Greetings from Comerica Park

Peter Abraham
August
24

Contrary to some reports, the Yankees did not sign Dominican prospect Edward Salcedo. In fact, they never were involved.

Meanwhile, it’s sunny at Comerica Park at the moment but there’s a chance of thunderstorms at game time.

Finally, thanks to those folks who e-mailed the MP3 of Bruce Springsteen’s Radio Nowhere. It sounds terrific, good guitar-driven rock.

hey all, I live in chicago, and for those who are wondering if the red soxs will play today, think again. we got hit yesterday with a bunch of storms and it strated raining again. I think that game will be called and the red soxs will have to scramble to find pitching to play back to back double headers i guess….for this is their only visit to chicago. Hopefully this will only help us yanks

  2. Bob

    they’re playing right now.

  3. Jimmy the Saint

    Broooooceeeeeeeeeee!!

Has anyone heard if there are plans to start Joba this season at all(if Mussina can’t get it together)? Or is it just wishful thinking from some quarters?

  4. fratboys4redsucks

right, as i posted that, the sun came out…But trust me, i think they will get a ton of delays. Its been hell here in chicago

  5. hmmm

    who did sign him Pete?

  6. The Godfather

If the Yankees didn’t get Salcedo did he sign with someone else?

  7. Phil

If they put this much care into Joba with the Joba Rules…there is no way they would now turn around and start stretching him out to start in Mussina’s place. If not Moose, it looks like Igawa, Kennedy, or Hughes.

  8. DMan77

I heard that Seattle was one of the front runners for Salcedo.. But I haven’t seen anything confirming if anybodys signed him yet

  9. Phil

Prospect Insider says Boras is holding out for $5M while the bids have been coming in around $3M.

  10. Go NYR

Sox and Sox tied at 1, Beckett hasnt topped 89 on the NESN gun. Not sure if its wrong or Beckett is hurt. I think the gun is off today.

  11. saucy

i almost believe internet rumors before i believe cashman these days.

  12. Brandon

Horrible news on Salcedo if true. The Yankees need to plan for life w/o Derek Jeter. Before someone tells me this is a stupid comment, Yes they do !

  13. Go NYR

Brandon- Its not a bad comment at all. We have to realize that Jeter cant play forever and that as he gets older, he might have to play first base or DH. A 16 year old like Salcedo would be a good thing to have, but I wouldnt call NOT signing a 16 year old for 5 million dollars horrible

  14. asburyboss

Pete…bruce Springsteen’s lawyers are on line 1- you wanna take that in your office?

Carmen Angellini is the plan for AJ (After Jeter)

  15. Bloomy

They can sign 10 Latin American players for that 5 mill. Unless they are convinced that this Salcedo is an all star its better to go with quanitity on that market.

But the system does need impact bats.

  16. asburyboss

can anybody hook me up with the mp3 of radio nowhere? cmon…

  17. Mexican Mafia

Leave Joba right where he is.

    Dominating the 7th and 8th.

  18. Go NYR

Beckett has 72 pitches in 3 innings

  19. SJ44

A 16 year old kid, who may grow out of position, is not “planning for life w/o Derek Jeter”. Especially one who could be 6 years away from the majors.

Let’s not get carried away with the “horrible news” stuff.

“Horrible news” is if Joba Chamberlain gets hurt. Not signing a 16 year old kid, whom none of us know anything about, is not “horrible news”.

A kid that young, and that big, grows into an OF before he stays at SS.

Will be interesting to see who ends up signing him if its not the Yankees.

  20. Don Vito Bellamo

King of All J@ck@$$e$ already at 72 pitches and he has only pitched 3 innings…..1-1 ChiSox leading the BoSux… LOL !

  21. Don Vito Bellamo

Dang….BoSux clown Shredded Wheat just singled into left !…DANG !

  22. Loren

Maybe the Yanks should go to 5 for Salcedo.

You can never have enough talent.

This team spent 26 mill just to talk to Igawa.

5 for a prized 16 yr old doesnt seem like much

  23. West Coast Fan

    who’s Bruce?

  24. Luke

I’m in Grand Rapids, MI and it’s been raining most of the day…It’ll be there in 2 hours Pete

  25. Brian F

I’ll believe not involved once he signs with someone not named Yankees.

  26. SJ44

Why go to 5 million when they just signed Carmen Angelini for one million? I don’t know if any 16 year old prospect who is worth 5 million dollars.

Not even Arod was worth 5 million at 16 and he may have been the best 16 year old talent in the last 30 years.

That’s a lot of coin for an unknown. Since nobody else has paid it, perhaps its too much for this kid.

  27. Go NYR

weather.com says scattered strong storms. hopefully it doesnt get rained out

  28. Brandon

SJ44 in the Dominican Republic the kid is the real deal. I even called my friends & family out there they always stay close to latin scouts out there, the word beast w/ the bat, and slick always comes to mind w/ him, this isn’t a hype job Scott Boras found himself a golden nugget at 16.

  29. Mario

You can’t kill them for not going to 5 mill.

Remember WIlly Mo Pen and Jackson Melian??

  30. barnsy

The kid is supposedly the real deal and the Yankees will not be able to draft players like this. They have to get involved and step up. Who cares if hes a bust? If hes a star it pays for itself times hundred in the long run.

This is where they have to do their damage. They should go after every top talent that is a FA. They won’t be able to draft the Uptons of the world because they won’t have picks that high.

  31. asburyboss

never mind, my friens at YOUTUBE already have it up

  32. 38disasters.com

if u give boras 5 bones now, he will ask for 7 next time, and then 10, and then on and on till the market collapses.

  33. Flood

They haven’t gotten out of the running yet either.

    Keep that in mind.

  34. Parker

“Why go to 5 million when they just signed Carmen Angelini for one million?”

You can’t have enough talent in the system. As we proved the past 10 years.

If it costs 5, it costs 5. You got to gamble. May as well be on talent.

  35. Luke

    he’s 6-freakin-teen!
This isn’t the NBA…he’s at least 5 years away even if he is amazing…A lot can happen in 5 years.

  36. kasey

sooo…if anyone is feeling generous and wants to email the “radio nowhere” mp3 to the pessimistic yankees fan you all love to hate, i’m at kasey@kaseyanderson.com

feel free to fill the email with expletives and ill wishes. as long as the mp3’s attached, i’ll be set.

    garland’s falling apart.

  37. Big Johnson

“You can’t kill them for not going to 5 mill.”

I can think of much better ways to spend 5 million than pay some punk 16 year old. How about you make a giant bonfire outside yankee stadium so the local bums can stay warm for one night.

Let Boras sign this child for 5 million somewhere else for that waste of money so we can all have a great laugh. There is a 99.999999999999999% chance he wont develop into anything at all at this point.

I have some excellent recruits to sell Boras on our local little league team. Sheesh, the nonsense never seems to end.

    BJ

  38. Huuz

i’m 30 miles from detroit, and things are looking OK so far with the weather, but i has been raining all week after a very dry summer…fwiw

  39. J-Dawg

The White Sox are just a total car wreck right now!

  40. SJ44

Don’t get sucked into the hype Brandon.

Everybody is “worth it” in the prospect game. If you listen to scouts in the DR, who want these kids signed, all of them are the “real deal”. They get paid to get these kids signed.

He’s 16. He may be a very good prospect. But, NOBODY knows if he is the “real deal” or not.

What kind of competition has he played against? How many good pitchers, at his age, has he faced? How has he done on traveling teams? Has he ever been on a traveling team? How has he done at combines/camps? None of us know the answers to those questions.

The answers to those questions, not somebody’s hyping of the kid, determine how good he is in the minds of ML teams.

There is nobody better at hype than Scott Boras. Its why he is the best in the business. He got Barry Zito 128 million dollars and Barry Zito wasn’t worth the “hype”.

He may be a very good prospect. He may be the next “Great One”. Or, he may be Jackson Melien. However, if he was worth 5 million dollars, somebody would have already paid it because the entire industry is awash with cash.

Let’s see where he signs, how much he signs for, and how he does, before we declare him the “real deal”.

  41. cj

5-1, the bloody sox are up.

  42. Big Johnson

“If it costs 5, it costs 5. You got to gamble. May as well be on talent.”

Lets buy up all the local T-Ball talent in the south bronx now. We could probably pay much less than 5 million a head, and it will give us a tremendous pool of potential talent.

    BJ

  43. Luke

    Huuz…Where are you?
It’s been on and off pouring here since 9am…you haven’t gotten any of this crap?

  44. 38disasters.com

we dont gotta buy the bronx talent cuz they most likely all wanna be yankees when they grow up anyway.

  45. Phil

A kid who just turned 16 is close to getting $5M while still years and years away from the bigs…reminds me of USC offering that Boatwright kid a full ride for basketball while he was still in middle school and had never played high school ball.

  46. Brandon

SJ44 he was recently at a camp in Cincinatti , he did a showcase infront of 30 team representatives w/ alot of amateur prospects, he was the only prospect from outside the U.S. at the showcase and was the talk of the pact.

  47. SJ44

Its always nice to spend somebody else’s money, isn’t it?

What if he isn’t worth 5 million? Or 3 million, for that matter? Do you still pay it?

Even the Yankees have a budget. Suppose they evaluated the kid and don’t think he is as good as internet scouts or Scott Boras thinks he is?

Was Craig Hansen worth 4.5 million? Scott Boras and the Red Sox thought so. How has that worked out?

Just because you pass on a kid (if, indeed they pass on him) doesn’t mean the organization is berefit of talent.

Far from it. Take a look at their GCL team. They have several quality, young middle infielders.

Justin Snyder is having a great year in Staten Island. Carmen Angelini may have been the best HS SS in the country.

If they pass on this kid, there are others around. He isn’t the only propsect in the world.

We go through this every year. Next year, someone else will emerge as the “Next (fill in the blank)”.

  48. Carson

    SJ,

How good do you think Carmen Angelini can be? How does his talent compare to Jeter’s when he was 18?

Does he have the body type to stick at SS?

  49. SJ44

He may have been the talk of that camp, but he wasn’t 5 million dollars worth of talk.

I’d rather give the 5 mil to Arod, but, that’s just me.

  50. Brandon

we know that SJ trust me he’s not getting 5 MIL not even the people in D.R. believe it. But don’t doubt his talent it’s for real

  51. asburyboss

oh, that’s right the White Sox suck now…

  52. asburyboss

kasey…youtube and search ‘Springsteen radio nowhere” if you wnat to listen while at work

  53. ND Yank

White Sox lineup is very weak.

  54. Carmine

The White Sox lineup is weak, but they need to realize they have to work the count. Beckett’s at a very high number for where he is and if they’re impatient, they’re doing him and the Red Sox a huge favor not just for the rest of this game, but for Game 2. C’mon, I wanna see the bullpen blow out their arms.

  55. J-Dawg

    Now it’s 5-3.

  56. ND Yank

Fields 2 run jack. 5-3 red sox now. Beckett doesn’t have many pitches left in this game.

  57. Carmine

Fireworks on a run of the mill homerun amuses me.

  58. ND Yank

Then Beckett retires the heart of their lineup on 5 pitches. Nice job White Sox.

  59. SJ44

He may be a very good prospect Brandon but, how much is he worth is the question.

Carmen Angelini was the best HS SS in the country. On pure talent alone, he’s the best SS prospect the Yankees have signed since Derek Jeter. He got a million bucks. That kid is a big time talent.

Even if Salcedo signs for 3 million, that’s 3 times the bonus of Angelini. Is he 3 times the player? I doubt it.

That’s a lot of coin for a kid.

  60. Don Vito Bellamo

Becks*ck at 100 pitches through 5 innings and his team is only up 5-3…things are moving in a direction that I am liking in this game…

  61. yanks fan in motown

i’m a misplaced ny’er living downtown detroit. i’ve been waiting all season 4 this series, got tix 4 tonite…please don’t rain!

  62. Mike R.

Interesting stats BJ. You’re basically saying that 1 in 100,000,000,000,000,000 16 year old Dominican prospects produce enough to merit $5,000,000. Consider that Wang, Cano and Cabrera have all come via IFA. I’m not advocating spending that money on the kid, but I wouldn’t want the reason we didn’t sign him to be “We really liked him but he was too expensive.”

  63. asburyboss

we cheaped out on Marc pryor after drafting him out of high school and then not meeting his demands…at first it looked like a bad move…now? not so much.

  64. Don Vito Bellamo

Joshy over 111 pitches and with 2 outs, let the 8 and 9 ChiSox hitters on base with B2B singles….Tying run is on first base….go ahead run at the plate…bottom of the 6th….I hope they either leave the PUNK in, or we get to see GagMe !!!

  65. J-Dawg

Garland hasn’t had his best stuff today at all, but he has kept the White Sox in the game.

  66. asburyboss

Gagne has to appear in this one or the next one. Beckett only 5 2/3…long way to bottom of 9

  67. J-Dawg

Boston may be saving Gagne as a closer in the 2nd game. That worked out so well last time!!

  68. THU

I was told Jake Donovin said we got Edward Salcedo.

  69. asburyboss

Btw Pete…the title of this post and the Bruce refrence did not go unnoticed.

  70. greenscar

even if salcedo isnt the lightsout player everyone thinks he is hes still a extrmemly valuable commodity.im sure the yankee hype machine will be cranking full bore on this kid.he can even be flpped in a package for a bigtime starter maybe willis or santana or sabathia..i think ts worth the 3-4 million

  71. Bob Michaels

    SALCEDO SI CASTRO NO.
