Two down with 31 games to play

Peter Abraham
August

Just returned from a nice night out in Detroit (seriously) to see that Seattle lost to Texas. So the Yankees are two games out of the wild card with 32 left to play.

Seattle has to return to the Pacific Time Zone tomorrow night to start a series against the Angels, who will have John Lackey on the mound. That’s tough duty.

Seattle has 34 games left, 21 against teams .500 or better. The Yankees have 32 games, 19 against teams .500 or better.

I figure the Yankees for at least 92 or 93 wins, the Mariners for 90 or 91 tops. Seattle has a road trip that takes them to Cleveland (1 game), Toronto (3), New York (3) and Detroit (3) over 11 days. They could very easily go 3-7 on that trip.

The Yankees need to get better starting pitching if they are going to get this done. But I believe their offense will mash its way to a lot of victories in the next month.

…from your keyboard to god’s ear.

  2. Ha!

Pete, the last time you babbled on about a schedule advantage was when Johnny Damon took your hand and told you everything was going to be alright because the Yankees has a better schedule than the Red Sox.

If you wish hard enough maybe that house will land on the wicked witch after all.

  3. A.B.K

How in the world are the Mariners winning all these games??? besides J.J. Putz and Ichiro who else is a superstar there?? and only Miguel Batesta has more than 10 wins among their starters. They do have a few RBI guys like Sexson, Beltra and Ibanez but still I can smell a collapse. by the way I’m still disappointed that the Division slipped away after our great comeback from 14.5 games behind cutting it to 3, but hey who cares Division or Wild Card as long as we make the playoffs. (still have a feeling if we sweep the Red Sox this weekend we might still have a chance).

There’s still a month of ball to play. It’s neither a time to panic, nor plan for for postseason plans.

But if they make it, it’ll be very satisfying for everyone, from top to bottom. From the top of the food chain to the bottom: Steinbrenner–>$$Man–>Torre–>Team–>Fans–>Networks–>Joe Morgan who will benefit from all the ratings that the networks wouldn’t have if the Yankees miss the playoffs–>and yes, even Boston who would be irrelevant without the Yankees.

  5. Mehdi

Red Sox fans are only showing how afraid they really are of the Yankees when they come on here and spew nonsense like “Ha” above. They do not want to see the Yankees in the playoffs. Let’s be honest, as great as their feat was in 2004 it was a bit of fluke. That’s why it hadn’t ever been done. The Red Sox fan wants no part of the Yankees in the post season, home field advantage or not.

This is what happens when people freak out after a bad loss. We lose perspective and declare the season over. But if you have already conceded the division, then the Yankees didnt lose any ground today in their playoff chase. The only thing that bothers me is that it is now a 3 team race, and they could have put Detroit away. I think if they split the next 4, they will be in good shape going into September.

  9. Tak

Angels and Mariners face each other 7 more times. The Yanks can get 93 wins easily if they manage to play .530-.550 baseball rest of the way. I am hoping that Mariners win the Division with less than 92 or 93 wins by getting rid of the Angels for good; Yanks are to win the Wildcard race, and will NOT have to face the Angels in the postseason. Still, for the Yanks to advance to the Postseason, they have got to figure out ways to win the Orioles before the season is over (6 more games left to play).

from your lips to God’s ears Pete and

the thing with the M’s is they have been the healthiest team in baseball this year. The Twins stay in it every year with Johan and Nathan and whatever else they can figure out, this year the M’s got Felix Hernandez and Putz not as good as the Twins but a lot less to figure out becuase they have a decent offense

  11. dougj

Strange how Yankee fans are obsessed with Mariners when Detroit has better chance of winning WC.

  12. Mo

Thats why Moose needs to show up tonight. They can put Detroit 3 games behind them. Aloss and theres only a one game gap, making a 3 team race.

  13. Yankee07

Strange how Yankee fans are obsessed with Mariners when Detroit has better chance of winning WC.

Umm it may have something to do with Seattle having a better record (and currently leadig the wild card) and Detroit have a worse record than us and behind us in the wild card chase. I’m sure if the tables were turned we would be more worried about Detroit.

  14. Elliott Larkfield

Actually the Yankees are four out. Pay attention to the loss column, dimwit.

  15. Brian

Can you add…58-55=3, therefore they are only three in the loss column.

  16. jennifer

Elliot math wasn’t your strong suit in school was it? 58 (# of Yankee losses) -55 (# of Seattle losses) is 3 games. And as of today Seattle has played 2 less games than the Yankees.

  17. MattNC

32 games left, not 31. Yanks are 72-58 right now. That’s 130 games played so far.

  18. MattNC

And Yankees are 3 out in the loss column, not 4. And I won’t even call you a dimwit.

The Mariners have 2 games in hand over the Yanks, but as they have more games left on the road (where they are a .500 team), that’s actually a good thing.

  19. tterba

yanks are 9 and 7 during the “good team” stretch… all they have to do is win today and take two out of three from sox and thats a good run during this tough stretch

there’s some positives that you can stick in your back pocket . one is that after the beantown bums come to town the schedule gets a little lighter . second thing is the mariners schedule gets a little heavier .

  21. Tony NJ

Sea will fade. It is coming.

  22. Anthony

Mussina needs to set it up today!

  23. dan

“one is that after the beantown bums come to town”

And they say the internet lacks wit.

  24. Joe

I feel a Mariner collapse (market correction).

It would be great if we got tonight’s game against the Tigers! Moose is due for one of his good games.

  25. Yanksmitch

I’m also in agreement that the Yanks will catch Seattle, but not looking forward to the post season as much as I would like. It seems like the Yanks have the same combination as in years past– a lot of offense without enough starting pitching. If that offense goes dry for a couple games in the post season (I’m looking at you Arod) or we run into some good pitching (Boston, LA)– what then? I can’t see our rotation dominating anyone… beyond Pettitte and Wang, everyone has been very mediocre on the mound, and even Wang’s had a rough patch this year. Of course anything can happen in the playoffs, but I really look forward to the days when the Yanks are known for their pitching as well (Chamberlin, Kennedy, and Hughes in a few years?!). We may have to wait a few more years before we end this ring drought.

  26. Nick

Clemens and Hughes and whoever replaces Mussina will need to do their best pitching for the next 5 weeks in order to feel secure. There has to be at least 3-4 hot bats in the lineup at all times. If they cool off a little, have 3-4 bats ready to get hot.

Surely thge wit here is better than anything you will find from those knuckle dragging apes over at SoSH.

i dont know why you are rooting for the mariners to lose. im a die hard yankee fan and i hope the mariners win….

Like this we avoid facing the angels (who own us) in the first round…

    go yanks, mariners, and indians/tigers!!!

  29. Kyle

because with the division gap becoming 7.5 this weekend we need to at least focus on a fallback plan if we dont pull a miracle and win the division.. thats why seattle has to lose. the angels are tough, but i’d rather be watching the yankees play the angels at the stadium, then watch the mariners play the angels from my couch.

  30. barnsy

Moose will show up tonight. He has too much pride not to.

  31. Bob Michaels

As the Former Yankee Second Baseman would say, WE PLAY TODAY, WE WIN TODAY.

    A few observations:

    (1) Red Sox trolls, go crawl back under the scum from which you came. This is a Yankee blog. If you want your jollies, go back to SOSH.

    (2) After the first inning of yesterday’s game, Hughes pitched the best he has since his return. Expect big stuff from him in September. Same thing from Wang and Pettite. Clemens will find a way as well. They have 4 excellent starters going into September.

    (3) Expect nothing from Mussina. He will fight it out, and maybe give them 6 innings of 3-4 runs today, but it could be ugly. Hopefully ARod will bail him out–what a turn of events from last August.

    (4) Detroit, LAA, Cleveland, and Seattle all play each other, a lot, during the next 4 weeks. Someone has to lose, right? I cannot see more than 2 of these teams in the playoffs.

    (5) 6-3 in the nine games against Boston and Seattle, and they MUST BEAT BALTIMORE. Do this, and they are in.

    (6) Then take it to the Red Sox trolls. Team ERA against the Yankees is something like 6-7 this year, isn’t it?

  33. SJ61*

    Pete,

By my count, the Yankees only have 17 of the 32 remaining games against teams .500 or better…….15 of the 32 games are against Baltimore (6), Tampa Bay (6), and Kansas City (3)……16 home games, 16 on the road. Seattle has 21 games against teams .500 or better, and also an even split home and away, 17 and 17. The Tigers have 15 games against teams .500 or better, with 17 games at home and 15 on the road. The Angels have the easiest schedule…..only 11 games against teams .500 or better (7 vs. Seattle), with 17 @ home and 15 on the road.

The Yankess’ 3 tough losses this past week to the Angels and Togers really hurt…so the Yankees need to somehow beat Verlander and get the series split tonight, take care of Seattle when they play, figure out how to beat the Orioles, and in general get better pitching and WIN THE CLOSE GAMES, ESPECIALLY ON THE ROAD.
