A-Rod moving up the home run charts

Alex Rodriguez seems to set a record of some sort every time he swings the bat these days. His home run last night gave him 47 as a third baseman this season (he had two as a DH on Wednesday). He needs only two more to set the single-season record for that position.

Most home runs by a 3B
1. Mike Schmidt (Phillies 1980) 48
1. Adrian Beltre (Dodgers 2004) 48
3. Alex Rodriguez (Yankees 2007) 47

He already has the record at shortstop

Most home runs as a SS
1. Alex Rodriguez (Rangers 2002) 57

Then there is this:

Most home runs in a season by a Yankee
1. Roger Maris (1961) 61
2. Babe Ruth (1927) 60
3. Babe Ruth (1921) 59
4. Babe Ruth (1928) 54
4. Babe Ruth (1920) 54
4. Mickey Mantle (1961) 54
7. Mickey Mantle (1956) 52
8. Alex Rodriguez (2007) 49
8. Babe Ruth (1930) 49
8. Lou Gehrig (1934) 49
8. Lou Gehrig (1936) 49

    First things first. I’m first!

A-rod is just too good. There is no way we don’t extend his contract and not lock him up for a few more years at $33Mplus per year.

  2. Andrew September 8th, 2007 at 3:39 pm

Theres no question we should try and get him back next year!

  3. Jen September 8th, 2007 at 3:42 pm

No doubt he’ll be back. No one else can afford to pay him that kind of money, and I think he has really started to enjoy playing in New York, finally. The fans don’t want to see him go. If you asked people that last year, they were saying to cut him loose. Not anymore!

A-Rod is an amazing ballplayer and there really aren’t words to describe what he has meant to the Yankees this year.

I say sign A-Rod for whatever he wants just so we can watch him steamroll the Pedrioa-phile at 2nd every time we play Boston. Give him a bonus each time he steamrolls Pedo, Youkilis and Veritek on the same trip around the bases too. Especially if it’s a home run.

OK $33M would be a butt-load of money. I’d hope it’d be less than $30M but as log as it’s arranged so Texas still pays their share for the remainder of the existing contract, it should balance out to something less obscene (net cost on par with Jeter?) over the length of his contract.

The more records he surpasses this season as a Yankee just makes it easier to believe he will remain in Pinstripes. Alexis already IMHO right up there with Babe, Louand Mantle. Hes arguably the most talented ever and heading to the HOF as a Yankee isnt too shabby.

  7. Ranting Guy September 8th, 2007 at 3:53 pm

We can’t afford to let A-Rod be this good in Boston.

  8. BBFan September 8th, 2007 at 3:56 pm

A-Rod should have more than 54 HRs this season and settle at 4th position. The only players ahead of him being Roger Maris and Babe Ruth. That is amazing given he is a right hand hitter in Yankee stadium.

By the time he retires, one of the seasons he will hit more than 61 HRs and grab the AL HR record. Bonds’ 73 is almost out of reach with natural power only!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It’s a beautiful day out so why are we sitting at our computers??? Oh yeah … I’m at work. :(

  10. Ranting Guy September 8th, 2007 at 3:58 pm

A-Rod’s on pace for 56HR right now, but 49 is already a stellar year.

I sincerely hope that A-Rod will have at least a decent playoffs performance. Otherwise many ignorant fans will turn against him and he will not come back.

Also, I believe that Cashman will offer 5 years at $30mil/year and preempt any sinister moves of Boras. By stating that Yanks will not pursue A-Rod in the open market, Cashman will force Boras hand to re-up with Yankees.

Ultimatley, it is the legacy as a Yankee that will convince A-Rod to stay with Yankees, now that the shadow of Jeter is out of the picture. In fact, once A-Rod signs it is jeter who will be under pressure to perform as his renewal comes in three years.

There is NO way we can afford to let him walk away.

I want to see him retire as a Yankee.

The stage is set and think about it. Does Alex want to be continuously associated with great Yankee names ? Does Alex want to play on a smaller stage when is can play on the biggest of them all and in a new ballpark ? Can Alex make on AND off the field $$$ like he can in NY ? For all the right reasons, he’s staying where he is. It might be dramatic but the deal will be done.

That’s really lame that those two homers don’t count for ARod as a 3rd baseman. I mean hell, he plays 3rd base. In my mind he’s already passed Schmidt!!

  15. Patrick Bateman September 8th, 2007 at 5:54 pm

    Get the extension done Cashman.

  16. Patrick Bateman September 8th, 2007 at 5:57 pm

A-Rod has been in the playoffs every year he’s been on this team you Boston trolling fool.

If he’d been on your garbage team, he would have been sitting home last year since you couldn’t pass Toronto.

  17. Jon September 8th, 2007 at 7:59 pm

    He also hit 47 as a 3B in 2005.

  18. David Devine September 8th, 2007 at 9:09 pm

Someone needs to correct the report on the Yankees website. It states that Alex Rodriguez is the 3rd Yankee to hit 50 + HR in a season (Maris and Mantle are the others). Seems the reporter forgot about some guy named Babe Ruth who played for the Yankees.

Does anyone edit the articles before they get published?

  19. I love Joba September 8th, 2007 at 11:25 pm

A-Rod has 51, not 49 (in the list as most hr’s in a single season by a Yankee)
