Baseball this afternoon in the Bronx

Day games after night games are no fun when you cover the night game. Nothing a Red Bull and playing some Springsteen loud on the car stereo didn’t cure, however.

No word yet on any transactions but I will pass those along as they become available.

Erik Bedard is 8-1 on the road this season, 8-0, 2.38 in his last 10 starts and has beaten the Yankees twice this season. Phil Hughes’ job is to keep the Yankees in the game until they can get to the Baltimore bullpen.

Back later with the lineup and any moves. Lots of blogging today, too.

Let’s hope the Orioles celebrated their victory a bit too much in NYC last night and are too tired to get any hits of young Phil and Joba.

  2. IowaBoy August 15th, 2007 at 10:04 am

Would any moves be made quickly enough to provide relief for todays game? We really need to move some dead wood out of the pen.

  3. Jeff NJ August 15th, 2007 at 10:04 am

Don’t you hate it when people post and brag about being the first one to post?

  4. Jeff NJ August 15th, 2007 at 10:04 am

And then they turn out to be 3rd?

  5. JRVJ August 15th, 2007 at 10:05 am

    Peter,

Since Posada was replaced by Molina at the top of the 7th (i.e., he only caught 6 innings), will he be catching this day game?

  6. Jeff NJ August 15th, 2007 at 10:06 am

The Orioles got lucky yesterday. They took advantage of a team without a real starter on a collective day of mourning for an entire organization. They need to pay for that today. Let’s do it for Phil.

  7. Marc August 15th, 2007 at 10:09 am

    JeffNj,

Let Phil do it for us!

  8. KAJ ( Fire Kay AND Singleton ) August 15th, 2007 at 10:13 am

Yankees will TATTOO ALL of the Orioles pitchers as a sweet payback for yesterday….Hughes, Joba & Mo give up a TOTAL of 1 run….Yankees win 15-1……….GO YANKEES !

  9. Brian August 15th, 2007 at 10:15 am

Peter, hopefully some updates throughout the day on draft picks signing?

  10. SJ44 August 15th, 2007 at 10:16 am

Its a tough matchup but, you have to beat pitchers like this if you make the playoffs so, might as well get that practice now.

  11. Drew August 15th, 2007 at 10:16 am

They’re not going to tattoo Bedard…but a nice 5-4 win will be most welcome. So with the return of K-Ram and bring up Chris Britton already. What the hell does this guy have to do to get a legitimate shot with them?

Peter – ask Cashman why no Britton? Yell it at him for me. ;)

  12. KAJ ( Fire Kay AND Singleton ) August 15th, 2007 at 10:16 am

FYI…Yankees will continue thier TEAR…and BoSux will continue to be SO-SO…with some LUCK landing on the other team as well….Yankees will trail the BoSux by only 1-2 games by close of business on Sunday, folks !

  13. swo August 15th, 2007 at 10:21 am

Brian…..rumor has it that the Brackman deal is almost done. Something like a 3 million signing bonus. Also, the deal with Carmen Angelini is almost done, which is impressive considering he had a strong commitment to Rice. Greg Peavey is definitely going to U of Oregon, however.

  14. LathamJoe August 15th, 2007 at 10:29 am

Greg Holle, a 6-8 HS pitcher/first basemen from Upstate NY (Yankees 35th rounder) declined the Yanks’ offer and will attend TCU. Too bad, this kid is quite an athlete as a two-sport star at CBA, Albany, NY.

  15. Drew August 15th, 2007 at 10:32 am

Baseball is different than other sport’s drafts, but a 35th rounder doesn’t sound like his odds are too good on making it to the bigs.

  16. Doug S August 15th, 2007 at 10:33 am

Any word on transactions? I say get Bruney back up and DFA Brower. Put Karstens on the DL for something(can you DL someone because they stink)and then recall Edwar. Bruney comes back before the 10 day window since we had to DL someone.

  17. Jeff NJ August 15th, 2007 at 10:35 am

Good point Marc. Phil of the Future will do it today for Phil of the Past. No disrespect intended.

  18. neil August 15th, 2007 at 10:38 am

send down Karstens and Brower(or DFA brower if he’s out of options) and call up Henn and edwar. Lefties are batting under .200 against Henn in AAA

  19. Rebecca August 15th, 2007 at 10:39 am

    C’mon Phil!

There’s some serious payback needs doing today…

  20. Tim August 15th, 2007 at 10:40 am

Per my post a few days ago, Karstens is not a major league pitcher period end of story, either is Brower especially on a team fighting for a playoff spot where every game is precious, hopefully that is the last time we see of them in a Yankee uniform. The better choice would have been Kennedy whether the baby sitters in the Yankees org or on this blog agree or not, its a fact. At least it would have been interesting to watch another young stud prospect instead of someone that is batting practice “fodder”.

As I also said in an ealier post the Yankees lack of relief pitching depth will make or break their chances of getting to the postseason. This is a paper thin bullpen right now and I get the feeling that Torre is kinda of touchy right now about his perceived handling of Joba. If Torre has his way his players would all be 10 year veterans, he seems to really hate the fact that Joba is “inexperienced”, when it just may be that sometimes talent trumps inexperience, but Joe is Joe. This team isn’t going to playoffs though with the likes of Karstens and Brower as vital bullpen cogs, they just aren’t.

  21. LathamJoe August 15th, 2007 at 10:51 am

    Drew:
You haven’t seen this kid play. He recently competed in the North Atlantic Connie Mack Regionals and showed great power, effective pitching, and good athleticism in the field. He competed against some of the best prospects in New York and New England and was a standout.
His dad Gary was a marvelous athlete, who tore up the Eastern and PCL in the 70s, but his attitude led to only a brief stint in MLB. Greg has no such ego problem.

After 3-4 years at TCU, this kid will be in the Top five Rounds if he chooses baseball.

  22. barnsy August 15th, 2007 at 10:51 am

Karstens is not a major league pitcher at this point.

For a guy without a good fastball he certainly walks way too many guys

  23. Munsons Cap August 15th, 2007 at 10:54 am

The kid MIGHT be in the top 5 rounds in 3 years.

WHy not take the money and begin a major league career now??

You can always go back to school.

You can’t always be a major league baseball player.

  24. Rich23 August 15th, 2007 at 10:55 am

Yesterday’s performance by Karstens was to be expected, but I didn’t expect Daniel Cabrera to shut down the offense. Oh, well, he is an all of nothing pitcher.

I have a feeling we might tag Bedard today for at least a few runs. A win today would be huge, espeically since we’d be facing Verlander the next game.

  25. Billy August 15th, 2007 at 10:57 am

Correct me if I’m wrong (and I know someone will) but I don’t think Bruney can be activated until Friday, which would be 10 days from the day he was sent down (unless he is replacing someone who is hurt).

  26. .. August 15th, 2007 at 10:58 am

I hate these afternoon games. The Yanks always seem so lethargic in these games. remember last year ALDS game 2 against Detroit. With Bedard today, we’re going to drop back to 6 games behind the sox. Baseball blows.

  27. Flagler August 15th, 2007 at 10:59 am

You can’t look at rounds a HS player is drafted in.

A lot of times they fall based on price, college, and signability.

  28. JRVJ August 15th, 2007 at 11:01 am

    Munsons Cap,

I’m not that very knowledgeable about this, but I thought that once a kid plays pro ball, he can’t receive a scholarship to play amateur/collegiate ball in that very sport (I believe they can get scholarships, but for other sports)

That being the case, unless I’m getting huge money up front (or I’m already well off enough that money for college is no issue), I could certainly see the logic of going to college via a scholarship.

  29. migames August 15th, 2007 at 11:02 am

The only thing that blows during day game is Cano. Good thing about last night, was Farnsworth. That was his best inning of the year. Yes, we were down 115 runs, but still, we need to build on something.

  30. E-ROC August 15th, 2007 at 11:04 am

Manager Joe Torre said Tuesday that he’s unlikely to use Joba Chamberlain in save situations when Mariano Rivera gets a day off.

“It’s easy to say after what we’ve seen so far, yeah, no problem (closing),” Torre said. “But we still have to keep in mind that he’s 21 years old and [Monday] was his first exposure to Yankee Stadium. I’d rather go with experience.”

  31. Eric August 15th, 2007 at 11:04 am

So BEdard is pitching so its an automatic loss???

Make a whole lot of sense

    Lets just quit now

  32. Rebecca August 15th, 2007 at 11:06 am

migames: And Torre’s said he’d give cano today off!

dunno if anyone remembers the 21 4 drubbing of Tampa? Day game. Arod’s #500? Day game. 5-4 win over Toronto? Day game. Sweep of Cleveland? Day game.

    I’m sure there are more.

  33. saucy August 15th, 2007 at 11:07 am

    day games stink!

and as a kid my summer camp never went to yankee stadium

    :(

    bah!

  34. Munsons Cap August 15th, 2007 at 11:08 am

    JR,

If the goal is to play pro baseball why turn that down?

Anything can happen in college. Blow out an arm. Lose desire. Not improve.

If the goal is to be a pro wouldn’t it make sense to go for it when you have the chance?

There is always school. Wouldn’t you want to at least try?

There are hundreds of guys each yr who regret passing on the chance to play everyday and be a pro.

  35. Josh August 15th, 2007 at 11:09 am

Let’s just hope that Yankees have a little more fight in the tank than last night.

  36. Jonah August 15th, 2007 at 11:09 am

Day game. Night game. Who cares lately? We’ve been playing good everywhere

  37. Doug S August 15th, 2007 at 11:09 am

Billy-That’s true about the 10 days BUT if say,Karstens had a finger problem or some other minor issue ,real or not, then Bruney can come back earlier.

  38. New Roc City August 15th, 2007 at 11:11 am

I hate day games because I don’t have a tv and have to watch on ESPN and listen to all the rubes here blog and complain about everything.

  39. Buddy August 15th, 2007 at 11:13 am

I’d like to not see Karstens again this year.

  40. swo August 15th, 2007 at 11:19 am

You can’t just lie about a player being injured. And even if they could bribe a doctor into saying it, is it even worth it? They sent Bruney down to get over his control issues, and I doubt he’s already accomplished that in just a week.

Better off calling up somebody who deserves to be up. Like Ramirez and Britton.

  41. Deep to Left August 15th, 2007 at 11:20 am

Don’t see why we’d bring Bruney back already. He was sent down to work on his control. So far he’s pitched 2.2 innings and given up 2 runs on a hit, two walks and one strkeout.

  42. LathamJoe August 15th, 2007 at 11:22 am

    Munson’s Cap:
JRVJ hit it the nail on the head. Holle gets his education paid for right now, wants more baseball experience at a University that has a Top 20 College Baseball reputation..and feels that he will significantly improve his draft position with a few more years of experience.

Britton and Ramirez for Karstens & Brower would be my choices, although a lefty who can throw strikes and get lefty batters out consistently is sorely needed.

  43. JRVJ August 15th, 2007 at 11:25 am

    Munsons,

Again, if you are certain that you will get a big payoff, I more than see the logic of going pro at an early age (and by big payoff, let’s say at least equal to the value of 4 years tuition plus an extra 20 to 30% as a cushion).

However, if a player is not going to get enough money up front to “buy out” the benefit of getting a college education thanks to a scholarship, then going to college makes sense to me.

(As before, unless the kid is already well off enough that his educational costs are already more than covered, in which case a scholarship is not that impotant).

You mention that a players could blow an arm in college – the same thing could happen in the minors.

You mention that a player may lose the desire to play in the majors – if a kid has enough talent to play in the majors and loses that desire in college, he either smoked too much pot or frankly never had the drive to suceed at athletics.

i hope phil collins pitches himself a gem and we get this win.

yesterday night gagnay came into the game had an ok time with the devil rays and now all is forgiven by the drunkards in boston, and the gagnay trade is back to being the best trade of the last 35 years. give me a break.

“Day game. Night game. Who cares lately? ”

    my boss

  47. GG August 15th, 2007 at 11:52 am

Holle was going to be a tough sign from the get-go and his being drafted in the 35th round is more indicative of the strength of his commitment to TCU than of his talent level (Holle entered this spring rated as Baseball America’s 62nd-best prospect among high school players in the country, and the 2nd-best player in New York state). The Yankees threw a pile of cash at him but he figured he could better improve his position for the 2010 draft (when he becomes draft eligible again) by going to college. Best of luck to him at TCU.

  48. SJ44 August 15th, 2007 at 11:59 am

Can’t bring back Bruney until Friday, at the earliest, per the rules. He has to be down for 10 days before he is recalled.
