Statistically speaking from Toronto

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Sep 10, 2007 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

I’d like to tell you it was an exciting day off in Toronto. But got here, did some work, took a nap (4 a.m. wake-up calls will do that to you) and did some more work.

A few statistics of interest.

Career OBP
(min. of 3,000 PA)
33. Jason Giambi .4110
41. Bobby Abreu .4084
105. Alex Rodriguez .3886
109. Derek Jeter .3883
169. Posada .3795

It’s little wonder the Yankees are on a pace to score 956 runs.

Catchers over the age of 35 who have hit .330 with 19 homers and 84 RBI
1. Jorge Posada

What’s even more amazing is that only six other catchers of any age have put up those numbers: Mike Piazza (3 times), Pudge Rodriguez (2 times), Bill Dickey (2 times), Ernie Lombardi, Gabby Hartnett and Brian McCann.

You have to wonder if they’ll regret it, but the Yankees almost have to give Posada $28 million over two years.

Career home runs
13. Mickey Mantle 536
14. Jimmie Foxx 534
15. Willie McCovey, Ted Williams 521
16. Alex Rodriguez 516

By the time he turns 33, A-Rod is going to have more homers than Williams and Mantle. It’s mind-boggling.

This is going to be one expensive winter.

  2. Jaspal September 10th, 2007 at 11:45 pm

First things first. I’m first again.

Pete, these are good statistics. No doubt we gotta resign Posada and extend A-Rod at $33M plus a year. There really is no other option.

If we make it to the playoffs this year, I feel that there will be another long streak of playoff runs coupled with a few WS rings.

2 out of 3 in Toronto is a must for us to be in the playoffs with the way Detroit is playing.

  3. Jaspal September 10th, 2007 at 11:45 pm

Damn, got beaten again. Well, I was first when I was typing it…

  4. mel September 10th, 2007 at 11:51 pm

Give him whatever it takes. He can always DH or play 1st if the whole catching thing doesn’t work out. Also, retain the services of Jose Molina if possible.

O/T I don’t usually like brash young athletes, but that Chad Johnson is so entertaining.

  5. crawdaddy September 10th, 2007 at 11:52 pm

    Pete,
You mean before Arod turns 33 years old. He was born in 1972.

  6. crawdaddy September 10th, 2007 at 11:52 pm

    I meant 1975.

  7. Rebecca--Nothing Beats the Power of Optimism + Squirrel September 11th, 2007 at 12:00 am

    You know, I’m thinking:

What say we get the rings and the non-’roid season home run record back in NY, where they belong?

    Who’s with me?

  8. Bronx Born September 11th, 2007 at 12:10 am

I am totally with you Rebecca!!!

  9. Catya September 11th, 2007 at 12:14 am

Rebecca amen sister!!!! We also get Arod too,he’s staying
in NY.Cash would’nt make that mistake.

  10. Pete Feng September 11th, 2007 at 12:21 am

    I am with you!!

  11. Sherri September 11th, 2007 at 12:28 am

I’m with you and the squirrel!

  12. Ranting Guy September 11th, 2007 at 12:31 am

    I’m the squirrel!

  13. Squirrel September 11th, 2007 at 12:32 am

    me too !

  14. Uncle Vito September 11th, 2007 at 12:33 am

Good night ALL…here’s to both NYY and BOS staying RIGHT ON the track their on !

  15. mel September 11th, 2007 at 12:34 am

I’m on the fence. I want him to get it. But I wouldn’t mind if he didn’t get it this year. Attaining such a goal might be incentive to come back in ’08. ;)

This is how tight the top 5 spots are in the AL:

    Yankees are:

4 back of Red Sox in loss column
    3 back of Angels
    2 back of Indians
    4 ahead of Tigers

  16. Rebecca--Nothing Beats the Power of Optimism + Squirrel September 11th, 2007 at 12:39 am

So let’s make sure we keep the OPTIMISM going, shall we? It hasn’t failed us yet!

I’ve got to do as a lot of you don’t, and go to sleep, but if you all miss me that much, just click the name…

Less than nineteen hours till Game Time!

  17. MGW September 11th, 2007 at 12:42 am

I’m with Rebecca and the Squirrel.
A-Rod and the non-steroid homer title,
and at some point, the overall homer
crown for one year and for career.
    Optimistic :-)

To me when you resign your own players your paying them for what they’ve already done. Thats why no matter what Jorge and Mo get for however many years they get is already money well spent. Thats not even factoring the money Pavono Giambi Wright Karsay Igawa Farnsworth and others stole (Kevin Brown was a trade and a bad one)

  19. Stuart September 11th, 2007 at 1:01 am

Arod no option give him $33 mill.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

you people are insane no player makes even 423 a yr but we are going to pay him $33, and the reason is????

WHo is signing him for $33 mill?/

    NO ONE…………………..

  20. Dr. Acula September 11th, 2007 at 2:29 am

Da Squirrel is gonna be expensive to resign. Agent Scott Boras will likely demand salted nuts and a luxery box. I also hear da Squirrel will be hosting next year’s oscars.

    Da Squirrel is all ham

Are the OBP stats restricted to active players?

Aren’t HR totals up across the board since Mantle and Williams played? Plus Williams lost time serving his country and Mantle was injured a lot, so there are circumstances that mitigate those statistical comparisons.

  22. Jim Clark September 11th, 2007 at 7:56 am

Mantle was a lot more durable than people remember. In his first 13 years he played more games than DiMaggio. Played in pain wrapped in tape (impressed Early Wynn at all star games) and was too stupid to do his winter workouts but he played.

Should we regard Jorge Posada’s season as suspiciously as we did Gary Matthews Jr season last year or as we should David Ortiz’s Red Sox career? Or Roger Clemens’s last decade? Or Lance Armstrong’s career? The nature of our “better living thru chemistry” times.

  23. youngtimer September 11th, 2007 at 8:46 am

And wouldn’t it be sweet if A-Rod hit #522 while in Boston.

  24. Mike S. September 11th, 2007 at 9:38 am

Thanks, Whoa. You made the point that I wanted to. No offense to A-Rod, but Williams lost 3 full years due to WWII (ages 25-27), then most of two more due to Korea. (ages 33 and 34). Mays lost most of 1952 and all of 1953 to Korea. Even someone like Bobby Murcer lost two full years due to Vietnam.

When one writes or talks about Alex being the youngest to….they never mention that Alex doesn’t have to worry about being drafted. This is not a knock on Alex, whose achievements have been staggering. But I am one who remembers Thurman Munson once racing up the NJ Turnpike after serving weekend reserve duty just so that he could PH late in the 2nd game of a DH. Today’s players don’t have to worry about that.

Elston Howard’s 1964 (his last great year, he collapsed horribly in 1965, and until his retirement in 1968 wasn’t 1/2 the player he was):

.313-15-84, 3rd in MVP voting which he had won the year before. Ellie was 35 in 1964.

Let’s not forget that LF (about where the plexiglass starts today) was 402 in 1964 (about 370 now?–no marker) and that LCF was 457 then (399 now). How much these dimensions hurt Ellie, we will never know.

  25. saucy September 11th, 2007 at 10:32 am

don’t we already have the non-roid season hr record in NY?

and yeah, are the OBP totals for active players or allofem?

  26. hmmm September 11th, 2007 at 10:35 am

“You have to wonder if they’ll regret it, but the Yankees almost have to give Posada $28 million over two years.”

Pete, this ain’t getting it done. at all.

the Yankees would do this deal right now with no questions asked if they could.

Posada can get 3 years, $45 on the open market.

the Mets would gladly overpay for Posada.

  27. rover September 11th, 2007 at 11:26 am

well the mick will be in good company then.

  28. Pittsburgh Yankee September 11th, 2007 at 3:51 pm

Please take a minute, Yankee fans, and look a bit deeper into Putnam Sox Fan’s analysis, since it says a lot about the state of Red Sox nation. (PS, thank you PSF, for not acting like a troll on the Yankee board.

    (1) They know deep in their hearts that the Yankees will sign ARod, or some team (unlikely them, but possible) will be handicapped with a $35 million plus long term contract. “The Red Sox are close with Boras,” yes, but so are the Yankees and Angels. Very bad news for RSN.

    (2) “It will be difficult for the Yankees to pay ARod, Posada, Rivera, and keep Abreu.” Oh, the RSN wishes this, don’t they? Everyone but ARod is a lock to come back at this point, and the Yankees are freeing Clemens salary this year and a ton of salary after 2008, with all of the farm pitchers coming up. They could offer Abreu a longer term with a lower $$$ number to replace the option they are likely to pick up. Also bad news for RSN.

    (3) “The pitching staff could use some reinforcements. Wang and Pettite are good if they stay healthy.” Yes, and have they been totally injured (other than the fluke Wang hamstring) this year? Just two of the best second half pitchers in baseball, that is all. Again, very bad for RSN.

    (4) “Joba and Hughes are question marks for the rotation next year.” Oh, really? Add Kennedy to the mix and I think they will be just fine, thank you. Three tremendous rookies, a Cy young candidate, and a great second half veteran as starters does not faze me a bit. RSN, watch out.

    (5) “The bullpen needs a overhaul.” Nice try. Mo plus any of several super farmhands will do the job, since our starters will be much better and much more stable.

Analysis is one thing, PSF. Wishful thinking is another. Hope they take both of the next 2 games from Tampa, or this weekend will be mighty interesting. Schilling throwing 87 right now, Matz and Okijima kind of on fumes, Wakefield, Manny, Ortiz nursing nagging injuries…a very interesting next two-three weeks awaits.
