The roll continues, but what about Mo?

Peter Abraham
August

It’s amazing that the Yankees are 24-8 since the All-Star break and 29-10 since July 2.

But tonight was a warning sign that they Joe Torre has to be careful with Mariano Rivera.

Not only did Rivera allow three hits and a run in the ninth, but he twice failed to back up bases when he allowed a hit. Torre said after the game that Rivera would get Tuesday off. You have to wonder if, like last season, it’s catching up to him

His line the last two games: 2.1 6 2 2 0 2.

Like it or not, Kyle Farnsworth is going to have to pitch some important innings. Either that or Brian Cashman will have to find somebody else who can.

Finally, thanks to everybody who commented tonight. It’s nice to know that even on nights when I’m off, this blog keeps breathing. We had well over 1,000 comments on the game post. Thanks.

I’m back at the Stadium tomorrow and Wednesday. Catch you then.

Congatulations, Peter. 1000 comments. 1500 next?

  2. Dr. Acula

Okay, Farnsy pitches, but he has to wear Mo’s uniform

  3. farren

I agree they need to be careful with mo but it’s not exactly as if those balls were smoked. He was due to blow one so I’m just thankful it came in a win. And I’d rather see edwar throw 15 straight balls than see farnsworth in a meaningful spot.

  4. jon

    why isnt edwar up?

  5. Erik

    Dr. Acula

Do you want Farnsworthless’ bad vibes rubbing off on Mo’s uni?
on a serious note, Farnsworth in a big spot scares me. he can’t even pitch garbage time.

  6. Josh

Because of Edwars pitching line the other day. He walked something like 4 batters again.

We need to find something to do with Farsnworth.

  7. Josh

Edwar blew the save tonight. He pitched 1 inning giving up 1 earned run, 1 hit, 2 walks, and 4 K’s

In other good news Bruney got the save, gave up 1 hit.

  8. Rebecca

Mo’s 37, and the Yankees expect the same things out of him that he did in 99 and 00.

He’s gonna blow saves on occasion, and yes, it is certainly a concern, but the bigger concern, by far, is that if Rivera is unavailable, and you have to go to Farnsworth?

The Yankees need to solve this Farnsworth problem. They should be able to solve it from within, but they need to solve it soon.

I don’t want this guy on the mound when the division…hell…the wild card…is on the line.

  9. Chicago Dave

So what the heck is going on with the Igawa situation? I can’t find an update anywhere!

  10. This Year

Wrong. Edwar pitched 2 innings tonight. FIVE Ks, one fluke run. Somebody else, Pete? EDWAR. EDAWR. EDAWR. Then Britton. If I could rule the Yankee world…..

  11. Dr. Acula

    Dave-

the deadline on Iggy is 2:00PM tomorrow. they’re probably push until the last moment, just like during the trading deadline.

  12. This Year

    And if I could type…

  13. Chicago Dave

Possible solution to the “one arm short” dilemna…Ohlendorf (maybe)?

In the meantime, I know Brower had good numbers at SWB, but does anyone really think he’s going to be as effective at the major league level? There’s a reason he was released…Kind of like there was a reason the Angels gave up on Edwar. Hate to say it, but it’s true!

  14. Chicago Dave

Dr. Acula – So, what do you think…Will a deal get done or not? Personally, I think not…

  15. Chicago Dave

Has everyone gone to bed already?

  16. This Year

No it is not true. First outing for Yankees? 3 up, 3 Ks. Then pigheaded Torre sat him for TWO weeks, He has been stellar since going back down. Tonight, 2 innings, 5 Ks. Reminds me of Melky in ‘05 when he was humiliated in Boston having been called up. Went down and took care of business. No pouting. Now, well, now. Edawar’s numbers DEMAND him being up. But if I could rule the Yankees world….

  17. CB

The Farnsworth situation is made worse by the fact that Brower is just not going to be a guy who can be depended on to get outs.

In addition, it seems very unlikely that Torree will Trust him enough to use him. It’s not easy to earn Torre’s “trust” as it is and brower’s just not that good.

If it were only Farnsworth you could ride him as a sort of mop up guy until rosters expand. But with Farnsworth and Brower basically unusable and Karstens pitching poorly since coming back (and making the start tomorrow) the bullpen quickly gets reduced to 4 guys. Especially when one of those 4 is Villone, who’s limited.

That’s just too thin. Joba’s gotten Viz some rest thankfully because Viz was starting to drag.

They should get rid of Brower if he’s not going to be used. Same thing for Karstens – if he pitches poorly tomorrow he needs to go back to Scranton.

They need to come up with two arms from Scranton who will work and ride out Farns until the rosters expand.

They should try Edwar, Britton and possibly Ohlendorf to see who might have the hot hand.

They need to bridge the next three weeks with Kyle being dead weight on the roster. What a disaster he is even when he’s not pitching. It’s just a waste of a roster spot but with that contract there aren’t a lot of options until Sept 1 when he can be completely forgotten.

  18. Chicago Dave

Damn Seattle beating Santana! I honestly don’t believe Seattle is all that good, and I’m positive they would get exposed if they made the playoffs, but for now they really aren’t faltering… So frustrating!

  19. Global Warming

*************Chris “Great” Britton is the solution*************

  20. Chicago Dave

Regarding Farnsworth…I’d bet money he’s going to pop off again and rant to some reporter about how he’s not being used… The article should be coming out any day now…Book it!!!

  21. Chicago Dave

Rebecca – That is so very true!

  22. Viper

    Mo will be fine.

We go through this “what’s wrong with Mo?” stuff every year now and he’s always just fine in the end.

Yankee fans often forget that he is human on occasion.

He just converted 19 straight saves with a 1.45 ERA since April.

Mo is fine. Let’s not get worked up over it.

  23. Rebecca

it’s like I’ve said before, you can’t ignore Seattle. Yea, they shouldn’t be here, they should go away, but if there’s any sport that defies logic, it’s baseball.

  24. Chicago Dave

Rebecca – I just left a comment about the wise words you wrote, but somehow it ended up getting posted BEFORE your post…Weird!!! Wonder why that was…

  25. Taylor

We have someone that can pitch important innings in Edwar Ramirez. Call him up! I’ld bet the house he’s better than Brower.

  26. Vinny 5743

There have been instances where Farnsworth could have pitched that would have saved the arms of some of the other guys like Viz and Villone for later in the year. So he’s not as dependable in tight games in the late innings but he can be put in to mop up late or in the 6th or 7th innings when it’s not a critical time. Just keep him on a very short leash. If he screws up, take him out quickly. At least the other guys would get a break once in a while, even if it’s only for a batter or two. He has to be better than Browser is. If they are selective with him he can still be an asset.

  27. Chicago Dave

I think that, for whatever reason, Joe has decided that Edwar can’t hack it with the Yanks…and I think that’s the primary reason why he is unlikely to get called up again anytime soon.

Once Joe decides that a guy is a go-to guy or, conversely, a buster, there really seems to be no changing his mind.

  28. kasey

check mo’s splits between aug. 10 and aug. 20 the last few years. might shed some light on the situation.

they need to be careful with him, no doubt, but this is an annual ritual.

  29. Rebecca

Chicago Dave–that’s like the tenth time that’s happened today…

  30. Rebecca

Minnesota and Seattle is now tied!

  31. hmmm

i was at the game, so i wasn’t on the game thread, but does everyone realize that if Phillips started tonight, the Yankees would have lost?

    just wondering.

  32. Chicago Dave

Rebecca – Hmmm…Must be gremlins at work on the blog today! ;) (The system has probably been short-circuited by the sheer number of posts tonight!!)

  33. kasey

“I think that, for whatever reason, Joe has decided that Edwar can’t hack it with the Yanks…and I think that’s the primary reason why he is unlikely to get called up again anytime soon.”

that reason could be the fact that edwar continues to walk batters. they don’t need another guy who can’t throw strikes.

  34. jerkface

Actually the yankees would have won anyways because Phillips would have saved 6 runs with his glove, so the yankees would have won 3 to 0

  35. Josh

Minnesota just tied the game versus Seattle. It’s now 3-3 in the 7th.

  36. Chicago Dave

kasey – Yes, I agree with you wholeheartedly! Please, get us some guys who throw strikes!! I’ve had enough of the walk brigade…

  37. kasey

by the way, regarding my wang comment in the previous thread, it’s his last 8 starts that he has allowed 3 or more runs in (with the exception of KC). not 10. my mistake.

  38. jerkface

    Kasey:

    What?

    12:64 BB:K in 50+ IP in AAA.

  39. Andrew

F**k the detroit tigers. TWO picks away was rick porcello and now they are going to set a record for signing a H.S.er with a 7.7 million dollar bonus. RIDICULOUS.

  40. Chicago Dave

Can we somehow combine Andy Phillips’ defensive ability with Wilson Betemit’s power? Now that would be one beautiful Frankenstein!

  41. jerkface

His WHIP is less than 1. And sorry that was in 38 innings, not 50. He has 20:97 bb:k in 54.2 IP, less than 1 whip

Who cares if he walks batters when he strikes out 5 times as many than he walks and chances are that in any given inning he won’t walk or give up a hit?

  42. CB

    Andrew,

Where did you hear the porcello news? Did they also give him a major league contract?

I was really hoping they wouldn’t sign him.

Perhaps even more than Boston, the Yankees main competition over the next several years may become Detroit.

Who knows with high school pitchers but Porcello is uniformly considered special (and so close to being a yankee…)

A rotation of Verlander, Miller, Bonderman and Porcello with Zumaya and Rodney in the pen is going to be a difficult team to overcome, especially in a short playoff series.

  43. Chicago Dave

Andrew – Well, in all fairness, the Yanks are pursuing a policy of overpaying their draftees as well. Moreover, it seems like it’s going to become the common practice with many teams before long…

P.S. – I’m sure the Yanks would have ended up paying Porcello a similar bonus .

  44. hmmm

i don’t get it, Betemit made every play at 1B tonight.

i think people think Betemit fields like Giambi for some reason.

  45. Chicago Dave

Let’s think positive about Porcello…Maybe he’ll end up being the Tigers’ version of Brien Taylor!!! HA!!!!

  46. Rebecca

hmm–Maybe because Betemit’s built so big? I dunno. He’s also better at third and short than first, though that doesn’t mean he’s bad at first. and, well, Andy Phillips is just so good defensively…

I dunno, but I seem to be a minority in the whether or not to play Phillips debate.

And Seattle and Minnesota, as of right now, is tied, so by the end of the night the Yankees may be looking at first place in the Wild Card.

  47. kasey

    jerkface,

i could be mistaken, but he’s been walking more hitters since he got sent down. and they sent him down because he came into a game, threw 19 pitches, had a 2:17 strike-to-ball ratio (and one of those strikes was a grand slam) and generally looked like he had no business facing major league hitters. yes, he sat for two weeks before the outing and, certainly, that’s not ideal, but his job is to come in and throw strikes and he failed as miserably as somebody can fail.

i don’t get the love affair with this guy.

  48. Andrew

Baseballamerica reported it. Tigers are going to have solid pitching for many years to come.

  49. Andrew

Oh and yes he did get a major league deal.

  50. Dr. Acula

    Dave-

I think Iggy goes. It clear $4 mill for next year. How many teams out there are willing to pick up his contract, I don’t imagine many. Cash shouldn’t look a gift horse in the face.

  51. Chicago Dave

Dr. Acula – Yeah, but how are the Padres going to sneak anyone that’s halfway decent through waivers in order to complete the deal? After all, I don’t think Cashman is going to give up on Igawa for nothing.

  52. jerkface

    Kasey:

Don’t kill the guy on one poor outing. He had 2 weeks break after coming in and dominating in his first appearance and doing ‘alright’ in his second appearance.

    You ready for this stat?

Last 10 games: 5:22 BB:K Alright, so its not 5:1, but 4.2:1 is good enough for me.

Britton and Edwar should both be in our bullpen. They are both horses who can pitch more innings than Joba and will allow us to get rid of Brower and Farns.

  53. kasey

    “Igawa for nothing.”

    it’d be an upgrade.

  54. Chicago Dave

kasey – OUCH!!! But, yes, Igawa is just such a waste of space…I think most of us just want him gone, period!

  55. kasey

i’ll believe edwar and britton can help when i see it. hopefully they’ll get a chance to prove you wrong. i’m no fan of brower or farnsworth, either, but i think the love affair with britton and edwar is a little odd.

  56. jerkface

Why do you feel the love affair with Britton is odd? He pitched to a 135 ERA+ last year… IN THE AL EAST.

    LAST YEAR.

    AL EAST.

The fact he is sitting in the minors is atrocious and speaks volumes to Joe Torres mismanagement of the bullpen. Same with Edwar. He doesn’t get used for 2 weeks when his main pitch is a ‘feel pitch’. Joe Torre is the master of putting relievers in position to fail.

Why do you feel the love affair with Edwar is odd? He has the highest rated change up in the minors and one of the best in the major leagues if he is called up. He also has an era under 1, a whip under 1, and a ridiculous 18 k/9

  57. dontfirecash

I don’t think Ohlendorf is a good option this season. As far as I can tell, even with his increased velocity, he hasn’t been very good at Scranton. I would like to see Edwar get a chance like everyone else(except kasey).

  58. Yankee Fan in Chicago

Per all the worry about Detroit’s pitching:

Porcello might indeed be the real deal, but as for Miller, he’s injured now, and tho it’s a leg injury Steve Stone, the former pitcher and now color guy/analyst, thinks Miller’s mechanics are a big problem. Stone says he throws too much across his body, that his current leg injury is a result of this, and that he predicts big arm injuries in his future unless his mechanics are radically changed. Stone also noted — this was on his radio program here in Chicago last week — that he wouldn’t have touched Miller with a ten foot pole in the draft last year because of this.

  59. Vinny 5743

Torre isn’t in a position to take chances with anyone right now with the season and his job on the line. If he has the slightest doubt in his mind, he’s going to trust his instincts and go with them and with those players he trusts. I for one don’t blame him for that.

Change isn’t easy to take when you’re young, at his age it’s darn near unrealistic in his eyes. With all the influx of new players and all the shuffling going on within the organization, he’s being cautious as well.

He isn’t one to make knee jerk decisions as it is, like most here do. Just bring up this guy, DFA that guy, it doesn’t work that way. These are well calculated moves in most cases, made well in advance I might add, long before we find out about them. He has the best staff in the business to bounce ideas off of and get feedback from. And he doesn’t make all the decisions himself either, Cashman plays a big part in what goes on as does the scouting staff and minor league people employeed by the team.

Some of you Manager/GM’s think of something as if it can happen tomorrow, not likely. None of us know exactly what goes on so none of us can say what players they bring up and for what reasons. We are not in the loop when it come to the inside information the team has on their players. You can guess but that’s about it.

  60. 2Yankees143

Can someone clarify this for me please…I thought if you pinch hit for your DH in the American League then you would lose your DH and your pitcher would have to hit for the rest of the game? Why was that not the case tonight when Duncan PH for Damon?

  61. joba the heat/peterfan/blogcomment

congratulations, peter! you have a fan base so wide that someone who reads your blog actually came up with the genius nickname…

    JOBA THE HEAT!

  62. jerkface

I’m sorry but Cashman is not sitting in his office at the beginning of the season planning out Edwar’s rise to the majors. Players that get called up to the majors are usually called up out of necessity. Hughes was not supposed to be up until around the ASB and we saw how that turned out. Right now we have a necessity, and Edwar is rumored to be getting another shot soon anyways.

  63. Summer

I’m not worried about Mo. He seems to hit a small rough patch every August, and bounces back after a couple rough outings. Thankfully, the offense was able to win it tonight, so the damage was minimal. Let’s not forget him embarrassing the heart of the Jays’ order only a couple outings ago. What was much more worrisome was that Farnsworth was warming for a possible 10th inning! :o

As far as Chris Britton goes — seriously, no idea why he’s not in the pen, especially over, say, Jim Brower.

  64. dontfirecash

Joba the heat is a terrible nickname.

  65. Paddy R

britton should be with this ballclub, and should have been a long time ago. he did nothing last year in baltimore, this year it the minors, or this year with the yankees to indicate otherwise.

i’m all for not putting too much on chamberlain’s shoulders, but considering how quickly/easily he worked the 8th, and that mo was called on for 4 outs yesterday, it would have been the perfect time to let chamberlain pitch the 9th. now neither is available tomorrow.

i know you have to get wins when you can get them, and in that regard NOBODY beats mo, but if you have a talent like chamberlain to give him a blow in the right spot, it might not be a bad idea to take it. especially considering how many important games this team will be playing in the next 3 weeks.

  66. jerkface

You only lose the DH if you move the player in the DH spot to a fieldable position.

  67. Rebecca

2Yankees143–Because Damon was pinch hit for by another DH. If Damon is pinch hit for by a guy that then takes a position in the field, you lose the DH, but Duncan wasn’t playing in the field.

  68. J-Dawg

We’re still tied with the Mariners for the Wild Card lead. A Richie Sexson solo shot ended it.

  69. mel

Stupid Seattle. Sexon hitting .209 has 3 rbi in a 4-3 win.

  70. Josh

Seattle can’t winning, sooner or later their starting pitching will doom them.

  71. J-Dawg

I still don’t see how Seattle can stay in the race when Horacio Ramirez and Jeff Weaver make up two-fifths of the rotation!

  72. dontfirecash

God damn I hate Seattle. When are they going to fade? Their run differential is like +15 or some nonsense.

  73. Vinny 5743

    Hmmm:
What exactly difficult play did Betemit make tonight ?
I can tell you, not one other than routine outs. Torre can still make routine outs at 1st. When Betemit learns the plays around the bag better, learns the cut off plays and throws better and can show the range needed to play the position better, I’m sure he will be given every consideration at the position. He is not Minky there right now is all, let’s face it. We know Phillips is not an everyday 1st base person of the future either but neither is Betemit, he’s a backup. That’s why he was hired. If he becomes more great but right now he is not as experienced as Phillips at 1st. Simple as that. Phillips will be an afterthought once this season is over if not before then.

  74. dontfirecash

Can we stop talking about first base? Andy Phillips sucks, lets get over it.

  75. jerkface

We all know 1st base is the true hot corner.

  76. Peter Abraham

    Jerkface:

Torre has absolutely nothing to do with deciding with minor-league minors get called up. Zip. He is assigned players. A major league manager doesn’t have the time or desire to keep track of minor leaguers. Teams have a whole staff of people who do that.

Britton or Ramirez aren’t here because Cashman and his staff have decided they shouldn’t be here. Don’t blame Torre for that.

Meanwhile, whoever complained that Detroit paid way over slot for Porcello needs to look in the mirror if they are Yankee fans. What do you think Hughes and Chamberlain got? What do you think Brackman, Angelini, Weems, etc. will get? I commend Detroit for spending money in development. That’s how crappy teams get better. Porcello could be the next Verlander.

  77. Zune

Porcello close to deal with Tigers
    http://www.nj.com/sports/ledge.....amp;coll=1

  78. Vinny 5743

It makes me laugh when people say a player sucks when those same people couldn’t even hold the player’s cleats and probably can’t in rel life either.
If a guy makes it to major league level, they can’t suck. They may not be great players but they can’t suck.
Some people need to grow up.

  79. jerkface

    P-abe:

I never said he was in charge of it. However, I think Joe Torres stubborn refusal to accept new blood into the Yankees has forced Cash to back off. Britton was called up and got 1 appearance in 2 weeks. Edwar got 3 in a month.

Cash then made a decision to send both of them back to the minors so they could continue to get regular work.

If you have a manager that refuses to use what he is given then you have to plan around that, which I think Cashman has done to some extent.

  80. dontfirecash

A sub .700 OPS does suck. However, if I were in the majors my OPS would be about .002. That being said, what is the point of being a fan if you can’t criticize players?(and sorry for talking about 1B, I couldn’t help it)

  81. jerkface

Vinny: People who are not experts and veterans of a field cannot have any opinion on the field. NOT. I may not play real major league baseball, but I sure watch enough of it to know who is good and who is bad.

  82. mel

I don’t think anyone’s complaining about Detroit’s bonus, just tired of hearing how the mid-size markets can’t compete with the Yankees’ payroll. Blah, blah, blah.

As for those who were crying about Detroit grabbing Porcello. Enough already! Just count your blessings that you have Chamberlain, Hughes, Kennedy, et al. If and when Porcello becomes a big time free agent, then maybe he’ll come home to pitch. Meanwhile Chamberlain is making everyone in baseball take notice. What more do you want?

  83. Stuart

Peter is right on signing picks.. let teams do whatever thye want.. if the KC owner is a jerk screw him…

Mariano will be fine. also Britton does deserve the chance along with Edwar.

newsflash 1B for the Yanks is what it is.They do not have Texiera and will piece it together.Right now giambi, betemit, philips, and duncan are all playing decently at a minimum.

they are winning let it rest. bring up another arm for the pen……

  84. dontfirecash

I love how people keep talking about Teixiera. When did anyone ever mention him? I am pretty sure most people realize the trade deadline has passed.

  85. jerkface

They can’t recognize the fact that there is as much a difference between Phillips and Duncan/Betemit as Duncan/Betemit and Teix.

They are stuck in ‘Upgrade at 1st? ALL STARS!!” mode.

  86. dontfirecash

Good Lord Jerkface, it has been me and you against the legions of Andy supporters today. They have not yet seen the lights(which is Wilson Betemit, of course)

  87. mel

    dontfirecash,

Didn’t you ever have a girl that got away? That’s how some people here feel about Teixeira and Porcello.

  88. dontfirecash

haha, good stuff mel. How about the Big G? Bigtime hit and he’s looking as svelte as ever. I guess he and Damon are going to bring sexy back.

  89. mel

    dont,

    Yup, it’s all G. lol.

  90. E-ROC

Nice win for Yankees. Roughing up a solid pitcher like Gunthrie is always a good thing.

  91. E-ROC

Steve Phillips is an A&&HOLE. I can’t stand that clown. He says the Yanks won’t make the playoffs because of their pitching. And that the offense will tail off and the Yankees won’t have enough pitching down the stretch.

  92. Lance

Steve Phillips is ridiculous. He just said on Sportscenter that the Yankees would miss the playoffs because they don’t have enough pitching. Who is Steve Phillips pick to win the AL wild card??? The Seattle Mariners…who’s team ERA is 4.57 to the yankees team ERA of 4.35. This guy has no clue

  93. mel

Phillips must really hate us or has amnesia.

His preseason pick was that the Yankees would win the World Series.

    http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/.....xpertpicks

  94. 38disasters.com

man i am sick of the pitching pitching pitching pitching talk that comes out of every neanderthals mouth on bspn. steve phillips is a joke. and to the people that say we have no pitching (like phillips), i wonder what these clowns do: chamberlain, hughes, clemens, wang, pettite, mussina, rivera… i guess they just go around high fiving people all day.

  95. Lance

Yeah, it seems like it has just become a cliche over the last few years to say the yankees don’t have good pitching. Last year they certainly were lacking and in October it showed. This year they really do have some quality pitching and in my opinion if they can add one more quality arm to the bullpen mix they’re built just fine for october.

  96. Lance

Also keep in mind, if they can get to the postseason they’ll add probably either Hughes or Mussina to that bullpen as it will be just a 4 man rotation for the playoffs.

  97. Dr. Acula

Steve phillips is the guy you said the yanks were stupid for not trading Melky and a front line prospect for Gagne.

He also said Gagne to Boston the best deal in years, as it would “shorten” the game to 6 innings. HA!

  98. E-ROC

It’s hard to imagine that a utility infielder pressed into emergency pitching duty — think Jose Oquendo — could have performed any worse than Gagne has in his first five appearances for the Red Sox. After nearly blowing games with shaky outings in Seattle and Anaheim on the first two legs of the road trip, the wheels came off for Gagne in Baltimore, where his implosions cost the Red Sox two games.

In those fateful five appearances for Boston, he has allowed seven earned runs for a 15.75 ERA. He has faced 24 hitters for the Red Sox and 12 of them have reached base. Were the Red Sox at all concerned that he hadn’t pitched for the Rangers since Ron Washington used him three times in 24 hours on July 23-24, mopping up one day and saving both ends of a doubleheader the next?

Gawd, I’m old enough to remember when the Sox put Jose Canseco in during a blowout, and Ironically, Jose blew out his elbow! HA!

Maybe Joba can teach Farnsworth how to throw 98 and a slider witn more aplomb.

  102. 38disasters.com

yeh, maybe he can teach stone farnsworth, cuz kyle is a lost cause.

    haha, joba is the sheriff.

  106. No more rules for using Joba

So when will these ridiculous “rules” on where and when to use Joba be lifted? I got news for you:

There will come a point this season when the Yanks will need to use him on back-to-back nights. You can’t coddle/ baby/ shelter/ protect/ preserve/ conserve him forever. Under these so-called “rules”, here’s the Yankees bullpen without Karstens since he’s starting tomorrow night:

Mo for a third straight game (overworked)
    Farnsworth (puh-leeze)
    Villone
    Brower
    Vizcaino

Outside of Mo, the ONLY guy I am comfortable with holding a tie or lead before Mo comes in is Vizcaino. They might as well have only three guys out there before Mo (Viz, Brower, and Villone).

This hurts the team! Imagine the Yanks losing 7-4 tommorrow night because Brower gives up a 3-spot to snap a 3-3 tie because precious Joba can’t go two nights in a row after one inning of work. Now what if the Yanks miss the postseason by a game? You can list all the games Joba should’ve been in but wasn’t cuz of these “rules” for his use as the reason and this kid can go to hell from here on if that happens cuz he should’ve been in one of the games and who knows if he holds a tie or lead for a win. His so-called “future” hurts the Yankees.

Oh b.t.w. you want teams to sigh with relief and say “Thankfully we don’t have to face Joba again tonight.” cuz it’s his rest day? They’ll lick their chops at the prospects of facing Villone, Brower, Farnsworth, Karstens, and if he falters Vizcaino.

  107. whoa

Afer Rivera threw 30 pitches on Sunday, he shouldn’t have been used tonight. He’s still very good, but he is on the downside of his career because he lacks the stamina of his youth.

The problem with the pen is that Brower and Karstens have a roster spot and Ramirez and Britton don’t.

  108. whoa

Peter is wrong. Cashman consults with (and often defers to) Torre on marginal roster construction.

  109. No more rules for using Joba

BTW I don’t mean Joba himself can go to hell if the Yanks miss the postseason, I mean these rules. He’s been in the bigs for 8 days including his debut, time to deal with the fact that our bullpen outside of Mo sucks tomorrow night and we need a stopper before Mo outside of Vizcaino.

  110. whoa

Joba’s career is more important than this season.

  111. CB

Nardi Contreras is the one who has been overseeing Joba’s development since he was in winter ball last year.

Nardi is the one who developed the “Joba Rules.”

Nardi is perhaps the best pitching development coach in all of baseball.

But I suppose he has no idea what he’s doing in guiding Joba’s development in the majors and he’s just an idiot.

Do people stop for even a minute to think that there is a plan in place and that maybe people who know more about baseball than they do actually have a reason for doing something?

  112. Peter Abraham

Whoa: Torre had never so much as met Joba until he was called up. Obviously he is consulted but in terms of who gets called up, he really has no idea who is doing what. Nor should he.

Meanwhile, anybody who thinks there should be no rules for Joba is not intelligent. Ever hear of Kerry Wood? You don’t trash a kid’s arm. He has been pitching since his senior year of h.s. 4 years ago and had arm problems at Nebraska in 2006.

Jerkface: Edwar was on the roster for 19 days, not a month. He pitched three times and cried after one of them. I know the guy has great numbers at AAA but his fastball command is spotty and big-league hitters will crush a changeup if they’re sitting on it, which they would. He’s a two-pitch pitcher and one of them is only average. I think he deserves another shot but he’s no savior.

  113. Carmine

I was at the game tonight and a few notes.

-Joba is OVER. He was like a steroids injection for the crowd when he was pitching.

-Mo had his second iffy outing in a row, but I find it impossible to believe he’s done a 180 overnight. On a positive: he didn’t lose either game for us and only gave up 1 run in each game. It could’ve been a lot worse.

-Farnsworth has found a new purpose. In the bottom of the 9th, a message flashed on the board informing the crowd that Farnsworth was warming up which was met with a chorus of boos and my section agreed the Yankees had to get it done before Farnsworth had a chance to blow it. So, I think Kyle Farnsworth warming up serves as impending doom and as motivation to the team to start scoring runs.

  114. Mike S.

If you go to baseball-reference.com, and check out Mo’s tendencies, you will see that each year Mo has a “slump” that roughly lasts Aug. 10-20. It’s like when pitchers in ST have to fight through a dead arm period. It happens just about every year. Go and research it for yourself.

  115. SJ44

I am not worried about Mariano. He was lights out last Monday. Didn’t pitch until Friday, and was lights out again.

Struggled on Sunday, throwing 30 pitches. It was surprising to me he was used last night. Makes me think they were either holding back Vizcaino (for the Karstens start) or he was unavailable due to soreness or a slight injury.

Mo will be fine. Its his first blown save in 3 1/2 months. Puts him on target for his next blown save to be around Thanksgiving. I’ll take it.

Folks who think Joba Chamberlain shouldn’t have any “rules” attached to his workload really need to learn about the game.

The last thing this franchise is going to do is blow out the arm of their most prized prospect. Its not PlayStation. This is a 21 year old who has had some arm issues in the past.

Relax, enjoy the show, and don’t second guess every single move. Especially the one’s in which you show how little you know about the game. It doesn’t help your argument.

  116. Doreen

Well, all the “Betemit-at-1B” supporters certainly got a lift last night!

I’m just so happy the Yankees won a close game. I was surprised they brought in Mo since he’d thrown a lot of pitches yesterday; thought maybe they’d let Joba go two. But, now Joba’s available for Wednesday. The end of the game was so full of joy, it was a real pleasure to watch!

Not saying that Giambi shouldn’t start at DH, but it sure is quite a weapon if he’s ready-to-go off the bench. It’s such a change from just a few weeks ago, and even though I wish they didn’t have to let Cairo go, I have to admit, the bench is now something fearsome. You don’t get that feeling at the end of a close game that it’s an automatic loss anymore. Quite the contrary. (Although it was huge not to have to go to Farnsworth in x-tras, because you really don’t know what you’ll get with him.)

Send out good vibes for Karstens today. All he really has to do is keep the Yankees in the game and give them a chance to win. He doesn’t have to be lights-out.

  117. Jeff NJ

Just for the record I am not calling for their to be no rules for Joba. The days off in between are key. I just don’t understand why he has to start the inning. Joe gambled with Wang tonight in the 7th, he gave up a hit and then he had to go Villone or someone not named Joba.

Why can’t Joba come in the middle of an inning. Tell me how that puts more stress on his arm? The kid is 22 years old, he is not a baby. When do we take the shackles off Torre?

  118. hmmm

    “Hmmm:
What exactly difficult play did Betemit make tonight ? ”

he hit a round ball thrown 95 mph with a stick 400 ft.

  119. Rebecca

    Jeff NJ–

Joba was originally a starter–he’s still pitched, I believe, less than 20 innings as a reliever, so it’s not a stretch to say he’s still getting used to that role.

Coming in with men on is a completley different type of pressure, and the Yanks might not want to expose him to it just yet

  120. Ranting Guy

Pete: Have you heard anything indicating Joba’s switch to the bullpen is permanent? Or is he going to be a starter again next year?

  121. Jerkface

Cashman and every other official have stated Joba is a starter.

  122. Adam

If Joba is wasted as a setup man in the future then Cashman should be fired.

  123. whoa

“Whoa: Torre had never so much as met Joba until he was called up. Obviously he is consulted but in terms of who gets called up, he really has no idea who is doing what. Nor should he.”

Peter Why does Torre warm up a terrible ML pitcher like Brower virtually every day that he has been available, but Ramirez and Britton, when they were on the roster, were almost never called to warm up? Why did Torre use Brower in close games, even though he has been hit hard, yet Ramirez was only used in a blow out even though he was dominant in his first outing?

Cashman knows that Torre likes veterans and won’t use kids unless they have electric stuff like Joba, who may be a once in a generation pitcher, so he offers no basis of comparison.

It’s time to stop the madness and get Brower off this roster before he blows a game.
