Chamberlain: I didn’t do it

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Aug 30, 2007 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Joba Chamberlain’s ejection was the subject of much of the postgame talk instead of the work of Robinson Cano and Chien-Ming Wang.

Chamberlain said he was not throwing at Kevin Youkilis. “I was just letting it loose trying to get a swinging strike,” he said. “I have too much respect for the game and for that team to do something like that.

Said Terry Francona: “If that young man was trying to get our attention, he did a good job of it.”

Joe Torre was furious with home plate umpire Angel Hernandez. “The umpires have to be schooled somehow so they have a better sense of the game,” he said.

Good Lord, that must of been terrifying for Youkillis. Two 98mph fastballs at your head…That seriously would kill him.

  2. Joe from Long Island August 30th, 2007 at 5:19 pm

I was listening to Suzyn Waldman while driving home, and she said that Joe sought out Youkilis to tell him that they weren’t throwing at him; Youkilis was supposedly as surprised as anyone that Joba was tossed. Joe was furious, as Suzyn quoted him. Peter, do you have that on audio?

  3. Kei Igawa August 30th, 2007 at 5:21 pm

I would never throw at someone’s head. Call me up…..please?

  4. jonathan August 30th, 2007 at 5:22 pm

can anyone please tell me why joba was in the game in the first place? Ummmm joe, you have a damn bullpen!!! i cant stand his bullpen mismanagement anymore. i hope he goes away after this season before he hurts any more arms.

  5. J-Dawg August 30th, 2007 at 5:23 pm

Angel Hernandez needs to be schooled on how to say the alphabet and how to count past ten(without taking off his shoes).

  6. Armand August 30th, 2007 at 5:23 pm

That was just a terrible call by angel hernandez.. i really don’t understand why in hell he would make that decision, in a 5 run game, on an amped up 21 year old kid, and if he doesn’t notice Joba didn’t quite have his best control today.. what is up with Angel Hernandez man?!?! can you interview the him Pete? i’d really like to know his justification of that call..

  7. This just in ...... August 30th, 2007 at 5:24 pm

Kevin Millar called Damon on his cell and said, “Hey Johnny…watch me put some hurt on our old team this weekend”.

  8. Armand August 30th, 2007 at 5:26 pm

so many grammar and syntax errors on my part.. sorry… just quite miffed at that preposterous call

  9. SJ44 August 30th, 2007 at 5:28 pm

Who cares. After today, Joba just needs to turn the page.

He wasn’t throwing at him and he doesn’t have to explain himself to anybody.

If the Red Sox don’t like it, they can act like tough guys in the next series.

Between now and then, they better win some games.

Right now, the Yankees main objective shouldn’t be to make the Red Sox feel comfortable. They just need to keep winning games.

  10. CaptainsCorner August 30th, 2007 at 5:29 pm

That was absolutely a joke!!! Dice K hits Arod in the ribs and the umpire doesnt say 1 word??!! They throw at Jeter and Arod all the time and that is ok. But Youk the great actor goes nuts and Joba gets thrown out? The pitch was no where near Youk…Can you explain the difference to me? Yanks always just walk to 1st base, Boston players cry and the umpire takes there side. Just pathetic..what now Joba will be suspended for 2 games because of this bull. I am surprised that they actually got the call right with Youk running out of the baseline and not just mess up another play…Also Francona shut your mouth..the ball was no where near him..but keep beaning Arod whenever you like..Torre better fight this with the commissioner.

  11. Taylor August 30th, 2007 at 5:29 pm

Did anyone ask Joe why Joba was even in the game given the rules?

  12. nyyfaninlaaland August 30th, 2007 at 5:30 pm

My guess is Torre was throwing Joba a bone, letting him get his first save. Might have been nice to let Britton get his feet wet though.

  13. Jonathan Everett August 30th, 2007 at 5:32 pm

Well if he gets suspended for 2 games, he gets 2 automatic games off anyway. How long does it take to dish out a punishment?

  14. AnatInc August 30th, 2007 at 5:32 pm

Francona would be better served trying to figure out who is going to hit cleanup for the time being.

  15. J-Dawg August 30th, 2007 at 5:34 pm

All of this has overshadowed what was a gutsy performance by Chien-Ming Wang. Wang only gave up Mike Lowell’s little roller. He gave up a few walks but he never broke. The rough patch of two to three weeks ago was just a small bump in the road, nothing more. Wang is back to showing last year’s form. More often than not, he’ll give us a performance to remember, just like this one.

  16. nyyfaninlaaland August 30th, 2007 at 5:34 pm

And no “rules” violation – the rule is use dictates rest. So he goes 2, he gets 2. Means he would have missed next 2 days. Maybe now we’ll see the “Youk’s Noggin” corollary – went 1.1, gets 1 day, can only go 2/3 on Saturday.

  17. ramar August 30th, 2007 at 5:37 pm

Maybe Joe shoulda put Farnsworthless in I guess for the 9th?

  18. ramar August 30th, 2007 at 5:37 pm

Maybe Joe shoulda put Farnsworthless in I guess for the 9th?

  19. keith August 30th, 2007 at 5:38 pm

How are you guys *so* sure it wasn’t on purpose? If it was props to Joba for sending a message.

  20. ramar August 30th, 2007 at 5:41 pm

What message do you send? You can’t hit the kid to begin with, so take that ( throwing at a player )?

  21. Pittsburgh Yankee August 30th, 2007 at 5:42 pm

    Umpires: get a clue.

By the way, did anyone see that article in the Wall Street Journal or NY Times where they showed a statistical analysis that umps are more likely to call a strike if they and the pitcher are the same race?

Francona: this crap is not going to amp up your club. They are exposed, bro. Pitching does win championships–when your team can hit. Two near no-no’s in a row, man.

MLB: if you suspend Joba, expect a response from Randy Levine et al. With all the BS the Yankees take from the league office, despite their being the league’s cash cow, I am sure they’re just chomping at the bit.

  22. matt frags August 30th, 2007 at 5:44 pm

HA! They drill Jeter and Arod every chance they get and start to cry foul when Yanks throw the ball NEAR one of their hitters? LOL…

Since Francona took the job… Boston has hit twice as many Yankee batters!

Notice they didn’t say peep when Roger nailed Pedrioa (which was obviously done on purpose)… I called it last night. If Joba was going to throw at Boston… He would have nailed Papi on Monday…

SO… when Matsuzaka drills Arod in the back (TWICE) after we see Taverez on camera explaining to Dice-K to do so… That is part of the game… A pitcher has to pitch inside? BUT… when Yanks pitch inside… AND DO NOT EVEN HIT BATTER… during a BLOW OUT… Yankee pitchers are throwing at hitters?

  23. keith August 30th, 2007 at 5:49 pm

maybe he didnt appreciate youkilis acting like a screaming pig after he tried to cheat his way out of getting tagged?

  24. KurticusMaximus August 30th, 2007 at 5:56 pm

There’s no message to send when you’re up by 5 in the ninth inning. You know Joba’s talked to Rocket about retaliation, and while Rocket is all about keeping the other team in line, even he would make it clear that the game comes first. Top of the ninth? You send a message by winning the game. It was two mistakes, and a preemptive call by the ump. Given the history between the teams, and the nonsense with Youk and Francona, it’s at least understandable.

And actually, I was happy Torre left Joba in. If anything, these rules err significantly on the side of caution. Leaving him in one inning isn’t going to throw everything out of whack.

But with five runs worth of breathing space, playing a high-pressure team, this was the perfect opportunity to get Joba more experience. Plus, I think to some extent Torre wanted to give Joba the opportunity to give up his first run. It’s going to happen eventually, and letting him get that over with in a controlled situation like that inning would have been ideal. Things get out of hand, you bring Mo in. Otherwise, Joba gets a chance to work out of a tough situation.

Anyway, the ejection makes it a non-issue. Joba only pitched an extra five pitches, so no harm done.

SJ44 “Who cares. After today, Joba just needs to turn the page.
He wasn’t throwing at him and he doesn’t have to explain himself to anybody.”

    1. You don’t know that.
    2. He does have to explain himself even if he wasn’t head hunting for the simple fact that he has to protect his guys. If he says no comment it’s assumed it was intentional and someone on the yankees goes down next series. Sure, boston probably won’t buy his explanation and someone will probably pay, but he has to try.

  26. KurticusMaximus August 30th, 2007 at 6:02 pm

Mark- someone on the Yankees will go down next series. Doesn’t matter what Joba says. There is no question in my mind, and I’d bet it’ll be Beckett.

  27. csano August 30th, 2007 at 6:05 pm

FYI: It didn’t look like Youkilis said anything after that second pitch flew over his head. He just stared at Joba. If anything, Angel tossed Joba on his own.

  28. Bob Michaels August 30th, 2007 at 6:12 pm

stop crying Red Sox Trolls your`e team is going down the Drain , Manny is out another 10 games.

  29. CaptainsCorner August 30th, 2007 at 6:15 pm

Jeter and Arod get hit by there pitchers on purpose every series anyway…It will happen again and they will just walk to 1st base like they always do. Instead of making a scene like Youk always has to..he would be a good actor. I definitely dont think what Joba did was on purpose…but the Yanks were going to get hit next time whether that happened or not….It is like clock work in every series..Manny and Ortiz hit homeruns…Jeter and or Arod get hit..
If Joba gets suspended then they will just wait until he pitches 2 innings in a game and then because of the “Torre dont blow out the young kids arm rules” he cant pitch for 2 days anyway so he will just sit those 2 days. So he wont miss any time.

  30. CaptainsCorner August 30th, 2007 at 6:17 pm

“FYI: It didn’t look like Youkilis said anything after that second pitch flew over his head. He just stared at Joba. If anything, Angel tossed Joba on his own.”

He did say something. He looked at the umpire and said something to him, like what was that, or are you kidding me.

  31. Joe da man August 30th, 2007 at 6:20 pm

Joba looked like he was over pitching. Trying to put too much into the pitches, maybe get over 100 to impress the fans, and it got away. Trying it two times in a row is a rookie mistake, then again, he IS A ROOKIE.

If he was trying to send a message then he would have hit the Ugliest man in Baseball and probably taken him out of the game for a bit.

His pitching today wasn’t a crisp as it usually is. When he saw his control wasn’t as sharp he tried to do more.

Francona is an idiot, he was tossed from the game because he knew Youkilass would have been, and maybe would have faced suspension. He is still an idiot. Trying to use Joba’s two pitches to fire up his team after the “best” team in baseball got swept by the lowly Yankee losers.

  32. Helio August 30th, 2007 at 6:25 pm

I don’t think he did it on purpose but it plants a thought in his future opponents’ heads and adds to the discomfort of facing him. “Ok, he throws 100 and once in a while the ball ends up where your head is.”

  33. mark August 30th, 2007 at 6:35 pm

“I don’t think he did it on purpose but it plants a thought in his future opponents’ heads and adds to the discomfort of facing him.”

It also plants the idea in umps heads that he throws at hitters. He needs to be able to pitch inside. Just another reason to deny, deny, deny.

  34. jennifer August 30th, 2007 at 9:18 pm

Okay I got to see it for the first time. The balls sailed way over his head. I don’t think it was on purpose. Even though Youk is a whiney ahole. If he didn’t duck it still would have sailed over his head.

And when Joe was talking to the ump, Jorge was standing there listening shaking his head no. And when Joba went into the dugout none of his teamates slaped him on the back which indicates that it wasn’t. Usually you see a back slap when it was on purpose. Just my thoughts.

  35. jennifer August 30th, 2007 at 9:21 pm

Also someone in the game blog said that the soxs were yelling and screaming and Josh said the c-t word. Did yes cut that out for the rebroadcast or was he just lying?
