i agree with mel, they got Gagne to block him from going to the yanks. why they continue to put him in 8th innings is beyond me. he is an investment though and perhaps they don't want to give up on him all together. they now have a farnsworth.

mel,

Then how come Francona continued to follow Okajima in games with Gagne to set up Papelbon? He was more of the 8th inning guy and Okajima was the 7th inning guy.

They now have to bring Gagne in when the games don't count. Even then it blows up on them. Like him blowing a 5-1 lead.

And while we're on the subject, I think we can plainly see that Boston did not, in fact, bring Gagne there to set up Papelbon. They had Okajima. They brought him there to block the Yankees and they overbid because they knew we had SERIOUS bullpen problems and would most likely make a serious run. Cashman had an ace in his hand and it worked out beautifully for us. Gagne stinking up the joint makes it even better. Shakespeare couldn't write a comedy of errors this entertaining. Boston overpaid to fix something that not only wasn't broken, but was the best bullpen in the league.

Ok, I'll give him the one angels game then but I he also blew it against the angels right before that.

He's also never managed even one perfect inning as a Red Sock. He's had at least 1 runner on every single inning.

ND & Shdw,

Oh guys, I know what you're talking about, I just was trying to be nice because it's so GD funny! I also don't want to tempt the fates.

The reason why I found that Gagne stat so funny is that Joba has also pitched 8 innings...But, you know, small sample size and all that. lol.

Mel,

You do realize that Gagne "getting it done" in his last two outings means nothing. Gagne has only managed to not give up runs 1 time in all his appearances where Boston has been in the lead when they put him in. If they put him in when they are losing, he usually pitches slightly less crappy but he can't handle the pressure of holding the game down. Also his last 2 games were against horrible teams.

mel,

Gagne was brought to Boston to set up Papelbon and he has failed miserably at that, as well as closing a game when Papelbon was unavailable. They didn't trade for him to come in and keep it close when they're losing like he has his last two outings, those are different situations. I understand that those are important innings when its a close game, but he was still brought in to set up and has spit the bit. A few good outings holding leads and that's a step in the right direction. Until then.
