Update on Derek Jeter

Peter Abraham
September

Derek Jeter will not play tomorrow. He has patellar tendinitis in his right knee. Dr. Thomas Phillips of the Royals examined him after the game.

Joe Torre indicated that Alberto Gonzalez would start at shortstop tomorrow.

Stay tuned for audio from A-Rod.

This is not good news. Hopefully Jeter can rebound.

  2. Andrea

    Bad news for the Captain.

Hope Jeter is able to take advantage of the time off–that he gets two days off now is a blessing.

  4. sox rock

DL list for the Captain hope he makes it back in time for the playoffs

  5. Catya

Ggeat it’s not as bad as it seemed. He needs a break anyway.

    “Management of patellar tendinosis”
“The condition is hard to treat and frustrating for both patient and doctor.

Although stopping the ‘overuse’ activitity is the best approach to arresting deterioration, this is often a major problem as it so often occurs in people who concentrate on a particular sport or activity and may earn their living from it.”

Telling the Captain to stop,,,,now ?….this could be tricky !

  7. Sherri

commonly referred to as “jumper’s knee.” I think it’s more common among basketball players, but I sure hope the time off gives Jeter some needed rest and hopefully he’ll be back in business soon!

  8. Joe da man

With the way Jeter plays, does it surprise anyone that he would have jumpers knee?

  9. Marius

Good thing about his tendinitus is that you have to keep working it out in treatment. So a couple days off will be good for Jeter, but I don’t expect him to go on the DL. Maybe taking some days as DH or getting pulled mid game. Which isn’t all that bad with Alberto playing defense for Jeter. Jeter has been in a hitting slump anyway, so it’s not like we won games cause of him. Gotta get him nice and healthy for the post season.

He needs some days off. He hasn’t been hitting well lately and has been letting some groundballs thru. Gonzo looks pretty good at SS and if matsui can beat his slump and add some offensive punch, Jeter can rest and get ready for the final push.

  11. Brandon

alright !! no offense to Jetes but he needs rest anyway plus in a playful but truthful way people more Gonzo at SS meaning better up the middle defense :D

Patellar tendinitis is not a serious injury. Surgery is never required. The treatment is rest, ice and non steroid drugs like ibuprophen.

  13. Bart

Click my name for the Mayo Clinic’s site about patellar tendinitis. Full recovery can take a few weeks, though it should be faster for an excellent athlete who is willing to play through pain. I don’t think Jetes would consent to a DL stint anyway. Just so long as he’s back by October.

  14. Mr. Vegas

What would be the point of DL’g a player in September? You can call up whomever you want anyway.

  15. Adam

This is what Manny Ramirez was dealing with last season, and Oritz has been playing through it all year.

  16. Matt

The Yankees are 3 games up over the Tigers for the Wild Card and they are the only team they need to worry about with the Mariners being 5 out now. I would give Jeter a full week off. Yes in KC, the entire series in Toronto cuz its astroturf than reevaluate him Friday in Boston. Jeter can maybe play some DH in Boston and Betemit and Gonzalez can cover SS over the next week.
