Joba Chamberlain and Roger Clemens got to know each other last fall. Now they’re teammates and the rookie is learning a lot from the veteran.

I didn’t get a chance to include this in the story, but Phil Hughes told me something interesting. It seems that Clemens and Andy Pettitte will be taking Hughes and Chamberlain out for dinner sometime soon.

The two “old guys” have taken an interest in the rookies. It makes sense in a lot of ways. Chamberlain and Clemens have similar styles as do Pettitte and Hughes. The Yankees have done a good job of giving their prospects a chance to learn from their marquee players.

Thanks for the good read, Pete. Baseball is such a great game where generations (literally) and competitors can form lasting friendships.

There must be such a good vibe around the team with Pettitte and Clemens there. Just like the good ol’ days.

Pete, when do they make the minor league assignments? Hawaii Winter Baseball is starting up on September 29 already. They’re really proud of having Joba as an alumni and nobody could have foreseen Joba’s meteoric rise to the big leagues. Now that the Yankees have a “decent” farm system and after seeing Joba’s sudden success, anyone the Yankees send will definitely be on the radar immediately. Thanks for any info that comes your way.

    Here’s a link to HWB: http://www.hawaiiwinterbaseball.com/
For you hardcore guys, there’ll be live streaming of the games.

O.K. my first post was the sugar, so here’s the spice.

Something to get you guys bent out of shape:

Take a real good look at the list of candidates and see if any of the names jump out at you. Enjoy!

  3. Greg

    Pete:
    Do you sleep?

  4. Hobs

Sam Horn lives down the road from me. He’s blown so much of his money it’s ridiculous. His roof holds the biggest satellite tv dish you’d ever want to see…cept it belongs to his neighbor who he’s renting the place from…

  5. Stef

Pete, Can you see if you can get an invite to that dinner with the boys and then report back to us on what was said? OK. Thanks. ;)

GREG: Of course he doesn’t sleep. He’s too busy keeping all of us entertained 24/7.

  6. mel

    Hobs,

That’s so sad about Sam Horn. That’s not the name that I was thinking of though…

    Good night, guys!

  7. Hobs

Yeah, I’m figuring you were talking about Gammons…

  8. Lil' Jimmy Norden

Gammons stinks and I dont like him.

Pete, you going to run for presidency of the Yankee Empire? :)

  9. Pete Feng

What a great story. I hope Wang will be able to find new friends soon since Myers are gone. Thanks for your time and hard work, Mr. Abraham.

  10. Chris

Gammons is kidding nobody. He desperately wants to be President of Red Sox nation so he can come out of the closet and announce it on ESPN.
He’ll be bawling his eyes out on gin & tonic.

  11. Pete Feng

What a great story! I hope Wang will be able to find close friends soon since Myers are gone. Thanks for your time and hard work day after day, Mr. Abraham. Because of all these stories you tell us on the board, Yankees’ super stars seem not so far away. Keep up the good work and please get some rest if you can.

  12. chris in fairfield

gammons is a season ticket holder at fenway . he’s a real douche .

  14. Doreen

Pete — Great story on Chamberlain and Clemens. This is one of the reasons why Clemens is worth his contract. This is the something extra. Clemens’ contract: $28 million; Clemens/Pettitte as a mentor to rookie phenoms: priceless.

  15. jennifer

The whole president of Red Sox nation is the biggest joke ever. WHat a load.

  16. jennifer

That is a cool story. Funny how life takes twists and turns.

  17. Loren

This is why the two “old guys” are worth every penny. Not just for good pitching.

gammons is a season ticket holder at fenway . he’s a real douche .

Because he has season tickets at Fenway it makes him a douche?? And he works for ESPN and lives there. Why wouldn’t he have tickets?

The guy is one of the best baseball writers ever. Who cares if he likes the Sox?

  19. chris in fairfield

    i do

  20. jennifer

It is called being an unbiased journalist. I don’t buy that he is.

  21. Don Vito Bellamo

Tigger…here are the things that make Gammons a douche:

    - he IS a douche
    - he is a Sox fan
    - he is a season ticket holdin’ Sox Fan
    - he works for ESPN
    - he lives in Boston
-…oh, yea, and he IS a douche

    OUT !

  22. Andy

If you ever read Gammons you would know he’s an unbiased journo. But that’s above some people.

It’s not like he wears a Sox hat when he’s on ESPN.

  23. neil

Why is Bruney coming back up? He did NOTHING in AAA to redemm himself.

  24. Tigger

So Don Vito all people from Boston are douches according to you?

    Sweet.

Not to mention everyone that works for ESPN.

    Good points.

  25. Andy

Bruney cannot throw strikes. It’s painful to watch.

  26. jennifer

Espn should change their name is nespn.

  27. barnsy

It’s more painful to watch Villone not throw strikes.

  28. Rob from Plainview

Why wouldn’t ESPN analysts be pro Sox right now?

They do have the best record in the game and a 5 game lead. It’s not like these analysts are going to go out on a limb.

Come on. You got them all saying Seattle will make the playoffs.

  29. Don Vito Bellamo

This is exactly why it would be super sweet for the rotation in 2008 to be:

    1-Pettite
    2-Wang
    3-Chamberlain
    4-Hughes
    5-Clemens / Kennedy
( IF Clemens waits again to start the season, then have Kennedy take his place until he arrives AND be ready to step in if/when an injury strikes )
Oh, and by the by, the Moose is retired next year in my perfect world…

  30. Don Vito Bellamo

Rob….check out the last 23 games….Boston is 12-11, while Yankees are 16-7. That 5 game lead won’t hold up if they don’t start playing better. Boston has been playing barely over .500 ball for a very long time now. They are totally “limping” to the finish line. ESPN analysts by definition are all Yankee Hating Doofus Schmanks, but that is purely by definition.

  31. Tim

What does this mean?? Thanks! **His line in those games: 6 5 4 4 2 5.

  32. donnienybasebabeball

don vito…that rotation is a work of art…can’t wait to have JOBA be the starting AL pitcher for the All Star game in the stadium!

  33. J-Dawg

That rotation above for 2008 has the perfect balance of experience and youth that you need these days. Clemens and Pettitte are showing on and off the field why they are worth every penny of their contracts. I think that it is as good as any in the league next year if Moose does retire. It would solve some problems if he does retire. He’s reached that point when he needs to realize that he just can’t pitch well consistently anymore.

And by the way, yes there is a serious anti-Yankee vibe from ESPN analysts. Whenever Boston does something well, all of the analysts trip over each other in a race to see who can be the first to give them credit.

  34. Mehdi

I don’t think Gammons is a douche for liking the Red Sox or having season tickets Hell there are some Yankee fans at the stadium that I can’t stand (a former mayor for example.). Anyhoo, I think Gammons is a douche for predicting that the Yankees would finish 3rd in the division this year.

  35. Adam

I’ve got two words for Clemens and Pettite.

    “Peter Lugers”

  36. Eric

Hahaha, Rich Garces. I would vote for El Guapo.

  37. gianthinker

    That is the Yankee way.

  38. The Rick

There is no anti Yank thing at ESPN. They just root for stories. And the Yanks struggling and the Yanks surviving and the Yanks coming back make for good stories.

  39. J-Dawg

If I wanted to I would be a real jerk and nominate Carl Everett for their president. Those fans hated him when he was a member of the Red Sox. I remember the 2005 playoffs when Everett came back to Fenway as a member of the White Sox and he was still getting booed!

  40. Melee

Would be nice if those veterans gave Wang the same welcome treatment. That poor kid is always sitting by himself!

  41. Bouncy Balls

They should nominate Bucky Dent for President of Red Sox Nation.

  42. Jeff NJ

Don’t look now but Seattle is only a game behind Anaheim. No question the Yankees are better off if Anaheim is elliminated from the postseason. In fact if Detroit and Anaheim are out replaced by Seattle and Cleveland would be absolutely ideal for both the Yankees and President Gammons team.

  43. Tony NJ

I’m not too worried yet about Seattle or even Boston.

As long as we keep winning things will take care of themselves.

  44. Mr. Gammons

    Hey Yankee fans !!!

Better hurry or you’ll never make it on time. Me and Theo playing guitar.

    http://www.boston.com/ae/conte.....coolmusic/

  45. PBL

Melee, I remember hearing something earlier about clemens helping wang out with his approach or throwing a split finger or something lke that

  46. Bronx

    Three unrelated items:

    1. Do the Gammons bashers think that it is impossible to root for one team and talk objectively about other teams? Or is it possible but you think Gammons doesn’t do it? If you believe that second than the fact that he is a Red Sox fan is not evidence that he his biased. Just sayin’.

    2. I think the current youth movement is great. That said, I have a question for people who write down a 2008 rotation which includes Hughes, Chamberlain and Kennedy (or at least 2 of the 3). Does anyone know what the innings caps for these guys will be next year? Obviously the Yankees do not want to overuse any of these guys. But, it could be pretty rough on the bullpen to have 2 or 3 starters who are not allowed to go deep into games even when they are pitching well. Any thoughts?

    3. Bucky Dent for President of Red Sox Nation – Priceless.

  47. Andrew

Kennedy is going to pitch about 160, 170 innings this year. He will be on track to pitch 200 innings next year, so if the Yankees want, they can put him in the number four spot in the rotation behind Wang, Pettitte, and Hughes. Chamberlain is on track to pitch more like 130 innings this year, so next year his cap will be 160 or 170 like Kennedy’s. This is perfect for a May callup, when teams typically first have a use for a regular fifth starter.

Of course it won’t work out like that, it never does, but it would be nice to dream about the Yankees having a rotation filled with all home-grown pitchers, like the Angels.

  48. Bronx

    Andrew
Thanks. What about Hughes? He obviously didn’t pitch many innings this year?

  49. J-Dawg

Bronx, forgive me because I was stuck in a world without innings caps. You’re right. Being able to wait until May to use Chamberlain in the rotation would be perfect. It sure beats waiting on Carl Pavano!

P.S. I think that Aaron Boone should be Bucky Dent’s running mate!!

  50. Jake

Anyone that reads about baseball knows that Gammons doesn’t wear the Sox love on his sleeve.

There is no one better writing about the game.

  51. Sean

“Seriously, what does this organization have against Chris Britton.”

Pete, why don’t you ask Torre and Cashman?

  52. Munsons Cap

How is the Nagels all home grown?

Escobar was a free agent. Colon was a free agent.

One thing about the Angels here.

If Shields doesn’t figure it out they could lose that division.

There whole game is set up for the 8-9 with Shields and K Rod.

  53. J-Dawg

It’s not a good sign for the Angels that Scot Shields is fighting his mechanics this late in the season. Justin Speier isn’t much of an option for them as an 8th inning guy either. Posada proved that on Monday night. K-Rod may end up having to be his own set-up man, which is not a good spot for them to be in, obviously.

  54. Jim H, Athens, PA

    Hey, Pete-
Hope you had enough sleep, but we’re all jonesin’ here for a blog, buddy. Should be a good weekend series.

  55. saucy

Sure Gammons doesn’t have a boston hat on when he’s on ESPN. I’m sure he’s got his red-sox underoos on though…

  56. saucy

Lackey starting the 8th the other night just shows sciocia has ZERO confidence in his middle relievers right now…

  57. 'Annie Savoy'

    Pete –
Hope your travel wasn’t affected by the nasty Midwest weather yesterday. At least we know you’ve landed safely.

One thing that brings out good vibes from Roger Clemens is young athletes. As the father of four sons, he has a lot of experience with kids the ages of Hughes and Chamberlain etc. even Wang could benefit from some attention from Roger. He used to ‘mentor’ Andy, but Andy has outgrown him and can now be a mentor himself.

I always thought that Mel Stottlemeyer benefited from his role as a Dad while being the pitching coach.

Is Ian Kennedy on the horizon?

  58. EY

With the loss of his best friend Myers, I think Clemens and Pettitte could do a lot of good for Wang by befriending him and taking him out to dinner with them as well.
