Kennedy to start on Saturday

Peter Abraham
August
28

In case you missed it, Joe Torre announced just a little while ago that Ian Kennedy would start Saturday against Tampa Bay.

Mike Mussina will remain on the roster and work on the side. He will not be used out of the bullpen.

Kennedy, 22, is 12-3 with a 1.91 ERA in 26 games in the minors this season. He last pitched on Saturday. No word yet on a 40-man roster move. They won’t make that until Saturday. There’s plenty of options.

The Yankees will have a 21-year-old and a 22-year-old in their rotation and a 21-year-old in their bullpen. Who ever thought that would happen?

    thank god!

  2. Dimitri

A young Mussina. I like it.

  3. the todd

holy cow didn’t expect that good for him tho … here comes the three headed monster … so do they just call him up on saturday so they dont need to put him on the 40 man roster ? or do they have to call him up on the 31st ?

  4. Joe

Damn! I gave my tickets (to this Saturday’s game) to a friend of mine.

  5. Jonathan Everett

I can’t wait to see what happens, good luck Ian and poor Moose.

  6. RJPinstripes

Sat. is Sept 1st so with the expanded rosters no one has to get sent out. Ian could get 3-4 starts before the end of the season.

  7. Motown Yankee Fan

Oh, Todd, good point. I think they have to move him to the 40 man before september 1 if he’s going to be used in the post-season. And presumably they are starting his option clock because they believe he can help them get there. This whole age thing is shocking. But I love it.

  8. eelz

    sweet!

  9. EY

The future is….NOW, well, The Future is THIS SATURDAY
Rotation for next year: Wang, Pettitte, Hughes, Joba, Kennedy

  10. joe

it is gonna be more than just kennedy onto the 40 man. minky too. they can put brackman on the 60 day for one space dont know what the other move is. dfa brower?

  11. YankeeJosh

I don’t get holding off on the 40 man roster move. Brackman is getting surgery and is useless this year. If Kennedy is on before Septembver 1 he is at eligible for the opost-season. Sure, he could bomb out, or he could be lights out and you’d want him in the playoffs. Worth at least leaving the option for him in the posst-season open I think.

  12. Mike S.

Our FanClub has 3 buses heading up on Saturday! With me included!

  13. crawdaddy

    Peter,
I thought it! I’m sure Cashman wanted to do it under different and not as desparate circumstances, but it was Cashman’s plan to rebuild his pitching internally with pitchers groomed to be New York Yankees instead of having nothing, but hired guns in your rotation.

  14. Mike S.

Hope they put him on the roster on the 31st. That’s a necessity if they want him available for a possible postseason.

  15. Jim Johnson

I don’t know if it’s a good move, but I have to admit, I am super-greedy and wanting to see this kid. I’m glad he’s coming.

  16. Joba the Great

    Ian Kennedy! . . . Kennedy!

  17. Carmine

I definitely like the future is this Saturday a lot more than the future is now. The latter sounds like a Met catchphrase when they wanted to ignore the fact that they were losing 90 games a year a few seasons ago.

  18. jonathan

thank goodness IPK (ian patrick kennedy) will be starting on saturday instead of mike (mr almost mussina)
    ill be there watching.
    go ian!!!!

  19. mel

    So what’s new?

Britton’s up, Kennedy’s up, Moose to the side, Jeff Weaver outpitched Santana, Yankees won, just another day. Ho hum.

    What happened to Manny?

And what happened with Kasey in the game thread?

  20. mel

Back to back. Now it’s 5-3.

  21. #9

Good news for Joba – he won’t have to carry everyone’s bags now!

  22. Carmine

I actually think the Devil Rays is a good a lineup as any for Kennedy to get his feet wet with. They’re certainly no pushovers offensively, but they’re predominantly young and free-swinging which could benefit his finesse style. He doesn’t have a dominating fastball. Very much like Mussina(or what he used to be/is ideally).

  23. Bobcat

Bobby Murcer hit the nail on the thread….”this is exciting for Yankee fans, and could be for a long, long time.”

He also indicated that he’s been told that Kennedy is “the best of the lot that has been brought up.”

    A fun time of year.

  24. Bobcat

    on the head…. sheesh…

  25. jonathan

moose is gone…the future is now..

  26. #9

I guess Mussina now knows the answer to “Who will they replace me with?”

  27. Jonathon

After the Yankees took the lead on Jeter’s HR, Kasey happened to say something to the effect, ‘that’s fine until Pettitte gives up a game tying HR in the 7th’ and then as fate would have it, Pettitte did.

The scorn heaped on him after Varitek HRed was unreal…and unfair. I really felt bad.

  28. frits

this is a bit scary given this dude’s inning cap for this season. i’m very excited, but i hope we dont’ see another kerry wood. i’d love some insight from pete or others in re: how close he is to the cap and how many innings we can expect from him if he’s good.

  29. tonyb

Wow, I really am surprised Kennedy gets the call, though I think it is the right move. Advantage Cashman.

I really feel bad for Moose – he has had a heck of a career and been a mainstay of this staff for many years. I hope he can find a way to bounce back and be effective, but it doesn’t look good.

The Moose is dead! Long live the Mini-Moose!

  30. Go NYR

Is this the first MY9 game that did not have a raindelay? Its nice when you dont have to deal with their alternate programming

  31. Negativity Rules

    Kennedy up? oh great.

Spawning another branch of the 2007 Lineage of Disappointment: Wright, Clippard, DeSalvo, Hughes, now this.

  32. Patrick Bateman

Does anyone know who will be DFA’d to make room for Kennedy? I’m hoping Kevin Thompson. No need for him since Brett Gardner does the same thing Thompson does (speed on the bases) and is younger.

  33. the todd

man i wish i lived on the east coast. this season is by far the most exciting season i can remember in a loooooooong time. even though it has been the most frustrating as well, definitely great watching all these young guys come up (i was too young to appreciate it in the mid 90’s) i can’t remember being so pumped to watch someone pitch as i do with joba.

tonight i was standing up in my room watching on my computer and gave a fist pump of my own on that last strike out.

    i heart joba

  34. mel

Thanks, Jonathon. I guess Kasey can add Psychic to his resume. I hope he sees 2 more wins in the very near future.

No harm no foul on Varitek’s homerun. Nice inning by Mo tonight. Good for him, could tell he was having a problem with his confidence ;)

  35. JT

    bout freaking time

    mushina is done!

  36. Brian

In Cash we Trust. No one could ever of thought that the Yankees would ever have this much youth on the team…never mind the pitching staff.

By the way, were the trolls out in full force tonight?

“The Yankees announced late Tuesday night that Ian Kennedy will be called up Saturday to start in place of Mike Mussina.

Frankly, I’m a little surprised but not shocked by the move. Kennedy has certainly post numbers suggesting he deserves a shot, but he’s also just 22-years-old and in his first season as a professional. Given the Yankees tendency to move slowly with young pitchers — look at Phil Hughes last year and the Joba Chamberlain rules this year — I thought the Yankees would leave Kennedy to pitch in Triple-A. He’d already told me that he was under the impression he was starting Game 1 of the playoffs.

However, Hughes nearly pitched a no-hitter in his second major league start, Edwar Ramirez struck out the side in his debut and Chamberlain has become the Yankees top setup man, so New York is suddenly in the mood to give young guys a chance.

I have no idea how good Kennedy will be up there. His stuff isn’t overpowering, but it’s all very, very good. He hits his spots, changes speeds and mixes pitches. Oddly enough, he’s a little bit like Mussina.

Now the Yankees are hoping he’s even better.”

  38. Go NYR

Kennedy may have a lot of innings but Im sick of the babying of pitcher these days. Its very annoying.

  39. Dr. Acula

    Welcome aboard Mr. Kennedy

  41. Go NYR

I think we have Becketts number

  42. Go NYR

You know how the Angels have rally monkeys? Someone should make a rally Squirrel. We would get 27 for sure.

  43. frits

the todd – i feel ya, bradda! when i moved back to NJ this spring, one of the things that excited me the most was to be able to watch the season unfold on TV and not have to deal with gameday or that mlb.tv sh*t (sucked last year, heard it’s better this year). don’t worry though, you’ll be able to see them on tv in october.

  44. Carmine

    Frits:

While no one is immune to arm problems, Kerry Wood threw(I’m not sure where he is now velocity-wise) close to 100 when he first came up. I’d be more concerned with Joba having Kerry Wood-like problems if the Yankees weren’t careful with him(and we all know they have been). I’m fairly certain Kennedy’s fastball is in the 92-93 range and he relies more on an impressive arsenal and good control to get hitters out. Again, they need to monitor all their young pitchers, but he’s not the same type of pitcher as Wood.

  45. Kyle Litke

The reason you don’t make the move now is because someone has to go down and not even have a chance for the playoffs. It’s not Mussina, he’s not being cut, just missing at least one start. So who gets cut, Shelley Duncan? Because we MIGHT think about using Ian Kennedy as a theoretical 4th starter if he does well and Hughes doesn’t? Probably better to keep Shelley.

And I believe he can just get called up Saturday without a move as long as he’s on the 40 man.

  46. Go NYR

Brackman is off the 40 man. Its not rocket science

  47. YankeeJosh

    Kyle,

All I’m saying is to add Kennedy to the 40 man roster now. Not to call him up to the big club. That should be done Saturday.

  48. Richard C

Thank you Mike Mussina for everything you have done for the Yankees over the years. God bless you and Good luck.

  49. umbrellaman

The way I see it they need 3 40 man moves, if they want to bring up Kennedy, reactivate Mientkiewicz and also bring up Nieves. Brackman to the 60 day DL is one. DFA Brower is another easy one. After that it gets tricky. Thompson might be a useful pinch runner, Gardner is not on the 40 man. Maybe DFA Henn? Use Igawa and Wright as lefties out of the pen?

  50. Carmine

As a sidenote, the Angels have pulled to within 5-4.

  51. Go NYR

Kirkjian just said Joba is the first pitcher since 1900 to hold his opponents scoreless in his first eight appearances with a strikeout in each of them! WOW!

  52. Patrick Bateman

Kennedy is the perfect person to be called up. He’s got 4 pitches ready, unlike Joba and Hughes who work primarily with 2 right now. He is a Mussina-like pitcher, but has the fastball that make his off speed pitches work, unlike Mike.

  53. stuart

I am glad SJ is happy with Kennedy. I thank Cahs for rolling the dice. To bad Moose could not get it done.. He will pitch on th eside and see what happens.. I like the move; desalvo, karstens, and others do not have the upside Kennedy supposively has.

Yeah the Yanks buy all there players and hate young guys!!!!!They have so many homegrown players and young arms it is great..

    angels down 5 to 4 2 on 1 out in the 5th!!!!!!

  54. Go NYR

Bateman- Joba has 4 pitches, just only needs 2 for relief

  55. Matty

It’s a damn shame that Kennedy would never get an at-bat in Yankee Stadium.

Because then we’d hear Bob Sheppard announce…

    (waaaaaait for it…)

  56. Carmine

I think Jeff Weaver went into a telephone booth between innings and came back out as Jeff Weaver Pre-Disabled List Stint.

  57. Matty

BTW, as a quick explanation, there is a rapidly rising pro wrestler by the name of Ken Kennedy. He’s like the Rock crossed with Billy Idol. His gimmick is to do his own ring intros, and he announces himself as…

    “KENNEDY…

    *pause pause pause*

    …KENNEDY!”

  58. Luthien

Patrick Bateman…..thats from American Psycho isn’t it? Awesome movie.

  59. JOBA TO THE RESCUE

would u be confortible puting ree rookies in the starting rotation next year ill feel more confitble to do it if we had johan because he will wim allmst all of his starts

  60. J-Dawg

    We’re tied at Safeco!

  61. Carmine

Angels tied it. Wooot. Never thought I’d be rooting for their pesky lineup.

  62. J-Dawg

    Matty,

I think it’s funny how he gets up on the turnbuckle to say it the second time!

  63. ryu

hopefully kennedy can give us a couple of good starts before Mussina comes back.

  64. A. Phil

    Hip Hip Ken-ne-dy!!

  65. LV_Yank

Sad as it is the Yanks had no choice but to replace Mussina.

A fast ball maxing out at 85mph will not cut it in the majors no less the AL. I don’t care if you have 20 other different pitches the fastball sets everything else up.

I’m sure Mike is not pleased but there is absolutely nothing about his last three efforts that merits encouragement…not a single at bat.

It was time for a change, something tells me even “Moose”, the pro that he is, understands.

  66. Wolf In Pinstripes

Kennedy? Wow. To quote Pete from the in-game blog, “Oh, doctor.” Great news.

I agree with Jim Johnson, though. I’m not sure if it’s a great move in regards to Kennedy’s development, but dammit, I want to see Ian pitch. Something to look forward to this weekend.

BTW, if Giulani ends up being right with his prediction and then ends up making the presidential ticket, I’m voting for his butt.

  67. CATYA

YANKEES WIN, THEEEE YANKEES WIN!!!! ANDY ROCKS!

  68. Stef

Patrick Bateman: What are you talking about? Hughes and Joba don’t work with just two pitches. Hughes has four and so does Joba. While Hughes uses all of his; Joba doesn’t need to in his reliever position. Joba himself talked about this in interviews.

  69. CATYA

ON THE VERY DAY I CALLED OUT JETER AND DAMOM FOR THEIR RECENT LOUSY AT BATS,THEY WIN THE GAME FOR THE BOMBERS
    “WHODA THUNK IT”?

  70. J-Dawg

    Carmine,

Yeah I feel dirty having to root for the pesky Angels. The worst part is rooting for a team managed by Mike Scioscia. These playoff races force us to make sacrifices!

  71. Patrick Bateman

    NYR:

Joba has 2 plus pitches. He’s still working to get his others up to the level of his fastball and slider.

  72. Jonathan Everett

    Please don’t vote for Guliani?

  73. JJNJ

I saw Kennedy in Scranton a couple weeks ago, really looking forward to seeing how he does Saturday.

  74. Joe L

This is great news. I like the move and I like that Cash didn’t make us eat another helping of Igawa/DeSalvo/Karstens in this spot.

I hope Kennedy can keep his emotions in check enough to pitch a good game and give the team the quality starts it desperately needs at this point.

As for Mussina, this is the right call….but something tells me it’s not the last we’ve seen of him. If this rest and side work can help him unlock some velocity again on his fastball, he might play a big part that none of us see coming. Kind of like Gollum in Lord of The Rings.

  75. susan mullen

I’m not surprised at younger pitchers. It took a few years after George’s re-involvement, getting stuck with onerous contracts, political machinations of the kitchen cabinet in Tampa, $100 million in revenue sharing and luxury tax, it’s a miracle they’ve done it this soon.

  76. CATYA

SUSAN MULLEN YOU SOUND LIKR A “BOTOX TROLL” GO BACK TO “BAWSTON”

    Hello Ian.

  79. DesignatedBlogger

Just saw this. Good news! Moose has nothing left. Maybe he can be the pitching coach one day.

    Good luck to Ian.

  80. wicket

I don’t know how good this Kennedy kid is going to be. Frankly, the Yankees have been pretty lucky with young pitching prospects succeeding so far. Just ’cause Chamberlain has pitched 10 great innings doesn’t necessarily mean that this team can rely on youth to take them to the playoffs. That aside, I hope he works out.

  81. Stef

Patrick Bateman: HELLO?!! Joba is NOT “working on” two other pitches to get them up to speed. What do you think he was using while he was a SP in the minors and and mowing down lineups? Two pitches? WRONG!! Joba throws four pitches for STRIKES right now. Relievers don’t need to pull out four pitches — they go for the quick kill as they will not be facing batters again in that game.

Get your facts straight. All you’d really need to do is actually read what Joba has said in his interviews.

  82. Sherard

Oy. Joba with just 2 pitches ? What was the slow wrinkle he threw a few times tonight at 85 mph ? They call that a curveball in most circles. That’s the pitch Lowell hit for a soft liner to left. I haven’t seen the changeup yet, I don’t think, but I’ve only caught about half his innings live.

  83. wallypip

Hey Pete: Any word on how many innings Kennedy is allowed pitch? He pitched 102 in college last year and has hit 146 professional innings this year. I’m sure the Yankees have a set plan for how much work he can get.

BTW, for all of the “sick of innings caps” folks, just by promoting Kennedy at this stage and commtting to 1-2 starts the Yankees are already committed to not babying him. He’s going to get at least 50 more innings this year than last year. That’s a significant jump and he’s going to do it in a high pressure situation. Whatever cap the Yankees use is very reasonable.

  84. Adam

I have a feeling Kennedy is going to get knocked around. I’m not so sure about this move, but I guess its the best option given the alternatives (White, Moose, Igawa).

  85. Stingo

    Hey, Pete-
Kennedy has thrown 146 innings this year and is just a year older than Chamberlain. Do they Yankees not have the same concern about his arm? How many innings would they want him to throw this year? Isn’t he right around his ideal limit?
