Finally, a use for Carl Pavano

Peter Abraham
September
7

I should have done this before. But spurred on by many e-mails and seeing that Amalie Benjamin educated her readers over on Boston.com, here is the deal on postseason eligibility:

The 25 players on the roster as of midnight on Aug. 31 are eligible along with any players who were on the 15-day or 60-day disabled list.

As of that date, the Yankees had five players on the disabled list. Doug Mientkiewicz, Carl Pavano, Humberto Sanchez and Jose Veras were on the 60 and Ron Villone was on the 15.

So the Yankees have a 30-player pool they can choose from for the postseason. But they can replace Pavano or Sanchez (who are still on the DL) with any player who was in their organization as of Aug. 31.

That means Ian Kennedy, if they want.

Hope that answers your questions.

  1. J-Dawg

That will work out perfectly for the Yankees by replacing Pavano with Kennedy. I knew that Carl Pavano would be useful for something!

  2. Don Vito Bellamo

    then, IPK it is !!!!

  3. Don Vito Bellamo

Pete,,, I was totally expecting that you were going to say that Pavano would be the new Bat Girl.

  4. Rebecca

    Hah! Pavano doing some good!

    Who wudda thunk it?

  5. ROY

Isn’t Pavano Italian for “lazy fragile baseball player.”

    I think it’s Sicilian.

  6. Matt

wow… thank you carl pavano, that may have possibly been your biggest contribution to this team

  7. J-Dawg

The day that Carl Pavano’s contract expires should be considered a national holiday. The Yankees can hold a ticker tape parade. I saw Pete’s headline about a use for Pavano and I thought that Pavano had been named as a personal chaffeur for the Red Sox players and coaches!

  8. The D train

Carl Pavano ? Yeah, he’s still standing in front of construction trailer # 5 at the new Stadium site waiting for his teammates to show up for the 2007 team photo shoot.

  9. Larry

Will that clown finally be off the books after this season? Jesus I am tired of hearing his name.

Why don’t they just release him?

  10. Rebecca

    Carl Pavano: The anti-Shelley.

  11. E-ROC

I hope it’s IPK, but for some dumb reason, it might Villone or Douggie. Yes, I’m crazy for saying, but I think that’s going to happen.

  12. John_Halfz

Can’t release a player on the DL.

  13. LATE REPORT

Pavano will be wearing dark rimmed glasses next year and working out of phone booths. Will answer to the name “Clark”.

  14. Brian - So Cal Yankee Fan

    Peter:

Thanks for clearing up that roster question. I was wondering why they brought up IPK on Sept 1 rather than Aug 31.

Look forward to IPK pitching tonight.

  15. Andrew

That’s great. So IPK’s major league clock doesn’t start till next year, and he still gets to pitch in the playoffs.

  16. Bronx Dave

That also means the Sox can add Buchholz and Ellsbury.

  17. neil

    Pavano spot goes to IPK
    Veras’s spot goes to Gardner?

    My Potential Playoff Roster:
    SP Wang
    SP Pettite
    SP Clemens/King Phillip/IPK/Mussina
    SP Clemens/King Phillip/IPK/Mussina

    CP Rivera
    SU Joba
    SU Viz
    MRP Edwar/Farnsworth/Henn/Britton/Villone/Bruney/Igawa/ben
    MRP Edwar/Farnsworth/Henn/Britton/Villone/Bruney/Igawa/Ben
    MRP Edwar/Farnsworth/Henn/Britton/Villone/Bruney/Igawa/Ben
    LRP Clemens/King Phillip/IPK/Mussina

2 of Clemens/King Phillip/IPK/Mussina would be in the rotation, 1 of them in the bullpen, the other not on the playoff roster.

3 of Edwar/Farnsworth/Henn/Britton/Villone/Bruney/Igawa/Ben would be the bullpen. Hopefully atleast 1 of them will be a lefty, but if all 4 lefties do bad between now and the end of the seaon they could have an all right pen.

    Lineup:
    LF Damon
    SS Jeter
    RF Abreu
    3B MVP
    DH matsui
    -C Posada
    1B Giambi
    2B Cano
    CF Melky

    Bench:
    Molina
    Betimet
    Mienky
    Duncan
    Gardner

  18. Murray

Pavano — the worst Yankee FA signing ever? Or would it be Eddie Whitson?

  19. Rebecca

I love how this blog has gone from *if* we make the playoffs to *when* we make the playoffs.

    Love the optimism!

  20. neil

The ‘ben’ in there is Ben Kozlowski. He’s not on the 40 man. but if they DFA someone like Veras. They call call him up, and if he impresses, and IPK doesn’t they they COULD add him instead of IPK

  21. Wolf In Pinstripes

Anybody else find it creepy that there are advertisement banners for Boston fan sites on here? LOL! I know it’s due to the Google Ads, but I still find it to be hilarious.

From Keith Law – curious what you guys think:

Phil Hughes’ stat line from Wednesday night’s start would appear to indicate that he’s back to his pre-injury levels, but the view from behind the plate says that he’s got a ways to go. He’s working as a finesse pitcher, which isn’t his game and for which he doesn’t have the command or the feel.

Before he pulled a hamstring back in May, Hughes would typically work at 90-94 mph with an above-average curveball with a sharp downward break. Wednesday night, however, his stuff was average at best. His fastball was 88-93, mostly 89-91, and it only had some life when he threw it up in the zone. He threw two breaking balls — a soft, slow-roller curveball in the low 70s, and a shorter slider around 80 mph that he worked to bury down in the zone or below it — and flashed a changeup, but none of those pitches were plus, and the curveball was absolutely below-average.

Unfortunately, Hughes doesn’t seem to have the feel for pitching to alter his approach to match his diminished stuff, although it would be unusual for a pitcher his age to have that. He spent much of the night aiming his fastball at the corners of the strike zone, missing more often than not, and he kept popping his curveball rather than junking it in favor of the slider, which was the better pitch on this particular night.

  24. ROY

you are the only creep in here Wolf.

  25. CountryClub

I wouldnt be so sure that IPK makes the playoff roster. He’s already gone over last years innings total by 40 innings. If he pitches 3 or 4 more times this year he could add another 20 to that number. I’m not sure they would risk his future to have him in the bullpen.

  26. mel

    Nate C.

Saw that and was a little peeved, but he is a scout with experience in the mlb so I would defer to his opinion. We all know that Hughes is not right, but hope springs eternal here. The experts still project him to be a solid #2. That’s better than what the Yankees trotted out earlier this year. An injured power pitcher going through the very difficult transition to the majors and is holding down the #4 slot on the NY Yankees? Can we all say “learning opportunity?”

  27. ROY

Keith Law…did he write this after he put his chowder down and stopped writing his “Bucholtz-The Most Wicked Pitcher Evah” biography?

There are grains of truth here and there but he should largely be ignored unless you want to know what brand of underoos Big Poppi wears.

If he really knew so much he would be working for a club.

  28. Bobcat

A repeat from the previous thread:

When trying to extract a “trend for prediction purposes from the YTD results of this season, I would tend to rely on the data from 7/2/07 forward (the beginning of the home series vs. the Twins). Since that time, the Yankees are 26-11 at home and 14-10 on the road (combined 40-21).

Given those results, and realizing they are playing some teams that have given them difficulty in the past, I would still tend to be optimistic when projecting upcoming results.

During the period from 7/2/07 forward, the Yankees’ results vs. the teams they still have on their schedule is as follows:

    vs. KC … 6-1 (3 games remaining)
    vs. Tor .. 5-2 (7 games remaining)
    vs. Bos .. 5-1 (3 games remaining)
    vs. Bal .. 3-3 (6 games remaining)
    vs. TB … 7-4 (3 games remaining)

    Total .. 26-11 (22 games remaining)

It is not inconceivable that the Yankees record over the remaining games will be 15-7 or 16-6. That is based on predicting individual game results, given the specific pitching matchups.

I created an excel table that lays out the game schedule and predicted pitching matchups over the rest of the season. I’ll try to post it here in a later post if anyone is interested.

  29. CountryClub

There are more off days through out the playoffs this year than there have been in the past. If the yanks are able to set their rotation up for the ALDS and they get schedule “ALDS B”, they’ll have Wang and Andy pitch 4 of the 5 games….all on regular rest. And they would then be able to pitch 4 of the first 6 games in the ALCS. Worst case is that they get schedule “ALDS A” and they’ll split 3 games in the ALDS and still pitch 4 of the the first 6 in the ALCS. Obviously, they have to take care of business and make the playoffs first. But if they do and they can set their rotation they’re going to be a TOUGH out.

OFF TOPIC: but does anyone know how hard Alan Horne has been throwing this year?

  33. Global Warming

    NJ,

    92-94.

  34. Boston Dave

this is the K-Rod rule. It’s good in a way but honestly, its a ridiculous rule that just allows teams to do whatever they want. Why even have a rule stating that players have to be on the active roster on Aug 31? They can basically add anyone they want anyway. Another example of the awful MLB rules.

  35. NJ

    Thanks GW.

  36. Bob Michaels

Don`t knock the Sicilians, just remember Joe Di, Tony push em up Lazzeri and Frankis CRO.These great Sicilian American ball players encouraged their Paisons to become Yankee fans in the 30`s.

  37. Global Warming

    Oct 3 Game 1 @ LAA Wang
    Oct 5 Game 2 @ LAA Pettitte
    Travel Day
Oct 7 Game 3 @ NYY Clemens( Hope for a blast from the past)
    Oct 8 Game 4 @ NYY Wang
    Travel Day
    Oct 10 Game 5 @ LAA Pettitte

I love our chances against LAA. Beats the heck out of Wang/Mussina/Johnson/Wright

  38. Motown Yankee Fan

Global warming – I like your pitching lineup, but here’s a question–do we start Pettitte first? I ask this because of his pickoff move. Best in the majors and will keep those base stealing Angels from having a walk be an automatic double.

  39. Jeff NJ

Wait so are we presuming that Carl Pavano won’t be back for October? I was hoping he would be. Someone needs to pick up the ticker tape after the parade.

  40. mel

    Sunny,

Thanks for the links. Just finished reading the Bucky/Kennedy article. Way too much info but I can respect the guys opinion. Bucky sounds nasty, but there’s still something about him that bothers me. Can’t quite put my finger(s) on it…

  41. Jeff NJ

Whoa, Global Warming, I didn’t realize there would be two days off during the first round. Amazing that we would only need 3 starters.

I think Moose and Squirrel still make the team.

  42. Global Warming

    Motown,

I like Pettitte as the #2, reason being you basically have an Ace up your sleeve. He’s been known as a Stopper all season long, all career long. If something were to go wrong in Game 1 with Wang, Pettitte is the best suited by far to handle the pressure of a must win Game 2 on the road

Especially since he pitches to a tune of a 3.28 ERA on road, compared to his 4.41 at Home. He’s a Road warrior and a stopper, he fits perfect into a Game 2 and potential Game 5 on the road.

  43. Global Warming

Jeff and anybody else, here is the 2007 MLB Playoff Schedule if interested.

    http://mlb.mlb.com/news/press_.....p;c_id=mlb

  44. Andrew

Wow, I just saw the revamped postseason schedule. That’s crazy…and actually a really really good idea. Teams shouldn’t have to use their number 4 guys in a 5-game series…sure, this way we’ll only see Lackey, Escobar and Weaver from the Angels, but Wang and Pettitte are not so far removed from their top two…and they get to start 4 of the games.

This makes me very excited for the postseason.

  45. mel

    http://mlb.mlb.com/news/articl.....p;c_id=mlb

They must’ve been using a 2-headed Steinbrenner coin.

  46. Phil

Kevin Thompson was traded to Oakland for cash.

Kind of funny to hear Oakland gave us cash for a player. It is usually us giving up cash for players.

  47. Bry Guy

Troy Glaus a cheater along with the Big G!!!!!

  48. NJ

Look I like the way our rotation could shape up for October, but right now I’m more worried about just getting there. Let’s hold off on that stuff until we put the Wild Card in the bag.

  49. Joan in Cheshire

I’m sure Ian would like to be on the post season roster, however did you all hear that his wedding is scheduled for October 6th?

  50. jennifer

Good luck to Kevin, maybe he’ll see playing time with all the injuries in the oak outfield. Maybe he’ll even help his old org get back to the playoffs.

  51. Rebecca

    Haha that’s AWESOME!

Of course, we won’t actually need the tie breaker!

Off topic, it’s 95 F outside and I don’t have air conditioning. Help?

  52. jennifer

It is freezing in my office. I have a sweater on i’m soo cold.

  55. neyankee

I’m glad for Kevin Thompson, he deserves a shot at the big leagues.

  56. NJ

Well, the heat index outside in Tampa right now is 105

  57. neyankee

    Jennifer,

    That is an interesting comment?

  58. mel

Guess Jason wasn’t such an idiot. Immunity!

Lots of mid-level guys or lower. The stars could afford designer drugs.

  59. Brandon

not on this team Kevin Thompson has had his chance he failed up here. Brett Gardner will make people drool when he gets on base and shows off his defense in the OF.

  60. Phil

Kevin T never really go a chance up here. I’m not saying he deserved a chance over all of the others, but he never got a fair shake here.

  61. Adam

I don’t think Brett Gardner will walk enough or have enough power to be a legit everyday Major Leaguer. Could be a nice 4th or 5th outfielder though. Something like a much better Bubba Crosby.

  62. sunny615

Hard to get a fair shake with signings like Sheffield, Damon, Matsui and homegrowns like Melky and Bernie sitting in front. But good luck KT in Oakland.

  63. sunny615

Tabata will be out everyday come 09

  64. saucy

i could be wrong, but wouldn’t pavano have to be on the active 25 man roster on aug 31 to be able to be replaced on the post-season roster? i think if he suddenly got health (god forbid), he’d be able to bump someone off the roster that was on the 25 man on aug 31, but we don’t get to go over 25 active players.

  65. sunny615

    OUR everyday OF – sheesh

  66. Adam

Did you guys see this from JC Bradbury’s blog today?

“Where we have evidence, the evidence is overwhelming that there HGH is not an ergogenic aid. If you are waiting on the perfect study, it’s never going to come. Ethical concerns will prevent scientists from running these tests. We start with the null hypothesis HGH has no effect on athletic performance, and no one has been able to reject this with the studies that exist. All we have to support HGH’s performance-enhancing claims are rumors that an extravagantly expensive drug does something very different from what we observe in carefully controlled scientific experiments. Unsubstantiated rumor or controlled scientific experiments?…I think I’ll go with the latter.”

Why does the mainstream media continue to ignore this?

  67. mel

    Sunny,

That’s the thing about being signed by the Yankees. That path to the major may be long and meandering. Kids must be thrilled to be drafted by the Yankees, but know they the chances of treading water in the minors or being traded are much greater than them actually playing at Yankee Stadium. I still root for (most) of the guys who make it good with other teams. Pena & Lowell may be exceptions.

  68. Adam

“i could be wrong, but wouldn’t pavano have to be on the active 25 man roster on aug 31 to be able to be replaced on the post-season roster? i think if he suddenly got health (god forbid), he’d be able to bump someone off the roster that was on the 25 man on aug 31, but we don’t get to go over 25 active players.”

Did you even read what was written? You’re able to replace any injured person from you Aug. 31st player pool (plus any players on the 15-day DL, 60-day DL, suspended list, bereavement list, etc.) with another person. Pavano had Tommy John surgery and is out for at least a year from when the operation, so he is going to be eligible to be replaced.

  69. Wolf In Pinstripes

I’m a creep? Wow, that’s news to me.

  70. sunny615

    Found this:

_According to Rule 40(a), a player must be on his club’s active big league roster or disabled list (or bereavement list, suspended list, or military list) on August 31 in order to be eligible for post-season play._

But does anybody remember the 2002 playoffs where Francisco Rodriguez was on the playoff roster despite being in the minors on August 31st? In fact Rodriguez didn’t pitch in the majors until September 18th that year. If a team has a player on the disabled list, they can be replaced. Now depending on where you look, this rule can vary. One variation says that this exception is only for the 60 day DL, and the eligible player can be anyone in the organization. Jim Callis from Baseball America doesn’t specify the DL type, but that the player must be on the 40 man roster.

The only real catch is that the replacement player must play the same position, like a catcher for a catcher, and infielder for an infielder, etc.

Much of the confusion comes from the fact that the rule isn’t really publicized with other Major League rules. The cleanest and simplest expanation I’ve come across is at Mike’s Baseball Rants:

_Playoff Rosters: Playoff rosters must be set at 25, not including disabled players, on August 31. For each player on the 60-day DL, teams may add players to the eligible list during the playoffs at the same position, provided that they were in the orginization on August 31… Teams must choose 25 players from their playoff eligible list before each round of the playoffs._

  71. sunny615

So – Pavano for Kennedy – pitcher for pitcher

  72. Andrew

Does that mean you can change your roster from round to round?

  73. Brandon

we need Gardner up here too, we need a fast pinch runner in a spot that will come up. I believe one of our bats from DH or LF or RF will have an 0 for night and draw a key walk I hope the Yanks bring up Brett Gardner , forget about the clock on his contract bring him up, he will be needed when the bats fall asleep and we get a pitcher on the ropes in the late innings

  74. sunny615

hear that mel. Before Cash, it was almost a snowballs chance in hell you’d see a yankee minor leaguer on the Yankees team – Pettitte, Jeter, Mo, and Bernie being the exceptions. But since the Yankees had poor draft scouts, most of their prospects were busts anyway. Branden Claussen anyone? Dioner Navarro? Lowell was probably the only decent one. Altho, he’s a Bloody Sock, he’s a good enough guy where I won’t root _against_ him.

  75. buchholz eleven

this (new hgh stuff) is going to destroy baseball, no doubt. it feels like a big one this time.

  76. sunny615

Andrew – as long as you follow the rules, yes.

  77. saucy

thanks adam. rough day at work, i think i got it now though.

  78. sunny615

with Villone, Veras, and Pavano, on the DL, there’s also a chance (albeit a microscopic one) that Horne or White could see daylight -

  79. Adam

“this (new hgh stuff) is going to destroy baseball, no doubt. it feels like a big one this time.”

Is this sarcastic or did you not read what I posted?

Also HGH is not new and since it is being distributed legally with a prescription it should be far easier to control than new designer steroids.

This is just the media getting everyone all riled up about PEDs again for no reason.

  80. Guy Incognito

    Buchholz:

Add Troy Glaus, now, too. He was, to me, an obvious PED user (see his anomalous 2000-01 seasons) and it turns out that he bought Nandrolone and testosterone in 2003 and 2004. Where there’s smoke, there’s fire…likely he was using before that as well.

So, here comes the rain…the names in the Florida investigation are coming out. I won’t name names here, but I have had suspicions about many players over the last 7-8 seasons…let’s see if I was right.

  81. Adam

“with Villone, Veras, and Pavano, on the DL, there’s also a chance (albeit a microscopic one) that Horne or White could see daylight -”

There is zero chance they will call up Horne ore White. Besides the fact Veras is not on the DL any longer and Villone is only on the 15 day, it would be ridicluous to expect someone with no MLB experienceto pitch in the postseason.

  82. buchholz eleven

sarcastic, this isn’t that big a deal but i flip on espn and i got people shoving it down my throat like its an hgh comet racing down to earth or something. shoulda put a /sarcasm on it, but no edit button so i couldn’t.

  83. Rebecca

Am just hoping no Yanks are on that list…

  84. buchholz eleven

well yeh guy incognito im there with ya, it’ll be a crappy time for these dudes that get their names called aloud. but the media is on armageddon mode.

  85. sunny615

well zero and microscopic are pretty much the same thing. no need to get nitpicky.

  86. buchholz eleven

yeh rebecca nailed it, i just don’t wanna see a bernie williams or robinson cano on there and i certainly hope that a-rod wont pop up, i never suspect him but still i hope hes not on the list.

  87. saucy

The google ads are getting ridiculous. i saw one yesterday ‘even jesus hates the yankees’, but haven’t seen it since….

but yeah, charlie chowda must die!!!

  88. Deep to Left

“…I think Moose and Squirrel still make the team…”

You mean “Rocky” & “Bullwinkle”, right?

  89. MoreRun

Looking in this way, Pavano is quite useful.

  90. Andrea

Trade Pavano to Ireland for a pot of gold!!!

  91. Jim Clark

Will Pavano get a full share for the post season or can his teammates vote him off the island?

  92. thenextandykosco

    Mr. Abraham:

This is my first time attempting to post a comment in your blog, although I have been reading it since last fall when someone told me that you had information from Cashman that the “Phil Hughes” listed at the time on the 40-man roster on the Yankees “Official” website was actually Colter Bean. It sounded unbelievable at first, but, when the Yankees finally had to option Colter Bean at the end of spring training, they had to own up to having Colter Bean on the 40-man all along.

In any event, I want to belatedly thank you for all that you do for Yankee fans in your blog. I think that most fans realize that you and your employer do not have to do this. You seem to enjoy your work. I hope that you and your employer find this blog profitable and worthwhile in whatever format you choose to run it.

Regarding eligibility for the post-season roster, I believe that you meant to tell your readers that Humberto Sanchez was also on the 60-day DL on August 31, 2007, and would have utility equal to that of Pavano for these 2007 purposes, effectively multiplying the number of “replacement” players in the pool.
