Alex Rodriguez and Chien-Ming Wang escaped injury as the Yankees beat the Mariners in a laugher that nearly wasn’t so funny.

Details were few but Roger Clemens says he will pitch again this season. Thanks to Sean Mayer, who was working late and got this on the web when it didn’t make it the first time.

Thanks for the injury updates. When ARod dove for 3rd I had a bad feeling. Then he grabbed his leg and I thought, “Oh, crap.”

  2. John_Halfz

Let’s hope Chien doesn’t miss a start. Wouldn’t want to miss any illuminating comments from the resident pitching coaches on how much he sucks because he’s a one pitch pitcher.

  3. beatcake

I can’t see Wang missing any time, he was stiff from sitting while watching BP.

  4. barnsy

Why wouldn’t Wang be scheduled for Sun?

He doesn’t need a week off and 2 bullpen sessions. This is crunch time here.

  5. iiicollies

Pete! I thought you said you were going to bed!

PETER…can you find out the answer to this question ? I think I know the answer, in that SOMEONE has decided that Moose MUST pitch in Clemens Place and they are IGNORING the fact that with 2 days off coming up, that the next time we need a 5th starter is 9/15 against Boston. I feel strongly that the Yankees are doing a VERY STUPID thing here, which is basically throwing a game away letting Moose pitch again, draining the bullpen that day and throwing ALL the other pitchers’ off normal rest schedules…but, ya know, this is Moose and you MUST let him pitch again, right ?…WRONG, IMO ! 100% WRONG !!!

  8. migames

The answer is pretty easy, the yankees have two days off, thursday and monday….thats why

  9. Jeff NJ

Barnsy, I agree, they need to maximize Wang’s starts, he needs to go Sunday.

  10. Jeff NJ

At this point Wang and Pettitte should be the only ones starting every 5th day, everyone else should get bumped around, even (arguably especially) Mussina.

  11. Bronx

The general thought process is that pitchers should go in order and each get an extra day or two off here and there. For the long haul that may be best, I do not know. But, by pitching Sunday, Wang could have 5 more starts this season instead of 4. It seems like that could be important. It would not set him up well to pitch game 1 of the playoffs, but I would rather see them get in and then worry about that.

The only other reason to hold him back until Tuesday is if they feel that the injury (however slight) that he sustained last night would benefit from the extra couple of days rest. IMO, that would be a legitimate reason to hold him back. It would also be legitimate to hold him back to rest his injury and not admit the reason publicly.

  12. mary ellen

Can someone tell me why a pitcher doesn’t do some kind of stretching while sitting on the bench during a long inning? Is that not allowed?

  13. migames

is it just me or is Jorge Posada having an MVP year? If Arod werent on this team, Posada would be talked about as being the MVP

  14. Don Vito Bellamo

    migames & Bronx,

First off, off days or not, Sunday would be the next day that Wang is scheduled to pitch on regular rest, after pitching Tuesday. 2nd off, Torry said in his post game interview that they had already determined that he was not going to start again until NEXT Tuesday ( before the game, NOT after the injury ) The Yankees have already determined that it is in the best interest of the team ( or actually the Moose ) that Mussina pitch in Clemens “spot” and that pushes Wang AND all the other starters off normal rest. IMO, this is totally stupid to push Wang and the rest of the starters that have recent ERAs under 20 ( I know, I am inflating that for effect ) and to do ALL of this, just so the Moose gets another chance to start…100% totally Asanine, IMO.

  15. DMan77

Lets hope the Yankees bring the same bats to the ball park tonight. Have to beat up Washburn.

  16. Don Vito Bellamo

    Torry = Torre ( derr, silly me ! )

  17. Don Vito Bellamo

Yesterday, I said Yankees 12-2 and we ended up winning 12-3…today I predict Yankees win 9-4 ( place your bets now, place your bets !!! LOL )

  18. beatcake

Jorge is having the season of his career. Is it because of the upcoming contract negotiations? I doubt that. He is a hard worker and is trying to keep the team going.

He is a close second to A-Rod for the MVP of the team, but A-Rod is having a heck of a season too. You can’t ignore the numbers he’s puttin’ up.

  19. rbj

Don, never mind that, what are the powerball numbers.

  20. Don Vito Bellamo

rbj ….now THAT has escaped me for YEARS !!! LOL

  21. Rebecca

    Thanks for the updates.

The Arod moment was really really scary…

  22. Jeff NJ

the only rationale for pitching Wang on Tuesday is so that Moose gets to start against the crappy KC Royals, a team he is 2-0 against this year. I think it is shortsighted though, they need to maximize Wang and Pettitte’s starts. As Joel Sherman wrote “It’s Wang and Pettitte and then forget it.”

  23. DMan77

Yah that moment with A-Rod was scary. I hyper-ventalated a little.

  24. jennifer

I think Phil will have a pretty good game today.

  25. Yanksrule57

Let’s not be so quick to dismiss young Mr. Kennedy.
True, Hughes hasn’t been the same since his injury and Mussina has been abysmal. But I like some things I saw with IPK and I think he might be alright for the rest of the year. We still need Clemens to return this year though since the Yanks wouldn’t consider moving Jaba to the rotation until next spring.
What I’m trying to say is that the team may not be in as bad a shape as some are saying. They have a 2 game lead in the WC and I like their chance to make the playoffs and even the LCS.

  26. SJ44

There is another rationale for not pitching Wang on Sunday.
Perhaps he is hurting. Not just from last night but from overall soreness or an injury they aren’t disclosing.

Its not like they go public with player injury updates. Even when they do, its always secretive and non-specific.

I have a feeling they want to give him extra time to overcome some nagging bumps and bruises. At this time of the year, every pitcher who has had his workload is nursing some kind of injury.

Wouldn’t surprise me if that’s the case with Wang.

  27. No A-rod = YANKS TOAST

Please A-Rod, NO MORE HEADFIRST SLIDES!

He would’ve reached 3B safely on a feet first slide.

  28. Extend Posada

The Yanks should extend Posada for 2 years and $24M ($12M/yr.) a.s.a.p. If he wants $25-30M ($12.5-15M/yr.), give him that. He must be brought back at all costs! If he struggles/ tires a bit in ‘09, Greg Zaun, a free agent after next year, would be a good backup.

I like Molina, but how nice would it be if the Yanks got Minnesota’s Mike Redmond to back up Posada? Too bad Redmond is signed through next year I think.

  29. SJ44

I’d just bring back Molina. He’s better defensively than Zaun (much better handling pitchers) and seems to fit in with the team real well.

Molina is probably the best backup catcher they have had since Posada backed up Girardi. I don’t see the need to go outside for a backup when the guy you have is as good, or better, than anybody else.

Redmond isn’t going anywhere. He’s not only signed through 2008, he may end up catching more games next year if rumors of moving Mauer to third are accurate.

  30. jennifer

Than he would have fallen on ALex’s head.

  31. Don Vito Bellamo

jennifer, but a sprained head is much easier to play on than a sprained ankle ! LOL

  32. Don Vito Bellamo

    SJ44.,,,I respect your opinion,,,but I ain’t buyin’ it…

  33. Rob from Plainview

Wang is a guy who needs regular work. With his sinker ball and his stuff he doesn’t need a week off. Especially with how good he has been lately. I’d much rather Wang be kept on regular rest than be pushed back a week.

  34. jennifer

I don’t know about that. Both are bad. I love how on the radio they say in the updates that he collided with Beltre. Meanwhile ALex slid safely into third and Beltre fell backwards on top of him.

  35. Lanny

Yea, lets worry about who the backup catcher is going to be next season.

Makes sense in Sept in a pennant race.

You do realize the starter isn’t under contract next yr right?

  36. DMan77

    Such a big game tonight!

I’m getting anxious already, and its only 11:30am..

  37. Rebecca

DMan–No worries. As long as we keep the optimism up and the squirrel returns, we won’t lose another game!

  38. Ellen

    Gotta love that squirrel!!

  39. Andrea

I’m gonna be at the game today. I hope the squirrel is there!

  40. Don Vito Bellamo

OPTIMISM RULES !!!…here is something Positive to Root for…Cleveland is now only 2 games back of LAA….When Cleveland overtakes LAA, they will then be the #2 seed in the playoffs ( I have to assume that the Yankees will not catch Boston for the division and will be the Wild Card…as MUCH as it PAINS me to do so… )….Then Boston will be the #1 Seed and Can NOT play us in the first round…So then it will be US against Cleveland….SWEET…then LAA vs Boston….Setting up the Yankees vs Boston LCS where we KICK THEIR BUTTS !….Another scenario is where LAA AND Boston both stumble across the finish line ( I know, I am smoking bananas now ) and Cleveland finishes as the #1 seed…that works too…as the NYY vs. CLE and LAA vs. BOS lines up that way too !! Just some POSITIVE food for thought….and to repeat….YANKEES WIN 9-4 TONIGHT !!!…..Wa-HOOOO !!!

  41. Rebecca

Don Vito–I was going to ask if you were going to call it ;)

    What’s A-Rod doing tonight?

  42. Jeff NJ

Don, now that is encouraging. I hadn’t realized Cle was that close to Ana. No Yankee fan wants to see Anaheim in round one, cleveland would be awesome. I got my tickets invoice last night for the playoffs, I get home game two which is game four, Monday Oct 8th. It woudl be so sweet if first of all we make it, then second of get to play a team we haven’t lost to this year.

  43. hmmm

i love how everyone just assumes they have 100% of the information the yankees have.

do you guys really think that the Yankees are not aware that Wang is their best pitcher and should pitch as much as possible?

is it POSSIBLE that there is a perfectly valid reason for letting him rest that MAYBE we aren’t privvy to?

  44. Don Vito Bellamo

    Rebecca, A-Rod will go 3 for 5 with a Home Run and 4 RBIS….

Jeff NJ, so we just scoreboard watch every game and see Cleveland tear it up these last 3 weeks !!!

Also, I just noticed that ESPN Yankees’ Schedule has Wang starting on Sunday ( I TOTALLY KNOW that they are often wrong…but you can’t blame a guy for dreamin’ !!! )

  45. Don Vito Bellamo

hmmm,,,,,I totally do NOT assume that I have 100% of that information….and without it, I want Wang pitching on Sunday, that’s all…How about you ? IF there is NO OTHER REASON, other than to give Moose a chance to show he can still pitch, would you want Wang NOT on the mound instead ???

  46. Rebecca

    Don–We can wish, can’t we?

  47. DMan77

    Don Vito,

Heres a tricky one to call

Who starts at first base tonight for the Yankees?

And who finishs the game at first base?

  48. Andy

Be careful what you wish for.

There might be a reason Cleveland finishes with a better record than LA.

And aren’t we due vs LA?

  49. E-ROC

We shouldn’t concern ourselves about when Wang pitches again or he might not be pitching Sunday. There are other starters not named Pettitte and IPK who aren’t performing. Hopefully, Hughes will bounce back with the help of the pitching coaches of Double A and Triple A. Ummm…what does that say about Guidry? Just thought I’d ask.

The dreaded Mussina will be given a chance to pitch again. YIKES!

  50. Don Vito Bellamo

    Rebecca….YES, we CAN !

Also, more Positivity….Yankees have won 5 of their last 8 games and after tonight that will be 6 out of their last 9 games, with Boston and Seattle being 2 of the 3 teams that we faced during that stretch ( the other team, we won’t talk about…. )…
…after this, we go to KC and TOR and get out our brooms for both of those series ( Oh, and we let Farnsy Plunk Stairs right in the ribs the first chance he gets ! )….
so TONIGHT here is what we need ( and WILL GET ) Yankees pound Seattle, CLE over MIN, TOR over BOS and OAK over LAA….and that’s ALL we need ! LOL

  51. Don Vito Bellamo

Giambi starts at first and Minky finishes as we will have a nice comfortable lead late in the game…..

  52. Don Vito Bellamo

oh, and you are OUT of your mind to think that we match up better against LAA than CLE…..Plain and simple, we find ways to LOSE against the Angels and completely SMOKE the Indians ( no pun intended )….and those are FACTS !

  53. DMan77

LAA runs all over us. They steal, bunt, play hit and run, tag up, go first to third..

The Yankees can’t seem to figure out how to stop that.

  54. Andrew

    Don Vito,

We completely smoked the Tigers last year too, remember how everyone was ecstatic that the Twins overtook them so we wouldn’t have to face Santana?

It could be the same thing this season. Frankly, I think it will be the Angels in the ALDS, and then Cleveland in the ALCS. That’s right, Boston loses in the first round and the Yankees move to the ALCS…thereby having a better season than Boston yet again!

  55. Don Vito Bellamo

after tonight…Yankees CATCH FIRE for last 22 games, going 18-4 and finishing the season at 96-66 ( is it Wrong to drink Beer for breakfast ? )

  56. Pepper Brooks

Interesting article on Wang and baseball in Taiwan..

Article disputes Wang’s true value because he pitches for the Yankees and gets an average of 7 runs a game.

    Enjoy the read.

  62. Joe

    Pepper,

Thanks for posting the article it was interesting. There were some valid points, however, the writer states the following.

“Every time Wang takes the hill the Yanks spot him 7 runs and never make any errors”.

Does the writer actually believe the run support and the better defense has nothing to do with Wang?

  63. S.o.S.27

Lets hope the pitching coach that was brought up for Kennedy will make the difference for Hughes. They say that they found a flaw in his delivery. He was dipping his shoulder and was rushing his pitches. We need the rookies for this stretch run.

As far as who to play in the playoffs. I want the teams that took us out of the playoffs in the resent past. Give me angels and red sox. Cleveland has been playing good ball as of late. They have two aces and Hafner seems to be waking up. As someone else stated we dominated the tigers in the regular season and lost when it counted. I still think that the angels are not what they once were. We can beat Lackey and Escobar. Their bullpen is hurting now that Shields has hit a wall and has been demoted to mop up duties. K-rod a 4 walks an inning waiting to happen.

We will be dangerous no matter who we play…

  64. Andrea

I think when it comes to LAA, it doesn’t matter what their record is–they just have the Yankees’ number. They really aren’t a better team than Boston, it seems, yet we find a way to beat Boston and can’t seem to find a way to beat the Angels.

    Go figure.

I’d feel better v. Cleveland in the playoffs than LAA.

Who pitches game 1 Pettite or Wang.
I for one go with Wang.

Does anyone else think we should go with a 3 man rotation in the first round. I know its short rest, but I would prefer Andy or Chein on short rest than Mussina on full.

  70. Don Vito Bellamo

S.o.S.27 …..100% Agree, 3 man rotation for ALL of the Playoffs !!!

  71. S.o.S.27

Has anyone noticed that when Wangs strikouts are down in a game, he seems to have better stuff. I know last year alot of writers were saying that he cant be as succesful as other top notch aces until his strikouts go up. He seems to do better when there is contact. His last two starts he has looked like the Wang of old. Getting the ground out rather than the strike out seems to do the trick.

Some have speculated [with fuel to the fire being the presence of additional pitching coaches] that perhaps Gator will not return next year. The way I see it, will all of our pitching woes, we need all the gurus we can get. Wish we could get Mel Stottlemyre back to help out, too.

  75. raymagnetic

Wang is truly one of the most underrated pitchers in the game this year. In 17 of Wang’s 26 starts he’s given up 3 runs or less. Is that not good enough for 17 wins? For that author to suggest that Wang’s run support is totally the reason for his 17 wins is foolish on his part.

    SJ 44

The Yanks should definitely bring Molina back for next year.
I was thinking about Zaun as an option for 2009 only (too bad he’s signed through next year along with Redmond) and only if Molina “Nievesucks” next year. Ah in fairness to Nieves if the guy could hit .220-.230, he’d be a serviceable backup catcher in the N.L. I don’t know -Halladay, Marcum, and Burnett are having pretty good years (well not Burnett so much cuz the guy can never play healthy for a full year), Toronto’s over .500. Zaun’s acceptable. I think of Zaun as more of a 5-10 HR with adequate defense backup kind of guy. Also if Posada was out for 2 months, I’d rather have Zaun’s bat than Molina’s. If Molina is good next year, I’d bring him back for ‘09. Like any catcher, the key is health and strength in the legs, hopefully Molina, Zaun, and Redmond, or any 2 of the 3 can still play in ‘09 so the Yanks have options. Posada is strong as an ox so he doesn’t concern me much for ‘09 although I guess you never know. I’m glad the Yanks got a guy who could start for a month if Posada ever fell to injury (Molina). He’s a bit on the heavy side like his brother Benji which concerns me, but like his bro, he gets the job done.

Mauer might be moving to 3B? Hmmmm…if he is and he’s Minny’s 3B next year, I wouldn’t mind him at 3B whenever his contract is up, I know it’s a way’s off. If/ when the Yanks keep A-Rod, they could move A-Rod to 1B or LF to make room for Mauer at 3B.

I think the Yanks should move Jeter from SS after next year because he is nowhere close to being a Gold Glove caliber SS this year. Jeter in LF, Matsui to DH, Mark Texiera 1B in ‘09. It’s too bad the only shortstops worth anything on the free agent market after next year are Orlando Cabrera and Edgar Renteria, but they’re about as old as Jeter and not as good as Jeter offensively. A-Rod would be too old to go back to SS. They should’ve moved Jeter to 3B when A-Rod came. What was Jeter gonna do, refuse to move, relent but halfass it at 3B, and demand a trade? Jeter’s been a Gold Glove SS by default: Vizquel went to the A.L. then A-Rod moved to 3B. If Jeter wins another G.G., the award is a joke cuz Jeter is
    lousy there now.

  79. Andrea

  82. Extend Posada

    Let’s have some fun:

    2011 Yankees:

    C-???

    1B-Mark Texiera (signed for 2009-14/15)

2B-Cano (seventh year as the Yanks 2B -will he be a 20+ HR, 100+ RBI then?)

3B-Joe Mauer (free agent after 2010)

SS-???/ Whoever the hell is Gold Glove caliber now who might be available then.

LF-Jeter (contract is up after 2010, but he re-signs of course).

CF-Melky (sixth year as the Yanks CF -who bats leadoff him or Mauer?)

RF-A-Rod (first year of his extension through 2013)

    DH-???

  83. Andrea

Beckett DOES have a potty mouth!

  84. S.o.S.27

Dont we have a couple of solid short stops in our minor leagues? After watching battencourt these last couple of games take hits away from us. It makes me think that maybe Jeter should go to first on 09 rather than the outfield where he has less of a chance to get hurt.If Nomar switched to first and did good, I know Jeter would do great. But then again I also think Posada should go there after seeing his throwing out baserunners decline this year vs. last.
One thing is for sure we need to start looking for the next s.s. in house or out for the near future.

  85. Beckett has a potty mouth

By 2011 we should also have Johan Santana and maybe Erik Bedard (you know, just in case someone goes Pavano on us).

I clicked onto Verducci’s si.com article about protecting young pitchers. There’s the picture of Clay pointing at the sky (sans laptops) and the funniest thing happened. There was a Circuit City popup window and guess what came swooping across the article right past his finger? Yup, a laptop. It was priceless.

Anyway, good article. Joba, Kennedy, and Hughes are also mentioned.

    Pepper,

Thanks for posting the article it was interesting. There were some valid points, however, the writer states the following.

“Every time Wang takes the hill the Yanks spot him 7 runs and never make any errors.

Does the writer actually believe the run support and the better defense has nothing to do with Wang?

I thought the stats were interesting but I am a believer that if you have a pitcher who is doing his job - throwing strikes - the performance of the fielders will always be better. That is the problem with Mussina, he dances around to much with his pitches and doesn’t keep his fielders on their toes. With Wang, as the saying goes, “he is always one pitch away from a double-play.”

I would like to see the writers take on Dice-K who gets very little run support and has a record closer to .500.

  90. Andrea

I don’t think anyone else has the balls (or lack thereof) to ever go Pavano again.

  91. mel

Eric Kasilias (sp?) was saying that Kennedy was getting married in the middle of the playoffs and how that was going to work out. “Sorry, honey, can’t make the wedding”.

I bet Ian’s fiance will be happy to have Kennedy as her last name. She won’t have to spell it out for people like she probably has to with her maiden name.

A-Rod in the outfield? Nice try but it will never happen. A-Rod’s the first to admit that pop-ups are the worst part of his game. The only way he could be an outfielder is if the whole pitching staff are sinker ball pitchers.

Would you tell us why not let Wang start on Sunday, Please

2 bullpen and 6 offday is too long for a sinkerball pitcher!

Can someone who follows minor league baseball reassure me that Phil Hughes, ultimately, will evolve into Clay Buchholz’s equal or better yet, excel him?

IF the Yankees drafted Hughes in ‘04, I wonder why, over three years, he hasn’t developed the array of pitches Bucholz now can command? Is it just the disparity in their ages?

Did the Yankees wait to teach Hughes a third pitch, other than his fastball and curveball. Or has he just been slow to develop and perfect his change-up and/or slider?

I was at Friday’s game, watched Hughes’ delivery very closely, and monitored the board that identifies the pitch he has thrown. I can’t recall him throwing more than two or three change-ups or more than 3 or 4 sliders. Perhaps, he did and I missed it. Or the operator mistook one pitch for another. Still, the question is can Hughes be effective with just his fastball and his curve? I’m dubious.

Let’s hope the flaw Eiland recently spotted and fixed in his mechanics (see today’s NYP) will improve his efficacy.

The Yankees need a quality start from him tonight. Washburn hasn’t pitched well lately but I’ve seen him stymie the Yankees too many times to be confident that the bats can overcome another middling pitching performance.

I’m holding my breath for “the kid” tonight. For all you joining me in the stands tonight, let’s show him a lot of love. Perhaps, we can bolster his confidence and abet an outing to match his start in Cleveland.

  97. Andrea

Kill Schil: I’ll be there, showing my love for Hughes, praying for a Joba appearance cause I haven’t seen him yet :(

  98. Kill-Schill(ing)

    Dear Mr. Kuang-

Wang isn’t starting Sunday so the Yankees can pitch him against BOTH Toronto (a much tougher opponent than KC) and Boston. Toronto, on Tuesday. Boston on Sunday.

    Sincerely,
    Kill the Schill

  99. Bronx Dave

    Hey D Train.

Josh Beckett is not married. Was that an attempt at a joke?

  100. Lanny

I love the lets figure out the team 5 years from now.

    That always works out.

Who in March would have thought Melky would be starting in CF, Joba would be the 8th inning guy and Wilson Betemit would be playing 1b?

5 years down the line makes sense.

    LOL.

  101. Chicago Dave

Kill-Schill - I don’t think we’re seeing the “real” Hughes right now, and we probably won’t see him back to his real self until next year, honestly. After all, he had some pretty severe injuries, and I think it’s clear he’s still feeling the after-effects of those injuries (both mentally and physically). So, it’s not surprising that you’re not seeing the greatest “stuff” from him now.

  102. Don Vito Bellamo

total joke, Dave….no woman would marry that @-Hole !

  103. populoso

So what the hell is wrong with Tim Hudson?

  104. Chicago Dave

D-Train, Bronx Dave - Well, if she’s not married to Beckett then I’ll gladly take her! She’s a good-looking girl!! ;)

  105. Bronx Dave

How about some real fun. Let’s guess the 2013 lineup!!

  106. Andrea

I’ll be on the 2013 line up.

  107. Chicago Dave

Andrea - What position will you play?

  108. sunny615

I guess we should thank Guidry for fixing Wangs delivery. Hopefully Eiland did the same for Hughes. If that’s the case and all three rookies make the team next year - Eiland should stay as special adivsor to Guidry next season.

Tyler Kepner has a cool mulitmedia show on how to pitch based on Moose’s (and now Ian Kennedy’s) style

    bullpen catcher ;)

    Bronx Dave –

Actually, if I remember correctly, Pete did some forecasting of future teams way back in spring training or thereabouts. I don’t recall if he did just pitching or the whole lineup, though. I had printed it out, but tossed it subsequently, I think, since I can’t find it.

“Jenny,,,I don’t need to hold my *breath& ,,,we WILL take down the Red Sox…What another nice feather in our cap will it be to stroll outta Fenway with another SWEEP TOO !!!”

Don do you really think the Yankees are going to walk all over the Red Sox in the playoffs? You talk like they aren’t even a threat and that is just stupid. the Red Sox have one less win playing against the Yankees this season, they have been in first place for the majority of this season and you have only managed to sweep us once this year. I hope other Yankees fans are smarter than that.

  113. Doreen

He went several years down the road, too.

    Absolutely fantastic article sunny, thanks.

RobM…check out the last 2 months of baseball and get back to me on that…The Yankees NOW are a much better team than in the first 2 months of the season and you can NOT say that about the Red Sox…What is our record against the Red Sox the last 2 times we played them ? ( Hmmm…Try 5-1 and averaging almost 6 runs scored in EACH of those games ) We have had NO PROBLEM hitting their pitching and we look to have Pettitte, Clemens and Wang on the rubber for us. Boston is limping to the finish line and showed NO HEART getting swept in Yankee Stadium….tell me again how great Boston is AFTER we walk out of Fenway with another sweep. Boston played out of their minds for the 1st 2 months of the season and that is what is barely keeping them holding on to the best record in the AL….LAA and Cleveland have great shots at finishing with a better record than the BoSox.,,,,and the Yankees are not dead yet !

  117. saucy

    yeah sunny, thanks for link.

Doreen, I think I remember that mixed in with all of the season preview articles he linked. 2011 i think and Santanna was listed in the rotation.

RobM…check out the last 2 months of baseball and get back to me on that…

Don Vito, let’s look at the last 2 months as you say. Implied in your comment is that the Yankees have played much better than the Red Sox since the All Star break (roughly two months ago, July 9-11). You also explicitly say “Boston is limping to the finish line”. Here are the numbers since the break:

    Yankees 34 - 19
    Red Sox 31 - 21

If the season had started at the all star break, then the Yanks would have a 2.5 game lead on the Red Sox. As we all know, the season starts in April so they don’t lead the AL east. They are actually 7 games back.

My point is, the Yankees have cooled off from the .750 winning % that got them back in the race. They are going to win the wild card in my opinion, and are definitely a scary playoff team. But look at the AL… what playoff team isn’t scary?

The Yanks, Red Sox, Indians and Angels all have good starters at the top of their rotations, all have solid bullpens or better and all have good lineups or better.

The discussions on this blog are good for the most part and I enjoy reading them. I dislike seeing the posts that say the Sox suck or the Yankees suck b/c it just isn’t true. Both teams are fine teams and both will make the playoffs. The biggest series between these two teams will likely happen in October.

This is my first post, so go easy on me. ;)

    cheers

By the way, I vote for registration and the banning of IPs. It is unfortunate that a few idiot Red Sox/Yankees fans give the vast majority of reasonable fans a bad name with stupid posts that serve no purpose other than to provoke a fight or a name-calling contest.

  121. Don Vito Bellamo

Go back to a better Sample…since the Yankees played an awful start and the BoSox got out to a crazy start…On May 29th…Boston at 36-15, Yankees at 21-29 14.5 games back….Since then, Yankees are 56-33 ( .629 ) and Boston is only 48-10 ( .545 ) including the Yankees taking 5 out of the last 6 from Boston….Granted making up the last 7 games of this 14.5 game hole is gonna be darn near impossible….IF the Yankees sweep out Boston, that takes care of 3 of those games, and we can get the other 4 !

  122. sunny615

my pleasure - maybe Moose should listen to it again…

  123. Don Vito Bellamo

    Boston is 48-40 ( sorry )

    Don Vito,

Now you’re selecting a sample of games that are months in the past but only the sample that supports your argument. Unfortunately, the games in April matter as much as the games in May and August etc when determining who gets to play in October and who does not.

“IF the Yankees sweep out Boston, that takes care of 3 of those games, and we can get the other 4!”

I admire your loyalty to your team, but the division race is all but over. I made the effort to reply to your post b/c it is just flat wrong to say the Red Sox haven’t played well since the All Star break (the series in NY aside, by the way). I know you can’t do it, but if you take out three Eric Gagne meltdowns in the 8th or 9th innings in one week then these two teams have identical records in the second half. This is NOT an excuse. It is offered to directly contradict your statement that the Sox as a team are fading.

About that sweep last week… the Yankees and Red Sox have yet to play well against each other at the same time. NY played terribly in the first 6-8 games of the series (and still stole a game or two) and the Red Sox hit .146 avg in the sweep in NYC last week. I know people on this board will want to attribute that to the starts by Clemens and CMW, but that is only part of the story. The Sox main weakness is that their lineup can go through droughts at times. The Yankees’ weak point (IMO) is their pitching (starting and bullpen) has been as inconsistent as the Sox lineup. I digress…

For evidence of my claim that these two teams haven’t played well against each other yet, look at the season series between the two. It has gone 5-1 in one direction and then 7-2 in the other direction. I hope the series in Boston Sept 14-16 features two teams playing well b/c it has yet to happen.
