This will be quick because I need to finish my story, catch a ride to the airport and then sleep for a bit before getting back to New York for the Red Sox series.

Joe Torre said only that Mike Mussina’s place in the rotation would be talked about today. As I left the clubhouse, Torre was in his office talking with Ron Guidry.

It seems unlikely Mussina will start against Tampa Bay on Saturday. He is 0-1 with a 7.59 in two starts against the Rays this season, allowing 18 hits and nine runs in 10.2 innings.

My guess is Mussina is either placed on the DL or just put on the shelf. Somebody will start in his place. That somebody could be Steven White, Jeff Karstens, Kei Igawa or Matt DeSalvo. I don’t believe they’re ready to run Ian Kennedy out there.

Mussina said he wanted to pitch. But no athlete would ever say otherwise in public. He admitted he’s a mess, however.

“I don’t feel I can do anything right,” he said.

Torre said here would a move in the bullpen tomorrow. You have to think Sean Henn is out. No idea who will be back but I pray it’s Chris Britton so people will stop e-mailing me.

Thanks for reading. Catch you tomorrow from the Bronx.
