Joba, Big Papi. Big Papi, Joba.

Joba Chamberlain on facing David Ortiz: “He looks a lot bigger in the box than he does on TV.”

The kid shook off Jorge Posada to throw that 3-2 slider to J.D. Drew. That’s the second time he’s done it and it tells you a lot about his personality and confidence.

In eight appearances: 10 4 0 0 3 17.

Chamberlain also was very pleased to get the news about Ian Kennedy. He said the two have become best friends in the last 15 months since they were the organization’s first two picks of the 2006 draft.

“I can’t wait to give him a hug,” he said.

wow wow and wow…. kennedy is coming to the bronx and i will be there to see it!!!

  7. randyhater August 28th, 2007 at 11:52 pm

Sweet, sweet win on all fronts. That’s 4 of 5, and 5 of 7, now against the Choke Sox. I don’t care what their record says, this year’s team scares me alot less than the ’03-’04 version, especially if Manny’s back is bothering him. I think they’ll be easy pickings come playoff time. Let’s just hope they can hold off Seattle for the wildcard.

  8. Ben August 28th, 2007 at 11:54 pm

    The Yankees future looks good!

  9. Skippy August 28th, 2007 at 11:54 pm

I like the idea of having all these young guys who spent time together in the minors up in the bigs playing together. You hope for enthusiasm, camaraderie, all that Minnesota Twins kind of stuff.

Though I’m absolutely crushed about what’s happened to Mussina. Sigh.

  10. In Joba We Trust August 28th, 2007 at 11:54 pm

    why was manny pulled tonight?

  11. mel August 28th, 2007 at 11:56 pm

Back spasms and the guy who replaced him (Kielty) went out with a sore back. What hotel are they staying at? Keep up the good service!

the yankees with 2 22-21 year olds in the rotation going down the stretch, holy squirrels! Lets hope for the best

  13. In Joba We Trust August 28th, 2007 at 11:59 pm

hm backs can be tricky..i wonder if this will keep him benched tomorrow night. anyone have any suggestions to getting some signatures on a ball? normally i sit amongst the bleacher creatures but got a pair of tickets behind home plate and figure during bp maybe i could get a ball signed.

pete, any word on the squirrel?

  15. Global Warming August 29th, 2007 at 12:09 am

Even if Kennedy pitches well I doubt heres here for more than a start or two. He’s at 147 Innings Pitched on the year, in 2006 he 101.2 so they won’t push it. This is a guy they want as a possible starter coming out of Spring Training in 08, it makes no sense to push it.

My guess? Kennedy gets the spot start against Tampa and regardless of how well he pitches Moose returns to the rotation to face the Royals. Mussina has great numbers against the Royals so I think you give him a chance.

  16. frits August 29th, 2007 at 12:10 am

in joba we trust – get there as soon as the gates open (5:30, i believe, not sure), go on the 1st or 3rd base side while the players are on the field, and sometimes they’ll walk down the line and sign balls etc. we did that and got damon, rivera, etc.

  17. Brian August 29th, 2007 at 12:10 am

It might sound crazy, but I think we can thank the “Big Ragu” for this youth movement.

  18. EY August 29th, 2007 at 12:11 am

I love how these kids are supporting each other – Joba, Hughes, and Kennedy (well they’re my age so I shouldn’t call them ‘kids’).

I hope someone on the team will show Wang some friendship and fill in the gap.

  19. frits August 29th, 2007 at 12:11 am

Global Warming – those #s indicate that they’re really pushing it giving him more than one start. 50 inning increase over 1 year is generous. this may be day 1 in ian kennedy’s story, but i think there will be an intermission soon.

  20. frits August 29th, 2007 at 12:13 am

are ppl. really giving wang the cold shoulder?

  21. mel August 29th, 2007 at 12:16 am

is that what you’re asking about?

  25. Dr. Acula August 29th, 2007 at 12:17 am

Big hand for Johnny Damon, Melky, Jetes, Andy, Cano, Jabba, Torre, and Mo!!

  26. John_Halfz August 29th, 2007 at 12:17 am

There’s a reason that base was open with Vlad up. I guess Sean Green didn’t understand.

  27. CaptainsCorner August 29th, 2007 at 12:18 am

It is a good thing that Joba and Hughes have enough confidence to shake Posada off. If they are confident in a pitch then throw it. Jobas breaking pitches are so good there was no reason to challenge Drew with a 3-2 fastball(if that is what Posada was calling). Posada calls alot of fast balls and sometimes too many and some questionable calls so let the pitcher throw what he wants.
I am excited to see Kennedy pitch. It might be a good match up for him against the Rays since he throws off speed and most of the Rays are only fastball hitters. All they look for is the fastball. Moose wasnt getting it done and they mind as well get the kids ready for next season. I have a feeling Kennedy might only get 1 start and then they might give Moose another chance..unless Kennedy is really good.

  28. mel August 29th, 2007 at 12:18 am

    migames,

I’m still lol’ing at the squirrel & manny. Although I think he’d prefer a smoother nut like Julian Tavarez.

Vlad with an RBI double. Halos take the lead.

  29. John_Halfz August 29th, 2007 at 12:18 am

And now they intentionally walk Garrett Anderson. Hilarious!

  30. Dr. Acula August 29th, 2007 at 12:19 am

    *A Pennant Race Flash*

Halos 6-5 over the Ms in the top of the 7th

  31. John_Halfz August 29th, 2007 at 12:20 am

Wouldn’t you rather have Anderson beat you than Guerrero? I mean, this isn’t 1997. How in the hell does Seattle pitch to Vlad but not Garrett?

  32. Global Warming August 29th, 2007 at 12:22 am

One last thing, what does this mean for Kennedys options? I believe he wasn’t on the 40 man roster, so basically your starting his clock early for a spot start?

Or am I forgetting a certain September Rule/ Certain amount of innings needed to qualify.

    Argh I forgot!

  33. John_Halfz August 29th, 2007 at 12:22 am

If Seattle is going to give away a game at home that Elvin Santana tried to give them, it’s all in our court. Biggest games remaining (besides the 5 with Boston)? Need to take care of Baltimore.

  34. John_Halfz August 29th, 2007 at 12:23 am

I know everyone’s been down on Johnny Damon, but he’s turned it on. And he’s hilarious:

    post-game:

“You’re hitting .350 since July 20. Why the sudden turnaround?”

“A lot of luck, you know? There’s been a lot of cheap hits falling in.”

  35. mel August 29th, 2007 at 12:24 am

    frits,

I thought you were referring to something that had been reported.

I think there’s enough love to go around that clubhouse. I read that the guys love to kid around with Wang.

But I can see what you mean about Wang being on his own island, but that’s his personality. And he always has Gator, that’s a beautiful relationship that I’m sure that both of them will treasure forever. o.k. Where’s my tissue?

Besides, I think that Wang missed his sinking fastball more than he misses Meyers.

  36. kd August 29th, 2007 at 12:25 am

    is manny playing tomorow?

  37. Dr. Acula August 29th, 2007 at 12:26 am

    Check out this pic.

I didn’t notice it at first

Standing behind the Red Sox dugout, next to the grrl in pink, is Henry Kissinger giving Dice-K a standing ovation. Of all the double-dealing, low-down scheming acts he has committed, this is probably the worse!!

    *Boooooooooooo!*

  38. Dr. Acula August 29th, 2007 at 12:26 am

    kd-

Good question. With their lead, they may hold him out.

  39. gianthinker August 29th, 2007 at 12:28 am

Good move because Moose needs some time to try to get his control back and we might be able to catch lighting in a bottle again with another young arm. If Kennedy does really well we’d definately have our answer for a long man in Mussina although he’d be a super expensive pen arm.

  40. John_Halfz August 29th, 2007 at 12:29 am

    KD:

If we can sign Enrique Wilson to a contract tonight, Manny will be out for another 10 days.

  41. randyhater August 29th, 2007 at 12:29 am

    Global,

If Kennedy represents against Tampa he’s getting the ball against KC, innings cap be damned. Does anyone really believe that 15 more innings either way makes a difference with these guys? They’re professional athletes, not Faberge eggs.

  42. kd August 29th, 2007 at 12:31 am

bring back enrique!!! he was the perfect ‘weapon’ off the bench

  43. John_Halfz August 29th, 2007 at 12:31 am

    Huge AB for Ichiro.

  44. John_Halfz August 29th, 2007 at 12:33 am

or, perfect weapon at the Ritz Carlton. Seriously, he was like a story out of Halberstam’s “Summer of ’47.” Hit about a buck ninety. Was 8/10 against Pedro. And got Manny drunk before a huge series in the Bronx.

  45. John_Halfz August 29th, 2007 at 12:33 am

well, it’s a ballgame again in Seattle.

  46. John_Halfz August 29th, 2007 at 12:35 am

Gotta keep it at sixes. With Seattle having lost 3 in a row, you have to believe you’d see Putz if Seattle got ahead here and any sign of trouble in the 8th.

  47. mel August 29th, 2007 at 12:35 am

    Dr. Acula,

My local radio station has a feature called “Radio Across America” and today’s guest was Kevin Winter from the Boston espn affiliate.

He was a nice enough guy. Called Fenway the largest bar in the world. And he said there’s a certain population of the fans that go to the game so they can say they went to the game. He says they’re called “pink hats” and they jumped on the bandwagon in late ’03. You could tell he didn’t hold them in high regard.

I don’t know which is lower, pinkhats, Kissinger, Ben Affleck, or Mark Wahlberg.

btw, who was Tiger Woods cheering for at the stadium today?

  48. John_Halfz August 29th, 2007 at 12:36 am

Ichiro taketh away and he giveth. (caught stealing, Mathis to Cabrera).

  49. Viper August 29th, 2007 at 12:37 am

    I agree with GW.

This is probably a spot start for Kennedy. He may get a couple of starts in Sept, but it won’t be permanent.

They are really watching his innings cap and he’s already pretty much maxed out.

They are going to protect this kid’s arm – no matter what.

  50. J-Dawg August 29th, 2007 at 12:38 am

I’m impressed. It’s awfully tough to throw out Ichiro.

  51. John_Halfz August 29th, 2007 at 12:39 am

Let’s see if Roids Matthews, Jr., can get it done.

  52. mel August 29th, 2007 at 12:49 am

Nice to see another team get screwed on a caught stealing call and have it cost them a run. Halos retake the lead. C’mon guys! Don’t you want to see the Yankees in the playoffs?

  53. mel August 29th, 2007 at 12:49 am
