Game 122: Tigers at Yankees

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Aug 17, 2007 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Here is the lineup:

YANKEES
Damon CF
Jeter SS
Abreu RF
Rodriguez 3B
Posada C
Matsui LF
Giambi DH
Cano 2B
Phillip 1B
Pettitte LHP

Pregame chatter: Sorry about the troll. If anybody’s interested pursuing a complaint, let me know and I will gladly send you his IP address. It could be time to require registration, which is something I’m against because I want people to comment. But as the blog becomes more popular, it becomes more popular with sociopaths.

Sorry for the problems. Meanwhile thanks to Brian Heyman for calling me with the lineup.

UPDATE, 9:36 p.m.: Full disclosure, I’m watching “High School Musical 2″ with my niece, who is enthralled. But based on the play-by-play, it sounds like The Big G hit a bomb to right.

UPDATE, 10:07 p.m.: Eric Gagne just blew another save for Boston. Angels threatening to take the lead in the ninth. It’s amazing how bad he has been. They lost Pabelbon and Okajima in Game 1.

UPDATE, 11:17 p.m.: Joba gave up a hit? Shocking. Quite a job by Andy Pettitte. Based on his last two starts, he has himself back together. That is very important as they move forward.

  1. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Jon Sterling oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named harold) August 17th, 2007 at 5:58 pm

    perfect lineup

  2. THU August 17th, 2007 at 5:58 pm

Man I like Giambi off the bench a whole lot more. Seems like the opposing managers fear him more and he seems to embrace that role as a pinch hitter.

  3. Pauly One August 17th, 2007 at 6:00 pm

Wow – LHP starting for Tigers and no Shell Can in the lineup.

  4. hh August 17th, 2007 at 6:00 pm

I don’t like the three lefties in a row — Giambi, Matsui, Cano… I feel like that could be fixed.

not that Detroit has any shut down lefty out of the pen or anything…

  5. Ed August 17th, 2007 at 6:01 pm

    Where is the MelkMan?

  6. Viper August 17th, 2007 at 6:01 pm

I said this in the previous thread, but bears repeating:

Damon is a career .471 hitter (8-17) against Robertson while Giambi is a career .600 hitter (6-10) against him.

That’s why Melky and Duncan are sitting against the lefty.

  7. Rebecca August 17th, 2007 at 6:03 pm

I don’t like Melky sitting, we can use him on defense, but at least he’s available later.

Any word on any possible game delays? It’s raining pretty bad just northwest of the City

  8. Viper August 17th, 2007 at 6:05 pm

Melky hasn’t had a day off since since 7/20.

He needs a day off sooner or later so tonight makes sense.

  9. Michael T August 17th, 2007 at 6:06 pm

Sir Phillip the Dead Bat back in auto-out nine hole.

  10. NJ August 17th, 2007 at 6:08 pm

I love Torre, but IMO Duncan should be in as the DH over Giambi. Maybe Giambi has great numbers off of him or something is up that I dont know about though.

  11. Marius August 17th, 2007 at 6:10 pm

    Bright and sunny here.

I don’t know if Damon in center is the right move. Melky should be in center and Damon should be DH and Giambi waiting on the bench.

I have a nice feeling about the game tonight.

Can I hear a “LET’S GO YANKEES” from everyone!!!

  12. ace August 17th, 2007 at 6:10 pm

    giambi is 6-10 off robertson

  13. mel August 17th, 2007 at 6:12 pm

    *Let’s Go Yankees!*

  14. John L August 17th, 2007 at 6:12 pm

“Damon is a career .471 hitter (8-17) against Robertson while Giambi is a career .600 hitter (6-10) against him.”

Can you say “small sample size?”

  15. ROY August 17th, 2007 at 6:14 pm

I hope we open a thundershower of baseballs in the outfield bleachers on this mole-puncher.

  16. jennifer August 17th, 2007 at 6:14 pm

Thanks for taking care of the guy.

I’d be for registration. This blog has become very popular and there has to be some way to control these morons who come here.

  17. ROY August 17th, 2007 at 6:14 pm

    JOhn L

    that’s still pretty good though…

  18. nate c. August 17th, 2007 at 6:15 pm

it still boggles my mind we pay giambi as much as we do to have him as a pinch hitter…but it seems like he’s really good or really really bad

  19. jennifer August 17th, 2007 at 6:15 pm

It is pouring at the stadium, but I think the game will be played but be delayed.

  20. Devon August 17th, 2007 at 6:17 pm

Phillips can’t hit left handers I don’t know why he is playing and Shelly is on the bench. Another bone head Torre move. Torre always trying to mess around with the lineup.

  21. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Jon Sterling oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named harold) August 17th, 2007 at 6:17 pm

yea im for registration to. jennifer what did the troll say i missed it

  22. Lori August 17th, 2007 at 6:18 pm

Meanwhile it is pouring here at the Stadium. Here’s hoping it stops soon and we can play some baseball.

  23. kasey August 17th, 2007 at 6:19 pm

whatever gets them a win at this point.

    registration is a good idea.

  24. ROY August 17th, 2007 at 6:20 pm

I hope it gets delayed. Stuck at work. On a Friday…stinks.

  25. Joe from Long Island August 17th, 2007 at 6:21 pm

    Peter –
It must be an awful lot of work to keep this blog going. I am very grateful, I have really appreciated this forum and the analysis that is provided (by you and other respondents).

As a side note, Rick Carpiniello has done some very nice columns lately. Please pass it on.

  26. Viper August 17th, 2007 at 6:21 pm

    Hey John L,

When your team has only faced a guy a few times, all you have are small sample sizes.

    C’mon, have some common sense.

  27. jennifer August 17th, 2007 at 6:22 pm

I don’t want to repeat it. But it was very childish and disgusting.

roy I get out of work early on Fridays :P at least for the next 3 weeks. :(

  28. Big Johnson August 17th, 2007 at 6:23 pm

    Lori,

Make sure you keep us updated on the weather situation. :) I had great seats for tonight but had to cough them due to previous engagement.

Pete – There needs to be registration, its time. At this point your blog has substantial traffic, and we should be aiming for quality, not quantity. I find myself not commenting when the nonsense becomes insufferable.

We should aim for well substantiated and cogent analysis. Not unrelenting voluminous gibberish.

    BJ

  29. ROY August 17th, 2007 at 6:24 pm

    Jennifer,

Oh I am suppose to too…but when a problem occurs, it needs to be fixed. Part of being a tax-paying adult.

  30. Ranting Guy August 17th, 2007 at 6:24 pm

ANSKY needs to keep making up ground on the beantown chowdah heads. But if Pettitte leaves after 7 or 8 in a tight game, does Joe call on Joba for a hold or save in bad weather? Seems like an injury risk to me.

  31. Enoch August 17th, 2007 at 6:24 pm

    This is a great lineup.

  32. Yankee Rich August 17th, 2007 at 6:25 pm

Time for John Sterling to coin a phrase for a Shelly Duncan home Run! How about “Duncan Dunks One”.

  33. ROY August 17th, 2007 at 6:25 pm

any word on us bringing someone up or finding someone for the pen?

  34. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Jon Sterling oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named harold) August 17th, 2007 at 6:28 pm

jennifer: was it another racist thing

  35. nate c. August 17th, 2007 at 6:28 pm

    registration sounds good to me.

rude and useless comments cheapen this forum – and I think it is clear that peter is running one of the better yankee blogs on the web. if people say something silly, they should be held accountable. I like to think of this as a place where we’re all sitting around drinking a beer talking about that yankees.

isn’t that what we’re all about?

  36. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Jon Sterling oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named harold) August 17th, 2007 at 6:30 pm

roy: they brought people up when the sent down karstens and bouer or however you spell it

  37. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Jon Sterling oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named harold) August 17th, 2007 at 6:31 pm

nate im underage but sounds good to me

  38. ROY August 17th, 2007 at 6:31 pm

“jennifer: was it another racist thing”

Must be someone from Boston. Shouldn’t they be washing their pointy white hoods for the second game?

  39. paramagnetic August 17th, 2007 at 6:32 pm

    >> giambi is 6-10 off robertson

    yeah. sure. whatever.
He’ll go 0-4 tonight. I’ve got money on it.

  40. Bob Michaels August 17th, 2007 at 6:32 pm

I`d like to see Shelley at first, although Joe has a gut feeling that Phillips will snap his slump tonite.

  41. Rebecca August 17th, 2007 at 6:32 pm

    Yankee Rich:

    Slam Duncan?

  42. mel August 17th, 2007 at 6:33 pm

Nothing beats a live report from the stadium (thanks jennifer & Lori), but here’s a radar map: http://www.wunderground.com/cg.....ronx%2C+ny

  43. ansky August 17th, 2007 at 6:34 pm

thank you ranting guy, no one ever pulls out the ansky anymore…

  44. mel August 17th, 2007 at 6:35 pm

I think that we’re pretty immune to the racist & homophobic comments, but when you start attacking Lester & the Jimmy V Fund it’s gone too far.

  45. PBL August 17th, 2007 at 6:36 pm

not another racist thing the guy was making sexual comments about kids with cancer

  46. nate c. August 17th, 2007 at 6:36 pm

Boston Yankee – haha, these are ‘virtual beers’ if you will

  47. Lori August 17th, 2007 at 6:37 pm

Can’t read the map on this thing, but yeah, it’s still raining. Funny, because I checked accuweather on line before I left the house and they had it as a nice evening. Oh well. If I were a betting woman, I’d say we’re going to be delayed.

  48. Bob Michaels August 17th, 2007 at 6:37 pm

Roberston was the only Tiger Pitcher that the Bombers bombed in the playoffs last year.May history repeat itself if the game is played tonight.

  49. Adam S August 17th, 2007 at 6:38 pm

Andy also has to play first tonight behind pettitte. You dont want Duncan at first in a big game with a grond ball pitcher on the mound.

  50. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Jon Sterling oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named harold) August 17th, 2007 at 6:38 pm

    pbl: that is absolutely disgusting

and roy im from boston believe it or not everyone isnt kkk or an idiot. i resent that

  51. Rebecca August 17th, 2007 at 6:38 pm

    Mel–Amen.
Dis the BoSux all you want, but some things are just off limits.

At least true Yankee fans have enough class to know that.

If you don’t, I don’t want you rooting for my team.

  52. Rebecca August 17th, 2007 at 6:40 pm

Lori–Radar shows it’s still raining, but it should clear up. Don’t expect more than a 30-45 minute delay, but I’m no meterologist, so it might be in your best interest just to ignore me :-P

  53. Ranting Guy August 17th, 2007 at 6:40 pm

    ANSKY’s a classic!

Oh, Mel … the Jimmy Fund doesn’t get its name from Jimmy V, but I think everyone’s pretty much in agreement on the principle.

  54. mel August 17th, 2007 at 6:41 pm

Lori, the radar shows rain over the Bronx with 2 other blobs in CT. Delays are o.k., as long as the game goes on and we win!

  55. Fear Factor August 17th, 2007 at 6:42 pm

Nate Robertson vs. The New York Yankees on August 17*:

    IP H R ER HR BB K
    8. 4 1. 1. 00 3. 5

    *Best Start of the Season.

  56. Ranting Guy August 17th, 2007 at 6:45 pm

Sorry I made it rain tonight, gang … I caused it by washing my car last night.

  57. mel August 17th, 2007 at 6:46 pm

That stat line is very good. I think the Yankees should just default the game and take the loss. They wouldn’t want to be embarrassed by Robertson again.

  58. paramagnetic August 17th, 2007 at 6:46 pm

Any rain delay will work in favor of the Tigers — just like last postseason’s rain postponement.

  59. Lori August 17th, 2007 at 6:50 pm

Looks like it is finally stopping! Yeah! I’m going to go dry off my seats and watch the Yanks win! GO YANKEES!

  60. Bob Michaels August 17th, 2007 at 6:55 pm

Adam S, your point is well taken, the glove over the bat.

  61. C GAR August 17th, 2007 at 6:58 pm

line ups for both teams should be posted

  62. Rebecca August 17th, 2007 at 7:01 pm

    Looks like a delay…

  63. ROY August 17th, 2007 at 7:01 pm

    someone open a window?

    some flies just come in…

  64. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Jon Sterling oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named harold) August 17th, 2007 at 7:02 pm

    lori: our own kim jones

  65. Lori August 17th, 2007 at 7:02 pm

And the tarp is coming off the field!

  66. mel August 17th, 2007 at 7:03 pm

Pete’s off today. If you want lineups try mlb.com or espn.com. Good luck.

  67. Rebecca August 17th, 2007 at 7:04 pm

    Whoo! Let’s play some ball!

  68. ROY August 17th, 2007 at 7:08 pm

    Let’s Go team!

  69. Yankeeesssss August 17th, 2007 at 7:08 pm

I can’t find the game anywhere!!

  70. Rebecca August 17th, 2007 at 7:10 pm

It’s on UPN/MY 9, but they’re showing King of Queens during the delay.

  71. jennifer August 17th, 2007 at 7:11 pm

Any word on when the game will be played?

  72. YankeeJosh August 17th, 2007 at 7:11 pm

I know registration is the first thought to get rid of trolls, but will it really work? Troll registers, posts his dumb comments, gets account deleted. Finds another IP address or mask and registers with a different name, continues to troll.

I’m all for deleted lunatic comments. Am I missing something? Perhaps a board moderator during the games other than Peter might work. Someone he trusts. I think that might be a better way.

  73. Gerry August 17th, 2007 at 7:11 pm

So since Giambi came back, the Yanks have cooled off. This guy is a cancer to the team as a whole. He plagued them in the beginning of the season then he goes on the DL for 3 months and the Yanks play .700 ball. He comes back and its back to shambles and April like baseball. Granted he got a few key hits, but this guy needs to ride the bench and come in for pinch hit or something. Giambi playing everyday kills this team. I think Damon in left, Melky in center and Matsui at DH is the best case scenario because the defense is upgraded with Melky’s arm and Damon’s speed and gives the yanks that Strawberry/Ruben Sierra bat off the bench.

Torre even said before Giambi came back that things wouldn’t change, why alter things if they’re going so well? Well look at how things are right now and tell me how things have changed.

I know Melky needs a day off but I’d rather see Duncan that Giambi. But then again, this is all my opinion and observation.

  74. Viper August 17th, 2007 at 7:14 pm

Um, Giambi helped the Yanks win two games in CLE last weekend.

    Giambi is a cancer? Puh-leez.

  75. ZacksMom August 17th, 2007 at 7:14 pm

    GO YANKEES!!!!!!!!!!!

  76. Rebecca August 17th, 2007 at 7:14 pm

Board moderators mean it takes that much longer to get our comments posted and approved, unless you just mean moderators to watch the board while the game is in progress and delete inappropriate comments.

In which case I’m for it.

  77. Yankeeesssss August 17th, 2007 at 7:14 pm

Normally when games are on MY9, its on FOx here. But the tvguide channel says that the simpsons are on and the game has not been shown for any channels.. does anyone have this same problem?

  78. ROY August 17th, 2007 at 7:14 pm

    delay?

  79. Josh August 17th, 2007 at 7:14 pm

I think a board moderator would be a good idea.

  80. Enoch August 17th, 2007 at 7:16 pm

    Gerry,

You’ve got to be kidding. The Yankees success is due to the Giambi injury?

+.400 OBP guys with power don’t generally hurt a team.

  81. jimwxyz August 17th, 2007 at 7:16 pm

Heading to the ballpark this weekend?

The Tigers / Yankees should be a great series…anyway,
I’m trying to see if I can get people from all over the country to send me camera phone (or digital camera) shots of every ballpark in MLB before the season ends. If you head out to see the Yanks/TIgers series and want to have a photo from the game posted on my blog, just email it on over. Photos including players, celebs, beer vendors, ushers get bonus points ;) Include details from the game as well.

I`m all for registration. Annoying but worth \it. A moderator who just watches the boards and deletes bad comments would be good

  83. Dr. Acula August 17th, 2007 at 7:18 pm

    jennifer-

watcha using for communications? Lori uses a blackberry.

  84. Rebecca August 17th, 2007 at 7:19 pm

Lori, any word on the delay/the game?

  85. Gerry August 17th, 2007 at 7:21 pm

    Enoch,

Its called “Team Chemistry”. Giambi is a liability in the field and clogs up the DH spot. He forces everyone to play the field and not rotate the DH hole. He may have a .400 OBP but a lot of the team has high numbers. Without Giambi, the Yankees had a 1.027 OPS in July. THE ENTIRE TEAM had that as an average, not one guy. Completely unheard of.

I like this team 50 times more without Giambi and Im sure if you ask 10 people, 8 will say the same thing. He’s a great clubhouse guy, but he needs to go.

  86. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Jon Sterling oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named harold) August 17th, 2007 at 7:21 pm

    what rebecca said

  87. Ava August 17th, 2007 at 7:21 pm

Hey, can anybody think of a good sports bar somewhere on the Upper West Side that’ll be airing the game? My boyfriend’s little sister is at my apartment tonight and she wants to watch High School Musical 2… or maybe we’ll just be delayed until 10:00!

  88. Wolf In Pinstripes August 17th, 2007 at 7:21 pm

Ahhhh…. nice big pizza, a chance to finally hit the blog during game time in what seems like ages, and a cold mojito in hand. Hello, people. :D

  89. Lori August 17th, 2007 at 7:21 pm

Looked bad when they ended up not taking off the tarp. Raining again here in the Bronx.

  90. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Jon Sterling oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named harold) August 17th, 2007 at 7:23 pm

k thanks lori keep up with the updates i appreciate it

  91. Rebecca August 17th, 2007 at 7:23 pm

Radar looks worse than it did a minute ago. If they start the game by 9 I’ll be impressed.

  92. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Jon Sterling oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named harold) August 17th, 2007 at 7:23 pm

wolf in pinstripes i havent seen you for awhile. what gives?

  93. YankeeJosh August 17th, 2007 at 7:24 pm

Rebecca, I’m talking about a moderator who reads the comments and deletes anything inappropriate. At least during the game threads. Pete shouldn’t have to worry about the blog during the game when he should be focussed on covering the game and writing his articles.

  94. Celebrating Small Victories August 17th, 2007 at 7:24 pm

Although Beckett did not give up a run in the top of the 1st, it took the @$$ 24 ptiches to get through it….

  95. jennifer August 17th, 2007 at 7:25 pm

I’m not at the stadium :( I saw video from ys.

  96. jennifer August 17th, 2007 at 7:26 pm

I agree yankeejosh. ALthough I don’t think his paper would want to pay someone to do it. but maybe he could choose 2-3 regular blogers, to keep an eye out and delete inappropitate postings.

  97. Rebecca August 17th, 2007 at 7:27 pm

YankeeJosh: Yep, in that instance I’m for it.

Didn’t know if you meant each post had to go through a submission process or not. Different boards moderate in different ways ;)

  98. Kj August 17th, 2007 at 7:27 pm

This game is not going to get played its going to be on and off for awhile. Looks like we’ll play 2 tomorrow.

  99. Wolf In Pinstripes August 17th, 2007 at 7:28 pm

“wolf in pinstripes i havent seen you for awhile. what gives?”

Busy working my tail off at my job and putting a ton of time into setting up two websites in my free time. Matter of fact, a lot of my time lately has gone into setting things up to prevent spam and trolls at them. LOL

Thanks for the shout-out, though – good to be back in action! :D

  100. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Jon Sterling oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named harold) August 17th, 2007 at 7:29 pm

another small victory: ortiz strikes out and continues to suck

  101. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Jon Sterling oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named harold) August 17th, 2007 at 7:30 pm

good to have you back and another sense of reason-non panicking-non joe torre bashing poster

  102. Rebecca August 17th, 2007 at 7:30 pm

KJ: Do you know for sure?

It’d make more sense to play two on Sunday, because you can do a 1.00 start and a 7.00 start; tomorrow’s game is a 3.55 start, thus they’d have to play two games in a row immediatley following one another.

  103. Viper August 17th, 2007 at 7:30 pm

_I like this team 50 times more without Giambi and Im sure if you ask 10 people, 8 will say the same thing. He’s a great clubhouse guy, but he needs to go._

Your hatred for Giambi isn’t going to change anything because he is going nowhere because of his contract.

Secondly, perhaps you should consider that the Yanks have also faced the best pitching in the last few games than they have seen in a month with Guthrie, Bedard, and Verlander.

    Winning = Chemistry

  104. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Jon Sterling oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named harold) August 17th, 2007 at 7:31 pm

i agree with viper there is no way it isnt good that giambi is back

  105. jennifer August 17th, 2007 at 7:32 pm

Why do they have to show the Bernie Mac show? I can’t stand it. I guess is a good time to pack for tomorrow.

    Be back in a bit.

  106. Jonathon August 17th, 2007 at 7:34 pm

I think you can take Guthrie off that list…his last few starts have been awful, including the one against the Yankees.

They’ve had Bedard sure and Verlander too but those loses were on the Yankees pitching, the offense has been fine (excluding the 12-0 aberration on Tuesday).

  107. Eric August 17th, 2007 at 7:35 pm

they can’t play a doubleheader on Sunday because ESPN has a monopoly on the 7PM time slot

  108. Rebecca August 17th, 2007 at 7:35 pm

I’m going to watch an episode of Dr. Who. Once it finishes downloading.

Does this mean we will lose a starter next week against the LAA?

Its going to be time for the Jeff Karstens show again, and I didnt like the episode last week.

  110. mel August 17th, 2007 at 7:36 pm

What happened to Mirabelly? He played only 1 inning in the first game. I thought they realized all of sudden that it wasn’t Wakefield on the mound, but they said it was an injured leg.

  111. Rebecca August 17th, 2007 at 7:37 pm

    Eric: Ah, didn’t realize that!

  112. YankeeJosh August 17th, 2007 at 7:37 pm

    Rebecca

I know, and agree that delaying comments would make the blog less fun.

The Yanks have to go out west to L.A. Sunday night so playing two Sunday would not be ideal. Of course, playing two tomorrow with a 3:55 start also isn’t ideal either

  113. LI Temps August 17th, 2007 at 7:39 pm

Looks like tonight’s game is off? Then it’s Pettitte and Clemens and pray for the bullpen on Sat. When would game time be?

  114. Dr. Acula August 17th, 2007 at 7:39 pm

    Lori-

did they take the tarp off and put it back on?

And here’s a picture of our Peter working hard at Wednesday’s game.

  115. Rebecca August 17th, 2007 at 7:39 pm

Guess that means they’ll try to get the game in tonight any way they can…

  116. Michael T August 17th, 2007 at 7:40 pm

    Ava-

NYC is not a sports bar town, but Blondies at 212 W 79th is a good one. And of course, Mickey Mantle’s near Central Park South is good but might not be in the right ‘hood for you.

  119. Rebecca August 17th, 2007 at 7:42 pm

What channel is the Jets on? I can’t find it.

  120. Lori August 17th, 2007 at 7:43 pm

They pulled it off to dump the water, folded it as if to roll it up, and then pulled it back on. They spent some time fixing up the dirt around the edges and then the rain started.

    May be stopping. We’ll see.

  121. Jonathon August 17th, 2007 at 7:44 pm

Looks like the tarp is coming off

  122. Josh August 17th, 2007 at 7:44 pm

    Tarp is coming off…

  124. Gerry August 17th, 2007 at 7:44 pm

    Viper,

I agree with you. They have faced some tough pitching lately and I know my banter isn’t going to get him off the team. I just wish Torre would accept his role as a bench player and leave it at that. I’d love if Giambi came off the bench in the 6th and played a few innings.

Moose had a bad game and Karstens isn’t 100%, two key losses. I hope Edwar and Joba da Hut play tonight. The kids will add the flare the team lacked last season. Shelley, C+C, Hughes and Joba will inject this team of overpaid superstars with some life and the fire most lack.

Don’t bite my head off, i love Jete, Arod, HipHip, etc. But i LOVE the fire they bring.

  125. YankeeJosh August 17th, 2007 at 7:44 pm

    Rebecca,

Jets will be on Fox tonight, Channel 5 in NY.

  126. Viper August 17th, 2007 at 7:45 pm

_I think you can take Guthrie off that list…his last few starts have been awful, including the one against the Yankees._

Not scratching Guthrie off any list. He came into Monday’s action with a 3.22 ERA this season – which placed him #6 in the AL in ERA.

  127. Lori August 17th, 2007 at 7:48 pm

    Tarp back on.

Wait, wait – are they getting ready to roll it up? YES! Folding it up!

  128. Rebecca August 17th, 2007 at 7:48 pm

    Thanks lori and YankeeJosh!

  129. jennifer August 17th, 2007 at 7:48 pm

  130. Rebecca August 17th, 2007 at 7:49 pm

Lori: GREAT news! (Let’s hope, anyway. If they play awful again it might then be construed as really bad news…)

  131. jennifer August 17th, 2007 at 7:49 pm

Lori are you at the stadium?

  132. Viper August 17th, 2007 at 7:50 pm

    Gerry,

I don’t think letting the kids play and leaving vets on the bench indefinitely is the right thing to do either.

These guys are all vying to play more often and it’s good to have a competition.

Besides, you don’t want Damon or Giambi to sit on the bench for a long time and expect them to produce late in the game when they are stone cold.

Torre is trying to mix and match and give everyone ABs. I think he’s doing the right thing.

  135. jennifer August 17th, 2007 at 7:51 pm

Just thought i’d let everyone know Beckket is throwing a no hitter.

I have one question I wonder if anyone knows it.

Why would Socia (sp) move Lackey his ace from a game against the soxs ace, to a game against a rookie? ANd have a pitcher who just came back up from the minors to face the soxs ace?

  136. jennifer August 17th, 2007 at 7:52 pm

Just as I say it no hitter is gone :D

  142. Viper August 17th, 2007 at 7:56 pm

A pitcher who is struggling doesn’t mean he’s no longer a good pitcher.

Wang has struggled for awhile too, but that doesn’t diminish his status as the ace of the Yanks.

Not saying that Guthrie is an ace or comparable to the top pitchers in the league, but he’s still having a great season and you seem to be downplaying his accomplishments.

  143. migames August 17th, 2007 at 7:57 pm

  145. Enoch August 17th, 2007 at 7:57 pm

“Its called “Team Chemistryâ€?. Giambi is a liability in the field and clogs up the DH spot.”

Chemistry happens when teams win. Team win because they score runs which are caused by men getting on base. Giambi does this almost as good as any player in baseball. The notion that he clogs up the basepaths is McCarver-esque.

Yes, he presence makes it less possible to rotate regulars to the DH spot, but the notion that they are winning BECAUSE he was out is ridiculous. Hot players cool off. Good teams lose games. It had nothingn to do with Giambi’s return.

  146. Rebecca August 17th, 2007 at 7:57 pm

  155. Jonathon August 17th, 2007 at 8:04 pm

Dude…Viper…track record. Guthrie hasn’t pitched a good season until the 1st half of 2007. Wang has been nearly a 20 game winner for two seasons and has had 2 rough games.

I mean you are entitled to your opinion but I don’t know before I call him one of the best pitchers in baseball I need more that a good 1st half of one season.

  156. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Jon Sterling oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named harold) August 17th, 2007 at 8:04 pm

    Strange how that works, huh?

  160. jennifer August 17th, 2007 at 8:05 pm

I’ve heard the parking situation is an absoulte mess at Giants Stadium. I usually go to 2-3 games sometimes 4 a year. But if I have to park 2 miles away and pay $25 to boot, I think I might watch it from the comfort of my living room.

  161. jennifer August 17th, 2007 at 8:06 pm

I’ve always been a Jet fan. Espically a Wayne Chrebet (LOVE HIM) and Curtis Martin fan.

  162. Pepper Brooks August 17th, 2007 at 8:06 pm

Not sure how many of you watched the 1st game in Boston today but they had some great stories. If you can afford to give, call the telethon number. Was great to see a kid who wrote Lester a letter telling him “if I can do it, you can do it” – took off his braces and ran the bases before the start of the second game. Just AWESOME!!!!!

  163. Rebecca August 17th, 2007 at 8:06 pm

jennifer: It is usually a mess, yes. However, this year my friend and I are going to the Jets/Buffalo game in Buffalo (I live very close to East Rutherford, but I go to school in Syracuse, and we can get to and from Buffalo in a day)

  173. Rebecca August 17th, 2007 at 8:11 pm

    Yankees/Devils/Jets/Nets, in that order.

I can easily explain the Devils and Nets because I’m a Jersey girl, but the Jets defies explanation–everyone else in my immediate family likes the Giants (though my grandma’s a Jets fan). Basically, one year they both made the playoffs, and I liked the atmosphere of the Jets game better than the Giants game. And they won and the Giants didn’t. That helped as well.

  174. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Jon Sterling oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named harold) August 17th, 2007 at 8:12 pm

Ok…we will see where Guthrie ends up at the end of the season…like I said you are totally entitled to your opinion but I’m not going to put Guthrie up there with Bedard and Verlander as tough pitchers the Yankees have faced lately.

Like I said, he’s going to have to do it for more than 1/2 of one season to be a top pitcher.

  228. kasey August 17th, 2007 at 8:30 pm

i know this is blaspheme, but i’m so sick of seeing somebody work a long count and a walk and then seeing jeter swing at the first pitch and ground into a DP.

When I see GIDP pop up on Gameday a little piece of me dies

  230. YankeeJosh August 17th, 2007 at 8:31 pm

    Stolen bases:

    Jeter: 12
    Melky: 10
    Cano: 3
    A-Rod: 15

Certainly respectable numbers except for Cano.

  231. Aye Aye Cap'n August 17th, 2007 at 8:32 pm

How many times does Jeter get to hit into a double play this year on the FIRST FREAKIN’ PITCH after the guy before him works a walk before Torre punches him SQUARE IN THE FACE and tells him to F*CKIN’ STOP IT !!!???

    You’re right, Ron.

That might’ve been the dumbest point I’ve seen on this blog lately.

  318. Chicago Dave August 17th, 2007 at 9:00 pm

Our offense is going to break out again this weekend. I just feel it.

  321. Ron August 17th, 2007 at 9:02 pm

Viper, they keep far more important statistics too. One that weren’t first kept before the invention of the ENIAC.

  322. CB August 17th, 2007 at 9:02 pm

Surprised to see Cam Maybin called up so soon.

Detroit is very aggressive in the draft and then very aggressive with getting prospects to the majors.

It’s worked with their pitchers we’ll see with Maybin. He was hurt this year and missed some time. Came back, got promoted to AA and tore it up the last two weeks or so.

    A world of talent.

Look forward to the yankees getting high ceiling position players into the system. To get anyone close to the Maybin level it may have to come from an international signing. The Maybin level talents don’t fall far even due to signability.

  323. migames (fire everyone each time the yankees dont win) August 17th, 2007 at 9:02 pm

  325. Chicago Dave August 17th, 2007 at 9:03 pm

P.S. – What happened to the Yanks that won all those games right after the All Star break? In the last few they’re showing disturbing signs of reverting back to the hapless Yankees of earlier this year.

Regardless, if they want to stay in this thing they really need to wake up tonight and pull one out. For that matter, I think they need to win the next two as well. Dropping 3 of 4 or getting completely swept by Detroit in this series would sink them.

  326. JJ August 17th, 2007 at 9:03 pm

top of the seventh in boston still 2-0

  336. Vinny 5743 August 17th, 2007 at 9:05 pm

Pudge has been one of the top catchers in the game in the last 10 years all around. You can nit pick different stats all you want but he is a HOF catcher in waiting. A 10 time all star, WS winner, etc. He is a high caliber player who’s having a rough year. You don’t discard a guy like that as if he’s an old shoe.

  348. Pepper Brooks August 17th, 2007 at 9:08 pm

Just saw the replay of the run the Tigers scored. Is it me or was Cano and Phillips completely out of the rotation? Why was Cano on third?

  349. Chicago Dave August 17th, 2007 at 9:08 pm

Robertson is certainly a crap pitcher. The Yankee offense that was crankin’ through the Cleveland series would have had him on the ropes by now. However, it seems the offense has gone distinctly cold as of late…

Well Andy got a hit, so everyone can get off of him now.

  356. helno51 August 17th, 2007 at 9:09 pm

    phillips trying to redeem himself

  357. YankeeJosh August 17th, 2007 at 9:09 pm

Batting average has its flaws but it’s not a meaningless stat. The fact is a walk isn’t as good as a hit. Singles drive in runs more often than walks. Extra base hits drive in more runs and put pressure on pitchers. Yes, I know slugging percentage factors that in. Batting average is a tool to measuere players by. Taken with OBP, it has it’s merits.

  358. Chicago Dave August 17th, 2007 at 9:10 pm

Alright, guys, let’s keep the momentum going now… Don’t screw this up, Damon!

  359. jennifer August 17th, 2007 at 9:10 pm

Well looks like Santana is collapsing. 2nd 3rd no out.

  360. hh August 17th, 2007 at 9:10 pm

I swear to god if the Angels dont put in Shields right now I’m going to be so angry

  361. JJ August 17th, 2007 at 9:10 pm

Mabye Its me but I’d rather have melky up here

  362. Ron August 17th, 2007 at 9:11 pm

Fine, but a sub .290 OBP means that you are a very bad baseball player.

  363. helno51 August 17th, 2007 at 9:11 pm

batting average does have some merits but not when judging too fairly close players. if one guy is at 300 and another guy at 270 the 270 hitter could clearly be the better player if you look at other more meaningful stats.

  364. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named harold) August 17th, 2007 at 9:11 pm

yea chicago dave remember those days? the yanks would have 10 by now. if someone could invent something to eat that gets you out of offenseive slumps like rogers eggs in 61* theyd be a billionaire

  365. hh August 17th, 2007 at 9:12 pm

  372. jennifer August 17th, 2007 at 9:14 pm

    Gosh darnit!! Scored a run!

  373. Vinny 5743 August 17th, 2007 at 9:14 pm

No migames and you don’t disregard him for the one bad year he’s had either. This is not fantasy baseball. These are players lives and livings your dealing with. If a player has given you his best all those years he deserves a little more consideration than to be put out to pasture after a bad half of a season. If the teams did that with every player they had cotracts would be quadruple of what there are right now and the players union would be up in arms as well as the players themselves. ALL Players slump at times in their careers. It is not abnormal.

  374. Jonathon August 17th, 2007 at 9:14 pm

Cano is slow and he’s in scoring position already…why risk it…didn’t need to tag.

  375. hh August 17th, 2007 at 9:14 pm

  379. jennifer August 17th, 2007 at 9:15 pm

  416. kasey August 17th, 2007 at 9:24 pm

as much as i love seeing matsui flail at ball four like an idiot, wouldn’t it be a little more productive to act like the “professional hitter” he’s billed as and take the walk?

lotta mental mistakes at the plate lately from this veteran offense.

  417. JJ August 17th, 2007 at 9:24 pm

    was that ball 4?

  418. helno51 August 17th, 2007 at 9:24 pm

  440. Wolf In Pinstripes August 17th, 2007 at 9:33 pm

Yeah, Matsui should have taken that 3-1 pitch instead of swinging. That was a freebie.

  460. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named harold) August 17th, 2007 at 9:38 pm

  469. nate c. August 17th, 2007 at 9:41 pm

“It’s definitely something that I’ll be thinking about,” Damon said. “They have a number of things to address during the offseason. We’ll just have to wait and see. I think they can pretty much pencil Melky in as the everyday center fielder for a number of years.”

Yup. I agree, thanks for the SO

  470. Stef August 17th, 2007 at 9:42 pm

It’s kind of ironic that Yankee fans are actually rooting for the Angels…it’s all relative, isn’t it?

  471. Viper August 17th, 2007 at 9:42 pm

IMO, the best booth is Singleton, Leiter, and O’Neill.

Really, any booth without Kay or Justice is a good thing.

  472. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named harold) August 17th, 2007 at 9:42 pm

  473. YankeeJosh August 17th, 2007 at 9:42 pm

To me, O’Neill is pure entertainment. I love when he calls out Kay for his crappy calls. Girardi and Flaherty add the technical part of the analysis. Leiter imo adds very little.

    Wildcard is ours.

  485. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named harold) August 17th, 2007 at 9:46 pm

has andy given up a single? he just gives up doubles

  486. CB August 17th, 2007 at 9:47 pm

The Yankees have tremendous depth in young pitching in the minors.

That said Dan McCutchen has really making a statement this year and its getting hard to look past him, though he is older (25 – was drafted as a 5th yr senior last year).

He spent most of the year in A ball and put up outstanding numbers but because he was so much older than most players there you had to take his numbers with a grain of salt.

But since being promoted to AA, he’s thrown 4 of the best games any starter at Trenton has thrown the entire year. Given that the Trenton staff was one of the best in recent minor league history, that is saying something.

    McCutchen’s line tonight:

    7 IP 5H 0R 0BB 7K

In 4 games his combined line is:

    23IP 16H 2 ER 5BB 23 K – ERA 0.78

A K:BB ratio of 23:5 isn’t bad. He has strong stuff – nice low to 90′s fastball and a great change. He’s not just a guy like a Clippard or Wright who may have marginal stuff.

He should be in the mix for a spot in the Scranton AAA staff next year. He knows how to pitch. I wonder if he could help them in the pen in the not so distant future.

  487. jennifer August 17th, 2007 at 9:47 pm

Pete can’t stay away! He loves us too much! I guess he has a blackberry!

  488. JJ August 17th, 2007 at 9:48 pm

    I hate KROD

  489. jennifer August 17th, 2007 at 9:49 pm

Wow very strange, kept telling Jorge it was him who called time.

  490. Chicago Dave August 17th, 2007 at 9:49 pm

Well, I think a good call is a good call, period. So, I’m not apologizing for calling Big Papi’s hit before it happened… So there! ;)

  491. jennifer August 17th, 2007 at 9:50 pm

Bug flew in Jorge’s eye, thats why he called time.

  492. Vinny 5743 August 17th, 2007 at 9:51 pm

    Boston Yankee,
I wouldn’t be too surprised if Torre uses Giambi at first more if Phillips doesn’t hit well. Maybe once or twice a week as long as he’s healthy. He will need Giambi to be healthy if they get into the world series to play 1st. Just my opinion.

He will use Duncan and Betemit to spell the others and with certain alignments but Torre will bank on his proven players and use Phillips as a replacement late until Minky comes back in September, if he does. Torre will go with as much offense as he can once he gets into the playoffs and sacrifice some defense, especially at 1st. Damon is faster than Matsui in left and is about the same as a fielder. He still gets on base at a much better rate than Phillips does. So does Giambi. Torre needs as many on base as possible as often as possible.

  493. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named harold) August 17th, 2007 at 9:51 pm

how do you know jenny from the block?

  494. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named harold) August 17th, 2007 at 9:52 pm

no vinny that wasnt what i wrote i was quoting a clown who said that earlier. i go with the assurance that torre knows what hes doing and thats why he has the job. so i dont question his lineup choices

  495. Aye Aye Cap'n August 17th, 2007 at 9:52 pm

    F-Rod is a nimrod…thanks for nuttin’, jerk !

  496. Dr. Acula August 17th, 2007 at 9:52 pm

    what’s wrong with the Halos?

First, lackey, then shields, not krod. Ugh

  497. Chicago Dave August 17th, 2007 at 9:53 pm

If Andy can get through a couple more innings unscathed, we’ll definitely see Joba, don’t you think?

  498. Dr. Acula August 17th, 2007 at 9:53 pm

We love you Andy.., oh, yes we do..

  499. kasey August 17th, 2007 at 9:53 pm

refreshing to see pettitte step up and throw well when they really need to get a win. barring a complete meltdown, he’s given them all they can ask for tonight. mussina might want to take note.

  500. JJ August 17th, 2007 at 9:53 pm

whoah. looks like jj and i had similar thoughts.

  503. Chicago Dave August 17th, 2007 at 9:55 pm

Why can’t the Angels fold like this when we play us? You know, remain Clark Kent instead of turning into Superman (which they always freakin’ do when the see Yankee uniforms!).

  504. Chicago Dave August 17th, 2007 at 9:56 pm

OK, bad spelling in that last post. I meant “they”, of course!

  509. JJ August 17th, 2007 at 9:57 pm

    Mo available tonight?

  510. Chicago Dave August 17th, 2007 at 9:57 pm

Mussina is great for throwing against teams in a slump or teams with impatient hitters. Other than that, he’s just kindling for the fire.

  511. jennifer August 17th, 2007 at 9:58 pm

My guess is they’d want to get him another night off.

  512. Dr. Acula August 17th, 2007 at 9:58 pm

that advertisment they just ran: “HUMMER: like nothing else” – they may wanna rethink that wording. ;)

    even though, it’s true!

    Boston Yankee-

let us know how hard Gagne gets booed when he heads to the dugout

  572. Ron August 17th, 2007 at 10:12 pm

Buster Olney was right. Gagne has been a tremendous asset to the Yankees since he was traded.

  573. JJ August 17th, 2007 at 10:12 pm

  584. Go NYR August 17th, 2007 at 10:14 pm

You win some, ya lose some. I think Andy Ks that guy anyways.

  585. Rebecca August 17th, 2007 at 10:14 pm

  589. BX 12 Fordham Road August 17th, 2007 at 10:15 pm

did Francona call Torre on BP management ? He used Pap Smear in Game 1 with a 4 run lead in the 9th ? He is getting what he deserves with the arsonist Gagne

  590. Dr. Acula August 17th, 2007 at 10:16 pm

    Wow!

Andy is only at 79 pitches.

  591. Chicago Dave August 17th, 2007 at 10:16 pm

  593. Rebecca August 17th, 2007 at 10:17 pm

  594. Kat August 17th, 2007 at 10:17 pm

Wow! I love Gagne! He is my favorite Yankee!

  595. Tom August 17th, 2007 at 10:17 pm

Francona used Papelbon with the tying run at the plate in the 8th. If he had taken him out in the ninth with the 4 run lead for Gagne, they have lost that one

  596. Vinny 5743 August 17th, 2007 at 10:17 pm

A naice hit after a nice catch Matsui !!!

  599. jennifer August 17th, 2007 at 10:18 pm

Did anyone else notice on the light shot there was a person standing above the lights?

That reminds me of one of the games I went to in the begining of 2002, the top of the stadium was lined with cops with guns. Scared the living you know what out of me.

  600. Chicago Dave August 17th, 2007 at 10:18 pm

Ahh, Hideki…Why couldn’t you have done that when the bases were loaded earlier?!

  601. Dr. Acula August 17th, 2007 at 10:18 pm

    jennifer -

it was steve phillips. and he was emphatic about it.

  602. jennifer August 17th, 2007 at 10:18 pm

Whats going on in Boston, it says on field delay.

  603. Kat August 17th, 2007 at 10:19 pm

    whoa.. why was francona ejected?

  606. jennifer August 17th, 2007 at 10:19 pm

It wasn’t Steve that I heard saying it. Maybe John Heyman?

  607. Dr. Acula August 17th, 2007 at 10:20 pm

    Rebecca-

thanks for the idea. i’m gonna make one up. yankee blue jersey, with the logo on front and GANGE on the back !

  608. Chicago Dave August 17th, 2007 at 10:20 pm

  610. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named harold) August 17th, 2007 at 10:21 pm

    okay what happened in boston:

0-2 Youk swings fouls the ball. ump called it a swing. Youk argues terry argues with the firstbase ump firstbase upholds the call. terry keeps arguing gets thrown out. youk turns red and says the f word maybe 5 times gets thrown out. IT WAS BRILLIANT!

  611. kasey August 17th, 2007 at 10:21 pm

  616. kasey August 17th, 2007 at 10:22 pm

why is leyland playing the kid in left tonight?
actually whatever who cares about his crappy team

  626. jennifer August 17th, 2007 at 10:23 pm

The best trade the Yankees never made was for Gagme.

  627. AL August 17th, 2007 at 10:24 pm

I guess in a way we did trade for Gagne

  628. helno51 August 17th, 2007 at 10:24 pm

lets remember that ian o’connor (from the bergen record i think) said that the yanks not getting gagne was not only wrong but that it signaled we were surrendering the season. even though it meant giving up melky or kennedy. will he write an article admitting how foolish he was? and for pete, why do some writers feel the need to write insanely strong opinions that they have no idea will be correct and make fools of themselves?

  629. Ron August 17th, 2007 at 10:24 pm

Damon still has no business starting for this baseball team. He has Tony Womack pop.

  630. JJ August 17th, 2007 at 10:24 pm

  634. Quan August 17th, 2007 at 10:25 pm

Cameron Maybin his debut has been so wack
So bad they be wantin’ Craig Monroe back

  635. Chicago Dave August 17th, 2007 at 10:25 pm

Can’t wait to see Melky back out there instead of Damon.

  636. AL August 17th, 2007 at 10:25 pm

Ian O’Connor was wrong there – but he’s a pretty good columnist. If you get a chance check out his book “The Jump” – it chronicles Telfair’s last season in HS when he made the leap. ESPN ripped right off him with their special on Bassy.

  637. JJ August 17th, 2007 at 10:25 pm

    so sue me

  638. Kat August 17th, 2007 at 10:26 pm

Nice inning all around – yanks score two runs, gagne blows the save, youk and francona get ejected – life is good.

dr. acula, if you get that shirt made, you have to take pictures and send them to us!

  639. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named harold) August 17th, 2007 at 10:26 pm

  640. Go NYR August 17th, 2007 at 10:26 pm

  641. jennifer August 17th, 2007 at 10:26 pm

I think both writers did to be emailed to ask them if they stand behind their statements.

  642. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named harold) August 17th, 2007 at 10:28 pm

so all in all we make up no ground on the sox. we lost yesterday they lost today we win today they won today. if we do win knock on wood

  643. helno51 August 17th, 2007 at 10:30 pm

al – i agree he is mostly a pretty good columnist. i am more bothered in general by the fact that writers and talk hosts feel the need to make these radical snap judgements. if he just said we made the wrong move by not getting gagne, fine. but to say we surrendered is stupid. and who the hell would play center if we dealt melky? im just bothered in general

  644. Go NYR August 17th, 2007 at 10:31 pm

Jose Reyes is gonna steal 80 bases this year. I think it would be cool to have a guy like that

  645. Vinny 5743 August 17th, 2007 at 10:31 pm

    Ron,
Damon, with sporatic playing time is batting .333 with a .372 OBP and a .410 SLG for August. Not too shabby for someone who shouldn’t be playing. He takes a lot of pitches, walks a lot and does what he has to.

  646. Chicago Dave August 17th, 2007 at 10:31 pm

Is anyone warming up in the bullpen right now?

  647. jennifer August 17th, 2007 at 10:31 pm

Agreed helno, To say we gave up and the soxs locked up the division is ridiculous.

  650. helno51 August 17th, 2007 at 10:32 pm

damon has been playing better but overall melky is still much better. offensively he is at least as good if not better and defensively its not even close

  651. jennifer August 17th, 2007 at 10:32 pm

No, no need to. Still has low pitch count, and isn’t in trouble. Let me finsh at least the 7th.

  662. Stef August 17th, 2007 at 10:35 pm

Andy’s at about 91. Not bad after 7.

  663. jennifer August 17th, 2007 at 10:35 pm

    91. Now do you just go to the pen? Or let Joba finish the last 2 innings? or let Andy try to get thru another?

  664. helno51 August 17th, 2007 at 10:36 pm

if andy can go 8 and we are up 4 i try to use someone else to close it out. save joba for tomorrow and that hopefully gives mo another day off

  665. nate c. August 17th, 2007 at 10:37 pm

you put andy out there for 8 – no question

  666. ace August 17th, 2007 at 10:37 pm

  667. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named harold) August 17th, 2007 at 10:37 pm

guys did you know only the bottom of the order has actually scored? thats comforting. shes a deep team i like that

  668. AL August 17th, 2007 at 10:37 pm

Agreed Helno – unfortuately ESPN has turned the sports world into an “Analyze Now” society. Nobody waits or has patients. You need to make a blunt statement now or you have no credibility – that’s what they’ve turned columnists into – pretty much scribes that are in talk radio.

I always like the columnists and talk show hosts (Dan Patrick) that try to show perspective and stay away from the prevailing zeitgeist of making “i’m right you’re wrong” statements.

On another thought – Damon needs to be moved down in the order… a potent lineup with a .255 hitter leading off… I’d rather see Abreu hit 1st, and Cano 3rd.

Abreu has Damon’s speed, more pop, and walks more. His power isnt’ what it used to be – he actually would be a terrific leadoff hitter for this lineup

  669. Stef August 17th, 2007 at 10:37 pm

Andy in the 8th, Viz in the 9th. I’d save Joba for when we really need some firepower and immediate stoppage.

  670. YankeeJosh August 17th, 2007 at 10:38 pm

I say let Andy try and get 8, then bring Joba in for the 9th. He needs the work, and it’d be nice to give Viz a night off.

  671. Go NYR August 17th, 2007 at 10:38 pm

jennifer- That may be true, but Joba comes wit ha strict set of rules. Using him tonight when it is not necessary eliminates him for tomorrow, when he could be vital to a win. But, you dont want him to get too rusty. Its pretty much a lose-lose situation. This is why they have me wondering about how long these “Joba rules” will be so strict for. He is a starter and throws 100 pitches per start. Im not thinking throwing him on back to back days is gonna absolutely blast his arm. I guess it is best to be cautious, though

  672. Chicago Dave August 17th, 2007 at 10:38 pm

Well, the Tigers left Robertson out there for 109 pitches. I think Andy could go that far as well…

  673. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named harold) August 17th, 2007 at 10:38 pm

  678. AL August 17th, 2007 at 10:41 pm

For the record – the Twins and Yankees will dominate the AL for the next 5 years… Hughes, Joba, Wang v. Santana, Liriano, Garza

  679. migames (fire everyone each time the yankees dont win) August 17th, 2007 at 10:41 pm

gerry, thats a non inteligent argument

  680. jennifer August 17th, 2007 at 10:42 pm

They are looking to limit is innings as well. they only want him to pitch something like 25 innings. So by them saying if he pitches two innings he needs two days off, that is a way to keep down the innings. I don’t know how many inning he pitched last year, but it wasn’t many. they don’t want a big jump. Plus they really think this kid is a diamond. they don’t want to damage him.

Btw there was a great article on Joba in newsday. My uncle a mets fan called me at work and told me to read it. brought tears to my eyes.

  693. Stef August 17th, 2007 at 10:45 pm

    Nate,

I must admit, I get a real thrill out of watching Joba pitch. I’ve replayed his innings several times on MLB.com. There’s just something about him that draws you in — and it’s not just his speedy fastball or nasty slider. He’s a keeper.

  694. jennifer August 17th, 2007 at 10:45 pm

Pitch count too high to go for cg. I’d let him go to 115. Than bring a reliever in. He’s done his job already.

  695. Rebecca August 17th, 2007 at 10:45 pm

I don’t mind seeing a CG, I’ve just been Joba less for so long, y’know?

  696. ace August 17th, 2007 at 10:46 pm

im just glad they got Andy some runs……hes over earned and lost too many games on support alone

  697. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named harold) August 17th, 2007 at 10:46 pm

  698. jennifer August 17th, 2007 at 10:47 pm

Whenever I go to the stadium next I have to get a Joba the Hut t-shirt!!

  699. Rebecca August 17th, 2007 at 10:47 pm

He keeps pitching like this, he can.

  700. jennifer August 17th, 2007 at 10:48 pm

Hmm Viz is standing but not throwing. Andy just at 101. If he gets him out early. Maybe they will let him start the 9th.

  701. Go NYR August 17th, 2007 at 10:48 pm

Andy Pettitte is one guy that is not in need of being coddled. I went to the game against Toronto where they tied it on the balk. I think he was clsoe to 120 pitches through 7 innings. He labored like crazy. It was a very tough game. I think this has been a relatively easy 100+ pitches. He can easily finish this one off and our pen could use a day off

  702. Stef August 17th, 2007 at 10:48 pm

Ah, Rebecca, I relate to your Joba-longing. :) I’m trying to sacrifice, though, for the sake of the team’s success in the long run.

  703. Chicago Dave August 17th, 2007 at 10:49 pm

Well, Fernando Vina just pronounced on “Baseball Tonight” that Gag-Me will “get it together and be fine,” so I guess Sox fans now have nothing to worry about. Man, I can’t believe the chumps they get to work on ESPN!!!

  704. Go NYR August 17th, 2007 at 10:49 pm

Potential top 9 matchup Joba v Sheffield

  705. YankeeJosh August 17th, 2007 at 10:49 pm

Vizcaino has worked a lot lately and pitched last night. I’d hope Torre avoids him. Use Joba or Edwar in the 9th if you need a reliever.

  706. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named harold) August 17th, 2007 at 10:50 pm

104 hes done. thanks andy that was just what we needed. you rock

  707. Vinny 5743 August 17th, 2007 at 10:50 pm

How many pitches for Andy ? Not more than 100.
He could finish the game out if Torre would let him.

  708. Chicago Dave August 17th, 2007 at 10:50 pm

Andy can definitely go CG tonight…I believe in him 100%!!!

  709. jennifer August 17th, 2007 at 10:50 pm

So Gagme will get it together and be fine. but Mo has a rough week and he’s done?

I heard on the radio that Gagme wasn’t doing so well before he was traded.

  712. corsari August 17th, 2007 at 10:51 pm

Andy proved once again he´s a big game pitcher. We really needed a good start and win tonight and Pettitte´s just been outstanding. It´s great to have him back where he belongs.

  713. Rebecca August 17th, 2007 at 10:51 pm

Stef: I know, it’s just, it’s soooo hard!

  714. Go NYR August 17th, 2007 at 10:51 pm

Vina said Gagne will get it together? He looked like he absolutely nothing. He has a low 90s fastball and his offspeed stuff is OK if he gets it over. RSN is already gunning for his head. The Gagne situation could get very ugly

  715. Stef August 17th, 2007 at 10:52 pm

YankeeJosh, Yeah, should probably rest Vizzie. I’d forgotten Viz had pitched last night.

If not Andy for the 9th, then Farns or Edwar. I might let Andy start the 9th, though, and let him stay until someone gets on base.

  716. Go NYR August 17th, 2007 at 10:52 pm

  717. Chicago Dave August 17th, 2007 at 10:52 pm

Kind of a waste, I’d say.

  722. Chicago Dave August 17th, 2007 at 10:53 pm

giambi you a re a cancer and have no offense and clearly make us lose. hahaha SHELLEY.

When Shelley wakes up in the morning he pisses excellence

  743. Chicago Dave August 17th, 2007 at 10:56 pm

I hope Andy is lobbying Joe to let him go out there for the ninth…

  744. tonyb August 17th, 2007 at 10:57 pm

Man, that was a Ron Hassey shot!

  745. Go NYR August 17th, 2007 at 10:57 pm

No, now is the time to let Pettitte finish the game

  746. Vinny 5743 August 17th, 2007 at 10:57 pm

3 for Phillips tonight too !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He was due too !!!

    PUT IN KYLE

  748. jennifer August 17th, 2007 at 10:57 pm

Didn’t Jeter twist his ankle in yesterday game?

  749. JJ August 17th, 2007 at 10:58 pm

putting joba in is giving him the feel of closing the game with training wheels on because of the score. Not a bad way to give him some 9th experience

  750. Chicago Dave August 17th, 2007 at 10:59 pm

Jeter should be rested tomorrow. Betemit can fill in for him…

  751. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named harold) August 17th, 2007 at 10:59 pm

can someone tell me wby the cws suck so badly

  752. kasey August 17th, 2007 at 10:59 pm

replace damon with cabrera and this ought to be your lineup most nights. i’m really tired of watching damon poke the ball into left-center and trot back to the dugout. maybe next year he’ll be the spark they need but, this year, he ought to be a late-inning pinch-hitter or pinch-runner.

  753. Vinny 5743 August 17th, 2007 at 11:00 pm

It’s a waste to use Joba now. Should have let Andy finish the game out. This will come back to bite them unless the rules suddenly change.

  754. Stef August 17th, 2007 at 11:00 pm

JJ — nice description “closing a game with training wheels on”!

  755. Go NYR August 17th, 2007 at 11:00 pm

jennifer- Im not even talking about that. He just doesnt look like his lower body is strong. I think it is more than a twisted ankle but that could also be a factor

  756. Chicago Dave August 17th, 2007 at 11:00 pm

OK, now Joba is in I hope he embarasses the crap out of Sheffield…

  757. jennifer August 17th, 2007 at 11:00 pm

damon won’t be here next year. Bank it, he’ll ask to be traded since he sees that he won’t be playing cf with Melky here.

  758. Rebecca August 17th, 2007 at 11:00 pm

Joba hasn’t even pitched to a batter yet and they’re already chanting his name!

  762. Gerry August 17th, 2007 at 11:01 pm

okay guys.. i’ll eat my words and shove my fist in my mouth. Of course I bash Giambi before the game and in between home runs and he has a great game. go figure.

Anyway, I’ll bash him tomorrow again around 11:30 and hopefully we’ll get another 2HR game.

Who cares what I say. Not like getting people to believe my argument is gonna make changes on the team. Its a place to vent frustration.

    Good Game!

  763. jennifer August 17th, 2007 at 11:01 pm

Come on JOBA!!! Get him out!!

  764. jennifer August 17th, 2007 at 11:02 pm

  770. Chicago Dave August 17th, 2007 at 11:03 pm

Boston Yankee – The White Sox have been flat all year. Their starters have been disappointing and their bullpen, which was supposed to be lights-out, has been a disaster. Moreover, their big hitters have either been injured or underperforming.

  771. tonyb August 17th, 2007 at 11:03 pm

Amazing how Sheffield got around on that fastball. I give him props.

  772. jennifer August 17th, 2007 at 11:03 pm

I wonder if Sheff can figure out why they are booing him. In his stupid head, it is probably that we are racist and the worst fans in baseball.

  773. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named harold) August 17th, 2007 at 11:03 pm

gerry you better bash him tomorrow

  774. Jeremy August 17th, 2007 at 11:04 pm

I’m with kasey, I don’t want to see Damon start anymore.

Giambi should be in the lineup every night, but that should be obvious by now.

So Joba comes in with a 5-run lead, big deal. He warmed up for a 4-run lead, and that’s nearly a save based on the arbitrary rules. He’s also facing the meat of the order.

I hope Edwar gets some work soon.

  775. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named harold) August 17th, 2007 at 11:04 pm

  780. Chicago Dave August 17th, 2007 at 11:06 pm

Boston Yankee – OK, sorry about that…Guess I was preaching to the chorus! Since I’m stuck here in Chicago, and get to watch nothing but Sox and Cubs games, I thought I’d try to be helpful…

  781. Jeremy August 17th, 2007 at 11:06 pm

  787. Chicago Dave August 17th, 2007 at 11:07 pm

  791. Go NYR August 17th, 2007 at 11:08 pm

Only a few sliders. If he would have thrown a slider to sheffield, it would have been very funny

  792. tonyb August 17th, 2007 at 11:08 pm

Wow. I credit Torre for using Joba today. We just learned a heck of a lot more about him. Those were four very good hitters and he only gave up a weak hit to the guy leading the league in hitting.

Great exclamation point on that win!

  793. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named harold) August 17th, 2007 at 11:09 pm

huge win by yanks huge loss by sox.

90 mph slider! THAT IS NUTS!!

  795. Cumberberg August 17th, 2007 at 11:09 pm

Andy did a helluva job as stopper tonight. They needed a big performance from him and he was AWESOME!

  796. Harley August 17th, 2007 at 11:09 pm

So six innings into his major league career, the kid has the stadium on their feet chanting his name.

Can anyone remember this happening before? I genuinely can’t.

  797. Viper August 17th, 2007 at 11:09 pm

    No, Dave.

He’s getting the day off, which didn’t make sense to burn him tonight with a 5-run lead.

  798. YankeeJosh August 17th, 2007 at 11:09 pm

Rivera should be available tomorrow with Viz and Edwar. Joba only went one and can pitch Sunday. Not bad.

  799. Chicago Dave August 17th, 2007 at 11:10 pm

Yes, much love (and mad props) to Joba!!! (Still would have liked to see Andy get the CG, but whatever…)

  800. Vinny 5743 August 17th, 2007 at 11:10 pm

Now to take the next two would be nice. Let’s hope we can.
    Night all.

  801. jennifer August 17th, 2007 at 11:10 pm

Andy didn’t think Jorge had a play, saw the runner in front of him.

  802. Mr Faded Glory August 17th, 2007 at 11:10 pm

If Torre won’t use Farnsworth for one inning with a five run lead, why is he even on the team?

*is immediately yelled at by Pete for making a slight question of Joe Torre’s bullpen management*

  803. Go NYR August 17th, 2007 at 11:11 pm

Dave- I would have gotten Andy the CG also

  804. Jonathon August 17th, 2007 at 11:13 pm

Maybe we should go back to the beginning of the night of the night and look at the comments….

So since Giambi came back, the Yanks have cooled off. This guy is a cancer to the team as a whole. – Gerry

    My favorite!!!

  805. J-Dawg August 17th, 2007 at 11:13 pm

This was a game that went just the way you would draw it up, a terrific performance by Pettitte to rest the bullpen, and then Joba comes in to end it. Andy, please come back next year!!!!!

  806. Chicago Dave August 17th, 2007 at 11:13 pm

Unfortunately, I’m guessing if they won’t depart from “The Joba Rules,” then the Yanks might be compelled to use Farnsworth tomorrow night. Still, I’ll just keep my fingers crossed and hope for a vintage performance from Clemens…so we won’t need the ‘pen too much!

  807. Scooter August 17th, 2007 at 11:14 pm

    Jennifer -

Maybe you can explain to Michael Kay why Joe used Joba in the 9th. Flaherty and Leiter couldn’t do it.

Kay kept yammering about “you’ve got a bullet in your gun”

Meanwhile, Joba hadn’t pitched in 4 days. He sure looked pretty sharp to me

  808. GoYanks August 17th, 2007 at 11:14 pm

Why are you leaving “Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named harold) ” after only 135 plus comments.

How will we make it without you.

  809. jennifer August 17th, 2007 at 11:14 pm

Maybe you’ll see them get away from the Joba rules in Sept. But I don’t think it will happen in Aug.

  810. 26 Rings August 17th, 2007 at 11:15 pm

Is Joba the next Paplebon or better? Is he going to start next year or what? One thing I do know, is that he is pretty damn good!

  811. Jeremy August 17th, 2007 at 11:15 pm

Joba was warming up with a 4-run lead. I bet one of the lesser known Joba Rules is that when you warm up Joba, you put him into the game.

  812. Andrew August 17th, 2007 at 11:15 pm

I am beginning to agree about Giambi…being a cancer and all, but I honestly I think the bats had to cool down at some point. Coincidence that they cooled down when Giambi came back, I don’t know…

  813. Scooter August 17th, 2007 at 11:16 pm

    Dave -

Farnsworth has looked much better lately – had a couple of 1-2-3 innings, AND has kept the ball down consistently

He’s definitely not been consistent, but he can get into a groove where he’s unhittable for a few weeks

  814. Chicago Dave August 17th, 2007 at 11:17 pm

Joba could be a truly great closer, and we could certainly use an heir to Mariano’s thrown. Still, we also need a bona fide ace/stopper on our starting staff, and I think Joba has more dominating stuff than Hughes…So, it’s a really tough call.

  815. 26 Rings August 17th, 2007 at 11:18 pm

Dont forget about the great job by Andy. We really needed it and he gave a big time performance.

  816. Chicago Dave August 17th, 2007 at 11:19 pm

Scooter – Unfortunately, I saw Farnsworth blow way too many games for the Cubs to have any faith in him now. Still, the Yanks are going to have to use him some more during this stretch run, so I hope you’re right and he does get into a good groove…

  817. 26 Rings August 17th, 2007 at 11:21 pm

It is going to be a really tough call about Jaba. Is he going to like Righetti?

  818. Kat August 17th, 2007 at 11:21 pm

it really was awesome to see the entire stadium on their feet, chanting “jo-ba” clap clap!! How electric it was there… i wonder what the kid must be thinking!

  819. Viper August 17th, 2007 at 11:24 pm

Joba should be a starter. I want 200 IP from him instead of 50-60 IP.

    It’s a no-brainer.

  820. Chicago Dave August 17th, 2007 at 11:26 pm

Viper – If only we could have Joba pitch EVERY inning for the Yankees! ;)

  821. 26 Rings August 17th, 2007 at 11:29 pm

Who is going to replace Mariano?

  822. 26 Rings August 17th, 2007 at 11:32 pm

I would love to see Jaba throw 200 innings as well. Do we have anyone remotely close to being able to close in the future? It is going to be a big time decison. Gagne will more than likely be available! He sucks! GO YANKS!

  823. Stef August 17th, 2007 at 11:33 pm

Posada said the throw was offline and that Phillips made the right call by cutting off that throw. Torre said Abreu was supposed to be backing up 2nd. (Waldman reporting)

  824. Rebecca August 17th, 2007 at 11:35 pm

    26 Rings–

Worry about that when we come to it.

I personally am torn. Joba would no doubt be an effective starter, but in the ‘pen, he’s lights out.

I like not being able to decide.

  825. Viper August 17th, 2007 at 11:37 pm

Maybe Humberto Sanchez could be the next closer.

None of this matters now anyways because Joba is in the rotation next season and Mo will be resigned for at least another two years.

  826. Go NYR August 17th, 2007 at 11:37 pm

I think it is safe to say Hughes was throwing harder than 90 yesterday. The Stadium gun had Joba at 100 and the YES gun had him at 94. They shouldnt use a radar gun (YES) if it doesnt work correctly

  827. 26 Rings August 17th, 2007 at 11:38 pm

No doubt he is dominant…….Jaba Rules!

  828. Stef August 17th, 2007 at 11:39 pm

Although I would love to see Joba every other day (the more, the better), a great starter is huge for a club. Can we find another closer to effectively replace Mo? Who knows?

Joba has such a terrific mental makeup. He seems to be perfect for that spot, doesn’t he?

  829. ZacksMom August 17th, 2007 at 11:39 pm

Andy Pettitte game us an incredible game tonight!!!! Joba was the icing!! Thanks, Andy!!!!!

  830. Jonathon August 17th, 2007 at 11:41 pm

Pettitte was huge once again for the Yanks. This is the difference from last year. After a rough stretch there is a stopper that can end a losing streak. Really a great night for the Yankees, the offense was clicking, Andy was dealing and the Yanks get a much needed win.

  831. 2Yankees143 August 17th, 2007 at 11:43 pm

Isn’t Humberto Sanchez supposed to take over for Rivera after he has his surgery and gets better? I thought that was what I heard

  832. Aye Aye Cap'n August 17th, 2007 at 11:45 pm

Gagme helps us out again….after we get our ring this year, The Boss needs to send that guy a 10K Bonus !

  833. Stacey August 17th, 2007 at 11:45 pm

Why is everyone blaming Giambi for these past three losses when all three revolved around certain pitchers (Karstens, Mo and Moose) all sucking?

    I don’t get it.

I guess he’s to blame for Global warming too?

  834. nate c. August 17th, 2007 at 11:46 pm

Why do we need to keep talking about a mo replacement? I mean – he isn’t retiring. He isn’t hurt. The way his body is built, why couldn’t he pitch for us for 3 more seasons?

  835. Jonathon August 17th, 2007 at 11:46 pm

Viper true…Joba will be in the rotation. Which is even more exciting to think about after the way he seems to blow through these major league hitters. Wouldn’t it be something if turns out that Joba is the future #1 starter and Hughes is #2…whatever…still a couple of years away.

  836. sunny615 August 17th, 2007 at 11:46 pm

Actually, the offense was pretty good the last game as well… 5 runs with a quality start will usually win a game. Moose and the pen was just not so good. Otherwise – it may have well have been a 5-3 or 5-4 win. And if Mo was on the day before, who knows if we could have one that last game as well against the O’s. No worries.

  837. Jonathon August 17th, 2007 at 11:48 pm

Stacey….you are right…the idea that it was the offense that went in the tank for the past three games is wrong…those loses were on the pitching…for some reason, people want to kill Giambi and offense for the past week…who knows.

  838. Aye Aye Cap'n August 17th, 2007 at 11:49 pm

  840. Rebecca August 17th, 2007 at 11:55 pm

    The Cash Man always delivers!

    Joba’s numbers:

    IP 5
    H 2
    R 0
    HR 0
    BB 2
    SO 9
    *WHIP .60*

    How unreal is that?

  841. NJ August 17th, 2007 at 11:56 pm

Clemens needs to give us a big outing tomorrow to guarantee at least a series split.

  842. Go NYR August 18th, 2007 at 12:00 am

Those are numbers from before Jobas appearance tonight

  843. Rebecca August 18th, 2007 at 12:03 am

I thought I adjusted them for tonight?

  844. mel August 18th, 2007 at 12:07 am

Richar of the Pale Hose hit his first homerun tonight. It’s one he’ll never forget. Grand Slam. Seattle up 5-4.

  845. Rebecca August 18th, 2007 at 12:11 am

    What inning?

  846. Jonathon August 18th, 2007 at 12:12 am

I like the match-up tomorrow…Clemens vs Durbin…looks like a few runs might be scored. Hopefully that will be a game the Yankees control early. Maybe Joe thinks that too. Could be the reason he used Joba tonight. The match-up on Sunday will be a little closer (Bonderman vs Wang) and I think he wants to be able to have Joba available in case the game is close. I think that’s why Torre used Joba tonight, so he could be used again on Sunday.

  847. . August 18th, 2007 at 12:12 am

Did they just changed the schedule so that Seattle plays Chisox every game now till end of season?

  848. Jonathon August 18th, 2007 at 12:13 am

    T7 for Richar GS

  849. mel August 18th, 2007 at 12:13 am

Bottom of the 7th. 2 outs, Contreras on the mound (as a converted reliever!)

  850. Dream 'em if ya got 'em ! August 18th, 2007 at 12:14 am

Winning the next 2 games and being only 3 games out of the division lead by midnight Sunday….awesome…finishing on an absolute TEAR through the end of the month, sitting at 80-55 when all is said & done on 8/31/07 and having the division lead all to ourselves….PRICELESS !!!

  851. Jonathon August 18th, 2007 at 12:15 am

I think Contreras started this game…didn’t he?

  852. mel August 18th, 2007 at 12:35 am

Yes, Jonathon, he did start. I remember him doing an inning of relief in another game and got my wires crossed. My bad.

  853. Marius August 18th, 2007 at 12:35 am

Contreras started the game as there are teams who are interested in him. This is a showcase for him, basically.

HE WAS demoted/promoted to the bullpen before this and pitched a few innings of relief.

  854. mel August 18th, 2007 at 12:44 am

That’s right, Marius. I remembered something about that. He was o.k. about it, but said he would be a starter next year.

  855. E-ROC August 18th, 2007 at 12:55 am

Runner on third for the White Sox in the bottom of the ninth with two outs.

  856. susan mullen August 18th, 2007 at 12:56 am

Re Giambi and his overall effect, he’s apparently the opposite of cancer. Quite extensive reporting last year on the whole Arod situation revealed a true leader in the clubhouse to be Giambi. This was NY Times columnist George Vecsey’s conclusion, saying in effect ‘the clubhouse leader in Oakland was reborn in New York.’ Vecsey didn’t ignore Giambi’s other character traits calling him “pigpen personified,” but there’s quite a bit of evidence that he’s no Gary Sheffield.

  857. E-ROC August 18th, 2007 at 12:57 am

    3-1 count on Josh Fields

  858. Rebecca August 18th, 2007 at 12:58 am

Why do there have to be two outs?!

  859. E-ROC August 18th, 2007 at 12:59 am

Josh Fields walked. Two on, two outs for the White Sox with Cintron at bat.
