White Sox take a pass on competing

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Aug 26, 2007 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

The Red Sox outscored the White Sox 46-7 over four games. The 1919 Black Sox tried harder. That’s a disgrace. J.D. Drew homered today, his first against an American League pitcher since Chase Wright on April 22.

Then I turn on the television to hear Joe Morgan talk for two minutes about what a great job “Sean” Hillenbrand did on some play for the Dodgers against the Mets. Um, that’s Shea Hillenbrand, Joe. He’s been in the majors for a while.

How does ESPN get so many good people for college hoops, college football, the NFL and other sports and use guys like Morgan, Steve Phillips and John Kruk for baseball? Or Jeff Brantley for that matter?

I don’t know what Harold Reynolds was up to. But he’s Vin Scully compared to that crew.

OK, enough ranting.

not ranting – i completely agree.

ESPN may be the classic example of a company that is good at the start and then gets complacent aond overwieght and loses what made it special. People such as Skip Bayless, Joe Morgan, Steve Phillips are a disgrace. {hillips in particular has his own anti A-Rod agenda.

  3. Warden August 26th, 2007 at 9:24 pm

Totally agree, especially regarding Philips. At the trade deadline, he stated that if he were the Yankees’ GM, he would definitely trade Melky for Eric Gagne.

  4. jennifer August 26th, 2007 at 9:27 pm

I ask that same question everyday Pete. Espn has the worst announcers. They get players names wrong, don’t know what is happening with teams. It is very frustrating to listen to.

  5. Scooter August 26th, 2007 at 9:29 pm

Chicago may have laid an egg but at least (at the time of this post) Texas is maintaining a lead over Seattle.

  6. J-Dawg August 26th, 2007 at 9:30 pm

Speaking of ESPN, David Wells just got a base hit. It was a push bunt down the third base line. I know that he doesn’t look it, but in Boomer’s younger days he was a good athlete who could quite easily field his position.

Phillips, Kruk, and Brantley are all pathetic, but at least Brantley left to take a job doing Reds games with George Grande.

  7. jennifer August 26th, 2007 at 9:30 pm

It is only a 2 run lead. Lets not count our chickens.

  8. DMan77 August 26th, 2007 at 9:31 pm

We need more rants like that Pete.

And what a waste of a team the White Sox are this year. Glad we played so well against them too.

Sadly all I’m going to have to listen to hear in Boston for the next 3 days is how unstoppable the Red Sox are now because they won a few games in a row.. Ugh.

  9. Rockin' Rich August 26th, 2007 at 9:31 pm

Never understood why Morgan is held in such high regard, so much so that NBC had to “borrow” him one year from ESPN for a playoff series. WTF?

And Rick Sutcliffe is pretty lame, too.

    Miller and Morgan are putrid…

Miller must have to see a proctologist everytime he gets a sore throat

  12. Dr. Acula August 26th, 2007 at 9:35 pm

Maybe Chicago is trying to lose to improve their chances in the draft lottery.

I know its the work sport but they have the same team president, that has to be a possible explanation.

I wish George Mitchel would investigate this

  13. Bob Michaels August 26th, 2007 at 9:36 pm

WHITE SOX ARE THE BLACK SOX OF 1919. I demand an investigation.

I’ve always liked Morgan and think Kruk is funny and would like to know what exactly the alternative is. Tom Arnold still have a show? McCarver has to do games for people who watch fewer than 10 games a year.

Peter, you are an insider and know as much or more about baseball as those guys because you are there in the trenches. Plus you are a writer and those guys are jocks, but as an fan, I like to hear from players I grew up watching.

How did we do against the pale hose this year? I remember them giving us some real battles – I think they took the season series from us. It’s just not fair.

MLB should really do something about this. Is there someone I can write to look into getting an investigation started?

I’m going to have to hear from people all week at school now. God, I hate this town.

  20. Bob Michaels August 26th, 2007 at 9:45 pm

    A. HORNE is the Eastern league pitcher of the year. He should be called up after the playoffs, Trenton Thunder won their division.

  23. randy l August 26th, 2007 at 9:51 pm

i must be in a looking for trouble mood tonight, but i’m going to take exception to pete’s criticism of joe morgan. morgan may not be that articulate always but he’s, to use that old expression, forgotten more about baseball than peter a. knows. peter a. is good at what he does, but he’s a baseball writer. morgan played the game at a hall of fame level. maybe a lot of the stuff he says goes over the head of a lot of fans who are part of a generation that really hasn’t played very much baseball.

  24. BryanK August 26th, 2007 at 9:52 pm

I miss Harold…he was definitely my favorite on BBTN, followed by Karl Ravech.

I grew up listening to Mel Allen, Red Barber,& Phil Rizzuto…When I relocated to Southern Cal, it was Dick Enberg ( Angels ) and Vinny Scully…So the bar is rather high in my opinions….Joe Morgan is good, John Miller comes off better on radio I think….Granted there’s a wealth of chumps out there, but Morgan isn’t one of them…..All I read here is people ripping individuals, whether it’s players, managers or announcers …But very seldom does anyone thank a stand and approve of individuals for fear of being ripped themselves…..Randy I comes out & takes a stand and leaves himself subjected to petty BS…..Joe Morgan knows the game, a bit old school but comes across good….What’s the problem with him….Is it the popular stance to go with the flow, and just be overly critical…….

  31. Johnny B August 26th, 2007 at 10:15 pm

Joe Morgan makes me miss the Scooter, even more, did Morgan have a good time when he played? You would never know.

  32. Global Warming August 26th, 2007 at 10:17 pm

I actually like Jon Miller. Very theatrical and is usually Pro-Yankee during their telecasts.

I would much rather listen to him than Michael Kay, that’s for sure.

Reasons for ESPN baseball decisions: to influence Cy Young and MVP voting in one way or other. Distant 3rd, HOF voting.

  35. ray August 26th, 2007 at 10:39 pm

If the Yankees had just swept the White Sox everyone would be saying how strong the Yankee offense is and how the pitching is looking good. Look at the White Sox record…they haven’t been bad just against the Red Sox. They have played poorly most of this season. The Red Sox are playing well and I predict that they will take two out of three from the Yankees this next week.

  36. Jake S August 26th, 2007 at 10:39 pm

Joe Morgan is an idiot who chooses to ignore advances in baseball knowledge since the time that he played.

  37. Matty August 26th, 2007 at 10:40 pm

Damn you Deadspin, for making me equate Boston Market with Harold Reynolds.

Maybe we will see Proctor tonight

  40. Matty August 26th, 2007 at 10:45 pm

I’m guessing unless ESPN can find a person with pro-experience that can be in the booth, Morgan will keep his seat for a while.

Reynolds is not exactly as well-spoken as Morgan, even though Morgan’s a complete toolbox.

That’s what happened to Theismann – ESPN realized that Jaworski was a much better fit and had better chemistry with Tirico and Kornheiser.

  41. Steve Phillips August 26th, 2007 at 10:48 pm

Sorry to burst your bubble, guys, but it looks like I was right on the money. Boston has far better pitching than NY and that won them the division.

And Seattle will win the WC for the same reason.

  46. tonyb August 26th, 2007 at 10:52 pm

Joe Morgan can barely complete a thought and gets facts wrong constantly. He spews incoherence with a droning voice and complete lack of any personality.

He is an embarrassment to himself, ESPN, and the game of Baseball.

I am quite sure that Joe Morgan has no soul. It was sold to the devil for the Big Red Machine.

I’m trying not to be a hater, but the man has ruined Sunday Night Baseball for me.

  47. Marc from Portland Maine August 26th, 2007 at 10:53 pm

Thanks Steve, Seattle’s pitching looks just great right now, lol.

  48. PAT M..... August 26th, 2007 at 10:53 pm

Sutcliff is bad…..I think he studied Don Drysdale’s cadance and laid back style….Drysdale was actually was good because he was funny and as the game went along & after he downed a few pops he was damn funny…But he knew the game and from a pitcher spoint of view….He’d tell some inside stories that made even Enberg laugh…..I do miss Harold Reynolds, he came off like a good guy…..Great sense of humor…..Today, most of them are dry, and no humor…..

I have to admit…it is very painful listening to Miller and Morgan, but not as painful as that douche b@g Steven Phillips.

  51. Marc from Portland Maine August 26th, 2007 at 10:59 pm

Btw, is the division over and won???? I don’t think so,,,,,,

  52. J-Dawg August 26th, 2007 at 10:59 pm

Let’s take care of business tomorrow and in the Boston series while the Mariners tangle with the Angels. With a couple of good breaks we could easily be leading the Wild Card at the end of the week!

P.S. Erin Andrews is the only reason to ever watch ESPN!!!

  53. RyanM August 26th, 2007 at 11:00 pm

Harold Reynolds is currently working for MLB.com. He has an online radio show M-F at 2PM. He is an awesome job. Interning for MLB.com this summer, I got to see him around the office, and he really is as nice as he sounds on TV.

  54. RyanM August 26th, 2007 at 11:01 pm

I meant to say he is an awesome guy. add editing abilities already!!! :p

  59. Kill Schill-(ing) August 26th, 2007 at 11:06 pm

    now, it’s 5-3 Rangers with a runner at 2nd.

  60. Matty August 26th, 2007 at 11:06 pm

it’s obvious what needs to happen.

Moose needs to get his hand possessed, chop it off, then attach a chainsaw to it, fight demons, then go back in time, make a new hand in the blacksmith’s shop, come back, get the girl, pitch, and all is right in the world.

    …Groovy.

  67. Bobcat August 26th, 2007 at 11:11 pm

At this point in the season, it’s about getting into the Tournament. Wild Card, Division, matters not to me. Once you’re in the Tournament, anything can happen. If I were the other AL teams, I would not want to draw the Yankees in the ALDS.

Just win the one you’re in and get to the Tournament.

  68. rob August 26th, 2007 at 11:11 pm

I would rather have some ex-Yanks on the National scene as broadcasters. It would be nice to have a Yankee perspective for a change but since ESPN is in New England, they are all Red Sox homers. I can’t stand that network.

  69. stuart August 26th, 2007 at 11:12 pm

no for th Kasey and SJ’s of the world the 27 Mariners could not lose they are such a powerhouse. they lost to Vincente Koufax padilla… Texas payed with out Michael Young. The mariners power house lineup the best sinc the cleveland teams of the mid 90′s were some how held to only 3 runs..

    but richie 215 sexson had a hit….

sorry Kasey and other doomsayers your team lost tonight… the mariners will not catch the angels, no way. the angels play them 7 games.. the mariners have a tough schedule the rest of the season and it will take a toll on this perfectly constructed powerhouse put together by Buzzie Bavasi’s son Bill a near genius also…

the bum hughes has given up 32 hits in 38 innings with 5 HR’s.. he has given up 15 walks so his WHIP is still way under 1.50. he has struck out 36 batters in 38.2 innings. yea, trade him he is done, he never will turn out to be any good, he is all hype…

the guy is almost 21.25 yrs old and this is all he can show, he is a total draft bomb traDE HIM FOR A COUPLE OF PLAYERS TO BE NAMED LATER OR just eat his salary and waive him if there are no takers..

maybe he can get pitching lessons from some of the experts on this site to help with his mechanics and maybe squeeze a couple of additional MPH’s out of his fastball.

We have a large enough sample size, SJ44 wants to remove him from the rotation for Kei or Mr. Kennedy…Just typing that makes me laugh…..

ALL hope is lost.. Mikey I apologize for the bad grammer and any typos….

  77. Kozmo August 26th, 2007 at 11:45 pm

Morgan has always been an incredible, egotistical dolt. For example, when asked by Costas during the 1998 World Series about who the better team was between the 1998 Yanks and the 1976 Reds, of course Morgan said the Reds. But his rationale was most annoying, saying that the Reds “were more explosive.” What a joke. The Yankees scored about 130 more runs that year, had ten players hit in double-digit homers, had a 9-hole hitter in Brosius have a career year (and the best year for a 9-hole hitter by a mile) with 19 homers, 98 RBIs, and a .300 average, came from behind a ton, and played with five different regular left fielders (Strawberry, Davis, Ledee, Curtis, and Spencer), all of whom were productive.

Morgan, Phillips, Kruk, Bayless, and the Two Live Stews are all clowns, with Morgan the jester-in-chief.

  78. PAT M..... August 26th, 2007 at 11:47 pm

Hughes is a fixture in the Yankee rotation for many years to come……Ian Kennedy needs to be the next starter to come up….Hughes, Chamberlain, & Kennedy….The Yankees Holy Trinity of starters….I still think Kennedy should have pitched in the Clemems suspension game…Not Karstens…….Mussina is not and has not been the answer…..Frankly he has never recovered from his groin injury ( July 06 ) in Minnesota……You only need 3 starters in round 1, then 4 starters after that……

    Pete,

You’re right of course – Morgan is a terrible baseball announcer who is the epitome of cliched, unresearched, useless analysis. Just know that what you’re saying about him is what most of the general public says about all journalists, yourself included. As a budding college journalist, I hope to one day be the object of the public’s scorn!

You do realize other writers make fun you, right?
You are a joke as are your Yankees. At least you finally admit that they have no chance at the division and the true AL East team will take the division. At least you have some brains. Well brains after it becomes obvious to everyone else.

    Stuart, got to be compassionate.

12345 just demonstrates the perils of incest.

Red Sox nation has a high incidence of mental retardation because they all breed with each other. I mean, how much more illiterate can you get than 1234′s post?

He can’t help it, though, it’s in the genes.

  87. J-Dawg August 27th, 2007 at 1:01 am

The reason the guy didn’t go higher than 9 on his name is because he can’t count any higher. Talk about classless. That’s what happens when one cousin says to the other, “let’s have a child.”

  88. xryanx August 27th, 2007 at 1:08 am

ESPN’s analysis consists of the following:

    - “He’s a veteran guy who knows how to win.”
    - “He’s been there before.”
    - “I gotta go with the experience here…”
    - “He just does so many things that don’t show up in the boxscore”
    - “This guy brings tons of energy to a team and gets hits in the clutch.”

ESPN is poor because most baseball players don’t really know anything about the game itself. They know how to play and how to perform certain skills, but they don’t know anything about lineup construction. You think these guys are going to be open to statistical analysis? They hate stats because stats are what put them out of baseball. They also know a good portion of the players they are covering. Barry Bonds said it best during his press conference after breaking Hank Aarons record: baseball players are like a fraternity.

The game has just passed Steve Phillips by. A lot of people rag on Phillips for moves he didn’t even make (Kazmir for Zambrano). It is pretty scary that guys like Phillips have and still do run professional baseball teams.

  89. Kozmo August 27th, 2007 at 1:14 am

12345: Really nice commentary–for a sociopath. Seriously, take your profane, childish screed back to “Red Sox Nation.” You should be ashamed of yourself. Then again, if you had any sense of shame, you wouldn’t have posted your garbage in the first place. Looking forward to having your comment purged, troll.

I’d like to hear Miller with someone else. Morgan makes some good points but wears on you. Phillips–how does this fool still have a job? He is the worst. I liked Harold Reynolds and Karl Ravech. As Pete pointed out, how come ESPN can’t do better?

The ideal scenario. Michael Kay to ESPN where he’ll fit right in with the likes of Phillips, Gammons, and Kruk.
    Four airheads.

Kay doesn’t bother me at all. After listening to every local broadcast team in the country with Extra Innings, we have a pretty solid team compared to all these markets.

agreed with Global Warming on Miller.

Morgan and Joe Buck may be the worst. (i really hate joe buck)

And Kay is more tolerable this year I think.

“My favorite website. this guy hates joe morgan!”
” fire joe morgan”, the web site, has 5-6 memebers and not one is african american. they all came from ivy league schools and all are red sox fans. they, over their several years in existence, have posted maybe 1-2 minor blurbs about jackie robinson, but they bash an african -american hall of famer.
be careful who you get in bed with.

  99. xryanx August 27th, 2007 at 2:57 pm

Yeah those guys are racist because they don’t mention Jackie Robinson in a blog that has NOTHING TO DO WITH HIM. Jack ass.

  100. Pablo August 27th, 2007 at 4:22 pm

The ESPN people are just really bad, and their ESPNews and SportCenter anchors are corny.

    Just horrible.

  101. casey August 27th, 2007 at 9:30 pm

“be careful who you get in bed with.”

ha ha ha. thanks for the laugh. I needed it. Just because Joe Morgan is an african-american HOFer doesnt mean he is untouchable from criticism and, Joe Morgan being a complete retard has nothing to do with him being african-american. If you are saying that you cant criticize someone because they are african american, well that is racist. And stupid.

“Yeah Mike Vick made some mistakes but its cool, he’s black”
“idi amin killed a lot of innocent people but you know, he gets a pass, he’s black”.

    yeah. bad argument dude.

I could care less if those dudes went to harvard or boston adult school. and I could care less if they are sox fans. big deal. that site has made me smile on many occasion.
