Game 123: Tigers at Yankees

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Aug 18, 2007 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Here is the lineup:

YANKEES
Cabrera CF
Jeter SS
Abreu RF
Rodriguez 3B
Matsui LF
Posada C
Giambi DH
Cano 2B
Phillips 1B
Clemens RHP (4-5, 4.00)

Pregame chatter: The Yankees are facing RHP Chad Durbin (7-5, 4.68). … This will be the first game for Clemens since Aug. 7 when he dealt out some justice in Toronto and got suspended for it. … Jose Tabata’s season is over as he needs surgery on his right wrist. He went .307/.371/.392 for Class A Tampa.

Thanks to Brian Heyman for calling in the lineup.

jason.jpgUPDATE, 6:03 p.m.: Came inside to catch an inning. The Yankees will take two runs over six innings from Roger Clemens every time, even if he does give up 10 hits.

I would assume the bullpen plan is Krazy Kyle, the Viz and Mo for 7-8-9.

Big hits by Robbie Cano and Andy Phillips there. Yes, Andy Phillips.

(Here is my nephew climbing the swingset in the Favre jersey we got him in Green Bay last fall).

Wilson Betemit kills RHP and again he rots on the bench.

Tabata will have a HanBone removed from his wrist he will be back for winter ball it really isn’t a big deal he’s out for the season especially w/ a month left.

  2. Rebecca August 18th, 2007 at 1:27 pm

Good to see Leche’s back in the line up, and Phillips certainly earned his spot today with the way he hit last night. Same with Giambi.

Hope Tabata’s injury isn’t too severe, and hope that Clemens pitches like he did on the seventh

  3. Global Warming August 18th, 2007 at 1:30 pm

    Tabatas stock is going going……..

That wrist has really been a thorn on his side.

As for Clemens, we’ll know real early if the old man is rejuvenated by the time off or extremely rusty from it.

  4. E-ROC August 18th, 2007 at 1:32 pm

Jose Tabata’s injuries keep piling up. Hopefully, he can have a smooth recovery.

    Go Clemens!

  5. Brandon August 18th, 2007 at 1:36 pm

Tabata’s stock has been dropping at all, he still had 5 HRS w/ 54 RBIs & 15 SB he also has been batting at a .307 AVG w/ a broken wrist. He will be killing AA next season. He’s still an untouchable

  7. Brandon August 18th, 2007 at 1:43 pm

    …..anyway ^^^

Jose Tabata also has been a very clutch hitter this season, RISP (.341/.423/.813) & 46 RBIs, stock down is not what’s happening at all heck Texas was asking for him this season Cashman said no.

KEEP AN EYE ON: Austin “Action” Jackson his stock has risen incredibly this season

  8. hmmm August 18th, 2007 at 1:44 pm

    “Tabatas stock is going going……..”

    i don’t think so.

he hit .307/.371/.392 as an 18 year old in one of the most pitching friendly environments in baseball. and the whole time he had an injured hamate bone.

he’s still an awesome prospect. he will have it removed and start raking next year.

i know you weren’t the guy, but this comment is similar to the guy calling a Hughes a #3-4 starter after 26 major league innings.

“—Every year Rivera goes into a swoon, and every year people say it’s because he’s finished.” from previous thread.

One of these days it will happen as he is getting older. No one can pitch forever great.

  12. Yankee Boy August 18th, 2007 at 2:11 pm

This year Tabata continnued to demonstrate excellent plate discipline and controlled the strike zone, made contact, and put up a great average. This is especially impressive when you consider his age relative to the levels he was playing at.

The only downside was lack of power and it was unclear if this was because of his shorter build, age, or a recurring wrist-area problem. Removing the hamate bone should eliminate the last concern.

At worst he’s Bobby Abreau with a little less speed and also less fear of going to the wall. At best he’s Manny Ramirez without the mental issues.

Why would anyone be down about that?

  13. neil August 18th, 2007 at 2:12 pm

Any updates on Damon’s progress at 1B? I’m suprised Posada’s playing today. I thought Molina would start today and Wang with Posada tomorrow. Is it just me or does wang do bad with Molina? I would’ve thought Shelly gets the start at 1B today, with Phillips playing tomorrow with Wang on the Mound. Phillips def. earned today’s start though.

  14. Go NYR August 18th, 2007 at 2:13 pm

BBfan- Yes, one of these days he is gonna lose it, but he is not just gonna wake up and lose it. It will be more of slow and steady decline.

  15. stuart August 18th, 2007 at 2:19 pm

tabata and jackson are untouchable and have huge upsides.. newsflash the yankee corner outfielders are getting old…

jackson and tabata will be at AA next yr. and hopefully they will shine.

Betemit does kill righties but Phillips hits righties well and Giambi is pounding the ball. Don’t worry Betemit will get some AB’s

  16. E-ROC August 18th, 2007 at 2:21 pm

The days of Rivera going two innings should be over, especially with Joba and Viz serving as the bridge.

  17. mel August 18th, 2007 at 2:21 pm

    SJ,

Where are you? We need you to settle the Tabata argument.

Re: Mariano. Guys look at his game logs. Baltimore has his number. When other teams have his number, then there will be cause for concern. Your memories are so short. Struck out the heart of Toronto’s lineup. With some heat.

  18. hmmm August 18th, 2007 at 2:22 pm

“Is it just me or does wang do bad with Molina?”

no. he’s done fine with Molina, and Posada started his last 2 sub-par outings.

i wish it were that simple, but that’s not what’s wrong with Wang.

  19. mel August 18th, 2007 at 2:25 pm

Mussina did well with Molina, I wouldn’t mind seeing that again.

  20. nate c. August 18th, 2007 at 2:27 pm

No Damon again…must be weird for him. First time in 9 years he won’t make over 140 starts

Here’s a great piece from Tyler in today’s times about Damon:

  21. This Year August 18th, 2007 at 2:27 pm

Pete, I have been trying to find out about Tabata for a long time. Can you provide more detail as to long term prognosis? The Yankees lied about it for a long time, saying it was a biceps issue, so at least they have come clean. I would really appreciate anything more you can dig up. Thanks.

  22. raymondmagnetic August 18th, 2007 at 2:29 pm

I think Tabata will be fine once his wrist heals. From what I hear he always makes solid contact and has a pretty decent idea of the strike zone and that’s what matters most. Also he is only 18. 18!

  23. Joan in Cheshire August 18th, 2007 at 2:33 pm

I can hear Johnny Damon weeping all the way up here in CT.

  24. mel August 18th, 2007 at 2:39 pm

Did you guys read the part where Johnny said that Melky will be in center for a number of years? That was pretty much his concession speech. Are we really stuck with Giambi for one more year? Ah, shucks. lol.

  25. Brandon August 18th, 2007 at 2:44 pm

Giambi has one more yr. then I boot him as hard as anyone has been booted before.

  26. randy l August 18th, 2007 at 2:44 pm

“i wish it were that simple, but that’s not what’s wrong with Wang.”
what is wrong with wang? fingernail? messing around with too many new pitches?
the yankees need him to get back to the pitcher he was.pronto.

  27. mel August 18th, 2007 at 2:51 pm

    Brandon,

Do you remember when everyone called Giambi an idiot for his remarks? Then he looked like a lame duck because Selig had him cornered? He doesn’t look like either one now. He’s basically got immunity for any past transgressions. Brilliant really. lol. And all along, I thought it was just a Jack Daniels moment when he made those quotes.

I’m excited for the day we get to boot giambi – i think of him as the pinnacle of dumb signings. even when he hits 2 home runs in a game i feel like we’re only a few days away from another slump.
some day, my memories of him will mostly be of him sitting on the bench with his ALWAYS soaking wet hair, leaning on his knees…man what a dope

  30. Brandon August 18th, 2007 at 2:59 pm

I remember Mel it’s all a bunch of BS being supported by Bud Selig, seriously Selig has to be the worst owner in sports yes even above Vince McMahon . He actually allowed Giambi to cry himself into a slap on the wrist, Giambi calls him out and we all know Jason did steroids & now I have to hear how because of his genorosity that he gets off scot free, man Brian Cashman had to be pissed hearing that, there is no way, put it this way if the Yankees could terminate his contract today and not have to pay a dime, they would. Selig w/ his Jason has donated 50,ooo to charity my butt, how many athletes don’t do that, you know what Jason did , he told you, called you out and the owners, FOR HIS FULL COOPERATION SELIG SAID (and we all know what Jason did not to get suspended he named names to the investigator, it’s just not going to be reported now.)

  31. Bob Michaels August 18th, 2007 at 2:59 pm

In Tabata`s case, who needs a hamate bone anyway.

  32. Bob Michaels August 18th, 2007 at 3:01 pm

Giambi could be on a roll with Taters, they usually come in bunches.

  33. Global Warming August 18th, 2007 at 3:06 pm

I’d be more eager to keep Giambi than Johnny ” Many teams are interested in me” Damon.

  34. Bob Michaels August 18th, 2007 at 3:06 pm

Let`s settle the steroid issue. If you did it acknowledge it, if you continue to deny it and get caught with the excuse ah, it`s only flaxseed oil or it`s just a cream, then you should pay the consequences. It`s the latest in Baseball Quiz shows Truth or Consequences.

  35. SJ44 August 18th, 2007 at 3:07 pm

Jose Tabata’s stock is not going down at all. In fact, its going up.

He played all year with a bad wrist and still was very productive, as the youngest everyday player in the FSL.

Its not a serious injury. Six weeks and he is good to go.

Where exactly would you play Betemit today? Giambi is hot as hell and Phillips had 3 hits last night and is a better defensive player.

Betemit is what he is, a bench player.

Everyone complained about Giambi being in the lineup last night. How did that work out?

If Giambi gets hot, this lineup is unstoppable.

  36. Bob Michaels August 18th, 2007 at 3:08 pm

Does anyone know, if Mussina has a buyout in his 08 contract?

  37. SJ44 August 18th, 2007 at 3:11 pm

No, he does not. He signed a straight up, two year contract for the 2007 and 2008 seasons.

He is also a 10 and 5 guy. Which means, he cannot be traded without his permission.

  38. mel August 18th, 2007 at 3:11 pm

    Thanks, SJ.

So what’s your opinion about Mo? Washed up? August swoon?

  39. Global Warming August 18th, 2007 at 3:11 pm

“Does anyone know, if Mussina has a buyout in his 08 contract?”

    No he doesn’t.

  40. mel August 18th, 2007 at 3:15 pm

How does Moose feel about Baltimore? Maybe we can trade him there for Markakis. lol.

  41. SJ44 August 18th, 2007 at 3:19 pm

    Mel,

lol. If Mariano was washed up (which he isn’t), I would never say it.

As he said, he’s human. Folks always overreact when he has a couple of rough outings.

  42. Oti August 18th, 2007 at 3:20 pm

Can anyone confirm whether games that fall under the Fox blackout (and thus unavailable live on MLB TV) are available later on MLB TV? I’m debating whether to wait until after the game to watch it, but if it won’t even be available later I will just listen to it on the radio. Any information is appreciated. Thanks!

  43. kasey August 18th, 2007 at 3:22 pm

    1. molina and posada aren’t wang’s problem. wang’s problem is his control and command. he hasn’t been able to consistently put the ball where he wants/needs to in weeks. it’s catching up to him.

    2. shame that damon won’t make 140 starts. i’ll try and hold back the tears. you earn playing time. he hasn’t. period.

As far as I know Saturday morning blackouts are available in totality in the afternoon. Night games are also available.

Are you getting the Yankee game or Cardinal game on FOX?

You might want to try sopcast for any games, esp. Sat. a.m. ones. http://www.myp2p.eu/MLB.htm

I am pleased to hear that Zambrano resigned with the Cubs so that we don’t even feel tempted to bid on that head case, fruit basket.

Giambi, even with two homers yesterday, is a roid monkey and nothing more. The only way he can earn even .05 % of my respect is if he performs in a World Series for the Yankees and they win it.

Where exactly would you play Betemit today? Giambi is hot as hell and Phillips had 3 hits last night and is a better defensive player.

Betemit is what he is, a bench player.*

Betemit can play 1B I don’t understand how you lay claim of Andy hitting when Betemit has done better than him in his short time as a starter. Andy is a defensive replacement at best he hasn’t hit for his weight in this lineup especially in his last 40 ABs vs RHP I’d put Betemit at 1B and no he is not a bench player a guy w/ 30 HR 90 – 100 RBI potential is not a bench guy.

  52. Rebecca August 18th, 2007 at 3:40 pm

Brandon: Phillips earned his start tonight after what he did last night. If it’s a close game, and he’s not hitting, you can put Betemit or Duncan in.

Nice to have those choices, isn’t it?

  53. Brandon August 18th, 2007 at 3:41 pm

….oh and the double last night wasn’t good hitting by Andy it was BAAAAAAAAAAAAD fielding by Camron Maybin who should not be in the ML right now

  54. raymondmagnetic August 18th, 2007 at 3:42 pm

I agree Maybin shouldn’t be in the bigs right now, he looks like he’s going to strike out about 100 times between now and the end of the year.

the yankees need him to get back to the pitcher he was.pronto.”

i wish i had that answer.

i think it’s a combination of the 2 things you mentioned. probably more the nail.

  56. SJ44 August 18th, 2007 at 3:51 pm

Wilson Betemit has had chances to be an everyday player and couldn’t get it done in Atlanta and LA.

The Dodgers are desperate for a bat. If they saw him as an everyday player, he would still be there.

He isn’t a 30/100 guy. Never has been, never will be.

Don’t take a small sample size of stats and play them out for a full season. Some guys can’t duplicate success over 600+ AB’s. He’s the ideal bench guy and he is not a starting first baseman on this team. I’d put Giambi at first before Betemit.

Its like people calling for Chamberlain to replace Rivera and using 5 inning sample sizes as proof. It makes no sense.

Its funny how Phillips hits are graded on degree of difficulty. Last I checked, hits are hits. He got 3 of them last night. That doesn’t warrant a spot on the bench today.

Betemit can’t play first base. Have you seen him out there so far? His footwork is a nightmare. He is a work in progress at first base. Perhaps next year, after a full year of winter ball at first, he will be a first baseman. Right now, he is what he is. A very good utility player.

There is nothing wrong with the lineup. The lineup is just fine.

Wang? All I know is, I saw his finger firsthand in Tampa. Honestly, I don’t know how he can pitch with it. Its gross.

I have no doubt its effecting his sinker. I don’t see how it can’t. Its not in good shape. He’s just fighting through it.

I’m pretty sure that Damon sits around his apartment at night wearing a Red Sox uniform and a circa 2004 fake beard, slugging vodka and throwing darts at a picture of Scott Boras.

All for a couple more dollars that he’ll never, ever spend.

I think the Rocket’s going to give us a good outing today.

  62. TKinDC August 18th, 2007 at 4:00 pm

Two things – - – I think that Torre has surprised everyone with the restraint he has shown with Mo. I can only remember a few appearances of more than 1 inning and each seemed like a good call. With Farnsworth being such a bum this year that had to be difficult for Joe to watch.

As for Betemit, I think its a little early in his career to be certain whether he is a bench player or the real deal at age 25. He has done a nice job so far and is a big upgrade over the previous options.

    GO YANKS!

    liftoffffff

  64. Ron August 18th, 2007 at 4:02 pm

    Sheffield owns Rocket.

And Betemit is a better player now than Phillips will ever be. That said, considering that he had three hits last night, I don’t mind him playing today. I just hope Torre’s not still thinking about those three hits next week.

  65. Brandon August 18th, 2007 at 4:03 pm

SJ44 in LAD they never used him right after 3 for 4 nights w/ 2 HR or 3 for 5 nights, they would bench him days after , and then bring him back as a PH in other games. I gurantee his bat will do the talking and you’ll be rethinking what you said. He was acquired to produce 30 HR and 100 RBI in the future , He is not a bench guy, Bobby Cox even said that in Atlanta. Betemit & the 2 Jones carried that team, when he was traded it was because Atlanta knew their season was over w/ Brian Jordan going on the DL & Chipper Jones. (The NL was lost LAD offered prospects Atlanta wanted it knowing the season was over)

  73. SJ44 August 18th, 2007 at 4:10 pm

Don’t get me wrong, I think Betemit is a very nice addition to the team.

I also know that Phillips is not an everyday player. You kind of ride out his hot steaks and make sure his glove is in the game in the late innings.

I just don’t think you mess with what’s working. The good thing is, they at least have options now at first when Phillips cools off.

  89. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 18th, 2007 at 4:21 pm

matty believe it or not the tennis hall of fame is in the united states and yea a lot of people like tennis. you have to have a lot of respect for tennis players “chief”

  90. Matty August 18th, 2007 at 4:21 pm

Boston Yankee, you didn’t include Rachel. It should be this:

Boston Yankee (Fire Sterling, Kay, Waldman, McCarver, Buck, Morgan, Gammons)

It’s funny that Gammons lives in Boston, considering how he always leans to the left now.

  91. Brandon August 18th, 2007 at 4:22 pm

    Roger is dealing today

  92. Rebecca August 18th, 2007 at 4:22 pm

4 Ks in 2 innings. Vintage.

  93. Matty August 18th, 2007 at 4:22 pm

    Boston:

I was joking. You have to be a good athlete, but interest in Tennis in the United States is in a severe decline.

  94. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 18th, 2007 at 4:25 pm

rachel nichols doesnt do it for me it looks like she spends all her day tweezing her eyebrows and putting on makeup. anyone who spends more than 30 straight minutes looking at themselves in the mirror has issues. and peter gammons is fine by me.

  95. Matty August 18th, 2007 at 4:26 pm

You know, ESPN has finally put together a decent Monday Night Football crew. All they have to do is correct their baseball PBP guys and we’ll have something going.

  104. Rebecca August 18th, 2007 at 4:30 pm

Matty: They did, but the Brewers lost, too. The only team really winning recently’s been St. Louis.

and I’ll take a few more defensive plays like that from the Tigers, thank you!

  147. CB August 18th, 2007 at 4:55 pm

That was a great play by Clemens but it was probably Posada who called it.

That was most likely why he went to the mound.

    Give the catcher some credit!

Also, that play was set up by Rocket “not focusing” on the hitter and throwing over to first/ faking to third.

Maybin maybe one of the fastest players in all of professional baseball. Posada and Clemens sold it perfectly.

  148. Wolf In Pinstripes August 18th, 2007 at 4:55 pm

  162. Rebecca August 18th, 2007 at 5:09 pm

    too late.

  163. CB August 18th, 2007 at 5:11 pm

    Dontfirecash,

I’m still cautious on Whelan, but very optimistic. Since Nardi worked on his mechanics (and he had that one awful first start) he’s been dominant.

If that light bulb has gone off for him and he’s “gotten it” with his mechanics it wouldn’t surprise me if he got a midseason call up next year. He has major league stuff, there’s not a lot of question on that.

If he comes through, the Sheffield trade is going to look tremendous for the Yankees. I’m hopeful for Sanchez. He’s got a ton of talent and his velocity may be better after TJ. He’s so large I was always surprised that Sanchez sat at 92-94 last year.

  164. BX 12 Fordham Road August 18th, 2007 at 5:11 pm

  166. Yanksmitch August 18th, 2007 at 5:13 pm

Clemens got out of that inning pretty cheaply, but his pitch count is getting high. Too bad Torre didn’t wait one more day to bring in Joba the Shutout, we could probably use him today.

People will come Ray, people will most definitely come.

  185. SJ44 August 18th, 2007 at 5:28 pm

Three straight innings the leadoff guy reaches, two of them score. Only a great DP prevented the third player from scoring.

Beaten by a #9 hitter again. They are hitting .345 against Yankee pitching this year. Not good. Its been the bane of this pitching staff all season.

Clemens has needed too many pitches to get out of the last three innings. Its taken a toll.

With the offense dead again (6 of the first 12 outs on first pitches), they can’t afford to give up anymore runs.

Starting pitching, with the exception of Pettitte has really let them down this week. It has to get better.

Hitting comes and goes. However, if the starters can’t give them innings and quality on a more consistent basis, they are going to have trouble winning games the rest of the way.

Let’s hope for better approaches at the plate the rest of the way. The way they have attacked a VERY average pitcher reminds me of the April-June Yankees and not the team that has lead the majors in every offensive catagory the last two months.

  186. Brandon August 18th, 2007 at 5:29 pm

we need an offensive inning this inning. Roger needs to breathe

  187. Rebecca August 18th, 2007 at 5:29 pm

GAH! The Yankees need to stop getting out…

  188. CB August 18th, 2007 at 5:30 pm

Cameron Maybin is the reason why the Yankees need to be worried about Tigers.

We tend to obsesses about the Red Sox but over the next 5 or so years it may be the Tigers who are the chief obstacle to the Yankees winning the world series.

Dombrowski may be the best GM in all of baseball and when he sees talent he gets it.

In the 2005 draft Maybin should have been the first or at worst the second player taken. He fell to #6 becasue of “signability” and Dombrowski jumped all over him.

He’s done that every year since 2004 when he got Verlander.

Despite not drafting very highly, the Tigers may have gotten the first or second most talented player in every draft since 2004.

They are not going to go away.

Meanwhile, the game is going to come down to the bullpens. I have a feeling its going to be on Edwar to pull this through.

  189. Brandon August 18th, 2007 at 5:30 pm

    why Andy why !!!!!!!!!

  190. Yanksmitch August 18th, 2007 at 5:31 pm

Ug. At this rate Durbin will throw a complete game.

  191. Ron August 18th, 2007 at 5:31 pm

Utterly pathetic. Do these guys even realize they are in a pennant race? Torre especially? And what is Phillips doing?

  192. Rebecca August 18th, 2007 at 5:31 pm

Okay, these 1-2-3 innings, when we’re not pitching, are beginning to really upset me. We have a better offense than that…

  193. Milwaukee August 18th, 2007 at 5:32 pm

A 5 pitch 5th inning? Is this team even trying? I can’t believe Roger isn’t getting run support again.

  194. Brandon August 18th, 2007 at 5:32 pm

I still want to know what the hell that bunt is about !!!

  195. harsha August 18th, 2007 at 5:33 pm

who the **** is chad durbin anyway!?

  196. SJ44 August 18th, 2007 at 5:33 pm

5 pitch inning. So much for patience.

The April/May Yankees are back offensively. The pitching really has to pick it up now because this offense is a little too in love with themselves and have decided to go back to hacking at everything.

Saw signs of it in the Orioles series. Its been in full bloom in this series. Not good.

Just puts more pressure on a very average starting pitching staff to be great. Not going to be easy if this team doesn’t change its approach at the plate.

  197. corsari August 18th, 2007 at 5:34 pm

Durbin is really throwing well today. 64 pitches through 5 against the Yankees, wow. We really have to get something going soon, right now we´re not even making him work.

  198. Rob August 18th, 2007 at 5:34 pm

5 pitches by Durbin that inning.

  199. Mike NYY August 18th, 2007 at 5:34 pm

    Ugh, I hate the Tigers

  200. Quan August 18th, 2007 at 5:34 pm

The clock should be ticking on Andy P’s playing time. Betemit or Giambi should be playing 1st. Torre is on record as saying Betemit’s too heavy so that probably means he doesn’t like him and that’ll be his excuse for not playing him.

  201. harsha August 18th, 2007 at 5:34 pm

i wish we’d just take some pitches!

  202. Brandon August 18th, 2007 at 5:36 pm

Joe for the love of god I know it looks good right now but get someone up in the BP, Roger is still feeling the 4th inning, P.S. PH Betemit for Andy Philips next time.

  203. TKinDC August 18th, 2007 at 5:36 pm

    CB -

Fortunately, the Motor City Kitties alone can’t do us in! I don’t think that the Tribe or the Mariners are going to be able to keep up with us, especially with our September schedule.

I can’t fault the Rocket for his effort today. I just hope our pen can keep up the good work. We are a bloop and a blast away from winning this game!

  204. CB August 18th, 2007 at 5:38 pm

You can see it already – if the yankee offense tails off it’s going to all get dumped on Andy Phillips / Torre.

Phillips isn’t an everyday player. That said, if this team doesn’t score with the amount of talent at every spot on the line up its because of a systematic failure of performance by this group of players.

It’s not on Torre and its not all on Phillips. Unless they commit to playing Giambia at first everyday, first base isn’t going to be the be all and end all of the yankee offense.

  205. Yanksmitch August 18th, 2007 at 5:39 pm

Giambi will not play much 1st, and should not– he’s a defensive liability and coming off an injured foot. Phillips and Betemit are great when they’re hot, but we can’t expect either of them to always contribute much in the way of offense. Phillips is the better firstbasemen as well- I think Betemit has only played the position twice in his career.

But it really shouldn’t matter who plays first as long as the rest of the lineup plays to their potential. The Yanks have plenty of offense to carry a defensive firstbasemen, they just aren’t getting the job done tonight.

  206. harsha August 18th, 2007 at 5:39 pm

We are a bloop and a blast away from winning this game!

    Definately! keep the faith!

  207. Joe August 18th, 2007 at 5:40 pm

Ruppert Jones on the screen. I just had a flashback. Remember when he used to tape up his forearms?

  208. CB August 18th, 2007 at 5:40 pm

    TKinDC,

Good point and I also am skeptical of those other two teams (although Seattle may just be having one of those years).

I was more referring to the near term future with the Tigers. They are building a very formidable team based on unique talents, especially pitching.

  209. Ron August 18th, 2007 at 5:40 pm

This is the bottom line: Betemit takes walks and hits for power. Phillips jumps at pitches early in the count and hits singles.

His defensive value does not make up for the fact that Betemit has a much better bat.

    Ugh, Alex…

  210. Brandon August 18th, 2007 at 5:41 pm

CB I have no problem w/ Philips but doing a bunt after a Roger had a long inning is inexcusable.

Alex not now man Roger needs to get out this inning otherwise the Arod snipers will come out the closet tonight

  211. wesson August 18th, 2007 at 5:42 pm

i guess the “hot streak” is officially over now, huh?

  212. Ron August 18th, 2007 at 5:43 pm

Roger, get out of this. Now.

  213. TKinDC August 18th, 2007 at 5:43 pm

Wow – the team leads the league in every offensive stat since the all-star break and folks are ticked because the best strikeout pitcher in the AL (bedard) and Verlander, who throws smoke have given them a hard time!

The Offense will be fine, thankfully we don’t have Zumaya in the pen coming at us

  214. Brandon August 18th, 2007 at 5:43 pm

    Joe bring in Edwar now

  216. Ron August 18th, 2007 at 5:45 pm

Roger, is it too much to ask to get ONE OUT?

  217. Rebecca August 18th, 2007 at 5:45 pm

Seems to enjoy loading the bases today, doesn’t he?

  218. Joe August 18th, 2007 at 5:45 pm

  219. Joe August 18th, 2007 at 5:46 pm

    “I’m behind on 7 alimony’s, and I’m wearing paper bags for shoes”!@

  225. SJ44 August 18th, 2007 at 5:48 pm

The offense isn’t dead because of Andy Phillips. Arod has gotten himself out each of his AB’s, Jeter hasn’t hit anything hard the entire homestand, and they are hitting under .200 w/RISP this week.

If the Yankees need Andy Phillps to hit, they might as well go home now. He isn’t the reason the offense has stalled.

Clemens was so so today. His guts kept this a 2-1 game. But, too many pitches, too many tough innings. Some of that is a tribute to the Tigers.

Overall, a decent 6 inning start. But, with the offense dead, they unfortunately needed a great start. Which, it wasn’t today.

  226. Brandon August 18th, 2007 at 5:51 pm

good job Jetes working the pitch count BH

  227. Rebecca August 18th, 2007 at 5:51 pm

Lead off single. Let’s make sure we bring him ’round to score, ok?

  228. Ron August 18th, 2007 at 5:51 pm

There’s a start. This is where those Red Sox fans watching on Gameday get their hearts broken.

  229. J-Dawg August 18th, 2007 at 5:52 pm

There you go, Jeet! Come on Bobby!!

  230. Brandon August 18th, 2007 at 5:53 pm

Farnsy warming up to motivate our offense I guess

  231. Ron August 18th, 2007 at 5:53 pm

That cannot possibly be Farnsworth. Even Torre isn’t that stupid.

  232. Rebecca August 18th, 2007 at 5:54 pm

I’m with Brandon. It’s the only reason you get Farnsie up in a game this close!

  233. harsha August 18th, 2007 at 5:54 pm

get this smith guy outta here, hes a punk

  234. Brandon August 18th, 2007 at 5:56 pm

  235. Rebecca August 18th, 2007 at 5:56 pm

    BOBBY!!!

I dunno how the hell that stayed fair, but I’ll take it!

  236. kasey August 18th, 2007 at 5:56 pm

  238. TKinDC August 18th, 2007 at 5:57 pm

    Nice job Bobito!!!

  239. harsha August 18th, 2007 at 5:57 pm

  240. J-Dawg August 18th, 2007 at 5:57 pm

I happen to like our offense just fine!!!!!!!!!

  241. Michael August 18th, 2007 at 5:57 pm

Now that is how professional hitter’s like Jeter and Abreu roll! Deep counts and working the pitcher into a mistake.

  242. Brandon August 18th, 2007 at 5:58 pm

oh boy Durbins in trouble now !!!

  243. Michael August 18th, 2007 at 5:58 pm

    A Farnsy rally!

  244. Rebecca August 18th, 2007 at 5:58 pm

Arod swings at ball four and gets a base hit.

    I’ll take it.

  245. rbizzler August 18th, 2007 at 5:59 pm

    Bobby just Cadillacin’.

Nice piece of hitting, even if he didn’t think that he got it.

  246. migames (fire everyone each time the yankees dont win) August 18th, 2007 at 5:59 pm

farnsy, lets see if he gagme

  247. J-Dawg August 18th, 2007 at 6:00 pm

Warming up Farnsworth works like magic every time!!!!

  248. kasey August 18th, 2007 at 6:00 pm

“The offense isn’t dead because of Andy Phillips. Arod has gotten himself out each of his AB’s, Jeter hasn’t hit anything hard the entire homestand, and they are hitting under .200 w/RISP this week.”

a-rod’s not the only one. matsui’s swinging at terrible pitches and pulling off the ball again, which is usually a sign that he’s headed towards a slump. lotta guys swinging at ball 4. it’s like they got so used to scoring runs, they’re itching to swing and get hits, rather than just get on base and keep the line moving. it’s too bad. too often you see this team of veterans look antsy and move away from the game plan that’s worked for them 90% of the time they implemented it.

great that abreu homered and now durbin’s out of the game, but still a lot of guys in the lineup looking off-balance at the plate the last few games.

  249. Rebecca August 18th, 2007 at 6:00 pm

    migames: Nice name!

  250. TKinDC August 18th, 2007 at 6:00 pm

    SJ -

You’re post above is exactly right. Relying on Andy Phillips for production is like getting on Melky’s case for not hitting 30 HR’s.

Cashman put together a team that doesn’t need a 1B to be a basher. Just make the defense better (especially when Wanger is on the hill) and contribute.

  251. harsha August 18th, 2007 at 6:00 pm

time to maul the bullpen! lets go yanks!

  252. Ron August 18th, 2007 at 6:01 pm

Okay, Joe, you can sit Farnsworth down and get up Edwar. I mean, you can’t seriously be considering letting him pitch.

  253. SJ44 August 18th, 2007 at 6:02 pm

Farnsworth in the 7th? Hmmm, gutsy move.

Two ways of looking at it. One, what in the world are you thinking? Two, if he can get the job done, maybe it helps him turn the corner.

He has pitched better of late. Albeit, in “soft landing” situations.

At some point, you gotta put him out there and see what he can do in an important situation. If not, then its a waste having him on the roster.

I’m no Farnsworth fan. But, man, if this guy can pitch 10 decent innings the rest of the way (one being today, if they use him), it helps the bullpen.

Saying this as I am running for the Sambuca to numb myself for his inning of work!

  254. Michael August 18th, 2007 at 6:02 pm

    kasey-

agree with you, especially MAtsui. Lets see what he does here. Terrible AB yesterday with the bases loaded that cost us a potentiel put away big inning.

  255. Boston Dave August 18th, 2007 at 6:04 pm

I’m a little surprised everyone is so down on Giambi. If the Yanks didn’t have such a logjam with the bench, Giambi would be viewed as a great part of the lineup as the DH. The Yanks knew what they were getting when they signed him years ago, a great hitter who would be tolerable in the field for a few years and then a DH.

As for Damon, as long as he can accept playing 120 games a year, he is still a very good hitter. The reason the Yankees lineup is so great is their ability to see alot of pitches and wear down pitchers and then get on base. Damon fits that mold. I honestly think if he can accept a lesser role, it will pay dividends in the long run because he’s battled small injuries all season and that trend will likely continue if he has to play everyday.

    just my two cents.

  256. Michael August 18th, 2007 at 6:04 pm

I guess it is foing to be Farsnworth. I like going to Edwar better, with a much different look from Roger who was throwing mostly fastballs. More of the same from Farns. But, somehow I feel he is going to come through. And I am generally pretty solid with these hunches.

  257. Rebecca August 18th, 2007 at 6:05 pm

Matsui should have been a bit more patient. A one run lead is probably not the best situation to bring Farnsie in, but Torre’s mind works in weird ways.

  258. Ron August 18th, 2007 at 6:05 pm

What has Damon done this year to demonstrate he is a good hitter? He’s upped his walk rate, which has been the only, and I mean ONLY saving grace of this season. He has absolutely no power.

  259. Viper August 18th, 2007 at 6:05 pm

I’m not a Torre basher at all, but I was very much against using Joba last night in a meaningless spot.

The 7th inning would have been a perfect slot for him and now they’re going to take a chance on Farnsworth.

  260. Brandon August 18th, 2007 at 6:07 pm

    YEH BABY !!!!

JOE SIT DOWN FARNSY HE DID HIS JOB ALREADY !!!!

  261. Rebecca August 18th, 2007 at 6:07 pm

Good thing it was Arod going to second on that, not Posada. Otherwise there’d be two out right now.

  262. KAJ...says...80-55 on 8/31/07 August 18th, 2007 at 6:07 pm

    hip hip !!

  263. Michael August 18th, 2007 at 6:09 pm

Awful 2-0 hack for Giambi. I also had a hunch we was goona stroke one so much for that.

  264. Viper August 18th, 2007 at 6:09 pm

_What has Damon done this year to demonstrate he is a good hitter? He’s upped his walk rate, which has been the only, and I mean ONLY saving grace of this season. He has absolutely no power._

Uh, that guy with no power hit 24 homeruns last season.

Not quite A-Rod power, but you can’t say he has no power.

  265. Brandon August 18th, 2007 at 6:10 pm

YEH ROBI …GOOD BASERUNNING ALEX !!

  266. Rebecca August 18th, 2007 at 6:10 pm

    Cano coming up clutch!

  267. TKinDC August 18th, 2007 at 6:10 pm

I thought A-Rod was dead there. Apparently Maybin is a 4 tool player!!!

  268. Boston Dave August 18th, 2007 at 6:11 pm

Ron, Damon’s been hurt most of the year. do you think Ortiz has lost his power forever too? I will give Damon the benefit of the doubt because he still makes pitchers work and he doesn’t look completely lost at the plate. the hits will come. he has never been a power hitter… i know he hit some last season but that is not the norm.

  269. Michael August 18th, 2007 at 6:11 pm

Great approach by Robby and great baserunning by Alex. For such a talented guy, he does the little things very well too.

  270. Ron August 18th, 2007 at 6:12 pm

Damon has been healthy for over and month, and except for a few groundball singles, he’s been the same player. Damon cannot play for this team if he can’t get his SLG higher than his OBP. Not when he’s also incapable of playing center.

  271. Ron August 18th, 2007 at 6:12 pm

    Pinch-hit Betemit here!

  272. Chag August 18th, 2007 at 6:12 pm

Funny how quickly we start hitting once Farnsy starts warming up, we got a pattern going here.

  273. Brandon August 18th, 2007 at 6:12 pm

ok everybody follow a line here just copy and paste

    “Rally Farnsy”

    I’ll start

  274. YankeeJosh August 18th, 2007 at 6:13 pm

    Viper,

I am usually very tough on Torre’s bullpen management. However, I had no problem with using Joba last night. He hadn’t pitched in 3 or 4 days and he needed to get an inning to not get stale. You had no way of knowing that he’d be needed this game. As it turns out, it’s the perfect game to get him in, no one could have known that.

I guess Edwar is only good enough to pitch in the 6th inning or when the team is losing. I really would rather see him in the 7th instead of Farnsworth, then Viz in the 8th and Mo in the 9th if he is available,

  275. Brandon August 18th, 2007 at 6:13 pm

    “Rally Farnsy”

  276. Boston Dave August 18th, 2007 at 6:14 pm

Durbin didn’t look very good today so I was a little surprised they didnt get to him sooner… still can’t believe Detroit didn’t get any bullpen help at the break. Todd Jones is awful.

  277. Michael August 18th, 2007 at 6:15 pm

Phillips shoould prevail in this battle of AAAA players.

  278. Rebecca August 18th, 2007 at 6:15 pm

    Rally Farnsy

  279. YankeeJosh August 18th, 2007 at 6:16 pm

    Good call Michael.

  280. Brandon August 18th, 2007 at 6:16 pm

    Rally Farnsy

  281. Ron August 18th, 2007 at 6:16 pm

On second thought, Andy’s the master of the badly-hit clutch single.

  282. harsha August 18th, 2007 at 6:16 pm

maybe now you guys will get off of phillips’ back

  283. TimBX August 18th, 2007 at 6:17 pm

    Rally Farnsy!

  284. kasey August 18th, 2007 at 6:17 pm

man, i wish betemit were playing today. right? shoulda been in there yesterday, shoulda been in there today. andy phillips is terrible.

speaking of terrible, i don’t know who you go to besides farnsworth for the 7th. maybe edwar, but it looks like we’re going to see the yankees version of gagne out there. not a snowball’s chance he has an easy inning. expect vizcaino at some point in the 7th.

  285. Boston Dave August 18th, 2007 at 6:17 pm

Ron, over a month? really? wow… did you give up on Mariano in April too? give me a break. he can still hit, he will hit, and there was no secret about his arm in center when he was signed so that isnt an argument. i suppose you thought Arod would tank this year as well. i’ll give the benefit of the doubt when it’s due and not jump to quick decisions.

  286. Ron August 18th, 2007 at 6:17 pm

Phillips hit a pop-up. Betemit should still be starting.

  287. Rebecca August 18th, 2007 at 6:17 pm

Well, if andy Phillips is coming up clutch, you know something’s going right…

  288. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 18th, 2007 at 6:18 pm

    rally farnsy

  289. Boston Dave August 18th, 2007 at 6:18 pm

farnsworth has been a little better. i still dont trust him, but i guess you have to give him a chance and keep the finger on the trigger in case he gets in trouble.

  290. Rebecca August 18th, 2007 at 6:19 pm

Too bad Leche struck out, but we got the inning we needed.

Now, to put up a goose egg for detroit…

  291. Ron August 18th, 2007 at 6:19 pm

Get up Edwar. He’ll be needed.

  292. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 18th, 2007 at 6:20 pm

hahah petes nephew looks exactly like him

  293. Michael August 18th, 2007 at 6:20 pm

AP does have a knack for the clutch jam shot/blleder/flair/well-placed grounder. There is a word for that. Luck.

  294. Chag August 18th, 2007 at 6:20 pm

    HOLD Farnsy, HOLD! (Fingers crossed)

  295. YankeeJosh August 18th, 2007 at 6:21 pm

    Ron,

Knowing Torre, if Farns gets in trouble it’ll be Vizcaino for 1+. I’d be shocked if we saw Edwar today unless the bullpen before him implodes.

  296. Rebecca August 18th, 2007 at 6:21 pm

Oh man. If Torre’s wrong about this…

  297. Boston Dave August 18th, 2007 at 6:21 pm

boston yankee… i hear ya. espn is especially unbearable. i’d add buster olney to that list of keepers.

  298. SJ44 August 18th, 2007 at 6:21 pm

Luis Gonzalez says its the results that count.

If folks are going to “grade” the quality of Phillips hits, it shows more of an “Anti-Phillips bent than just having a baseball discussion.

All I know is, two clutch hits for 3 RBI the last two games. I’ll take that anytime.

Now, the fun starts. Kyle for the 7th. Let’s hope he can get the job done.

  299. CB August 18th, 2007 at 6:21 pm

I’m generally a Torre supporter but I just don’t see bringing Farnsworth in here at all unless the plan is Farnsworth in the 7th, Edwar in the 8th and the Viz in the ninth.

This is a good spot to bring Edwar in with a lead in an important game.

  300. Brandon August 18th, 2007 at 6:22 pm

please Joe get K-Ram up as an incase

  301. Boston Dave August 18th, 2007 at 6:22 pm

whats the over/under on farnsworth walks this inning? 2?

  302. TKinDC August 18th, 2007 at 6:22 pm

Wasn’t Detroit rumored to be interested in Farnsy before the trading deadline?

Please Krazy – prove the right (or wrong?)

    :)

  303. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 18th, 2007 at 6:23 pm

boston dave where do you hail from?

  304. TKinDC August 18th, 2007 at 6:24 pm

Its gotta be 7/8 = Viz, 9=Mo. Right?

  305. YankeeJosh August 18th, 2007 at 6:24 pm

    CB,

I agree with you. I really hope to be proven wrong and to see Edwar in this game.

  306. CB August 18th, 2007 at 6:24 pm

For all the people discounting Phillips hit -

What did you guys think of Jeter’s “game winning single” in extra innings this week?

Or for that matter do you guys put an asterisk next to the world series championship the diamondbacks won because every lousy hit they got off Mo was just that kind of dunker?

    That is baseball.

  307. Boston Dave August 18th, 2007 at 6:24 pm

    Waltham… you?

  308. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 18th, 2007 at 6:25 pm

i hear sean casey is the nicest guy in baseball. BUT DONT WALK HIM!

  309. Ron August 18th, 2007 at 6:25 pm

CB, the thing about dinky singles is that they aren’t nearly as indicative of positive future performance as say, well-hit balls.

  310. Brandon August 18th, 2007 at 6:25 pm

oh man these are some straight ass fastballs

  311. YankeeJosh August 18th, 2007 at 6:25 pm

Vizcaino loses effectiveness in a second inning. I’d hope he’s exclusively for the 8th (or 9th) today.

  312. Rebecca August 18th, 2007 at 6:26 pm

    One out. Two to go…

  313. Viper August 18th, 2007 at 6:26 pm

_However, I had no problem with using Joba last night. He hadn’t pitched in 3 or 4 days and he needed to get an inning to not get stale. You had no way of knowing that he’d be needed this game. As it turns out, it’s the perfect game to get him in, no one could have known that._

I know Joba hadn’t pitched. I’m just as aware of that as anyone.

However, it would be different if he didn’t have the “Joba rules where he cannot pitch the next day (or two days if he throws 2 innings). You don’t burn a guy that you are limited in using in a slot where they are leading by 4-5 runs.

It wouldn’t be a big deal if Joba didn’t have the strict rules place on him (which I do believe is the right approach), but he was used in a meaningless slot last night and you’ve got Gagne-Farns on the hill to protect the lead instead.

  314. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 18th, 2007 at 6:26 pm

Farnsworth is thinking wow… i didnt do bad did i? hahah oh wait they arent booing me

    Upper-Deck Dinger coming here.

  316. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 18th, 2007 at 6:27 pm

    What are they cheering?

  317. TKinDC August 18th, 2007 at 6:27 pm

Farnsy vs. Sheff = CLASH OF THE NIMRODS

  318. Ron August 18th, 2007 at 6:27 pm

    That was mildly awesome.

  319. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 18th, 2007 at 6:27 pm

for once farnsworth isnt the bad guy this is great. that must be a long walk back for sheffield

  320. Rebecca August 18th, 2007 at 6:28 pm

    Two out…

    One out from quasi-redemption?

  321. Boston Dave August 18th, 2007 at 6:28 pm

Ron, just curious… are you even a Yankees fan, or just generally a pessimist? Phillips might not be a .300 hitter but he’s done his job and played good D. not bad for a bottom of the order hitter.

    that’s it kyle!

  322. PBL August 18th, 2007 at 6:28 pm

farnsworths stock just went up a little bit

  323. Chag August 18th, 2007 at 6:28 pm

Way to go Farns…but you still fall below the line.

  324. Michael August 18th, 2007 at 6:28 pm

Looking good so far on my Farnsy call. I like how he reeled off 3 str8 strikes on Casey with a full count. And blowing away Sheff gives him one free pass in my book.

  325. Brandon August 18th, 2007 at 6:29 pm

pick up that trade value BABY !!!!!!

  326. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 18th, 2007 at 6:29 pm

  327. Boston Dave August 18th, 2007 at 6:29 pm

i know auburndale… take the bus through there sometimes to get to boston for work.

can you imagine if farnsworth actually has a decent august/september?

    ya baby!

  328. Rebecca August 18th, 2007 at 6:29 pm

    Wow.

I expect to see the four horsemen at any moment right now…

  329. Michael August 18th, 2007 at 6:29 pm

    Bob Marley time. Redemption Song!

  330. Brandon August 18th, 2007 at 6:30 pm

    BANG !!!!!

  331. YankeeJosh August 18th, 2007 at 6:30 pm

    Viper,

Where do you draw the line though? What if today had been a blow out? Or the Yanks were losing tomorrow. Eventually you can make excuses not to pitch him and suddenly he’s got too much time off. We saw earlier in the year what sporadic work did to Rivera. It could effect a less experienced reliever like Joba worse.

Joba went 1 inning yesterday and is available tomorrow. Vizcaino, Mo, Edwar and yes, even Farnsworth are well rested for today. I can’t kill Torre for that.

  332. This just in ...... August 18th, 2007 at 6:30 pm

    Farnsworth’s head is on straight.

  333. Josh August 18th, 2007 at 6:31 pm

I’ll give Farnsworth props for that performance. If he can repeat that a few times he will find himself back in the good graces of New York.

  334. J-Dawg August 18th, 2007 at 6:31 pm

Great job Farnsy!!! (I never thought I’d type that).

  335. hh August 18th, 2007 at 6:31 pm

about time Kyle…that was outstanding. I think he made a few friends by striking out Gary with the high heat

  336. SJ44 August 18th, 2007 at 6:31 pm

Like I have been saying all week, the Yankees are going to need Kyle Farnsworth down the stretch.

It doesn’t matter how he treats the media (sorry, Pete, hopefully, he is cool with you) or how he has pitched all year.

Its how he pitches the next 6 weeks. If he can pitch like this, against the three guys he faced, he can help this team.

That was some impressive inning for him. Let’s hope he can build on it.

  337. Quan August 18th, 2007 at 6:31 pm

I think the presence of Joba has spurred Farnsworth on. He’s been pitching pretty well pretty much since the kid arrived. Maybe all of the Joba hype got hiscompetitive juices flowing.

  338. AsmosEyes August 18th, 2007 at 6:31 pm

My opinion of Kyle Farnsworth just went up to -35. Be a long time before he gets to even zero, but that was a step in the right direction.

  339. Michael August 18th, 2007 at 6:32 pm

Some heart-of-the-order, straight-cheese, bat-missing domination. Joba is so awesome he is channeling his sh!t through Fransy.

  340. Global Warming August 18th, 2007 at 6:32 pm

You know an outing like that can really turn around a pitchers season. Let’s hope that Farnsworth can fill the not-so big shoes of Proctor as the 6th/7th inning man.

    Good stuff from the Farns.

  341. CB August 18th, 2007 at 6:33 pm

    Ron,

Honestly, I know that. We all know that. I am very, very familiar with baseball statistics, probability and statistical theory in general.

Here’s the issue – what is the interest in “predictors” of future performance when a guy just drove in a run.

If the point you are trying to make again is that Phillips isn’t that great so be it. No one things the guy is Stan Musial.

But right now he drove in a key run. That’s why games are played and no just simulated.

So how about this – I’ll trade you the “predictive value” of rinky dink hits for the discount value of a key RBI today, especially when I know if Phillips really, really tanks they will bench him.

  342. Scooter August 18th, 2007 at 6:33 pm

Suddenly we have the Worthy Farnsworth – just in time

This is why you give him every chance to straighten out. He got swings and misses from 3 pretty good hitters – Casey, Sheff and Ordonez. Is this 3 or 4 straight 1-2-3 innings?

    Something is clicking for Kyle

  343. Ron August 18th, 2007 at 6:33 pm

Yeah, I’m a Yankee fan. I also believe in stats other than batting average. Like OPS.

  344. Brandon August 18th, 2007 at 6:33 pm

THOSE FASTBALLS WERE AS STRAIGHT AS HELL, only reason they didn’t touch it was he hit the corners at 97 mph and 98 mph , if anything we might have a tradeable player in Farnsy finally !!!

  345. Yanks26 August 18th, 2007 at 6:34 pm

Who put a young Jeff Nelson into Farn’s uniform?

  346. Mike NYY August 18th, 2007 at 6:34 pm

We love you Kyle Farnsworth!!!! :D ;)

Seriously, if we could get him to use his stuff then we have a weapon in the bullpen

  347. Limey Yankee August 18th, 2007 at 6:34 pm

getting quality from farnsworth is something i just didn’t factor in to the closing month and a half of the season. if he can put it together and be a trusted arm…well that can only help us.

don’t you go breakin’ my heart kyle!!!

  348. Phil August 18th, 2007 at 6:35 pm

    bless your little nephew!

  349. Mo August 18th, 2007 at 6:36 pm

Its funny how SJ44 said a week ago that Farnsy could be valuable, and you all laughed.

  350. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 18th, 2007 at 6:37 pm

if farns was like that everytime wed have 4 trustworthy relievers and maybe edwar could become decent. wed def be able to pass the sox. they say starting pitching wins ws. nuh uh its the pen.

  351. Brandon August 18th, 2007 at 6:37 pm

Mo trade value yes I’m telling you some GM just saw that inning and told himself… ahh what the hell

  352. Michael August 18th, 2007 at 6:38 pm

Not to go all self-pitying soxfan on you guys, but is anybody else feeling pangs of dread for a repeat performance from Mo, circa Baltimore?

  353. VT Yankeefan August 18th, 2007 at 6:38 pm

Good showing by Farnzey in the 7th. Lets not hang him yet. Like it or not we need him down the stretch.

  354. Viper August 18th, 2007 at 6:38 pm

Straight fastballs are just as unhittable and sinking fastballs as long as they are located well.

Farnsworth’s problem has been that he gets behind on the count and the hitter knows a fastball is coming and he throws it down Broadway.

A well placed fastball is still the best pitch in the game.

  355. EY August 18th, 2007 at 6:38 pm

Anyone get the feeling that Farns-some-worth is feeling some pressure, or even shame from being completely overshadowed by Joba? Maybe he’s been inspired to do his job properly. (Just some wishful thinking)

  356. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 18th, 2007 at 6:39 pm

    i hate jeanie zalasko

  357. Mike NYY August 18th, 2007 at 6:39 pm

I`m with you on Phillips, Ron

He has a future as batting .260 with good defense. He`s been lucky this season. I like him and he`s a great story. I can live with what he really is to

  358. Brandon August 18th, 2007 at 6:40 pm

just ask Pete trust me Farnsy doesn’t want to be here. He picked up his stock that inning

  359. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 18th, 2007 at 6:41 pm

okay if viz can seat them down then we get to the real drama. if mo doesnt do well ill officially be worried

  360. Mike NYY August 18th, 2007 at 6:41 pm

Ugh, Vizcaino is being wasted here. PUT IN EDWAR!!!!

  361. Rebecca August 18th, 2007 at 6:41 pm

Did any of you hear how the announcer just said that Farnsworth had a 1-2-3? He utterly couldn’t believe it.

  362. Mike NYY August 18th, 2007 at 6:42 pm

    The above post was sarcasm

  363. Mike NYY August 18th, 2007 at 6:43 pm

How the hell could a necklace hurt a pitcher? Maybe a guy sliding or diving but a pitcher?

  364. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Tim McCarver oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 18th, 2007 at 6:43 pm

okay mike i was just going to say…. and shut up tim mccarver you make the list i just forgot about you

  365. Michael August 18th, 2007 at 6:43 pm

Viz wasted? This is a quick-striking offense and we need this win. Let’s win or lose with our best.

  366. PBL August 18th, 2007 at 6:43 pm

    why are necklaces so dangerous?

  367. Vinny 5743 August 18th, 2007 at 6:44 pm

Minor adjustments and Farnsworth is back in the swing of things. 97 to 100 mph is no joke to opposing batters. As long as he can locate the way he just did he’s going to be a plus. I hope he can maintain it.

  368. deadrody August 18th, 2007 at 6:44 pm

Hell yeah, Kyle. It only takes one solid game like that to build something better. We believe, Kyle. We know it’s possible.

Neclaces too dangerous ? Did McIdiot just say that ? Maybe he could enlighten us with the last serious injury that was caused by a necklace. Pretty sure the next one – will be the first. What a tard.

  369. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Tim McCarver oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 18th, 2007 at 6:44 pm

well to tim mccarver anything with a loop is dangerous because he can choke himself. this is a little known fact but tim eats with plastic silverware for his own safety

  370. Mike NYY August 18th, 2007 at 6:45 pm

DO we bring back Vizcaino next year? Or is he so burnt out he`ll be another Proctor/Gordon/Quantrill/Sturtze? Not kidding here

  371. Rebecca August 18th, 2007 at 6:46 pm

    The necklace thing is BS.

  372. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Tim McCarver oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 18th, 2007 at 6:46 pm

Mike nyy: if he can do this then of course we want him but who knows. those are the decisions that make me happy im not a GM

  373. Brandon August 18th, 2007 at 6:46 pm

MLB on Fox was so suprised by that 123 inning by FARNSY that they went into shock for a few minutes of live dead air

  374. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Tim McCarver oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 18th, 2007 at 6:48 pm

i just looked at the red sox schedule there is no way we can catch them

  375. Brandon August 18th, 2007 at 6:48 pm

McCarver for godsakes do you even know there is a game going on !

  376. Vinny 5743 August 18th, 2007 at 6:49 pm

    Rebecca,
That may be true but if he believes it and it works for him who cares.

  377. Rebecca August 18th, 2007 at 6:49 pm

Boston Yankee: Don’t be so sure; Tampa traditionally gives Boston a lot of problems.

  378. Mike NYY August 18th, 2007 at 6:49 pm

i just looked at the red sox schedule there is no way we can catch them

What if Ortiz, Ramirez, Papelbon, and Beckett all suffer freak hamstring pulls? :D

  379. Rebecca August 18th, 2007 at 6:50 pm

Vinny–That’s what I mean. I think what Tim McCarver is saying is BS, players should be allowed to wear it.

  380. SJ44 August 18th, 2007 at 6:51 pm

They aren’t trading Farnsworth now. Please.

If he pitches like this, he is the solution to their “one guy short” problem in the bullpen.

He works best when he isn’t “the man”. He’s in a perfect spot right now to be used effectively. He’s behind Mo, Viz and Joba in the pecking order. Couple that with he and Joba not being able to pitch back to back days, if he can sustain this, he can be a factor down the stretch.

The guy has the stuff. He just has to build on these good outings.

  381. Vinny 5743 August 18th, 2007 at 6:52 pm

    Rebecca,
You’re actually listening to McCarver ??? Ha Ha

  382. Brandon August 18th, 2007 at 6:52 pm

Rebecca McCarver is an idiot period.

  383. Rebecca August 18th, 2007 at 6:52 pm

    Nobody beats the Viz.

  384. Brandon August 18th, 2007 at 6:52 pm

    YEH !!!!

    NOBODY BEATS THE VIZ !!!!

  385. Chag August 18th, 2007 at 6:53 pm

    Nobody beats the ViZ!

  386. TKinDC August 18th, 2007 at 6:53 pm

nobody, but nobody beats the VIZ!

  387. Michael August 18th, 2007 at 6:53 pm

Viz missed his spot by 2 feet on 3-1. And a loose zone helps him out. Good to start catching some breaks.

  388. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Tim McCarver oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 18th, 2007 at 6:54 pm

rebecca: They play the cws four times too. CANT WE GET A BREAK!

Mike: but would you be content with a division win if tbe sox werent at full strength, i wouldnt.

  389. Mike NYY August 18th, 2007 at 6:55 pm

Mike: but would you be content with a division win if tbe sox werent at full strength, i wouldnt.’

The extra frustration and slow torture it would give Sawx fans would be worth it :D

  390. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Tim McCarver oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 18th, 2007 at 6:56 pm

    good point

  391. Rebecca August 18th, 2007 at 7:00 pm

Giambi hit that well, just in the wrong area.

  392. Brandon August 18th, 2007 at 7:01 pm

Oh and can people stop overrating Boston will it be tough to catch them ? Yes

    Can we ? Yes

can they lose to CWS ? Yes, TB in TB ? Yes

they have Oki and Paps, then there is Gagne
a broken down Ortiz, Manny isn’t Manny this year, Bucholz is dued for a bad game especially w/ questionable FB control, Beckett and Dice-K aren’t unhittable, Schilling can hit a wall and JD Drew stinks .

These are reasons we can catch them. Can it happen ? Yes.
Will it ? only time will tell

  393. Rebecca August 18th, 2007 at 7:02 pm

Three outs from ensuring at least a split with Detroit…

  394. rbizzler August 18th, 2007 at 7:03 pm

    Here comes Mo: Who’s nervous?

    Not me.

  395. Metalicca August 18th, 2007 at 7:04 pm

    Enter Sandman

    No. 42

  396. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Tim McCarver oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 18th, 2007 at 7:04 pm

brandon if you line them up on paper theyre worse and that isnt even taking the schedule into account. It will take a miracle to catch them because im sorry but the yanks are worse than the sox. But heads up you never know. the yanks have seen that over and over like last year the tigers shut down “murders’ row two”. So that makes me hesitant to say theres NO chance. but id say its the smallest chance there is

  397. Brandon August 18th, 2007 at 7:04 pm

    ENTER SANDMAN !

  398. kasey August 18th, 2007 at 7:05 pm

well farnsworth made me look like an idiot with his inning. he’s certainly not the first to do so.

anyone ever been less comfortable with rivera coming in to a three-run game?

  399. Art Vandelay August 18th, 2007 at 7:07 pm

sit down henn! this game is over

  400. Ron August 18th, 2007 at 7:07 pm

    MO.

  401. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Tim McCarver oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 18th, 2007 at 7:08 pm

mo be gentle it was just a little kid

  402. Brandon August 18th, 2007 at 7:08 pm

Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Tim McCarver oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) ….lol LONG SN btw

I just named reasons why it can happen, not that it will but it can. Boston is not unbeatable and they also have problems our problem has to do w/ Wussina and what can Phil Hughes plus the BP contribute to help.

  403. Chris August 18th, 2007 at 7:08 pm

    he looks good so far

  404. J-Dawg August 18th, 2007 at 7:08 pm

    One more out!

  405. nate c. August 18th, 2007 at 7:09 pm

yeah, henn, take it easy buddy

  406. Ron August 18th, 2007 at 7:09 pm

No walks Mo. One more out.

  407. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Tim McCarver oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 18th, 2007 at 7:09 pm

brandon: agreed one hundred percent. anything is possible. being down 10 games with 10 left is possible.

  408. Brandon August 18th, 2007 at 7:10 pm

    this ump serioulsly WTF

  409. nate c. August 18th, 2007 at 7:11 pm

fun way to end with sheff up. come on mo!

  410. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Tim McCarver oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 18th, 2007 at 7:11 pm

he called that same pitch on brandon inge last inning… that makes no sense. this is as good as it gets. DOWN GOES SHEF!!! COME ON YOU SUCK!

  411. J-Dawg August 18th, 2007 at 7:11 pm

I’d love to see Sheffield make the last out!!!!

  412. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Tim McCarver oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 18th, 2007 at 7:11 pm

  413. Brandon August 18th, 2007 at 7:11 pm

    THAAAAAAA YANKEES WIN !!!

  414. nate c. August 18th, 2007 at 7:12 pm

    awesome win!

  415. J-Dawg August 18th, 2007 at 7:12 pm

    OH YEAH!!!!!!!!

  416. harsha August 18th, 2007 at 7:12 pm

    yankees win!!!

  417. Rebecca August 18th, 2007 at 7:13 pm

    We got Mo back.

We have at least a split with Detroit.

With an LAA win, we can be back within four in the East, and with a ChiSox win, we can take sole first place in the WC.

We’re pretty @%#$$# lucky that Detroit couldn’t score with RISP, otherwise it would have been ugly.

Oh, and the Yankees struck out 12, which I so totally called.

  418. SJ44 August 18th, 2007 at 7:13 pm

I guess the “Joba needs to replace Mo” threads can cease now.

Much better movement, didn’t miss Jorge’s glove at all in the inning.

    Much smoother outing for Mo.

Been a weekend of guys turning it around. Phillips, Farnsworth and now tomorrow is Wang’s turn.

I expect him to pitch very well tomorrow.

  419. CB August 18th, 2007 at 7:13 pm

Angels up 1-0 in the first.

  420. Brandon August 18th, 2007 at 7:15 pm

CB thank you for that update

  421. J-Dawg August 18th, 2007 at 7:15 pm

Mo’s just fine, and there’s nothing to worry about!!!

  422. KAJ...says...80-55 on 8/31/07 August 18th, 2007 at 7:15 pm

GAAAAARY….GAAAAARY….HA Frickin’ HA ! One more tomorrow and go LAA 2nite @!!!!

  423. nate c. August 18th, 2007 at 7:17 pm

yeah, if wang can show us something strong, i think we will have a lot of momentum heading out west. then hughes can show his hometown how much he’s grown up!

  424. SJ44 August 18th, 2007 at 7:19 pm

BTW, Ian Kennedy is pitching tonight for Scranton. Got the side out in order in the first.

    0-0 Top 2nd.

  425. harsha August 18th, 2007 at 7:19 pm

lets tip our hats to the monster that is Roger Clemens. The offense did what it usually does but rocket really battled

  426. Stuart August 18th, 2007 at 7:22 pm

Kasey you ever read your posts.. To say you are a half empty guy is an understatement.

Kyles 6th clean inning. Obviosuly if he can pitch better it gives the yanks a good pen.. again one of there porblems is the Kyle and Joba rules, no back to back games blah blah blah and kyle cannot go more then 1 inning.

good win.. Hopefully Wang who has not pitched well for weeks has a good game..

check out Bondermans ERA in the 1st inning it is REAL BAD……

  427. Joe from Long Island August 18th, 2007 at 7:23 pm

Mo, Krazy Kyle, and Andy Phillips – Baseball truly is a game of redemption.

  428. Jonathon August 18th, 2007 at 7:25 pm

Nice win today…just like you’d like to draw it up. Really felt like a playoff game, late afternoon, cool weather, shadows moving in, FOX, contending teams, 2 out hits. Hopefully the results will be as crisp in October (fingers crossed).

  429. Bob Michaels August 18th, 2007 at 7:25 pm

Rivera, Farnsworth, shut up their critics.

  430. Bob Michaels August 18th, 2007 at 7:26 pm

Posada should get some MVP voters.

  431. Jonathon August 18th, 2007 at 7:30 pm

He should and will…did you hear McCarver today? Something to the effect that teams should be cautious when signing 36-year old catchers. When catchers go, they go quickly. What an a-hole. Don’t be a hater guy. I’m sure the Yankees know all the risks associated with signing an aging catcher. But he is part of the team and a fan favorite, he’ll be back, and taken care of.

  432. Stuart August 18th, 2007 at 7:39 pm

    Bob,

2 decent outings for Farnsworth do not erase the whole season..

for mariano he gets a pass for life from Yankee fans.. He is 1st ballot HOF, Mariano and Kyle have nothing in common..

  433. Bob Michaels August 18th, 2007 at 7:40 pm

Yes, Jonathon, those media types like to strike fear into y
Yankee fans hearts, by saying the Mets need a F.A.

  434. NJ August 18th, 2007 at 7:40 pm

    2-0 Angels

  435. CB August 18th, 2007 at 7:40 pm

Angels up 2-0 in the second.

  436. CB August 18th, 2007 at 7:41 pm

    Sorry,

Make that Angels 4-0 – Chone Figgins just took Schill deep.

  437. NJ August 18th, 2007 at 7:41 pm

4-0 Angels. Figgins just took Schilling deep.

  438. Rebecca August 18th, 2007 at 7:41 pm

You all mean 4-0, right? ;)

  439. Bob Michaels August 18th, 2007 at 7:42 pm

Stuart, they both wear the Pinstripes, we need both to perform up to their abilities.

  440. Jonathon August 18th, 2007 at 7:42 pm

    Stereo commenting…love it!!!!

  441. J-Dawg August 18th, 2007 at 7:42 pm

    Aw. Poor Curt. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHHHAAA!!!!!

  442. CB August 18th, 2007 at 7:43 pm

    Schilling looks bad.

He’s throwing a lot of pitches and the Angels are racking up singles with their kill you by thousands of Gnat bites offense.

  443. Bob Michaels August 18th, 2007 at 7:44 pm

Want the Angels to win the next two, Bombers to win Sunday, so they can head west trailing by only three.

  444. Bob Michaels August 18th, 2007 at 7:45 pm

Did the Yankees send Phil Hughes to the west coast today? He starts monday`s game

  445. BBFan August 18th, 2007 at 7:46 pm

There are lot of players on the team who did not perform well since the begining of the season. The list goes like: Matsui, Abrue, Cano, Damon, Kyle. This resulted in a poor start and many here wrote off the season, including ardent fans like SJ.

One by one these players turned around thier performance the team is back in contention.

I blieve Kyle is the last and his performance in the last few outings indicate he is turning around. He is going to contribute this season. Obviosuly, lot of people here hate him, still if he performs and helps the team who cares. As I have maintained all along, just like others Kyle will turn around and help the team this year. Then during the off-season he will get traded and Yanks will get some value back.

  446. Bob Michaels August 18th, 2007 at 7:47 pm

SJ44, he`s the only Kennedy I like, hope to see in sept.

  447. NJ August 18th, 2007 at 7:48 pm

Varitek is going to sit out Sunday and Monday after catching 3 games in 2 days. Could be good for the Yanks.

  448. Bob Michaels August 18th, 2007 at 7:48 pm

    BBFAN, well stated.

  449. Rebecca August 18th, 2007 at 7:48 pm

The little leaguer pitching for texas has struck out 13, and it’s the fifth inning.

They NEED to win tomorrow…that long flight, going to face the Angels, a team they can’t seem to beat. I know there’s no such thing as a must win until it’s an elimination game and definately not with still 50-something games to go, but I’ve got a bad feeling about this roadtrip so I’d like the team to go into it on a positive note.

  451. J-Dawg August 18th, 2007 at 7:50 pm

It’s not the best time for them to have to rest Varitek, because Doug Mirabelli was placed on the DL.

  452. Rebecca August 18th, 2007 at 7:52 pm

    Make that 15.

  453. NJ August 18th, 2007 at 7:52 pm

J-Dawg, correct and Wakefield is scheduled to pitch one of the days.

  454. CB August 18th, 2007 at 7:52 pm

As a sign of real class, after yesterday’s Gag-Me meltdown in boston, one of their very classy fans threw a bottle of water from the stands at Gag-me and the bottle made it all the way to the mound!

They should sign that fan up and give him the eight.

    Bob Michaels,

Phil already flew out to California in preparation for his start.

  455. Keith August 18th, 2007 at 7:55 pm

The name of the game now is to capitalize on everything wrong that Boston does. No letting up.
Wang needs to right his ship tomorrow and watch Boston self destruct by needing to rest Varitek.

  456. Jonathon August 18th, 2007 at 7:56 pm

Fortunately for the Yanks, Hughes has been great on the road…not so good at home. Hopefully that trend will continue in the short term…don’t want it to be that way the rest of his career.

  457. randy l August 18th, 2007 at 8:07 pm

    sj44-
since you’ve seen wang’s finger up close and you’re saying that it’s pretty ugly looking, why wouldn’t they skip a start or two to heal it up. if it’s not getting any better ,wouldn’t it be better to get it right instead of having him change his style of pitching to work around the problem. it’s not like his games are a lock anymore. i would hate to see him sit out , but what good is it having him in there it if the condition is deteriorating with each start.
i’m not big on pitchers continuing throwing when there’s an injury problem. there’s too much changing stuff to get around an injury. i think it’s better to take a step back and get things right. why should a problem like this linger on and on ? it makes no sense. if it’s serious shut him down. if it’s not why isn’t it getting better?

  458. NJ August 18th, 2007 at 8:09 pm

Boston strands 2 RISP. Still 4-0.

  459. kat August 18th, 2007 at 8:12 pm

great game today…I’m on my way home from the stadium aand can’t wait to see the replay of bobbys homer and that cut off play by roger!!!

Love this–Manny was up 3-0 and Ks.

    Lovely!

  461. kasey August 18th, 2007 at 8:22 pm

    1. we can all hope farnsworth figures it out and contributes. expecting it is something different entirely. he hasn’t – over the course of his entire career – proven that he can pitch effectively on a consistent basis. i don’t know why we would expect him to start now.

    2. likewise, if wang’s finger is so bad, why is it we’re supposed to expect him to dominate tomorrow? if THAT’S what’s been bothering him, why would it miraculously heal for a game against the tigers? the guy’s been pitching the same way for six weeks – up in the zone, falling behind hitters, etc. and i’m to believe it’s because of his finger. i’m also supposed to believe that, even though the finger hasn’t healed, he’ll be fine tomorrow against one of the best offensive teams in baseball? okay.

  462. . August 18th, 2007 at 8:24 pm

Why don’t we have a player half as good as him ?

    C’mon triple play!

I KNOW!! hahaha triple play.. here we go Lugo!

  469. armand August 18th, 2007 at 8:44 pm

crap.. lugo singles.. 5-2… come on little weaver!!! just for tonight!!!

  470. Cumberberg August 18th, 2007 at 8:45 pm

very surprised at how poorly the big name sux players have been hitting this month — yucklis, .226; ramierez, .246, ortiz, .267, varitek, .220. at the same time, their crap players seem to be heating up with nancy, lugo, cora hitting better.

even if the sux seem to have a better schedule, i still feel in my bones that their swoon will continue and/or get worse. we can still catch them.

  471. Rebecca August 18th, 2007 at 8:46 pm

Ok, Anaheim needs to seriously think about going to their ‘pen right now…

  472. Cumberberg August 18th, 2007 at 8:46 pm

    wow, that really really sux.

  473. armand August 18th, 2007 at 8:47 pm

HOLY Crap David Ortiz hit a grand slam!! geez the Weaver brothers must have it out for us.. maybe Gagne can help us out again..

  474. Rebecca August 18th, 2007 at 8:49 pm

Something tells me the Red Sox aren’t going to put Gagne in, though…

  475. Cumberberg August 18th, 2007 at 8:51 pm

well, on the plus side, it’s only the fifth. still plenty of time for the angels to come back. personally, i’d like a nice sixteen inning loss for the sux that blows out both bullpens.

  476. Josh August 18th, 2007 at 8:52 pm

Weaver is definitely going to bean Ortiz next time he faces him. He did not like how Ortiz stood in the batter’s box and admired his home run.

  477. passer by August 18th, 2007 at 8:54 pm

I would like the 2 remaining sox vs halos games go 20 innings each and hopefully halos win. A tired Angel team is what the doctor ordered for the yankees to get over the halo jinx.

  478. armand August 18th, 2007 at 8:54 pm

bring out the rally monkey for the halos.. yeah it’s only the fifth anyhow.. let the has-been-town bullpen lose it..

“They’re loud, they’re drunk, they’re obnoxious. They’re one of the few places you’ll hear racial comments. It’s just different. ”
these were gary matthews’ comments about the boston fans in the bleachers after last night’s game. imagine what he’s hearing tonight.

  480. Big Johnson August 18th, 2007 at 8:56 pm

“You’re post above is exactly right. Relying on Andy Phillips for production is like getting on Melky’s case for not hitting 30 HR’s.

Cashman put together a team that doesn’t need a 1B to be a basher. Just make the defense better (especially when Wanger is on the hill) and contribute.”

I couldn’t agree more. Andy Philips is almost a 300 hitter again. This team simply doesn’t need his offense. It needs his glove. And he is giving us both. I’m not sure what else

“we can all hope farnsworth figures it out and contributes. expecting it is something different entirely. he hasn’t – over the course of his entire career – proven that he can pitch effectively on a consistent basis. i don’t know why we would expect him to start now.”

This is exactly what is keeping me up at night. I am actually hoping the guy fails every time out in a way that doesn’t cost us the game. This is the only way he doesn’t make the the post season roster. If he is ok here on in, he will be on the mound in a critical 8th inning playoff game, an intolerable possibility.

As you say, there is zero reason to expect this career failure to succeed in any capacity, and any token success he has now will set the stage for a catastrophic post season implosion. I want no part of that.

passer by, we did play the halos really well just before the all star break, when the yankees began to turn the corner. we came within one run in regulation of sweeping that series.

  482. wesson August 18th, 2007 at 9:02 pm

does anybody really think the yanks could overcome a 5-0 hole vs LAA?

it will be very interesting to see how NY does out there next week!

  483. passer by August 18th, 2007 at 9:03 pm

    Cumber,
Your are right. I forgot abt that series. Regardless, I want us to do well against the halos more than once before I feel comfortable seeing them on our schedule. They stung us way too many times in the past.

  484. Rebecca August 18th, 2007 at 9:04 pm

I saw the Yankees beat the Angels 14-9 on 6 July.

The Angels were in the midst of a really bad run, like when we went on that 1-7 thing against the Rockies and Giants.

Beating the Angels isn’t going to be easy, especially now that they’re playing better. Shut them down early, and we should have a chance, but it’s critical our ‘pen is lights out. As much as Kyle Farnsworth is doing to redeem himself, I do not want him pitching in a close game.

  488. Cumberberg August 18th, 2007 at 9:06 pm

And that last year we came back from down 9-0 and WON the game.

The Jeff Nelson bullpen fracas, Karim Garcia dripping with blood all went on while Mo was preparing for the 9th inning. Rick Sutcliffe says: ‘There’s no such thing as an automatic in baseball, but Mariano Rivera is as automatic as you can get.’

Thanks for the help, Angels. awesome.

  502. Darrin August 19th, 2007 at 12:07 am

Don’t look now, but the Yankees are now only 2.5 games behind the Angels.

It behooves the Yanks to play VERY WELL this upcoming week in Anaheim. Seattle is now only ONE GAME behind the Angels in the loss column. There is a legitimate battle in the AL West; and if Seattle can overtake the Angels, then the Wild Card battle could come down to the Yankees and Angels.

And I mean this when I write it: I’d much rather the Angels miss the playoffs than the Red Sox. Sometimes good things eventually happen to the Yankees even when Boston makes the postseason; good things NEVER happen when the Angels make it.

  503. Global Warming August 19th, 2007 at 12:17 am

“And I mean this when I write it: I’d much rather the Angels miss the playoffs than the Red Sox. ”

Agree with you 110 Percent on this notion.

Same goes for the Tigers. I would much rather face the Red Sox than a healthy Tigers Staff and pen.

  504. mel August 19th, 2007 at 12:23 am

The Seattle game’s not over yet. Chicago only down by 2.

  505. Darrin August 19th, 2007 at 12:33 am

I don’t have much hope for Chicago. There’s very little chance of them scoring any runs off that Putz in the 9th.

Global Warming: I don’t share the same fear of the Tigers. Last year they had the Baseball Voodoo going for them. I’m not even sure they’re going to make the playoffs this year.

What concerns me is that, as of today, the most likely way the Yanks make the playoffs is via the Wild Card; and the most likely winner of the AL West is still the Angels; thus, the most likely best-of-5 1st round matchup will be New York-Anaheim, which scares the beejesus out of me. OTOH, if the Yanks and Red Sox both make the playoffs the only way they face each other is in a 7 game ALCS. Regardless of who has home field advantage, I feel the Yanks have a fair 50-50 chance against Boston.

But against Anaheim in a 5 game series? Let’s just say, I feel it’s less than 50-50.

  506. Marius August 19th, 2007 at 12:37 am

So all of you who said that Phillips can’t hit and is an automatic out. What do you say now?
For the time he has been here, he has been hitting and has been playing nice defense saving runs.
1 – 9 all being homerun hitters doesn’t work and people need to step off the Steinbrenner utopia. He doesn’t put together a good team and the Yankees were successful when they have guys who knew how to get the ball in play and weren’t just lumbering HR hitters.

  507. mel August 19th, 2007 at 12:42 am

    Stupid Seattle.

  508. Darrin August 19th, 2007 at 12:45 am

Maruis you’re point is spot on.

Of all people who should understand this, it’s Yankee fans. Didn’t we learn from last year that trying to stack your lineup with statistical all-world players doesn’t win you anything? Think about how the Sux won it all in ’04 with Minky at 1st and a Pokey Reese/Mark Bellhorn 2nd base platoon. Better yet, what about the ’96 Yanks who won it with Charlie Hayes, Mariano Duncan and Joe Girardi as regular players.

Believe me, if the Yankees do not win the WS this year, it’s NOT because Andy Phillips played 1b instead of Wilson Betemit.

  509. Viper August 19th, 2007 at 12:55 am

What you guys seem to fail to understand is that competition for playing time is a good thing.

Andy Phillips shouldn’t be the everyday 1B and should be platooning with Betemit and others right now.

Charlie Hayes wasn’t the starter on the ’96 Yanks. It was Wade Boggs.

Torre went with the hot hand and played Hayes some games and he did the same thing with Fielder and Strawberry as the DH.

Having a great bench makes this team so much stronger because these guys are competing with each other for playing time.

That is never a bad thing for a good ball club.

  510. Marius August 19th, 2007 at 1:11 am

I don’t think anyone said competition for playing time is a bad thing. I do think I said that Andy Phillips isn’t the auto out some make him out to be. The reality of it is that Andy Phillips learned how to hit and hit consistently in the bigs.
He knows how to in AAA. Now he does it here. Giving him playing time only helps him and helps the Yankees.
Betemit it there to play bench and fill in. Phillips is far better defensively and you need a good defense to win games.

In all of the Yankees winning seasons where they went to and won the World Series the team was made up of hitters, not HR hitters. You need that kind of ball club that gets on base and moves runners over with the occasional homerun.
Steibrenner just likes to fill the team with older homerun hitters. He looks at it from a business perspective. The more all stars you have the more money you make in merchandising. Cashman has shown that you can make the same money from homegrown talent and scrappy players.

  511. Darrin August 19th, 2007 at 1:14 am

I like Andy Phillips. Of all the options, he certainly seems like the best defensive option. The last thing this lineup needs is another masher. And Betemit, while he does have more pop, is a strikeout machine.

I’m not sure I understand your two main points: 1) ‘Competition for playing time is a good thing’ and 2) ‘Andy Phillips should be platooning with Betemit and others’

Should the Yanks bring in another SS or 3B now to spice up the competition?

What is it about a good fielding 1B hitting in the mid .280s that bothers you?

  512. Andrew August 19th, 2007 at 1:35 am

    Darrin -

So by your logic, the Yankees should replace Giambi with Duncan, Cano with Phillips and A-Rod with Betemit. Gotcha.

The “stacking your lineup with good hitters is bad” idea is so moronically stupid, I can’t stand it. Who would you rather have in your lineup, a .280 hitter who slugs .550, or a .260 hitter who slugs .360? Oh, but the .260 hitter gets paid the minimum, you say? SIGN ME UP!

  513. Phillipsfan August 19th, 2007 at 2:44 am

The Yankees win with Andy Phillips starting. Platooning him or pushing him aside to put in a .231 hitter with no skills at first base is moronic.

The team was on a roll but you people wasn’t satisfied. You just had to see that Andy get benched. Naturally the idiot that is Joe Torre obliged and naturally the team lost 3 straight. One of the loss was featured the powerful Giambi starting at first and the team got shut out!

Torre recovers from temporary brainpower loss and starts Andy again and the team wins two in row and back on roll. Don’t tell me this is a coincidence because this scenario is pretty much what has happen for the past two months.

With the exception of Andy, the everday lineup is the same as the one in the first half that was lifeless, lost and apathetic. Up comes Andy and the team goes on roll and the haters quickly come out of the woodwork the first minute he struggles, as if that never happens to anyone else.

There’s just no shortage of dumb fans out there.

  514. Viper August 19th, 2007 at 2:53 am

_Should the Yanks bring in another SS or 3B now to spice up the competition?

What is it about a good fielding 1B hitting in the mid .280s that bothers you?_

First off, you misrepresented my point and I have to assume you’re smarter than that.

Nobody is suggesting that they should bring in competition for A-Rod or Jeter.

I’m talking about 1B, DH, and even LF to an extent – where there has been a platoon and competition for playing time for awhile now.

Phillips hit well for a few weeks, but he is not an everyday player – which is why he regressed signifcantly after his initial hot streak.

He should be playing 3 times a week while Betemit should play against right-handers a couple of days a week as well.

Your bench is much better off when they are used. You can’t sit them for several games and then expect them to come off the bench stone cold and produce.

  515. dontfirecash August 19th, 2007 at 2:58 am

“With the exception of Andy, the everday lineup is the same as the one in the first half that was lifeless, lost and apathetic. Up comes Andy and the team goes on roll”

I highly doubt that Andy Phillips is the reason the yanks went on a roll. What does Andy Phillips have to do with Melky, Abreu, Cano and Matsui mashing the ball. When those four guys started hitting, the Yankees started winning. Andy Phillips has nothing to do with that, IMO.

  516. Viper August 19th, 2007 at 3:00 am

_There’s just no shortage of dumb fans out there._

You said it, brother. I would start with your post right at the top of that list.

If you think Phillips is the reason why this team has been on a roll for a couple of months, I would like some of whatever you’re smoking.

It probably had nothing to do with the level of competition of the other teams and the fact that the whole lineup was murdering the ball from top to bottom.

They’ve won the last two games because of PITCHING.

Phillips didn’t have anything to do with holding DET to one run last night and two runs today. That distinction goes to Pettitte and Clemens, plus their relief.

  517. Phillipsfan August 19th, 2007 at 3:26 am

“Phillips hit well for a few weeks, but he is not an everyday player –”

    And you know this because…?

  518. Phillipsfan August 19th, 2007 at 3:31 am

“What does Andy Phillips have to do with Melky, Abreu, Cano and Matsui mashing the ball.”

Well, just to refresh your memory, when he was called up and started playing everyday at the end of June and beginning of July, his hardnosed play rejuvenated the team. Even some of the Yankees said it. Just look up those articles in the archives.

He provided that spark that ignited the rest of team. Energy, momentum and hot hitting is contagious. That is a well known fact. Of course, all you haters will never be convinced and will never admit it.

  519. dontfirecash August 19th, 2007 at 3:44 am

“He provided that spark that ignited the rest of team. Energy, momentum and hot hitting is contagious.”

I do not believe that Andy Phllips sparked the Yankees. I don’t doubt that the guys in the lockerroom are happy to have him around. I do doubt that Andy Phillips is the reason the Yankees turned their season around. It has way more to do with the fact that they feasted on weak teams in July and smashed the living crap out of the ball. Also, AAAAndy Phillips WARP valus is also a big fat zero, meaning that Andy Phillips is the definition of a replacement player.

  520. Phillipsfan August 19th, 2007 at 3:54 am

Yes, the same weak teams that they couldn’t beat even if their life was depended on it, right?

Of course, haters like you will quickly go to the stats and rankings when you have nothing else to lean on. According to stats, the St. Louis Cardinals shouldn’t even be in the playoffs with their 82-80 record, much less winning the WS. So much for numbers.

  521. dontfirecash August 19th, 2007 at 3:55 am

Confusing last sentence on my part. It should read “Phillip’s WARP value is a zero, meaning that he is the definition of a replacement level player.”

  522. dontfirecash August 19th, 2007 at 3:58 am

“According to stats, the St. Louis Cardinals shouldn’t even be in the playoffs with their 82-80 record, much less winning the WS. So much for numbers.”

Why shouldn’t they have been in the playoffs? They won more games than any other team in their division, which is all that matters last I checked.

  523. dontfirecash August 19th, 2007 at 4:06 am

“Of course, haters like you will quickly go to the stats and rankings when you have nothing else to lean on”

What else do we have to lean on in baseball besides statistics? I certainly don’t remember every play of every game over the course of the season. So I can’t remember all the runs Andy Phllips saved and all runs he cost the Yankees. Luckily, I don’t have to because with the WARP stat it gives us the amount of wins Andy Phillips is worth to the Yankees this season; that number would be zero.

  524. Phillipsfan August 19th, 2007 at 4:07 am

Right, but they managed to beat everyone else that had much better records than them. If baseball was as simple as just punching a bunch of numbers to see who comes out on top, then why bother playing?

They use players past numbers to “predict” or categorize what kind of player is. Unfortunately for you, that isn’t valid for someone like Andy because he’s had very limited playing time in all time in the majors.

He’s just had the misfortune of coming up in a Yankee organization at a time in the past 7 years that only valued veterans and superstars over their own farm system.

He was never given a chance and the few chances he got like last year, the first minute he slumped, he was shelved for the likes of Craig Wilson. It’s kind of hard to establish yourself under those circumstances.

  525. Phillipsfan August 19th, 2007 at 4:10 am

“So I can’t remember all the runs Andy Phllips saved and all runs he cost the Yankees.”

Right. That means you don’t know enough about him first hand but yet you (and other haters here) are so certain he isn’t good enough.

  526. dontfirecash August 19th, 2007 at 4:13 am

I agree with you that the Yanks are partially to blame for the version of Andy Phillips that we currently have. They f-ed up his development by constantly sending him up and down over the past three years. I think he could have been a much better version of the player he currently is if he had been given a better chance by the Yankees.

  527. dontfirecash August 19th, 2007 at 4:15 am

haha, can you specifically remember every play of every game that Andy played in? I doubt it, and if you can you are pretty effin smart.

  528. Phillipsfan August 19th, 2007 at 4:22 am

And he can still be that player but it seems like the Yankees and some of the fans here are just looking for any excuse to stifle him again.

Yes, he does get hot and yes he does get cold but isn’t that true for just about everybody? If you watch him the past couple of weeks during his “slump” his outs were not automatic. Many of them were hit well but were right at somebody or someone made a great play on him. With the few at bats he’s had so far, a difference of 4 or 5 more hits and his average can very well be .300 right now.

Again, so much for those dumb stats.

  529. Phillipsfan August 19th, 2007 at 4:31 am

“haha, can you specifically remember every play of every game that Andy played in? I doubt it, and if you can you are pretty effin smart.”

You don’t need to. If you follow someone everyday and watch him closely, then you get a pretty good idea of how a player is doing overall.

For instance, do I remember the exact number of hits someone gets in the White Sox series? No, but I have an idea of how a player did in that series.

  530. dontfirecash August 19th, 2007 at 4:39 am

Yeah, but in order to accurately tell if Andy Phillips cost runs or created runs you would need to remember every defensive play he was part of and every at bat he had. That is why WARP is a valuable stat..it remembers all that for us.

  531. E-ROC August 19th, 2007 at 6:16 am

dontfirecash–LOL, you’re still arguing about Phillips? I thought you would’ve given that up already. Anyway, Jose Cruz, Jr. is on the Scranton roster. I don’t know when that happened.

  532. The D train August 19th, 2007 at 8:16 am

Andy Phillips is no different than anybody else on the roster. He’s 1/25th of the team and any and all contributions are gladly accepted. Seldom does one player carry an entire team. Rarely is the entire team hot at the same time.

  533. Dan LaTorraca August 19th, 2007 at 8:57 am

Yesterday was his first day, and game with the team. I did not get a chance to talk to him or anything, but some of the other guys in the clubhouse seemed excited to have another veteran bat in the lineup with the playoffs nearing.

here is the link to the post on my blog about this, it has a bit more info:

“eah, but in order to accurately tell if Andy Phillips cost runs or created runs you would need to remember every defensive play he was part of and every at bat he had. That is why WARP is a valuable stat..it remembers all that for us.”

I am a big fan of sabremetrics, but they don’t ‘remember’ anything. They are simply one extra way of evaluating talent. Nothing replaces watching these guys play every day.

Think of it this way. Many players claim that ERA is a great meter of a pitcher’s success. Used in the correct way, as one extra tool, this is true. But blindly following stats doesn’t tell the entire story. For example you can have 2 or 3 terrible blowouts and pitch 99% of your games well and still have a high ERA. Sort of the way Moose has pitched this year. Was Myers an effecive pitcher? He had an ERA of 2.66 and a whip of 1.3. Watching him everyday spelled a different story. He was dreadful.

Inherited runs scored is another great stat when used simply as one tiny meter of success. An 8th inning guy will have a terrific number even if he gives up tons of runs. You simply cant look at any one stat, even Bill James coveted Warp, Vorp, or win shares without a comprehensive look. Reducing any player to stats on a sheet is an unfair and hollow assessment of talent. You simply cant build successful teams like that.

Another example of how stats can mislead. In the 1930s a guy by the name of Zeke Bonura played first for chicago. He led the league in fielding percentage 3 straight years! Most who watched him everyday would rank him in the lower decile of fielders. The guy benefited from having terrible range making his fielding percentage artificially look great despite the fact he was a poor fielder.

I will grant you James built a championship Red Sox team with these metrics in mind, but not blindly. They also had terrific defense, something the overwhelming majority of Championship teams focused on along with pitching.

Andy has played exceptionally well for us defensively. He is also contributing with his bat. Finally, if you want to harp on any one stat, you should probably include the most important one that I think we can all agree on, WINS. The Yanks are simply winning with him at first for reasons I believe are clear, but not easily recorded on any scorecard. Cashman knows it, Torre knows, many here know it.

I believe and hope the experimenting at first has now run its course, as it is readily clear that Andy at first gives us the best shot at winning. Perhaps not the best shot at highest win shares or Worp, but ‘W’s. The more complicated the algorithm, the easier it is for me to poke holes in the stat. Many of the stats quoted by James are so complex that most here simply take his word for it that they are accurate. This doesn’t mean they don’t have value, but you cant replace watching a player daily with ANY stat.

    Good lookin’ out, Dan LaTorraca.

what’s with seattle being 1/2 game ahead of the yankees with a plus 9 run differential. are they extremely lucky or are the yankees extremely unlucky? do they play a better strategy that allows them to win close game? according to the expanded espn standings that is based on bill james’ pythagorean standings the mariners record should be 61-59. the yankees’ pythagorean record is 76-47. that’s makes the yankees 15 games ahead of seattle in the expanded standings.
i don’t love bill james( actually i can’t stand the guy) , but it makes sense that there is a relationship between runs scored and runs given up and a team’s won/loss record. if a team scores 593 runs and gave up 593 runs and played 120 games ,you’d think they’d be about 60-60. seattle has scored 593 runs and gave up 9 less runs(584) so you’d figure they’d be 9 runs over .500 which seems like it would be a couple of games over. they are not two games over .500. they are 16 games over.
i have no answer to this, but i’m hoping it’s luck and they’ll fall back to earth because it’d be nice to get a 5-6 game wild card lead so they could do things like rest wang’s damaged finger and get ready for the playoffs.
their manager even quit in mid season.they don’t have a player with over 19 home runs and their first baseman is hitting .209 in almost 400 at bats.

  537. randy l August 19th, 2007 at 9:34 am

that should have been 13 1/2 games ahead but you get the idea.

  538. randy l August 19th, 2007 at 9:46 am

“I will grant you James built a championship Red Sox team with these metrics in mind, but not blindly.”
now why would you say that? there’s any number of reasons besides bill james that the red sox won a world series( like the playoffs are a crap shoot). most of their key players were there ahead of him and last year after using his metrics for three years they finished third barely over .500.

Tavarez on the mound for the Red Sox today and Wang dealing for the Yankees. I smell 4 games out !

  540. Garbriel August 19th, 2007 at 10:03 am

It would be so sweet if we could go on a tear and hit 80 wins by the end of the month !

  541. Frankie D. August 19th, 2007 at 10:25 am

Further proof why Cashman has done the right thing in developing starting pitching within the system is the putrid free agent class of this coming winter. Draw from Schilling, Bartolo Colon, Freddy Garcia, Kenny Rogers, Carlos Silva, Livan Hernandez, Joe Kennedy, and Jason Jennings.
Possibly the worst free agent class in years. Hardly a bottom of the rotation consideration from the group. Look the other way and keep walking.

  542. Big Johnson August 19th, 2007 at 10:39 am

“they don’t have a player with over 19 home runs and their first baseman is hitting .209 in almost 400 at bats.”

Amazing. Winning without a good hitting first baseman or the long ball. Go figure.

Can we get Buck Showalter back into town for just a couple days to restore some YANKEE ORDER in the attire department?

I don’t know what McCarver was talking about re: the “danger” of those ubiquitous neck-wreathes pitchers are wearing…but the fact is that YANKEES SHOULD NOT BE WEARING THEM. They look awful.

Also, memo to Karl Farnsworth: not that you’ve done anything to make us believe you’ve noticed yet, but this isn’t the Boston Red Sox. This is the New York Yankees. You DO NOT WEAR CAMOUFLAGE under your uniform. You wear SOLID NAVY OR BLACK.

Somewhere in Hawthorne, New York, Billy Martin is punching holes in his coffin lid.

  544. NYY August 19th, 2007 at 10:48 am

Is Seattle the team that is going to beat out the yankees for the wild card. The Pesky Mariners are beginning to scare the yankees.

  545. Rocco August 19th, 2007 at 11:07 am

/\ maybe… but they are only 2 games behind the Angles now so maybe the anges will slump and we can win the wild card and the angles miss the playoffs all together. That would be the best scenario imo. I would actually like to see Seattle win their division, cleveland win the central, Yanks win the east and have the tigers win the wild card.

  546. NYY August 19th, 2007 at 11:21 am

u must be really Rocco. Don’t dream too much. The Sox r not going any where.

  547. Josh August 19th, 2007 at 11:50 am

Whats with Jeter being out of the line-up today?

  548. In the Thicke Of it August 19th, 2007 at 11:53 am

Boston misses the playoffs…LAA and Seattle battling for division title and the loser takes the Wild Card…Yankees win the division as Boston continues to swoon !

  549. Rocco August 19th, 2007 at 1:05 pm

Sorry 5 games out isnt much with 6 games to play head to head…. the way the 2 teams are playing, i can see the yanks taking at least 4 of the 6 games. If they take 5 thats a 4 game swing in the yankees favor… sorry i’m not giving up on the division until we are mathematically eliminated.

I even said we would win the division when we were over 10 games out.
