Alex Rodriguez talked his way into the lineup then hit two homers as the Yankees beat the Mariners. The Yankees had a 6-3 homestand, believe it or not. Mike Dougherty has the story.

Phil Hughes came through, even if he didn’t get the win. This notebook also has updates on Roger Clemens and Chien-Ming Wang.

    ps Go Venus, GO!!

Phil got a big weight off his back with that performance yesterday. After, he spotted them the two runs,he settled down, pitching like the guy we remembered before his injury.Great job. Maybe now that the boys from SWB are here
they are are feeding off one another for motivation.

Ilove this mixture of veterans and “baby bombers.”

  5. Catya

What a good back up Molina is for jorge too.He calls a good game. Great pick up by Cashman.

Good win last night – and A-Rod, who else is the MVP this year, that’s what I want to know?! He’s been amazing. Imagine what his stats would be if he didn’t have a couple of mini slumps – Wow! A day off today should provide everyone some much needed rest. KC will be a little challenging and that’s a good thing – keep everybody playing at a high level and stay sharp for the upcoming Jays & Sox series. GO YANKS!

  7. Keith

    Things on the upside:

    1. Phil Hughes has made the correct adjustments
    2. Joba continues his mastery out of the bullpen
    3. Jose Molina was a valuable pickup as Jorge’s backup
    4. A less pressurized flight to K.C. to have a day off
    and not suffer a letdown

  8. Annie Savoy

I’ll be glad when the season is over and Alex goes somewhere else with all his personal records and achievements. He is not now and never will be a Yankee, nor will Giambi, Damon, Abreu or any of the others who just signed for the money. They have jinxed the team for years now.

  9. E-ROC

Jose Molina can call a good game and do some things with the bat.

  10. Dr. Acula

something tells me Annie Savoy has a crush on ARod.

yeah, yeah, I recognize all the signs.

  11. E-ROC

I noticed that too, Dr Acula

I hope last night, Phil finnaly said to himself ‘Ok fine, ill trust my stuff and just go after the hitters like my coaches have been telling me’..

So now he sees it works and will keep trusting his stuff..

It’s actually good in the long run that he struggled a bit.. No great pitcher can be great without knowing what its like to struggle..

  13. Dr. Acula

    Hi E-ROC!

    how’s da wife?

    when ya comin’ home?

  14. E-ROC

My wife’s fine and we just returned to Turkey a day ago from a funeral in the States. My wife’s grandpa passed.

We’ll return to the States in March. We’ll probably end up in Colorado, Kansas, Georgia, or Florida.

  15. Mark

I wonder if A-Rod is a true Yankee yet????

The fans that boo’d last year should be ashamed.

  16. E-ROC

Mike Gillespie is a man often left out of the equation when giving credit to those responsible for helping the Bombers replenish their farm system.

I hope we get the WC this year and Cleveland overtakes the Angles. I would love to not have to see the Angles in round one and being 6-0 against Cleveland this year sounds good to me. Cleveland LA tonight should be a good series!

Go Yankees and Cleveland(this LA series only)!

Some Interesting Stats I was looking at from ESPN data:
    (Hope it posts legible)

    Maybe this will work?

We like Arod. His problem last year was this new disease that’s gripping baseball called “CAN’T Hit itis.” Their are no known sypmtoms. IT, can effect one or more players at a time even multiple times a season.Whole teams have suffered from it, at a time.there is no known cure. there is a remedy that’s workin quite well.(surprisingly)

    1)vigorous batting practice (voids,double plays,force outs,and called strikes)

2)eye exam (can you SEE the ball)

    3leaving egos in the dugout

4)no all night partying,or strip clubs

While doctors are hopeful,it’s not a cure.

  21. Leonardo

    1) Gil Meche: 7-12 w/ a 3.85 ERA (last start 7.0IP 7H 3ER)
    2) Brian Bannister: 12-7 w/ a 3.16 ERA (last start 8.0IP 6H 1 ER)
    3) Zach Greinke 6-5 w/ a 3.87 (last start 5.0IP 5H 0ER)

Those are the numbers for the 3 starters the Yankees against the Royals. All with ERAs under 4 in the American League, that ’s not bad at all. Especially when you consider that the only two Yankee starters that can boast the same are Pettitte and Wang (Kennedy too but he’s only had 1 start). Anyways thankfully they’re all right handed, and they still play for the Royals. Man a sweep would be sweet, but 2 out of 3 would be another big step toward the playoffs.

  22. Leonardo

I think that everyone just needs to accept the fact that A-Rod is one of the greatest players to ever play the game of Baseball. These discussions about true Yankee or not, are stupid. Major League Baseball is the most fickle of sports, a player is considered successful when he comes through 30 percent of the time. Jaba Chamberlain said it best yesterday when asked about not allowing any runs yet this year: “the game is set up for you to fail.”

A-Rod had a “bad year” last year that anyone would have taken. Look we all know the numbers so I won’t spit them out again. The more prevalent “disease” might be “can’t hit in the playoffs-itis” and lets face it he wasn’t the only one with a serious case last year.

  23. RJPinstripes

Huge win for us last night. If you saw the final score, and not the game, you don’t realize how tight a game it was! But Hughes and esp. A-Rod were huge for us in a game we had to have!!! What an eighth inning !

  24. Al

    Hey Annie…

You do realize that Ruth came to the Yankees for money?

That Reggie came to the Yankees for money?

Clemens, Boggs, Henderson, Maris, Key, Wells, Cone, Nettles, Rivers, Piniella, Hunter, Lyle, Gossage, O’Neil, Martinez, Hayes, Strawberry, Duncan, Raines, Fielder, Girardi, Gooden, Wetteland, Knoblauch, Brosius, El Duque, Davis, Nelson, Stanton… they all came to the Yankees for money.

An awful lot of them got rings as Yankees. After coming to the Yankees for money.

  25. saucy

don’t bother responding to ‘Annie Savoy’

she’s notorious for making assinine, drive-by, posts here and never sticking around to back anything she says up.

    she’ll never read the responses.

  26. The Doomer

Ruth didn’t go to the Yankees for money. he was sold off to finance a Broadway show…..you dummy!

Yeah a sweep would be nice this weekend….a KC sweep’in over the Yankees sweep that is!

  27. VOIII

    Annie is “Best Team’s” Mother…..

  28. Ellen

Beautiful win last night. Great effort from Hughes, A-Rod being A-Rod, Joba getting it done . . . lots of good highlights to remember on the off-day.

  29. Bronx Dave

By the way. Can someone tell me what a “true Yankee” is???

  30. MGW

Actually, Dave, no one can. You can talk about it, but if you can define it, it’s not “True Yankee”. Sorta like love in that sense. When one is a True Yankee, everyone knows it. DiMag, Mantle, Murcer, those were True Yankees. Billy Martin, Thurman Munson, Phil Rizzuto, Whitey Ford, True Yankees all. Jetes, Mo, Posada, Andy, all True Yankees. I say Alex is a true Yankee – he voluntarily gave up his position to Jeter when he came over. He talked his way into the lineup last night and on a gimpy ankle blasted two outta the yard. He wants to succeed in NYC, wants to be a legend. True Yankee.
Ed Whitson, Carl Pavano, NOT True Yankees.

No one knows precisely how the kneading of flesh quells the stress response, but the effects can be dramatic. ,
