The Yankees took a step back last night with a 9-1 loss against Tampa Bay. Kevin Devaney has the story.

Joba Chamberlain was suspended for two games. This notebook also has word from Dave Eiland, Ian Kennedy’s pitching coach in Scranton.

    Good morning NYC!
Hey I used to be Huges 2.50, I think I gained twice my bodyweight.

  2. Jim PA September 1st, 2007 at 9:56 am

Jackson is 4-12, and the D-Rays can’t have much of a book on Kennedy. If we can’t win today…

  3. InsertNewSN September 1st, 2007 at 10:10 am

Scouting reports can only do so much though, Jim PA. I know what you mean, and I really hope today’s game works out, but if Kennedy doesn’t have great stuff today, they’ll probably hit him pretty well :-(

  4. Winfield killed my seagull September 1st, 2007 at 10:12 am

    Pete,
Alberto Gonzalez is joing the club today??? didn’t take him long to find a new job.

  5. Winfield killed my seagull September 1st, 2007 at 10:13 am

    joining…..damn!!!

  6. Joe from Long Island September 1st, 2007 at 10:13 am

Boston is being hit by the injury bug. Wakefield missed his start yesterday, Drew out with a foot (?) problem, Manny out, Ortiz hurting. Youkilis hit twice (strange, but no word on anyone being ejected.) This is our time to make a move, which makes the loss yesterday all the more frustrating.

  7. Bob55 September 1st, 2007 at 10:23 am

Losing JD Drew would probably help the Red Sox.

  8. Hughes out, Mussina in September 1st, 2007 at 10:30 am

Mussina has to start in place of Hughes vs. Seattle Wed.9/5 because Hughes isn’t cutting it either but you have to give the nod to the veteran, you just do. I think Mussina has the ability to be better than what he was his last start and Hughes was last night. I can’t say that about Hughes.

Say all you want about Mussina, the bottom line is he went 6-4 with a 3.54 ERA in a dozen starts before his 3-start 17.70 meltdown. He’s who he is and done what he’s done. What the hell has Hughes done but had only 2 good starts out of 8 total for his entire career? NOTHING.

  9. Stuart September 1st, 2007 at 10:32 am

Hughes is having trouble with his curve..I am not sure what they do with him.. the back end of the rotation is killing them.. I say give him another start or 2..

I see glimpses of a star but too many walks, too predictable in his pitches, I am suprised he is not doing better…

terrible game yesterday they had a chance to go up by 2, now they have a 1st game starter, never know what will happen. Jackson has been pitching better, the good news is he throws hard, the Yanks like to hit against hard throwers…

  10. Hughes out, Mussina in September 1st, 2007 at 10:33 am

Start Mussina 9/5 and have Hughes on standby. They have the next day off, so they can afford to do this.

  11. TV September 1st, 2007 at 10:48 am

Does anyone know how to watch the game today via computer, because MLB.TV is blacked out?

  12. Hughes out, Mussina in September 1st, 2007 at 10:52 am

    Hey Stuart

Why should Hughes get another start or two but Mussina shouldn’t? Hughes has had exactly ONE good start since his return (6 starts): his win. If we go by Mussina’s last 6 starts, he’s been better than Hughes. Mussina deserves one more start more than him. Hughes hasn’t done jack. He’s all hype with very little actual accomplishment to back it up (2 wins, one exactly 4 months ago). Name me a no decision Hughes should’ve won, I can’t. Mussina going 6-4, 3.54 ERA in 12 GS before a 3-game slide has to count for something.

There’s no time for weak links in the rotation. If not Mussina and anyone wants to say “no Igawa”, he pitched well in AAA. They need someone to stabilize the rotation since Mussina and Hughes can’t. Kennedy is no lock to do well today. I’d take Igawa over DeSalvo and White (you can’t have White cuz then he’s another guy making his M.L.B. debut).

The Yanks should’ve re-signed David Wells, I could care less about his last history with the Yanks (2003 World Series) or that Torre and Cashman hate him. He’s better than Mussina, Hughes, or anyone not good enough to get the call over Kennedy who Wells might be better than, too. I blame Torre, Zimmer, Stottemyre, and Monahan more than Wells. It was their jobs to make sure Wells was good to go in that World Series game, not Wells, or do the inmates run the asylum? He was a pretty damn fine Yankee before that (1998, 2002-3, good enough to be the main trading chip in the Yanks getting Clemens after ’98). And you can’t kill the guy for doing whatever he did the eve of that World Series game then applaud him for doing the same the eve of his perfect game and who knows how many of his postseason starts in ’98.

  13. Jim PA September 1st, 2007 at 10:57 am

I agree about Wells. As soon as I heard he was jobless I immediately thought of the Yanks picking him up for insurance. Could have had him for peanuts, too (no pun intended).

  14. Johhny Pell September 1st, 2007 at 11:00 am

Wil Nieves should be added to the 40 man…Sept. requires a 3rd catcher…
Also, there is no reason why Mussina shouldn’t pitch in relief. Let him work it out after Kennedy…

Good to see Betemit at 1b

  15. dontfirecash September 1st, 2007 at 11:04 am

I’d rather see Alan Horne get a start than have to suffer through another Mussina/Hughes performance. Unfortunately, since he has thrown 30 innings more than last season and appears to be tiring, I doubt that will happen.

  16. Hughes out, Mussina in September 1st, 2007 at 11:12 am

Wells > Mussina, Hughes, Igawa, DeSalvo, Kennedy unless Kennedy shines today (by shine I mean at least 5 IP, 1-3 runs which is a nice start and wayyy better than what Mussina and Hughes have given in their last 9 starts combined).

If L.A. releases Wells again (I doubt it), he must be signed a.s.a.p. at whatever cost. Is there ANYONE out there who could be signed to start even just a game or two? Scott Elarton? K.C. released him after the Yanks shellacked him.
I’m thinking any thrown away veteran retread. Joel Pinero?
    Someone?

B.t.w. even now in 2007, I take Wells as the Game 4 starter in any postseason series over anyone the Yanks have after Wang, Pettitte, and Clemens save Joba who has to be in relief.

  17. adkwriter September 1st, 2007 at 11:19 am

You people are seriously crazy. I mean, seriously, unbelievably and completely unreasonably attacking a kid and talking about replacing him with Scott f*cking Elarton?

    Good lord.

I am NOT proud to be a Yankee fan when those types are about.

  18. Phil September 1st, 2007 at 11:22 am

Horne gave up 5 ER in 5 innings in yesterday’s start at AA.

  19. dontfirecash September 1st, 2007 at 11:25 am

    Phil,
I am aware, just throwing it out there. Some scouts said that Horne could have helped the Yankees at midseason.

  20. Phil September 1st, 2007 at 11:25 am

Wells and all of the other retreads are not options. The only options are: Mussina, Hughes, Kennedy, and Igawa for the 4 and 5 slots in the rotation. White is an option, but a far-fetched option, I would have to think. The others (DeSalvo, Karstens, etc) that they’ve already tried, are options too…but I would imagine we’d see them only if the wheels completely came off the bus and Wang, Clemens, and Pettitte were all injured.

  21. TV September 1st, 2007 at 11:25 am

Isnt there something called like Sopcast or something that will bring the Yankee game today?

  22. Phil September 1st, 2007 at 11:28 am

TV: Yes, Sopcast will most likely have the game.

  23. TV September 1st, 2007 at 11:29 am

Phil do you know the link that I would use to download it on my computer, thanks for the help.

  24. Phil September 1st, 2007 at 11:31 am

I don’t have the link, but if you google sopcast, it should come up.

  25. Stuart September 1st, 2007 at 11:32 am

Moosw had a 17 ERA..not a 7 ERA.. 17!!!!!!!!!!!that is almost impossible to do over 3 games.. the guy is averaging 3 innings and change that is why. also moose cannot strike anyone else nor have anyone missed the ball with the bat on almost any pitch.. those minor reasons..

also moose has sucked beyond belief in his last 3 starts, but dream on about the moose resurrection..

  26. Phil September 1st, 2007 at 11:32 am

Google: ‘sopcast yankees’ and it is the first link.

  27. adkwriter September 1st, 2007 at 11:33 am

    Kennedy’s Line Today?

    5 IP/4 H/3 ER/2 B/4 K

    That sounds reasonable.

  28. CATYA September 1st, 2007 at 11:34 am

Did you hear the latetest joke from” Soxspot.com”?

    QUESTION:

How does a team(Orioles) end a 9 game losing streak?

    ANSWER:

Play the “Bawston Red Sox”!!!!!! priceless…..

    GO YANKEES!!!!!

  29. Phil September 1st, 2007 at 11:34 am

Moose is not done as a major league pitcher. Whether it happens later this year or next…he has too many pitches that move, with good location, to not be successful again. He just needs to learn to differentiate the speeds between his pitches and use his off-speed stuff to set-up the below average fastball. HE can stil be a serviceable major league starter.

  30. Mr. Vegas September 1st, 2007 at 11:38 am

Two final thoughts on the Joba suspension:

First, I seem to recall someone here calling people “ignorant” for thinking that Joba might be suspended. I guess that criticism was misdirected.

Second, I still don’t get the mindset of people here who were celebrating the fact that Yankees pitchers are “finally” retaliating for balls being thrown at Yankees batters. So far, the only consequence I see from such retaliation is suspensions.

  31. dontfirecash September 1st, 2007 at 11:39 am

    Phil,
I agree. Moose needs to reinvent himself. Look at Moyer; he probably throws an 86mph fastball but he is still an effective pitcher.

  32. gayle September 1st, 2007 at 11:41 am

Very weird at the stadium right now no batting practice for either team and just a bunch of pitchers out in the outfield tossing thinlk moose and wang are in the bullpen working. Beautiful day for baseball

  33. Stuart September 1st, 2007 at 11:45 am

moose needs to sow down his offspeed more…

Chamberlain was suspended because MLB are morons…

Gammons is outraged by the clothing police(he should be) but funny there is no outrage over the Joba nonsense…

Sure a 21 yr old kid tries twice to throw a 98 MPH fastball at a guys head!!!!Really he wants to kill someone????????
    give me a break……….

  34. Kill-Schill(ing) September 1st, 2007 at 11:45 am

TV. Yes, download a program called sopcast.

And then use the following link to find the correct station.

    http://myp2p.eu/MLB.htm

  35. Phil September 1st, 2007 at 11:45 am

As someone who grew up in Baltimore, I got to see Moose come up through the Orioles system and make his debut. I feel for the guy and hope he turns it around.

  36. Kill-Schill(ing) September 1st, 2007 at 11:46 am

You can find the program here: http://www.sopcast.com/download/

  37. TV September 1st, 2007 at 11:47 am

    Cool Thanks everyone. GO YANKS!

  38. Andrea September 1st, 2007 at 11:53 am

Does anyone knwo if I can use sopcast if I am using a mac?

  39. murphydog September 1st, 2007 at 11:54 am

As I mentioned in the prior thread, Hughes is 21 years old, still learning on the job, and if I had to bet, he’s still not 100% recovered after the ankle injury (velocity maybe down a mph or two). His competitive nature is making him overthrow and force results. He’s not pitching, he’s throwing. It’s what a kid does when coming back from injury with all the pressure he has on him to win to help his team. Getting him right will require finding a way to get him to relax and go one batter at a time. Sit him down with Rocket.

  40. 89 September 1st, 2007 at 11:55 am

Hah, i think Moyer stopped hitting 86pmh in 1996.

    He is low 80′s consistently..

  41. Bob Michaels September 1st, 2007 at 12:11 pm

just an aside Fatso Bob watson is a power Crazed madman

  42. Lee September 1st, 2007 at 6:57 pm

When Wells get his cortisone shot, he’s good for 4-6 weeks.

He’s going to give the Dodgers a good run the next couple of weeks, cause he just got his shot. He’s rested, and his back is good, until the shot wears off. Then he’s done for the season.
