Game 122: Tigers at Yankees
Here is the lineup:
YANKEES
Damon CF
Jeter SS
Abreu RF
Rodriguez 3B
Posada C
Matsui LF
Giambi DH
Cano 2B
Phillip 1B
Pettitte LHP
Pregame chatter: Sorry about the troll. If anybody’s interested pursuing a complaint, let me know and I will gladly send you his IP address. It could be time to require registration, which is something I’m against because I want people to comment. But as the blog becomes more popular, it becomes more popular with sociopaths.
Sorry for the problems. Meanwhile thanks to Brian Heyman for calling me with the lineup.
UPDATE, 9:36 p.m.: Full disclosure, I’m watching “High School Musical 2″ with my niece, who is enthralled. But based on the play-by-play, it sounds like The Big G hit a bomb to right.
UPDATE, 10:07 p.m.: Eric Gagne just blew another save for Boston. Angels threatening to take the lead in the ninth. It’s amazing how bad he has been. They lost Pabelbon and Okajima in Game 1.
UPDATE, 11:17 p.m.: Joba gave up a hit? Shocking. Quite a job by Andy Pettitte. Based on his last two starts, he has himself back together. That is very important as they move forward.

perfect lineup
Man I like Giambi off the bench a whole lot more. Seems like the opposing managers fear him more and he seems to embrace that role as a pinch hitter.
Wow – LHP starting for Tigers and no Shell Can in the lineup.
I don’t like the three lefties in a row — Giambi, Matsui, Cano… I feel like that could be fixed.
not that Detroit has any shut down lefty out of the pen or anything…
Where is the MelkMan?
I said this in the previous thread, but bears repeating:
Damon is a career .471 hitter (8-17) against Robertson while Giambi is a career .600 hitter (6-10) against him.
That’s why Melky and Duncan are sitting against the lefty.
I don’t like Melky sitting, we can use him on defense, but at least he’s available later.
Any word on any possible game delays? It’s raining pretty bad just northwest of the City
Melky hasn’t had a day off since since 7/20.
He needs a day off sooner or later so tonight makes sense.
Sir Phillip the Dead Bat back in auto-out nine hole.
I love Torre, but IMO Duncan should be in as the DH over Giambi. Maybe Giambi has great numbers off of him or something is up that I dont know about though.
Bright and sunny here.
I don’t know if Damon in center is the right move. Melky should be in center and Damon should be DH and Giambi waiting on the bench.
I have a nice feeling about the game tonight.
Can I hear a “LET’S GO YANKEES” from everyone!!!
giambi is 6-10 off robertson
*Let’s Go Yankees!*
“Damon is a career .471 hitter (8-17) against Robertson while Giambi is a career .600 hitter (6-10) against him.”
Can you say “small sample size?”
I hope we open a thundershower of baseballs in the outfield bleachers on this mole-puncher.
Thanks for taking care of the guy.
I’d be for registration. This blog has become very popular and there has to be some way to control these morons who come here.
JOhn L
that’s still pretty good though…
it still boggles my mind we pay giambi as much as we do to have him as a pinch hitter…but it seems like he’s really good or really really bad
It is pouring at the stadium, but I think the game will be played but be delayed.
Phillips can’t hit left handers I don’t know why he is playing and Shelly is on the bench. Another bone head Torre move. Torre always trying to mess around with the lineup.
yea im for registration to. jennifer what did the troll say i missed it
Meanwhile it is pouring here at the Stadium. Here’s hoping it stops soon and we can play some baseball.
whatever gets them a win at this point.
registration is a good idea.
I hope it gets delayed. Stuck at work. On a Friday…stinks.
Peter –
It must be an awful lot of work to keep this blog going. I am very grateful, I have really appreciated this forum and the analysis that is provided (by you and other respondents).
As a side note, Rick Carpiniello has done some very nice columns lately. Please pass it on.
Hey John L,
When your team has only faced a guy a few times, all you have are small sample sizes.
C’mon, have some common sense.
I don’t want to repeat it. But it was very childish and disgusting.
roy I get out of work early on Fridays
at least for the next 3 weeks.
Lori,
Make sure you keep us updated on the weather situation.
I had great seats for tonight but had to cough them due to previous engagement.
Pete – There needs to be registration, its time. At this point your blog has substantial traffic, and we should be aiming for quality, not quantity. I find myself not commenting when the nonsense becomes insufferable.
We should aim for well substantiated and cogent analysis. Not unrelenting voluminous gibberish.
BJ
Jennifer,
Oh I am suppose to too…but when a problem occurs, it needs to be fixed. Part of being a tax-paying adult.
ANSKY needs to keep making up ground on the beantown chowdah heads. But if Pettitte leaves after 7 or 8 in a tight game, does Joe call on Joba for a hold or save in bad weather? Seems like an injury risk to me.
This is a great lineup.
Time for John Sterling to coin a phrase for a Shelly Duncan home Run! How about “Duncan Dunks One”.
any word on us bringing someone up or finding someone for the pen?
jennifer: was it another racist thing
registration sounds good to me.
rude and useless comments cheapen this forum – and I think it is clear that peter is running one of the better yankee blogs on the web. if people say something silly, they should be held accountable. I like to think of this as a place where we’re all sitting around drinking a beer talking about that yankees.
isn’t that what we’re all about?
roy: they brought people up when the sent down karstens and bouer or however you spell it
nate im underage but sounds good to me
“jennifer: was it another racist thing”
Must be someone from Boston. Shouldn’t they be washing their pointy white hoods for the second game?
>> giambi is 6-10 off robertson
yeah. sure. whatever.
He’ll go 0-4 tonight. I’ve got money on it.
I`d like to see Shelley at first, although Joe has a gut feeling that Phillips will snap his slump tonite.
Yankee Rich:
Slam Duncan?
Nothing beats a live report from the stadium (thanks jennifer & Lori), but here’s a radar map: http://www.wunderground.com/cg.....ronx%2C+ny
thank you ranting guy, no one ever pulls out the ansky anymore…
I think that we’re pretty immune to the racist & homophobic comments, but when you start attacking Lester & the Jimmy V Fund it’s gone too far.
not another racist thing the guy was making sexual comments about kids with cancer
Boston Yankee – haha, these are ‘virtual beers’ if you will
Can’t read the map on this thing, but yeah, it’s still raining. Funny, because I checked accuweather on line before I left the house and they had it as a nice evening. Oh well. If I were a betting woman, I’d say we’re going to be delayed.
Roberston was the only Tiger Pitcher that the Bombers bombed in the playoffs last year.May history repeat itself if the game is played tonight.
Andy also has to play first tonight behind pettitte. You dont want Duncan at first in a big game with a grond ball pitcher on the mound.
pbl: that is absolutely disgusting
and roy im from boston believe it or not everyone isnt kkk or an idiot. i resent that
Mel–Amen.
Dis the BoSux all you want, but some things are just off limits.
At least true Yankee fans have enough class to know that.
If you don’t, I don’t want you rooting for my team.
Lori–Radar shows it’s still raining, but it should clear up. Don’t expect more than a 30-45 minute delay, but I’m no meterologist, so it might be in your best interest just to ignore me
ANSKY’s a classic!
Oh, Mel … the Jimmy Fund doesn’t get its name from Jimmy V, but I think everyone’s pretty much in agreement on the principle.
Lori, the radar shows rain over the Bronx with 2 other blobs in CT. Delays are o.k., as long as the game goes on and we win!
Nate Robertson vs. The New York Yankees on August 17*:
IP H R ER HR BB K
8. 4 1. 1. 00 3. 5
*Best Start of the Season.
Sorry I made it rain tonight, gang … I caused it by washing my car last night.
That stat line is very good. I think the Yankees should just default the game and take the loss. They wouldn’t want to be embarrassed by Robertson again.
Any rain delay will work in favor of the Tigers — just like last postseason’s rain postponement.
Looks like it is finally stopping! Yeah! I’m going to go dry off my seats and watch the Yanks win! GO YANKEES!
Adam S, your point is well taken, the glove over the bat.
line ups for both teams should be posted
Looks like a delay…
someone open a window?
some flies just come in…
lori: our own kim jones
And the tarp is coming off the field!
Pete’s off today. If you want lineups try mlb.com or espn.com. Good luck.
Whoo! Let’s play some ball!
Let’s Go team!
I can’t find the game anywhere!!
It’s on UPN/MY 9, but they’re showing King of Queens during the delay.
Any word on when the game will be played?
I know registration is the first thought to get rid of trolls, but will it really work? Troll registers, posts his dumb comments, gets account deleted. Finds another IP address or mask and registers with a different name, continues to troll.
I’m all for deleted lunatic comments. Am I missing something? Perhaps a board moderator during the games other than Peter might work. Someone he trusts. I think that might be a better way.
So since Giambi came back, the Yanks have cooled off. This guy is a cancer to the team as a whole. He plagued them in the beginning of the season then he goes on the DL for 3 months and the Yanks play .700 ball. He comes back and its back to shambles and April like baseball. Granted he got a few key hits, but this guy needs to ride the bench and come in for pinch hit or something. Giambi playing everyday kills this team. I think Damon in left, Melky in center and Matsui at DH is the best case scenario because the defense is upgraded with Melky’s arm and Damon’s speed and gives the yanks that Strawberry/Ruben Sierra bat off the bench.
Torre even said before Giambi came back that things wouldn’t change, why alter things if they’re going so well? Well look at how things are right now and tell me how things have changed.
I know Melky needs a day off but I’d rather see Duncan that Giambi. But then again, this is all my opinion and observation.
Um, Giambi helped the Yanks win two games in CLE last weekend.
Giambi is a cancer? Puh-leez.
GO YANKEES!!!!!!!!!!!
Board moderators mean it takes that much longer to get our comments posted and approved, unless you just mean moderators to watch the board while the game is in progress and delete inappropriate comments.
In which case I’m for it.
Normally when games are on MY9, its on FOx here. But the tvguide channel says that the simpsons are on and the game has not been shown for any channels.. does anyone have this same problem?
delay?
I think a board moderator would be a good idea.
Gerry,
You’ve got to be kidding. The Yankees success is due to the Giambi injury?
+.400 OBP guys with power don’t generally hurt a team.
Heading to the ballpark this weekend?
The Tigers / Yankees should be a great series…anyway,
Include details from the game as well.
I’m trying to see if I can get people from all over the country to send me camera phone (or digital camera) shots of every ballpark in MLB before the season ends. If you head out to see the Yanks/TIgers series and want to have a photo from the game posted on my blog, just email it on over. Photos including players, celebs, beer vendors, ushers get bonus points
jimwxyz
lifeislikebaseball@gmail.com
lifeislikebaseball.blogspot.com
I`m all for registration. Annoying but worth \it. A moderator who just watches the boards and deletes bad comments would be good
jennifer-
watcha using for communications? Lori uses a blackberry.
Lori, any word on the delay/the game?
Enoch,
Its called “Team Chemistry”. Giambi is a liability in the field and clogs up the DH spot. He forces everyone to play the field and not rotate the DH hole. He may have a .400 OBP but a lot of the team has high numbers. Without Giambi, the Yankees had a 1.027 OPS in July. THE ENTIRE TEAM had that as an average, not one guy. Completely unheard of.
I like this team 50 times more without Giambi and Im sure if you ask 10 people, 8 will say the same thing. He’s a great clubhouse guy, but he needs to go.
what rebecca said
Hey, can anybody think of a good sports bar somewhere on the Upper West Side that’ll be airing the game? My boyfriend’s little sister is at my apartment tonight and she wants to watch High School Musical 2… or maybe we’ll just be delayed until 10:00!
Ahhhh…. nice big pizza, a chance to finally hit the blog during game time in what seems like ages, and a cold mojito in hand. Hello, people.
Looked bad when they ended up not taking off the tarp. Raining again here in the Bronx.
k thanks lori keep up with the updates i appreciate it
Radar looks worse than it did a minute ago. If they start the game by 9 I’ll be impressed.
wolf in pinstripes i havent seen you for awhile. what gives?
Rebecca, I’m talking about a moderator who reads the comments and deletes anything inappropriate. At least during the game threads. Pete shouldn’t have to worry about the blog during the game when he should be focussed on covering the game and writing his articles.
Although Beckett did not give up a run in the top of the 1st, it took the @$$ 24 ptiches to get through it….
I’m not at the stadium
I saw video from ys.
I agree yankeejosh. ALthough I don’t think his paper would want to pay someone to do it. but maybe he could choose 2-3 regular blogers, to keep an eye out and delete inappropitate postings.
YankeeJosh: Yep, in that instance I’m for it.
Didn’t know if you meant each post had to go through a submission process or not. Different boards moderate in different ways
This game is not going to get played its going to be on and off for awhile. Looks like we’ll play 2 tomorrow.
“wolf in pinstripes i havent seen you for awhile. what gives?”
Busy working my tail off at my job and putting a ton of time into setting up two websites in my free time. Matter of fact, a lot of my time lately has gone into setting things up to prevent spam and trolls at them. LOL
Thanks for the shout-out, though – good to be back in action!
another small victory: ortiz strikes out and continues to suck
good to have you back and another sense of reason-non panicking-non joe torre bashing poster
KJ: Do you know for sure?
It’d make more sense to play two on Sunday, because you can do a 1.00 start and a 7.00 start; tomorrow’s game is a 3.55 start, thus they’d have to play two games in a row immediatley following one another.
_I like this team 50 times more without Giambi and Im sure if you ask 10 people, 8 will say the same thing. He’s a great clubhouse guy, but he needs to go._
Your hatred for Giambi isn’t going to change anything because he is going nowhere because of his contract.
Secondly, perhaps you should consider that the Yanks have also faced the best pitching in the last few games than they have seen in a month with Guthrie, Bedard, and Verlander.
Winning = Chemistry
i agree with viper there is no way it isnt good that giambi is back
Why do they have to show the Bernie Mac show? I can’t stand it. I guess is a good time to pack for tomorrow.
Be back in a bit.
I think you can take Guthrie off that list…his last few starts have been awful, including the one against the Yankees.
They’ve had Bedard sure and Verlander too but those loses were on the Yankees pitching, the offense has been fine (excluding the 12-0 aberration on Tuesday).
they can’t play a doubleheader on Sunday because ESPN has a monopoly on the 7PM time slot
I’m going to watch an episode of Dr. Who. Once it finishes downloading.
Does this mean we will lose a starter next week against the LAA?
Its going to be time for the Jeff Karstens show again, and I didnt like the episode last week.
What happened to Mirabelly? He played only 1 inning in the first game. I thought they realized all of sudden that it wasn’t Wakefield on the mound, but they said it was an injured leg.
Eric: Ah, didn’t realize that!
Rebecca
I know, and agree that delaying comments would make the blog less fun.
The Yanks have to go out west to L.A. Sunday night so playing two Sunday would not be ideal. Of course, playing two tomorrow with a 3:55 start also isn’t ideal either
Looks like tonight’s game is off? Then it’s Pettitte and Clemens and pray for the bullpen on Sat. When would game time be?
Lori-
did they take the tarp off and put it back on?
And here’s a picture of our Peter working hard at Wednesday’s game.
Say “Springsteen,” Peter (in the middle, wearing “red”)
http://tinyurl.com/yt7rrr
Guess that means they’ll try to get the game in tonight any way they can…
Ava-
NYC is not a sports bar town, but Blondies at 212 W 79th is a good one. And of course, Mickey Mantle’s near Central Park South is good but might not be in the right ‘hood for you.
im gonna watch the jets preseason game if this is delayed
how do i refresh the comments so i dont have to start over?
What channel is the Jets on? I can’t find it.
They pulled it off to dump the water, folded it as if to roll it up, and then pulled it back on. They spent some time fixing up the dirt around the edges and then the rain started.
May be stopping. We’ll see.
Looks like the tarp is coming off
Mirabelli strained his Calf running around 3rd base.
Tarp is coming off…
Viper,
I agree with you. They have faced some tough pitching lately and I know my banter isn’t going to get him off the team. I just wish Torre would accept his role as a bench player and leave it at that. I’d love if Giambi came off the bench in the 6th and played a few innings.
Moose had a bad game and Karstens isn’t 100%, two key losses. I hope Edwar and Joba da Hut play tonight. The kids will add the flare the team lacked last season. Shelley, C+C, Hughes and Joba will inject this team of overpaid superstars with some life and the fire most lack.
Don’t bite my head off, i love Jete, Arod, HipHip, etc. But i LOVE the fire they bring.
Rebecca,
Jets will be on Fox tonight, Channel 5 in NY.
_I think you can take Guthrie off that list…his last few starts have been awful, including the one against the Yankees._
Not scratching Guthrie off any list. He came into Monday’s action with a 3.22 ERA this season – which placed him #6 in the AL in ERA.
Tarp back on.
Wait, wait – are they getting ready to roll it up? YES! Folding it up!
Thanks lori and YankeeJosh!
Harold if you refresh when your at the bottom of the postings it should go back to there.
Lori: GREAT news! (Let’s hope, anyway. If they play awful again it might then be construed as really bad news…)
Lori are you at the stadium?
Gerry,
I don’t think letting the kids play and leaving vets on the bench indefinitely is the right thing to do either.
These guys are all vying to play more often and it’s good to have a competition.
Besides, you don’t want Damon or Giambi to sit on the bench for a long time and expect them to produce late in the game when they are stone cold.
Torre is trying to mix and match and give everyone ABs. I think he’s doing the right thing.
for those of you bored out there, enjoy some fan art:
http://migames.wordpress.com/2007/07/10/fan-art/
Viper…look at his starts since the All-Star break…this was a guy who had a good first half…not in the same league as Bedard and Verlander…and the Yankees went to town on him…
Just thought i’d let everyone know Beckket is throwing a no hitter.
I have one question I wonder if anyone knows it.
Why would Socia (sp) move Lackey his ace from a game against the soxs ace, to a game against a rookie? ANd have a pitcher who just came back up from the minors to face the soxs ace?
Just as I say it no hitter is gone
sorry jennifer but before you said it it was gone and also they have a run too
Why should you be sorry? This is good news…
Auh why couldn’t you let me think I was a jinx?
in boston, a fan weeps
no hitter and shutout
both are gone
never been happy to hear kay until now
A pitcher who is struggling doesn’t mean he’s no longer a good pitcher.
Wang has struggled for awhile too, but that doesn’t diminish his status as the ace of the Yanks.
Not saying that Guthrie is an ace or comparable to the top pitchers in the league, but he’s still having a great season and you seem to be downplaying his accomplishments.
the doopler looks good. game on!
i didnt want to show jennifer up. and down goes hinske
“Its called “Team Chemistryâ€?. Giambi is a liability in the field and clogs up the DH spot.”
Chemistry happens when teams win. Team win because they score runs which are caused by men getting on base. Giambi does this almost as good as any player in baseball. The notion that he clogs up the basepaths is McCarver-esque.
Yes, he presence makes it less possible to rotate regulars to the DH spot, but the notion that they are winning BECAUSE he was out is ridiculous. Hot players cool off. Good teams lose games. It had nothingn to do with Giambi’s return.
Well, we all know now: If Petitte is pitching well, like really really really well, NOT TO SAY ANYTHING!
i just heard on nesn george gave a load to the jimmy fund: good for him
yea never talk about andy doing well and never admit that JOHNNY DAMON DOESNT SUCK!
Harold-
you can refresh by hitting the F5 key on top of your keyboard.
Yep, at the stadium. But now need to pay attention to my daughter so I’m off this thing for a while. GO YANKEES!
Clearing up at ys, we will have baseball. cleaning up the field. we are made to watch comics unleshed. why can’t we watch them prepare the field?
I’d rather watch that
haha thanks lori
jennifer: You aren’t the only one.
Fortunatley, the J-E-T-S are on
We need someone to alert us when the game is on.
who else is a jet fan?
Dude…Viper…track record. Guthrie hasn’t pitched a good season until the 1st half of 2007. Wang has been nearly a 20 game winner for two seasons and has had 2 rough games.
I mean you are entitled to your opinion but I don’t know before I call him one of the best pitchers in baseball I need more that a good 1st half of one season.
time for andy to step up
Lets go Giants!!!!!
Like the Jets a lot to though
Lets go Giants!!!!!
Like the Jets a lot to though
jennifer: Impressive that there are so many JETS fans, cos usually it’s Yankees/Giants.
Strange how that works, huh?
I’ve heard the parking situation is an absoulte mess at Giants Stadium. I usually go to 2-3 games sometimes 4 a year. But if I have to park 2 miles away and pay $25 to boot, I think I might watch it from the comfort of my living room.
I’ve always been a Jet fan. Espically a Wayne Chrebet (LOVE HIM) and Curtis Martin fan.
Not sure how many of you watched the 1st game in Boston today but they had some great stories. If you can afford to give, call the telethon number. Was great to see a kid who wrote Lester a letter telling him “if I can do it, you can do it” – took off his braces and ran the bases before the start of the second game. Just AWESOME!!!!!
jennifer: It is usually a mess, yes. However, this year my friend and I are going to the Jets/Buffalo game in Buffalo (I live very close to East Rutherford, but I go to school in Syracuse, and we can get to and from Buffalo in a day)
damn we can’t escape Joe Buck!
sorry guys im a big pats fan not really fond of the nj jets or nj giants
Boston Yankee: Are you secretly Tom Brady?
I don’t know if I can talk to you anymore Boston Yankee. >:(
LOL j.k
YANKEE BASEBALL>
pepper brooks i saw the first and am watching this. i saw the kid run around the bases it was very moving. and that little girl who yells and runs around kissing the sox is cute, she was yelling yankees suck which was a shame. but still cute. i hate the sox but they and the jimmy fund do some good stuff
Rebecca and Jennifer,
I’m a Jets fan too. Got into football during the Mid-80′s when the Jets had that 10-1 start. I’m actually the rare combination Yankees/Jets/Islanders fan.
GAMETIME WOOHOO !!!!!!
uh ho ortiz fouled a ball off his bad knee. i want the yanks to win and the sox to lose but i want ortiz to be at his peak when the yanks crush them
no rebecca im not the golden boy. ive never impregnated a girl. an ex has had a baby. but it wasnt mine
Yankees/Devils/Jets/Nets, in that order.
I can easily explain the Devils and Nets because I’m a Jersey girl, but the Jets defies explanation–everyone else in my immediate family likes the Giants (though my grandma’s a Jets fan). Basically, one year they both made the playoffs, and I liked the atmosphere of the Jets game better than the Giants game. And they won and the Giants didn’t. That helped as well.
oh rebecca i just got that. yea that was great i rubbed that hat thing in all my friends face
OH what a shame.
I wanna see Speier, Shields, and Rodriguez blow the Red Sox back to 1978.
Hahaha!
_I mean you are entitled to your opinion but I don’t know before I call him one of the best pitchers in baseball I need more that a good 1st half of one season._
Never said that Guthrie was one of the best pitchers in baseball at all.
This is what I wrote:
*Not saying that Guthrie is an ace or comparable to the top pitchers in the league*, but he’s still having a great season and you seem to be downplaying his accomplishments.
lol jennifer im 18 im not ready to be a father
god, phillips playing 1st base. Give the game away Torre. Al Lieter is a republican
My Oh what a shame was reffering to Ortiz hitting the ball off his knee.
why are you guys getting down on andy. he has done a lot for the yanks
Yankees/Giants/Jets
In that order
GOTCHA
Funny i’m watching the Jet game. And you normally can’t hear the signal calls, but because there are like 5,000 people in the stadium, you can hear word for word what is said.
Anyone else just see that on the game? I’d say someone didn’t know they were on the air…
damit the guy in the white shirt isn’t one your team!!
since everyone else is:
Yanks/Pats/Dodgers/Celtics/Bruins/everyother team in baseball/the red sox
in that order
Jennifer,
I thought it was in reference to me beingan Islanders fan. It’s been a long hard ride.
Rebecca,
Yeah, the Islanders defy reason with me but I got into them after the Cup years while they were still competitive. I’m not really a basketball fan.
What just happened MIke?
that judge david young looks like fun.
Viper…
Ok…we will see where Guthrie ends up at the end of the season…like I said you are totally entitled to your opinion but I’m not going to put Guthrie up there with Bedard and Verlander as tough pitchers the Yankees have faced lately.
Like I said, he’s going to have to do it for more than 1/2 of one season to be a top pitcher.
Labor is only two weeks away.
Where in the hell did the summer go??
so fast. way too fast.
Dr. Acula,
And winter always seems so long.
First pitch 8:19pm a strike
okay lieutenant general you suck… how do you like them apples.
if everybody else isnt watching yes they had a national guard guy. hes an orioles fan. he goes one think orioles and sox fans can both agree on: yankees suck.
Dr. don’t remind me!! I hate when summer is over!!
why are don henley, circa 1984??
What just happened MIke?
?
Wow, Cameron Maybin is one big kid.
Sheff gets boooed again!!
yea mike what happened
Mike it was in responce to this
Mike
August 17th, 2007 at 8:17 pm
Anyone else just see that on the game? I’d say someone didn’t know they were on the air…
Did everyone’s picture just go nuts?
yea mike what happened
In what?
has anyone here ever heard al leiter say he doesnt like a ballplayer he played with?
NICE 1-2-3 for Andy Pettitte!!!
Andy making a statement. Let’s pound Robertson.
Love the Boos for Sheff and the loud cheers when he sat down!!
nice Pettitte. Settling in fast
Let’s Go Yankees….. Let’s Go Yankees….. Let’s Go Yankees…
Feel good about Pettitte tonight.
jennifer im on mlbtv mines fine
Mike it was in responce to this
Oh, not me, sorry
Jennifer
Agreed. I was never a huge Sheffield fan when he was here, but what he did this year deserves all the boos he gets.
I’m the first one here to criticize Torre’s bullpen moves but he is a good man and what Sheff said about him infuriates me whenever I think about it.
wheres that clown who said matsui sucks. how volatile some of this guys are is hilarious
It’s so important to get to the bullpen early if we can today, to set up these next two games
I hate Torre, but there is no way in hell he is a racist.
Sheffield (age 37) has 18 (19?) steals. How many does Jeter have? Arod? Melky? Cano?
Friend’s over, have fun watching the game all, catch you later.
GO YANKEES!
My mlb.tv keeps crashing.
Dr. Acaula, did you mean Labor Day or are you giving birth in the near future?
Making the statement Wussina couldn’t yesterday…the difference between a player with heart and a soft player.
JOHNNY YOU SUCK
later rebecca stay young
Ugh
Way to f up the rally, Captain.
Well that sucked
jeter is in some kind of slump
i know this is blaspheme, but i’m so sick of seeing somebody work a long count and a walk and then seeing jeter swing at the first pitch and ground into a DP.
When I see GIDP pop up on Gameday a little piece of me dies
Stolen bases:
Jeter: 12
Melky: 10
Cano: 3
A-Rod: 15
Certainly respectable numbers except for Cano.
How many times does Jeter get to hit into a double play this year on the FIRST FREAKIN’ PITCH after the guy before him works a walk before Torre punches him SQUARE IN THE FACE and tells him to F*CKIN’ STOP IT !!!???
Arod’s due
10 by melky: he did that quietly
You’re not alone, kasey. It irritates the crap out of me too.
For-ty, for-ty, for-ty….. come on, Alex.
it irritates me but hes the captain. he redeems himself with as many clutch hits as he gets dps
Those look like they were 3 good pitches
Crap. Vinny, you and I might want to not say anything next time Arod bats. LOL
Robertson is the most underrated starter in the AL;…at least his perfect game / no hitter has been broken.
Wolf — I’m on MBL.TV and it’s been perfect. I’m watching in Asia, though, so maybe it makes a difference. Better technology.
angels have first and third and no out
Nice play by Cano!
cano is making that his signature move
everyone seems to hate torre, but man, arent things better than the buck showalter days. Buck was a dork, he had no emotions and use to talk about griffey and how he wore his hat wrong. Idiot. I much rather have Torre than Showalter, Stump Merrill, Bucky Dent, Dallas Green etc…
I guess not Wolf. Don’t want to jinx him.
migames: i still have one-hundred percent love for joe and laugh at the jokers
wolf- oops “labor day”
YankeeJosh – seems like winter is getting longer and longer. I mean, its still cold on opening day and the first two week of April. It didn’t used to be like that in the 70s or 80s.
Gawd, the music at stadium is hoooorible. now they’re playing whatsherface from american idol
runners on first and second. 2-0 angels. only one out
Can anyone remember Mussina ever being a stopper for our team? I want a bulldog in there like Andy when we’ve been losing.
i hear that stef he has fire
Stef…kudos to you…exactly
Nice!
how can the tigers have someone on their lineup with a t.290 obp. Thats lame
Big play!!!!!! Awesome!!!!
NIIIIIIIIICCE
YES!!!!!!!
Nice play Posada and Arod.
all my money in the bank that Ivan Rodriguez doesn walk
migames: his name is Pudge Rodriguez. That’s how.
make love to me andy
Can we stop the bashing of the players. If it isn’t Andy it is Mike.
I love the contrast in Andy: southern gentlemen / bulldog.
Did I see a little pitchout? That’s awesome!
pudge needs to leave baseball, no one with such a low on base perc should be anywhere near a baseball field
cleveland is up 2-0 on tampa. 2 outs two on in the boston game
Pete – something has to change. The “IM”-like conversations between a few readers is really annoying.
Keep those updates coming in Boston Yankee, thanks.
Pudge hasn’t been as good since he had to go off the juice. He got so much smaller since testing started.
I really hope that was instant replay, not Chad’s second INT return of the game…crap, that’s real time…
no anthony ca it wasnt a pitchout. it was a delayed steal by gullen
Pudge is a first-ballot Hall of Famer.
Yeah, let’s just run him out of the league.
Spoke too soon: the typhoon going on right now is making my image jump on MLB.com. Hey, but at least I get to LISTEN to the melodious tones of Michael Kay…
jwc: there are numerous people that like that. if youll scroll up youll see someone wanting it to be like guys sitting around drinking beers
vinny if you want them ill keep them up. if nobody wants updates ill stop. im doing them cause i figure people want them if nobody does im not going to type to give my fingers a workout
craig biggio is another 1st ballot hof, but he to, needs to leave, several seasons ago.
Ron he threw antother int?
Pudge is a first-ballot Hall of Famer.
Yeah, let’s just run him out of the league
So’s Yogi Berra
LEts bring him back
migames there is a pretty big age difference between those guys
Stef-
really?
Weird.
I’m out here on the Pacific, and it’s coming in crystal clear on the satellite.
This offense is revolting.
im pretty sure im not the only one who wants jorge back next year. what do you guys think? or do you think hes over the hump
>> giambi is 6-10 off robertson
>> yeah. sure. whatever.
He’ll go 0-4 tonight. I’ve got money on it.
Giambi. 0-1 so far. I’m a quarter of the way to my $200.
I appreciate them if it’s not too much trouble for you. No sweat if it’s a burden though. Thanks again.
6 years difference.
If the point of baseball is getting not making outs. Pudge ranks 167 out of 174. Yes, he should leave the game
junlio lugo on second one out. 2-0 still
Dr. A — the video wiggles here and there. The last few minutes have been great again. Hey, I’m not complaining — at least I didn’t have to work today. I adore typhoons for that very reason (as long as no one gets hurt…).
Happy Birthday, Jorge.
A Leo, sure enough.
Pourterican!
chill on the lineup….its fine
vinny: i have nesn on and am watching yankees on my computer and talking to you guys so updates are no problem. ill give them when something happens
People were getting rid of Posada at the end of ’05 and ’06 as well, how’d that turn out ? A player can’t have a bad year without being sent to Siberia by some fans.
ervin santana is actually dealing 5.2, 2 hits not bad
sox retired in 6th. going into the seventh
Why did Andy cut it off? And why wasn’t anyone at second?
Offense revolting?…they scored 7 runs Monday, 3 runs Wednesday and 5 runs yesterday. I’d take that anytime…
well andy just cost us a run. so he is now a negative today on offense and defense.
WHYD HE CUT IT OFF?! is it just me or did they have him
crap
Why did Phillips cut that ball off ???
why did phillips did that?
Andy’s tremendous reactions more than make up for his meager bat.
WHY WAS CANO THERE?!!!?! WHY
Pudge hit .300 last season and is hitting .280 this season.
He’s still one of the best defensive catchers in the league in throwing out runners.
Yeah, this guy sucks.
dumb dumb dumb
I don’t understand why there was no one at second? Where was Robbie?? Can they show that on a replay?
Cano was right behind A-Rod. Is that a break-down or should someone else be covering?
that is not yankee fielding that is baltimore fielding that is disgusting
Viper, batting average doesn’t mean crap.
wait to play defense against your own team andy.
Forget about batting average my friend. He DOESNT get on base.
Where was cano?
Can’t WAIT to hear on the postgame if Jorge yelled “cut” to Andy P. Man, that throw looked like it was on line.
Cano was over at third…
Why was Cano at third? Alex was there.
jennifer: cano was backing up jeter. the problem was when an outfielder is in the corner, JETER DOESNT NEED BACKING UP!
Suck it up and pitch, Pettitte.
They’ll show if Andy is spoken to after the inning. If he is he likely did something wrong.
i can name 10 catchers in the american league that have thrown out more runners than pudge
_Viper, batting average doesn’t mean crap._
You’re right, Ron.
Why do we even keep record of that ridiculous statistic?
Doesn’t mean anything.
That might’ve been the dumbest point I’ve seen on this blog lately.
The pic on Gamecast makes Maybin look like the poster child for “Jerry’s Kids”!
so viper is from the 1970′s. cool
Jinxed yourself, Stef.
Actually, I think it’s a network problem in my home where we have a router set up off of my cable modem.
Our offense is going to break out again this weekend. I just feel it.
Viper, they keep far more important statistics too. One that weren’t first kept before the invention of the ENIAC.
Surprised to see Cam Maybin called up so soon.
Detroit is very aggressive in the draft and then very aggressive with getting prospects to the majors.
It’s worked with their pitchers we’ll see with Maybin. He was hurt this year and missed some time. Came back, got promoted to AA and tore it up the last two weeks or so.
A world of talent.
Look forward to the yankees getting high ceiling position players into the system. To get anyone close to the Maybin level it may have to come from an international signing. The Maybin level talents don’t fall far even due to signability.
“That might’ve been the dumbest point I’ve seen on this blog lately.”
No, actually, ron is right.
Leiter talks waaaaay to much
P.S. – What happened to the Yanks that won all those games right after the All Star break? In the last few they’re showing disturbing signs of reverting back to the hapless Yankees of earlier this year.
Regardless, if they want to stay in this thing they really need to wake up tonight and pull one out. For that matter, I think they need to win the next two as well. Dropping 3 of 4 or getting completely swept by Detroit in this series would sink them.
Sheff worries me in this spot
Just ask his teamates. LOL
I don’t even have to look at the tv to know who is batting now.
Are they cheering “you’re a racist?”
Nice. Big K for Andy there.
Sheffield with the 3 run HR. 4-0.
were they just chanting not a racist? and steriods?? HAHAA
I agree JJ
Geez, I’m out of it today, I haven’t perused any sites today, let alone my paper. An Aside: My stupid cat won’t retrive my paper, even when I coat it in tuna oil!
but everyone has so been so bummed I wanted to pitch in on our site. yes, our site, we are family.
So he thinks they were booing him cause he’s somebody. I guess he figured out that, that wasn’t the reason?
2-1 cleveland in the bottom of the 6th so atleast tampa scored.
top of the seventh in boston still 2-0
Pudge has been one of the top catchers in the game in the last 10 years all around. You can nit pick different stats all you want but he is a HOF catcher in waiting. A 10 time all star, WS winner, etc. He is a high caliber player who’s having a rough year. You don’t discard a guy like that as if he’s an old shoe.
I think they’re saying “GARY SUCKS!”
Let’s like get a friggin’ lead, alright? Robertson is a garbage pitcher.
so far andy p is pitching a big game. the type we brought him here for. andy phillips has kind of screwed him, but im confident if we get to 4 runs we win.
I love pettitte….gutty and professional…..now lets get him some run support
WOW That is not the Sheff I remember
No it is something about being racist.
Dr. Acula – OK, even if your cat WOULD fetch a paper dripping in tuna oil, would you really want to read it?!
On the replay of the cutoff just now before the break, it looked like Andy P was mouthing, “what happened” to either Jorge or Andy P.
what vinny said
good thing I jinxed him.
vinny, sure, you can change the word pudge with randy johnson but it still doesnt mean that they should keep playing and hurting their current teams. what you did in 1998 doesnt win you games in 2007
Just saw the replay of the run the Tigers scored. Is it me or was Cano and Phillips completely out of the rotation? Why was Cano on third?
Robertson is certainly a crap pitcher. The Yankee offense that was crankin’ through the Cleveland series would have had him on the ropes by now. However, it seems the offense has gone distinctly cold as of late…
Time to roll right now guys.
_what vinny said_
Ditto.
I have absolutely confidence in Andy and his .481 August OPS.
miracle!
Like I said, I have absolute confidence in Andy.
Well Andy got a hit, so everyone can get off of him now.
phillips trying to redeem himself
Batting average has its flaws but it’s not a meaningless stat. The fact is a walk isn’t as good as a hit. Singles drive in runs more often than walks. Extra base hits drive in more runs and put pressure on pitchers. Yes, I know slugging percentage factors that in. Batting average is a tool to measuere players by. Taken with OBP, it has it’s merits.
Alright, guys, let’s keep the momentum going now… Don’t screw this up, Damon!
Well looks like Santana is collapsing. 2nd 3rd no out.
I swear to god if the Angels dont put in Shields right now I’m going to be so angry
Mabye Its me but I’d rather have melky up here
Fine, but a sub .290 OBP means that you are a very bad baseball player.
batting average does have some merits but not when judging too fairly close players. if one guy is at 300 and another guy at 270 the 270 hitter could clearly be the better player if you look at other more meaningful stats.
yea chicago dave remember those days? the yanks would have 10 by now. if someone could invent something to eat that gets you out of offenseive slumps like rogers eggs in 61* theyd be a billionaire
and that wasn’t deep enough to tag?
come on!
Another mistake by Cano?
Damon is crap this year…
cano is out of it tonight
jennifer he got taken out just now so maybe speier can do it. hes pretty good.
and no jj i would too but melky hasnt had an off day in forever so he needs it
ortiz scores from third. one out man on second bottom of the 7th
Avoiding an out is more important than getting a hit
Gosh darnit!! Scored a run!
No migames and you don’t disregard him for the one bad year he’s had either. This is not fantasy baseball. These are players lives and livings your dealing with. If a player has given you his best all those years he deserves a little more consideration than to be put out to pasture after a bad half of a season. If the teams did that with every player they had cotracts would be quadruple of what there are right now and the players union would be up in arms as well as the players themselves. ALL Players slump at times in their careers. It is not abnormal.
Cano is slow and he’s in scoring position already…why risk it…didn’t need to tag.
and the Yankees look really bad for the 4th game in a row..
ump sucks
Absolutely freakin’ pathetic…
sorry dj that was a good pitch
That was INSIDE!! why does it seem like the opposing pitchers get a zone wide enough to drive a truck thru, and we get one the size of a postage stamp.
and just as i see it from the top its a strike. nvm i take it back. dj you have a great eye srry for doubting you dont kill me
abreu needs to come thru here
Chicago Dave-
I just want her to be a Youtube icon.
I guess that makes me a “stage dad” HA!
HEY CHRISS YOU SERIOUSLY SUCK
I think these pitches all look fine… for whatever reason arod, jeter, abreu — are all watching this 90mph heat that doesnt have a lot of noticeable movement.
caught a break. we needed that
Lucky bounce!! Now Arod needs to come thru.
im not so scared of jeter im scared hell send shelley after me
Now that’s some f*ing good luck right there.
To quote Joe mabye the f—–g worm has turned
abreu, thank you for turning your season around.
That’ll do!
Wow, I never thought I’d be thankful for Bobby Abreu…But, hey, any port in a storm, right?!
Lets see a replay. Should award, bobby home.
yanks finally get luck. havent seen that in a few games. a rod yove gotta be kidding me! YES!
*BABE’S INVISIBLE HAND*
I thought that was a homerun… here is where the ground rule double sucks – abreu could have scored… but I still like it.
A little birthday hit for Jorge??
dr is that babe or roger (the true homerun king)?
We needed a little luck tonight. We got some. Now let’s make the best of it.
Floodgates. Open ‘em up, boys.
Damn! Why didn’t that ball stay in fair territory?!!
Viva Joe Torre!
robbies had a rough night
About time the Yankees wake up, they have been sleeping for 3 games now.
Bases Loaded for Mats. I expect a Grand Slam here and nothing less from the Godzilla.
Make em pay Godzilla!
i have a feeling we need any run we can get
ANGELS HAVE VLAD ON THIRD WITH NO OUT!!!!
Make em pay for that intentional walk and almost HBP, Matsui!
I hope Matsui is TICKED.
“one bad year he’s had either”
Ivan has been in decline for the past 4 seasons. Each year, worse than the other one. There is a reason why Bernie doesnt live here anymore
Come on blue!
Mats loves a cripple count
guys there is no way that was intentional… hbp with bases loaded? doubtful.
VLAD SCORES!!! 3-1
Walk that run home, baby!
wow not like mats on a cripple count
come on!!! get an eye!
homer! 4-1 angels!
4-1 LAA
My heart can’t take it. COME ON MATSUI !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
as much as i love seeing matsui flail at ball four like an idiot, wouldn’t it be a little more productive to act like the “professional hitter” he’s billed as and take the walk?
lotta mental mistakes at the plate lately from this veteran offense.
was that ball 4?
he swung at ball 6, 5 and 7
And Matsui chases three consecutive ball fours.
What the hell happened to the big innings?
YEAH Boston Yankee. Yeah Angels.
That will bite us later
kasey with another negative post. kasey when you walk down the street do you always walk on the shady side sulking
Boston Yankee-
isn’t 61* a great flick?
I like Roger, but the wacko side of me always identified with mick.
i love 61 another great movie by billy crystal
haha andy doesnt trust andy
That was a really bad AB by Matsui.
I love 61* – that is a great movie!
they’re pressing, cuz they lost three in a row and cuz of the tightness of the race. just think how upset we got, it hits them too.
Needed to break things open in that last half-inning… That really is going to come back to bite us in the ass.
kat- i saw that movie recently and comparing roger and barry is just comical. i mean a great guys, a family man… then barry bonds.
And finally we get Guillen out!!! I detest that guy…
flash and leiter need to stop reliving the glory days and do the game
Andy dealing. Keep it up Andy.
Speier rules!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I bet he doesnt walk
haha jj
nice pick Andy…
single, run, good D — but…the stats say he’s a bad player, so I guess he must be.
=)
I know its a little late but I wish we had andy for game 2 last year instead of the gutless one
I like Leiter and Flaherty. They can talk all they want.
Besides, the more words that come out of their mouths – the fewer words are spewed from Kay’s mouth.
Yeah, Matsui should have taken that 3-1 pitch instead of swinging. That was a freebie.
Does anybody else watching the game think Godzilla looks ill tonight? Looks to me like he could have the flu bug that Detroit benevolently brought into our house.
BIG BOY !!!!!!!!
Good to see Giambi swing at the 90mph meat.
ahhhhhha
guys seriously just drop that crap about being happy giambi is back HE IS SUCH A CANCER
_paramagnetic August 17th, 2007 at 6:32 pm
>> giambi is 6-10 off robertson
yeah. sure. whatever.
He’ll go 0-4 tonight. I’ve got money on it._
Looks like someone just lost some cabbage.
Yeah, won’t that be nice if the Tigers infect all the Yankees with the flu? We’d really start tanking games then…
Bad call putting Giambi into the lineup tonight.
Who was it that said Giambi wasn’t good for the team?
wolf: I WAS THINKING THE SAME THING! i didnt wanna say anything cause i didnt think anyone else would think so but yea he looks sick
gues big g isn’t going 0-4 tonight
I like Flaherty but I think Leiter isn’t entertaining and too often shows up unprepared. Give me O’Neill and Flaherty or Girardi and I’ll take that booth.
*bINO*
*bINO*
*bINO*
*bINO*
This like Game 7 of the 2003 ALCS, when we ‘Bino hit one to right center field.
>> giambi is 6-10 off robertson
>> yeah. sure. whatever.
He’ll go 0-4 tonight. I’ve got money on it.
I lost my bet. But that’s the beauty of betting against your own favorite team. It’s always a win-win.
Shields is getting in trouble in the bottom of the eighth.
Is mentorship a word?
Where are all those people who didn’t want Giambi to come back?
YankeeJosh — I agree with ya.
Boston Yankee, I agree completely – it was such a moving story, too.
horrible call vinny.
Well we have these guys
paramagnetic August 17th, 2007 at 6:32 pm
>> giambi is 6-10 off robertson
yeah. sure. whatever.
He’ll go 0-4 tonight. I’ve got money on it.
Gerry August 17th, 2007 at 7:11 pm
But then again, this is all my opinion and observation.
i think thats what youre referring to
K-Rod now in with the bases loaded and only one out…
The best booth right now is Singleton with Girardi or O’Neill
god dammit shields got into a jam
lets hope krod can et them out.
lugo at third, ellsb ury at second, coco at first and ortiz up. dammit guys doesnt look good. a gapper could score them all
Come on K-rod!! do your job!
Im still a huge fan of murcer
I bet Big Papi lays the beatdown on K-Rod…
Whoever said Giambi is a “cancer” needs to get their head examined.
ball bounces halfway between home and the mound. lugo scores. WORST PITCH EVER
“It’s definitely something that I’ll be thinking about,” Damon said. “They have a number of things to address during the offseason. We’ll just have to wait and see. I think they can pretty much pencil Melky in as the everyday center fielder for a number of years.”
Yup. I agree, thanks for the SO
It’s kind of ironic that Yankee fans are actually rooting for the Angels…it’s all relative, isn’t it?
IMO, the best booth is Singleton, Leiter, and O’Neill.
Really, any booth without Kay or Justice is a good thing.
GW: look i posted it up there.
tie game. ortiz at second
To me, O’Neill is pure entertainment. I love when he calls out Kay for his crappy calls. Girardi and Flaherty add the technical part of the analysis. Leiter imo adds very little.
Krod you suck!!
sox tied it up
I CALLED IT! Big Papi ties the game…
wow this is horrible if the sox win the gain a game. ortiz scores. sox go ahead
I forgot about Murcer, I love him too, he is the last link to the old WPIX days
The Angels just roll over and die when they face the Red Sox at Fenway. It’s pathetic.
chicago dave, those are things you dont want to be proud of
guys look up the sox may be up but gagne is warming up
sox up. and you know LAA will beat the yanks next week
Meh, as much as I would love for to happen. We arent going to win the division. Bostons pitching is too good and helps them avoid long losing streaks.
Wildcard is ours.
yea chicao dave you want to say that regretfully not proudly
has andy given up a single? he just gives up doubles
The Yankees have tremendous depth in young pitching in the minors.
That said Dan McCutchen has really making a statement this year and its getting hard to look past him, though he is older (25 – was drafted as a 5th yr senior last year).
He spent most of the year in A ball and put up outstanding numbers but because he was so much older than most players there you had to take his numbers with a grain of salt.
But since being promoted to AA, he’s thrown 4 of the best games any starter at Trenton has thrown the entire year. Given that the Trenton staff was one of the best in recent minor league history, that is saying something.
McCutchen’s line tonight:
7 IP 5H 0R 0BB 7K
In 4 games his combined line is:
23IP 16H 2 ER 5BB 23 K – ERA 0.78
A K:BB ratio of 23:5 isn’t bad. He has strong stuff – nice low to 90′s fastball and a great change. He’s not just a guy like a Clippard or Wright who may have marginal stuff.
He should be in the mix for a spot in the Scranton AAA staff next year. He knows how to pitch. I wonder if he could help them in the pen in the not so distant future.
Pete can’t stay away! He loves us too much! I guess he has a blackberry!
I hate KROD
Wow very strange, kept telling Jorge it was him who called time.
Well, I think a good call is a good call, period. So, I’m not apologizing for calling Big Papi’s hit before it happened… So there!
Bug flew in Jorge’s eye, thats why he called time.
Boston Yankee,
I wouldn’t be too surprised if Torre uses Giambi at first more if Phillips doesn’t hit well. Maybe once or twice a week as long as he’s healthy. He will need Giambi to be healthy if they get into the world series to play 1st. Just my opinion.
He will use Duncan and Betemit to spell the others and with certain alignments but Torre will bank on his proven players and use Phillips as a replacement late until Minky comes back in September, if he does. Torre will go with as much offense as he can once he gets into the playoffs and sacrifice some defense, especially at 1st. Damon is faster than Matsui in left and is about the same as a fielder. He still gets on base at a much better rate than Phillips does. So does Giambi. Torre needs as many on base as possible as often as possible.
how do you know jenny from the block?
no vinny that wasnt what i wrote i was quoting a clown who said that earlier. i go with the assurance that torre knows what hes doing and thats why he has the job. so i dont question his lineup choices
F-Rod is a nimrod…thanks for nuttin’, jerk !
what’s wrong with the Halos?
First, lackey, then shields, not krod. Ugh
If Andy can get through a couple more innings unscathed, we’ll definitely see Joba, don’t you think?
We love you Andy.., oh, yes we do..
refreshing to see pettitte step up and throw well when they really need to get a win. barring a complete meltdown, he’s given them all they can ask for tonight. mussina might want to take note.
Andy Is all pumped up tonight.
Wussina take some notes….
dr acula: lackey is something like 1-6 against boston with an era over 6.00 its no suprise he lost
whoah. looks like jj and i had similar thoughts.
Why can’t the Angels fold like this when we play us? You know, remain Clark Kent instead of turning into Superman (which they always freakin’ do when the see Yankee uniforms!).
OK, bad spelling in that last post. I meant “they”, of course!
the force is strong right now kasey
Chicago Dave: Some kids wear superman pajamas. Superman wears Shelley Duncan pajamas.
you said superman so i had to spit some science
Looks like Seattle is gonna pull ahead of the Angels for the West.
robertson is making jeter look terrible tonight. good lord.
Mo available tonight?
Mussina is great for throwing against teams in a slump or teams with impatient hitters. Other than that, he’s just kindling for the fire.
My guess is they’d want to get him another night off.
that advertisment they just ran: “HUMMER: like nothing else” – they may wanna rethink that wording.
even though, it’s true!
Jeter must be partying it up with Cano lately! HA!!!
Im calling an Abomb
Anyone want to give me the low down on the Sox comeback? I switch the channel back and they are winning. What happened?
But I don’t know whats worse, watching Krod do this or watching the stupid fist pump and arms toward the sky. THat irritates the hell outta me.
Come on, Alex, time for # 40 right here!
sweet deal Angels, sweet deal.
gagne talking back to the ump. Aybar on first one out
Gagne is gonna choke
Good steal or no? Do they walk Alex now?
Thanks a lot – Angels of Anaheim or whatever you call yourselves – hope you lose every game the rest of the season except when you play Boston, Detroit, Cleveland or Seattle -
GO NYR: Bases loaded all with fast guys. past ball runners advance. ortiz hits double
Bobby is such a speed demon…
YES!
Play some small ball
I guess Chone Figgins will get out, since he’s not facing the Yankees.
I hope
Steal third!!!
He’s throwing a ton of pitches.
great atbat no matter the outcome.
AYBAR TO THIRD!!!! CHONE TO FIRST!!!!!!!!!!!!1
Gagne is running out of air
GUYS GAGNE IS CHOKING
hip hip…….
Yeah, Jennifer, but I don’t think the Tigers would mind pulling Robertson.
damn it just foul!!! Figgins should steal second.
Runners at 1st and 3rd with one out for halos
Will he GAG again?
Hopefull OC gets back at the ole mates
Sorry i was talking about Gagme. I should have said that.
and my last post i first reffered to Jorge, than to the angels.
agreed jennifer. LETS GO ANGELS. thatd be a double whammy. down goes gange and sox lose. CABRERA HITS IT AYBAR HOME ANGELS TIE!!!
I can’t believe I’m rooting for the Angels…c’mon Orlando!!!!1
ouch! GAGne
gagne puked again!!!!
Thanks Gagne
GagMe blew another save!! thats what you get for talking about the world series in AUGUST!!
not that i’m complaining, but why didn’t the sux bring papelbon into the game? it was a save opp.
Gotta love it…Watching Gagne suck it up is just so very satisfying!!!
gagme
I’m MELTING
I’m MELTING
I wonder if Red Sox firing squad will allow gagne to have a final cigarette, cuz..
Papelbon pitched in the 1st game today.
this is a beautiful thing to watch live. and now vlads up COME ON VLADDY
He pitched in game one.
If Vlad ever got that one, it would have went a very long, long, long, long way
Love to see Vlad go yard on his ass right here…
ANGELS ON TOP BY 2!!! UP BY @ OC SCORES!
7-5 Anaheim
Can this team like knock Robertson out of this game, please?
His name is NOT Gagne. It is GagMe.
omg i wish you guys could see this fenway has shut up
Good lord, I almost feel bad for Gagne; then I think about the uniform he wears.
Yea good job Gagne!
Gagggggggggggggggggg-ne
can’t believe I am saying this
I LOVE VLAD!!
they’re leaving -buckner- gagne in and he’s at 30 pitches.
VLADDY
suck on that Sox Scum
Good job,Gagne!
thanks josh and jennifer.
i’m very torn. i’d love to see the sux lose. but i loathe watching k-rod hop up and down on the mound when he gets the win/save.
if only there was a way both teams could lose this game.
So, I must have missed it…When exactly did the Sox acquire Kyle Farnsworth?! HA!!! Love it…LOVE IT!!!
Gag-me strikes again!! thank you cashman
how often do you see that
Boston Yankee-
let us know how hard Gagne gets booed when he heads to the dugout
Buster Olney was right. Gagne has been a tremendous asset to the Yankees since he was traded.
that is the sheff I remember
I’m just back.
Wha I miss?
bad call but ill take it. there we are guys a bad call in the yanks favor!
nice two month rental he is turning out to be….
I must say that Gagne was a key acquisition for the Yankees
Wow Matsui snowconed that. Lucky!!!
rebecca: only gagne killing it look up for my emphatic posts lol
Gagne’s number is gonna look nice in monument park.
Now Andy be careful with Mags!
k rod DONT BLOW IT
Who was the idiot writer who said we should have traded Kennedy and Melky for Gagme? I wonder if he will deny it now.
You win some, ya lose some. I think Andy Ks that guy anyways.
Gagne blew it again? Bloody awesome!
And, from the score, looks like we might have a Joba sighting tonight?
I LOVE YOU ANDY
I take it back – thanks GAgne – hopefully a new definition of Game OVer!
What is Andy’s pitch count? I suspect Andy for at least one more, than Joba, and Viz?
did Francona call Torre on BP management ? He used Pap Smear in Game 1 with a 4 run lead in the 9th ? He is getting what he deserves with the arsonist Gagne
Wow!
Andy is only at 79 pitches.
Jennifer – Wasn’t that Steve Phillips (though he’s not a writer)?
rebecca i watched it live on nexn it was a thing of beauty. hahaha yuke just struck out on a blown call. hahaha foul ball they said he didnt foul it.!!!! this is brilliant. RETURN OF THE CURSE
I’m now tempted to get a Gagne jersey, though I did just purchase a ‘Got Rings’ shirt tonight. Totally feeling it.
Wow! I love Gagne! He is my favorite Yankee!
Francona used Papelbon with the tying run at the plate in the 8th. If he had taken him out in the ninth with the 4 run lead for Gagne, they have lost that one
A naice hit after a nice catch Matsui !!!
hahaha youk and francona are gone. youk almost bumped the ump
A nice hit after a nice catch Matsui !!!
Did anyone else notice on the light shot there was a person standing above the lights?
That reminds me of one of the games I went to in the begining of 2002, the top of the stadium was lined with cops with guns. Scared the living you know what out of me.
Ahh, Hideki…Why couldn’t you have done that when the bases were loaded earlier?!
jennifer -
it was steve phillips. and he was emphatic about it.
Whats going on in Boston, it says on field delay.
haha, rebecca, get one of those individualized blue yanks shirts and have gagne’s name and number put on it!!!
Tom…thanks for the clarification.
whoa.. why was francona ejected?
It wasn’t Steve that I heard saying it. Maybe John Heyman?
Rebecca-
thanks for the idea. i’m gonna make one up. yankee blue jersey, with the logo on front and GANGE on the back !
“Whats going on in Boston, it says on field delay.”
Peter Gammons just dropped dead in the press box.
Terry Francona ejected?
Wow, tonight is sweetly wonderful!
okay what happened in boston:
0-2 Youk swings fouls the ball. ump called it a swing. Youk argues terry argues with the firstbase ump firstbase upholds the call. terry keeps arguing gets thrown out. youk turns red and says the f word maybe 5 times gets thrown out. IT WAS BRILLIANT!
i take back the things i said about the angels.
phillips.
Yeah Phillips
Missed it completely.
Andy shutting me up. Good for him.
So, who, exactly said Andy Phillips can’t play ;P
also, it’s too bad andy phillips is so terrible. the yankees really need to find a 1B.
andy makes up for his earlier screw up
Youkilis is a HUGE crybaby. He’s always getting thrown out for arguing balls and strikes.
sox game over they lose.
Hey, we need to be paying more attention to our boys! Andy P. with the clutch double…NICE!!!
Yeah Andy!! makes up for the mistake. In the middle of 2 scorings.
there are TONS of bugs on the field!!
bless you KRod
soz loze!
soz loze!
SOX LOSE WOO HOO !!!!!!
Sux just got gagned
why is leyland playing the kid in left tonight?
actually whatever who cares about his crappy team
The best trade the Yankees never made was for Gagme.
I guess in a way we did trade for Gagne
lets remember that ian o’connor (from the bergen record i think) said that the yanks not getting gagne was not only wrong but that it signaled we were surrendering the season. even though it meant giving up melky or kennedy. will he write an article admitting how foolish he was? and for pete, why do some writers feel the need to write insanely strong opinions that they have no idea will be correct and make fools of themselves?
Damon still has no business starting for this baseball team. He has Tony Womack pop.
jeter will get a hit here
you have to sort of feel bad for that kid in left though…..can’t be a fun night for him
brandon webb my fantasy team thanks you
and andy has redeemed himself. i still dont think he is a major league level starter but he has paid off tonight.
Cameron Maybin his debut has been so wack
So bad they be wantin’ Craig Monroe back
Can’t wait to see Melky back out there instead of Damon.
Ian O’Connor was wrong there – but he’s a pretty good columnist. If you get a chance check out his book “The Jump” – it chronicles Telfair’s last season in HS when he made the leap. ESPN ripped right off him with their special on Bassy.
so sue me
Nice inning all around – yanks score two runs, gagne blows the save, youk and francona get ejected – life is good.
dr. acula, if you get that shirt made, you have to take pictures and send them to us!
guys gagne is a perfect example of karma the sox dont need gagne. they took him to screw with the yanks. their cup runeth over. they lose. KARMA
I cant believe we had to root for the Angels
I think both writers did to be emailed to ask them if they stand behind their statements.
so all in all we make up no ground on the sox. we lost yesterday they lost today we win today they won today. if we do win knock on wood
al – i agree he is mostly a pretty good columnist. i am more bothered in general by the fact that writers and talk hosts feel the need to make these radical snap judgements. if he just said we made the wrong move by not getting gagne, fine. but to say we surrendered is stupid. and who the hell would play center if we dealt melky? im just bothered in general
Jose Reyes is gonna steal 80 bases this year. I think it would be cool to have a guy like that
Ron,
Damon, with sporatic playing time is batting .333 with a .372 OBP and a .410 SLG for August. Not too shabby for someone who shouldn’t be playing. He takes a lot of pitches, walks a lot and does what he has to.
Is anyone warming up in the bullpen right now?
Agreed helno, To say we gave up and the soxs locked up the division is ridiculous.
BRING IN JOBA
for the save i mean of course leave andy in
damon has been playing better but overall melky is still much better. offensively he is at least as good if not better and defensively its not even close
No, no need to. Still has low pitch count, and isn’t in trouble. Let me finsh at least the 7th.
Who the hell is Ryan Raburn anyway?
let Andy give the pan a night off. it may sound greedy but if you dont need to use Joba, dont use him
whats the pitch count?
the white sox are such a dead team
You also don’t want him sitting too many days, now that he is a reliever.
Dave- I dont know, but he is killin us
hehe
I think maybe Joba for eight and nine? Maybe just nine? Petitte’s pitching a gem!
jennifer: i know i didnt mean right now
andys era is slowly becoming respectable
Andy is really doing it tonight…Man, did we need a performance like this to stop the bleeding! I agree, I’d love to see him go the whole way.
Andy’s at about 91. Not bad after 7.
91. Now do you just go to the pen? Or let Joba finish the last 2 innings? or let Andy try to get thru another?
if andy can go 8 and we are up 4 i try to use someone else to close it out. save joba for tomorrow and that hopefully gives mo another day off
you put andy out there for 8 – no question
tigers are swinging stupid too…..so Andy might be able to cruise through next inning
guys did you know only the bottom of the order has actually scored? thats comforting. shes a deep team i like that
Agreed Helno – unfortuately ESPN has turned the sports world into an “Analyze Now” society. Nobody waits or has patients. You need to make a blunt statement now or you have no credibility – that’s what they’ve turned columnists into – pretty much scribes that are in talk radio.
I always like the columnists and talk show hosts (Dan Patrick) that try to show perspective and stay away from the prevailing zeitgeist of making “i’m right you’re wrong” statements.
On another thought – Damon needs to be moved down in the order… a potent lineup with a .255 hitter leading off… I’d rather see Abreu hit 1st, and Cano 3rd.
Abreu has Damon’s speed, more pop, and walks more. His power isnt’ what it used to be – he actually would be a terrific leadoff hitter for this lineup
Andy in the 8th, Viz in the 9th. I’d save Joba for when we really need some firepower and immediate stoppage.
I say let Andy try and get 8, then bring Joba in for the 9th. He needs the work, and it’d be nice to give Viz a night off.
jennifer- That may be true, but Joba comes wit ha strict set of rules. Using him tonight when it is not necessary eliminates him for tomorrow, when he could be vital to a win. But, you dont want him to get too rusty. Its pretty much a lose-lose situation. This is why they have me wondering about how long these “Joba rules” will be so strict for. He is a starter and throws 100 pitches per start. Im not thinking throwing him on back to back days is gonna absolutely blast his arm. I guess it is best to be cautious, though
Well, the Tigers left Robertson out there for 109 pitches. I think Andy could go that far as well…
i agree andy out for eight. if no more score put in anyone but farns but maybe edwar? idk
Enoch,
http://yesnetwork.prospero.com.....;tid=17681
guess more people feel the same way i do.
JOBA TIME BABY!!!!!!
Give Andy one more and give Viz the 9th.
so the general belief is either viz or joba. i hate tim kurjhins voice it is horrible. hes ugly and has a bad voice how do these guys get into television?!
seattle is winning obviously
For the record – the Twins and Yankees will dominate the AL for the next 5 years… Hughes, Joba, Wang v. Santana, Liriano, Garza
gerry, thats a non inteligent argument
They are looking to limit is innings as well. they only want him to pitch something like 25 innings. So by them saying if he pitches two innings he needs two days off, that is a way to keep down the innings. I don’t know how many inning he pitched last year, but it wasn’t many. they don’t want a big jump. Plus they really think this kid is a diamond. they don’t want to damage him.
Btw there was a great article on Joba in newsday. My uncle a mets fan called me at work and told me to read it. brought tears to my eyes.
Stef

Andy in the 8th, Viz in the 9th. I’d save Joba for when we really need some firepower and immediate stoppage.
-I mean, how awesome that we have this in our bullpen? Hope he can keep it up
Petitte going for eight. I like this. And I will like it a heck of a lot more if we have a Joba ninth
Gerry- That homerun is gonna mke us lose?
swing santana over to the yanks side
Whats Andy’s pitch count?
gerry just admit defeat. your argument is stupid
If he has a nice inning, get him the CG
Come on, nobody else here wants to see Andy go for a CG?!!
The guy said Giambi makes us loose. Not lose. Go back and read again.
94
91 at end of 7th
OK, GO NYR…at least that’s one more vote for a CG!
Nate,
I must admit, I get a real thrill out of watching Joba pitch. I’ve replayed his innings several times on MLB.com. There’s just something about him that draws you in — and it’s not just his speedy fastball or nasty slider. He’s a keeper.
Pitch count too high to go for cg. I’d let him go to 115. Than bring a reliever in. He’s done his job already.
I don’t mind seeing a CG, I’ve just been Joba less for so long, y’know?
im just glad they got Andy some runs……hes over earned and lost too many games on support alone
chicago dave: everyone wants a cg but do you really think he can?
Whenever I go to the stadium next I have to get a Joba the Hut t-shirt!!
He keeps pitching like this, he can.
Hmm Viz is standing but not throwing. Andy just at 101. If he gets him out early. Maybe they will let him start the 9th.
Andy Pettitte is one guy that is not in need of being coddled. I went to the game against Toronto where they tied it on the balk. I think he was clsoe to 120 pitches through 7 innings. He labored like crazy. It was a very tough game. I think this has been a relatively easy 100+ pitches. He can easily finish this one off and our pen could use a day off
Ah, Rebecca, I relate to your Joba-longing.
I’m trying to sacrifice, though, for the sake of the team’s success in the long run.
Well, Fernando Vina just pronounced on “Baseball Tonight” that Gag-Me will “get it together and be fine,” so I guess Sox fans now have nothing to worry about. Man, I can’t believe the chumps they get to work on ESPN!!!
Potential top 9 matchup Joba v Sheffield
Vizcaino has worked a lot lately and pitched last night. I’d hope Torre avoids him. Use Joba or Edwar in the 9th if you need a reliever.
104 hes done. thanks andy that was just what we needed. you rock
How many pitches for Andy ? Not more than 100.
He could finish the game out if Torre would let him.
Andy can definitely go CG tonight…I believe in him 100%!!!
So Gagme will get it together and be fine. but Mo has a rough week and he’s done?
I heard on the radio that Gagme wasn’t doing so well before he was traded.
good job Pet
No Joba. Save him for tomorrow.
Andy proved once again he´s a big game pitcher. We really needed a good start and win tonight and Pettitte´s just been outstanding. It´s great to have him back where he belongs.
Stef: I know, it’s just, it’s soooo hard!
Vina said Gagne will get it together? He looked like he absolutely nothing. He has a low 90s fastball and his offspeed stuff is OK if he gets it over. RSN is already gunning for his head. The Gagne situation could get very ugly
YankeeJosh, Yeah, should probably rest Vizzie. I’d forgotten Viz had pitched last night.
If not Andy for the 9th, then Farns or Edwar. I might let Andy start the 9th, though, and let him stay until someone gets on base.
Let Andy finish it. PLEASE
OK, is Andy definitely done? If so, that’s a shame. I would have given him 120 to try to finish the game.
chicago dave i just saw that to but i just realized watching baseball tonight and the yanks at the same time isnt smart i was convinced andy just struck out jacque jones lol
Well I guess Andy is done. Joba warming, and the rule is Joba up Joba in.
i like the use of joba. dont play around
If he’s warming, Joba MUST come in. That’s one of the Joba’s rules.
Kind of a waste, I’d say.
Yep, Vina is a Gag-Me believer, alright. Then again, Vina is a complete idiot…
I don’t even know what team Jaque Jones plays for!
who leaked the joba rules?
let the job pitch……only good can come
I love Joba, too, but to use him now is a waste…
GIAMBINO!
Theres Giambi making us lose AGAIN
Hopefully he will blow the ball by Sheff, and we can watch his stupid swing.
Wow that was a bomb by Jason.
A 2 fer for Giambi tonight WOO HOO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BIGBOY REDUX
Stef,
If Viz hadn’t pitched yesterday I’d have agreed. There was no reason for him to be pitching last night but he pitched and we have to live with it.
Joba’s had 4 days off. Getting an inning to keep him sharp is okay. We don’t know that we’ll need him tomorrow. Plus you know Torre, he loves to screw Fox.
wow what a shot. id sit joba now
We need to start ripping on Jeter. No one rips on him on this blog – but everyone else gets crucified. (Sarcasm)
Rebecca-
Jones plays for the Cubbies!
BIGGG GGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
why waste joba?
is torre that silly? now is the time for farnsworth or villone.
who’s the guy that bet he’d go 0-4…..I’ll pay your debt if you keep on bettin against him…lol
GO YANKEES!!
He hasn’t pitched in 4 days. You have to give him work at some point.
It looks like Jeter is hurt.
Did you see a replay? Guy that caught it? Wearing a Giambi shirt.
giambi you a re a cancer and have no offense and clearly make us lose. hahaha SHELLEY.
When Shelley wakes up in the morning he pisses excellence
I hope Andy is lobbying Joe to let him go out there for the ninth…
Man, that was a Ron Hassey shot!
No, now is the time to let Pettitte finish the game
3 for Phillips tonight too !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He was due too !!!
PUT IN KYLE
Didn’t Jeter twist his ankle in yesterday game?
putting joba in is giving him the feel of closing the game with training wheels on because of the score. Not a bad way to give him some 9th experience
Jeter should be rested tomorrow. Betemit can fill in for him…
can someone tell me wby the cws suck so badly
replace damon with cabrera and this ought to be your lineup most nights. i’m really tired of watching damon poke the ball into left-center and trot back to the dugout. maybe next year he’ll be the spark they need but, this year, he ought to be a late-inning pinch-hitter or pinch-runner.
It’s a waste to use Joba now. Should have let Andy finish the game out. This will come back to bite them unless the rules suddenly change.
JJ — nice description “closing a game with training wheels on”!
jennifer- Im not even talking about that. He just doesnt look like his lower body is strong. I think it is more than a twisted ankle but that could also be a factor
OK, now Joba is in I hope he embarasses the crap out of Sheffield…
damon won’t be here next year. Bank it, he’ll ask to be traded since he sees that he won’t be playing cf with Melky here.
Joba hasn’t even pitched to a batter yet and they’re already chanting his name!
JOBA!!!!! The stadium is bouncing!!!!
This should be some match up
This should be some match up
okay guys.. i’ll eat my words and shove my fist in my mouth. Of course I bash Giambi before the game and in between home runs and he has a great game. go figure.
Anyway, I’ll bash him tomorrow again around 11:30 and hopefully we’ll get another 2HR game.
Who cares what I say. Not like getting people to believe my argument is gonna make changes on the team. Its a place to vent frustration.
Good Game!
Come on JOBA!!! Get him out!!
One pitch one out!! HAHA SHeff BOOOOOO
Really though…Giambi or Damon… why is there any debate…
Power vs. Power!!
i say jobaa gives up two tonight. id love for him to prove me wrong
TY stef
g’night sheff
One pitch, one out
Boston Yankee – The White Sox have been flat all year. Their starters have been disappointing and their bullpen, which was supposed to be lights-out, has been a disaster. Moreover, their big hitters have either been injured or underperforming.
Amazing how Sheffield got around on that fastball. I give him props.
I wonder if Sheff can figure out why they are booing him. In his stupid head, it is probably that we are racist and the worst fans in baseball.
gerry you better bash him tomorrow
I’m with kasey, I don’t want to see Damon start anymore.
Giambi should be in the lineup every night, but that should be obvious by now.
So Joba comes in with a 5-run lead, big deal. He warmed up for a 4-run lead, and that’s nearly a save based on the arbitrary rules. He’s also facing the meat of the order.
I hope Edwar gets some work soon.
lol chicago dave i know why they suck it was rhetorical but i appreciate the explanation anyway
Let’s get a DP and end it!
don’t half as bash him gerry….I want full giambi hatred tomorrow
give us a k COME ON KKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK
It is pouring by me. I am 10 miles from the stadium. They gotta get this done NOW!!
Boston Yankee – OK, sorry about that…Guess I was preaching to the chorus! Since I’m stuck here in Chicago, and get to watch nothing but Sox and Cubs games, I thought I’d try to be helpful…
Joba is awesome. What a great game.
WOW
BIG J
The Yankees win!!!!
now we are back to 5 out.
ITS A DIRTY JOBA BUT SOMEONES GOTTA DO IT
Joba the Heat does not disappoint.
Joba >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> everyone else, except Shelley, because, well, Shelley >> Universe
That’s a huge win to stop the losing streak!! Just what we needed!!
OK, he only threw 10 pitches…He should be available tomorrow (despite “The Joba Rules”), right?!
90 mph slider…..You are kidding me.
chicago dave i didnt know the pen was supposed to be good so i learned something so it wasnt a waste. NO IT WASNT IN VAIN!
Gotta love the Joba man!
Only a few sliders. If he would have thrown a slider to sheffield, it would have been very funny
Wow. I credit Torre for using Joba today. We just learned a heck of a lot more about him. Those were four very good hitters and he only gave up a weak hit to the guy leading the league in hitting.
Great exclamation point on that win!
huge win by yanks huge loss by sox.
okay goodnight everyone thanks for playing along. ill see you all tomorrow
90 mph slider! THAT IS NUTS!!
Andy did a helluva job as stopper tonight. They needed a big performance from him and he was AWESOME!
So six innings into his major league career, the kid has the stadium on their feet chanting his name.
Can anyone remember this happening before? I genuinely can’t.
No, Dave.
He’s getting the day off, which didn’t make sense to burn him tonight with a 5-run lead.
Rivera should be available tomorrow with Viz and Edwar. Joba only went one and can pitch Sunday. Not bad.
Yes, much love (and mad props) to Joba!!! (Still would have liked to see Andy get the CG, but whatever…)
Now to take the next two would be nice. Let’s hope we can.
Night all.
Andy didn’t think Jorge had a play, saw the runner in front of him.
If Torre won’t use Farnsworth for one inning with a five run lead, why is he even on the team?
*is immediately yelled at by Pete for making a slight question of Joe Torre’s bullpen management*
Dave- I would have gotten Andy the CG also
Maybe we should go back to the beginning of the night of the night and look at the comments….
So since Giambi came back, the Yanks have cooled off. This guy is a cancer to the team as a whole. – Gerry
My favorite!!!
This was a game that went just the way you would draw it up, a terrific performance by Pettitte to rest the bullpen, and then Joba comes in to end it. Andy, please come back next year!!!!!
Unfortunately, I’m guessing if they won’t depart from “The Joba Rules,” then the Yanks might be compelled to use Farnsworth tomorrow night. Still, I’ll just keep my fingers crossed and hope for a vintage performance from Clemens…so we won’t need the ‘pen too much!
Jennifer -
Maybe you can explain to Michael Kay why Joe used Joba in the 9th. Flaherty and Leiter couldn’t do it.
Kay kept yammering about “you’ve got a bullet in your gun”
Meanwhile, Joba hadn’t pitched in 4 days. He sure looked pretty sharp to me
Why are you leaving “Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named harold) ” after only 135 plus comments.
How will we make it without you.
Maybe you’ll see them get away from the Joba rules in Sept. But I don’t think it will happen in Aug.
Is Joba the next Paplebon or better? Is he going to start next year or what? One thing I do know, is that he is pretty damn good!
Joba was warming up with a 4-run lead. I bet one of the lesser known Joba Rules is that when you warm up Joba, you put him into the game.
I am beginning to agree about Giambi…being a cancer and all, but I honestly I think the bats had to cool down at some point. Coincidence that they cooled down when Giambi came back, I don’t know…
Dave -
Farnsworth has looked much better lately – had a couple of 1-2-3 innings, AND has kept the ball down consistently
He’s definitely not been consistent, but he can get into a groove where he’s unhittable for a few weeks
Joba could be a truly great closer, and we could certainly use an heir to Mariano’s thrown. Still, we also need a bona fide ace/stopper on our starting staff, and I think Joba has more dominating stuff than Hughes…So, it’s a really tough call.
Dont forget about the great job by Andy. We really needed it and he gave a big time performance.
Scooter – Unfortunately, I saw Farnsworth blow way too many games for the Cubs to have any faith in him now. Still, the Yanks are going to have to use him some more during this stretch run, so I hope you’re right and he does get into a good groove…
It is going to be a really tough call about Jaba. Is he going to like Righetti?
it really was awesome to see the entire stadium on their feet, chanting “jo-ba” clap clap!! How electric it was there… i wonder what the kid must be thinking!
Joba should be a starter. I want 200 IP from him instead of 50-60 IP.
It’s a no-brainer.
Viper – If only we could have Joba pitch EVERY inning for the Yankees!
Who is going to replace Mariano?
I would love to see Jaba throw 200 innings as well. Do we have anyone remotely close to being able to close in the future? It is going to be a big time decison. Gagne will more than likely be available! He sucks! GO YANKS!
Posada said the throw was offline and that Phillips made the right call by cutting off that throw. Torre said Abreu was supposed to be backing up 2nd. (Waldman reporting)
26 Rings–
Worry about that when we come to it.
I personally am torn. Joba would no doubt be an effective starter, but in the ‘pen, he’s lights out.
I like not being able to decide.
Maybe Humberto Sanchez could be the next closer.
None of this matters now anyways because Joba is in the rotation next season and Mo will be resigned for at least another two years.
I think it is safe to say Hughes was throwing harder than 90 yesterday. The Stadium gun had Joba at 100 and the YES gun had him at 94. They shouldnt use a radar gun (YES) if it doesnt work correctly
No doubt he is dominant…….Jaba Rules!
Although I would love to see Joba every other day (the more, the better), a great starter is huge for a club. Can we find another closer to effectively replace Mo? Who knows?
Joba has such a terrific mental makeup. He seems to be perfect for that spot, doesn’t he?
Andy Pettitte game us an incredible game tonight!!!! Joba was the icing!! Thanks, Andy!!!!!
Pettitte was huge once again for the Yanks. This is the difference from last year. After a rough stretch there is a stopper that can end a losing streak. Really a great night for the Yankees, the offense was clicking, Andy was dealing and the Yanks get a much needed win.
Isn’t Humberto Sanchez supposed to take over for Rivera after he has his surgery and gets better? I thought that was what I heard
Gagme helps us out again….after we get our ring this year, The Boss needs to send that guy a 10K Bonus !
Why is everyone blaming Giambi for these past three losses when all three revolved around certain pitchers (Karstens, Mo and Moose) all sucking?
I don’t get it.
I guess he’s to blame for Global warming too?
Why do we need to keep talking about a mo replacement? I mean – he isn’t retiring. He isn’t hurt. The way his body is built, why couldn’t he pitch for us for 3 more seasons?
Viper true…Joba will be in the rotation. Which is even more exciting to think about after the way he seems to blow through these major league hitters. Wouldn’t it be something if turns out that Joba is the future #1 starter and Hughes is #2…whatever…still a couple of years away.
Actually, the offense was pretty good the last game as well… 5 runs with a quality start will usually win a game. Moose and the pen was just not so good. Otherwise – it may have well have been a 5-3 or 5-4 win. And if Mo was on the day before, who knows if we could have one that last game as well against the O’s. No worries.
Stacey….you are right…the idea that it was the offense that went in the tank for the past three games is wrong…those loses were on the pitching…for some reason, people want to kill Giambi and offense for the past week…who knows.
This is Beautiful…..
GagMe since with the BoSux…
7 Appearances, 6 innings pitched
10 ER, 14 H, 3 Walks, 1 BLSV, ERA 15.00
I LOVE BRIAN CASHMAN…NICE !
Turns out the Yankees actually did trade for Gagne at the deadline
The Cash Man always delivers!
Joba’s numbers:
IP 5
H 2
R 0
HR 0
BB 2
SO 9
*WHIP .60*
How unreal is that?
Clemens needs to give us a big outing tomorrow to guarantee at least a series split.
Those are numbers from before Jobas appearance tonight
I thought I adjusted them for tonight?
Richar of the Pale Hose hit his first homerun tonight. It’s one he’ll never forget. Grand Slam. Seattle up 5-4.
What inning?
I like the match-up tomorrow…Clemens vs Durbin…looks like a few runs might be scored. Hopefully that will be a game the Yankees control early. Maybe Joe thinks that too. Could be the reason he used Joba tonight. The match-up on Sunday will be a little closer (Bonderman vs Wang) and I think he wants to be able to have Joba available in case the game is close. I think that’s why Torre used Joba tonight, so he could be used again on Sunday.
Did they just changed the schedule so that Seattle plays Chisox every game now till end of season?
T7 for Richar GS
Bottom of the 7th. 2 outs, Contreras on the mound (as a converted reliever!)
Winning the next 2 games and being only 3 games out of the division lead by midnight Sunday….awesome…finishing on an absolute TEAR through the end of the month, sitting at 80-55 when all is said & done on 8/31/07 and having the division lead all to ourselves….PRICELESS !!!
I think Contreras started this game…didn’t he?
Yes, Jonathon, he did start. I remember him doing an inning of relief in another game and got my wires crossed. My bad.
Contreras started the game as there are teams who are interested in him. This is a showcase for him, basically.
HE WAS demoted/promoted to the bullpen before this and pitched a few innings of relief.
That’s right, Marius. I remembered something about that. He was o.k. about it, but said he would be a starter next year.
Runner on third for the White Sox in the bottom of the ninth with two outs.
Re Giambi and his overall effect, he’s apparently the opposite of cancer. Quite extensive reporting last year on the whole Arod situation revealed a true leader in the clubhouse to be Giambi. This was NY Times columnist George Vecsey’s conclusion, saying in effect ‘the clubhouse leader in Oakland was reborn in New York.’ Vecsey didn’t ignore Giambi’s other character traits calling him “pigpen personified,” but there’s quite a bit of evidence that he’s no Gary Sheffield.
3-1 count on Josh Fields
Why do there have to be two outs?!
Josh Fields walked. Two on, two outs for the White Sox with Cintron at bat.
and two strikes
Mariners won.
err, make that three.
The White Sox are a complete joke. Why in the world with Paul Konerko on the bench does Ozzie elect to allow Cintron to hit with 2 outs and a chance to win the game. Just unbelieveable.
Stupid Seattle.
Is it time to admit that Seattle is not going away?
They’ll be in a free fall by Labor Day…..Remember their schedule Rebecca, it’s the most difficult in all of MLB down the wire……
I’m banking on that run differential theory. Also looking at the w-l ratio of their starters.
Juts keep winning, Yanks!
