    SWEEP!

  2. Yanksrule57

I like the Yanks chances for taking the series, but they need to win the first three games to do so. The matchup on Monday with Moose going against Verlander looks bleak!

Maybe Torre’s meeting with Mike will help him get back on track. Rick Petersen was able to get Tom Glavine to change his approach and it led to his success the past couple of years.Tommy doesn’t throw any harder than Moose. I am trying to put a good spin on this and I think Moose is just too set in his ways to try and change stuff at this point in his career. But if he changes his approach he might have a chance to be effective again.

I feel pretty good about what the Rocket can bring tonight. His velocity was up Saturday and the Toronto fiasco seems to have put an extra bounce in his step.

  4. Rob L.

Moose doesn’t trust his stuff. It’s sad to say but I think he won’t finish the season in the rotation.

  5. DammmnnnBlah

Can i start instead of Mussina on Monday?

  6. Porkpoker

Not too long ago Pettitte had two bad outings and he’s bounced back pretty darn well

  7. chris in fairfield

moose vs. verlanderis the lone loss of the series . i have zero confidence in moose .

  8. chris in fairfield

    porkpoker …
moose has had a few good starts but a terrible season overall

  9. Rob NY

Yeah porkpoker it isnt a matter of a few bad outings in an otherwise stellar season with moose….. its more like the reverse of that…. i say thanks moose its been real but its time you ride off into the sunset with your millions and do the crossword somewhere warm.

It’s a shame that the Yankees can’t skip Mussina’s start and start Pettitte (he’ll be on full rest) and bring up Kennedy for the Tuesday start.

  11. SJ44

Yankees are 2-13 on the road this year against lefty starters. That needs to change.

If they take two, I’m happy. Three would be great. Four? Very, very unlikely since they have pretty much taken themselves out of winning Monday’s game with Moose starting.

In addition, with the Red Sox series looming on Tuesday, unless they somehow lose the first 3 in this series, I can’t see them using their “A” relief pitchers on Monday. You want to save them for the Sox series.

Moose is on his own island Monday. Unless something dramatically changes, it may be his final start in the rotation for the Yankees.

  12. SJ44

Why would you skip Andy Pettitte, and start a rookie in his first ML start, against the Red Sox? That would be the worst decision they have made (personnel-wise) all season.

You start your #1 guy against the Red Sox.

The fourth game of the Tigers series is not as important as the first game of the Red Sox series. That’s why Moose isn’t pitching against the Sox.

  13. J-Dawg

I’m very happy that Mussina doesn’t have to face the Red Sox. I like the alignment of Pettitte, Clemens, and Wang for that series. Hopefully winning Sunday’s game will be a confidence booster for Wang tomorrow and for when he pitches against Boston. I think that it will do Wang some good to realize that he can win without his best stuff, because our lineup has got his back.

  14. Bob Michaels

Did the Yankees win the High Stakes Poker Game, by signing Edward Salcedo, the next AROD (Scott Boras). They have won the bid as reported by Peter Gammons on Boston.com for 4.5 million.Perhaps Pete can follow up.

take a look at what they did to the yankee hat. gosh these are ugly.

  16. Bob Michaels

    SJ44

Pettitte, the logical choice to start vs the Red Sox.

  17. SJ44

    Bob,

Exactly. Its a no brainer choice.

IMO, Pettitte is the ace of the staff. He’s pitched that way all year.

  18. eric

anyone hear about that 16 year old international kid the yankees are on the verge of signing? he is represented by scott boras..
    check it out

  19. david

besides the bleak forecast for the Monday game, I’m also a bit wary of Wang and Hughes. They both have great stuff, but have been kinda inconsistent and unreliable.

  20. Andrew

BoSox play a double header today…that means Eric Gagne will most likely be pitching!

  21. mel

    Andrew,

Even though his WHIP is still bad, Gagne got the job done in his last 2 outings. Unfortunately, I don’t think there will be anymore gifts from him. He’s actually got his ERA with Boston down to 11.25. We can keep hoping, though!

Interesting Gagne stat: 10 earned runs in 8IP. Small sample size. Just saying.

  22. ND Yank

    mel,

Gagne was brought to Boston to set up Papelbon and he has failed miserably at that, as well as closing a game when Papelbon was unavailable. They didn’t trade for him to come in and keep it close when they’re losing like he has his last two outings, those are different situations. I understand that those are important innings when its a close game, but he was still brought in to set up and has spit the bit. A few good outings holding leads and that’s a step in the right direction. Until then.

  23. Shdw

    Mel,

You do realize that Gagne “getting it done” in his last two outings means nothing. Gagne has only managed to not give up runs 1 time in all his appearances where Boston has been in the lead when they put him in. If they put him in when they are losing, he usually pitches slightly less crappy but he can’t handle the pressure of holding the game down. Also his last 2 games were against horrible teams.

  24. ND Yank

    Shdw,

1 game vs Angels and 1 game vs Tampa

  25. mel

    ND & Shdw,

Oh guys, I know what you’re talking about, I just was trying to be nice because it’s so GD funny! I also don’t want to tempt the fates.

The reason why I found that Gagne stat so funny is that Joba has also pitched 8 innings…But, you know, small sample size and all that. lol.

  26. Shdw

Ok, I’ll give him the one angels game then but I he also blew it against the angels right before that.

He’s also never managed even one perfect inning as a Red Sock. He’s had at least 1 runner on every single inning.

  27. mel

And while we’re on the subject, I think we can plainly see that Boston did not, in fact, bring Gagne there to set up Papelbon. They had Okajima. They brought him there to block the Yankees and they overbid because they knew we had SERIOUS bullpen problems and would most likely make a serious run. Cashman had an ace in his hand and it worked out beautifully for us. Gagne stinking up the joint makes it even better. Shakespeare couldn’t write a comedy of errors this entertaining. Boston overpaid to fix something that not only wasn’t broken, but was the best bullpen in the league.

  28. Lanny

They now have to bring Gagne in when the games don’t count. Even then it blows up on them. Like him blowing a 5-1 lead.

  29. ND Yank

    mel,

Then how come Francona continued to follow Okajima in games with Gagne to set up Papelbon? He was more of the 8th inning guy and Okajima was the 7th inning guy.

  30. saucy

i agree with mel, they got Gagne to block him from going to the yanks. why they continue to put him in 8th innings is beyond me. he is an investment though and perhaps they don’t want to give up on him all together. they now have a farnsworth.

3 of 4 or no playoffs go yankees
