Catching up on a few stats and an old movie

A few chilly Yankees:

Johnny Damon is 1 for his last 19

Hideki Matsui is 4 for 26 on the homestand with one RBI and one extra-base hit

Jason Giambi is 2 of his last 20 with no RBI

A few hot Yankees:

Well, um …

Hey, here’s one. Alex Rodriguez has stolen four bases in the last seven games and has 22 on the season. That’s his most since he swiped 28 in 2004. He could be headed for his first 30/30 season since 1998 when he had 42 homers and 46 steals.

A few other trends:

The Yanks have 6 hits in their last 38 at-bats with runners in scoring position.

The pitchers have allowed 50 hits and 28 earned runs in the last 36 innings.

Meanwhile, I stayed up late last night, talking to an old friend from Connecticut and catching up on the stats. Just before I intended to go to bed, I flipped the channels and Robin Hood Prince of Thieves was on.

robin_hood_prince_of_thieves.jpgHow great a movie is that? Costner is his close to his Bull Durham-best, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio at the peak of her hottness, Alan Rickman steals the movie as the Sheriff of Nottingham and Sean Connery with a great uncredited cameo at the end.

I believe that also was the movie where Morgan Freeman got his start as a the cool and wise black friend, a role he would reprise in Unforgiven, Shawshank Redemption and Million Dollar Baby.

In short, there’s nothing wrong with that movie. In 16 years, it holds up well. It’s one of those movies you have to watch until the end.
