Bullpen gets some reinforcements

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Aug 15, 2007 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

RHP Edwar Ramirez and LHP Sean Henn have been recalled from Class AAA Scranton.

RHP Jim Brower and RHP Jeff Karstens are out. Karstens was optioned. I’m not sure of Brower’s status, but I suspect he was DFA’d.

Seriously…did Britton shoot someone’s dog? It just seems odd that he’d continually get passed over. Unless he’s on the DL again?

  2. Rebecca August 15th, 2007 at 11:04 am

    ‘Bout time.

    Let’s go win 27.

  3. Huuz August 15th, 2007 at 11:04 am

we need a W today. can’t let baltimore be the only team to take series from us since the AS break…

  4. Marc August 15th, 2007 at 11:05 am

Edwar is a no brainer. 2 questions remain, who is the Loogy, Villone or Henn? Second, who now the long man?

  5. Marc August 15th, 2007 at 11:06 am

Are they both going to make it for today’s game?

  6. Brian M August 15th, 2007 at 11:07 am

    Pete any word on Brackman?

  7. Tim August 15th, 2007 at 11:07 am

Now will Torre use Edwar more than once every 2 weeks? Imo- Henn is the long man and Villone the loogy for now.

  8. Ben August 15th, 2007 at 11:08 am

Pete, any word on why Britton “never got a shot” this year? I mean, I’m sure they will call him up September 1 (I think I’m sure!), but any sense for why he was the odd mad out all year? He’s put up decent numbers at AAA this season and was reasonably effective for the Orioles pitching at the Major League level last year.

  9. Coco Loco August 15th, 2007 at 11:09 am

    Marc,

Scranton (which is in the middle of a homestand) is not that far away. They could leave now and still make it for game time, even though they won’t actually be needed at 1:05 p.m.

  10. Ben August 15th, 2007 at 11:09 am

Neither pitched last night, so if they got the word yesterday/last night, the should have had plenty of time to make it to the Stadium.

  11. Motown Yankees Fan August 15th, 2007 at 11:10 am

Villone can only be the loogy if there are no men on base. I don’t know that we really need the loogy anyway. We just need some more Ws.

  12. Alex August 15th, 2007 at 11:10 am

Well, obvioiusly they need some bullpen help just to get through the next several games. I expect that Karstens will be back before Septmeber. Hopefully we will get a real look at Ramirez this time.

  13. myrtlebeachfan August 15th, 2007 at 11:12 am

The yankee hitters are going to take care of Bedard tonight. We’re going to score 5 runs off of him in 6 innings and Hughes will allow 2 in 7 IP

I’m feeling it. Bedard can be as good as he wants to be, but the Yankee hitters are relentless

  14. Dave August 15th, 2007 at 11:12 am

Brower DFA’d would open a 40 man roster spot, and I would guess Henn is being brought in to see if he can be the left hander out of the pen, so that Villone (he who only lets other peoples runners score) could be cut.

I think Karstens was rushed back and then didn’t get regular work, which can be hard for a guy that is not a hard thrower and really needs to hit his spots. Hopefully he can set him self right in the minors. Though I have been waiting for the same thing from Wright, Clippard and Desalvo after their demotions. I think that is why it was smart not to rush Kennedy. No need to chance damaging his confidence for one game…

  15. mel August 15th, 2007 at 11:13 am

Henn? Ugh. At least Karstens and Brower are gone. No offense.

Didn’t Pete say Betemit is giving Cano a spell at second? Very savvy, proactive move. I think the last day game at the stadium Cano’s booboo led to an 8 run frame.

Hoping for a good bounceback game.

  16. EricVA August 15th, 2007 at 11:13 am

    My thoughts on Britton:

Cashman has said that the reason the bullpen was ineffective was because they had the same type of relievers. Britton is another hard thrower, same as Farnsworth, Chamberlain, Bruney, etc. Now, if you want to argue changing Britton for Farnsworth, that’s different and I’d agree. But for now, Ramirez is a good alternative option out of the pen.

And of course Henn is the long man.

  17. funky chicken August 15th, 2007 at 11:15 am

    ericVA,

britton is not a hard thrower…
he tops out at like 92…

  18. Rebecca August 15th, 2007 at 11:16 am

I think the problem with Clippard was that he could win on the road, but he couldn’t win at home. There’s no doubting that some baseball players can’t handle Yankee Stadium, for sure, but I’m hoping Clippard gets another chance sometime next season.

  19. Gustavo Pacheco August 15th, 2007 at 11:16 am

If by hard thrower you mean tops out at 91-92 then yes, Britton is a hard thrower. But you are right, it’s another fastball-slider combo.

  20. funky chicken August 15th, 2007 at 11:16 am

maybe they’re just waiting for him to get his groove back in the minors because he just came off the DL.

  21. DesignatedBlogger August 15th, 2007 at 11:18 am

I never understood why Brower was even with the team.

  22. Eddie August 15th, 2007 at 11:19 am

When will people realize that Britton was injured and they won’t take chances?

  23. Doug S August 15th, 2007 at 11:19 am

Bruney can hit 96 on the gun. I suspect that when Friday gets here that Bruney will be back and Henn sent back down.

  24. Mike Westchester August 15th, 2007 at 11:20 am

Brower deserved a chance for being good at Scranton.

  25. keithny August 15th, 2007 at 11:20 am

What is the exact rule on being eligible for the playoff roster? For arguments sake lets say Britton is called up SEPT 1 and is lights out in ~10 innings. Is he eligible even though he only pitched 3(?) innings this season prior to sept 1?

  26. Marc August 15th, 2007 at 11:21 am

I just hope Cashman or someone informed Joe that Edwar is sitting in the pen so he knows to use him. maybe needs to do a head count once in a while to see who is on his team.

  27. EricVA August 15th, 2007 at 11:22 am

Well 92 mph is pretty hard in my mind. I can’t throw that hard. :-p

  28. Jimmy D August 15th, 2007 at 11:25 am

Bruney can hit 96 on the gun, unfortunately he can’t hit the strike zone. I’d be surprised to see him back before Sept 1, barring a trade of Farnsy before then

  29. Josh August 15th, 2007 at 11:25 am

Hmm I’m surprised to see Ramirez but up after his performance the other day with his control.

  30. whozat August 15th, 2007 at 11:25 am

“When will people realize that Britton was injured and they won’t take chances?”

He came off the DL weeks ago. Why would he be off the DL if having him pitch was “chancy”?

  31. hmmm August 15th, 2007 at 11:26 am

“I never understood why Brower was even with the team.”

he was on the team b/c he had been great all year at AAA.

i love the kids as much as anyone else, but he earned his shot as much as anyone. i’m not arguing he should be a big part of their plans, but he earned a 3 game trial.

he failed it, and now he is gone.

    seems reasonable to me.

  32. karlkole August 15th, 2007 at 11:27 am

Brower was brought up due to Stick Michael’s recommendation.

As it stand now, it wasn’t a good one.

What a contrast it is when you look at his numbers in AAA SWB and those in the Bronx. It doesn’t make any sense.

Maybe with his wife pregnant and giving birth after he was called up had something to do with, oh, never mind.

  33. Mr. Faded Glory August 15th, 2007 at 11:28 am

    keithny:

In that case, Britton could only be active on the post season roster if there’s a player who is added to the disabled list who otherwise would have been eligible for the post season. This is what happened with Francisco Rodriguez in 2002 for Anaheim.

So there would need to be an injury before Torre would be allowed to bury Britton in his post season bullpen.

  34. 38disasters.com August 15th, 2007 at 11:28 am

    yawn…

  35. whozat August 15th, 2007 at 11:30 am

“Hmm I’m surprised to see Ramirez but up after his performance the other day with his control.”

By “the other day” do you mean “a few weeks ago before he was sent down”? The guy has been lights out in AAA all year, but is a finesse pitcher. You sit him for two weeks, bring him in and then judge him when he fails?

  36. hmmm August 15th, 2007 at 11:30 am

“Is he eligible even though he only pitched 3(?) innings this season prior to sept 1?”

    no, unless someone gets injured.

  37. Mark August 15th, 2007 at 11:30 am

Either Britton or Bruney have a spot as soon as Cashman can peddle Farnsworth.

  38. Marc August 15th, 2007 at 11:31 am

    Whozat,
Not only that, Joe brought him in with the bases loaded!

  39. EricVA August 15th, 2007 at 11:32 am

“What a contrast it is when you look at his numbers in AAA SWB and those in the Bronx. It doesn’t make any sense.”

It does make sense. One is the minor leagues and one is the major leagues. Big difference.

  40. Parker August 15th, 2007 at 11:32 am

    It’s not about throwing hard.

    It’s about throwing strikes

  41. DesignatedBlogger August 15th, 2007 at 11:32 am

Just that I didn’t see Brower ever being better than, say, Bruney. But I guess he earned a look-see, and now he’s out of the equation. I hope Edwar is given a chance and doesn’t just sit out in the pen rotting.

  42. Mark Z August 15th, 2007 at 11:33 am

I’m sick of hearing about how great Britton and Edwar are.

  43. Enter Sandman August 15th, 2007 at 11:33 am

A good thing to check out. Scroll all the way through – it’s worth seeing.

    http://www.yankeetradition.com.....tadium.htm

  44. Chevy August 15th, 2007 at 11:33 am

    Thanks for the update Pete!

Good to see the Brower experiment is officially OVER.

Big game today!! GET EM PHIL!!!!

  45. DKA August 15th, 2007 at 11:35 am

Where can we put money down on things like “Jim Brower on the other end of a Jose Offerman bat-attack somewhere in the independent leagues next year?”

    Good riddance.

  46. EricVA August 15th, 2007 at 11:35 am

I don’t think you guys understand bullpen roles. Edwar is not being brought up to pitch every other night. He’s there in case there’s a blowout or a starter only goes 4 or 5. The Yankees have good relievers to pitch 7-9 if they are winning.

  47. neil August 15th, 2007 at 11:35 am

I think White will get called up when Farnsworth gets traded

  48. Doug S August 15th, 2007 at 11:36 am

Edwar will be wearing the special “velcro pinstriped” pants he wore when he first got the call. I hope Joe gets him a real pair because he wore the velcro out of the other ones sitting in the pen all that time.

  49. 38disasters.com August 15th, 2007 at 11:36 am

    mark z, i second that.

  50. Martin August 15th, 2007 at 11:36 am

I don’t think we should be too worried about not having a lights-out left-hander out of the bullpen (that doesn’t mean it wouldn’t be nice). Anyone not have confidence Joba can get Ortiz, Carl Crawford, etc. out?! I sure do. Let’s focus more on pitchers that can get outs, period. And don’t underestimate Edwar’s change-up to lefties. Someone also asked about the long man; I would think its Henn now. I thought they were both good moves today.

  51. Taylor August 15th, 2007 at 11:37 am

Maybe Torre will actually use Edwar this time around… And Britton is better than Henn. The pen is close to what it should be though.

  52. mel August 15th, 2007 at 11:37 am

This is the dumbest thing to come out of Phillips’ head:

Al (Basking Ridge, NJ): Mr. Phillips, if you are the Yankees GM, would you make a trade for Johan Santana and what pieces would you be willing to part with? Thanks.

Steve Phillips: (11:32 AM ET ) I would do just about anything to get him. If money is a factor, and I am the Yankees, I would not resign A-Rod and use that money for Santana. Instead of giving A-Rod 36 mil. per year, why not give Santana 22 mil. and go out and get a 14 mil. per year 3B. I would put Hughes in the deal, along with Cabrera and another young prospect if neccesary. Hughes may blossom as time goes on, but he is not going to be Santana-like.

  53. pat August 15th, 2007 at 11:38 am

If Brower is DFA, who fills the spot on the 40 man roster?

  54. Bronx Cheer August 15th, 2007 at 11:38 am

You’ve got to measure minor league performance against age differential for the level. Brower was a (washed up) MLB vet throwing one inning stints against kids and other AAAA players like 4Andy. Just like Colter Bean, you’ve got to greatly discount Brower’s numbers at Scanton when you factor in his age/experience relative to the kids he’s getting out. When you factor in that his stuff is nothing special, you really can’t say you’re surprised that he isn’t producing similar numbers in the bigs.

  55. karlkole August 15th, 2007 at 11:38 am

Throwing hard with a fastball/slider combo was and is still not the issue with Bruney, Proctor, and Farnsworth.

It is about CONTROL and not giving up walks as soon as you are brought into a game.

Joba is also fastball/slider combo but he’s not going anywhere except up to a league of his own.

Proctor’s been traded, Bruney demoted to AAA, & Farnsworth has been buried so deep into the backend of the bullpen that another few weeks of this and he will be begging to pay the rest of his bloated salary back just to get out of the Bronx and salvage his career.

  56. EricVA August 15th, 2007 at 11:39 am

Britton may be better than Henn, but is Britton gonna throw 3-4 innings if a pitcher gets knocked out in the 2nd inning? I didn’t think so.

  57. .. August 15th, 2007 at 11:39 am

Does anyone know what’s this feud that’s going on between Torre / Cashman and Britton?
Or this Britton really this incompetent as a human being / baseball player?

  58. Marc August 15th, 2007 at 11:39 am

    Mel,

Philips really knows young talent…. thats why he traded away Kazmir for bag of @#$!

  59. Eddie August 15th, 2007 at 11:42 am

If we lose the WC by one game it is Colter Bean and Igawas fault for that Seattle game

  60. swo August 15th, 2007 at 11:42 am

pat, my guess is Jose Veras gets taken off the 60-day DL if Brower is DFA’d. He’s been pitching in AAA for a while now. He wouldn’t get called up before September though, so don’t worry.

  61. Bloomy August 15th, 2007 at 11:43 am

Phillips didn’t trade Kazmir. Duquette did.

  62. Bronx Cheer August 15th, 2007 at 11:44 am

I would imagine that the 40 man spot will be saved just in case another spot start is needed, someone comes off the 60 (Man-Cave-Itch), or to bring a Sept callup like Nieves (3rd catcher), Gardner/Christian (pinch running), or some guy who would have to be added to the 40 for Rule 5 purposes in offseason anyway (e.g, E Duncan).

  63. jennifer August 15th, 2007 at 11:46 am

Bloomy it is so funny everyone lays that trade on Phillips. He deserves it though he is an ass. I can’t stand him.

  64. migames August 15th, 2007 at 11:46 am

    Steve Phillips strikes again.
    what an idiot

  65. stuart August 15th, 2007 at 11:47 am

phillips is an idiot eho cares what he says..He said melky is a 4th or 5th outfielder a few weeks ago.. He may wind up being that but at 23 he needs the chance to see…To me he does not look like a 5th OF.

the buillpen moves are fine but really Britton deserves a chance over Henn(I know he is a lefty)..

he got 3 innings this yr. and is doing well at SWB and pitched well for the Orioles last yr. I do not get it!!!!!

  66. gianthinker August 15th, 2007 at 11:47 am

Anyone know who the starter for thursdays game are? I’m going to the game.

  67. John Long Island August 15th, 2007 at 11:47 am

How many teams have a lights out lefty?

    Maybe 3?

And the Pirates are doing real well with theirs.

  68. 38disasters.com August 15th, 2007 at 11:47 am

steve phillips defies logic. its as if he were on some other plane of consciousness, one where the yankees have the most money in the majors and yet have to go worrying about saving money on 3rd base in order to get santana, in the process getting rid of the potential home run king and the next great pitcher in hughes.

“hughes MAY blossom as time GOES ON”… man that eunuch makes me so angry when he says sh** like that.

  69. The Godfather August 15th, 2007 at 11:47 am

Glad to see Edwar get another chance up here. He needs to pitch to be effective so maybe Torre can get something out of him in the 7th inning on the days that Joba is being rested. As far as the debate over Henn and Britton, my guess is that Torre opted for the additional LHP because Villone isn’t all that overpowering on lefties and without Myers here anymore perhaps Henn will be used as a situational lefty.

  70. mel August 15th, 2007 at 11:47 am

    Marc,

I know Phillips is off the wall but that was off the Richter scale.

Why not try for A-rod (he’s still convinced he’s gone), keep Cabrera & Hughes, and pursue Santana in free agency. Like Posada, I think that Johan would like to see how much he’s really worth. Every A+ free agent knows that the Yankees are at the end of the payoff contract rainbow. If you don’t get Santana you plug in Chamberlain who (gasp!) can also strike out guys at pretty good rate.

Guess Phillips didn’t get the memo on Cashman. He’s not trading the farm away anymore.

  71. mike August 15th, 2007 at 11:48 am

    Projected lineup
    MelkyCf
    Jeter-SS
    Abreu-RF

    Matsui-LF
    Posada-C
    Duncan-DH
    Betemit-2b

  73. Eddie August 15th, 2007 at 11:49 am

Does everyone not get the fact that Britton was just hurt????

And spent time on the DL??

  74. mel August 15th, 2007 at 11:50 am

    Eddie,

Heard Britton was on DL, wasn’t it short and what was it for?

  75. Deep to Left August 15th, 2007 at 11:50 am

Why don’t people understand why Brower was given a brief shot? He pitched 44 innings in AAA this year. ERA of 1.65. Whip of 1.15. 40 K’s and 11 BB’s. IMHO, he clearly earned his brief trial on the big club.

  76. keithny August 15th, 2007 at 11:50 am

    AHAHAH

Adam (Flushing, NY): What are the chances that A-Rod signs with the red Sox next season? What would they have to give up in order to get him.

SportsNation Steve Phillips: (11:34 AM ET ) Well if he is a FA they would not have to give up anything, and the Yanks would never trade him to the Red Sox. But it will cost somewhere inthe range for 30 million dollars per year for 8 or more seaons to sign him. remmeber this, he is a great player, *but he has yet to win a title*, and baseball is not just an individual game. You need to have a balanced and deep roster to win, and no matter what your payroll, giving one guy 30 mil. limits what you can do with your roster.

  77. Brian C August 15th, 2007 at 11:50 am

“…we need a W today. can’t let baltimore be the only team to take series from us since the AS break…”

One problem, they already have taken one series from us since the break.

  78. Penningtons Arm August 15th, 2007 at 11:51 am

You don’t trade 21 yr olds with ace potential.

    It just doesn’t happen.

  79. migames August 15th, 2007 at 11:51 am

Im very glad that Steve Phillips is not the yankee GM

Mike (Fresno): True or false – the Yankees will make the playoffs.

Steve Phillips: False. The easy thing to say right now is that they will make it because of how they have played out of the All-Star break. But the reason they are winning now is because of their offense, which is very, very good. But to be a playoff team you have to pitch. And I have my doubts that the offense will continue to go as it is going, and I do not think they have the pitching to bail them out when the offense is not there.

  80. Drew August 15th, 2007 at 11:51 am

    Yahoooooooooooo.

Now get me Britton and dump Farnsworthless.

  81. swo August 15th, 2007 at 11:52 am

Let up on Steve Phillips a bit. There are plenty of writers out there that deserve our ire much more (Bill Simmons, Peter Gammons)

  82. Jimmy D August 15th, 2007 at 11:52 am

I don’t agree with EricVA that the Yankees are set 7-9. They have Joba, who can pitch 2 innings, but then requires two nights off, and Vizcaino, who should really be a 1 inning pitcher, and who can probably use a little more rest. Villone is Villone, which is not very great, and who knows what is going on with Farnsworth. I think that Ramirez should be given the opportunity to get himself in the mix somewhere in there, he is not a long man.

  83. Rebecca August 15th, 2007 at 11:53 am

I’m really glad Phillips isn’t the Yankees GM.

It would be really nice, though, if the earth kind of swallowed him whole…

  84. We want Britton. August 15th, 2007 at 11:53 am

    We want Britton.
    We want Bruney.
    We want Beam.
What the heck, forget the stats, the Killer B’s just a cool label for a bullpen.

  85. Josh August 15th, 2007 at 11:53 am

I’m thinking Abreu won’t be in the line-up today. Not very good career numbers against Bedard but then again who does.

  86. wiki August 15th, 2007 at 11:54 am

“Hmm I’m surprised to see Ramirez but up after his performance the other day with his control.

“By “the other dayâ€? do you mean “a few weeks ago before he was sent downâ€?? The guy has been lights out in AAA all year, but is a finesse pitcher. You sit him for two weeks, bring him in and then judge him when he fails?”

im pretty sure hes referring to edwars last minor league outing where he hit a batter and walked a couple.

  87. mike August 15th, 2007 at 11:55 am

maybe they stick duncan in RF ?

  88. swo August 15th, 2007 at 11:55 am

    Ew.

In no way do I want to be associated with Houston. They can have their killer B’s along with their effeminate names, lol

  89. mel August 15th, 2007 at 11:55 am

He thinks that the Mariners will make the playoffs, when he himself states that only 2 other teams have made it with the starting pitchers record was below .500.

So he thinks that the Mariners offense is good enough to overcome that stat, but that the Yankees offense isn’t good enough to overcome its pitching?

  90. swo August 15th, 2007 at 11:56 am

mike, I doubt it. Abreu is better against lefties than Giambi or Damon, as far as I know. So he’ll be in RF with Shelley at DH, most likely.

  91. Rebecca August 15th, 2007 at 11:56 am

    We Want Britton and swo–

Don’t get so down on the B’s, they’ve helped us in the past!

    Y’know, like *B*abe, *B*ucky, *B*uckner, *B*oone….

(by that logic, this year’s october hero? Wilson Betemit!)

  92. chris in fairfield August 15th, 2007 at 11:57 am

the o’s are 7-4 vs. the yanks this year and with bedard on the mound ( easily one of the best young pitchers in the a.l. ) phil of the future has his work cut out for him . i am so happy brower and karstens are gone . see ya !!

  93. jennifer August 15th, 2007 at 11:57 am

I wonder if Steve thinks the Mets will make the playoffs? The only reason they will is because there division stinks. Their offense hasn’t done anything all year and i believe their pitching staff is smoke and mirrors.

One problem, they already have taken one series from us since the break.

but they’ve been sitting Abreu against the tough lefties the past couple times out, to avoid him altering his swing.

  97. TurnTwo August 15th, 2007 at 12:00 pm

actually, Steve Phillips said the other night he doesnt think the Mets will make the playoffs either.

The Mets may not be be playing well but they are the class of the NL.

  106. Adam August 15th, 2007 at 12:04 pm

Not really sure I understand the obsession with having a lefty in the pen if the lefties are crap like Villone and Henn.

  107. S.o.S.27 August 15th, 2007 at 12:04 pm

    KAJ,

    Did you mean Posada dh?

  108. Bob Michaels August 15th, 2007 at 12:04 pm

They left Britton at SWB as he was needed in the their race for a pennant at that level.

  109. jennifer August 15th, 2007 at 12:05 pm

duncan is in RF, molina is cathing and bettimit is batting second….posada DH…intresting

  111. Marc August 15th, 2007 at 12:06 pm

Damon can’t hit righty’s either, maybe he should always be benched!

  112. Lanny August 15th, 2007 at 12:06 pm

Anyone with a brain would hop off this Cleveland bus now.

    I’ve said it for weeks.

They don’t have the pitching. They have 2 decent starters and nothing else. And now they cant hit.

  113. swo August 15th, 2007 at 12:06 pm

Ah, Posada at DH. That’s something I hadn’t considered. Makes sense.

  114. Bob Michaels August 15th, 2007 at 12:06 pm

Britton will be up in Sept.Any news on the draftees, todays the day.

  115. mel August 15th, 2007 at 12:06 pm

    swo,

You’re right, but those guys are just haters.

Bill Simmons must be freaking out now, because he’s not written very much about the Yankees this year. He learned his lesson last year and said as much, when he wrote the Yankees off only to see them humiliate his beloved Sox.

Gammons at least gives Yankees some respect, if only because he’d look like an idiot if he didn’t. I’m sure he’s been told repeatedly that he’s a homer and being the HOF that he is, tries to be unbiased now. Maybe it was the near-death experience. Maybe he was warned he be stuck in Purgatory for all his sins against the Yankees.

Joe Morgan is just old, senile, and shaped by his experiences as a black player.

Phillips is just plain dumb on top of being a hater. Pete can you just innocently put up a Steve Phillips thread, maybe one complimenting him? We can take care of the rest. lol.

  116. swo August 15th, 2007 at 12:07 pm

Bob Michaels – the Minors have absolutely no say in how their rosters are shaped for the playoffs. Last year Matsui was rehabbing during the Eastern League championships. Go figure.

  117. 38disasters.com August 15th, 2007 at 12:07 pm

why would steve blues clues phillips think the mets were gonna make it, he got fired by them.

  118. Marc August 15th, 2007 at 12:09 pm

Philips makes all the sucker picks, like Cleveland and Seattle

  119. Josh August 15th, 2007 at 12:09 pm

It’s a good idea to stack the line-up with Righties. Maybe we can atleast get a couple runs off Bedard.

  120. Rufus August 15th, 2007 at 12:10 pm

How can you dislike Simmons? So hes a Boston lover. Big deal. He doesn’t pretend to be anything different. Plus hes funny.

  121. Bob Michaels August 15th, 2007 at 12:11 pm

Molina is catching, day game after night game, that does not preclude Posada entering as a PH if needed.
Bedard is tough on lefties.Perhaps the Yanks can play H&R and small ball, need a good pitched game.Todays heat i look for Joba in the 7th and Mo in the 9th.

  122. Bob Michaels August 15th, 2007 at 12:12 pm

    Ok Posada will DH?

  123. 38disasters.com August 15th, 2007 at 12:12 pm

  124. CaptainsCorner August 15th, 2007 at 12:13 pm

what is Torres obsession with Henn? Does he have good stuff?! Yes…But he NEVER ever throws strikes. He always looks like he gets way too scared of the strike zone. It

  125. Joe L August 15th, 2007 at 12:13 pm

I’m still chapped about them using Karstens last night knowing full well the guy didn’t have a prayer to go 5 (let alone 3).

You can tell me this whole “they didn’t want to start his clock” line about Kennedy all you want, but to a fan all the back office machinations are meaningless…there was a better starter in the minors with better stuff who was consciously left in the minors.

It was a bad decision and I hope the combination of the O’s routing us and us facing one of the best lefties in the game in back to back days doesn’t avalanche the run we had going which was based on our starting pitching doing the job and keeping us in the games.

Last night was a free for all and Karstens did not deserve a major league spot with that stuff.

I don’t care if he pitched with a broken leg, we didn’t owe him anything until he had better stuff that could get a major league player out. He had nothing. Pete’s logic last night about the Yankees owing Karstens something was ridiculous.

I’m glad he and Brower are out. I like Edwar getting a 2nd chance and I hope to God Henn can do something with this callup because I think Bruney was a better pitcher than Brower and might have deserved the recall.

I’m definitely a fan of the idea of just bringing up the young arms for the pen and getting some of the retreads out. Clearly there is something about Britton that is making them hesitate though.

Does anyone know if Britton only has 1 option left? Perhaps the O’s sent him up and down so many times that the Yanks can only do it once or risk exposing him to waivers? That might have something to do with the hesitation.

That said, the young arms honestly cannot do worse than what some of the guys have done and the only reason we’ve laid off the ineffective relievers lately is that the starting pitching has gone longer in games.

  126. mel August 15th, 2007 at 12:14 pm

See that the problem. Guys like Olney stick with their picks. They say that. “I know this team is charging but I make my picks and stick with them.”

Phillips picked the Yankees to when the whole enchilada on April 1st. One of the few, so he’d look pretty smart right now. But he needs to say stupid things now for ratings? Who’s now? Steve Phillips!

  127. Doug S August 15th, 2007 at 12:14 pm

Bruney needs to be called back up Friday. He’ll pitch today at SWB to show he has got his control issues worked out then Henn or Edwar will be back to SWB barring a Farns trade.

  128. Jake August 15th, 2007 at 12:14 pm

An actual bench with options on it?????

    WOW!!

what is Torres obsession with Henn? Does he have good stuff?! Yes…But he NEVER ever throws strikes. He always looks like he gets way too scared of the strike zone. It always takes him 30 pitches to get threw an inning. They always send him down and then bring him back hoping that he has changed. He doesnt seem mentally ready for the majors. Where is Britton???!!!

  131. Brandon August 15th, 2007 at 12:15 pm

finally we make a good move. I agree w/ Ramireez back hey after sitting for 2 weeks I’m glad he didn’t forget what a ball looks like. Henn throws 95 mph an upgrade over Villone atleast until we try to make a deal for Damaso of Pittsburgh. Shelly is in today’s lineup and thank god Joe isn’t doing what Grady Little did w/ Betemit you play this guy make him work on his consistency on both sides of the plate & get guys rest. Lets WHOOP Bedard today.

  132. NDYank August 15th, 2007 at 12:16 pm

It really is wonderful that we have a bench now that we can have a game like this, giving some of the regular guys a day off, and not need to feel like we’re playing a giveaway game.

If only our ‘pen was like that…I mean, we’re trying now, but I just hope it’s not too little too late.

  135. Queens Blvd August 15th, 2007 at 12:17 pm

    When will people realize this.

    Farnsworth isn’t being traded!!!

Just hope he starts pitching better and becomes an option in the pen.

Don’t get so down on the B’s, they’ve helped us in the past!

    Y’know, like *B*abe, *B*ucky, *B*uckner, *B*oone….

(by that logic, this year’s october hero? Wilson Betemit!) ”

In 2004 , we had *B*ubba Crosby. Too bad that didn’t workout for us – probably because he didn’t even play in the ALCS. *B*ubba would have been a very fitting name to add to the list.

    Good riddance.

-Chill out dude. The guy has been pitching for a long time and he just had a baby. Maybe he’s got a lot on his mind…

  140. EY August 15th, 2007 at 12:27 pm

    LOL Steve Phillips.
    What else is new?

That I think is even DUMBER than Melky for Gag-me he proposed a while ago.

I can’t believe an idiot like him gets paid as an analyst. ESPN should hire me instead. I might not know a lot of baseball, but at least I won’t be making stupid suggestions like Hughes for Santana, or let A-rod walk, or Melky/Kennedy for Gag-me. And I’m cheap. I’ll ask for $10,000 per year only.

  141. Jay August 15th, 2007 at 12:31 pm

Why hasn’t anybody mentioned AA pitcher Scott Patterson? He is pitching lights out (0.99 ERA, 77K, 13BB, 63.2 IP) which are comparable numbers to Ian Kennedy (1.87 ERA, 150K, 48BB, 134 IP) He is 28 yrs old, and probably more seasoned. He would make a good long relief pitcher for the yankees. Does anyone have any comments?

  142. 38disasters.com August 15th, 2007 at 12:33 pm

i have a problem with olney sticking by his picks. the teams have changed, situations change. when he picked his projections the yankees had no clemens, no hughes, no chamberlain, pavano was going to the doctor, and igawa was our 5th starter. things change, trades are made, people get injured. i think hes a fool for sticking to his picks just because he chose them in the beginning of the season and doesn’t want to look like a flip flopper.

  143. nate August 15th, 2007 at 12:43 pm

The more I read from NY beat writers (Peter, Kepner, Sweeny) the more I absolutely detest everything out of Olney’s mouth.

ESPN doesn’t know NY. Period. I agree with your Olney comment 38disasters.

  144. Neil B. August 15th, 2007 at 1:04 pm

    @38disasters.com:

I think you’re being a little harsh on Olney. He’s just sticking to his original picks, that’s all – he doesn’t deny that the Yankees are sizzling hot of late and are clearly on the upswing.

Let’s be honest – the Yankees still have a shaky bullpen (Farnsworth? Villone? Ramirez and Henn are still unknown entities), and the starting pitching is certainly aging (Mussina and Clemens haven’t been at their best this year). It’s entirely foreseeable that the Yankees miss out on the playoffs, although the likelihood has fallen dramatically over the past few weeks.

I think he’s starting to realize his preseason picks were wrong, but he doesn’t want to abandon them as a matter of habit. Whatever, it doesn’t really matter what his picks are; but he knows the Yankees are a significantly improved team and has been stating as much in his blog entries.

Olney knows the Yankees. Not as much as Peter or Sweeny Murti might, but he knows the Yankees. Read more than just his chat transcripts.

  146. David (In Seattle) August 15th, 2007 at 6:24 pm

Question- the info posted here about Britton doesn’t match what I’ve read elsewhere; you guys say he’s fastball/slider at 91 mph. Other reports said he was fastball/curveball at 94 mph that looks like 96 because of a little deception in his delivery -his belly hides the ball :-)
Anyone know the facts for certain?
