lets see how he reacts.

  674. Phil August 13th, 2007 at 9:51 pm

If Joba has a quick 8th, might they leave him in for the ninth?

  675. Rebecca August 13th, 2007 at 9:51 pm

    JOBA TIME!

  676. SJ44 August 13th, 2007 at 9:52 pm

Man, Froemming missed 5 pitches in that half inning.

Hope he has the same strikezone for Joba.

Guys who are 100 pounds overweight shouldn’t be umpiring. They get lazy and Bruce has been mailing it in for years now.

    He can’t retire soon enough.

Awful job with balls and strikes that half inning.

  677. Ron August 13th, 2007 at 9:52 pm

Yay Red Sox. You beat a team that is 27 games over .500.

  678. KAJ August 13th, 2007 at 9:52 pm

PapelPug gets the save,,,Boston now up by a FULL 4.5 games…( well that will be back to 4.0 in about 30 minutes ) and only 44 games to play….4 game lead 44 games to play….that is HUGE ! We have NO BUSINESS thinking we can catch them, especially because we only play them 6 more times….DANG !

  679. jennifer August 13th, 2007 at 9:52 pm

    No thats Mo’s job.

  680. Ron August 13th, 2007 at 9:53 pm

    That’s under, of course.

  681. kasey August 13th, 2007 at 9:53 pm

“But based on the box score, it seems like Chien-Ming Wang battled after the first inning and kept the Yankees in it. Good sign for him.”

yeah, something like that. or he went 6+ and gave up 5 runs on 8 hits, putting his team in an immediate hole and continuing to give up runs after they’d handed him the lead, throwing only one 1-2-3 inning.

    either way.

  682. jennifer August 13th, 2007 at 9:53 pm

Calm down JobAa!! Pretend you’re back in Tornoto.

  683. Khoa August 13th, 2007 at 9:54 pm

    WOW! JOBA!!!!

  684. kasey August 13th, 2007 at 9:54 pm

“Guys who are 100 pounds overweight shouldn’t be umpiring. They get lazy and Bruce has been mailing it in for years now.”

    hilarious. and true.

  685. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay) August 13th, 2007 at 9:54 pm

im going to make some shirts “Good Joba”, “Joba well done”, “It’s a dirty joba but someones gotta do it”

  686. Rebecca August 13th, 2007 at 9:55 pm

Boston yankee: I’ll take one Dirty Joba t-shirt!

  688. dontfirecash August 13th, 2007 at 9:55 pm

  692. SJ44 August 13th, 2007 at 9:56 pm

Joba shakes off Posada to throw the slider again to K Tejada.

    Love it!!!

  693. Rebecca August 13th, 2007 at 9:56 pm

I love the stadium love for Joba.

That’s gotta do wonders for your confidence.

  694. CT Mike August 13th, 2007 at 9:56 pm

Shelley Duncan to close it in the ninth?

  695. Jeff NJ August 13th, 2007 at 9:56 pm

Wow. Joba shook off Jorge twice and threw that beautiful slider for strike three. After Mo’s cutter, it is my new favorite pitch. The Joba slider.

  696. Matthew August 13th, 2007 at 9:56 pm

ooo, you guys crack me up!!!

If Joba has a quick 8th, do you leave him in for the 9th?

    IS THAT a SERIOUS QUESTION??

Settle down folks, I love Joba too but think here.

  697. Phil August 13th, 2007 at 9:57 pm

Hate to burst your bubble, but I’ve already seen the Good Joba and Joba Well Done t-shirts outside the stadium.

  698. CB August 13th, 2007 at 9:57 pm

You know what they say about Joba…

    He’s no Gagne.

  699. UNIONVILLE, CT August 13th, 2007 at 9:57 pm

    KYLE WHO????????????

  700. Andrea August 13th, 2007 at 9:57 pm

Boston Yankee: Me too! Sign me up for a dirty Joba!

I am unbelievably jealous of EVERYONE at the Stadium tonight. I’ve got tickets for Sunday. What are the chances I’ll get to see Joba?

  701. jennifer August 13th, 2007 at 9:57 pm

How far out of favor has Kyle fallen. This must be eating him alive. A kid a 21 year old kid who has pitched 4 innings his entire major league carrer is pitching HIS INNING!!

  702. Jeff NJ August 13th, 2007 at 9:58 pm

Millar got out, as opposed to last night. Crowd chanting Joba!

  703. Khoa August 13th, 2007 at 9:58 pm

What about Joba the Hut? Are those floating around too?

  704. Phil August 13th, 2007 at 9:58 pm

I ask because I thought they said Mo was unavailable during the pregame show.

  705. Matty August 13th, 2007 at 9:58 pm

I demand “Joba the Mutt”, and he’s escorted to the mound by Kim Jones in a gold bikini.

  706. kasey August 13th, 2007 at 9:58 pm

tough not to love the kid, huh? real impressive.

  707. jennifer August 13th, 2007 at 9:58 pm

    WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW!!

I don’t even know what to say!!

  708. Erik August 13th, 2007 at 9:58 pm

  710. Phil August 13th, 2007 at 9:59 pm

Yes, the Joba the Hutt shirts were out there, also.

  711. mac August 13th, 2007 at 9:59 pm

    gotta love that fist pump.

  712. Rebecca August 13th, 2007 at 9:59 pm

How ridicolous must it be to hear your name chanted at the stadium after you’ve faced two batters?

  713. CB August 13th, 2007 at 9:59 pm

Joba’s slider might be the best slider anyone has seen since Randy Johnson’s in his prime

  714. Jeff NJ August 13th, 2007 at 9:59 pm

why not Joba in the 9th? Mo is gassed from last night.

  715. Matty August 13th, 2007 at 9:59 pm

Guys, no offense, a 21-year old kid should NOT be shaking off Posada.

  716. CT Mike August 13th, 2007 at 9:59 pm

  724. kasey August 13th, 2007 at 10:00 pm

because they’re not going to let a 21-year old rookie making his 3rd major league appearance close out a one-run game with the best closer of all time sitting in the bullpen, jeff.

  725. jennifer August 13th, 2007 at 10:00 pm

  732. Jeff NJ August 13th, 2007 at 10:02 pm

kasey, it is that type of thinking that let Mo pitch 3 pitches in the 1995 ALDS and then taking him out for Jack McDowell who promoptly blew the game. Sometimes, it’s worth going against convention.

  733. CT Mike August 13th, 2007 at 10:02 pm

Joba and Phil on the bench together. Love it. We should be seeing that for years to come.

  735. BBB August 13th, 2007 at 10:03 pm

  737. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay) August 13th, 2007 at 10:03 pm

    guys kim jones is ugly

  738. jennifer August 13th, 2007 at 10:04 pm

They should tell Joba to tone down the fist pump. Other teams won’t like it. Just like we can’t stand k-rods fist pump.

  739. Jeff NJ August 13th, 2007 at 10:04 pm

Also from my selfish perspective I have tickets Thursday so it would be nice if Joba gets a 2nd inning and can’t pitch again till then.

  740. YanksSox August 13th, 2007 at 10:04 pm

“Joba was f’ing pumped after that K.”
    “gotta love that fist pump.”
    “LOVE THE PUMP FIST…”

Wait so Beckett, K-Rod, and Papelbon can’t show emotion but Joba can…

    \kid pitched damn well

  741. gayle August 13th, 2007 at 10:05 pm

Mo for the 9th other than the obvious now Joba only needs 1 day of rest before the next start. Joba rules say 1 day off for every inning pitched.

How many days since there has been a sighting of Farnsworth

  742. Chuck August 13th, 2007 at 10:05 pm

I get where you guys are coming from and Posada is the veteran who knows the league, but it is ultimately the pitchrs call.

Kim Jones is not ugly. She’s no supermodel, but she’s not ugly.

  745. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay) August 13th, 2007 at 10:05 pm

YanksSox: i have been a huge critic of beckett but i say it because it shows immaturity. joba is a kid so i give him a pass

  746. dontfirecash August 13th, 2007 at 10:05 pm

yeah I don’t like the fist pump either.

  747. This Year August 13th, 2007 at 10:06 pm

Agree somewhat, jennifer. but I would not say anything to him NOW to temper that wonderful youthful enthusiasm.

  748. kasey August 13th, 2007 at 10:06 pm

“kasey, it is that type of thinking that let Mo pitch 3 pitches in the 1995 ALDS and then taking him out for Jack McDowell who promoptly blew the game. Sometimes, it’s worth going against convention.”

mother of god. i love the kid, too, but let’s not compare jack mcdowell in 1995 to mariano rivera in 2007, shall we? the kid’s 21, he’s still getting used to coming out of the bullpen, and if he goes 2 innings tonight, they lose him for 2 days again. why do that when rivera’s in the bullpen? it makes zero sense. it’s not “unconventional,” jeff. when you have the best closer in the history of the game available and a one-run lead, you use him.

  749. larocnewyork August 13th, 2007 at 10:06 pm

I can’t wait to see this kid as a starter. I know we need him in the pen, so i guess I will have to wait until 08′…

Would love to see a couple of 10+ k games!!!!

  750. UNIONVILLE, CT August 13th, 2007 at 10:06 pm

JUST ENJOYNIG THE MOMENT FROM THE KID IN HIS FIRST STADIUM APPERANCE…RELAXXXXXX

  751. jennifer August 13th, 2007 at 10:06 pm

I think they need to put out an apb for him. Get out the bloodhounds.

  752. Rebecca August 13th, 2007 at 10:06 pm

Three more outs! One run games make me nervous as hell, but the more of these we win, the better for us in the long stretch.

  753. randy l August 13th, 2007 at 10:07 pm

maybe jorge signaled him to shake him off wanting a slider all along. good question for peter to ask after the game.

  754. Ron August 13th, 2007 at 10:07 pm

It was a subdued fist pump.

  755. Global Warming August 13th, 2007 at 10:07 pm

“kasey, it is that type of thinking that let Mo pitch 3 pitches in the 1995 ALDS and then taking him out for Jack McDowell who promoptly blew the game. Sometimes, it’s worth going against convention.”

Did you just compare Jack friggen McDowell to modern day Mariano Rivera?

Mo should be closing the 9th. Period. Joba is pitching awesome but the 9th is a whole new ballgame. Why even risk and implosion?

  756. Jeff NJ August 13th, 2007 at 10:07 pm

kasey, I hope you’re right. I don’t want to have to say I told you so if Mo blows this game. I hope you’re right.

  757. SJ44 August 13th, 2007 at 10:07 pm

Yes, he should shake off Posada. If Wang did earlier in the game, he wouldn’t have thrown that changeup to Patterson to give away a run.

The pitcher has to be comfortable with the pitch he wants to throw. I don’t care how hard he throws, big league hitters will sit on 2-2 and 3-2 fastballs and eventually catch up to them.

By my count, he has shaken off Posada three times in his three games on 2-2 and 3-2 pitches and has gotten three strikeouts.

As Jorge learns what he likes more, they will be more in sync. But, right now, don’t mess with what’s working, IMO.

Mo, c’mon! No drama today, please?

  761. dontfirecash August 13th, 2007 at 10:08 pm

Though if I struck out a major league hitter I would probably do a pretty sweet dance on the mound.

  762. Phil August 13th, 2007 at 10:09 pm

Rumor has it Farnsworth was last seen having dinner with Ed Whitson and Steve Karsay.

  763. SJ44 August 13th, 2007 at 10:09 pm

If Mo is ok to pitch, you go to Mo.

Let’s not kill the kid with two inning appearances every time out.

You go to Mo in the 9th inning and take your chances. That’s a no brainer.

I don’t have a problem with the fistpump. Positive emotion never bothers me on the field.

  764. CB August 13th, 2007 at 10:09 pm

Joba is very different from most young pitchers because he has tremendous confidence in the slider.

He actually feels that it helps him get back to his proper release point so it settles down his command. That’s one of the reason’s why he feels so comfortable throwing it down in the count.

Jorge has probably caught very, very few young pitchers with that kind of confidence in their breaking pitches.

It’ll take them some time because of that to learn how to work together.

Until then Joba should do what makes him comfortable.

  765. YanksSox August 13th, 2007 at 10:09 pm

“I don’t have a problem with the fistpump. Positive emotion never bothers me on the field.”

Completely agree, but you can’t have it both ways. It sucks when the opposing pitcher does it, but when you own pitcher does, it feels extra sweet.

“Though if I struck out a major league hitter I would probably do a pretty sweet dance on the mound.”

I would do a whole freaking jig if I could even be allowed on a major league mound.

GEE KAJ WHO DO YOU THINK IT IS? IT ISNT LIKE HE HAS A GENERIC LAST NAME AND TYPING IN ALL CAPS?

  774. Peter Abraham August 13th, 2007 at 10:11 pm

Kasey: Why the hatred of Wang? All he has done is lead the majors in victories and the Yankees in innings since the start of last season. They would be screwed without him.

He is a sinkerball pitcher, so he pitches to contact. He doesn’t strike a lot of guys out but he gets a lot of grounders.

Just because the Yankees are doing so well and you can’t make your usual doom-and-gloom predictions, there’s no reason to give Wang a hard time.

    Can’t lose this game

  817. Jeff NJ August 13th, 2007 at 10:18 pm

  818. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay) August 13th, 2007 at 10:18 pm

The g-man with a walk off?

  820. Jeff NJ August 13th, 2007 at 10:19 pm

Mo is tired, he worked hard yesterday.

  821. Khoa August 13th, 2007 at 10:19 pm

The greatest closer of all time is still the man to put on the mound in a save situation. not a 21-year old pitching at the stadium for the first time. lets get the W.

  822. Andrea August 13th, 2007 at 10:19 pm

if Kay hadn’t been babbling about Mariano’s no blown saves since April, this wouldn’t have happened.

    I hate you, Jinxael Kay.

  823. corsari August 13th, 2007 at 10:19 pm

Always those darn bloop hits. Mo pitched fairly well imo, a pitcher can´t do much against those soft pops.

Let´s just get this win in the 9th or extras.

  824. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay) August 13th, 2007 at 10:19 pm

even if the yanks win this is a morale loss

  825. CB August 13th, 2007 at 10:20 pm

There is absolutely positively no “second guess” of bringing in Mariano into any game if he says he can go.

If he’s available he’s in the game.

I’ve followed Joba pretty closely since he was drafted and love his game but the idea that bringing Rivera into a one run game could be questioned is absurd.

  826. YanksSox August 13th, 2007 at 10:20 pm

It’s just going to have to be one of those ole walkoff wins to rile up the Yankees some more.

  827. Rebecca August 13th, 2007 at 10:20 pm

    You know, Duncan’s up third.

    This should be interesting.

I hope Mo’s okay, am a little worried.

  828. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay) August 13th, 2007 at 10:20 pm

    no jennifer the D MAN!

  829. Phil August 13th, 2007 at 10:20 pm

  830. tonyb August 13th, 2007 at 10:20 pm

While Mo’s control might not be great, none of those hits were centered on the fat part of the bat. Just a run of bad luck. It happens.

  831. jennifer August 13th, 2007 at 10:20 pm

How can Kay say the throw was alittle high? It was very high. If it was lower he would have been out!

  832. dontfirecash August 13th, 2007 at 10:20 pm

geez that was not a smooth inning.

  833. CT Mike August 13th, 2007 at 10:21 pm

  835. Global Warming August 13th, 2007 at 10:21 pm

  836. Mike NYY August 13th, 2007 at 10:21 pm

  839. we miss paulie August 13th, 2007 at 10:21 pm

Could Abreu have made that catch?

  840. SJ44 August 13th, 2007 at 10:21 pm

Its Mo’s first blown save since April 20. Kind of hard to kill him for that.

The two runs they gave away with wild pitches, especially the one in the 7th, came back to haunt them.

Just have to win it in the bottom of the 9th now.

  841. jennifer August 13th, 2007 at 10:21 pm

All pitchers go thru highs and lows. It is just mo’s low. better now than October.

  842. YankeeJosh August 13th, 2007 at 10:21 pm

I think we’ll be seeing Giambi third.

The worst part of this will be having to pitch Vizcaino in the 10th if we don’t win it here.

  843. Khoa August 13th, 2007 at 10:22 pm

oh sorry Boston. just got it. duh.

  845. Terry in N.H. August 13th, 2007 at 10:22 pm

Wow… Mo disappointing tonight. Maybe the Yanks have a nice little Joba vs. Mo thing going down…lol No win for Wang and Melkman bailed him out.. Better get the win now..c’mon boys..

  846. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay) August 13th, 2007 at 10:22 pm

yea if someone is questioning bringing the closer in to close then they either dont know baseball or are a little too exuberant at jobas success. but still morale loss even if they win… god im crushed. LETS DO THIS

  847. Jim Clark August 13th, 2007 at 10:22 pm

How many innings will this go before Torre brings in Farnsworth? Torre made the right move bringing in Rivera. It just didn’t work. Abreu plays lousy defense for everyone.

  848. UNIONVILLE, CT August 13th, 2007 at 10:22 pm

    DUNCAN WILL NOT BAT

  849. Ron August 13th, 2007 at 10:23 pm

Shelley is going to walk off and rip Larry Bowa’s arm off.

  850. Jeff NJ August 13th, 2007 at 10:23 pm

Mo is fine. Let’s not get crazy, he gave up a few bloop hits on a day after he threw a lot of pitches. He’s going to vulture a win tonight.

Still I just envisioned something for the first time:

    Mo setting up for Joba!

  851. Harley August 13th, 2007 at 10:23 pm

Can’t complain about putting Mo out there tonight, tho’ it’s worth noting he had nothing last night and extended himself as well. And yes, these were bloop hits, but that’s not entirely an adequate excuse. (Mo’s command was only marginally better tonite.) And sure, Abreu’s throw was up.

But watching the 8th and the 9th? You can’t help but think…

Future? Meet Past. Past? Meet Future.

  852. SJ44 August 13th, 2007 at 10:23 pm

This game isn’t on Torre. Please.

They have Mo on the mound with a one run lead in the 9th. I’ll take my chances with that everytime.

damon better start looking for a job cuz melky is the sh!t!

  858. CB August 13th, 2007 at 10:24 pm

This game is on Villone more than anyone else. The run he gave up was inexcusable and took away the cushion they had.

Those flairs against Mo are like seeing eye ground balls against a dominant power sinkerball pitcher. No one can square up on this cutter and the flares are the only thing that lead to “productive” at bats.

This game the offense has to pick up Mo. He’s done it enough for them this season.

  859. jennifer August 13th, 2007 at 10:24 pm

I love Andy and all, but the Gman should be pitch hitting for him.

    Yikes..Farns.

  865. Chuck August 13th, 2007 at 10:25 pm

    Farnsworthless warming up? Oh god.

  866. dontfirecash August 13th, 2007 at 10:25 pm

    Andy Phillips sucks.

  867. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay) August 13th, 2007 at 10:25 pm

khoa: having a blown save is never a good thing. the win is obviously wanted and welcome but you cant come away with total happiness. or that could just be the way i am i dont know.

  868. Mike NYY August 13th, 2007 at 10:25 pm

This game isn’t on Torre. Please.

They have Mo on the mound with a one run lead in the 9th. I’ll take my chances with that everytime.

Yeah but Villone with a 2 run lead in the 7th?

  869. Strummerson August 13th, 2007 at 10:25 pm

If the Yanks win, it means they can gut out ugly wins as well as blow-outs and nail-biters. Winning games like this builds morale. Ace struggles. Closer hiccups. Yanks (hopefully) still bear down and pull it out. Builds confidence and shows professionalism.

  870. jennifer August 13th, 2007 at 10:25 pm

Every single poster had the same reaction to Kyle warming.

managers, do you pr for Jason? He can’t run. but what if we don’t score than who plays first? Can Jose?

  871. Strummerson August 13th, 2007 at 10:25 pm

    Oh Captain, My Captain.

  872. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay) August 13th, 2007 at 10:26 pm

hahaha all the farns comments are brilliant hahaha. i think torre is warming him up so the dugout sees and they want to win now

  873. Global Warming August 13th, 2007 at 10:26 pm

We better score this inning because THE FARNS is lurking to pitch the 10th.

  875. Jeff NJ August 13th, 2007 at 10:27 pm

As for Villone in the 7th, it goes back to them not wanting Joba to come in the middle of an inning. I think they better drop that rule quickly. Torre is hamstrung with these rules right now.

  876. we miss paulie August 13th, 2007 at 10:27 pm

    Where is Viz?

  877. Ron August 13th, 2007 at 10:27 pm

I thought Melky might have a chance to score on that.

  878. Chuck August 13th, 2007 at 10:27 pm

    Giambinoooo!!

  879. Phil August 13th, 2007 at 10:27 pm

It is so nice to have Giambi back.

  884. Rebecca August 13th, 2007 at 10:28 pm

    They had Farnsworth up.

That’s when you knew the Yankees were going to win it this inning.

  885. Skippy August 13th, 2007 at 10:28 pm

    We love you, Melky.

    Great win

  891. kasey August 13th, 2007 at 10:29 pm

that’s a big win. that could have been a real heartbreaker, but it turned out to be a big win. you know this team is playing well when rivera does his best to blow two straight games and they wind up winning both.

  898. dontfirecash August 13th, 2007 at 10:29 pm

ugliest win of the year, no doubt.

    Cold out tonight Kim?

  900. KurticusMaximus August 13th, 2007 at 10:30 pm

Man, look at that morale loss there. Surely, a Pyrrhic victory.

Oh wait. Nope, they’re pumped. Nevermind.

    Let’s go Twins!

  901. KAJ August 13th, 2007 at 10:30 pm

    LOL……bring out the trolls !…..sweet 1-run victory,,,,4 games back & 44 to play….Yankees Rule !

  902. Mike NYY August 13th, 2007 at 10:30 pm

As for Villone in the 7th, it goes back to them not wanting Joba to come in the middle of an inning. I think they better drop that rule quickly. Torre is hamstrung with these rules right now.

Why even have Wang start the inning in the first place?

The rules are good. Chamberlain is a starter and the Yankees future ace

  903. CB August 13th, 2007 at 10:30 pm

Far from being a “morale loss” this is a huge win that will only give them more confidence.

The ace of the staff has an off day, a run scores on a wild pitch, and a cheap run on some flares ties the game in the ninth off the team’s rock of gibralter.

They manufactured that run out of sheer will.

Give Giambi a ton of credit. He’s come back and hasn’t complained one iota about not being back in the line up.

And the star of this game was Melky. He just changed this game dramatically with his glove and his legs.

  904. jennifer August 13th, 2007 at 10:30 pm

Looks like a line drive in the paper.

  905. UNIONVILLE, CT August 13th, 2007 at 10:31 pm

    A WIN IS A WIN

  906. Josh August 13th, 2007 at 10:31 pm

Giambi is really swinging the bat well since returning. Going to need to get him so more at bats.

  907. Strummerson August 13th, 2007 at 10:31 pm

My morale is doing pretty nicely just now.

  908. nettles August 13th, 2007 at 10:32 pm

  909. Global Warming August 13th, 2007 at 10:32 pm

“And, we dodged the Farnsworth bullet again. Whew!

It was practically the last 3 outs of the game for the Yankees hitters right there. I’m sure they were aware of the lurking Farns heh.

  910. screw you guys August 13th, 2007 at 10:32 pm

JOBA THE HEAT? NO ONE LIKED THAT? THAT’S GENIUS! COME ON!

    JOBA THE HEAT!

  911. jennifer August 13th, 2007 at 10:33 pm

Well time for me to go to bed. Busy day at work and still have a load of work to catch up on! Why can’t work stop while you’re on vacation.

  912. corsari August 13th, 2007 at 10:33 pm

Giambi was impressive again. Great move by Torre to let him hit against the righty and he crushed that ball. Obviously Jeter wins it with a man on 3rd and 1 out.

  913. SJ44 August 13th, 2007 at 10:33 pm

    Mike,

Its the right call to put Villone in, given the situation, in the 7th.

He has to get lefties out and he was one pitch away from having a solid outing.

Looks like Vizcaino was unavailable tonight so, its Villone’s inning.

I don’t want to see them use Joba for too many 2 inning outings because you lose him for two days and they need him.

What a great win!! Another game they lose in May.

Now, this team picks up someone when they fail. Its great to see.

Now, its Jeff Karstans turn. Give them a solid outing tomorrow and they will hit Cabrera.

Great to see them pick up Mo!!!

  914. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay) August 13th, 2007 at 10:33 pm

    over 900 comments wow

  915. Kat August 13th, 2007 at 10:33 pm

    OH MAN… what a win!!!

  916. Jeff NJ August 13th, 2007 at 10:34 pm

30-10 in the last 40 counting the suspended game. Not too shabby.

  917. Andrea August 13th, 2007 at 10:34 pm

I love Giambi off the bench. It’s just like “ho hum, here’s Andy Phillips. Out. Melky. I hit you with a pitch. OH CRAP. I FORGOT ABOUT YOU.”

    Love it.

  918. jennifer August 13th, 2007 at 10:34 pm

Now we just need Johan to be Johan so we can be in sole possession of the wild card, even though I don’t want the wild card, I WANT THE DIVISION!!

I wonder how big the rock is that all the writers who labeled us dead is.

  919. tonyb August 13th, 2007 at 10:34 pm

Wow – the replay showed Melky was running at the crack of Jeter’s bat with the infield in. What a great read of the play.

    Melky’s intangibles tonight:
    + 1 for Baserunning
+ 1 for Backing up in center field.

  920. myrtlebeachfan August 13th, 2007 at 10:34 pm

I really liked Joe trusting Giambi in that spot and pinch hitting him for Duncan. It showed guts, it was the right move, and it paid off. Well done Joe.

Oh, and who the hell else pitches the 7th? Jeez, guys. You dont give anyone a break. Joe did very well managing this game. Villone is a great 7th inning guy.

  921. BBB August 13th, 2007 at 10:35 pm

Woooooot! Morale-busting nothing, that was A GREAT WIN!!! Thank you Giambi and Jeter!!!

  922. passer by August 13th, 2007 at 10:35 pm

If anything it should boost their morale. It is always nice to run into trouble and out of it once in a while. Now they know that they can score a run when it is REALLY needed. As long as it doesn’t become a daily recurrence, a win like this once in a while is a confidence booster.

  923. Global Warming August 13th, 2007 at 10:35 pm

    Boston won.

    Detroit Lost.

Seattle winning 2-0 after 1 inning. Johan Santana pitching for Minny.

At the very least tonight we will be tied for the Wild Card, if Seattle loses– Alone at the top!

  924. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay) August 13th, 2007 at 10:35 pm

guys im saying my opinion is that its a morale loss MY OPINION… im a pessimist so once again its as i see it

  925. SJ44 August 13th, 2007 at 10:36 pm

I guess those who didn’t want Giambi on the team anymore need to re-evaluate their position.

You don’t change the “Joba Rules” under ANY circumstances.

This is a 21 year old kid with less than 150 professional innings. You don’t drop the rules. You use him smartly, which they have.

His long term future is much more important than the short term gain.

  926. Andrea August 13th, 2007 at 10:36 pm

Come on, guys. We all know Mo blew the save on purpose. He just wanted to see if they could come back from it.

  927. gayle August 13th, 2007 at 10:37 pm

    Couple of things from tonight:

Villone in the 7th is I think as much as fact that they probably wanted to stay away from The Viz tonight than anything. Proof of that was that he was not warming up in the bottom on the 9th along with Farnswroth.

We win yet another 1 run game in the 2nd half. This game would have been over way before that point earlier in the season the team would have not done well after the first inning 3-0 lead forget about coming back like that in the 9th.

Gotta go to Mo in the 9th no doubt about it. He will have the day off tomorrow and we will have a well rested Viz if we need him.

I had a bad feeling about this game once the sculpture fell of the easel never a good sign but the team fought hard.

Lets go Karstens keep the train moving.

  928. Andrea August 13th, 2007 at 10:37 pm

    Boston Yankee….a pessimist…..WHAT?!!?

  929. Strummerson August 13th, 2007 at 10:38 pm

Nice to see the rapport btw A-Rod and the Captain. It has been improving all year. Saw it after Alex belted number 500. Saw it here after Derek’s game-winning hit. Guess the Spring training dugout confessional did the trick.

  930. Hobs August 13th, 2007 at 10:38 pm

This is the type of win you need to keep the streak alive. Gutsy baseball at the end picking Mo up.

  931. Brian August 13th, 2007 at 10:38 pm

For some strange reason this season is starting to feel like 1995-1996.

  932. jennifer August 13th, 2007 at 10:38 pm

I love having Duncan on this team. He like a little kid! They just showed video of him on one of the homeruns, shouting it’s out. than pumping his fist. these games are so much fun to watch! they are having so much fun!

  933. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay) August 13th, 2007 at 10:38 pm

    ugh seatlle up 2-0

  934. Jeff NJ August 13th, 2007 at 10:39 pm

I’m ok with the days off for Joba in between, but would it really hurt him to come in with a man on 1st? I can’t imagine it would, but what do I know. I did call the blown save, but I’m happy Mo vultured the win and more importantly that the Yankees won. Imagine we win tomorrow with Karstens? That would be sweet.

  935. CB August 13th, 2007 at 10:39 pm

Bedard has been just about as good as any pitcher in baseball and with him going on Wednesday and Karstens going for the yankees tomorrow this was an absolutely enormous game.

Two months ago they lose this game, no question.

Great boost. They’ve been so bad this year in close games they need to win the ones that come up now.

You can’t say enough about Joba. His scoreless inning was critical because he was facing the heart of the orioles lineup. That was the Orioles best chance for taking control of the game and he shut them down.

Now they only need to win one of the next two to capture the series. It’ll be very interesting to see how Hughes pitches against Bedard on Wednesday.

  936. Big Johnson August 13th, 2007 at 10:39 pm

Another fantastic win. The Yanks are winning all kinds of games these days. On a night when are ace and closer weren’t sharp, they were able to squeeze out the tough win.

Play of the Game: Cabrera throw to the plate. Can this guy play or what? He single handedly saved and ultimately won the game for us. There is nothing more exciting than the anticipation that builds in the stadium as a throw from the outfield heads home in time to beat the runner.

Was there any doubt that Jete would deliver?

Seeing Farnsworthless warming was enough to make me grab the antacid, thanks to Jete we didn’t have to suffer through that.

Abreu should have ended the game with an accurate throw. The ball was there in time but too high.

Giambi needs to get into this lineup on a regular basis. Sitting him simply makes no sense. He possesses one of the fiercest bats in the league, and the fact that he is part of our bench is somewhat comical. Damon will have to rotate in and out of the outfield, but Jason is and should be our DH.

Can anyone imagine putting Arod on the bench as a pinch hitter? I realize Giambi doesn’t play the field, but his offense is of that caliber. I realize Joe is working him in slowly, but things need to continue in that direction.

    BJ

  937. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay) August 13th, 2007 at 10:39 pm

haha andrea none of you you dont get a shirt!

  938. J-Dawg August 13th, 2007 at 10:40 pm

We could win with Karstens tomorrow. As Jeter says the games aren’t played on paper.

  939. Andrea August 13th, 2007 at 10:41 pm

jennifer: that’s the way I feel. It’s fun to watch this. I was watching in the beginning of the season when they weren’t playing well and still taking time out to look at the good moments, the good plays, but this is just fun to watch. All the young kids. I don’t mind Joba’s fist pumps. I don’t usually mind a standard fist pump–it’s the droping to the knees every time k-rod saves a game that gets me.

anyone notice on the post-game that they didn’t even show the “art work” when showing the pre-game festivities?

  940. jennifer August 13th, 2007 at 10:41 pm

I’m going to Modells tomorrow at lunch! Getting a Got Melky shirt!!

  941. kasey August 13th, 2007 at 10:42 pm

i expect very little out of karstens tomorrow. (SJ44, you keep spelling his name wrong and it’s driving me nuts! are you doing it to spite me?!)

cabrera can be great or awful, depending on his control.

they need to find a way to eke out a win tomorrow, as bedard has been a monster this year.

and i don’t know how many people wanted giambi off the team. at least how many sane people. i just wanted them to use him correctly, and joe has done so. this hasn’t been sheffield v2.0, so far.

  942. got melky? August 13th, 2007 at 10:42 pm

18 games for the melkster, love this kid!

i wonder why they didn’t warm up farnsworth tonight.

  943. Jeff NJ August 13th, 2007 at 10:42 pm

We gotta get rid of Farnsworth already. Torre is playing with a short bullpen, especially with the Joba rules. By the way, I still think Karstens will be sent down after tomorrow, probably for Edwar.

  944. larocnewyork August 13th, 2007 at 10:43 pm

Anyone notice the blog is about to break 1000 comments??? That is huge!!! Wh

  945. Andrea August 13th, 2007 at 10:43 pm

aw, Boston Yankee….I want a shirt!

  946. mel August 13th, 2007 at 10:43 pm

I go out to do an errand, I come back and find a blown save, a win, a perfect inning for Joba, some bigot got kicked out, and 900+ posts in the game thread. Wild!

  947. Kat August 13th, 2007 at 10:44 pm

Jennifer, I personally enjoyed a series of three shots they showed immediately after the win… first it was Melky and Robbie, cheering and celebrating like they do jumping around and such; then they showed Jeter and Arod walking together, smiling and celebrating and such; then they showed Shelley and Giambi with the classic elbow smash. It was GREAT!

  948. Frank August 13th, 2007 at 10:44 pm

I think Pete should do an update when this blog breaks the thousand comment mark

  949. mel August 13th, 2007 at 10:45 pm

Joba only pitched an inning so he only gets one day rest. I wonder if Mariano is looking over his shoulder. lol.

  950. DCJim August 13th, 2007 at 10:45 pm

Hitting Melky with the pitch and the O’s get punished by Giambi and Jeter. Nice catch by Matsui on Patterson. Give credit where credit is due; Brian Roberts is one tough out. Terrific victory tonight.

  951. larocnewyork August 13th, 2007 at 10:46 pm

ok so who is going to shoot to be the 1000 comment??? lol

  952. Rebecca August 13th, 2007 at 10:46 pm

When they win games like this, it does give you really good feeling….

Melky with the throw, you won’t see that in the box score…Joba’s performance in the eighth, simply dominating…Melky knowing how to run the bases in the ninth.

It’s the intangibles. They weren’t working in May, they’re working now.

It’s good to know that if one player has a bad day (like Mo did, or like Wang’s first inning), the others are there to pick them up.

Oh, and a cool tidbit: *The Yanks haven’t scored less than 7 runs at the stadium since they lost 14-4 to Tampa on July 20*

  953. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay) August 13th, 2007 at 10:47 pm

i want 1000.. so uhh seattle is still up

  954. Russell August 13th, 2007 at 10:48 pm

I don’t think I have been that excited at the end of a ballgame before…

#1 – The Orioles are a pain in the @$$. They have a great offensive team and exploit the same problem the Yankees have with the Angels: speed on the bases.

#2 – Joba Chaimberlain is an animal and Gagne has already given up more runs as a Red Sock than Joba will give up the rest of this season.

#3 – Mo scared me yesterday, scared me again today. Every cutter inside I was cringing, afraid he was going to hit the batter. Mo will regroup.

#4 – If the game wen’t into the 10th inning, I would have turned off the tube with Farns coming in. I bet half the stadium would have walked out (OK, exaggeration).

#5 – Our bench is really contributing: Betemit and Giambi in particular. It is awesome to watch the DH spot juggled: Damon, Duncan, Giambino. What a 1-2-3 punch. With Duncan and Betemit, Joe has the flexibility of screwing with the other teams management because all every team does is bring in young left handers who throw 93+ out of the penn every time.

#6 – The Melkman delivered a friggen chocolate shake tonight. YOU THE MAN!

  955. CB August 13th, 2007 at 10:48 pm

    Jeff NJ,

I enjoy your posts but on the “Joba rules” I think you’re off the mark.

Nardi Contreras may be the best pitching development coach in baseball and he knows Joba better than anyone in the Yankees organization.

Nardi is the one who has put the Joba Rules into place to protect him. They should not diverge from what Nardi thinks is the best thing to do at all.

When is the last time the Yankees had a talent like Chamberlain? Talent wise he really is on the King Felix, Verlander level. He’s going to anchor the staff for 10 years. You cannot take any chance with his arm at all.

  956. Global Warming August 13th, 2007 at 10:48 pm

“Oh, and a cool tidbit: The Yanks haven’t scored less than 7 runs at the stadium since they lost 14-4 to Tampa on July 20″

    That’s really a great stat.

  957. mel August 13th, 2007 at 10:49 pm

    Frank,

I think Pete’s going to wait on his wrap up thread until this one tops the K mark. Maybe they’ll have it on the ESPN ticker. lol.

  958. Kat August 13th, 2007 at 10:50 pm

“The Melkman delivered a friggen chocolate shake tonight.”

    LOVE IT!

  959. Rebecca August 13th, 2007 at 10:53 pm

Chocolate shake with whipped cream and cinnamon flakes!

  960. SJ44 August 13th, 2007 at 10:55 pm

As much as we all hate Farnsworth, and I hate to say it but, we may end up needing him.

They are an arm short in the bullpen and Kyle could be that guy.

If Kyle can get his head out of his butt and give them 10-12 good innings the rest of the way, it could help them win some games.

The one guy short in the ‘pen (from an effectiveness standpoint) is worrying me more than anything about this team right now.

  961. Frank August 13th, 2007 at 10:55 pm

I do not know if something is wroing with Mariano, and I hope nothing is wrong, but his contol has not been there and I doubt that he will be available tomorrow. With Joba and Mo probably out for tomorrow I guess Viz closes and crazy Kyle is going to set up…lol

  962. Lucky Torre August 13th, 2007 at 10:56 pm

    Right Peter,

Torre made Bradford hit Cabrera. He also made Giambi get a single against a lefty who throws sidearm thus throws pitches which come more across the plate than a normal lefty was a no-brainer. He made the Orioles to push the outfielders back to prevent-double defense so Cabrera could advance to 3B on a single. He also made Jeter tap one towards 2B on purpose. Yeah, Torre did some great things in that inning.

Yes, Torre did accidentally manage the Yanks to a win tonight cuz that last frame was a gift.

Then again what do I expect from a constant Torre defender like you?

  963. JDnotDrew August 13th, 2007 at 10:58 pm

The reliever was a righty – good move by Torre batting the LEFTY Giambi

  964. passer by August 13th, 2007 at 10:58 pm

I was just looking at the play by play. 2 of the 5 ERs given up by Wang were on wild pitches. So, I’ll give Wanger one more bad start in the next 2 outings before getting concerned. Another thing abou Wang is that lefty heavy lineups can kill him if he is not dealing. Especially lefties with speed.

Thinking about it, lefties should run to third base. Otherwise they have a shoter distance to cover to get a hit than righties.

  965. Lucky Torre August 13th, 2007 at 10:58 pm

I.e. Having Giambi pinch-hit against an unusual lefty was a no-brainer. Bradford’s pitch goes across Giambi enough time for Giambi to time the ball and hit it. I’m just guessing that Giambi does at least o.k. if not great against him.

  966. Bill_Brasky August 13th, 2007 at 10:59 pm

I kinda agree about Farnsworth still being able to contribute to this team. Hopefully the success of the younger players will allow him to lose some of the ego, drop a little velocity for control and get in some quality. If nothing else we can toast his arm in long relief!!!

  967. Matthew August 13th, 2007 at 10:59 pm

The one thing I’m trying to figure out is why the Orioles record is so bad. That team is pesky, and has decent starters. Roberts is a very good player, Mora and Tejada solid. Obviously they give the Yanks trouble, gave Boston trouble. Just watching them this year, seems like their record should be much closer to .500

  970. Erik August 13th, 2007 at 11:00 pm

Chad Bradford’s a righty, so bringing a lefty in to pinch hit was a good move. and I’m no Torre apologist so this is actual praise.

  971. Mike R. August 13th, 2007 at 11:00 pm

I just wanted to comment on an incredible game and form part of a record breaking night. This is the year of the 1,000 runs for the Yanks and the thread of 1,000 comments for the blog. What a time to be a Yankee fan!!!!

  972. Rebecca August 13th, 2007 at 11:01 pm

now, if Minnesota can find a way to beat Seattle, it’d be icing on the cake.

  976. Mike R. August 13th, 2007 at 11:04 pm

    Matthew:

Their manager had something to do with it. They are above .500 since getting rid of Perlozzo. I don’t think that’s a coincidence. They will be dangerous in the future if Leo Mazzone stays on as the pitching coach and they can keep the core of their line up.

  977. whoa August 13th, 2007 at 11:04 pm

What you don’t seem to know, Peter, is the “accident” that Torre wins by is a payroll advantage of $50 million.

  978. funky chicken August 13th, 2007 at 11:04 pm

this season is different, that’s all i can say.

  979. CB August 13th, 2007 at 11:04 pm

It’s striking how this game mirrored Boston’s loss yesterday but then ultimately led to the opposite results.

Like Boston yesterday, the yanks were in control of this game and allowed the game to get tied up late just when you think the contest is all but over.

But unlike Boston yesterday, the Yankees had the fortitude to come right back that next inning and score to gut out a key victory.

  980. funky chicken August 13th, 2007 at 11:05 pm

let’s try to make it over the 1000 comment for pete!

  983. Bill_Brasky August 13th, 2007 at 11:08 pm

Wang will be fine. The Yanks are just spoiled with this guy who came out of nowhere and all of his games were automatic. Take a look at Beckett, he’s won some games this year where he hasn’t pitched his sharpest too. Once Wang got out of the first he got ahead of batters for the most part and got outs. The rest doesn’t matter.

  984. JGNYC August 13th, 2007 at 11:08 pm

    Lets Go Yankees!!!

  985. JRVJ August 13th, 2007 at 11:08 pm

Melky’s performance today is why, even though I buy the theory and think it’s a great tool, I am not a card carrying primate.

You simply cannot reflect Melky’s value to the Yanks today in a stat: Melky’s Win Share totals won’t necessarily reflect what he achieved today, but let’s be clear on something – this game does not get won without Melky.

  986. Joe Monte August 13th, 2007 at 11:09 pm

I hope they give Joba an extra day off here and there just to make sure he isn’t overworked and too much pressure applied to him. I think we should get Bruney back up in the bullpen over Brower.

  987. T.J. August 13th, 2007 at 11:09 pm

Thanks Pete for thinking about us when you’re off and having dinner. What a guy Pete is to give us his thoughts

  990. Mike R. August 13th, 2007 at 11:11 pm

    JRVJ

I totally agree with you. I have an ongoing war with Steve Phillips (and all the other trolls) for labeling Melky “Nothing more than a 4th outfielder. I love every minute that he proves them wrong. People seem to forget he turned 23 years old yesterday. He’s only getting better.

  991. Kat August 13th, 2007 at 11:11 pm

I cannot agree with you more, JRVJ ~ Melky is an asset to the team, and the stats just don’t show it. He contributes on and off the field!!!

  992. Go NYR August 13th, 2007 at 11:12 pm

They should play the out field in even more when theRivera is pitching. That would have been a 1-2-3 inning.

  993. Rebecca August 13th, 2007 at 11:12 pm

  994. Go NYR August 13th, 2007 at 11:12 pm

  995. Lance August 13th, 2007 at 11:12 pm

Great win…way to grind it out

  996. Big Johnson August 13th, 2007 at 11:12 pm

SJ said “As much as we all hate Farnsworth, and I hate to say it but, we may end up needing him.”

SJ, the yanks really need to put this issue to rest. I realize we are short one man in the pen, but worthless really needs to be moved. His list of failures is staggering, and there really is no reason whatsoever to expect him to change. There is also no room on a playoff contender for that deadbeat, he really is that awful. Anything less is pure sabotage.

I really hope that experiment is over as it has failed over and over and over again.

Repeat after me, ‘Farnsworth is hopeless.’ Further, the fans cant stand him, and getting booed every time he comes out will certainly not help him elevate his game to merely awful instead of downright dreadful.

I am utterly astonished how mesmerized coaches and owners are by velocity to the point of believing the radar gun over the box score. Simply amazing.

Time to complete this face lift with one more crucial move. As successful as the Yanks are, and I anticipate they will be, I cant imagine Farnsworthless in a weaver like situation in the bottom of the 12th of game seven. All of this will be for nothing…

    Hopefully Edwar gets moved soon.

    BJ

  997. Kat August 13th, 2007 at 11:15 pm

I literally groaned when I saw Farnsworth warming in the bullpen. When was the last time he even pitched??

  998. Joe L August 13th, 2007 at 11:15 pm

Karstens. 9 inning complete game shutout tomorrow night. Put it in the books.

  999. Go NYR August 13th, 2007 at 11:16 pm

This win is a big momentum game for the Yanks. It shows that we dont giveup and a blown save can be overocme. The gritty, gutty Yankees.

  1000. This Year August 13th, 2007 at 11:16 pm

Edwar pitched 2 innings tonight. 5 Ks. One fluke run.ERA under 1. The collective IQ of the Yankee braintrust as to him? Zero.

  1001. kasey August 13th, 2007 at 11:17 pm

    pete,

just saw your earlier comment asking me why the wang hate.

i don’t hate wang. he’s going to be a great 3rd starter when hughes and chamberlain round out. right now, he’s the best starter on the yankees and, statistically, one of the best in the game.

in his last 10 starts, he has allowed less than 3 runs one time. once. over his last two starts, which span 8.2 innings, he has allowed 13 runs.

i know you love the kid and you wrote a book on him. that’s awesome. by all accounts, he’s a great kid with a bright future. but he’s been up in the zone and falling behind hitters for six weeks now, and they need him to be better. is he a “true ace?” i don’t know or care. i have no idea how you quantify that. his numbers are certainly great, but – all things being equal – tell me you’d take wang in a must-win game over anybody on this list:

    santana
    halladay
    smoltz
    peavy
    beckett
    lackey
    carpenter
    bedard
    oswalt

if you want to make it an interesting conversation, you can add penny, sheets, webb, verlander, zambrano, haren and sabathia to that list. but, for me, there are nine, maybe ten pitchers i’d want on the hill before wang in a must-win game. that’s two rotations worth.

i’m not saying he’s a bad pitcher. he’s a very, VERY good young pitcher who’s going to help anchor the yankees staff for the next five years or more. but to pretend his outing in toronto was just because of the turf and his outing today was just a gutsy battle isn’t giving the whole picture. he’s been off his game for six weeks. it’s a testament to his sinker that he’s getting by, but let’s not pretend he’s been lights out over the last six weeks.

  1023. susan mullen August 13th, 2007 at 11:38 pm

I was disgusted that Mariano was allowed to pitch tonight after going 4 outs yesterday which ended up being a gutty outing that any other reliever in history would’ve blown. To stick him out there today after he obviously didn’t have it yesterday was a joke. But, Mark Feinsand will be happy. How do I know? Because I’ve heard him on various radio appearances and I know how he thinks. And, I read his columns in the NY Daily News.(He gets to go on Yankee radio by virtue of that). He’s mighty powerful, too.

  1024. mel August 13th, 2007 at 11:38 pm

Wang and Santana both seem to be off their game.

  1025. This Year August 13th, 2007 at 11:40 pm

Torre is such a poor handler of the pen. He has burned both Joba and Mo before Karstens. Dumb. Especially because Joba threw only 13 pitches in the 8th.

Rivera is not over used at all!!! At the beginning of the season and then again during the summer he always goes threw this where he gets hit because his location is off. It is usually 2 or 3 games at a time. If the outfield is playing in alittle bit more like they should of been then that is an easy catch for Abreu. The outfield always plays way too deep with Rivera on the mound, all of the slap hitters always get these alittle bloop hits. Very rarely do you see a double off the wall or a ball hit that hard to the outfield where the fielders should eb playing that far back.
