Game 124: Tigers at Yankees

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Aug 19, 2007 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Here is the lineup:

YANKEES
Damon LF
Cabrera CF
Abreu RF
Rodriguez 3B
Matsui DH
Posada C
Cano 2B
Betemit SS
Phillips 1B
Wang RHP (13-6, 4.09)

Pregame chatter: Derek Jeter is out of the lineup. Joe Torre said yesterday that the shortstop is “pretty banged up” and needs the time. I also suspect Hideki Matsui is more banged up than the Yankees are letting on. This will be the fifth time this month that he has been the DH. Godzilla has two big ice packs on his knees after every game. … Yankees are facing Jeremy Bonderman (10-5, 4.65).

Thanks again to Brian Heyman, who in addition to covering the series for me, called in the lineups. I need to catch a plane to Cali today as the Angels series starts tomorrow. It’s crazy that both the Yankees and Angels have to fly from the northeast to Orange County and play the next night. At least neither team has an advantage.

we need to get to bonderman early then weve got them

  2. Rebecca August 19th, 2007 at 12:13 pm

The Angels have to fly to Cali tonight too? That takes away a jet-lag advantage.

The Angels scored 12 off Bonderman in 3 innings. It’d be pretty cool if the Yankees could do something like that as well.

  3. . August 19th, 2007 at 12:14 pm

    John Lackey.

  4. SJ44 August 19th, 2007 at 12:16 pm

I hope for a Yankee win today and a 15 inning Angels win in Boston.

That should make the Angels “fresh” for the start of their homestand.

BTW, is there a softer team in baseball than the Angels? They play great at home but, when they play teams away from home they play so soft its not funny.

Blew a 5 run lead to the Red Sox, then just mailed in the last two innings.

I think Seattle can overtake the Angels. Better offense, deeper bullpen, and their starters do just enough to win games.

Just because the Angels play well against the Yankees, I think folks tend to overrate them. They aren’t that good.

Hopefully, the Yankees go out there and play the way they did when they last played them in NY. If they do, they should win that series.

sj44: all that may be true but their speed is dangerous and the way mike socia (sp) harnesses it is very dangerous, once the train starts rolling it is very tough to stop them from stringing those basehits together for runs

  7. E-ROC August 19th, 2007 at 12:24 pm

Hopefully, the Yankees can score 10 runs in the first inning. Bonderman sucks in the first inning and maybe his struggling ways continue today.

Off topic–Bob Ley/Outside the Lines did a nice piece on Mo Vaughn.

  8. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Tim McCarver oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 19th, 2007 at 12:26 pm

eroc: i saw in SI, they had a where are they now and i saw what mos been doing with the projects thats really great that hes giving back. when they let go of mo thats when i stopped becoming a sox fan i grew up idolizing him he was the man

  9. SJ44 August 19th, 2007 at 12:27 pm

Their speed really hurts the Red Sox when they play them, doesn’t it?

The most overrated commodity in today’s baseball is speed. You keep Figgins off the bases, their running game is less effective.

I also don’t buy the whole “genius manager” stuff we hear about their manager. The same guy who left Dustin Mosely in to get killed, flushing a 3 run lead down the drain, when they had a chance to sweep the Red Sox in Anaheim. That’s not a “genius”.

Same guy who got his butt handed to him last night with more bonehead managing.

There are no “genius managers”. Just guys who like to hear the sound of somebody calling him a “genius”. Their manager falls into that catagory.

They had one fluke run (2002) and have faded down the stretch every year since. Every year, they have more talent than anybody in the West and every year they fade. If he managed in NY, he would never keep his job. Let’s see if the “genius” can keep them from fading again today.

Wouldn’t surprise me if they mail in today’s effort, so they can look like worldbeaters when they return home. Its been their pattern for most of the last few seasons.

You pitch them tough, staying ahead in counts, they are very, very beatable, regardless of their speed.

  10. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Tim McCarver oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 19th, 2007 at 12:31 pm

actually sj44 considering you didnt watch the game you obviously dont know what youre talking about. considering I DID watch them play all weekend the speed WAS wicked effective against the sox. they were all over the paths and the sox pitchers were clearly disrupted

  11. John-24 August 19th, 2007 at 12:32 pm

Is Shelley Duncan ever going to get a start? I mean, Phillips has done an “ok” job, but look at his OPS in the past few games. He’s basically turned into a weak singles hitter.

Shelley should have earned more playing time since he has been one of the top producers when in the lineup.

See handling of Edwar Rodriguez when it comes to rookies…i just hope Shelley doesn’t get too much rust or he’ll be worthless.

  12. hh August 19th, 2007 at 12:34 pm

The 1-2-3 of Lackey, Escobar, Weaver really isn’t something I look forward to the Yankees facing in the playoffs.

especially with Shields, Speier, KRod — (even though I really don’t think KRod is that reliable).. but Shields kills the Yanks.

  13. Ian August 19th, 2007 at 12:35 pm

Random Question: If I have season tickets next year, will I get first dibs on all star game tickets?

    Thanks

  14. Rebecca August 19th, 2007 at 12:36 pm

The Angels worry me in the playoffs, like a lot of people are saying. This isn’t to say, however, that Boston wouldn’t worry me–they have a habit of getting into our ‘pen. (Payback for 2004 would be sooo sweet, though).

The only team I wouldn’t worry about facing is a team from the AL central. We more or less own the AL Central this year. (Of course, it shouldn’t be taken for granted, AL Central teams beat us last year, and I think the year before?)

  15. Rebecca August 19th, 2007 at 12:38 pm

Ian–doubt it. They’re selling for $800+, and that includes the bleachers.

  16. Drew August 19th, 2007 at 12:39 pm

Pete, great piece today on Posada. And thanks for reminding people of what a jerk Froemming is. There seems to be revisionist history concerning him.

I’ve talked about it this year
    http://mypinstripes.blogspot.c.....0the%20Ump

  17. Kat August 19th, 2007 at 12:43 pm

Ian, I am hoping so – I have had a season ticket set for the past few years. When playoffs come around, season ticket holders get first dibs – I hope it’s the same with the all-star game.

  18. E-ROC August 19th, 2007 at 12:45 pm

I’m glad that Jeter is finally getting a day off. He has taken a beating lately and has showed in his ABs.

Has Damon cleared waivers? He has questioned his future again. Quite annoying!

I think speed has been rated correctly, IMO. The way you prevent speed from making impact is making your pitches and having quality defense. The thing about speed is that it will make the other team make plays and errors could happen.

  19. SJ44 August 19th, 2007 at 12:46 pm

How did the “speed hurt the Red Sox”? They scored 10 unanswered runs and flushed away a 5 run lead.

Speed doesn’t help you when you fall behind. You need to hit HR’s and extra base hits. The Angels speed hasn’t hurt the Red Sox at all.

If not for another Eric Gagne implosion, they would be 0-3 this weekend at Fenway.

Their ace gave up 6 runs in the first inning and got outpitched by a kid making his first ML appearance. Their top two bullpen guys blew a 3 run lead and only Gagne kept them from losing that game.

Last night, they blew a 5 run lead and got killed. So, I have a hard time understanding where their “speed” has hurt the Red Sox. The Red Sox have now won 5 of 6 at Fenway against them and 3 of their last 4.

If their speed has “hurt” the Red Sox, it certainly hasn’t hurt the Red Sox from beating them most of the time.

  20. Kat August 19th, 2007 at 12:46 pm

Ian, I just looked it up on yankees.com:

If I purchase a 2008 Ticket Licensee Plan will I have an option for 2008 All-Star Game Tickets?

At this time, we have no information about 2008 All-Star Game Ticket options for any new or existing Ticket Licenses Plan. As soon as we have established our 2008 All-Star Game Terms and Conditions, this information will be made available on-line at http://www.yankees.com.

  21. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Tim McCarver oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 19th, 2007 at 12:51 pm

how is it the offenses fault that they scored 10 thats the pitching not the offense that makes no sense

  22. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Tim McCarver oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 19th, 2007 at 12:52 pm

    thank you eroc!

  23. TKinDC August 19th, 2007 at 12:52 pm

Did anyone see Ortiz stand there for a 5 count after he hit the grand slam? It is amazing to me that he doesn’t get more balls in the middle of the back considering the way he shows up opposing pitchers.

It would be great to win 3/4 from the kitties today. I hope Wanger has ironed out his control issues and has a gem!

  24. Rebecca August 19th, 2007 at 12:53 pm

    TKinDC–Yea, I saw that.

If Clemens had been pitching, he soooo would have been plunked!

  25. SJ44 August 19th, 2007 at 12:55 pm

How many runs did they score in the last 4 innings of the game last night? Zero.

Where did their speed hurt the Red Sox in this series? They didn’t steal any bases last night, didn’t hit at all the last 4 innings of the game, and, aside from a couple of innings in that series, have posed no offense threat to the Red Sox.

They have been scrambling to score runs all season. Even their “genius manager” admits his offense is the weakest its been in years.

Their speed hasn’t helped their offense at all. They run because they have to. Its the only way they can get guys into position for Vlad to drive them in. They are one of the worst offensive teams in the league. They are Vlad, Figgins and Cabrera. Everyone else is average at best.

  26. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Tim McCarver oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 19th, 2007 at 12:55 pm

tkindc: him and manny stand there like theyve never seen a hr before it makes me sick if i were a pitcher id be suspended after red sox game i pitch

  27. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Tim McCarver oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 19th, 2007 at 12:57 pm

THEY SCORED 5!!! if you score 5 then its up to the pitching to step up 5 is plenty to win a game with a decent pitching staff

  28. Fear Factor August 19th, 2007 at 12:57 pm

Jeremy “The Yankee Stopper” Bonderman vs. The New York Yankees on October 7, 2006:

  29. E-ROC August 19th, 2007 at 12:57 pm

TKinDC–I saw that too. Nobody from the Angels did anything except for Weaver, but that was only a glare. They should send a message in today’s game, but I doubt that’ll happen.

  30. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Tim McCarver oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 19th, 2007 at 12:58 pm

haha smith is back with another fake name. THAT IS PATHETIC

  31. Rebecca August 19th, 2007 at 12:59 pm

Fear Factor: Out of curiosity, how do you come up with your pitching lines?

  32. Bob Michaels August 19th, 2007 at 1:01 pm

John 24.Phillips is ok despite the lack of power as long as he hits line drives.Would like to see Duncan get more of a shot vs lefties.

  33. E-ROC August 19th, 2007 at 1:02 pm

I finally get to watch a Yankee game in over a MONTH. There is a God.

Michael Kay looks like Curt Schilling. Yikes!

  34. SJ44 August 19th, 2007 at 1:03 pm

So, if you score 5 runs, at Fenway Park, in the first 4 innings of a game, that’s supposed be it?

Sure, teams never come back from 5 runs down at Fenway.

Come on, they did nothing offensively the rest of the game. The Red Sox average 6.5 runs a game at home.

So, if they score 5 in Fenway, if you go by averages, that’s a loss.

Their offense isn’t any good. If you don’t walk them, and throw strikes, you ground it to a halt.

  35. Bob Michaels August 19th, 2007 at 1:03 pm

This is a must game for the Bombers, then again i seem to always say that.

  36. E-ROC August 19th, 2007 at 1:05 pm

It’s good to know that Farnsdearth is becoming more of a pitcher instead of a thrower.

  37. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Tim McCarver oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 19th, 2007 at 1:08 pm

so your point is that speed doesnt matter because the angels cant beat the sox? If your point is that the angels suck against the sox i agree. if you say socioa isnt a genius i agree. but if youre saying that speed is overrated you are so very wrong. speed breaks up the other teams concentration with speed you can make things happen. suddenly a gapper shot with a man on first is a run instead of a man on second and third. there are little things that make speed so valuable and so dangerous

  38. Big Johnson August 19th, 2007 at 1:09 pm

“I think Seattle can overtake the Angels. Better offense, deeper bullpen, and their starters do just enough to win games.”

Sorry SJ, you got this one wrong. Seattle is winning despite their starters. They aren’t doing ‘just enough.’ Their bats are doing ‘just enough.’

I saw a stat recently showing just one victory for their starters since the break. That number has gone up of late.

They are playing terrific baseball offensively. They would exit the playoffs very very quickly without much work for putz with that starting staff, it really is bottom tier.

They are clubbing their way to victory at the moment, something I find extremely unlikely to be successful going forward. Certainly not in the playoffs.

I think they are the most likely team to fall out of this race. They simply don’t have the pitching.

    BJ

  39. Rebecca August 19th, 2007 at 1:11 pm

Nice way to start a game!

  40. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Tim McCarver oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 19th, 2007 at 1:11 pm

was anyone else disgusted by how much they were slurping maybin on fox?

  41. CB August 19th, 2007 at 1:15 pm

A key for today’s game will be how Betemit plays at short. He hasn’t played there much over the past couple of seasons and he looks very large for the position now.

I wonder what his range is like there (no commnets on Jeter’s lack of range to his left please…)

With Wang going there could be a lot of ground balls going in Betemit’s direction.

If he looks ok there that would be a huge help. Jeter needs to rest and the one advantage of Cairo over Betemit was perhpas shortstop defense.

  42. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Tim McCarver oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 19th, 2007 at 1:15 pm

    BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  43. Rebecca August 19th, 2007 at 1:16 pm

Would be a bit happier if the outs were ground outs, but I’ll take the outs any way I can get.

  44. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Tim McCarver oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 19th, 2007 at 1:16 pm

cb: i like betemits arm better than cairos

  45. E-ROC August 19th, 2007 at 1:18 pm

I wonder how happy Damon was when he noticed his name in the lineup.

  46. Mel Allen August 19th, 2007 at 1:18 pm

Hi, everybody! It’s hard to type as I roll over in my grave, but I wanted to ask if you agree that the New York Yankees deserve a much better play-by-play man than John Sterling.

  47. Drew August 19th, 2007 at 1:18 pm

    “Jeremy “The Yankee Stopperâ€? Bonderman”

2-4, 5.06 what stats are you looking at?

  48. CB August 19th, 2007 at 1:19 pm

    Boston Yankee,

I don’t disagree on the arm – its really a matter of range and recent experience. He hasn’t played there much and that’s a key spot with Wang pitching. Right handed hitter who wind up trying to pull wang hit balls to short or in the whole very frequently.

  49. Rebecca August 19th, 2007 at 1:20 pm

I’m apparently the only person in the world that doesn’t hate John Sterling.

  50. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Tim McCarver oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 19th, 2007 at 1:20 pm

  58. Pepper Brooks August 19th, 2007 at 1:24 pm

Funny how the Boston is to the Angels the way that the Angels are to the Yankees.

  59. TKinDC August 19th, 2007 at 1:24 pm

    CB –

I was thinking the same thing about Betemit. Joe Torre was saying that he needs to shed some weight to be effective as a middle infielder. I think he is supposed to have good hands though.

It is good to have a flexible guy with some pop in his bat to come in for Jeter though. An upgrade over Cairo, who is a gamer, but limited offensively.

  60. Rebecca August 19th, 2007 at 1:25 pm

    Boston Yankee: Figures! =D

  61. Rebecca August 19th, 2007 at 1:26 pm

  66. TKinDC August 19th, 2007 at 1:29 pm

Wang+Early Lead is a great combination. He can be more aggressive and the hitters won’t be as likely to lay off the sinker.

    Let’s get more!!!

  67. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Tim McCarver oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 19th, 2007 at 1:29 pm

  68. Rebecca August 19th, 2007 at 1:29 pm

Bah, we should have had more than one run, but one run is still better than none.

  69. E-ROC August 19th, 2007 at 1:30 pm

At least we got one run.

  70. sweeny murti August 19th, 2007 at 1:30 pm

  72. Mel Allen August 19th, 2007 at 1:31 pm

Part of what drives me nuts about Sterling – besides the fact that he’s John Sterling – is the non-stop ads on Yankees’ radio broadcasts. It’s downright obnoxious. By the way, everybody, the first pitch of today’s game was brought to you by RoadRunner High Speed Internet.

  74. Pepper Brooks August 19th, 2007 at 1:33 pm

Boston Yankee – I think that you should just change the names in parenthesis to just Tim McCarver. All others are tollerable to some extent, but McCarver is the worst.

My dad knows MLB umpire Marty Barrett and has said that the umpires cannot stand McCarver. Their comment was” as a former catcher, he knows less about the strike zone than he does about baseball.” Thought that was funny.

  75. . August 19th, 2007 at 1:33 pm

zero ground balls for wAng so far

  76. sweeny murti August 19th, 2007 at 1:33 pm

  79. Shdw August 19th, 2007 at 1:35 pm

He may have 0 ground balls but he’s thrown 17 of his 21 pitches for strikes and faced the minimum number of batters

  80. sweeny murti August 19th, 2007 at 1:36 pm

Suzyn’s announcment of the Clemens resigning is still the greatest piece of radio of 2007

  85. Mel Allen August 19th, 2007 at 1:38 pm

Sweeny, the greatest radio announcement of all time would be Clemens announcing Waldman’s resigning.

By the way, Boston Yankee, I played that clip of Scary Suzyn and my children became afraid and ran out of the room.

  86. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Tim McCarver oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 19th, 2007 at 1:39 pm

  87. Rebecca August 19th, 2007 at 1:40 pm

Wang doesn’t look too bad so far–the balls that were hit weren’t hit hard, and Jeter would have probably made the play that Betemit couldn’t.

Hope for some more ground balls, but he needed to post a goose egg and he did. I’ll take it.

  88. sweeny murti August 19th, 2007 at 1:40 pm

Nice. That sinker he just threw to Inge will never produce a ground ball.

Boston Yankee: Just be glad it’s not me. I’ve been told I sound like a wounded banshee with a wounded puppy!

  90. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Tim McCarver oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 19th, 2007 at 1:42 pm

    Rebecca: THATS NOT TRUE!

  91. sweeny murti August 19th, 2007 at 1:42 pm

Mel being the great announcer that you are. What kind of voice wouyld you use to announce Suzyn’s retirement.

  92. Rebecca August 19th, 2007 at 1:43 pm

Boston Yankee: But you haven’t actually heard me, have you?

  93. Mel Allen August 19th, 2007 at 1:44 pm

Sweeny, if Sterling and Waldman would ride off into the sunset together, I’d devote an entire show of This Week in Baseball to it. How about that?

  94. sweeny murti August 19th, 2007 at 1:44 pm

Looks like we missed our chance. Now get ready for 6 innings of shutout ball. What a difference a inning makes now evrythin is down and the velocity is up.

  95. Rebecca August 19th, 2007 at 1:46 pm

Four pitch walk to Andy Phillips. Totally gonna come back and bite Bonderman in the 4$$. I hope.

  96. E-ROC August 19th, 2007 at 1:46 pm

    Shocking! Phillips took a walk.

  97. TKinDC August 19th, 2007 at 1:47 pm

Missed our chance? Since when is Bonderman an elite pitcher? He already has a high pitch count early in the game.

  98. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Tim McCarver oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 19th, 2007 at 1:47 pm

no but it cant be true IT CANT

  99. sweeny murti August 19th, 2007 at 1:48 pm

Sounds good. Would you have them actually ride in the back seat of a convertible out of Yankee stadium? You would have to do that with out the fans in the seat for fear of objects bing hoisted in the direction of the vehicle.

  100. Rebecca August 19th, 2007 at 1:49 pm

    Yep, those two out walks…

(When I went to the game against the Royals on the 5th, they gave a two out walk to Posada, and I turned to my brother and joked ‘those two out walks always come back to bite you’, and the Yanks then scored two or three runs that inning.)

  101. EY August 19th, 2007 at 1:49 pm

LOL Bonderman has no control today.

  102. Mel Allen August 19th, 2007 at 1:49 pm

I’d actually have them ride out of the stadium in a 1976 Ford Pinto with several cars following right on their bumper. Is that wrong?

  103. sweeny murti August 19th, 2007 at 1:49 pm

    No I dont mean flowers.

  104. CB August 19th, 2007 at 1:51 pm

The key to beating the tigers the way they are right now is patience.

Their bullpen is awful. Making the starter work and getting to their pen early is the most direct way of beating the tigers.

The yankees have done that very effectively this series. That was one of the things that made Mussina’s performance particularly disappointing in the opening game. They got Verlander out of the game early but never had a good chance to win because they were behind so quickly.

  105. Rebecca August 19th, 2007 at 1:51 pm

Aww, darn. I wonder what bonderman’s pitch count is?

  106. sweeny murti August 19th, 2007 at 1:51 pm

But would you have fans in the seats? if you would. Crying? Laughing? Cheering?

  107. Shdw August 19th, 2007 at 1:52 pm

    Bonderman is at 43 pitches

  108. ace August 19th, 2007 at 1:52 pm

  109. sweeny murti August 19th, 2007 at 1:53 pm

I wish not to see that swing from Melky again.

  110. Rebecca August 19th, 2007 at 1:53 pm

20 pitches an inning? At this rate he’ll be gone by the fifth. Just have to hope it lasts.

  111. sweeny murti August 19th, 2007 at 1:55 pm

Maybin needs to get schooled here in his last day at the Stadium. I scense to much confidence there.

  112. Shdw August 19th, 2007 at 1:55 pm

What happened to Wan since last year? He almost never got strikeouts when he first started and now he seems to get 4+ every game.

  113. Shdw August 19th, 2007 at 1:55 pm

What happened to Wang since last year? He almost never got strikeouts when he first started and now he seems to get 4+ every game.

  114. sweeny murti August 19th, 2007 at 1:56 pm

    Anybody watching Yes?

  115. Rebecca August 19th, 2007 at 1:56 pm

He’s got a nail issue, but I’m not sure what it is or how it affects him.

  116. sweeny murti August 19th, 2007 at 1:58 pm

Do you ever understand what Al Leiter is saying when he goes into pitching puysics?

  117. Rebecca August 19th, 2007 at 1:58 pm

    Nope.

  118. CB August 19th, 2007 at 1:58 pm

    Shdw,

He developed his slider a great deal this year. It’s become the pitch he gets his strikeouts on.

One of the things I appreciate about Wang is how is still is trying to get better even after winning so many games last year.

I think he’ll eventually become an effective four pitch pitcher. The sinker will be his base but the slider has already gotten better. His change is still a work in progress but I think he’ll improve it.

  119. sweeny murti August 19th, 2007 at 1:59 pm

I hope Sheff doesnt exact revenge here for all the boos

  120. Michael August 19th, 2007 at 1:59 pm

THe Yankees didn’t exactly light up the Tigers pen, only scoring meaningless runs. Runnin up Bonderman’s pitch coun without breaking through doesn’t excite me.

  121. E-ROC August 19th, 2007 at 2:00 pm

I’m watching on the Yes Network, courtesy of AFN (Armed Forces Network)

  122. sweeny murti August 19th, 2007 at 2:01 pm

I allways fealt that when Sheff has something else on his mind besides pure baseball like “revenge” or “I’ll show them” what they’re missing he dosent do well.

  123. sweeny murti August 19th, 2007 at 2:03 pm

I separated from the Air Force in Feb ’06, but my wife is still in the Air Force. We’re in Turkey.

  128. Quan August 19th, 2007 at 2:04 pm

I think the presence of Melky will help the Yanks beat the Angels. That team has exploited the Yanks weak defense in C in the past when they had Bernie and then Johnny out there. We saw in the last series the power of Melk; his rocket arm discourages taking extra bases and that shuts down their offense. So yes, they’ve had trouble with the Angels in the past, but I think the addition of Melky will put them over the top.

  129. CB August 19th, 2007 at 2:04 pm

Look up the statistics for the Tigers pen this year.

They are atrocious. They have one of the worst pens in the game and that is the primary reason the Tigers haven’t run away with the division.

When you are facing a shut down pitcher like Verlander the best thing you can do is to get him out of the game quickly and take it from there. If you can get Verlander out of the game in the sixth it’s “success” and you should win that game.

  130. Swami August 19th, 2007 at 2:05 pm

Good pitchers don’t stay with the same routine for long and become predictable. All hitters can be pitched to and all pitchers can be hit. A back and forth game.

  131. sweeny murti August 19th, 2007 at 2:05 pm

Arod hasnt done that thing in a while.

  141. Mel Allen August 19th, 2007 at 2:09 pm

Yes, Eroc, thanks to you and your wife. Speaking of Turkey, how about that John Sterling?

  142. Michael August 19th, 2007 at 2:10 pm

    The Bobmbers are mini-ballin’.

I didn’t say I don’t want to chase Bonderman. I’d just like to do it with a barrage of runs.

  143. CB August 19th, 2007 at 2:10 pm

Great point on melky. The angels have historically taken extra bases on the yankee outfielders at will. They especially have embarrassed Damon (and bernie before him).

Another major challenge for the yankees in tomorrow’s game will be how Hughes handles the angels running game.

Phil’s has a lot of strengths but holding runners isn’t one of them. As a by product of his sheer dominance in the minors he hasn’t had to deal with many base runners nor develop his skills holding runners.

When the angles get baserunners on they will run aggressively on phil tomorrow. His command has to be better as he can’t walk hitters.

  144. Pepper Brooks August 19th, 2007 at 2:10 pm

Actually, Leiter is one of the few who can explain pitching mechanics, especially gripping the ball well.

Jeff Brantley, formerly of Baseball Tonight, is probably the best at explaining pitching mechanics, ball grip, tendencies, etc.

  145. Rebecca August 19th, 2007 at 2:11 pm

sweeny murti: not likely to do it today, Robinson’s day game stats are pretty awful.

  146. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Tim McCarver oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 19th, 2007 at 2:11 pm

i love it when the yanks play small ball

  147. Shdw August 19th, 2007 at 2:12 pm

Bonderman got out of that with 16 pitches. But he’s still at 59 already throught 3.

  148. Global Warming August 19th, 2007 at 2:13 pm

This is a must win today folks.

Winning today gives the Yankees the luxury of losing 2 of 3 against the mighty Angels and not feeling too bad about it.

I see Joba for 2 today.

  149. Michael August 19th, 2007 at 2:14 pm

I love it when the Yanks pulle Ear Weaver specials. A single, a walk, and a three-run bomb. But I’ll take the early lead any way we can get it. But, I suspect it is going to take more than 2 or 3 today.

  150. Pepper Brooks August 19th, 2007 at 2:15 pm

Yanks will take 2 of 3 from the Angels.

  151. sweeny murti August 19th, 2007 at 2:15 pm

In Boston. Angels 1 Sox 0 with 2 on and nobody out but fear not they’ll blow the lead soon.

  152. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Tim McCarver oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 19th, 2007 at 2:16 pm

    i trust al

  153. CB August 19th, 2007 at 2:16 pm

Agreed that this is a critical win. With Bonderman’s pitch count so high already and a lead in hand they have to win this game.

I disagree on Joba. If they need him they should use him. However, I’m hoping Wang can give them at least 7 strong innings.

Phil hasn’t been going deep into games and I’d like them to have Joba available tomorrow.

They don’t have the luxury of losing 2 of 3 to the angels.

  154. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Tim McCarver oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 19th, 2007 at 2:17 pm

    Nice pick by Cano.

Baseball Tonight is somewhat of a joke. I like Eduardo Perez, Tim Kurkjin(pardon the spelling; LMAO, I laugh every time his voice squeaks. It’s just hilarious), and Buster Olney. Harold Reynolds made things exciting and interesting. His presence is obviously missed.

    Jeff Brantley is cool, too.

  174. Ron August 19th, 2007 at 2:24 pm

Sorry, I meant playing Damon in the outfield at all.

Okay, good job Wang. Keep battling out there, and find that sinker.

  175. Shdw August 19th, 2007 at 2:24 pm

He did it but there were way too many balls in that inning. He was pitching them too high in the zone when they weren’t too low.

  176. Global Warming August 19th, 2007 at 2:24 pm

Agree with you here. I use to find myself watching Baseball Tonight all the time back when it was consistently Reyonlds, Ravich, etc.

  178. sweeny murti August 19th, 2007 at 2:24 pm

How does Inge strike out on a slider after only seeing slider outside off the plate in the whole AB. If I was his manager I would ride him hard for that AB.

  179. Ron August 19th, 2007 at 2:25 pm

Yeah, Inge saw a ton of sliders there, and still chased the last one.

  180. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Tim McCarver oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 19th, 2007 at 2:25 pm

its kurkjian i believe. theyre showing ortix just stand there. he should get nailed today

  181. CB August 19th, 2007 at 2:26 pm

Given the number of sliders Wang’s throwing today and how inconsistent his sinker has been recently I really think that nail problem is really bothering him much more than the Yankees are letting on.

He puts a great deal of pressure on the ball with that finger when throwing the sinker and I can’t imagine how he can do that effectively if his finger is as bad as has been described.

That’s the kind of injury that only gets better with months of rest because the nail has to grow back entirely from its base.

  182. Viper August 19th, 2007 at 2:27 pm

Damon’s lack of a strong arm is so often overrated and doesn’t have much of an afect on whether this team wins or loses.

Perhaps you guys should look at history and realize that Damon won a ring with the same arm he has now (with Manny in LF, no less) and Bernie Williams won four rings with the Yanks and his arm wasn’t much better than Damon.

  183. Ron August 19th, 2007 at 2:28 pm

CB, I might agree with you, but Wang was pitching some of his best baseball while that nail looked just gruesome. The near perfecto vs. Seattle, the game against the Mets…his nail was a mess then too.

  184. Rebecca August 19th, 2007 at 2:28 pm

Right, so totally not the way to have a big inning…

  185. sweeny murti August 19th, 2007 at 2:29 pm

  192. S.o.S.27 August 19th, 2007 at 2:31 pm

I really dont like that we havnt blown this game open.We need to capitalize on the weak pitching of bonderman.

It seems like Betimet always gets out on strike outs.

    Need this win today.

  193. In the Thicke Of it August 19th, 2007 at 2:31 pm

LAA taking care of business for us so far….Wanger making it through…and Tavarez is a bum….still looking good to pull within 4 by the end of the day AND Seattle winning too, puts them only 3.5 back of BoSox for the Wild Card….as I am certain the Yankees will with the division, I am rooting for Seattle, Detroit ( but with us taking care of them multiple times, THEY could be out of it ) Cleveland and Minnesota to keep the heat on the Red Sox and bump them totally out of the Post Season…..so Go Yankees AND Go everyone else in the AL except Boston !!! LOL !

  194. In the Thicke Of it August 19th, 2007 at 2:33 pm

S.o.S.27 ….I noticed that too, doesn’t matter much with nobody on base, but he has shaped into a bit of an ALL or NOTHING hitter, kinda like Duncan, don’t ya think ?

  195. Ron August 19th, 2007 at 2:33 pm

Seattle is going to collapse in September. Their overall team mediocrity will catch up to them.

  196. CB August 19th, 2007 at 2:33 pm

    Ron,

Good point. However, I’m wondering if the nail may have gotten worse after they initially stabilized it.

That’s the kind of injury that is just going to get worse with more innings pitched/ more times he throws the sinker.

That’s why I think maybe he’s having the problem now as the season’s gone on.

I don’t think that’s the only reason as he loses his arm slot at times. But I do think it has to be hurting him and it has gotten worse with use.

Unfortunately, with the staff in such disarray and being so far back, they can’t afford to rest him for as long as needed.

  197. Global Warming August 19th, 2007 at 2:33 pm

“Bernie Williams won four rings with the Yanks and his arm wasn’t much better than Damon.”

Bernie didn’t have a Canon back in the 90′s but it was nowhere near as bad as Damons.

    Your thinking of 02-05 Bernie.

  198. Viper August 19th, 2007 at 2:34 pm

_Using rings to judge a baseball player is nothing short of idiocy. Craig Counsell has two world series rings. Craig Counsell is not a particularly good baseball player._

Once again, Ron, you’ve gone off the deep end.

Damon and Bernie were both great players and cornerstones of those WS teams. Can’t say the same thing about Counsell.

C’mon, you have to be smarter than that to make such a moronic comparison.

Perhaps you should start naming players who won rings because of their arms if you have such a strong argument.

  199. sweeny murti August 19th, 2007 at 2:34 pm

  202. Wouter August 19th, 2007 at 2:36 pm

    Hey guys,

nothing better than coming home from a weekend with the soccer team to see the Yanks have taken the last 2 from the Tigers, Joba is filthy as always, and Mo is back to his usual self.
Wang still doesn’t seem in top form, what happened to the sinker?

  203. yanksrule57 August 19th, 2007 at 2:36 pm

I grew up listening to Rizzuto, Messer and White on the Yankee broadcasts and was in the Navy for 24 years so I missed the whole changeover in Yankee announcers (mid 90′s I guess). John Sterling is ok as an announcer, but he seems to be a pompous guy, very full of himself. Michael Kay is tolerable and willing to criticize the team when it is due. This is better than many announcers across the country who are shameless homers. Don’t believe me listen to a White Sox, Angels, or Twins broadcast sometime. Of the current broadcasters I really like Ken Singleton and of course Bobby M.

  204. S.o.S.27 August 19th, 2007 at 2:36 pm

Betimet came in with a good on base percentage vs. his avg.
He just is not showing that at this time. Needs to find his groove again or there would have been no point in getting rid of cairo. Having power is useless if you cant hit the ball.

  205. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Tim McCarver oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 19th, 2007 at 2:36 pm

yea but rebecca come on with one out the inning isnt over!

  206. ace August 19th, 2007 at 2:36 pm

I hate asking this much out of our pitching for 3 games straight

  207. mel August 19th, 2007 at 2:37 pm

    C’mon Wang!

  208. CA Yanks Fan August 19th, 2007 at 2:38 pm

Wanger might have a little bit of a dead arm too. His velocity’s been down several mph recently.

  209. Ron August 19th, 2007 at 2:38 pm

Viper, that was an extreme example. But it served to prove my point. That Damon and Bernie’s weak arms failed to stop their teams from winning world series does not mean anything. It’s like arguing that Miguel Cairo playing like crap at 1st while the Yankees were winning means that Cairo shouldn’t have been handed a pink slip. It’s an erroneous correlation, not causation.

Seven hits against Wang. How the hell did this happen?

  210. Stuart August 19th, 2007 at 2:38 pm

Wang has not been a #1 starter lately.. I am not sure what is up with him…

    Enough with the nail stuff

  211. CB August 19th, 2007 at 2:40 pm

    Viper,

Your point on outfield arms overall is a valid one. But no one was saying that the issue of outfield arms was the be all and end all of winning or losing.

Obviously Bernie and Damon have won many, many more games for their respective teams than they’ve contributed to losing.

However, in some match ups defense/ outfield arms are more of an issue than in others.

With a lumbering team like the old Bash Brother Oakland A’s it wouldn’t be much of an issue.

But with a team like the angels that tries to play a pressure speed game it absolutely is a factor. And the angles have killed the yankees going first to third and second to home very aggressively in the recent past.

It’s an issue of the match up with the Angels not a gross generalization.

  212. Ron August 19th, 2007 at 2:41 pm

Velocity doesn’t have anything to do with it. Wang relies primarily on location. His velocity makes him a little harder to hit, but he can win with a good sinker at 91-92 as well as one at 94-95. Especially with the improved slider.

Problem is that he’s got no bite on the sinker right now, and he’s getting hit.

  213. Viper August 19th, 2007 at 2:41 pm

_Bernie didn’t have a Canon back in the 90’s but it was nowhere near as bad as Damons.

    Your thinking of 02-05 Bernie._

No, I’m not. Bernie never had a good arm, but it is true that it got even worse when he had recurring shoulder problems in the latter stages of his career.

Opposing teams took extra bases on Bernie all the time.

  214. Rebecca August 19th, 2007 at 2:42 pm

    WTF was that?

  215. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Tim McCarver oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 19th, 2007 at 2:42 pm

    HOW DOES THAT HAPPEN!

  216. sweeny murti August 19th, 2007 at 2:43 pm

That was a nice sinker to second base… Now a balk… Wang loosin focus here.

  217. S.o.S.27 August 19th, 2007 at 2:43 pm

Leiter was saying that Wang should just remove his nail, but wang is confortable with it. Its hard to believe that he is confortable with it. I think its time for him to do that because we cant afford him to be less than his best once playoffs start. He is our ace pitcher only with his strong sinker.

Speed does disrupt pitchers. Its not a bad thing to have.

  218. Ron August 19th, 2007 at 2:44 pm

    DRAMA IN BOSTON

  225. Ron August 19th, 2007 at 2:46 pm

Bernie Williams never had the instincts to play center field. He was a track star that could also hit baseballs. That’s part of the reason he was never a stolen base threat despite being able to run well. Melky has terrific instincts, and takes much better routes. When Bernie lost his speed, his overall game collapsed. He hit into a crapload of DPs, had countless catchable balls go over his head, and couldn’t get to balls fast enough to compensate for his below-average arm.

  226. Rebecca August 19th, 2007 at 2:47 pm

Okay, now our lack of inning has really come back to bite us.

    Bloody @#%@#%

  227. Rebecca August 19th, 2007 at 2:48 pm

    What’s going on in Boston?

  228. John-24 August 19th, 2007 at 2:48 pm

Of course I get on Phillips and he actually gets a walk and a hit in his first two ab’s. I still think Shelley should be the first choice against lefties though.

  229. Ron August 19th, 2007 at 2:48 pm

Finally gets a grounder and A-Rod isn’t ready for it. Terrific.

I have zero confidence in Wang at this point. And that really scares me.

  230. Mel Allen August 19th, 2007 at 2:49 pm

Yanksrule57, I didn’t like Ken Singleton at first, but he’s really grown on me. I enjoy listening to him whenever he’s on now. One suggestion for him, though, lose the line about the sun being 62 million miles away and causing so much havoc on Earth. That was funny… the first 62 million times.

  231. Wouter August 19th, 2007 at 2:49 pm

    Drama in Boston? What happened?

  232. sweeny murti August 19th, 2007 at 2:49 pm

  233. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Tim McCarver oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 19th, 2007 at 2:49 pm

freddi kruegger drilled cabrera and since he has a reputation OC didnt take kindly to that and walked halfway to the mound but was escorted to first base. warnings have been issued

  234. Rebecca August 19th, 2007 at 2:49 pm

    WHAT THE HELL?!

  235. kasey Anderson August 19th, 2007 at 2:49 pm

nine guys on base in two innings. guys running on him. a balk. gave back a two-run lead. yep, wang is reeeaaaallllly back on his game.

at what point is it okay to criticize god’s gift to pitching?

  236. Viper August 19th, 2007 at 2:49 pm

    CB,

Didn’t say the lack of a strong arm isn’t a factor – just often overrated.

Damon rarely plays CF anymore and doesn’t play RF.

Teams don’t go from first-to-third on a base hit to LF very often – even against a weak arm. CF and RF is a different story.

  237. Ron August 19th, 2007 at 2:49 pm

    Pathetic Wang. Absolutely pathetic.

  238. SJ44 August 19th, 2007 at 2:50 pm

Staying too long with Wang again. He is missing the target on every pitch.

The bullpen is rested. No reason to leave him out there when he has nothing.

What’s worse are the mental breakdowns. The balk and the inability to look runners off. That tells me he has no confidence in his stuff because he never has mental breakdowns on the mound.

They are staying too long with him today and it may come back to bite them in the butt.

  239. Harlan August 19th, 2007 at 2:50 pm

Wang really looked rattled with a man on third. Man, I wish they would give him some time and just let this fingernail injury heal.

I wonder if I misheard, but do the problems with the fingernail stem from his quitting smoking and then chewing on his nails?

  240. Brandon August 19th, 2007 at 2:50 pm

Ryan Raburn taking a page out of Andy Phillips’s book.

  259. CB August 19th, 2007 at 2:54 pm

The nail problem was caused by the pressure wang puts on the ball with that finger when he throws his sinker.

  264. kasey Anderson August 19th, 2007 at 2:54 pm

viper, you’re right. wang’s a monster out there. what was i thinking? he’s dominant. he’s the ace. he’s holding leads, keeping guys off base, keeping it together mentally.

i mean, it’s not like he gave up 8 runs in two innings a couple of starts ago and then gave up 5runs his following start, then gave away a lead today.

how dare i criticize cy wang. he’s incredible. the best there is. absolutely nothing wrong with his performace.

  265. Stuart August 19th, 2007 at 2:54 pm

I am amazed on radio and TV the announcers do not call Wang out. He has not pitched well in about 5 starts…

today he is a strikeout pitcher that is not his game.. he pitched much better before this slump…

Bonderman is hanging on by a thread and is leading, amazing………….

  266. hh August 19th, 2007 at 2:54 pm

kasey you are negative about everything therefore when you say something intelligient ist is discounted because of your total negativity…

  271. SJ44 August 19th, 2007 at 2:56 pm

It has to be his last inning. The physical mistakes are one thing. The mental mistakes are another.

No logical reason to meltdown on the mound and that’s precisely what he did that inning.

Its August and I don’t care who it is, that’s unacceptable.

Not what you are looking for from your ace.

    Third straight awful outing.

Get him out, put in Edwar for two and hope the offense decides to stop swinging at balls in the dirt.

Clearly, he doesn’t trust his stuff. Whether its a slump, an injury, or a combination of the two, its hurting the team right now.

Can’t leave him out there to hurt them any longer. Call it a day and hope the bullpen can get the job done.

  272. Dimitri August 19th, 2007 at 2:56 pm

Is it just me or did the yankees beat themselves in that inning?

  273. E-ROC August 19th, 2007 at 2:56 pm

Okay I get the point you guys are trying to paint but are you talking about Bernie in 96-2001 or Bernie post 02? The prior was a brilliant fielder and had an average(not Damonlike) arm. Not that Gold Gloves are the end all of defense measurement but he won 4 of them in the 90′s. Got to count for something.

Its not like we arent good fans for knockig Wang. I love Wang but when you pitch the way he has pitched as of late you deserve some criticism.

  293. Ron August 19th, 2007 at 3:02 pm

GW, I’m talking about Bernie over the entirety of his career. He was built like a track star. Footspeed was an enormous part of his game, including his defensive abilities. He never had good instincts in the outfield, and when he aged, losing both batspeed and footspeed, his game imploded.

It’s not really relevant to the argument with Damon, whose lack of arm is secondary in my mind to his complete lack of power.

  294. Brandon August 19th, 2007 at 3:02 pm

man Maybin seriously is not ready for the Big Leagues great talent but it’s to early

  301. randy l August 19th, 2007 at 3:04 pm

this yankee team only plays with a sense of urgency when it’s up against the wall. wang has runners on first and second in a good double play situation and he lets the runners move up a base. cano doesn’t even bother to cover second on the double steal.
earlier this week matsui doesn’t run hard and the outfielder drops his flyball. matsui ends up on first.
i know joe likes to emphasize relaxing ,but this team takes it way too far.

  302. mel August 19th, 2007 at 3:04 pm

  303. Brandon August 19th, 2007 at 3:05 pm

  314. PBL August 19th, 2007 at 3:07 pm

Not sure how much Wang’s fingernail is bothering him, I also wonder how much the departure of mike myers has affected him. His slump has followed myers departure and for a guy who is still fairly new to the country maybe losing his best friend has had an effect on him. I think he will be fine though, he was good before he knew myers and im sure the training staff is on top of his fingernail. Guys go through slumps and outside of the one bad outing, he hasnt even been pitching that badly for a guy who is supposedly falling apart.

  315. sweeny murti August 19th, 2007 at 3:07 pm

Maybe you’ve heard this before but this it’s a long season.

Players struggle – even the ace of your rotation or the likely AL MVP. I’m not going to pile on the guy because he’s struggling since he’s been this team’s best pitcher over the last couple of years.

Your problem is that you have doomsday scenarios for EVERYTHING and people get tired of reading that garbage. It’s moronic and so often a gross overreaction.

My guess is your response to that is “people should just ignore my comments.

Well, guess what? People don’t have to ignore your comments and have the right to call you out anytime they want.

We all know the rules in a forum like this and you have to take the heat if you say stupid things.

  317. keithny August 19th, 2007 at 3:08 pm

hmm why is wang still in?

  318. Ron August 19th, 2007 at 3:08 pm

    PULL HIM!

  319. Stuart August 19th, 2007 at 3:08 pm

rabelo and rayburn with 5 hits and Rayburn gave a AB away.

    take him out…….

    Bring in Edwar..

  320. SJ44 August 19th, 2007 at 3:08 pm

He hit hard, which is all you can ask.

First guess and not a second guess. IMO, its a mistake having Wang pitch the 6th.

As I type this, the backup catcher is now 3-3.

Its a mistake starting Wang this inning and its a bigger mistake keeping him out there. They have to realize he doesn’t have it today.

  321. Ron August 19th, 2007 at 3:09 pm

A-Rod at least had that RBI double. But neither one has done much for their case this series.

  322. Andrea August 19th, 2007 at 3:09 pm

    freaking 20 year old legs.

  323. Rebecca August 19th, 2007 at 3:10 pm

That would have been a sweet DP, but we didn’t have much of a chance.

  324. hh August 19th, 2007 at 3:11 pm

Gotta be one of his last batters…

He won’t be allowed to face Sheffield again, no way.

  325. Hobs August 19th, 2007 at 3:11 pm

    NEED to use Edwar tonight…

  326. Thrillington August 19th, 2007 at 3:11 pm

    Hi All,

I am taken aback by a lot of the negativity shown Wang. I haven’t caught his last efforts, but can someone please sum up in a nutshell where the turning point of his season happened.

It’s a bummer, but I have to believe he’ll turn it around. He really looked overmatched out there with men on base and seemed flustered.

  327. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Tim McCarver oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 19th, 2007 at 3:11 pm

    STICK FIGURE!

  328. kasey Anderson August 19th, 2007 at 3:11 pm

“We all know the rules in a forum like this and you have to take the heat if you say stupid things.”

that’s cool. you’ve now got a whole board full of people, including SJ44 who thought wang would have a great game today, begging torre to pull wang.

i guess my comments were pretty stupid, though. he’s been great. nine hits through six innings. stellar stuff.

he’s past struggling. he’s lost the confidence in the ONE PITCH that makes him an effective pitcher. wang’s other pitches are pedestrian at best. if he can’t throw his sinker effectively, he’s absolutely nothing special. and for the last six or so weeks, he hasn’t thrown his sinker effectively.

  329. Brandon August 19th, 2007 at 3:11 pm

Wang to the plate forget about MAybin right now

  330. Brandon August 19th, 2007 at 3:11 pm

Wang to the plate forget about MAybin right now

  331. Hobs August 19th, 2007 at 3:13 pm

Gotta agree with Kasey on this one…

  332. Ron August 19th, 2007 at 3:13 pm

Are Yankees pitchers instructed to be obsessed with baserunners with two outs in an inning? Get the out at the plate and stop worrying.

And now it’s 3-0. Maybin meas nothing if you get Granderson.

  333. Brandon August 19th, 2007 at 3:13 pm

    K-Ram warming up

  334. E-ROC August 19th, 2007 at 3:14 pm

Wang just doesn’t have it today. Casey is going to be a tough out.

  335. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Tim McCarver oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 19th, 2007 at 3:14 pm

hes spending way too much attention to the runner. COME ON CMW YOUVE GOT THIS!

  336. SJ44 August 19th, 2007 at 3:15 pm

Four pitch walk to Granderson, because he is too pre-occupied with the baserunner.

Now, he faces Casey, who has had good swings on him all day.

Staying way too long with him, IMO.

Everybody slumps during a season. Right now, Wang is in one. The key is to minimize the damage and, IMO, the Yankees aren’t doing that with him.

Staying way too long with a guy who can’t find the plate and is clearly rattled out there.

  337. Ron August 19th, 2007 at 3:15 pm

None of us understands why Wang is suddenly unable to throw an effective sinker, and I think that’s why we’re panicked by it. Wang is the rock in this rotation, and he’s really damn shaky right now.

  338. hh August 19th, 2007 at 3:15 pm

    huge batter right here.. huge.

Wang won’t stay in to face Sheffield, and I don’t think I want to watch Edwar face Gary….

  339. Kj August 19th, 2007 at 3:15 pm

    TAKE HIM OUT!!!!!

  340. Brandon August 19th, 2007 at 3:16 pm

com’on Chingy even w/o the sinker you got us this far

  341. Rebecca August 19th, 2007 at 3:16 pm

Suddenly unable to find the strike zone. This has me really worried.

  342. Global Warming August 19th, 2007 at 3:16 pm

    3-0 on Casey.

Just walk him and bring in Ramirez.

  343. Ron August 19th, 2007 at 3:17 pm

Bringing in Ramirez with the bases loaded is not fair to the kid. Not that Torre cares.

  344. Andrea August 19th, 2007 at 3:17 pm

I haven’t seen Edwar pitch yet. I’m psyched!

  345. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Tim McCarver oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 19th, 2007 at 3:17 pm

YOUVE GOT HIM COME ON FINISH IT

  346. Kj August 19th, 2007 at 3:18 pm

    HUGE OUT

  347. Rebecca August 19th, 2007 at 3:18 pm

Cano with some CRITICAL Defense today!

  348. E-ROC August 19th, 2007 at 3:18 pm

Nice pick AGAIN by Cano. That should be it for Wang.

  349. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Tim McCarver oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 19th, 2007 at 3:18 pm

YES! 3 er for 6 ip is excusable

  350. Ron August 19th, 2007 at 3:18 pm

Robinson Cano and Lady Luck just saved Joe Torre’s ass.

  351. Global Warming August 19th, 2007 at 3:18 pm

All in all, Wang again didn’t have his best stuff but *kept us in the game for 6 innings giving up only 3 runs*, can’t ask for much more folks.

  352. ace August 19th, 2007 at 3:18 pm

yes…..big to get out of…..hey, wanger gut it out even though he didn’t have it all today……give him time and he’ll come around. At least he’s fighting

  353. dontfirecash August 19th, 2007 at 3:18 pm

good lord Wang is living on the edge…what the hell is wrong with him?

  354. Pepper Brooks August 19th, 2007 at 3:19 pm

Anyone know if Wang is hurt. He really looks out of sync, beyond the “he trying too hard”.

  355. mel August 19th, 2007 at 3:19 pm

    Way to battle back CMW!

  356. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Tim McCarver oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 19th, 2007 at 3:19 pm

Global dont give up so easily.

  357. Hobs August 19th, 2007 at 3:19 pm

    Edwar next inning please.

    9 H, 2 Walks in 6 IP.

Wang gets realllly lucky sometimes cause this is til a Quality Start.

  358. Stuart August 19th, 2007 at 3:19 pm

Wang gave us 6 innings of torture..

again he is the ace but he has not pitched well in at least 4 starts if not more…

the game will be decided in the pen. I was not looking forward to Edwar vs sheff with the bases loaded..

    edwar for the 7th……

  359. Ron August 19th, 2007 at 3:19 pm

3 runs in six innings is okay. 11 baserunners in 6 innings is not.

Wang had nothing, and Torre still threw him to the wolves. But he pulled Karstens for the equally awful Jim Brower!

  360. J-Dawg August 19th, 2007 at 3:20 pm

Maybe that escape job will help Wang next time he pitches.

  361. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Tim McCarver oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 19th, 2007 at 3:20 pm

ron you getting on torre is really getting old.

  362. sweeny murti August 19th, 2007 at 3:21 pm

What happend to Wang? He has gone from being poised on the mound to looking like that other Asian pitcher, whos name I wont mention to avoid bad karma, in a hurry.

  363. Brandon August 19th, 2007 at 3:21 pm

JOE WTF just get Edwar for the 7th why are you sitting him again !!!!!!

    2 WEEKS BEFORE WASN’T ENOUGH

  364. Ron August 19th, 2007 at 3:21 pm

Leiter’s hallucinating, right? Is Torre out of his mind?!

Casey hit a rocket, and Cano made a nice play. Wang should have been done, and that fool in the dugout can’t trust a kid that’s been dominant two outing out of three over a pitcher that’s struggling visibly and terribly.

  365. Stuart August 19th, 2007 at 3:21 pm

wang better be done for the day……

yes announcers are clueless 1/2 the time………

  366. Rebecca August 19th, 2007 at 3:22 pm

Aww, if Phillips had hit that anywhere but the deepest part of the park…..

  367. SJ44 August 19th, 2007 at 3:22 pm

Please, can the 3 runs in 6 innings is inexcusable nonsense.

9 hits, 2 WP, a balk, 2 BB, and Cano making two great plays that saved at least 2 runs and he blew a 2 run lead for his team.

You still want to tell us Wang pitched well today? He melted down on the mound today.

He didn’t pitch well and everybody can see he is struggling.

It happens. They were fortunate to get out of that inning. At some point, you have to get guys out of games when they are struggling.

They got lucky that inning. Its time to go to the bullpen and see if they can do a better job.

  368. kasey Anderson August 19th, 2007 at 3:22 pm

it looks as though wang’s going back out there for the 7th. that’s surprising to me. that’s an awful lot of confidence in a guy who, quite frankly, hasn’t pitched well today.

3 ER in 6 IP looks like a decent line. yet everyone who’s been watching the game is literally begging torre to yank the guy. that “quality start” stat is pretty misleading.

  369. Rebecca August 19th, 2007 at 3:22 pm

Looks like Damon took my advice.

  370. Ron August 19th, 2007 at 3:22 pm

  374. E-ROC August 19th, 2007 at 3:23 pm

“I don’t know what my role is on this team” just hit a homerun.

  375. Viper August 19th, 2007 at 3:23 pm

_that’s cool. you’ve now got a whole board full of people, including SJ44 who thought wang would have a great game today, begging torre to pull wang.

i guess my comments were pretty stupid, though. he’s been great. nine hits through six innings. stellar stuff._

The problem with you is that you’ve cried wolf way too many times and few take you seriously anymore – whether your point is valid or not.

You pile on when this team or it’s players struggle and look at everything in a negative fashion.

Perhaps if you toned that crap down, your criticisms would have more validity down the road.

  376. dontfirecash August 19th, 2007 at 3:23 pm

    YOU SUCK JOHNNY….HAHAHHAAHAHha!!!!!!

  377. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Tim McCarver oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 19th, 2007 at 3:23 pm

  378. SJ44 August 19th, 2007 at 3:24 pm

JMO but, Joba needs to be for the 7th.

Sheffield-Ordonez-Guillen. I take my shot with Joba in the 7th.

    What do you guys think?

  379. Brandon August 19th, 2007 at 3:24 pm

    MELKYYYYYY :D

  380. mel August 19th, 2007 at 3:24 pm

JD! See there’s an example of why having a little overcrowding is a good thing. When players don’t play on a regular basis, they go out to prove themselves. When you’ve got the job fulltime, players can get complacent.

  381. kasey Anderson August 19th, 2007 at 3:24 pm

if wang pitches the 7th and loses this lead, this game is 100% on torre. absolutely no reason joba shouldn’t be warming right now. none.

  382. BX 12 Fordham Road August 19th, 2007 at 3:24 pm

nice when the bench chips in with a home run

  383. Wouter August 19th, 2007 at 3:24 pm

Damon didn’t even look like he was swinging that hard. Makes you wonder where the power is in all his other at-bats, no? :o )

  384. Ron August 19th, 2007 at 3:25 pm

    Viper:

I formally apologize for being concerned that the team with the highest payroll in major league baseball is currently not on pace to make the playoffs. God forbid I do anything but assume that Joe Torre is a genius and everything will work out.

    Wait a minute…

  385. J-Dawg August 19th, 2007 at 3:25 pm

A burst of power from Johnny and a single by Melky, sounds like the recipe for a big inning!!!

  386. Stuart August 19th, 2007 at 3:25 pm

Leyland haes his pen, bonderman 110 pitches still in there after 2 hits..

    wow

  387. dontfirecash August 19th, 2007 at 3:25 pm

    SJ,
I would like to see Edwar pitch in a high pressure situation, but thats just my opinion.

  388. Global Warming August 19th, 2007 at 3:26 pm

Stop whining about Wang. Everybody and their mother knows he didn’t have his best stuff again today, but why argue with results? He *kept us in the game* even if it was one of the ugliest starts of alltime. That’s what matters.

Wang is struggling, has been for a while now. So was Pettitte not to long ago when you all wrote him off, what happened? He turned it around, just like CMW will.

  389. Brandon August 19th, 2007 at 3:26 pm

SJ44 I’d put Edwar out there in the 7th, Viz 8th, Mo 9th

we need Joba in LAA for 2 games

  390. Rebecca August 19th, 2007 at 3:26 pm

I don’t pitch Joba the 7th because I don’t want him unavailable for two games against LAA.

    I pitch KRam 7 and Joba 8.

  391. Ron August 19th, 2007 at 3:26 pm

You can’t let Wang pitch the 7th. It would be one thing if he had improved as this game has gone along, but that’s simply not the case.

One thing I hate about Torre is that he looks at the outcome and ignores the process. The process is the best indicator of future success. The outcome is heavily impacted by dumb luck.

  392. Yankee Boy August 19th, 2007 at 3:27 pm

SJ44, It would fit within the Joba rules and it makes a lot of sense.

  393. Global Warming August 19th, 2007 at 3:27 pm

Chamberlain is warming. He will enter the 7th. Stop the panick.

  394. Brandon August 19th, 2007 at 3:28 pm

I guess Edwar won’t pitch for another 2 Weeks

  395. ace August 19th, 2007 at 3:28 pm

    that was awful

  396. Ron August 19th, 2007 at 3:28 pm

    That didn’t work so well.

  397. E-ROC August 19th, 2007 at 3:28 pm

Joba is coming in next inning.

  398. SJ44 August 19th, 2007 at 3:28 pm

Abreu swings at ball 4 over his head, killing the inning.

Awful hacks all day and they bailed out Bonderman.

Looks like Joba time and the bullpen is going to need another 3 shutout innings, like yesterday.

Not easy but, let’s hope they can get the job done.

  399. Rebecca August 19th, 2007 at 3:28 pm

Probably a really bad idea to let Det have a DP….

Inning could have been much bigger. Let’s hope our ‘Pen can do its job.

  400. CB August 19th, 2007 at 3:29 pm

I was hoping to avoid it but Joba has to pitch the seventh.

Against those three hitters and what he did to them last time he faced them he should be in the game.

  401. J-Dawg August 19th, 2007 at 3:29 pm

Rats! So much for the big inning, let’s jst hold them down!!

  402. dontfirecash August 19th, 2007 at 3:29 pm

How are we ever going to know what Edwar can do if Joe refueses to use him in high pressure situations?

  403. Stuart August 19th, 2007 at 3:29 pm

that was ball 4, big out.. Joba will not have enough time to get ready because of the quick outs!!!!!

I would start with Edwar but what do I know……..

  404. hh August 19th, 2007 at 3:30 pm

I like Joba vs. the heart of the order a lot more than Edwar.

use Edwar in the 8th against the bottom of the order.. I know it’s a little out of order, but definitely makes more sense

  405. Ron August 19th, 2007 at 3:30 pm

This offense is just not on its game right now, haven’t been since the start of the Baltimore series. That’s okay, but they need the other parts of this team to compensate.

  406. Rebecca August 19th, 2007 at 3:31 pm

    Guess it’s JOBA TIME!

  407. Ron August 19th, 2007 at 3:31 pm

Well, this is annoying, but at least it makes sense.

If Wang can get the win, that can only help his psyche.

    Let’s go Joba!

  408. mel August 19th, 2007 at 3:31 pm

    Stuart,

I thought there was a rule against pitchers coming into an inning with a pitch count over 100?

  409. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Tim McCarver oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 19th, 2007 at 3:31 pm

    JOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOBAAAAAAAAAAAA

  410. Yankee Boy August 19th, 2007 at 3:31 pm

Lets hope for the best for Wang. It will be interesting to see what Torre says when he’s asked.

  411. Viper August 19th, 2007 at 3:32 pm

What are you talking about, Ron?

    Criticisms are completely valid.

But 100% negativity in every post is tiresome and ridiculous.

  412. jennifer August 19th, 2007 at 3:32 pm

Afternoon everyone. Back from my wild weekend!!

  413. Stuart August 19th, 2007 at 3:33 pm

mel the point was bonderman hada high pitch count and was not effective..

if he was effective the pitch count does not matter.. he gave up 3 straight hits……..

  414. SJ44 August 19th, 2007 at 3:33 pm

This isn’t tryout time. Its the right move to bring in Joba, IMO.

Whether it works or not, we shall see.

However, the move itself, I agree with it.

That’s why they brought this kid up…..to pitch in situations like this.

  415. Harley August 19th, 2007 at 3:33 pm

Well there goes another Joba Rule. Never start him in the middle of an inning.

  416. PAT M..... August 19th, 2007 at 3:34 pm

    Boston Yankee:

Thing is, he’s really, REALLY good. I can’t wait until he’s starting.

We’ve really only seen two of his pitches out of the pen. He also throws an effective changeup.

  423. CB August 19th, 2007 at 3:36 pm

The heart of the Tiger’s order is among the best in all of baseball.

Now is not the time to see how Edwar does under pressure.

How is that “fair” to Edwar? Not that I understand the concept of being “fair” to a major league relief pitcher.

This is not the middle of an inning. They gave him extra time to warm up.

  424. Ron August 19th, 2007 at 3:36 pm

    WOW.

  425. Brandon August 19th, 2007 at 3:37 pm

  426. jennifer August 19th, 2007 at 3:37 pm

  427. E-ROC August 19th, 2007 at 3:37 pm

Poor Ordonez…..he wanted no part of Joba.

  428. dontfirecash August 19th, 2007 at 3:37 pm

He also throws an effective curveball, which is why he should be a starter next year. You don’t waste a guy with four serviceable pitches in the bullpen.

  429. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Tim McCarver oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 19th, 2007 at 3:37 pm

    This is unreal. 9 Pitches?

Do you go with him again in the 8th? Or Viz/Edwar(doubt it) in the 8th?

  443. Kat August 19th, 2007 at 3:39 pm

Hey, where did you guys read that johnny damon doesn’t know what his role is? I’d like to read it. Thanks.

  444. jennifer August 19th, 2007 at 3:39 pm

Yeah me either Rebecca. It’s his name, it’s his fast ball, and when more people learn his life story it will be that as well. He had a difficult childhood.

  445. SJ44 August 19th, 2007 at 3:40 pm

    Three all stars….9 pitches, 8 strikes, 2 k’s, 1-2-3 inning.

You have a weapon like that, you use him.

    Another impressive outing.

Now, it would be nice to add on a few runs here.

  446. E-ROC August 19th, 2007 at 3:40 pm

LMAO @ Joba making these hitters look overmatched.

  447. ace August 19th, 2007 at 3:40 pm

I love not taking any chances and letting joba shut the tigs out now……a lead this late in the game is no experiment time

  448. Chag August 19th, 2007 at 3:40 pm

    8 Strikes + 1 Ball= 9 pitches

    One more inning?

  449. Global Warming August 19th, 2007 at 3:41 pm

“This practically identical to the Yankees vs. Zumaya…except in reverse.”

Heh I was just saying the same thing while watching the game.

  450. CB August 19th, 2007 at 3:41 pm

Is there a more dominant pitcher in baseball right now?

Zumaya does not have a breaking ball that’s even close to Joba’s slider.

  451. J-Dawg August 19th, 2007 at 3:42 pm

It’s almost unreal how Joba is mowing everybody down. No matter how tough the hitters are, none of them has had an answer for him yet. I love it!!!!

  452. mel August 19th, 2007 at 3:42 pm

    Stuart,

LOL, I was joking. Torre’s the only manager who won’t let his pitchers sniff the 100-mark. You’re right if it works out, good, if not it’s on the manager. Clemens? Yes. Wang today? No, he’s a basket case out there. Pedro? No.

  453. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Tim McCarver oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 19th, 2007 at 3:42 pm

i just came back from the doctor i have been diagnosed with JOBA FEVER. i am on the bandwagon no matter how irrational it is

  454. sweeny murti August 19th, 2007 at 3:42 pm

If we score a couple of runs I would like to see K-ram if not unleash Joba again.

  455. Stuart August 19th, 2007 at 3:42 pm

he is going 2 innings today unless the yanks score a bunch of runs……..

  456. Kat August 19th, 2007 at 3:42 pm

Also, can someone send the link to the Joba article? I can’t seem to find it. Thanks again!!

  457. CA Yanks Fan August 19th, 2007 at 3:42 pm

Joba kinda looks like a cross between Roger and the Babe to me.

  458. Ron August 19th, 2007 at 3:43 pm

Zumaya has a fine breaking ball. He’s also got 2-3 MPH on Joba’s fastball.

But Joba’s has more movement. And he has a changeup.

Joba’s future is as a Cy Young contender in the rotation.

  459. mel August 19th, 2007 at 3:43 pm

C’mon guys, we need some insurance for -Mo- Joba.

  460. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Tim McCarver oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 19th, 2007 at 3:43 pm

    bring in edwar

  461. sweeny murti August 19th, 2007 at 3:43 pm

Hope Giambino is not poisening his mind there.

  462. SJ44 August 19th, 2007 at 3:43 pm

Unless this kid’s head is the size of the Empire State Building, I don’t know how anybody can worry about having a “big head”.

He’s really, really good. One dominant arm.

He’s not getting out little punch and judy hitters.

He has faced Sheffield-Ordonez-Guillen twice each this weekend and dominated. Wow!

  463. Harley August 19th, 2007 at 3:43 pm

Oops. Nevermind. Meanwhile, just to show how nuts Joba-mania is, I’ve got tickets for tomorrow’s game and was actually hoping the Yankees would find a way to win without him today. Oh well. Maybe I’ll see the new and improved Farnsy!!

  464. ace August 19th, 2007 at 3:43 pm

  466. BX 12 Fordham Road August 19th, 2007 at 3:43 pm

Joba, Hughes, Wang….with Kennedy, Betances, etc…on the way…

The Pavano era is officially over

  467. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Tim McCarver oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 19th, 2007 at 3:43 pm

so we dont have to wait two days to see him again

  468. CB August 19th, 2007 at 3:44 pm

Boston had a chance to draft Joba twice and passed on him both times.

Boston took another college pitcher the very pick before the Yankees took Joba.

  469. Global Warming August 19th, 2007 at 3:44 pm

“Is there a more dominant pitcher in baseball right now?

Zumaya does not have a breaking ball that’s even close to Joba’s slider.”

Seeing as how Zumaya has more than 7 innings under his belt and has playoff dominance also under his belt, I think I’d give Joel the nod.

Chamberlain is not too shabby though ;)

  470. Jim Clark August 19th, 2007 at 3:44 pm

If the Yankees are married to the “limit Joba the Hut” to 130 innings like they claim, then bring in Vizcaino for the 8th. He has pitched well lately. Protect the future, assuming this 130 rule is a good one

  471. Carmine August 19th, 2007 at 3:45 pm

I love when Kay and Leiter argue. You can tell how angry Leiter gets because he knows he knows so much more than Michael Kay.

  472. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Tim McCarver oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 19th, 2007 at 3:45 pm

sj44 a kid coming in an all of a sudden the whole city is loving him. id say it isnt how does he get a big head. ITS HOW DOESNT he

  473. Ron August 19th, 2007 at 3:45 pm

Joba had serious knee and weight concerns heading into his last college season. That’s why he fell so far.

  474. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Tim McCarver oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 19th, 2007 at 3:45 pm

  475. Brandon August 19th, 2007 at 3:45 pm

  476. Keith August 19th, 2007 at 3:46 pm

    INSURANCE RUNS !!!!!
Can’t have enough of them. Not this time of the year.

  477. J-Dawg August 19th, 2007 at 3:46 pm

Nice to see that Al continues to bring the same intensity in the booth as he did when he was on the mound!!!

  478. Carmine August 19th, 2007 at 3:47 pm

I thought I read the Yankees would start to gradually break some of the Joba rules as his arm got used to pitching out of the bullpen. Like occasionally pitching back to back days, etc.

  479. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Tim McCarver oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 19th, 2007 at 3:47 pm

Kill him al step on his throat and put two in his head. al is getting pissed watch out hes going to the shelley school of excitement

  480. Ron August 19th, 2007 at 3:47 pm

Al, maybe it’s not abuse. But the Yankees simply cannot afford to take chances with this kid’s arm.

He, Hughes, and Wang are going to put the fear of God into the rest of the American League.

  481. hh August 19th, 2007 at 3:47 pm

damn.. a-rod had that base stolen easily

  482. E-ROC August 19th, 2007 at 3:48 pm

Al Leiter and Michael Kay are going at each other about how the Yankees are using Joba. It’s hilarious. Leiter wants the Yankees to stop babying him. Michael Kay is arguing that the Yankees have a set plan for Joba. Of course Leiter disagrees. It’s over now.

  483. Rebecca August 19th, 2007 at 3:48 pm

C’mon Yanks. A run or two here would be so so sooooo good…

  484. ace August 19th, 2007 at 3:48 pm

  486. Jonathon August 19th, 2007 at 3:49 pm

I love Al Leiter…speaks his mind…always brings a great insight…what a mistake it was for the Yankees to trade him…he could have been a true Yankee

  487. Kat August 19th, 2007 at 3:49 pm

You wanna hear how nuts the Joba mania is? Yesterday, I was at the game. When Mo was pitching and he walked a batter, the crowd started chanting, “We want Joba, We want Joba.” I flipped out and started yelling at people.

  488. The D train August 19th, 2007 at 3:49 pm

Pavano ?????? Ha ! …. he stands as much chance of pitching in a Yankee uniform as Kevin Brown does.

  489. CB August 19th, 2007 at 3:49 pm

    Global Warming,

I’m in now way down playing Zumaya. He is absolutely dominant and has a proven track record (though it is only a track record of one year as a set up man).

That said in terms of pure stuff what I said stands. Zumaya’s breaking stuff is not as good as Joba’s.

Does that mean Joba is a better pitcher at this time? No. But in terms of their arsenal of pitches, Joba has a better repertoire.

Joba is much more than his 99-100 mph fastball. Not many guys who throw that hard ever develop their secondary offerrings.

  490. SJ44 August 19th, 2007 at 3:50 pm

IMO, Joba has to pitch the 8th. Only 9 pitches and his location was stuff was dominant.

I don’t care if it drydocks him for two games in Anaheim. Gotta win the game at hand. You have a lead, you have him pitch another inning, IMO.

  491. Ron August 19th, 2007 at 3:50 pm

    Carmine,

They might if his future was in the bullpen. But it isn’t. It’s as a 200 inning ace in the rotation. You want to use him as much as possible and make sure he’s ready to wrest a rotation spot from some veteran next spring training.

  492. S.o.S.27 August 19th, 2007 at 3:50 pm

    He looks like Giambi.

  493. Carmine August 19th, 2007 at 3:50 pm

Al Leiter definitely is the Shelley Duncan of the booth. I wanna see him clothesline Kim Jones.

  494. E-ROC August 19th, 2007 at 3:51 pm

Cano has become a feared hitter.

  495. ace August 19th, 2007 at 3:51 pm

  497. jennifer August 19th, 2007 at 3:52 pm

What happened to Jeter, besides being banged up? I haven’t been around to watch any games.

  498. Ron August 19th, 2007 at 3:52 pm

It’s absurd to argue that Joba should replace Mariano as closer. Rivera was absolutely unhittable for over two months, then struggled a bit of late. It happens. He looked very good yesterday.

    Joba is a set-up guy/starter in waiting. That’s it.

  499. Brandon August 19th, 2007 at 3:52 pm

The problem w/ Al’s theory is he gives off the vibe in his arguement it doesn’t matter if you use Joba back to back yes it does, he hasn’t had 30 IP as a reliever in the minors, we know he has nasty stuff , started pitching at a late age, had arthritis that also contributed to him throwing 93 – 94 his sr. year. He is going from SP to RP , that’s day after day work w/ a 21 yr. old who is not a CL or MRP he is a SP w/ nasty stuff that translates to the pen

  500. Carmine August 19th, 2007 at 3:52 pm

Wilson Betemit=protection. That’s why Cano’s numbers are so impressive. He hits at the bottom of the lineup. It’s not like he has some feared power hitter batting behind him.

  501. Wouter August 19th, 2007 at 3:52 pm

Wow Kat, that is absolutely ridiculous. Respectless, in a way I guess. Seems that there are a lot of idiots out there. Good thing Mo shut them up then.

  502. Rebecca August 19th, 2007 at 3:52 pm

If he walks the bases loaded, do you pinch hint with Shelley?

  503. Jonathon August 19th, 2007 at 3:52 pm

Love to see Betemit rope a double to the gap here.

  504. mel August 19th, 2007 at 3:53 pm

I think one of the Joba Rules should be “Keep Him Away from Giambi”. Don’t want Joba to get accustomed to Jason’s wild lifestyle. lol.

  505. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Tim McCarver oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 19th, 2007 at 3:53 pm

what happens if you get into a fight with your booth member and you really cant stand them at the time do you just suck it up and do the game if so i wanna listen to that.

Michael kay: wow would you look at that al have you ever seen that.

    AL: yes michael EVERYDAY.

  506. Viper August 19th, 2007 at 3:54 pm

    I also love Leiter.

He can talk all he wants. At least he’s been there – unlike Kay.

Leiter will always have my respect for how he pitched in Game 5 of the 2000 World Series.

I think he threw 140+ pitches in that game.

  507. Brandon August 19th, 2007 at 3:54 pm

  513. Kat August 19th, 2007 at 3:54 pm

SJ, I agree – he won’t be able to pitch until wednesday against the angels…but if they take him out, he’d only be able to pitch in one game (tuesday) against them anyway (granted, possibly for two innings). That way, if they use him for two innings on tuesday, he will be fresh and ready to go after the off-day on thursday!

  514. Stuart August 19th, 2007 at 3:55 pm

cairo vs Betemit, any comparison… the main difference is Betemits power…..

the bench is better and the pen is better…….

this team is much better then 6 weeks ago..

  515. Jonathon August 19th, 2007 at 3:55 pm

And also, I love what Leiter is saying but I don’t think he’s seeing the big picture…by limiting Joba’s innings in August and September, you might have those innings to use in October

    Nice Betemit…take that Leyland.

  516. Wouter August 19th, 2007 at 3:55 pm

Betemit gets in Leyland’s face! (eventually)

  520. Kat August 19th, 2007 at 3:56 pm

I agree, Wouter – and obviously, those fans didn’t know the Joba rules. Their chanting was pointless and disrespectful!!!

  521. Jonathon August 19th, 2007 at 3:56 pm

Viper…absolutely…talk about guts…he will always have my respect for that 1 game alone.

  526. jennifer August 19th, 2007 at 3:57 pm

he’s got the charisma thing going, that’s for sure

  529. Carmine August 19th, 2007 at 3:57 pm

Phillips has been hitting this series. Bottom of the lineup=production. I retract my statement about Cano having no protection. Phillips+Betemit>Manny

  530. Stuart August 19th, 2007 at 3:57 pm

  535. SJ44 August 19th, 2007 at 3:58 pm

Everybody wants Andy Phillips out of the lineup but he keeps getting big hits.

6-10 this series with some clutch RBI.

He’s not an all star or a stat hero but, you ride him as long as you can. He’s done a very nice job for the Yankees this year.

  536. james August 19th, 2007 at 3:59 pm

Edwar should pitch the 8th with at least a three run lead and he needs the work

  537. Wouter August 19th, 2007 at 3:59 pm

Viper, yes, 142 pitches, the last of which was hit through the middle by Luis Sojo (I think that’s such a pretty play to watch, the middle infielders just missing it). Great performance, but good thing for the Yankees we got the best of him in the end.

Andy!! That’s insurance baby! Now, do you still have Joba in the 8th? (although Kat’s planning for him makes sense).

  538. Marius August 19th, 2007 at 3:59 pm

Once again Andy comes through. Whoever says Andy is an auto-out isn’t paying attention. He gets hits and contributes.

  539. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Tim McCarver oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 19th, 2007 at 3:59 pm

angels on the conrners no out

  540. CB August 19th, 2007 at 3:59 pm

Phillips just stinks, doesn’t he? Why has he been in the line up the last two day?

But that hit didn’t make it to the wall so it’s a poor predictor for future performance so he still wouldn’t perform well in a simulated game on Baseball Prosepctus.

With a three run lead I wouldn’t send Joba out again. This is a good spot for Edwar. If he gets in trouble you can use Viz.

  541. dontfirecash August 19th, 2007 at 3:59 pm

I still mantain my original position that Andy Phillips blows…he is making me reconsider that this weekend though.

  548. Matty August 19th, 2007 at 4:01 pm

I say let shelley duncan pitch the 8th. He’ll melt Tiger players with his steely glare.

  549. kasey Anderson August 19th, 2007 at 4:02 pm

am i the only one who’d like to see them maybe pitch somebody else in the 8th so joba’s available for the first two games of the anaheim series? especially now that the offense has given them a couple more runs.

  550. hh August 19th, 2007 at 4:02 pm

Angels just royally F’d up a solid 1st and 3rd no one out rally… they look awful right now, hopefully they still are tomorrow..

  551. Jonathon August 19th, 2007 at 4:02 pm

Andy Phillips is the type of player the Yankees have needed in this recent age of All-Stars at every position. The Yankees always had role players in the dynasty years. I’m so happy that guys like Duncan, Phillips, Betemit, etc. are on the team now. They bring heart, enthusiasm and pride. These are the type of guys that help win championships.

  552. Carmine August 19th, 2007 at 4:02 pm

I love baseball prospectus and the Arizona Diamondbacks’ “expected” record being 4 games under .500 despite having a 5 game lead in their division. I don’t know who’s expecting it. That entire division’s no better.

  555. james August 19th, 2007 at 4:02 pm

wild pitch boston trails 3 zip

  556. Ron August 19th, 2007 at 4:02 pm

Build up that trade value, Johnny.

  557. CB August 19th, 2007 at 4:02 pm

This is why patience is the key with the Tigers. Their bull pen is so porous if you get into you’ll likely win.

  558. Matty August 19th, 2007 at 4:03 pm

This just in, Shelley Duncan has been tapped to command the return to the Moon.

  559. mel August 19th, 2007 at 4:03 pm

Nice inning, scoring 2 with 2 outs.

  560. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Tim McCarver oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 19th, 2007 at 4:03 pm

no for once i agree with kasey i said that above i want someone else to come in so we can pitch joba the day after tomorrow. bring in edwar

  561. Ron August 19th, 2007 at 4:03 pm

I really wish Torre would think once in a while. There is nothing to be gained by pitching Joba a second inning. Especially given the way that the Angels torment our bullpen on a regular basis.

  562. Ron August 19th, 2007 at 4:04 pm

Hey, Edwar’s coming in! Joe listened to me!

  563. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Tim McCarver oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 19th, 2007 at 4:05 pm

    hey ron: GETTING OLD

  564. Brandon August 19th, 2007 at 4:05 pm

    IT’S K-RAM TIME !!!!!!!!!!

  565. Rebecca August 19th, 2007 at 4:05 pm

Wise decision to take Joba out.

  566. Jonathon August 19th, 2007 at 4:05 pm

Yankees have been getting a lot of two out hits in the last few games. Two out hits = championships

  567. Ron August 19th, 2007 at 4:05 pm

    Boston Yankee:

    Get used to it.

  568. Marius August 19th, 2007 at 4:06 pm

Ron, seems Torre in thinking. Edwar in to pitch.

  569. Wouter August 19th, 2007 at 4:06 pm

Carmine, the expected record is based on runs scored vs. runs against…It’s an entirely mathematical thing.

lol, Kay: “viewers, PLEASE don’t be upset, but they lifted Joba.”

  570. dontfirecash August 19th, 2007 at 4:06 pm

haha, Sterling said K-ram looks like a grad student at NYU…good line.

  571. Rebecca August 19th, 2007 at 4:06 pm

    K for K-Ram!

  572. Carmine August 19th, 2007 at 4:07 pm

Ramirez has a slider too? I’d been led to believe he only had a fastball and changeup. That makes a lot more sense now.

  573. Rebecca August 19th, 2007 at 4:08 pm

    C’MON LET’S K THE SIDE!

  574. mel August 19th, 2007 at 4:08 pm

See? Torre reread the Joba rules and promptly moved Joba to sit with the Captain and the Rocket. Joba’s telling them, “So when can I get a cool name like you guys?”

  575. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Tim McCarver oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 19th, 2007 at 4:08 pm

ron its pretty sad that everything you say at the end has something to do with joe torre being an idiot. it shows youre short sighted and pretty full of yourself considering you think you can do a better job. he struggles with the bull pen and that is his weakness but atleast he admits it. seriously im sure im not the only one whos sick of it.

  576. Carmine August 19th, 2007 at 4:08 pm

Yeah, I know how the expected w/l thing works. I wish it were real since I’m pretty sure ours is better than Boston’s right now. I guess it’s accurate sometimes, but it just seems like a silly stat since it has no concrete baring on anything.

  577. Ron August 19th, 2007 at 4:08 pm

How was this man allowed to rot in the pen for two weeks? At least Torre owned up to it, but still.

  578. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Tim McCarver oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 19th, 2007 at 4:09 pm

    mel: joba isnt cool enough?

  579. Jonathon August 19th, 2007 at 4:09 pm

Ooofff…just looked at the Red Sox schedule for next week. What the Yankees are battling the Angels and Tigers, the Red Sox have the D’Rays and the White Sox. This will be a BIG win if they can pull it out.

  580. Matty August 19th, 2007 at 4:10 pm

I just realized who Joba looks like.

    “Chunk” from the Goonies.

  581. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Tim McCarver oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 19th, 2007 at 4:10 pm

aright im off to a bbq thanks for playing along guys go yankees

  582. Brandon August 19th, 2007 at 4:10 pm

    VAMOS CONO

    K-RAM BABY !!!!!!!!

  583. Wouter August 19th, 2007 at 4:10 pm

wow, this is the first time I see Edwar pitch, I like that changeup!

Although, it looks funny when he bounces one in: because of his tiny frame I always think it looks like he doesn’t have enough strength to throw the ball 60 feet.

  584. Jonathon August 19th, 2007 at 4:10 pm

    WOW!!!!

  585. kasey Anderson August 19th, 2007 at 4:11 pm

five straight K’s for joba and edwar. that’s impressive.

  586. Rebecca August 19th, 2007 at 4:11 pm

    K’D THE SIDE!

Yea, the K-Ram nickname is so sticking.

  587. ace August 19th, 2007 at 4:11 pm

wow….we got to see Joba and Edwar…..now they are only a mid game move to aquire chris britton away to making everyone happy

  588. Matty August 19th, 2007 at 4:11 pm

    Derek Jeter is: BLACK THUNDER

    Shelley Duncan is: WHITE LIGHTNING

“I killed more!” “Mine are deader!” HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

  589. Mike August 19th, 2007 at 4:11 pm

    Oh, man…

Wang Ks 6, Joba Ks 2, and K-Ram Ks the side.

  590. Ron August 19th, 2007 at 4:11 pm

    Suddenly, I like this bullpen.

  591. Tseng August 19th, 2007 at 4:11 pm

My god I heart these new relievers we have.

  592. Adam August 19th, 2007 at 4:11 pm

“I guess it’s accurate sometimes, but it just seems like a silly stat since it has no concrete baring on anything.”

It’s a better predictor of a team’s future success than their real W-L record.

  593. dontfirecash August 19th, 2007 at 4:11 pm

Strikes out the side…It looks even more absurd that he rotted in the pen for two weeks now while Joe trotted out the likes of Farns, Meyers, Villone and other assorted bums.

  594. Carmine August 19th, 2007 at 4:12 pm

12 strikeouts through 8 innings in a Wang start.

  595. Marius August 19th, 2007 at 4:12 pm

Torre has one issue he needs to work on. He prefers experience over talent. He needs to stop thinking like that and stop looking at years old stats and look at how pitchers are doing right now and decide on that. At times old stats work. But he shouldn’t ignore the present when deciding who comes in when.
He needs to understand that Mariano isn’t 30 anymore. He needs to understand that pitchers have slumps as well.

I think when he understands that, he will manage the bullpen better as well as the lineup.

  596. TKinDC August 19th, 2007 at 4:12 pm

    EL CAMBIO – Nice job!

It is great to see the young players come through in tough spots. A lot of the weaknesses of the early season look a lot better now.n Good job by Cashman and crew.

  597. jennifer August 19th, 2007 at 4:12 pm

The drays have actually had good pitching the last few days, they haven’t scored any funs, though.

  598. james August 19th, 2007 at 4:12 pm

they need to come up with a song for jobas’ entrance

  599. Lance August 19th, 2007 at 4:12 pm

perhaps torre is now starting to gain trust in edward and will use him in big spots now

  600. Lance August 19th, 2007 at 4:13 pm

    *edwar

  601. SJ44 August 19th, 2007 at 4:13 pm

4-3 in the 8th, I would have stuck with Joba.

6-3, I like the move for Edwar for two reasons. One, it shows Edwar Torre isn’t afraid to use him in the 8th inning.

Two (as it turned out), it becomes a HUGE confidence booster for him. Striking out the side against this team is damn impressive.

Gotta give Cashman a lot of props. He had the guts to remake the bullpen on the fly and its working.

  602. CB August 19th, 2007 at 4:13 pm

One of the chief problems in the Yankee pen and on the staff as a whole was the lack of strikeouts.

Not an issue the past two days.

How slow must Edwar’s change look after seeing Joba the inning before?

Do you rest Mariano for the ninth or is that being too greedy?

  603. quinn August 19th, 2007 at 4:13 pm

hahahaha lugo caught stealing, down 3-0, to end the inning!!!

  604. Stuart August 19th, 2007 at 4:13 pm

Edwar can pitch.. the reason he stunk that 1 outing was he did not pitch in 14 days..

this is not Tampa… As leiter said he dominated the minors…

the lst 2 men in the bullpen should be villone and henn…

edwar needs to be used a coupl of time a week preferebly 3 times a week. if he can be effective it will reduce the workload on the viz..

let Edwar start the 9th, if he gives up a baserunner bring in Mariano..If he does well Mariano gets the day off.

  605. mel August 19th, 2007 at 4:13 pm

Yeah, Joba is o.k. but it’s his given name. Unless it’s just Joba. Like Sting, Madonna, or Tiger.

Red Sox nation probably will dub him something insulting like “Joba the Hutt”.

  606. Mike S. August 19th, 2007 at 4:14 pm

    Great job by Joba!

    7 IP, 0 R, 2 hits, 2 walks and 11 ks.

    As for Edwar,

the people who got on him for 1 bad outing should apologize. If you take away that one bad outing (after he didn’t pitch for 2 weeks), Edwar’s stats become

    5 2/3 IP, 1 R, 3 hits, 1 walk, and 10 Ks.

  607. Global Warming August 19th, 2007 at 4:14 pm

Props to Chamberlain, Ramirez, and Torre.

Torre squeezed in another inning from Wang. Then proceeded to pitch Joba for 1 and Edwar for 1 in the 8th. All worked out, great use of the bullpen by Joe.

  608. BX 12 Fordham Road August 19th, 2007 at 4:14 pm

apparently Joba has lost about an “Edwar” worth of weight the last season or so…..

glad to see Edwar getting work in a spot like this

  609. ace August 19th, 2007 at 4:15 pm

don’t be throwin d’s around like their nothing Lance…..lol

  610. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Tim McCarver oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 19th, 2007 at 4:15 pm

im back mel: it isnt his given name. he changed it because his niece couldnt pronounce his name. okay now im out i swear

  611. Matty August 19th, 2007 at 4:15 pm

    James:

I already called Joba’s entrance theme. “Jesus Christ Superstar”.

  612. Ron August 19th, 2007 at 4:15 pm

    Mel:

Are you kidding me? Hutts are rich gangsters. Who doesn’t want those qualities associated with their filthy setup aces?

  613. BX 12 Fordham Road August 19th, 2007 at 4:16 pm

why would Mo come in for the 9th ?

  614. Boston Yankee (fire Michael Kay and Jon Sterling and Suzyn Waldman and Tim McCarver oh yea and anyone on ESPN that isnt named Harold or Erin) August 19th, 2007 at 4:16 pm

mel joba isnt his given name he changed it to joba cause his neice couldnt pronounce his real name so he changed it officially. okay now im really leaving

  615. Matty August 19th, 2007 at 4:16 pm

and since “Jesus Christ Superstar” might be a bit… much, another suggestion was calling the bullpen MANDATORY METALLICA.

Joba comes in to “Seek and Destroy”

    Mo comes in to “Sandman”

  616. Rebecca August 19th, 2007 at 4:17 pm

    Way to hustle ARod!

  617. Matty August 19th, 2007 at 4:17 pm

    Mel and Ron:

Again, I also said if Joba was nicknamed “the hutt”, he should drag Kim Jones in a gold bikini behind him to the mound.

  618. Brandon August 19th, 2007 at 4:17 pm

Edwar Ramirez ERA now is down to 6.35

(joking)take that Pete Abraham !!!! ..LOL

  619. Tseng August 19th, 2007 at 4:18 pm

You could use Edwar for another inning right? I missed yesterday’s game so I dont know if he pitched yesterday, but if not then having Edwar pitch another inning might be good.

  620. Ron August 19th, 2007 at 4:18 pm

You use Mariano in the 9th. It’s a save situation.

  621. Jonathon August 19th, 2007 at 4:18 pm

A huge confidence booster for Edwar…considering the type of exit he made last time (I know it wasn’t his fault) and those types of outings can sometimes crush young pitchers.

  622. james August 19th, 2007 at 4:18 pm

Edwar was unhittable his first couple of outings when he came up the first time. Then we played the angels who released him and he got too worked up trying to show them up that he got smacked around and Torre didn’t pitch him for a month, literately a month. Lets hope that doesn’t happen next week.

  623. dontfirecash August 19th, 2007 at 4:19 pm

I thought I read that Joba’s entrance song was “Indian outlaw” which seems sort of inappropriate in today’s pc society.

  624. Jack in the Box August 19th, 2007 at 4:19 pm

CB: ” How slow must Edwar’s change look after seeing Joba the inning before?”

I like where your head is at, Farnsworth fastball would also set up the same situation, K-ram might make them swing three times at the same pitch

  625. jennifer August 19th, 2007 at 4:19 pm

Why doesn’t Joe think he can squeeze another inning out of Edwar? Why does he need to use Mo. Didn’t he pitch last night? Than you won’t have him for tomorrow.

  626. Marius August 19th, 2007 at 4:19 pm

A-Rod made that hit happen. Great speed. Not easy to get that hit on Inge. He came up quick and threw quick. Both were impressive.

  627. Ron August 19th, 2007 at 4:19 pm

    Matty:

    That is amazingly bad-ass.

  628. Jonathon August 19th, 2007 at 4:19 pm

I think ‘Joba the Hutt’ is an outstanding nickname.

  629. J-Dawg August 19th, 2007 at 4:19 pm

A-Rod is so talented that it’s easy to overlook the fact that he REALLY plays the game hard. He goes all out on every ball.

  630. mel August 19th, 2007 at 4:19 pm

    Ron,

Sorry not up on the gang slang. I keep picturing Jaba the Hutt from Star Wars. He’s nasty gross. Joba’s just plain filthy nasty.

  631. CB August 19th, 2007 at 4:20 pm

By the way – the yankees may have another Edwar in the system.

They found another interesting player from the independent league named Stephen Artz. He’s down in Charleston – Low A. Got signed a couple of weeks ago.

Like Edwar his numbers in the independent league were just absurd (perhaps even better).

This is what he’s done in Charleston:

    9.2 IP 1 H 1 R 17 K and 0 BB

Throws a low 90′s fastball but his command is supposed to be incredible. The coaches in charleston are raving about how he puts the ball exactly where he wants it.

Cashman has perhaps done a better job of finding talent in the independent league than anyone else. Scott Paterson has been terrific in AA this year – another indy ball guy.

  632. quinn August 19th, 2007 at 4:20 pm

i HATE the “day-o” chant, anybody agree?

  633. BX 12 Fordham Road August 19th, 2007 at 4:20 pm

Tseng….agreed, or even bring Villone in with a 3 run lead

  634. Chicago Dave August 19th, 2007 at 4:21 pm

How about pitching Edwar in the ninth? I know it won’t happen, but I can dream, can’t I?!! Mo has scared me lately…

  635. Rebecca August 19th, 2007 at 4:21 pm

    Bases loaded, 2 out again.

Let’s see if they can clear at least one or two of them…Wilson’s come through once before today…

  636. YankeeJosh August 19th, 2007 at 4:22 pm

Global Warming, you stole my thunder. Personally I was hoping for the other way around, Edwar in the 7th, Joba the 8th. My thinking was that after seeing edwar’s slow stuff, Joba’s balls would look even faster.

However, major props to Torre for getting Edwar in. In July the excuse would have been that we need to win games and can’t trust Edwar. Right now the bullpen looks pretty solid with Mo, Joba, Viz and Edwar all seeming to be reliable.

Since Mo’s had a bit of a tired arm, I wouldn’t mind if we gave him back to back days off. However, if he’s used, it can’t be called a mistake. Maybe we add in an insurance run and leave Edwar in.

  637. Brandon August 19th, 2007 at 4:22 pm

  650. dontfirecash August 19th, 2007 at 4:23 pm

    CB,
Mike at RAB had this to say about Patterson. “He is so tall that with his straight over the top pitching motion, it looks like his fastball is falling out of the sky.”

  651. Marius August 19th, 2007 at 4:23 pm

I love this team as they are right now. Go Cashman for putting it together, even if it was a little late. This team is hard to beat with the offense they put together.

    What is this Day-O chant??

  652. ace August 19th, 2007 at 4:23 pm

    Betemit says: match that Andy!

  654. Chicago Dave August 19th, 2007 at 4:24 pm

  657. jennifer August 19th, 2007 at 4:24 pm

Okay sit down Mo, and let Edwar finsh.

I have a comment to make to the writers who say the Yankees don’t win close games. How about they don’t just look at the final score and actually watch the games. For instance there was a game that Mike pitched that most if it was very close, and they blew it open late in the game. And today as well, most of the game was close. but if you look at the final score we didn’t win a close game. It just goes to show that the writers don’t know what they are talking about.

  658. YankeeJosh August 19th, 2007 at 4:24 pm

Edwar would get a save if he stays in. Wonder if Joe will stick with him or go to Villone who was warming earlier.

  661. Ron August 19th, 2007 at 4:25 pm

    CB:

You know what’s amazing? Johan Santana has practically matched those numbers in one game.

    8.0 IP, 2 H, 0 BB, 17 K.

    He’s supernatural.

  662. Global Warming August 19th, 2007 at 4:25 pm

They just showed Mo sitting after the bases clearing double. Love to see that, he needs as much rest as he can get. Ramirez/ Villone for the 9th will be just fine.

We took 3 out of 4 from the Tigers, great series. Now we have the luxury of losing 2 of 3 against the Godlike Angels. Not that I think they will lose 2/3 but it’s always tough against LAA, especially at home.

Assuming the scores hold up, we’ll be 3.5 infront of the Tigers, and tied with Seattle up at the top of the WC.

    Great Weekend of Yankee Baseball.

  663. SJ44 August 19th, 2007 at 4:26 pm

Cashman remaking the bench and the bullpen at the deadline has madethis team, much, much better.

Instead of avoiding playing certain players, you can play matchups and hunches a lot more.

Plus, its added more energy to the team. Its now a fun team to watch play. As opposed to earlier in the year when it was like watching an Old Timers Day Game.

Probably will be Ron Villone to pitch the 9th. He should be able to hold a 6 run lead and it gives everyone else in the ‘pen the day off.

  664. CB August 19th, 2007 at 4:26 pm

Huge hit right there. With the emergence of Joba and hopefully a contribution from Edwar how good does that Proctor trade look?

You look at nearly every major weakness this team had (and there were a lot of them) Cash addressed every single one systematically.

The bench on this teams has gone from an awful weakness to major strength. Having a player like Betemit available to give jeter a break is fantastic. He’s looked ok in the field as well.

  665. Chicago Dave August 19th, 2007 at 4:26 pm

Great to see Joe actually use Edwar today…Perhaps he is slowly changing his philosophy about using the younger guys? Hope so…

  666. corsari August 19th, 2007 at 4:27 pm

Betemit has already had many big hits in his first few weeks as a Yankee. With his age and potential I really love that trade by Cashman, even though I really liked Proctor.

  667. dontfirecash August 19th, 2007 at 4:27 pm

I still consider the Yanks two behind Seattle; The loss column is all that matters.

  668. Rob August 19th, 2007 at 4:28 pm

quinn, i don’t think that was a day-o chant. i believe that was the Hip Hip Jorge chant from the commercial he did. unless i missed something.

Joba the hutt i believe is also his actual nickname from college and the minors so it’s nothing horrible if said by the red sox fans.

  669. Wouter August 19th, 2007 at 4:28 pm

    Edwar is still in!

It’s official: Joe Torre reads this blog.

Meanwhile, how pathetic are the White Sox? Seattle already up 3-0.

  670. Jonathon August 19th, 2007 at 4:28 pm

One more out and Thursday night and losing three in a row will be a distant memory. Please build on this series and have a good road trip…

  671. jennifer August 19th, 2007 at 4:28 pm

They played 2 less games than us.

  672. SJ44 August 19th, 2007 at 4:28 pm

I think Torre learned his lesson about Edwar. Now, we have to hope he doesn’t “Proctor” him! lol

This has to be huge for Edwar’s confidence. You have to be one tough kid, mentally, to bounce back from the shelling he took earlier in the year.

Its great to see he has that type of toughness in him. It will serve him well in his career.

  673. Ron August 19th, 2007 at 4:29 pm

All we need right now is Britton the Hutt. And summary execution or trade for Kyle Farnsworth.

  674. Brandon August 19th, 2007 at 4:29 pm

Man seriously Wilson Betemit doesn’t get enough love that man just saved Joba and Mo for the LAA series. Edwar needs to pitch more too.

    GREAT WIN !!!

  675. Chicago Dave August 19th, 2007 at 4:30 pm

How disappointing…No more Ks in the ninth. (I’m absolutely kidding, of course!!!)

  676. jennifer August 19th, 2007 at 4:30 pm

Well we won the series. And hopefully we will be on our way to Cali before the Angels.

  677. dontfirecash August 19th, 2007 at 4:30 pm

Yeah but you can’t make up games in the loss column.

  678. Carmine August 19th, 2007 at 4:30 pm

Well, Edwar pitched very well in the 9th. Probably wasn’t enough time to get someone else warm in time. I was just thinking since Henn hasn’t pitched since he got called up.

  679. J-Dawg August 19th, 2007 at 4:30 pm

All right!!! These have been three feel-good victories!!!

  680. quinn August 19th, 2007 at 4:30 pm

the “day-O” chant is taken from a harry belafonte song. it’s kinda reggae. the clip is played & the crowd repeats it. i really hope when the new stadium opens, they stop doing the chant.

  681. Rebecca August 19th, 2007 at 4:31 pm

    Reasons to absolutley love today:

Wang wasn’t on his game today, but somehow managed to keep the Yankees in it.

Yankees came through in a big way with two out.

The bottom of the Yankee order, Betemit and Phillips(!!) killed the Tigers.

Our bullpen was literally unhittable today.

We took three out of four from Detroit after losing Game one. In fact, if not for Mussina’s craptastic first inning in that game, we would have swept.

Oh, and the Angels are (somehow) still up 3-0 on Boston.

  682. barbados August 19th, 2007 at 4:31 pm

gotta love Edwar’s ERA dropping by .6 every time he gets an out.

  683. Ron August 19th, 2007 at 4:31 pm

The Mariners will take care of the loss column. The Yankees need to address the win column.

  684. Brandon August 19th, 2007 at 4:32 pm

Edwar Ramirez ERA Watch is now at

    5.40

    TAKE THAT PETE !!!!..LOL

  685. jennifer August 19th, 2007 at 4:32 pm

Ugh this week the games are 10pm games :( I won’t be able to watch most of them, after not watching games this weekend. :( I think the past 2 weeks are the most games i’ve missed in a year.

  686. Chicago Dave August 19th, 2007 at 4:32 pm

Taking 3 of 4 from Detroit was huge in light of the pitching matchups in the upcoming Angels series…They sure as heck don’t favor the Yanks!

  687. Global Warming August 19th, 2007 at 4:33 pm

Bring up Chris “Great” Britton and this bullpen is complete.

  688. jennifer August 19th, 2007 at 4:33 pm

The angels are giving the game back as we speak!

  689. Rebecca August 19th, 2007 at 4:34 pm

Am so not loving the Angels’ Pen today.

  690. CB August 19th, 2007 at 4:34 pm

Going into any 4 games series in which Justin Verlander is throwing is difficult because for that game you’re really behind the 8 ball.

Practically speaking 3 out of 4 was all you could hope to expect and the Yankees executed.

The momentum of this game completely changed in the 7nth with Joba. The Sheff, Ordonez and Guillen are just about as good as any three hitters in a row in baseball. Joba made them look silly for a second straight time.

And in this series it wasn’t really the offense that did it.

Andy, Rocket, and the were outstanding. Even Farnsworth made a contribution in a big spot.

With these last two appearances I think Edwar is going to enter the Torre circle of trust.

None of this its ok to lose 2 out of 3 from the Angels. With Seattle playing so well they need to win that Angels series. They are 2 behind in the loss column.

I think Phil throws a very big game tomorrow.

  691. Jim Clark August 19th, 2007 at 4:34 pm

calypso is the term used to describe Harry Belafonte’s music

  692. Ron August 19th, 2007 at 4:34 pm

There are only three certainties in life: Death, Taxes, and the Angels losing to the Red Sox in Fenway Park.

  693. J-Dawg August 19th, 2007 at 4:34 pm

Scot Shields gives us fits but he cannot handle the Red Sox! UGH!

  694. hh August 19th, 2007 at 4:35 pm

    Great win for the Yankees…

What is with Shields not being able to pitch to Boston… have the YAnkees even registered a hit against him ever? I don’t get how the Angels consistently are choking late against the Sox…At least they are burning the pen for tomorrow night’s game, but jesus this is painful to watch on Gameday

  695. Marius August 19th, 2007 at 4:35 pm

We swept the Indians. Took 3 out of 4 from the Tigers.
This is looking quite nice. The Yankees can win games against above .500 teams. They just can’t win against the Orioles.

  696. Jonathon August 19th, 2007 at 4:35 pm

In a way, I kinda hope the Red Sox tie the Angels and they go deep into extra innings…the Angels don’t get to the West Coast until late tonight and are worn out for the game tomorrow…btw 2 on, 2 out and a run in for the Sox in the 8th, 3-1 Angels

  697. E-ROC August 19th, 2007 at 4:36 pm

Nice win for the Yankees. Win a game and save Rivera and Viz for the Angels series. Jeter got a complete day off. “I don’t know what my role is on this team” homered today. Hopefully, Wang can clip that nail and regain his magic.

  698. YankeeJosh August 19th, 2007 at 4:36 pm

    dontfirecash

I agree that the loss column is more important, but I don’t think it is the all defining. It is more important because that is the column the team the Yanks have control of. You can make up games in the loss column but it is dependent on the other team losing. Given that Seattle has to go to Minnesota, then Texas, then home to play Anaheim, then to Cleveland for a make-up game, then to Toronto all without an off day, we should be able to make up some ground in the loss column.

  699. Rebecca August 19th, 2007 at 4:37 pm

CB: Phil’s been downright NASTY on the road. I have high hopes.

  700. Brandon August 19th, 2007 at 4:37 pm

we need Betemit play vs LAA 1B or DH what does everyone think, I love his approach today it was rust and he still got 3 RBIs and 2 hits.

  701. Chicago Dave August 19th, 2007 at 4:38 pm

Harry Belafonte is cool in my book…although that “Day-O” chant is annoying!

  702. Yankee Boy August 19th, 2007 at 4:38 pm

Cashman forced Torre’s hand by taking away his toys.

Yankees also signed Justin Christian out of indy leagues.

Someone please tell the ledge jumpers they can come back in now.

  703. J-Dawg August 19th, 2007 at 4:38 pm

Angels up 3-1 after 8. J.D. Drew struck out to end the inning!

  704. james August 19th, 2007 at 4:38 pm

everyones throwing well in the bullpen so lets trade farnsworth to the mets and ruin their season/post season chances for some low a ball prospect(s) so if the are comers in a couple of years we can rub it in the fat stupid met fan faces

  705. Jonathon August 19th, 2007 at 4:39 pm

Honestly can’t worry about other teams right now and what they are doing. The Yankees have to win. Plus they’ve got three coming up against Seattle at the Stadium…I don’t care what Seattle does, as long as the Yankees continue to win series..the loss column, the win column you can’t worry about it in August.

  706. Chicago Dave August 19th, 2007 at 4:39 pm

Can the Angels hold a two-run lead for one more inning?!

  707. BX 12 Fordham Road August 19th, 2007 at 4:40 pm

  708. Hobs August 19th, 2007 at 4:40 pm

    Everybody don’t panic:

    Gagne is pitching.

  709. . August 19th, 2007 at 4:40 pm

I just don’t see us catching up to Seattle given that they have 37 games left against the White Sox.

  710. Wouter August 19th, 2007 at 4:40 pm

Gagne now in for Boston, the first pitch is lined for a single…

  711. BX 12 Fordham Road August 19th, 2007 at 4:41 pm

    GAGNE in and gets ripped….nice

  712. Chicago Dave August 19th, 2007 at 4:41 pm

Gagne comes in and surrenders a hit on his first pitch…This is great stuff!!!

  713. CB August 19th, 2007 at 4:41 pm

    Rebecca,

I think he’ll be very engergized in front of his family/ friends. He grew up like 10 minutes from the stadium.

I just think Phil needs to build up his arm strength again. Last year at Trenton he was better at the end of the year and throwing harder than he was at the beginning.

I think he’s got the mental makeup to not let going home get to him. He doesn’t walk many people at all when he’s on and that’s a big plus against the angels.

And now the pen is very well rested. Enormous game today not only for the outcome but for how it was played.

  714. Ron August 19th, 2007 at 4:41 pm

Why even bother asking for prospects in a Farnsworth deal? How about a fungo bat?

  715. Jonathon August 19th, 2007 at 4:41 pm

The ‘Day-O’ chant and anyone trying to start the wave should be banned from the new Yankee Stadium.

There is nothing more aggravating to me than to see the f’in wave going around a stadium in a big moment in a game…2 on, 2 out, 8th inning, tying run at the plate and moron fans are doing the wave…drives me nuts.

    True Chicago Dave…

  737. foobar August 19th, 2007 at 4:52 pm

wow…CMW gave his 7th quality start in 10 outings. That’s as good as what Josh Beckett and better than what Halladay Bonderman & Verlander had done their past 10 starts, and you guys are on him like he’s Kei Igawa. In the whole league only Santana Sabathia & Haren have been the aces on a tear. Looks like you’re just spoiled expecting every start to be a dominant start…he’s not Santana and no one’s pretending him to be. Even Joba will give up a run or blow a save or two somewhere down his career folks, take a chill pill.

  738. Top Cat August 19th, 2007 at 4:53 pm

  739. BX 12 Fordham Road August 19th, 2007 at 4:53 pm

  740. Jonathon August 19th, 2007 at 4:54 pm

Right on jennifer…take that wave someplace else!!!!

  741. Ron August 19th, 2007 at 4:54 pm

Foobar, did you even watch the game? He needed a tremendous amount of luck to get a QS. That’s not what you want from your ace. He couldn’t find his sinker at all, and relied on his slider to get big outs.

That’s cause for concern, win or no win.

  742. BX 12 Fordham Road August 19th, 2007 at 4:54 pm

    Jennifer-

you are correct, especially with Shea being an open sewer of a ballpark..the wave works well there…

  743. Joe August 19th, 2007 at 4:55 pm

Joba’s song should be Nebraska by Springsteen.

It’s a song about a killer from Lincoln, Nebraska (like Joba) who blows everyone away (like Joba).

In addition, Springsteen & Joba share the same birthday.

  744. Jonathon August 19th, 2007 at 4:55 pm

Awesome K.Rod pitches today…that might take him out of the game tomorrow…How big was Betemit’s double…it keeps Mariano out of this game and maybe helps for tomorrow.

  745. jennifer August 19th, 2007 at 4:56 pm

  751. quinn August 19th, 2007 at 4:59 pm

    drew’s the bigger bust

  752. Chicago Dave August 19th, 2007 at 5:00 pm

I like Wang, but he will never be an ace. He allows far too many guys on base, and has way too many “problem” innings (i.e. innings where he throws a lot of pitches and really labors to get through) to be called an ace. Ideally, I think he’s a number 3. Hey, but if Hughes and Chamberlain end up being the starters they’re projected to be, then they’ll be the 1-2 guys, so Wang at # 3 will do quite nicely!

  753. foobar August 19th, 2007 at 5:00 pm

of course…since the last out in the 6th inning was a line drive, and like a ML pitcher CMW had to make adjustments and switch to a slider since his sinker wasn’t working today…he’s a bum, perhaps Yanks should trade/demote him…

No one’s arguing he hasn’t been sharp. But this is absolute overreaction…just like with Mo.

  754. In the Thicke Of it August 19th, 2007 at 5:00 pm

White Sox just made it 5-2.

  759. Chicago Dave August 19th, 2007 at 5:01 pm

We have a much tougher schedule than Boston does the rest of the way. While I’d love to catch them, I think scaring them might be the best we can do…

  760. jennifer August 19th, 2007 at 5:01 pm

Until we lose another game. You know we will, and they will be back.

  761. foobar August 19th, 2007 at 5:06 pm

anyway…switching topics…what got into the mariners…at this pace the Yanks may have a better chance catching the Angels for the WC…

and did Santana ask out…yeah the pitch count was getting up there…but he just struck out the side and should’ve been at least given the chance to tie the record.

  762. jennifer August 19th, 2007 at 5:08 pm

Edwar looks very wirey!! He’s very skinny.

  763. The D train August 19th, 2007 at 5:09 pm

How do you sit and watch 10.5 games fly out the window ? Easy, just be Boston.
    The masters at it.

  764. In the Thicke Of it August 19th, 2007 at 5:09 pm

Mark my words…when the Red Sox return to Fenway after their upcoming road trip, they will no longer be a division leader…..Yankees are going 10-1 in the next 11 games…During that same time, Boston will be LUCKY to go 4-7…so when the clock strikes midnight on August ( on the eve of the 31st ) expect the Yankees to be in the lead by at least 3 games….MAN did Joba and Edwar look good today, or what ?

  765. BBFan August 19th, 2007 at 5:10 pm

    Mission accomplished!

After the Orioles series, I said that we need to gain a game each week on Boston. We did this week. Let us continue this trend.

Also, there was lot of talk in the media and as well as on this blog, whenther Yanks can maintain the level of success they had against sub-500 teams since all start break.

Well, up until now, it has been proven they can and very well as well. Since the the start of Cleveland series, the record is 7-3 that is .700 ball. In fact, I like the fact that they won 3 aginst Detroit and lost 2 to Orioles. Losing to orioles does not hurt as they are going nowhere. Winning against Detroit pushes them back in the WC standings.

Let us keep the faith. By the end of this month, we should take the lead in WC and probably only 2 games behind Boston.

    Exciting times.

  766. Carmine August 19th, 2007 at 5:11 pm

It’s gonna be tough to go 10-1 when we start the road trip in Anaheim and are lucky enough to catch Lackey and Escobar for 2 of the 3 games.

As a second point, I hope that X W/L discussion we had before turns out to be right, as it has the Yankees even with Boston and the Mariners barely over .500

  767. In the Thicke Of it August 19th, 2007 at 5:13 pm

Chicago Dave …prepare to be incorrect…which is sad for me to say, because I too am from Chicago originally….the Red Sox are gonna fall flat on their faced this road trip….it WILL happen…

  768. Chicago Dave August 19th, 2007 at 5:15 pm

In the Thicke – Hey, don’t get me wrong, I’d love to see that happen!

    10-1? whaaaat?!

  770. BBFan August 19th, 2007 at 5:25 pm

I think the bullpen make over is nearly complete.

With ever reliable Mo, Vizcaino’s steadiness, Joba’s greatness, Edwar’s winning Torre’s trust and believe it or not the turn around of Fransworth, the bullpen looks great. For those who hate Fransworth, he is not going any where this season. He is going to help the team. From the left side Villone and Henn are not that bad.

The good things is that Torre does not have any special toys, especially with Joba rules. Also, with every one doing thier jobs right, Torre does not have to resort to just one or two in the bullpen.

And the starters are steady as well.

    The bench has been great.

So, the makeover of the team is complete. Now all that is needed is good execution by the players, the coaches and the manager. Let us hope we do not get hit with the injury bug.

I fully expect the Yanks to win the division in the early last week of the regular season. I know there are still some doubters. There were lot of doubters in the past who said that Yanks were dead and will not make the playoffs. I never doubted thier loyalty to Yankees, but they are getting proven wrong.

Actually, this year is shaping as a special year. We have as good a shot at WS as any team out there.

  771. Doreen August 19th, 2007 at 5:31 pm

Saw Damon’s homerun, and then sat on the NJ Turnpike, getting home in time to see the high-fives after the game. It sounds like Joba & Edwar were amazing today. I’m really happy for Edwar, especially. I’ll have to watch the replay tomorrow a.m. (or should I say the “encore”).

This is a great team to watch right now.

  772. BBFan August 19th, 2007 at 5:35 pm

Seattle is proving that they are a very resilent team. After today, they will be only 2 games behind Angels.
    The

Angels have to be very concerned about Sealltle for the division race.

Because of that, the WC race will be very tight too.

  773. Chevy August 19th, 2007 at 5:38 pm

–”It’s gonna be tough to go 10-1 when we start the road trip in Anaheim and are lucky enough to catch Lackey and Escobar for 2 of the 3 games.”

meanwhile, for the next pair of series, Seattle will joyride to Minnesota (avoiding Santana) then hop on to Texas. The good life continues for the Mariners and their Ichi-on-a-roll fans.

  776. PBL August 19th, 2007 at 6:00 pm

Whoever says Wang will never be an ace does not know what they are talking about. He was 2nd in the cy young voting next year and has been our most dependable pitcher since coming up to the team in the toughest division in the majors. the kid has hit one slump, while injured, with his best friend just getting dfa’d. he will come around and you will be back on the banwagon talking about how he deserves to win the cy young and get a 20 year contract extension because he’s thrown three good games in a row.

  777. PBL August 19th, 2007 at 6:01 pm

    * last year, regardless, second in cy young voting his first full year in the majors and people are saying he can never be an ace. ridiculous

  778. Bob Michaels August 19th, 2007 at 6:33 pm

Yankees should give Edwar extra meal money for every strikeout.

  779. Doreen August 19th, 2007 at 6:36 pm

    BBFan –

This is, indeed, turning out to be a special year. I would add that that is true whether they get to the WS or not. The excitement of seeing Melky Cabrera really earn the everyday CF job; Phil Hughes’ emergence; Joba!; plus, Edwar, Andy Phillips and, how could I forget, Shelley Duncan — all home grown, all contributing (to say the absolute least), all infusing this team with great energy and, dare I say JOY!

Whatever, and I do mean whatever, happens for the remainder of this season, we are being treated to something that doesn’t happen all that often — a chance to see what the team could be in the very, very near future and for several years to come. It’s fun. Plain and simple. Fun.

  780. Rebecca August 19th, 2007 at 6:45 pm

Talk about home grown: On the Yankees current 25-man roster,

Posada, Phillips, Duncan, Cano, Jeter, Melky, Hughes, Pettite, Wang, Mo, Joba, Ramirez…all home grown (there’s one more, I think it’s Henn, but I’m not sure).

That’s crazy, isn’t it? It’s HALF of their roster!

  781. stuart August 19th, 2007 at 6:48 pm

    13 of 25 are homegrown….
    not bad…..

  782. jennifer August 19th, 2007 at 6:54 pm

Rebecca I guess the haters arguement is out the window than. :D

  783. Ross August 19th, 2007 at 6:57 pm

edwar isn’t homegrown, he came from the angels organization

  784. mike August 19th, 2007 at 6:59 pm

    hughes vs mosely
    moose vs escobar
    pettite vs lackey

    i say 2 out of 3

  785. Rebecca August 19th, 2007 at 7:03 pm

Ross–Ah, thought he was. Still, though, it’s quite a list…

  786. Doreen August 19th, 2007 at 7:03 pm

    Rebecca –

It’s incredible! I DARE anyone to accuse the Yankees of buying their pennants going forward!

  787. Rebecca August 19th, 2007 at 7:09 pm

    Doreen–I know!

If you come up with a list lof home grown, versus non home grown, you could field an entire team with the exception of 3b and LF with home grown players, including the ‘Pen!

Seriously, when Tabata and Jackson come up, the Yankees fould field–and contend with–a team of entirely home grown prospects, with the exception of one infielder.

When was the last time anyone did that?

  788. Boston Dave August 19th, 2007 at 7:12 pm

hey Ron, you catch Damon today?? I thought you had declared him incapable of getting any more hits and certainly not homers?

I know it’s just one game but I think you’re going to be wrong on this one.

  789. Doreen August 19th, 2007 at 7:13 pm

Edwar came from the Angels’ organization, but didn’t the Yankees get him after he was out of the Angels’ system? From a Dominican league or something? Anyway, he also had to go through the Yankee organization. I think he could qualify — especially since there are some things I’ve read that consider Matsui to be ‘homegrown’ — though I thoroughly disagree with that one. Home-scouted, maybe!

  790. Mark August 19th, 2007 at 7:15 pm

    Doreen:

The days of the Yankees just going out and signing every marquee player in sight are done. Just a key free agent here and there like Johan Santana when the need calls for it.

  791. Doreen August 19th, 2007 at 7:26 pm

    Mark -

    Allelluia!

  792. james August 19th, 2007 at 7:34 pm

If Seattle keeps winning and we keep winning maybe we can knock the Angels and Red Sox out of the playoffs with Detroit and Cleavland and we wont have to listen people blabber on about how the Angels have our number and well F Boston

  793. Rebecca August 19th, 2007 at 7:37 pm

james: That would be nice, wouldn’t it?

  794. Doreen August 19th, 2007 at 7:37 pm

    James –

That scenario would just blow so many people out of the water — Yankees/Seattle winning their division; Cleveland and Detroit battling it out to the end; the WC being either the Angels, Boston, Detroit or Cleveland. And you can never really discount Minnesota, can you??????

  795. Rebecca August 19th, 2007 at 7:47 pm

And people think the NL’s crazy!

  796. Boston Dave August 19th, 2007 at 7:48 pm

ideal scenario – yanks win east and home field, detroit wins central, seattle wins west, cleveland wins wild card… highly unlikely but definitely possible. yanks vs seattle in the ALCS.

  797. stuart August 19th, 2007 at 7:55 pm

Edwar is homegrown. he was released and signed for the independence league. he was not bought or traded for..the Yankee minor leagues helped turn him around even if he did it on his own…

melky, jeter, jorge, phillips, and cano 5 of the starting 9. add duncan and that is 6 guys. then we have andy, mariano, hughes, joba, henn, edwar, and wang that is 13..
boston has like 6 guys developed in house, I know the trolls will tell you they have better prospects but to be honest I do not believe them..

the yanks have 10 legit prospects; tabata, jackson, kennedy, horne, britton, etc. still down on the farm.. damn Bruney pitched good last yr and is 25yrs old….

  798. Doreen August 19th, 2007 at 8:03 pm

    Stuart –

Thanks — I thought that was the case with Edwar.

  799. Kj August 19th, 2007 at 8:03 pm

I dont know how you can say 2 of 3 for the Yanks after looking at the pitching matchups. I think the Escobar vs Moose game could get real ugly for us. As a Yankee fan I dont fear playing anyone anywhere. UNLESS they are playing the Angles out in Anaheim.

  800. Doreen August 19th, 2007 at 8:06 pm

    Kj–

Escobar and Lackey are tough. I think 1/3 will be good; but, you never know. Anyway, after a good Yankee win, and especially winning a 3/4 series, spirits get awfully high here, haven’t you noticed?

  801. Rebecca August 19th, 2007 at 8:07 pm

KJ–Phil’s been NASTY on the road, and Pettite is, well, Pettite.

They’re not going to be easy, but they ARE winnable games.

Just hope that Moose pitches on a day when Boston loses…

  802. yanks fan in austin August 19th, 2007 at 8:10 pm

edwar’s homegrown. the angels gave up on edwar and we took him off the scrapheap. got to get credit for developing him. kind of like a foster child.

and i vote to keep day-o and ban the wave. i just love yelling day-o. i even do it at home.

  803. * * THEE BOSTON BUGLE * * August 19th, 2007 at 8:19 pm

Watching Boston fold their tent is so easy, a caveman could do it.

  804. SJ44 August 19th, 2007 at 8:19 pm

I was anxious to hear the post-game comments from Torre and I thought they were very telling.

You can tell he was ticked off at Wang today. As he should be.

He really melted down on the mound today with guys on base. No idea why because his stuff was much better than it was his last couple of outings. He just didn’t trust it.

The only other time I remember him melting down on the mound was against the Red Sox in Fenway earlier last year.

IMO, he thinks WAY too much when guys reach base lately. Fortunately, it didn’t cost him the game today but, its something he has to correct.

I really like what Torre had to say about Edwar. Clearly, he realizes the kid, used properly of course, can be a weapon down the stretch.

This is a game they would have needed Mo to finish earlier in the year. We all know what would have happened….

He would have gone to Proctor or Bruney in the 7th and they would have pitched from behind and starting walking people. Then he would have gone to Myers to get a lefty out. Which, of course, he can’t do and he would have failed.

With the score now 9-6, up gets Mo and Viz to save the day, which blows them out for a day or so.

Now, Torre has weapons out there that get outs, don’t walk people, and minimize their pitches. Edwar and Joba finished the last 3 innings of the game in 31 pitches. That’s about 2/3 the pitches of ONE inning of work from Proctor or Bruney.

They have a much, much better bullpen and bench, which is the main reason why the team is much better.

Anaheim is a tough place to play. However, this is a much tougher team than it was before the AS Break.

We need Hughes to come up big tomorrow night because its tough to count on Moose against a good team. But, as they say, that’s why they play the game.

Halfway through this 20 game stretch of tough games and they went 7-3. Hard to quibble at that.

Now, its time to finish strong in the next 10.

  805. PAT M..... August 19th, 2007 at 8:30 pm

Actually the Yanks fair better in Anahiem than they do at home…..I’m going to both Monday & Wednesday night …I hope to catch the Joba show, maybe Wednesday night….Looking forward to seeing to seeing young Master Hughes tomorrow….Haven’t seen him throw since his H.S / Connie Mack days……Seems to me that Pitching Coach Leo Mazzone’s impact in Baltimore is being realized….It took a saeson plus but the impact cannot be denied….As for Seattle, I still say they fade within the next 2-3 weeks…They have 44 games in 45 days vs. some very good teams……Maybe Torre links Joba & Edwar group A, Farnsworth & Viz as group B, being certain guys need to rest 1 day after throwing…..Almost a bullpen rotation……

  806. Garbriel August 19th, 2007 at 8:34 pm

these Yankees fear no team…..80-55 at the end of the month is doable…have faith !

  807. susan mullen August 19th, 2007 at 8:50 pm

John Sterling said Scott Boras sits directly behind home plate and attends every Angels game. So if anyone wants to pitch their business for Arod, that’s where his agent will be.

  808. PAT M..... August 19th, 2007 at 8:52 pm

I see him at least every other month as he brings his Escalade to my dealership……Liscense Plate….AGENT 1

  809. This Year August 19th, 2007 at 8:56 pm

Actually, the “hard” part of the schedule started with Toronto. Counting that, so far we are 9-4. Let’s hope the usual southern Californian demons stay away and we can keep it up.

  810. This Year August 19th, 2007 at 8:58 pm

Hey, SJ, remember our debate about Edwar and minor league stats? Assume you are a believer now.

  811. Nick August 19th, 2007 at 8:58 pm

I’m going tomorrow, can’t wait to see Hughes pitch.

  812. This Year August 19th, 2007 at 8:59 pm

BTW, remember the name Dan McCutchen. Just when you thought the top pitching prospects were being exhausted….

  813. PAT M..... August 19th, 2007 at 9:02 pm

Nick, are you sitting on the Yankee side ( 1st base )…..One other side note on Boras…When I founded the Newport Beach Costa Mesa Youth Baesball foundation, he always wrote a check for 15 grand…..Very supportive for the local youth baseball programs…..Then again he’s grossed over 100 mil over the years……

  814. Garbriel August 19th, 2007 at 10:18 pm

I am with any scenario that puts NY as division champs and World Champs and leaves Boston OUT of the postseason !

  815. Shirley August 21st, 2007 at 1:15 am

Yes! Farnsworth! I almost had a heart attack.

  816. Shirley August 21st, 2007 at 1:29 am

Oh, “Yes! Farnsworth! I almost had a heart attack.” should be for game 125 against Angles, not this one.
