Update on unsigned draft picks

Brian Cashman insists that Andrew Brackman has not been signed despite a flurry of reports saying he has agreed to a contract worth a minimum of $4.5 million with three options that could bring it to $13 million.

“We have no deal,” Cashman said.

However, it appears that it may only be some legalese holding it up. Part of that could be medical as there are reports that Brackman is already in Birmingham, Ala., and could have Tommy John surgery before the end of the week.

The Yankees have confirmed the signings of:

C Austin Romine (2) $500,000
3B Brad Suttle (4) $1.3 milion
C Chase Weems (6) $450,000
OF Taylor Grote (8) $250,000
Carmen Angelini (10) $1 million

The highest pick to go unsigned was 16th-round selection Dan Mahoney, a high-school right-hander from Massachusetts.

Brackman is the only draft pick left that they are still talking to, Cashman said.

angelini is the big win right? Was he the ss who was set to go to Rice? if so, they say he’s a big time prospect

  2. J in Columbia August 15th, 2007 at 6:12 pm

Yes … I do believe that Angelini is a big win … Brackman could be big, too … he has huge upside.

Thanks for some good news on this dreary day.

CMON PETE! GIVE US AN UPDATE ON MO!

  6. Mo August 15th, 2007 at 6:22 pm

Great stuff. Thats what all big market clubs should be doing, taking guys with signability issues in later rounds rather than hoping to get lucky on org type guys.

  7. Dr. Acula August 15th, 2007 at 6:23 pm

Why did Brackman wait to fix his elbow?

Concerns about surgery existed prior to the draft.

I’ve never heard of complications occuring with TJ surgery.

His agent had the money to pay for the procedure.

I don’t see how waiting would have any practical affect on his contract. If it did, than I would understand why he would wait.

In the end, it only delays his eventual return to competitive pitching by 2 to 3 months. which in baseball terms, is half a season.

  8. Brian M August 15th, 2007 at 6:26 pm

I dont like this Brackman deal. He is set for 18 months rehab and is really really raw. Betances raw. Betances is in single A right now and probably 2 yrs from NY, maybe more. Bearing in mind that big pitchers normally take a long time to refine their mechanics (Randy J took half his career!) he problaly wont make the bigs for 5 yrs.

Anyway he cant possibly make NY in the 4 yrs of the deal. If we want him to produce we have to pick up the options. So for $4.5M we get nothing if he is behind schedule. Or for $13M we get him for 3 yrs before Boras puts him on the market for a $50M deal.

His upside isnt so great it is worth setting that kind of precident. He isnt better than Joba, Hughes, Betances or McAllister. But will get way more money than all of them. And he’s injured. Makes no sense to me. Especially as a major league deal. Just horrible. Time we stood up to Boras.

  9. Ed FL August 15th, 2007 at 6:26 pm

Peter, has Pat Venditte, switch pitcher , signed with The Yankees? I’m curious. Thanks

  10. dontfirecash August 15th, 2007 at 6:27 pm

Last I heard, Pat Vendiette said he will be going back to Creighton

  11. frits August 15th, 2007 at 6:31 pm

    whats the update on rivera??

  12. BBB August 15th, 2007 at 6:33 pm

Great, GREAT news on Angelini. Makes this otherwise very unexciting day, exciting. Thanks for the update Pete!!

  13. whoa August 15th, 2007 at 6:33 pm

Rivera has his usual August dead arm problem. It’s part of getting old.

If part of the hold up with Brackman is making some of the guaranteed money contingent on his physical condition, they are being smart.

  14. SJ44 August 15th, 2007 at 6:34 pm

Pat is going back to Creighton. Brackman is not as raw as Betances. His deal is heavily weighted in the Yankees favor.

Only way he gets the big money (the 13+ million) is if he is healthy. He signed for roughly half the guaranteed money the Tigers gave Porcello.

The NC State coach overused Brackman this year. The guy should be fired for abusing him.

The other tough signs? To get them all under contract is great because there are some studs in that group.

Angelini is the best SS prospects the Yankees have had since Jeter. Suttle, Weems and Grote are guys that have great upside.

This draft could end up being for position players what last years draft was for pitching prospects (Kennedy, Chamberlain, Betances, McAllister, Melancon and McCutcheon).

Great work all around to get these guys signed.

  15. frits August 15th, 2007 at 6:38 pm

i hope it’s nothing more serious than that, and i hope it’s not that he’s just “losing it” and some have suggested on this blog’s comments.

that loss hurt, but go twins, i guess.

  16. whoa August 15th, 2007 at 6:41 pm

Mo is losing his stamina, not his overall effectiveness. He has to be handled with more care at this point in his career.

  17. SJ44 August 15th, 2007 at 6:41 pm

How is Mariano “losing it”? Last week, he blew away the Blue Jays. Friday night, he blew away the Indians. He’s had a couple of rough outings.

You don’t “lose it” in 4 days.

FYI, I saw Brackman pitch twice this year. My nephew plays in the ACC. First outing, he was awesome. Second outing, he pitched well. However, it was a cold day, and their coach left him in too long. Couldn’t have been good for his elbow.

They get him healthy, you are looking at big guy, with a Mid-90′s fastball and a NASTY curveball. Unhittable, really.

Well worth the gamble to take him, IMO. Just hope Dr. Andrews works him magic with him.

  18. BBB August 15th, 2007 at 6:45 pm

SJ, wondering if you have any of that scouting report-type info. on Angelini? I have put his name in every imaginable search engine and have found almost nothing. But from what little I have read on Yankee blogs he’s a great, great prospect. Plus I just have a good feeling about him, for whatever reason. Either way can’t wait to track his progress in the minors!

Funny, I know someone through a family friend that would have been teammates with him at Rice next year…oh well, his loss, our gain. :)

  19. Brian M August 15th, 2007 at 6:51 pm

I like the position players this yr but the more I look at the nmbers for Brackman the more I hope they miss the deadline and get compensation next yr. We wont be losing time really cos Brackman is sidelined for 18 months anyway.

Unless the money is contingent on his health, the clock starts ticking when he starts playing, it is a minor league deal, and the option years costs are dependant on his making the 25 man roster, then I say let him slide.

  20. Brian M August 15th, 2007 at 6:52 pm

Great news on Suttle and Angelini though. And we look very catching rich in the low levels of the minors now. With Cervelli maybe a year away this is becoming a really position of strength.

  21. whoa August 15th, 2007 at 6:54 pm

I think it shows that the Yankees (Oppenheimer) have a conviction about Brackman’s talent and that they really don’t care about money that isn’t subject to a luxury tax.

  22. S.o.S.27 August 15th, 2007 at 6:55 pm

    Seattle losing 2-1 top 9th.

  23. Brian M August 15th, 2007 at 6:57 pm

I’m more worried about how long we’ll have control of him once he actually matures into a good major league pitcher which will take time. Does a major league deal mean we still have control of him, to offer arbitration, once it expires? Or would he be a free agent?

  24. Zune August 15th, 2007 at 7:01 pm

Is it a sure deal that he needs surgery?

  25. Yankee Boy August 15th, 2007 at 7:02 pm

So much better to spend/gamble $$ on draft choices with upside than on Pavano, Farnsworth, et al.

  26. CB August 15th, 2007 at 7:05 pm

I really don’t understand what leverage Brackman had in this negotiation.

He was a junior with a bad elbow – he’s already 22 I believe. What was he going to do – go back to college after getting drafted in the first round because the deal wasn’t to his liking?

If he needed TJ then he’s have to take a medical redshirt and then rush back to make the following season. How high would he have gone in the next draft after all of that?

Alternatively, if he didn’t need TJ would he risk blowing out his elbow next year in the middle of the college season? Then where would he go in the draft.

The whole thing is puzzling – we’ll see when the details come out.

The world of Boras is really bizarre. The ARod negotiations are going to be something else.

  27. Joel August 15th, 2007 at 7:10 pm

Who do you think leaked the Porcello signing the day before the deadline? The terms of the deal could be complete BS floated by Boras to create leverage for the rest of his picks.

  28. J in Columbia August 15th, 2007 at 7:13 pm

The word on Angelini from BA:

Angelini played third base as a high school junior in deference to Josh Prince (now starting at the University of Texas), and he’ll face tough competition with Texas high schooler Rick Hague for Rice’s shortstop job next spring if he attends college. Scouts have no question that Angelini can handle the position, as he has a plus arm and solid range. He has no glaring weakness in his game. He’s more ready than Hague to contribute offensively at the college level, with superior speed and raw power. As much as scouts like Angelini, some question whether he’s going to be more than just a good college player–though that seems to be selling him short. He’s not considered as tough to sign as Hague, but it will be difficult to lure Angelini away from the Owls.

  29. CB August 15th, 2007 at 7:13 pm

It’s pretty obvious boras was using the porcello deal to better the deals for the rest of his clients – no surprise none of his first rounders were signed.

I don’t think the porcello signing is similar to brackman’s however because of the health issues.

  30. Wolf In Pinstripes August 15th, 2007 at 7:17 pm

Totally agreed with SJ re: Rivera.

The fact of the matter is that Mo is not 25 any more. Even at his age, which is still not horribly “old” – nobody can say they wouldn’t take him over most relievers younger than him.

He’s going to have a bad game or two here and there. I’d almost use the phrase “entitled to”, but that’s a little charitable sounding and I’m sure Mo would be the forst to say he doesn’t want any kind of charity.

Like SJ said, he was dominant against Toronto and Cleveland last week. Those games weigh heavier in my mind than today’s does.

Every year, there’s a team that just totally aggravates NY. More specifically, a sub-.500 team. Tampa Bay has done that lately, the Twins did it a few years ago, and this year Baltimore has played that role to a T. On paper, it makes no sense for those kind of dynamics to occur, but they do.

We’re having a couple of games where we’ve cooled off from the mashing streak. It’ll come back around quickly.

Oh, and Shelley Duncan bleepin’ RAWKS. Whird.

I actually saw Brackman last summer in the Cape Cod summer league when he really made his name. It was pretty unbelievable, as he was hitting 99 on the gun.

  32. J in Columbia August 15th, 2007 at 7:44 pm

What I don’t get is why the Yankees are going to sign Brackman knowing he needs surgery but not sign Chris Carpenter who’s already had TJ surgery and seemed to make a successful comeback. Did he not pitch well in a summer league somewhere?

  33. RJPinstripes August 15th, 2007 at 8:04 pm

Carmen Angelini a huge signing by our Yanks! And yes, we have built up our catching prospects!

  34. SJ44 August 15th, 2007 at 8:18 pm

Angelini is very athletic. Kind of long and lean, like Jeter was, in high school.

He can run, hits real well and has good baseball instincts. He was well coached in HS.

Brackman is real, real good. His upside is as big as anybody’s in the draft. That’s why he is a “sign and stash” guy.

The deal is weighed heavily on his health.

Look at it this way. The Yankees signed 20 guys in this draft for about 1/4 the cost of Carl Pavano.

One, Justin Snyder in Staten Island, already looks like a steal.

What are the odds they can’t get more for their buck than they got for Pavano? I’d say, its weighed heavily in the Yankees favor.

When you are a big market team, you make moves like this. They are no lose moves.

  35. Aram August 15th, 2007 at 8:21 pm

excellent news !! I have a great feeling about Angelini

  36. Brandon August 15th, 2007 at 9:21 pm

Suttle, Angelini and Brackman on the same night

    YES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  37. Sinjin August 15th, 2007 at 10:07 pm

Anybody heard anything about Greg Holle (PG player of the year for New York). I thought there was a chance that he could be signed since he was from New York. I know he had a commitment to TCU.

  38. Brandon August 15th, 2007 at 10:43 pm

Sinjin Holle decided to go to college

  39. Wood August 16th, 2007 at 12:28 am
