A few minor matters . . .
Eric Wordekemper was named Most Valuable Pitcher in the Florida State League.
A 24-year-old righty reliever, he was 2-0 with an 0.60 ERA over 41 appearances and has a league-leading 31 saves. He did not start the season as a particularly hot name in the system, but the 46th round choice in the 2005 draft out of Creighton has a shot now.
Three other Tampa players made the FSL all-star team: RHP Daniel McCutcheon, C Francisco Cervelli and OF Jose Tabata.
Tabata is hitting .307 but has only 23 extra-base hits in 411 at-bats. Based on what we saw in spring training, I figured he’d be a monster this season. But he’s only 19, so it’s hard to figure out what he is yet. If he wasn’t the youngest regular in that league, he was among the youngest.
Single A Charleston INF Mitch Hilligoss was named to the South Atlantic League All-Star team. He is hitting .313 with four homers and 50 RBI.
Scranton and Trenton are in first place and are headed to the playoffs, which slightly complicates calling up players on Sunday. The first priority is to bolster the major league club. But you also don’t want to strip down teams headed for the playoffs.

I suspect we’ll have a much better idea about Tabata next year, post-operation.
Congrats to both teams!! Who says we don’t have players in the minors?
The Yankees just called up Chris Britton according to Sweeny Murti.
i don’t care if scranton and trenton are in the playoffs. if there’s anyone who could possibly help the yankees in even the slightest capacity (pinch runner, 3rd catcher, defensive replacement) he needs to be called up immediately.
Pete – I’m wondering if the reason behind the wrist surgery Tabata needed (or needs, I’m assuming he’s gotten it by now) is the cause of his relative lack of power. Maybe next year he starts his “monster” years….
Pete,
Tabata’s power struggle was directly related to his wrist injury. He played all year with it. Actually, the fact he did as well as he did is actually good news. I have a feeling the monster year you were expecting will show up in 2008.
he will have his hamate bone removed this offseason.
many players have had this surgery and it could explain the lack of power.
either way he still had a very good season for a player his age in the FSL.
Tabata also had a hamstring injury that hampered him earlier in the season.
He was the youngest player in the FSL this year. I will be interested to watch Tabata and Austin Jackson in Trenton next year. That’s when we will have a better idea on both players.
I think they are both solid prospects who will play well in AA next season.
Hilligoss also has 33 SB in 39 attempts.
Wordekemper has been dominant at each level so far, with low walks and good groundball rates.
Although he is about to turn 25 McCutchen had a great year for his first full season.
Wordekemper does not have ane electric stuff.
also, Alan Horne was named Eastern League’s “Pitcher of the Year” a few days ago beating out Clay Buchholz and Radhames Liz for the honor
hey pete,
torre said that he wants to bring up an infielder with speed is it possible that the yanks would bring up Mitch Hilligoss hes got 33sb 6cs 155 hits and is batting about .315
I saw Eric’s girlfriend at a game when they played in Ft. Meyers. Oh my God she’s the hottest girl I’ve ever seen!!!!
She looks like a mix of jessica alba and and jessica simpson!!! Tan skin, big boobs, big lips, brown eyes, beautiful body and ass!
I’d love to go home to that every night
