Alex Rodriguez on his big night

Peter Abraham
September
8

I’m working to make deadline, but wanted you to hear this interview with Alex Rodriguez:

He talked about having more fun this season, his teammates making fun of him and other topics. He’s the first Yankee to hit 50 homers since Mantle and Maris in 1961.

Give a listen, it’s good stuff.

    thanks Pete !

Yankees are going 16-4 over the last 20 games….96-66…and GOOD ENUFF to pass the BoSox !!! Sweet !

  3. Rebecca--Nothing Beats the Power of Optimism + Squirrel

I like the part when Kim Jones or someone asked if he would settle for an MVP and he said he’d settle for a World Series.

That’s someone you want on your baseball team.

    The rest is just details.

  4. Mehdi the Troll killa

Wait till the next time he homers in the stadium The whole crowd is going to start doing the shoulder thing.

  5. Justin

Ya that Kim Jones question was a very dumb question. “settle for mvp”?; what does that even mean? Sometimes you can tell she only asks questions for the sake of asking them.

  6. KurticusMaximus

Rebecca- yeah, that was a Jeter moment there.

  7. Sherri

I really liked the tone of his voice. He sounds so much better than he did last year. I thought it was interesting how he talked about learning to “laugh at himself.” He was pretty uptight last year, and I think Melky and Cano, and some of those guys have helped him to relax (well, and those 50+ homeruns).

  8. Rebecca--Nothing Beats the Power of Optimism + Squirrel

Mehdi: I am CRACKING UP just thinking about it!

  9. Catya

Arod is in a zone.Something tells me He’ll be back next season. He’s “feelin” the New York Love you can tell.

  10. eelz

sherri- right on. a-rod sounds very relaxed and down to earth. last year he sounds like condaleeza rice up there. hearing him say how he finally feels so good in new york was nice to hear. why would he want to give that up?

  11. Sherri

Did you hear him say Damon thinks he’s trying to win an Oscar??

  12. Motown Yankee Fan

Oh Alex, please come back next year. Please.

Thanks Pete for that great audio. And that totally was a Jeter-moment when he said he would settle for a world championship. Me too Alex. For so long I have been trying to accept that they won’t make it to the post-season, while just hoping all along that they will. But now, it’s starting to seem possible. The thing is, I wish YES could carry the post-season, because something about Joe Buck’s voice makes me lose my mind. Too nervewracking….

  13. Bob Michaels

I can`t wait till A-Rod gets hot again!

  14. Bob Michaels

Brian Bruney is built like a Sportswriter, Guess who?

  15. Stuart

Seattle is totatlly done, Detroit is our last worry..

The terrible losses to Detroit in the Henn game and the SUnady 1 run loss look huge at present..

they need to win Sunday and another day goes off the schedule….

  16. Catya

    Motown yankee fan

Joe buck is a cardinal fan. Cardinal fans hate the New York Yankees. They say we spend too much money on players. The ones I know want a salary cap.So buck is a little bias.

  17. pat

Learning how to laugh at yourself is a valuable life skill. Some learn it early, some later and some never at all. Sounds like he has learned to embrace who he is more this year rather than trying to be someone he’s not.

    *ZACK GREINKE* ( 1st round pick – 6 th overall – in 2002 )

    *Last 10 appearances*::

    IP: 19
    H: 14
    R: 0
    ER: 0
    BB: 3
    K: 19
    HR: 0
    ERA: 0.0000

  19. Pete Feng

A-Rod is my MVP no matter what and Yankees is the team I believe will win the WS this year.

  20. Drive 4-5

Tomorrow’s game is no lock. Our best shot is that KC’s batters stay impatient and CMW matches Grienke till we get to their bullpen.

The other night I heard an amazing ARod stat. Over 245 of his career home runs have either tied the game, given his team a lead or won the game.

  21. LGV

Maybe this was talked about before, but what is the reason for the shoulder roll? I mean, I know it’s for everytime A-Rod goes yard, buy why a shoulder roll.

  22. Rebecca--Nothing Beats the Power of Optimism + Squirrel

Looks like FEAR FACTOR just took Joba’s line…

  23. pat

Yankees faced Greinke as a reliever twice in July and once in August. They ripped him once (5runs, no outs), he no hit them once for 1 inning and he gave up 1 run in one inning once.

He may be a good pitcher but at last they have faced him before.

  24. Mehdi the Troll killa

Hey Rebecca that squirrel gets around. I was at the first game he appeared but I don’t remember them showing it on the big screen. I didn’t see him until i got home and saw the highlights. I’m a huge Arsenal fan (as if anyone cares) and a squirrel popped up at their Champions League match against Villareal from Spain a couple of years ago. Now he’s risked his life to come over and bring his luck to the royalty that are the Yankees.

  25. Andrea

Ok. What’d I miss. I hate missing a whole game. What shoulder roll?

  26. frits

They are imitating the way he holds his shoulder and rotates his arm, as if his shoulder is hurt. The whole bullpen was doing it, making fun of him for acting like his shoulder is hurting him, even though he’s crushing the ball.

  27. Rebecca--Nothing Beats the Power of Optimism + Squirrel

Mehdi: Hah! My study abroad program tried to get us to support Chelsea, but I have a thing for Man U…

  28. LGV

    Thanks frits.

  29. mel

I saw the bullpen doing it and I thought they were doing calisthenics.

But from what I can gather from Alex’s audio, the guys are doing it to tease Alex. How can he be hitting homeruns if that thing is sore and he’s always rolling it kind of thing.

  30. frits

“Would you settle for an MVP?”

“I would settle for a World Championship”

And the chills run down my back.

  31. MGW

    Man U?
    Aw, gee…..
    Go Gunners!
    [Sorry, Queen]

  32. Rebecca--Nothing Beats the Power of Optimism + Squirrel

Auburn just lost to unranked USF in overtime.

  33. Mehdi the Troll killa

Chelsea are artificial. I hate Man U, but I respect them for their history. Chelsea are manufatured.

  34. Rebecca--Nothing Beats the Power of Optimism + Squirrel

Frits: Yea, that got me too…

  35. Jamie

    ARSENAL!!!!!!!!

    GO GOONERS!~!!!!@!

  36. Mehdi the Troll killa

UP THE ARSENAL! COME ON YOU REDS!

  37. They Shruted It

Arod is a true Yankee. Pay him whatever he needs. Period.

  38. Paddy R

a seattle win accompanied by a yankees win accompanied by a new york football giants win would make for a lovely sunday.

  39. Rebecca--Nothing Beats the Power of Optimism + Squirrel

    Paddy: Almost.

A Seattle win, Yankees win, and Jets win would make for a PERFECT Sunday.

The Giants are free to win too, just as long as the Jets do!

I’m not sure who has the better chance, though…and why are we playing chief rivals in week one?!

  40. Andrea

Oh man. That bullpen thing sounds funny.

  41. Brian

I love A-Rod, he’s warmed up to New York this year as we have to him. Hopefully we make the playoffs and his success continues. I haven’t felt this good about this team in about five years..

  42. DesignatedBlogger

Funny, I haven’t heard any discussion this season over who the best third baseman in NY is. ARod is having a dream season, and he’s right, he had monster years in Texas but they weren’t in the middle of a pennant race.

  43. Rockin' Rich

    Peter;

Thanks for posting the interview but sure would like to see some video of the A-Rod Shoulder Shuffle, too.

    Por favor?

Nice to hear that Alex still has his Miami accent, too.

    Go Canes!

    Oy.

  44. conman

The shoulder roll: a-rod slid into second (safe) and came up rubbing and “rolling” his shoulder. His next at bat was a homer.

  45. johncon

I always thought that if you’re from NY, you were either a yankee/giant/knick/ranger fan or a met/jet/net/islander fan. Was never sure where the bills fit in!

  46. saucy

just switch nets and knicks and you’ve got it

    orange and green over there…

  47. Yankees177

Can someone get me a picture of A-Rod rotating his shoulder?
