Jeter treasured time with Rizzuto

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Aug 14, 2007 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

The marquee outside the Stadium says, “Phil Rizzuto 1917-2007.”

Back in February, Derek Jeter did a Q&A session with readers of this blog and mentioned that one of his favorite pieces of memorabilia was a signed photo of Phil Rizzuto.

The next day, I remember telling I was surprised by that answer and he told me how friendly Rizzuto was when he was a rookie. Jeter, of all the current Yankees, has the best sense of the team’s history.

I wonder if the photo he is referring to is the one where he imitated Jeter’s throw against the A’s that threw out Giambi.

  2. KAJ August 14th, 2007 at 2:59 pm

A Tribute where ALL the Yankees wear number 10 would be real special, too !

  3. Chris NY August 14th, 2007 at 3:04 pm

I’m sure they’ll be wearing his number on their sleeves for the rest of the reason, but everyone wearing number ten would be cool. Tough one to lose. i didn’t realize jeter had a blog. Nothing like 38 stitches i assume…..

  4. Brian F August 14th, 2007 at 3:09 pm

A more fitting tribute would be to win #27

Just another reason to enjoy Jeter’s career, thanks Pete.

    RIP Scooter.

Any word on what the Yanks might do in Scooter’s honor yet Pete?

I’m in D.C. so I get the Orioles broadcast of the game tonight which really stinks on a day like today.

makes sense. yankee SS with NJ ties. jeter probably spent summers in NJ watching the yankees on WPIX (i’m hypothesizing, i have no idea). i could see the connection.

also, jeter probably had to borrow a lot of cash from the Money Store during his rookie year.

just kidding. a little humor on a somber day.

    RIP Scooter.

i agree with Brian, win the WS. that’s how you do it.

I met Rizzuto when I was around 12. The Yankee press box used to be open from the top and you could talk to the press. I asked Phil to sign my program and he did. Then he said, “Here’s your autograph now sit down you huckleberry!”

It’s one of my favorite Yankee moments.

  9. Rebecca August 14th, 2007 at 3:15 pm

    Brian–

It’s beginning to have that sort of feel, isn’t it?

  10. Sam NY August 14th, 2007 at 3:18 pm

I think Scooter would be happy with a 27th title.

  11. Huuz August 14th, 2007 at 3:20 pm

    jeter grew up in Michigan

  12. LathamJoe August 14th, 2007 at 3:21 pm

I was a little too young to watch him as a baseball star, but as a lifelong Yankee fan, I thoroughly enjoyed his play-by-play and hijinks in the broadcast booth.
Phil Rizzuto was a link to the Great Yankee history from the 40s to the present. His dogged determination to be the best during his Yankee playing days and his broadcasting career marked by his excited “Holy Cow”, the fear of lightning, his fondness for cannolis, and for just being a fine, fine human being will be forever missed.
Rest In Peace, Phil Rizzuto, you have touched the lives of many of us in a wonderful way.

I’m sure they are going to be wearing a #10 patch on the uniform sleeve and black armband just like they did with Mantle, The Yankee Clipper, and Billy Martin.

  14. Viper August 14th, 2007 at 3:26 pm

Jeter is from Michigan, but spent summers in NJ with relatives and became a Yankee fan.

C’mon, you haven’t seen his Yankeeography?

  15. Lori August 14th, 2007 at 3:32 pm

Steinbrenner’s statement (posed on the Yankee website) is actually pretty neat. “Heaven must of needed a shortstop.”

  16. Rebecca August 14th, 2007 at 3:34 pm

Is it bad if I actually really like that comment? Because it’s so true…

  17. 38disasters.com August 14th, 2007 at 3:41 pm

yea the “I guess heaven must have needed a shortstop” is nothing short of hair-raising i think.

  18. Lori August 14th, 2007 at 3:43 pm

Of all the things I’ve read today about Scooter, that one actually brought tears to my eyes.

  19. Munsons Cap August 14th, 2007 at 3:46 pm

    Jeter has a blog???

  20. Jeremy August 14th, 2007 at 3:47 pm

I hope heaven doesn’t need more players.

  21. Lori August 14th, 2007 at 3:47 pm

No, I think Pete was referring to THIS blog — when Jeter answered our questions.

  22. 2007 Yankees August 14th, 2007 at 3:54 pm

Jeter was born in Pequannock, NJ but moved to Michigan when he was 4 or 5. He grandmother, who is a REAL nice lady, still lives in NJ.
Scooter ALWAYS like Jeter and Derek has always been a Yankee fan. Put the two together and you have one helluva matchup….lol
Derek Jeter has just graduated to the greatest living Yankee shortstop…….I’m gonna miss Scooter. I hope they play some clips played on the scoreboard tonight…I need some Rizzuto tonight.

  23. bleeckerandsullivan.com August 14th, 2007 at 4:08 pm

RIP Phil. You will be missed.

  24. Jeff NJ August 14th, 2007 at 4:14 pm

I think we can use a pick me up. This link is a fake conversation of baseball tonight discussing Rizzuto’s death with their usual bias and tactness. It’s a good distraction.

Whenever Scooter did some interviews about the current Yankees, you could tell that Scooter had a true affection for Jeter.

  26. Bob Michaels August 14th, 2007 at 4:21 pm

Phil has said many times that Jeter was the best Yankee Shortstop ever.

  27. .. August 14th, 2007 at 4:35 pm

If Karstens can throw a complete game shutout ,that would be a tribute Phil.

  28. LathamJoe August 14th, 2007 at 4:43 pm

“If Karstens can throw a complete game shutout ,that would be a tribute Phil.”

That will also be what is called ” A Miracle”!

  29. Jason August 15th, 2007 at 1:20 am

Phil was one of the reasons it was great to grow up in the metropolitan area in the 70′s. The passion that those teams brought out was incredible. I remember going after school to deliver the Citizen Register, scowering the box scores and then going home to watch the Yankees and listen to Phil. He is immortal and does cover many generations. He was a great man and a great Yankee.

  30. Shawn August 19th, 2007 at 11:14 am

For one game, if not the rest of the season, Derek should seek permission to wear #10.
