The Yankees won the coin flip to host any game that could determine the wild card, Major League Baseball announced today.

That game, if needed, would be Oct. 1.

While that news is great, I’m thinking we’re not going to need that tie breaker ;)

    WOO-HOO! Corks a-poppin’!

Good that the play-in game would be on Oct. 1. My wedding is Sept. 29th at 6:00 and I have been anxious all season. What happens if that night’s game is meaningful?! No TV! No radio!

who decides heads or tails ? a few years ago was it the tampa gang ? or does cashman get to call it since he has all the power nowadays. I bet that was a lot of pressure back in the early 2000s

“sorry mr. steinbrenner, i called heads”

“dammit cashman, tails never fails. you’re fired.”

The Yankees will have all of their business taken care off before the last days of the season. The tiebreaker’s nice to have if everything else fails, but we won’t have any use for it. We’ll be in the playoffs way before then!

I thought the tie breaker was who won the most games agaisnt each other, i.e. if the Yankes record against the Mariners was 17-13 then the Yanks would get the wild card. Isn’t that how we beat Boston for 1st place once before? Is this not the rule anymore?

    Wild Card is different

  8. Ace September 7th, 2007 at 4:07 pm

    YESSSSSS….yes yes yes….we won that &%#$&**$#%#

    Start spreading the news…

  9. cj September 7th, 2007 at 4:08 pm

That’s if both teams are in the playoffs, I think. In this case, only one of the teams would be in the playoffs.

I think the head to head is only to break the tie of whether it was the division or the wild card. Both teams were going to be in the post season and head to head determined who went in as the wildcard and who won the AL East.

  13. Rebecca September 7th, 2007 at 4:19 pm

Oh, you know the Squirrel was there.

And then he got on a plane and made the flight to Kansas City!

  14. Michael T September 7th, 2007 at 4:19 pm

So we got that goin’ for us…

    which is nice.

I’m in agreement with Rebecca. A tiebreaker situation will not be necessary.

  16. Yanksrule57 September 7th, 2007 at 4:23 pm

That game will not be necessary. But it is a good omen.

If the Yanks take care of business, the wild card will be secured and; The Rocket will get healthy, Andy will keep being the rock of the rotation, CMW will keep his nail clipped and win the Cy Young, Phil will find his groove again, IPK will surprise us by being a ’97 version of Mussina, Joba will continue to strike fear in the heart of hitters throughout baseball, The hitters will get and stay hot and… wait for it…..The squirrel will re-appear and continue his winning streak.

CJ has it right. You need a playoff game if only one team can go to the postseason. The Yankees and Red Sox decided the division on head-to-head record in 2005 because the Red Sox would still be in the playoffs via the wild card. MLB tries to save pitchers for the postseason, rather than having playoffs for seeding purposes only.

    Tonight’s lineup:
Damon lf, Jeter ss, Abreu rf, Rodriguez 3b, Matsui dh, Posada c, Giambi 1b, Cano 2b, Cabrera cf, Kennedy p.
