A-Rod en route to making history

Peter Abraham
September

ph_121347.jpgAlex Rodriguez has 48 homers, 125 runs scored and 134 RBI. It seems pretty safe to say that he’s going to end up with at least 50 homers, 130 runs and 140 RBI.

In the history of the Yankees, only Babe Ruth (1921, ‘27 and ‘28) and Roger Maris (1961) have ever done that.

Sammy Sosa (1998, 2001) and Mark McGwire (1998) are the most recent players to reach those plateaus. Before they injected himself into history, you have to go back to Maris. Prior to Maris, the last player to reach 50 HR/130 runs/140 RBI was Hank Greenberg in 1938.

As I was researching this on the great baseball-reference.com Play Index, I had to stop and marvel at what Hack Wilson did in 1930.

He went .356/.454/.723 with 146 runs scored, 97 extra-base hits, 105 walks and 191 RBI. I can’t imagine that ever happening again.

injected into history…you are the best, Peter !

  2. Jim Clark

The most rbis since WWII was Manny Ramirez with 165 in 1999. Wilson had some kind of finish thelast two months: 91 rbi after August 1st. But the ball was juiced from 1925 to 1931 and so was Wilson.

  3. Matt

Why was there no 1930 MVP voting?

  4. Chicago Dave

    Juiced on what, moonshine?!

  5. jj

    Brian: Alex,how about 33 mil a year?
Scott and Alex in unison Nah, make it 35 and you have a deal!!

  6. Jones

    “injected themselves,” not “injected himself”

  7. jennifer

Lost in the sauce, Phil had a HUGE game today. Maybe his pitching coach being there helped him out.

  8. J-Dawg

A-Rod continues to amaze while Scott Boras says “CHA-CHING!!”

  9. Chicago Dave

And the White Sox don’t score in the top of the 10th…

I’d be shocked if Detroit doesn’t finish this soon!

  10. Dustin

What do you think Cashman’s response is to every A-Rod homerun?

“YES!! YES!! GET OUTTA HERE!!! oh crap”.

  11. TKinDC

Call me superstitious, but for A-Rod, I think every day has to start out with an MRI until he has a bad day. Apparently the radiation recharges his super-human powers.

  12. J-Dawg

Vernon Wells with a two-run blast, Jays lead 6-4!!

  13. mel

I think ‘Deki just gave up a 2-run shot.

  14. Rebecca

    VERNON WELLS!

Hah, and they didn’t want A-Rod to play!

  15. EY

    Okajima scares nobody now.
But CWS put 2 on base and nothing came out of it.

  16. buchholz eleven

    toronto 6 boston 4

    haters where u at b*tches?

  17. Catya

Alex, is earning his pay this season. He still has to beat his post season stats. We need his bat alive in Oct. It’s almost like Boras said “give me some room to ask for the sky” when the Yankees and us meet.

  18. TKinDC

I think Okajima might be cooked, apparently he never threw this many innings back in the land of the rising sun.

That was one of the reasons they picked up Gagne (giggle) because they didn’t think Okajima could handle the full load down the stretch.

  19. MattNC

I’ve done some reading on the advent of the “live ball” era around 1920, and it seems that the ball didn’t really change much. What happened was new rules were instituted that resulted in the use of many more baseballs per game. Previously, only a few balls would be used over the course of an entire game. Foul balls would be thrown back into play. The balls would get dirty, possibly wet, and mashed around a bit. When they started using lots of baseballs, hitters had a nice, white baseball to hit. Another change was the realization that hitting for power was a feasible way to win games, as Babe Ruth proved.

A-Rod still has a chance for 50-150-150, which has only been accomplished by two men (Ruth twice, and Foxx once). He’s currently on a pace for 56-155-147. That’s mind-boggling.

  20. Chicago Dave

Yes, “Best Team in BB” (chief Sux troll) swore he would be posting frequently during tonight’s game…So much for that! Must have been too busy watching his Sux blow the lead against Toronto…

However, to mimic “Best Team”…Yanks win, Sox lose, and the Yanks gain a game on everyone. Oh, and the Sux magic number goes NOWHERE. Couldn’t have been a more productive evening!

  21. Sherri

So, I just wonder what goes thru Alex’s head as he’s taking the curtain call? Is he remembering not so long ago when they were booing him relentlessly, or does he take it in stride considering where he works? It was a beautiful thing to see him perform tonight. I certainly hope he doesn’t leave and, honestly, why would he not want to go down in history as one of the Yankee greats? What better honor is there in baseball? I mean really. Because doing what he does is just that much more special when he does it in pinstripes.

  22. YanksFanLV

    Game!

  23. sunny615

    good night fur the yanks

  24. Rebecca

    WHOO TORONTO LOST!

  25. Sherri

Dave – are you channeling BB??

  26. MattNC

In regards to the MVP voting question, the award was not given in certain years. In addition, until 1931 or so (the advent of the officially-recognized MVP voting that continues to this day), previous winners were ineligible, costing Ruth a number of awards. I found this out while looking into why Ruth received not a single MVP vote in his amazing 1927 season, in which he hot 60 home runs.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M.....ayer_Award

  27. EY

Ohoh CWS. Ordonez coming up to the plate with men on 1 and 2.
    Doesn’t look good.

  28. Chicago Dave

Sherri – No…God no!!! It’s just that, like the rest of us, I’ve been subjected to enough of his BS rants that I know his..ahem…”style”, if you will!

  29. Chicago Dave

Rebecca – You mean “RED SOX LOST!”, don’t you?

  30. Chicago Dave

Chicago-Detroit now going to the 11th…Both these teams look hopeless right now!

  31. mel

    Rebecca,

LOL Bawlston lost. MVP Ordonez killed the rally in the bottom of the 10th.

    Sherri,

Depends. If things like being in monument park are important to Alex, he’ll stay.

  32. Sherri

Dave – HA! I understand! The blog is much more pleasant when we’re winning!

  33. Chicago Dave

Sherri – AMEN TO THAT! (Hopefully things will get better once registration begins, too!!)

  34. Rebecca

    Holy !$@#$#@ I can’t believe I said that…

Someone please get us edit buttons! Prime example there!

  35. Jimmy the Saint

Don’t forget, Hack was the furthest thing from a speed demon on the base paths. I bet Posada is faster than Wilson was, which makes his accomplishments more amazing.

  36. Brian

IMO this is where he wants to play and this is where he will play.

  37. Chicago Dave

As a Yankee fan, I still gotta take Gehrig over Wilson. Gehrig was an absolute RBI machine for most of his career.

  38. mel

14th pitcher of the game in the CWS/DET game. Ozzie’s putting in a rookie in extra innings.

  39. Chicago Dave

mel – Believe it or not, this CWS/DET game is getting incredibly boring to watch! I can’t take anymore scoreless innings and missed scoring opportunities…and I can’t take Hawk saying, “This is a HUGE game for the Tigers!”.

  40. Chicago Dave

Now Ozzie is actually chewing on his lineup card…

  41. Chicago Dave

    And the Tigers win…

  42. mel

I’ve got the Detroit feed. Their guys aren’t as bad as the Chicago crew. Needless to say, they don’t have much to cheer about. It’ over now. Detroit stays 3.5 back.

  43. EY

Bah walkoff single by the Tigers.
Saw that coming though, CWS is horrible.

  44. Chicago Dave

Oh well, it’s still a good night for us…and Chicago has the pitching matchup in their favor for tomorrow’s game.

  45. Rebecca

    Detroit just won.

  46. Chicago Dave

Rebecca – You’ve got to keep us with us, girl! ;)

  47. mel

A-rod must be so irritated with Bonds. He just keeps pushing that HR total up.

  48. Sherri

Don’t get me wrong – I’m thrilled about our wild card lead, but MAN, I wish we could take the DIVISION!!

    GO YANKEES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  49. Dr. Acula

*BIG SHIFT in the Pennant Race*

with Cleveland’s win and the Halo’s loss, the Indians and Angels are now tied for the 2nd seed.

Going to the show as a wild card, we’d face the second seed. That would mean Boston & Halos would have to fly cross country. Oh Gawd, please saddle them jet lag.

  50. VOIII

Hey George, You can’t take it with you….Give A-rod the keys to the Vault! He’s got to go to the HOF and the rcord Books in pinstripes….

  51. PAT M.....

Pete….Why would anyone want Wang to pitch Sept. 29th, wouldn’t you pefer to have him throw Game I in the ALDS…Unless that game had playoff importance…..

  52. kd

Arod will get a deal bigger than the one the he has already.

  53. Rebecca

Chi Dave–Sorry, was busy writing about Hughes, A-Rod and lousy umpires :-P

Pat M: You have Pettitte pitch Game 1, Clemens Game 2, Wang game 3…or, if Clemens is hurt, Hughes or Kennedy. Anyway, there are days off between the season and ALDS…

  54. YankeeJosh

    Pat…

It at least allows the option if the Yankees haven’t clinched yet. And the division series start later this year (Wednesday and Thursday I believe) so you could still pitch Wang and have him start the playoffs on normal or 3 days rest.

  55. BBB

“Injected themselves into history”…LOL, love it!

As for A-Rod, what is there even to say? He is just SICK!!! I have never seen anything like it in my life, and it is just SUCH a privilege to watch him have this kind of season. Here’s hoping he spends many MANY more years in the pinstripes!!

  56. Chicago Dave

Rebecca – Clemens in Game 2? Hmmm…I’m not sure I’d like to see that…

  57. mel

    Rebecca,

Do you have a blog? How come you don’t link it in your name?

  58. DMan77

Good win all around tonight. A-Rod’s coming up big this season.

Maybe they should always make him go get an MRI before game time?

  59. Brian

All I can say is that you have to like the make-up of the young guns, you can’t get that in AAA, you either have it or you don’t.

  60. Chicago Dave

Rebecca – mel makes a good point…You need to link your blog to your username.

  61. BBB

Oh and for the record re: ALDS pitching, I would want Pettitte going in game 1. We probably wouldn’t have home field advantage (tho you never know) so save Wang for the all-important Game 3 at home!

If we do have HFA I’d want Wang going in game 2 though. As long as we’d have Pettitte opening the series and Wang making his start at home, ya gotta feel pretty good about that :)

  62. A. Phil

I sense another prolonged losing streak for the M’s. Our real competition=Tigers.

  63. mel

    http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/.....id=3006698

Check out Torre’s quote at the end. “Prospective wife” Uh, Torre, non-baseball people say “fiance”. Funny.

  64. Brian

BBB, It will be tough to have home field advantage.

  65. Rebecca

Mel–yea, blame Chi Dave. He kind of challenged me..it’s about three days old.

    http://puristbleedspinstripes.blogspot.com

I want to see if I can keep it going for, I dunno, at least a month, before starting to advertise it. I do a lot of things on whims, and half the time they die out…want to make sure this one doesn’t!

  66. raymondmagnetic

Dr. Acula do you remember what happened last time the Angels and Red Sox met in the ALDS? Let’s just say the Yankees would like to forget.

  67. Dr. Acula

If cleveland continues their surge (9-1 in last 10), then they would secure atleast the 2nd seed. The wild card (us) can not face the division winner (boston) in the first round.

therefore, as the wild card(the 4th seed), we would face cleveland and Boston would have to travel to orange county to face the 3rd seed. HA!!

    so lets root for Cleveland.

  68. VOIII

Tigers remind me of the White Sox a couple of years ago. They almost gave the division away to the Indians and stunk it up for a month. They then turn it on the last week in September and win every game October. Just feels that way to me, their pitching is just to good to be this bad. Yanks will need to play like they want it the rest of the way to hold the Tigers off.

  69. EricNS

Cash – A-Rod must not be allowed to leave!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  70. raymondmagnetic

Dr. Acula careful what you wish for Brother. Last time that matchup happened it did not work out in the Yanks favor.

  71. Chicago Dave

I remember what happened the last time the Red Sox met the White Sox in the ALDS…If the White Sox could spank the Sux like they did that year, then I have faith that the Angels could spank the Sux this year!

  72. Dewey

Does anyone remember the comments Gary Sheffield was making during Spring Training about A-Rod? He said he was to have the biggest season of his Yankees career, etc. I hate to say it – but he predicted the future 7 months ago.

    http://tinyurl.com/3drpcu

  73. Dr. Acula

    raymondmagnetic-

I’m thinking of 1997, when as the wild card we beat Cleveland in the first round, while Baltimore had to travel cross country to Seattle. Things worked out well that year.

  74. Chicago Dave

Dr. A – As I remember it, we actually lost to the Indians in ‘97…Remember Alomar’s big HR off Mariano?

  75. Rebecca

    Chi Dave–You remember correctly.

  76. Chicago Dave

Rebecca – Yeah, I thought so!!! (Good to know my memory is still sound. ;) )

  77. raymondmagnetic

Oh yeah, I nearly cried watching that HR off of Mo’ that year. Did anyone think he’d be the greatest ever after that HR? I felt sure he’d end up as a 2 year wonder.

  78. Dr. Acula

    oops ;)

well ya know where I coming from. I’d rather travel the short distance to Cleveland, where we did well last month, and let the halos and boston beat each other up, getting jet lagged in the process.

  79. Chicago Dave

Yes, that HR in ‘97 sure hurt like hell, but the pain was expunged after we won it all again in ‘98. However, I’m still waiting us to win the title again so that the heartache of ‘01 can finally be healed!

  80. Darrin

Yeah, Doc, please stop wishing for the Indians.

First, the Red Sox have no trouble at all with the Angels. Second, last year on this blog we were all congratulating ourselves for the “lucky break” in drawing the Tigers. Third, the fact that we are 6-0 vs Cleveland this year actually worries me (percentages are bound to even out somewhat); and last, if the Yanks have what it takes, they’re going to have to go thru Boston and/or the Angels anyway.

  81. YanksFanLV

I would rather see the Sox in the ALCS than the Angels.

  82. Rebecca

I don’t remember that HR, cos I had a bedtime back then.

One of my parents’ smarter decisions, I think.

  83. Chicago Dave

You know, one of these years we’re going to have to beat the Angels (in the playoffs)…There’s no two ways about it!

  84. raymondmagnetic

I agree Chicago Dave. I think this year could be it. We now have two guys in the bullpen who are tough to score against and Shields is all of a sudden looking very hittable. I like our chances.

  85. Darrin

‘97 really sucked. In fact, the Yankees have never won a postseason series as a wild card. They’ve been the wild card twice and they’ve lost both times in sickening, 5 game heartbreakers.

  86. Chicago Dave

Rebecca – You were indeed a lucky little girl to miss that homer. Your mother made a very wise decision!

Still, I’m sure you sat through the bitter end of Game 7 in ‘01, didn’t you? (If your mom saved you from that then I’m nominating her for sainthood!)

  87. YankeeJosh

In 1997 I was in college watching the game with my non-baseball fan housemates. Tough loss at the time but 1995 hurt a lot worse.

  88. Rebecca

Chi Dave–My parents tried, but I listened to the end of the game on the radio.

I cried for a half hour after the game.

I’m not joking. It was my favorite player on the Yankees blowing the game after games Four and Five had been so magical, it was baseball after 9/11…everyone thought the Yankees were destined to win that year…

    however, I cried.

I didn’t get naseuous and contemplate moving to France (for about five minutes) like I did in 2004!

  89. Chicago Dave

Darrin – Actually, I still have fond memories about ‘95. I still remember staying up for that extra-inning marathon that the Yanks finally won on a Leyritz homer…and getting to watch Mariano’s first great postseason performance in the innings leading up to that homer. Who cares that McDowell blew it in Game 5?!

  90. Darrin

In a way, it may be better to just suck it up and play the Angels in the first round. For one thing, it will be one of the very rare times that the Yankees will actually be the underdogs going into a series. The Angels will have a different pressure than previous playoffs. Besides, the Yankees have been really good on the few occasions that they’ve been the underdog (i.e. Atlanta ‘96, Seattle ‘01)

  91. Dr. Acula

_Red Sox have no trouble at all with the Angels._

not true. The sox lost 2 outta 3 in LA and split a 4 game set at home – all in the month of August.

    YanksFanLV-

you’re on target. I WANT the sux in the ALCS. Gagne will issue some more dividends and we’re 7 and 2 in the last nine.

  92. YankeeJosh

Losing in 2001 was so depressing. I was just dead after the game. It all happened so suddenly and I was stunned.

2004 was the worst though. I was so depressed for months and was having nightmares for a long time.

  93. Chicago Dave

Rebecca – Well said, well said. I think we all cried after that game, that’s for sure! I think I went into full-on depression for many months after that, in fact…

  94. Stuart

Indian are a good team all. they have 2 very good starters, 2 very good relievers(betabcourt and the rookie lety) and there lineup has improved.

Hafner is coming on and there 2B is very good and Gutierrez is now there Rf.

    They are very good team..

where is Gagne?????Does anyone know?Is he hurt?

  95. Rebecca

YankeeJosh: The worst was my roomate that year was a Sux fan!

    Ugh, it was HORRIBLE!

  96. Chicago Dave

Darrin – Yeah, give us the Angels in the first round! We’ll get them this time!!!

  97. Darrin

Why did someone have to bring up the 2001 WS?

To this day I still cannot believe they lost that series. After the extra inning win in game 5, I figured they were a lock.

  98. Stuart

enough with arod and the money he is not getting $35 mill a yr, not happening. If he hit 80 Hr’s it is not happening..

  99. This Year

Rebecca and Chicago Dave, in Torre speak, no question we were all depressed for months in ‘04. Worse for me (and more months) because I live in boston– regretably.

  100. Darrin

Dr. Acula: I’m speaking historically. In the same way the Angels are in our heads, the Red Sox are in the Angels heads.

I would not expect the Angels to beat the Red Sox.

  101. YankeeJosh

    Rebecca,

    My sympathies.

I never felt good about the 2004 series, even up 3-0. The pitching on that Yankees team scared me, and I knew we’d be in big trouble if we didn’t win in game 5.

With all the dynasties success, I wasn’t as depressed at the non-Word Series titles until after 2004. That really got me in desperation mode for number 27 to shut up the Sox fans.

  102. This Year

Yeah, 2001 was the worst roller coaster. I was at the two magical wins in games 4 and 5. Then Andy tipped hi pitches and Mo gives up the lead as often as it rains in AZ. Oh yes it did rain in the 7th, leading to a slipperry ball, leading to a throw into cf, etc. I still have not recovered from that. But I know, optimism.

  103. Chicago Dave

OK, not to get too maudlin here, but, because of 9/11, the loss in the ‘01 WS (and how it happened) will always hurt much more for me than collapsing to the BoSox in ‘04. My dad worked in the World Financial towers right next door to World Trade…He told me stories about papers flying past his office window when the first plane hit, and then watching people jump from the upper floors of the WTC towers once he got outside. Heck, I didn’t even know if he was OK until that afternoon. So, the bottom line is somehow it meant a lot more to me that the Yanks win that year…

Losing to the Sox…Yeah, I was angry at the time…but I’ve gotten over it since then. ‘01 still stays with me.

  104. Darrin

Still got a lot of work to do to even make the postseason this year.

Yanks need to have a great road trip.

  105. YankeeJosh

    Chicago Dave,

If was the opposite to me. I wanted to win in 2001 for 9/11, but at the time, baseball was a more minor concern. The Yanks losing paled in comparison to the tragedy that occurred.

  106. Chicago Dave

Darrin – Agreed. No reason to get too far ahead of ourselves by imagining first round matchups! We’ve got to keep grinding and winning series right now!!

  107. This Year

I’ll never forgive Torre for not pitching Moose on regular rest in game 4 in ‘04 (you know how Moose is about regular rest). He needed to see what he could get from the returning from injury El Duque (i.e., he thought the series was won and he was lining up his WS pitching. THat message got communicated and the team acted as if they never had won. But eough of rear view window stuff, we are 3 up!!

  108. YankeeJosh

I thought El Duque should have pitched game 3 over Brown. Brown had only looked okay in domed climate controlled game. Duque would have gutted a win through game 3 and spared the pen and set Moose up for game 5.

  109. Chicago Dave

YankeeJosh – Of course, you’re right. I knew baseball was totally minor compared to the tragedy, but somehow everything seemed connected going into that World Series. (I’m weird, I know!) Maybe it was the way each of the games played out…The Yanks, seemingly out of it, coming back to magically win those games at the Stadium…seemed to mirror, at least in a small way, the struggle the City was going through in the wake of the disaster…

  110. YankeeJosh

    Chicago Dave,

Oh, I totally understand how you feel. And 2001 did bother me for a bit. However, maybe it was having won 3 in a row before that and everything that happened, 2004 just really depressed me.

  111. Rebecca

Hate to rain on the parade, but can we change the topic? It’s supposed to be a happy night…

  112. Chicago Dave

OK, now I feel bad for bringing everybody down and going on about 9/11. Sorry guys! Time for me to go to bed and let you guys get back to discussing happier stuff again…

Good night, all! See you soon!!

  113. VOIII

The Yankees best path the WS is through Cleveland then Boston. They couldn’t beat the Angels even when the were winning the WS every year. Mike Scosia owns Torre.

  114. Dr. Acula

    _where is Gagne?????Does anyone know?_

    in a “secure undisclosed location”

  115. YanksFanLV

I bought a really cool baseball coffee table book recently. It has a 4 page run down on every year of the entire MLB from the 40’s up until 2006. The first thing I did when I got it…. rip out 2004.

  116. YankeeJosh

Rebecca, how about beating the Mets in 2000? That was such a high. I was interning and the big bosses where I worked were Mets fans. Was so cool having them congratulate me after the Series ended!

  117. Chicago Dave

Sorry, Rebecca, you’re right. Sorry for bringing everybody down! I’ll sign off now and leave you guys to happier thoughts…

See you soon for another Yankee victory! (And, don’t worry, I won’t bring up the 9/11/ ‘01 World Series stuff again, OK?!)

  118. bkight

I think everyone is going crazy throwing #s like $30 million a year around for ARod. Look what Soriano, Zito, Zambrano, Hafner and others have got. No one is even getting $20M a year anymore except Clemens, which was dumb.

I doubt ARod even opts out, unless he really wants to leave NY, because it will cost the Yankees the $21M from Texas. Plus we have to sign Posada and Mo.

  119. Rebecca

YankeeJosh–That was fun! I was a high school freshman, and I taunted my gym teacher!

The second day of gym, or something like that, my gym teacher goes ‘oh, we like the Mets here’, and I, a FRESHMAN, responded, ‘Mets suck Yankees rule!’

Some of the biggest senior guys in the class looked at me and gave me a high five!

unfortunately, that was about the height of my popularity, but it was sooo worth it!

  120. Montana Mike

Anyone have a stat on what the fewest number of hits a team has had and yet scored 10 or more runs? 10 runs for the Yanks tonight on 7 hits — very efficient!

  121. Carmine

2001’s world series was really bad because after Soriano’s homer, you just felt like we had it in hand.

Don’t mean to get political, but I’m not a fan of the guy and the fall of 04 was terrible for me with the ALCS and then the presidential election.

  122. Alan Smith

Dude, You are the one acting like the middle school kid. You are the one trolling on a yankee blog.

  123. A. Phil

    Red Sux retard.

  124. Chris NY

Blank check for A-Rod’s contract extension. Blank check.

  125. VOIII

Redsox fans really know baseball? Hah….Yankee fans watch Picaso paint. sux fans watch their neighbor paint his house…that maybe to deep for you sux fans to get. So I will explain, when you watch a appreciate greatness you might understand a little more than someone who watches and appreciates failure year after year. Define insanity….repeating something exactly the same way over and over but expecting a different result.

I tried to post a link to the dailynews. There is an article on Rocky/scooter/lucky. Whatever you want to name him. Pretty funny. The players have taken notice too.

    Alex = A-Bomb=MVP, Going away.

  130. ...

Anyone see that Hack Wilson was 5ft 6inches tall and was still able to have that season?

  131. YankeesLuv

please don’t forget, 9-11 it was not a tragedy. tragedys happen, 9-11 was a murder. nothing more nothing less. man made, man carried out, with intent. simple murder.

Best Team in BB, reminds me of someone, who most likely still lives at home, in the basement of there mothers house.

Actually, I think we should all start to referring to him as Owen, like Owen from the late 1980’s Through Mama from the Train movie, if some of you aren’t old enough to remember.

So Owen, does your mommy ask you to clean the wax out of her ears? Does she ask you to bengay her back?

I’m sorry if I offend anyone on this blog, but people like Owen need to get a life.

  134. Adam

How many of the people chanting MVP were among the morons booing A-Rod last year?
