Game 145: Yankees at Blue Jays

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Sep 12, 2007 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Here is the lineup:

YANKEES
Damon DH
Jeter SS
Abreu RF
Rodriguez 3B
Matsui LF
Posada C
Giambi 1B
Cano 2B
Cabrera CF
Mussina RHP (8-10, 5.51)

Pregame chatter: Yanks are facing RHP Dustin McGowan (10-8, 3.90). … The Moose is starting for the first time since Aug. 27. This is his first start against the Jays this season. … The Yankees are 4-0 on their trip, 39-19 since the break and 44-21 since July 2. … The Yankees have outscored the opposition 29-12 on the trip so far. … A-Rod has hit in seven straight at 15 of 27 with 11 RBI and seven homers.

UPDATE, 6 p.m.: Shelley Duncan is on his way back from New York. He has a bone bruise on the left side of his pelvis and a small inguinal hernia. “It’s good news,” Torre said.

Duncan is day-to-day.

UPDATE, 7:46 p.m.: Sorry for the lack of updates but I can’t get on the wireless here at the Rogers Centre. Did I mention that Rogers is a wireless communications company? Apparently it’s one of the worst ones as they can’t even wire their own stadium correctly.

Meanwhile, Hideki Matsui proves once again that Joe Torre knows his team better than anybody else. He showed faith in Matsui and it paid off. I suspect Torre knows he needs Matsui for the postseason and building his confidence has to start now, not in October.

Anyway, I’m on dial-up and have a ton of work to do. I’ll check back in later.

UPDATE, 8:48 p.m.: All those who had Mike Mussina tossing a three-hit shutout after five innings raise your hand. The Moose has had a few line drives caught. But when he was going bad he had a lot of bloops fall in.

If Mussina is back and Clemens is healthy, the Yankees will have six starters. Not a bad problem to have going down the stretch.

UPDATE, 9:17 p.m.: Joba warming up. But do you use him one inning or two? It could depend on the score.

Meanwhile, just a prediction, but Mussina will be the Game 4 starter in any playoff series. Joe Torre will look for any reason to use him.

UPDATE, 9:57 p.m.: The streak is over. Mighty Joba has allowed a run. It was unearned, however. Meanwhile all those pitches blow him out until Saturday.

UPDATE, 10:06 p.m.: Joba threw 35 pitches. We won’t see him again until the weekend.

Matsui in left? Worrisome. With Moose going, we need all the defense we can get. Would prefer Johnny Angel out there.

  2. sunny615 September 12th, 2007 at 3:48 pm

Let’s hope Moose has some quality innings in him still… I wonder just how short of a leash is he on?

  3. (Mike AKA Avery Blasts Brodeur) September 12th, 2007 at 3:49 pm

Moose has something to prove tonight. I hope he rises to the occasion.

  4. Motown Yankees Fan September 12th, 2007 at 3:52 pm

I would think it is a short leash given that there are, what, 20 guys in the bullpen.

  5. blackaccord September 12th, 2007 at 3:55 pm

If moose can give 5+ innings of less than 3 run ball with a lead, yanks can unleash Joba, Krazy Kyle and Mo… yanks better handle mcgowan like the way they handled marcum.. I can see the bluejays give up on the game if the yanks get to a quick lead..

  6. chris in fairfield September 12th, 2007 at 3:56 pm

this has got to be one of the greatest second half records in history .

  7. Jim Johnson September 12th, 2007 at 3:56 pm

Yeah, surprising to see Matsui in left over Johnny. We need that guy healthy.

  8. Rebecca--Nothing Beats the Power of Optimism + Squirrel September 12th, 2007 at 3:57 pm

Would much rather Damon in left, but otherwise no complaints about the lineup.

Do or die for Mussina tonight, but we all know that OPTIMISM WORKS!

So, in other words, I’m not worried!

  9. DesignatedBlogger September 12th, 2007 at 3:58 pm

Igawa is already warming up in the bullpen.

  10. Motown Yankees Fan September 12th, 2007 at 3:59 pm

    Igawa. Ouch!

  11. Girardi September 12th, 2007 at 4:00 pm

Hideki and his bad knees running around on astroturf, *and* *again* batting 5th instead of Jorge? Jesus H. Christ…

  12. Scottâ„¢ September 12th, 2007 at 4:01 pm

Damon must be a little sore after that catch last night.

  13. The D train September 12th, 2007 at 4:02 pm

I’d like to see Steve Phillips as a talk show host and doing an interview with Shelley Duncan.

    You’re right Rebecca

Ill start filling the tank on the Optimisim bus.

Oh look, its already half full.

  15. E-ROC September 12th, 2007 at 4:03 pm

LOL, Matsui in left field while Damon DHs. Torre probably thought about it and still made the wrong call.

I would have thought Molina would get the start over Posada because Mussina doesn’t like Posada. Yes, it’s THAT serious. It’s a joke, but it’s true.

  16. KurticusMaximus September 12th, 2007 at 4:04 pm

I just hope the Yankee bats keep up the good work tonight.

At this point, I’m expecting 5 runs in 5-6 innings from Moose, and I think that would actually be pretty okay, all things considered. I love Moose, but I think he’s at the end of his line this season.

But if the Yankee line-up can give Moose the extra breathing room, even giving up 5 runs could be good enough to squeak by. And this is definitely one of those games where the more runs the Yanks can score, the better. I think Moose needs his team behind him to keep his confidence up, so he can go out there and try to save the end of his season.

  17. Rockin' Rich September 12th, 2007 at 4:05 pm

Let’s hope he pitches like Moose and not mousse…

  18. migames September 12th, 2007 at 4:07 pm

Jim Rome is a douche…so is chris everett….Shelley can take both of them on

  19. Jim Clark September 12th, 2007 at 4:07 pm

Mike Mussina and a cast of thousands on the mound tonight.

  20. Dr. Acula September 12th, 2007 at 4:08 pm

    *Playoff Seeds*

    Loss
    Column

    Red Sox 58

    Halos 59

    Indians 60

    Yankees 62

It’s all up for grabs, baby.

Cleveland is currently losing 5-1 in the 7th.

  21. MGW September 12th, 2007 at 4:11 pm

    D-Man, nice touch! [Half-full already :-) ]
    Go Yankees!

  22. Rebecca--Nothing Beats the Power of Optimism + Squirrel September 12th, 2007 at 4:12 pm

Dr. A–Dude, are you saying that if the WC seed finishes with less losses than the division winners in the Central or West, we’d get the higher seed?

  23. rbizzler September 12th, 2007 at 4:13 pm

I posted this on the Matsui thread that died, but people looking for Yankee minor league stuff should check out River Avenue Blues.

Mike A. and the guys at River Avenue Blues do a great job:
    http://www.riveraveblues.com/

  24. Dr. Acula September 12th, 2007 at 4:16 pm

    Rebecca-

    no.

that’s just to mark our position relative to the other division winners.

winning the eastern divison is very doable.

  25. mel September 12th, 2007 at 4:17 pm

Home field goes to the better team, even if it is the wild card.

  26. Rebecca--Nothing Beats the Power of Optimism + Squirrel September 12th, 2007 at 4:19 pm

Dr. A–Okay, I thought that was the case!

    TO THE DIVISION!

Oh, who wants to count how many times the Yankees mention the ‘hah’ game today?!

  27. Rebecca--Nothing Beats the Power of Optimism + Squirrel September 12th, 2007 at 4:19 pm

and by Yankees, of course, I mean Micheal Kay and co…

  28. DMan September 12th, 2007 at 4:20 pm

I won’t be counting, but ill fend a guess.. Ill say.. 25 times.

  29. Brandon September 12th, 2007 at 4:25 pm

the Giambino at 1st I mean lets be honest 3 run HR for Betemit he’s bench the next day, Giambi hits one he’ll be on this lineup for a week .. :D

don’t do that disappearing act now Jason especially w/ Wussina pitching

  30. DesignatedBlogger September 12th, 2007 at 4:30 pm

He didn’y say “HA!” anyway, he said “MINE!”

  31. NYY September 12th, 2007 at 4:32 pm

_Home field goes to the better team, even if it is the wild card._

I don’t think so. Wild Card team won’t get the Home Field until they reach the World Series.

  32. gianthinker September 12th, 2007 at 4:33 pm

Matsui needs to relax and fix his mechanics. I wouldnt mind seeing him get a couple of days off.

DesignatedBlogger-I dont know what replay you watched but A-Rod clearly didnt say “Mine!”. I dont know that he said “Ha!” either but it was a lot closer to ha than mine.

  33. Uncle Vito September 12th, 2007 at 4:35 pm

    Yankees win tonight….. 12-8 Final Score….on our way to 96-66, baby !!!! ( maybe enough for the #1 seed in the A.L. ? )

  34. Mike September 12th, 2007 at 4:38 pm

    I still want Igawa Time.

1 inning or so to see if we could even go to him for relief in needed situations. ‘Cause he obviously isn’t starting.

  35. saucy September 12th, 2007 at 4:38 pm

yeah, i was always under the impression that the wild-card team never got home-field advantage until the world series… i guess i haven’t paid attention too much since we’ve been division winners for a while now.

  36. -. . --. .- - .. ...- .. - -.-- .-. ..- .-.. . ... September 12th, 2007 at 4:45 pm

    Yankees lose 8-2 tonight.
Let’s hope Boston and Detroit lose too.

  37. Victor the Predictor September 12th, 2007 at 4:48 pm

Torre will have seen enough by the time Mussina has thrown 40 pitches. Four relievers starting with Karstens will get the Yankees though with good run support.

  38. Rebecca--Nothing Beats the Power of Optimism + Squirrel September 12th, 2007 at 4:49 pm

Dude, guys, you’re not going to beat Vito’s predictions. That’s like impossible!

  39. mel September 12th, 2007 at 4:52 pm

O.k. I was wrong, the wild card never has homefield until they make it to the WS & only if their league won the advantage.

Stinks, because a team with as bad a record as the Cardinals had l last year shouldn’t be given home field if a WC team outperformed them.

  40. Paddy R September 12th, 2007 at 4:53 pm

ummmmmmmmmmmmmm can matsui get a day off? i know he has been hitting lately and it might be tough to get him out of the lineup when he is this hot, but he could use a day…

…my word we need matsoo HEALTHY in the playoffs because he always seems to hit good pitching. he just gets locked in. going to be tough to do that with no knees though. i’m sure the turf will help that tonight though.

  41. DesignatedBlogger September 12th, 2007 at 4:53 pm

    gianthinker,

that’s funny, cos to me he clearly says “Mine!” Either way, he doesn’t say “Ha!” Why would he say that? It doesn’t mean anything.

  42. saucy September 12th, 2007 at 4:56 pm

it can always be changed Mel. They changed it in basketball last year so that the division winners weren’t always seeded 1,2, and 3. don’t know if we’ll see that change in baseball.

  43. saucy September 12th, 2007 at 4:58 pm

“Either way, he doesn’t say “Ha!â€? Why would he say that? It doesn’t mean anything.”

but maybe he said “ha” because it doensn’t mean anything

  44. Bronx Born September 12th, 2007 at 4:59 pm

I have a good feeling about Moose tonight. I think he has raised his necessity level and will pitch a superb game.

  45. Ed FL September 12th, 2007 at 5:01 pm

Mussina is aproud man and a professional. He will try like hell to prove he still has it.

  46. DesignatedBlogger September 12th, 2007 at 5:02 pm

Oh, man, if Moose pitches a good game tonight, then Torre might use him in the playoffs.

  47. Bronx Born September 12th, 2007 at 5:03 pm

Dang, I just read my last post. I think I swallowed a tube of that optimism toothpaste that Rebecca is giving away from her blog… :)

  48. Rebecca--Nothing Beats the Power of Optimism + Squirrel September 12th, 2007 at 5:04 pm

Moose is pitching tonight not for the Yankees win or to pitch in October; he’s pitching for his career.

  49. Rebecca--Nothing Beats the Power of Optimism + Squirrel September 12th, 2007 at 5:05 pm

And by that I mean that Mussina knows what’s on the line, so he’ll pitch his heart out.

And the Yankees will win :-D

  50. Bronx Born September 12th, 2007 at 5:05 pm

I got it on the down-low that it was not really A-Rod who said ha or mine – it was Damon who is a trained ventriloquist and he threw his voice out on the base paths and made it seem like it was Alex. That’s what my insider buddy said to me…

  51. Luigi September 12th, 2007 at 5:05 pm

we might be seeing some kind of combination of mussina, karstens, igawa, and desalvo early on

this could get ugly real quick if moose pitches like he has been lately

  52. Uncle Vito September 12th, 2007 at 5:10 pm

…and once again, we all have someone to laugh at…

  53. Rebecca--Nothing Beats the Power of Optimism + Squirrel September 12th, 2007 at 5:11 pm

Vito: I’m right there along with you!

  54. Moose Jab September 12th, 2007 at 5:13 pm

I’m guessing Moose will not make it out of the 3rd inning

  55. DCJim September 12th, 2007 at 5:13 pm

“Hideki and his bad knees running around on astroturf, and again batting 5th instead of Jorge? Jesus H. Christ…”

I am not a baseball manager nor do not pretend to be a baseball manager but I must agree that this move by a future HOF baseball manager is very difficult for me to understand after watching Hideki in last night’s game. I hope Matsui-san will have a great game tonight.

  56. DCJim September 12th, 2007 at 5:15 pm

Oops … *nor do I pretend

  57. migames September 12th, 2007 at 5:17 pm

i just had to share this, Joe Morgan said this today: Well the run differential means nothing. It is like OPS, it mean nothing in the grander scheme of things.

  58. Rebecca--Nothing Beats the Power of Optimism + Squirrel September 12th, 2007 at 5:19 pm

You guys, you know yesterday we all ragged on Giambi and then he went yard with three men on base.

Are we trying to make the same thing happen with Matsui? :-D

  59. johnny damon September 12th, 2007 at 5:20 pm

yankees suck mike lowell will win the mvp and the red sox will win the world series. this blog site is going to turn into a boston fan club. im sending all red sox nation here. haha bitches. yankees suck

  60. Jeremy September 12th, 2007 at 5:21 pm

I’m giving Torre the benefit of the doubt and thinking that Damon needs a day to recover after his diving catch.

  61. S.o.S.27 September 12th, 2007 at 5:23 pm

“ummmmmmmmmmmmmm can matsui get a day off?”

I’v been saying this all day but Torre must be ignoring me. Give him 2 days off and Jeter d.h. duties to rest his knees.

  62. nate c. September 12th, 2007 at 5:24 pm

yet another reason we need registration

  63. Yanks fan in Austin September 12th, 2007 at 5:29 pm

I hate to say this, but I really hope Moose gets ripped tonight so Torre doesn’t consider using him in the playoffs, if we make it of course.

  64. Ranting Guy September 12th, 2007 at 5:33 pm

Sushi has been struggling lately but he does have the 2nd most HR (23) on the team.

  65. Carmine September 12th, 2007 at 5:35 pm

I just wanted to throw an idea on the Matsui issue. I think with the way he’s been making contact lately, he’s going to break out on his own, but if they were going to shift around the lineup, what about swapping Matsui and Abreu? I know it’s a pretty silly idea to bat a guy who’s slumping number 3, but it’s also silly to have a guy who’s slumping protecting A-Rod with how he’s been hitting lately. Matsui would most likely see better pitches in front of A-Rod and Abreu would provide slightly better protection behind A-Rod. As I said though, I feel like it’ll work itself out and until it starts costing the Yankees wins, there’s probably no great reason to move Matsui around at all.

  66. S.o.S.27 September 12th, 2007 at 5:38 pm

“I hate to say this, but I really hope Moose gets ripped tonight so Torre doesn’t consider using him in the playoffs, if we make it of course.”

I’d like to add that if he bombs it will be more likely that
    A. HE RETIRES.
    B. WE TRY AND FIND A TAKER NEXT YEAR.
    C. BECOMES LONG RELIEF FOR GOOD.

no consideration for a starting spot next year.

  67. nate c. September 12th, 2007 at 5:38 pm

johnny damon – we welcome sox fans on this blog, but for meaningful discussions. if you’re going to make comments like that then just leave.

  68. Rebecca--Nothing Beats the Power of Optimism + Squirrel September 12th, 2007 at 5:39 pm

Carmine: It’s an interesting idea, but the problem is that Damon and Jeter aren’t slumping, and Abreu’s certainly not slumping…

Anyway, right now’s not the time you experiment. After we clinch the division, well, then by all means…

  69. ray September 12th, 2007 at 5:40 pm

    Johnny Damon

You are giving all Red Sox fans a bad rep….cool it!

  70. rbizzler September 12th, 2007 at 5:41 pm

I love the lineup criticism as most nights the payer in question ends up having a big game. I find it laughable that people think that they have their ‘finger on the pulse of the team’ better than the manager. Granted he does have some serious loyalty tendencies and some rookie issues (which seem to have been expunged, anyone seen Villone lately?), but the guy knows how to do his job. Period.

  71. Carmine September 12th, 2007 at 5:41 pm

I agree it’s not a time to experiment. I think Matsui will fix himself anyway.

  72. JJ September 12th, 2007 at 5:41 pm

dude get a life, u obviouly feel thertend by the yankees, maybe francona should take a page out of belidick’s book and cheat, he might as well all boston teams resort to dirt bag type things …..all boston fans are low life scum bags

  73. johnny damon September 12th, 2007 at 5:44 pm

    hahhahahaahahhahahahaha

  74. johnny damon September 12th, 2007 at 5:44 pm

    sox are superior

  75. murphydog September 12th, 2007 at 5:45 pm

I’m not an MLB manager either, but putting Matsui between two MVP candidates should get him some pitches to hit. According to CBSSPORTSLINE.com, Matsui’s 2 for 9 against Mcgowan with one HR. Maybe he’s only in tonight because Joe will rest him tomorrow night to spare his knees. In any event, he needs to find his swing sooner rather than later so I can understand putting him in there tonight.

  76. ray September 12th, 2007 at 5:45 pm

    JJ
In all due respect you just stooped down to this guy’s level and became just like him with your comments.

  77. murphydog September 12th, 2007 at 5:46 pm

    And don’t feed the trolls.

  78. Carmine September 12th, 2007 at 5:46 pm

I hope we can see Igawa get some work out of the bullpen. Maybe not in a tight situation straight away, but if there’s a comfortable lead, I think it’d be interesting to see how he responds.

  79. rbizzler September 12th, 2007 at 5:48 pm

Carmine, I think that Igawa needs some work IN the bullpen, not actually on the mound during the actual game. The Yankees currently have plenty of good options to explore and Kei is not one of them.

  80. Don V. September 12th, 2007 at 5:48 pm

Extremely random question…who wins in a foot race, Giambi or Posada?

    thoughts…

  81. S.o.S.27 September 12th, 2007 at 5:50 pm

    Giambi

    How about Posada or Molina?

  82. Alfred E. Neuman September 12th, 2007 at 5:50 pm

The mentality of a Red Sox fan is exceeded only by that of Alfred E. Neuman.

  83. Rebecca--Nothing Beats the Power of Optimism + Squirrel September 12th, 2007 at 5:50 pm

Vito: I give the edge to Giambi. He’s younger, and he looks like he’s in excellent shape

  84. Matt September 12th, 2007 at 5:51 pm

maybe Torre thinks putting Matsui in left can help him focus and get him out of his slump

  85. Rebecca--Nothing Beats the Power of Optimism + Squirrel September 12th, 2007 at 5:51 pm

SOS: That’s a tough one! Probably Posada, actually…

  86. Yanks fan in Austin September 12th, 2007 at 5:53 pm

    Carmine –
at least if Igawa pitches well there is little chance Torre will give him the ball in the playoffs.

Matsa ball will begin hitting in three weeks.

  87. Nick September 12th, 2007 at 5:56 pm

Only a week ago, Seattle was a major concern to the Yankees. A meltdown, schedule, overworked bullpen, and no days off have taken their toll with them.

  88. johnny damon September 12th, 2007 at 5:58 pm

i am very deeply feel sorry for you yankee fans because you are not winning the world series.and the bosox will win

  89. S.o.S.27 September 12th, 2007 at 5:58 pm

Id go with Molina. Posada makes an inside the park homerun a close play at second.

  90. saucy September 12th, 2007 at 5:58 pm

SOS ‘How about Posada or Molina?’

i don’t care who wins this one, just as long as their wearing penguin suits…

  91. Mark September 12th, 2007 at 6:02 pm

Hideki is the consummate professional player and teammate. His recent struggles are short term. His pride won’t allow anything else. When real crunch time arrives, he’ll be there.

  92. Rebecca--Nothing Beats the Power of Optimism + Squirrel September 12th, 2007 at 6:03 pm

Saucy: Why am I suddenly thinking of Mario Party?

  93. stuart September 12th, 2007 at 6:08 pm

    where is SJ44 lately?????

Interested to see what moose does, I am not too confident in his performance…

I guess Torre does not want Damon to spend to much time on the turf else I would play him in Left instead of Matsui…

  94. ray September 12th, 2007 at 6:09 pm

I think Matsui will be fine. I will confess that as a Red Sox fan I am always nervous when Matsui is up against us. He always seems to have the ability to have long at bats, wear the opposing pitcher down, and then to even hit a pitch for a base hit that is out of the strike zone. As a fan of an opposing team I think Matsui more than makes up for any temporary short comings with his hustle and his bat. My two cents worth!

  95. nate c. September 12th, 2007 at 6:11 pm

UPDATE, 6 p.m.: Shelley Duncan is on his way back from New York. He has a bone bruise on the left side of his pelvis and a small inguinal hernia. “It’s good news, Torre said.

    Duncan is day-to-day.

Peter – you just made my day.

  96. xryanx September 12th, 2007 at 6:11 pm

Matsui should not be starting in left field. His knees are not going to respond well to the turf in Toronto. Poor decision making by Joe but what else is new?

I hope they have Igawa on alert in the bullpen. Mussina is probably going to get creamed tonight. Rios, Glaus, Stairs, and Hill are going to tee off on him.

  97. rbizzler September 12th, 2007 at 6:12 pm

Agreed, not worrying about Zilla, he will rake in big spots (last night withstanding). Right now it is time to separate the pretenders/contenders for the post season rotation/bullpen.

  98. Rebecca--Nothing Beats the Power of Optimism + Squirrel September 12th, 2007 at 6:12 pm

Kind of off-topic, but I was reading an article that said the Rockies might look to deal Garrett Atkins for pitching this off-season and listed the Yankees as a possible suitor (I assume if A-Rod leaves). I think Atkins, unlike Matt Holliday who’s just phenomenal, is one of those guys who would fall a bit leaving Coors Field. I did some research and he has an overall OPS of .820, but only .747 on the road and a road batting average under .250. So, I dismissed right away the idea of that because you know the Rockies would want something good back for him considering he’s had back-to-back 100 RBI and 20 homerun seasons. But, that just brings me back to how impossible it’s going to be to replace A-Rod’s offense. Lowell’s the only good free agent third base option. We really need to find a way to keep A-Rod. Okay, I’m done.

what do you guys think shelly did when the doctor told him it was just a bruise?

Do you think he tore his arms off in celebration? Or maybe pushed him through a wall in excitement?

    *LATE BREAKING NOTES*

    *Rocket Repairs*

Roger Clemens revealed he had “definitely done something to” a ligament there, which caused the muscles in his forearm to lock up in his last start.

“The problem I had was once the muscle locked up. The doctor told me he saw on the MRI that the muscle was pretty nasty. That’s when I lost my control and that’s the thing that concerns me. I can’t be out there not knowing where the ball is going. They said I had to be careful of the forearm, there’s some bleeding in it.”

Clemens is also dealing with blisters on his right foot, the one he uses to push off the mound. Clemens said he is changing his spikes and socks and trying to stay out of the hot tub – which he needs for his elbow – so his foot “doesn’t get moist.”

Clemens said he felt no pain in the elbow after his bullpen session. “I felt like I had a piece of wood out there (against the Mariners on Labor Day).”

    *Pillow Talk*

Luis Vizcaino’s arm is fine, but he has a back problem. Vizcaino joins Posada as victims of Toronto hotel beds and ensuing soreness even though the Yankees switched hotels from their previous two trips. Posada came up with a severe stiff neck the last time the Yankees were in Canada.

*Shelley Duncan’s* hernia resulted from his famous wipe-out double play breakup against Toronto in August. “Evidently, it’s gotten progressively worse,” Torre said.

    *Shell Shocked*

Tim Wakefield was bombed by the D-Rays last nite, producing his shortest start in a decade. A panicked Terry Francona said. “We’ve got to get his confidence back, throwing that thing, attacking the strike zone.”

“I don’t know particularly how to do that, but I think John Farrell will spend a lot of time getting him back going where he feels confidence when he lets that ball go,” said the clueless Francona.

    *One Of Us*

New York Yankee infiltrator Eric Gagne pitched for the first time IN 16 days, giving up two hits and one run in the ninth. “I thought was very good,” said the crestfallen Francona.

    *Titanic Denial*

David Ortiz insists the team is not panicking like “last year.” “It’s not like that anymore,” said Big Papi, as he bailed water outta the listing life raft.

As for his injured right knee, Ortiz took medication Monday, though he declined to specify what kind, to ease the pain.

*Moose* will be making his first start against the Blue Jays this season, going 21-11 with a 3.38 ERA in 39 career outings.

*Dustin McGowan* (10-8, 3.90) gets the ball for Toronto, which has lost four straight contests. McGowan is looking for his third straight win. The righthander is 2-0 against the Yankees this season and has allowed three runs and 10 hits over his last 16 innings.

    *Ian Kennedy Lucks Out*

He has to postpone his wedding, which was scheduled for Oct 6th. (Dude, way to bail!)

When asked about the potential cancellation, manager Joe Torre said, “I didn’t get one of the invitations.”

  124. Mike NYY September 12th, 2007 at 7:15 pm

Moose could be a good situational guy out of the pen in the playoffs

He also could be a guy that could come in to pitch after Mo in any long extra inning playoff games.

It is a shame that he is now a “playoff mop up” guy but you can’t consider him for the playoff rotation. You just don’t know what you are going to get.

On another note, I am glad I didn’t start Lester on my fantasy team. 4 runs in the top of the first for Tampa

  166. Mike NYY September 12th, 2007 at 7:28 pm

Moose could be a good situational guy out of the pen in the playoffs

Moose can’t deal with pitching on 5 days rest instead of 6. How`s he going to handle pitching out of the bullpen?

  172. Michael T September 12th, 2007 at 7:29 pm

Best Team in BB will crawl out from under his rock as soon as the Sox slug their way back into the game. Like he did last night.

But, I’d be a little worried about the perfromance of the rotation recently because they won’t be scoring 10 runs against playoff teams.

Oh, we LOVE the HP umpire… that’s Jim Joyce.

Jim Joyce may be one of the worst ever, however he will have a spot in Monument Park upon his retirement.

Jim Joyce was the umpire on the RF foul line in the 1996 ALDS, when Derek Jeter hit a fly ball to Jeffrey Maier that was ruled a HR. That call has long been thought of as the turning point of that series.

    So, we LOVE Jim Joyce.

    NO IT WAS RICH GARCIA!!!

i hate when people get the facts wrong

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeffrey_Maier

On October 9, 1996, the Yankees trailed the Orioles 4-3 in the bottom of the eighth inning when shortstop Derek Jeter hit a deep fly ball to right field. Right fielder Tony Tarasco moved near the fence and appeared “to draw a bead on the ball” [2] when the then-12 year old Maier reached over the fence separating the stands and the field of play 9 feet below and deflected the ball into the stands. While baseball fans are permitted to catch (and keep) balls hit into the stands, if “a spectator reaches out of the stands, or goes on the playing field, and touches a live ball” [3] spectator interference is to be called.

Right field umpire Rich Garcia immediately ruled the play a home run, tying the game at 4-4, despite the protest of Tarasco and Orioles manager Davey Johnson. The Yankees would win the game in the eleventh inning on Bernie Williams’ walk-off home run.

  200. chad September 12th, 2007 at 7:38 pm

Ok, we all stand corrected. I love Rich Garcia, then. And I love Jim Joyce. The rhino in heat line made me chuckle out loud.

  201. Drewsd September 12th, 2007 at 7:38 pm

The thing about Moose is that he needs to realize that he is NOT a #1, 2 or even 3 starter! He is a solid 4 or 5 now…that means you have to change speeds like crazy, change arm angles, and be prepared to watch your strikeout stats disappear. No more challenging guys on the inside, etc. And if your manager benches you b/c you suck, then suck it up, shut your mouth, and be a good non-backstabbing teammate.

  202. Rebecca--Nothing Beats the Power of Optimism + Squirrel September 12th, 2007 at 7:39 pm

  205. chad September 12th, 2007 at 7:40 pm

Drewsd, you got it. He needs to do all of those things, plus change elevation, maybe even go Laredo once in awhile, anything to keep the hitters constantly adjusting their eye level and trying to pick up the ball. That’s what the aforementioned crafty old guys have done, and it’s worked pretty well.

I think Moose will do ok if he can keep the velocity up around 88-89. If he dips any lower than that though, get someone up in the pen. I’ll be very please with 5+ innings with 3 or fewer runs.

A swinging strikeout!! that has to be a good sign

    Thanks.

  249. Michael T September 12th, 2007 at 7:55 pm

Maybe now that Moose sux he will retaliate so that he can curry favor.

  250. Chicago Dave September 12th, 2007 at 7:56 pm

  251. whozat September 12th, 2007 at 7:56 pm

“I want Moose to take someone’s head off in the 5th – this hitting Jeter for fun crap has got to stop”

Yeah, because a free baserunner is exactly what a slumping pitcher should give his opponents.

We need wins, not to get into a pissing contest.

Jeter is seriously hurting man – he’s barely running the bases poor guy

  254. WangRules September 12th, 2007 at 7:57 pm

Wow, Jeter looked REALLY slow on that hit and run. It’s tough to watch the Captain grow old but I guess it happens to everyone. Good thing he can still hit .320

  257. Carmine September 12th, 2007 at 7:58 pm

I say crap on James Shields for not pitching tonight. I’d feel a lot better with him holding the Red Sox down than Daniel Cabrera in disguise.

  258. Rebecca--Nothing Beats the Power of Optimism + Squirrel September 12th, 2007 at 7:59 pm

Tampa got out of a bases loaded jam without giving up a run. WOW.

    C’MON YANKEES!

  259. mel September 12th, 2007 at 7:59 pm

Hinske just made the last out with bases loaded. Tampa 4-0.

  260. Chicago Dave September 12th, 2007 at 7:59 pm

So, how badly will the Rays get beat tonight? In other words, we all know they’re not going to hold their current 4-0 lead, and the game is likely to be a carbon copy of what happened last night…So what’s everyone’s guess on the final score?

  261. Spags September 12th, 2007 at 7:59 pm

Looks like the cap got hit again, huh?
    Sheesh.

  262. Helio September 12th, 2007 at 7:59 pm

It’s weird, the Blue Jays have the look and feel of a (poor) moneyball team -very few stars, almost all white and everything has to come together perfectly for them to win – however they spend lots of money.

  263. Bronx Born September 12th, 2007 at 7:59 pm

GreenTeaSucks – Wow what a brilliant move by Torre by keeping one of your best hitters in the lineup even though he’s slumping!

  272. Drewsd September 12th, 2007 at 8:02 pm

yeah – i’m pretty surprised by that inning too in Boston. Makes you really wonder about their lineup – I mean, it seriously sucks…but then again – the D-backs pitching certainly carried THAT lineup didn’t it?

By the way, besides the debacle with batting Arod 8th in the playoffs last year, I’d say that Torre has done an excellent job managing lineups and juggling players. The only problem I have with him is his or Cash-money’s devotion to Doug “POS” Mienkie-whatever and burning out every promising relief pitcher in sight

  273. Michael T September 12th, 2007 at 8:03 pm

Over on NESN they are excited that Manny has garced Fenway with his presence.

  279. Uncle Lukie September 12th, 2007 at 8:05 pm

    Richard C, according to MLB.com:

The “Pitch-f/x” value is currently defined as the measurement of the distance between the location of the actual pitch thrown over the plate, and the calculated location of a ball thrown by the pitcher in the same way, with no spin; this is the value we provided in Enhanced Gameday last season as “Break”. The new Break value, which we feel is more appropriate for the common understanding of the term, is defined as the measurement of the greatest distance between the trajectory of the pitch at any point between the release point and the front of home plate, and the straight line path from the release point and the front of home plate. By this definition, a Barry Zito curveball will have a much greater Break value than a Brad Penny fastball.

    Chicago Dave,
Tampa’s pitching obviously sucks. However, in the minors Tampa has a threesome that is pretty fearsome. David Price, Jacob Mcgee(a nasty lefty) and Wade Davis are all really really good pitching prospects. I know it was you always hear regarding Tampa, but just give them time. Plus they have Longoria and Breignac as the future left side of their infield.

  303. Luthien September 12th, 2007 at 8:10 pm

Ya, with the Gameday strike zone box I assume they took it out because they didnt want to show up the umpires or something. It noticed it missing maybe a week or so ago. Just a guess.

  350. Chicago Dave September 12th, 2007 at 8:21 pm

Apparently the Blue Jays still have some ill will toward the Yankees…

Then again, they have a pugnacious drunk for a manager…Should we really be surprised?

  351. Drewsd September 12th, 2007 at 8:22 pm

LET’S GO YANKEES (and Devil Rays)

  352. Motown Yankee Fan September 12th, 2007 at 8:22 pm

I sense the soft underbelly of the Toronto bullpen coming soon.

  353. dontfirecash September 12th, 2007 at 8:22 pm

    Gaawwwd Tampa sucks balls.

  354. Michael T September 12th, 2007 at 8:22 pm

    mel-

4-3 Tampa? Time to queue up “Best Team in BB” for some trolling.

  355. Carmine September 12th, 2007 at 8:22 pm

Mike Pagliarulo has a very (un)interesting analysis of the Devil Rays franchise and their inability to produce talented pitchers. It’s very innovative.

  356. Nick in SF September 12th, 2007 at 8:23 pm

Tampa Bay up 4-0 felt like a tie game. 4-3 feels like they’re already down a couple. Ugh. We need to put up more runs for that Boston scoreboard.

  357. Phil September 12th, 2007 at 8:24 pm

Carmine: do you have a link for Pags’ analysis?

  358. Chicago Dave September 12th, 2007 at 8:25 pm

    Carmine -

What does Pags have to say? (He’s a complete idiot, of course, but I’m still curious what his “analysis” was!)

    Let’s go YANKEES!

  361. Michael T September 12th, 2007 at 8:26 pm

Melky has really been a POS lately.

OBP-ing .286 in Sep with a .300 OBP to boot.

  362. mel September 12th, 2007 at 8:26 pm

Well, at least we got a couple. Only 3 hits, but PC is up to 85 so we won’t have to face him too much longer.

  364. dontfirecash September 12th, 2007 at 8:26 pm

Maybe we should try some of this optimism shiz on a TB blog. Oh wait, TB doesn’t have any blogs.

  365. Drewsd September 12th, 2007 at 8:27 pm

Wow – jackson just struck out two to escape the 3rd in Boston….pretty impressive

  369. xryanx September 12th, 2007 at 8:28 pm

Impressive? He gave up a single to Lugo, walked Pedroia, gave up a moon shot to Ortiz, and a double to JD Drew.

  370. sebastian September 12th, 2007 at 8:29 pm

    Just a thought
    Red Sox loose today
    Yankees win today and tomorrow
Red Sox would lead the division by 3.5 games with 3 games remaining against the Yankees.
I guess its a lot to hope for a Yankees sweep but if they manage 2 out of 3 the lead would be just 2.5 games and if they sweep it would be .5 games.
Sounds cool he Yanks can take the division by winning 4 in a row and with Kenedy Pettit Wang and Clemens it may not be such a longshot

  371. Rebecca--Nothing Beats the Power of Optimism + Squirrel September 12th, 2007 at 8:29 pm

Micheal T: You know what happens when we start complaining about people on this blog, right? :-D

LET’S GO YANKEES! C’MON MOOSE! YOU CAN DO IT!

  372. Chicago Dave September 12th, 2007 at 8:29 pm

OK, that has to be Adam White’s (whoever he is!) writing. There is no way Pags would be quoting Newton’s Third Law!

  373. Michael T September 12th, 2007 at 8:29 pm

Tampa Bay’s “fan” base consists of Yankees fans when they play the Bosox. And vice versa.

  374. Carmine September 12th, 2007 at 8:30 pm

    Chicago Dave:

He basically says they don’t have the money to compete with their rivals, ergo they have less risk in taking chances so they need to take those chances, build a core talent pool, yada yada, etc. etc. All new ideas.

  375. Michael T September 12th, 2007 at 8:31 pm

    rebecca-

You are on to me. I worked the magic on Matsui this afternoon.

But it doesn’t seem to work when we complain about the DRays. They just get suckier.

  376. Josh September 12th, 2007 at 8:31 pm

Pete you have no idea. The real problem is Rogers pretty much has a monopoly on Internet, Cable, and Phone throughout the Greater Toronto Area. Their service is horrible and the only thing worse would be there pricing.

Anyone of you guys have an iPhone? When it comes to Canada, under Rogers current pricing scheme it would cost someone around $395.00 a month for the same plan that’s offered in the USA for 59.95 a month. Talk about ridiculous.

  377. dontfirecash September 12th, 2007 at 8:31 pm

If fuc*in’ Tampa Bay didn’t suck so much, the Yanks could have been two out in the loss column, assuming they win today.

  378. nate c. September 12th, 2007 at 8:32 pm

anyone watching the game – does moose seem sharp? I mean, obviously he’s getting outs – but does he seem to have good command ie. are a lot of borderline pitches being called for balls?

  379. jennifer September 12th, 2007 at 8:32 pm

    evening all.

Wow this crowd is clueless on fly balls. I’ve counted at least twice where they cheered like it was a homerun, and it was well short of the wall.

  380. Carmine September 12th, 2007 at 8:32 pm

Ken Singleton should teach baseball history. He has a lot of interesting stories.

  381. jennifer September 12th, 2007 at 8:33 pm

Yeah Mike seems pretty sharp. Looks good so far.

  382. Michael T September 12th, 2007 at 8:33 pm

    Rebecca-

You are on to me. I worked the trick on Matsui earlier this afternoon.

Doesn’t work ehn we complain about the DRays though. They just get suckier.

  383. Phil September 12th, 2007 at 8:34 pm

    Hell yeah, Moose!!!

  384. nate c. September 12th, 2007 at 8:34 pm

  387. Carmine September 12th, 2007 at 8:34 pm

    nate c:

His curve definitely looks very sharp tonight which is always a good sign for him. Good movement and he’s spotting it well and throwing it effectively.

  388. Scooter September 12th, 2007 at 8:35 pm

“If fuc*in’ Tampa Bay didn’t suck so much, the Yanks could have been two out in the loss column, assuming they win today.”

Or the Yanks could have won the games they just lost to Tampa on nights when Boston lost as well. But whatever…

  389. Chicago Dave September 12th, 2007 at 8:35 pm

dontfirecash – Remember that we have gotten to beat up on Tampa as well… It’s just unfortunate that, due the vagaries of MLB scheduling, T-Bay is playing Boston now (when we would really rather see them playing a good team so that we might have a shot to make up some ground!).

  390. Cumberberg September 12th, 2007 at 8:35 pm

Moose is giving a helluva lot more than I thought we were going to get out of him tonight. Thanks big guy.

  391. Catya September 12th, 2007 at 8:35 pm

    I wanna be like mike!!!!!

  392. Josh September 12th, 2007 at 8:36 pm

    Jennifer,

The crowd isn’t clueless, every ball hit high looks like it could go over the wall.

  393. jennifer September 12th, 2007 at 8:36 pm

Like Kenny or Joe said, maybe the long lay off gave Mike time to think about what he was doing wrong. As opposed to going out there every 5 days and having it snowball.

  394. eric September 12th, 2007 at 8:36 pm

    McLovin:
I haven’t seen him hit any higher than 90 on YES but he has been throwing a tad harder than that 86 mph junk.

  395. jennifer September 12th, 2007 at 8:37 pm

The crowds can be clueless. Even at Yankee stadium they stand up and cheer fly outs.

  396. dontfirecash September 12th, 2007 at 8:37 pm

True, I did forget that the Yankees managed to lose two out of three to the Rays. How exactly did they manage to do that?

  397. Josh September 12th, 2007 at 8:38 pm

On a sidenote, you can sit front row at a Blue Jays game for under $20 if you buy off the street before the game. What would that kind of ticket go for in New York on any given day?

  398. dontfirecash September 12th, 2007 at 8:38 pm

You gotta admit though, last night kind of hurt; I mean they were up 8-1 for crying out loud.

  399. -. . --. .- - .. ...- .. - -.-- .-. ..- .-.. . ... September 12th, 2007 at 8:38 pm

  400. Chicago Dave September 12th, 2007 at 8:39 pm

Somehow they have to get Jeter more rest. Even if they have to tie him to the bench!

  401. Mark September 12th, 2007 at 8:39 pm

Every inning that Mussina keeps the bullpen inactive is a plus. Keep Joba and Mo in tune tonight or tomorrow for work in Boston.

  402. Cumberberg September 12th, 2007 at 8:40 pm

Tavarez in now for the fourth. Two on, two out.

  403. -. . --. .- - .. ...- .. - -.-- .-. ..- .-.. . ... September 12th, 2007 at 8:40 pm

    Tally for tonight –

    MVP Ordonez — 3-run homer.
    A-Rod — 0

  404. Carmine September 12th, 2007 at 8:41 pm

Someone compared Jeter to the Black Knight from Monty Python and the Holy Grail last night…classic.

  405. Chicago Dave September 12th, 2007 at 8:42 pm

If the Yanks beat out Detroit for the Wild Card, there is no way Ordonez will win the MVP…No chance!!

  413. Jim Clark September 12th, 2007 at 8:45 pm

  430. Chicago Dave September 12th, 2007 at 8:49 pm

Gameday had that last pitch at 92mph. Thank God Mike is back into the nineties! I think he’ll be OK if he can maintain that kind of velocity, as it will make his offspeed pitches effective once again.

  431. Motown Yankee Fan September 12th, 2007 at 8:50 pm

  440. Carmine September 12th, 2007 at 8:55 pm

In all honesty, if the Devil Rays get a good pitching performance, they can hang with just about any team. The problem for them is they usually don’t get good pitching performances, but they’ve been getting some of those lately.

  441. Ansky174 September 12th, 2007 at 8:56 pm

    Eight Yankee k’s tonight…..and 3 hits?

  442. Paddy R September 12th, 2007 at 8:56 pm

pete i think you are right about building matsui’s confidence, but my main concern, and i think a lot of us commenting on the topic, is not that matsui couldn’t/wouldn’t hit again, but that he wasn’t because of injury/fatigue. i didn’t want matsui to get a day off because of his lack of production recently, but because i thought getting a little juice back in the legs would help him start producing again.

then again, what do i know. maybe he really is totally healthy, was just going through a rough stretch with the stick, and needed to fight through it. in that case, joe was right on the money, like you said.

Youkilis is screaming and carrying on with the 1st base umpire, arguing about a called strike, and he didn’t get tossed out.

can you imagine – double standard!

In the 11:00 pm Detroit game, jorge can run out for merely muttering under his breath about an outrageous call.

    5? 10? 20? 30? More?

To go from now through the end of a winning October (assuming a semi-quick hook by Mr Joe) he might need as many as 40.

  477. jennifer September 12th, 2007 at 9:12 pm

  479. BBB September 12th, 2007 at 9:13 pm

  483. Chicago Dave September 12th, 2007 at 9:13 pm

Phew…That was a close one! Go Yanks!!!

  484. Cumberberg September 12th, 2007 at 9:13 pm

Anyone else like the fact that Youklis compares himself and his passion on the field to Paul O’Neill? Maybe I have selective memory but I remember Paulie beating the sh!t out of the water cooler and getting pissed at himself, not whining to the ump after every call that didn’t go his way or after every time an opposing player looked at him cross-eyed.

  485. Rebecca--Nothing Beats the Power of Optimism + Squirrel September 12th, 2007 at 9:13 pm

  489. jennifer September 12th, 2007 at 9:14 pm

Joe asked Mike, Mike must not have said YEAH I want to stay in. So Joe pulled the hook on him.

  490. Nick in SF September 12th, 2007 at 9:14 pm

That was scary. I think Torre wanted to get Moose out before he had a chance to get the tie run to the plate.

  491. BBB September 12th, 2007 at 9:14 pm

Thank you Edwar! MAN that was nervewracking!

Meanwhile, great outing by the Moose!!

  492. Ansky174 September 12th, 2007 at 9:14 pm

    We’re outta that mess…………Now let’s hit

  493. Ranting Guy September 12th, 2007 at 9:15 pm

Drewsd – Nice description of Edwar! We at the “Empire” now have Joba D. Hutt and Yoda’s love child!

I realize I’m going way back to one of the first threads when he first pitched, but I like calling him Yoda rather than the usual “Initial (dash) First Syllable” tripe everyone seems to get now.

  494. Drewsd September 12th, 2007 at 9:15 pm

Chicago Dave…Torre is trying to break the record of how many days does it take to burn out a reliever with Edwar….I’d say he has a great chance

  495. Dr. Acula September 12th, 2007 at 9:15 pm

_What did Mike just say to Roger?_

“Rog, I told ya, your arm is stiff, cuz you’re using too much viagra.”

  496. Chicago Dave September 12th, 2007 at 9:15 pm

That’s kind of weak if Mussina said he was done at 87 pitches…

  497. Scooter September 12th, 2007 at 9:15 pm

    CHOCOLATE RAIN!!!!!!!!

  498. Kill-Schill(ing) September 12th, 2007 at 9:16 pm

I thought for sure that sounded like an extra-base hit or homerun off the bat.

Edwar didn’t look very sharp tonight. If he doesn’t pitch ahead of hitters, he becomes vulnerable.

Still, he deserves plaudits for extricating the Yankees from Mussina’s mess.

  499. Carmine September 12th, 2007 at 9:16 pm

5.2 scoreless from Mussina. Not the absolute ideal, but only one out short of 6 scoreless. I’m sure Joe wanted to get him out on a positive vibe. Definitely a good performance.

  500. Shirley September 12th, 2007 at 9:16 pm

Edwar got the job done, but with so many pitchers in the bull pen, why went for Edwar, who pitched two innings already yesterday?

  501. Carmine September 12th, 2007 at 9:17 pm

Edwar also threw 31 pitches last night. I figured he wouldn’t be available today.

  502. Chicago Dave September 12th, 2007 at 9:17 pm

Scott Downs is actually a good reliever…If only Tampa had him right now! (Then they might actually hold that lead against Boston…sigh…)

  503. I love Joba September 12th, 2007 at 9:17 pm

Chicago Dave, not really considering he hasn’t started a game in a couple of weeks.

  504. jennifer September 12th, 2007 at 9:18 pm

Oh come on don’t forget he hasn’t pitched in a long time.

  505. Drewsd September 12th, 2007 at 9:18 pm

Shirley – see my post above

  506. Scooter September 12th, 2007 at 9:18 pm

Let’s see if we can end this game with more hits than the Jays.

  507. I love Joba September 12th, 2007 at 9:18 pm

If we use Joba, I really hope it’s only for 1 inning so he can pitch 2x against the Sox.

  508. Chicago Dave September 12th, 2007 at 9:18 pm

Is anyone warming up for the Yanks now? They can’t throw Edwar out there for the bottom of the inning, can they?!

  509. Dr. Acula September 12th, 2007 at 9:19 pm

    Dave-

this hasn’t been Moose’s year. he’s only gone over 90 pitches a couple of times this year.

  510. jennifer September 12th, 2007 at 9:19 pm

    Joba for 2? Than Mo?

  511. -. . --. .- - .. ...- .. - -.-- .-. ..- .-.. . ... September 12th, 2007 at 9:19 pm

If we had Scott Downs, we would be 5 ahead of Red SOS.

  512. Keith September 12th, 2007 at 9:19 pm

More than would have been imagined from Mussina. A bonus. There might be serviceable innings left in the ole boy.

  513. Carmine September 12th, 2007 at 9:20 pm

I think Joe definitely wants Joba available for 2 games against the Red Sox. I’d say the Farnsworth+Joba combo, then play the 9th by ear depending on the score then.

  514. Brandon September 12th, 2007 at 9:20 pm

I notice people saying Edwar didn’t look sharp , think about it even w/ K-Ram not being sharp he gets out of a bases loaded situation w/o allowing a run & a 2 out situation to boot. How many of our pitchers have done this ?

Point is he got the job done.

  515. Kill-Schill(ing) September 12th, 2007 at 9:21 pm

So what are the odds Mussina starts on Monday against the Orioles? Anyone?

This year against the O’s, Moose is 1-2 with a 4.32 ERA in 25 innings and a 1.12 WHIP.

  516. Chicago Dave September 12th, 2007 at 9:21 pm

Come on, Jetes…Don’t take another collar tonight!!!

  517. jennifer September 12th, 2007 at 9:21 pm

    So than Kyle, Joba, Mo.

  518. SJ44 September 12th, 2007 at 9:22 pm

Torre looked Moose right in the eye, giving him the option of staying in, and Moose said he was done.

I don’t have a problem with it because he was being honest and he had to be a bit spent.

This is his first start in a few weeks. Its tough to ramp up and have 100+ pitches in you after that type of layoff.

Add in the emotion of the night, he was pretty animated all night, and its not surprising he was spent.

This was a huge start for Moose and the team.

We don’t know how many pitches Clemens has left this season. Its nice he is trying to gut it out but, let’s be honest. He has ligament damage in his elbow. He is on borrowed time.

Its awfully tough to depend on Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy to compromise half your playoff rotation and expect positive results.

If Moose can give them anything close to what he gave them tonight, it gives them another option for the rotation.

At this point of the year, you take whomever you can take that can help you win games. Regardless of past failures.

Its definitely a start Moose can build on. He has to feel good about his performance tonight.

  519. Carmine September 12th, 2007 at 9:23 pm

Again, Edwar pitched 2 innings last night for 31 pitches. Not entirely bizarre for him not to be “sharp” tonight.

  520. Motown Yankee Fan September 12th, 2007 at 9:23 pm

Cumberberg – good call on the O’Neill comparison. That really annoyed me when grossface compared himself to him. I don’t recall him running out of the baseline, whining, etc. Also, Youk noted that his Yankeeography runs daily. How does he know that?

  521. Chicago Dave September 12th, 2007 at 9:23 pm

Edwin Jackson made it through 6, but he’s now over 100 pitches. I have to think Boston will be seeing Tampa’s bullpen starting next inning…

  522. Rebecca--Nothing Beats the Power of Optimism + Squirrel September 12th, 2007 at 9:24 pm

    Tampa still holding on!

    C’MON YANKEES! C’MON TAMPA!

  523. jennifer September 12th, 2007 at 9:26 pm

I was driving back from Maine with my friend, she was reading the article to me, I almost drove off the road when she said he compared himself to Paulie!

And how funny he says that Yes runs Paul O’niell Yankeeography everyday. He must have his tv tuned to Yes.

  524. Vader September 12th, 2007 at 9:26 pm

I’m dealing with my worst nightmare, I’m on a job in New Hampshire, I can get 880 in the car, but not in my hotel room. So, I’m left to listen to Steve Phillips call the Mets vs Braves on ESPN or watch the Sawx. Ahhhhhhh!!!!!

  525. Kill-Schill(ing) September 12th, 2007 at 9:26 pm

Edwar deserves kudos for retiring the side without yielding a run, but he also merits a mild rebuke for walking his first batter.

Were Viz healthy, I’m quite sure Joe would have forsaken Edwar and used Viz instead.

Don’t get me wrong, I have tremendous admiration for Edwar’s perseverance but he still makes me skittish, albeit so does every Yankee bullpen arm except joba and mo.

  526. jennifer September 12th, 2007 at 9:26 pm

    Here comes Joba!!

  527. Brandon September 12th, 2007 at 9:27 pm

Again, Edwar pitched 2 innings last night for 31 pitches. Not entirely bizarre for him not to be “sharp tonight.

    ——————————————————

Carmine, if anything it tells us how useful he can be day to day. The correct move tonight would be Joba 7th, Ohlendorf 8th & 9th to test him up here

  528. Cumberberg September 12th, 2007 at 9:27 pm

Motown/Jennifer — So what if we’re running Paulie’s Yankeeography daily? Who the f*ck is Youklis to complain about it?

  529. Rebecca--Nothing Beats the Power of Optimism + Squirrel September 12th, 2007 at 9:28 pm

  534. Matt September 12th, 2007 at 9:29 pm

i hope that you’re wrong with that prediction Pete…that would be misplaced trust by Joe in Moose… he’ll get the win and he pitched decently, but its still a crap shoot with him. id much rather go with hughes or kennedy.

  535. jennifer September 12th, 2007 at 9:29 pm

Dr. Hopefully he crashed it into a players car.

  537. Carmine September 12th, 2007 at 9:31 pm

  561. SJ44 September 12th, 2007 at 9:38 pm

    Pete,

I disagree. I think Moose will be the Game 3 starter.

I don’t see how Clemens will hold up with ligament damage in his elbow.

I hope he can but, realistically, its a lot to ask of a 45 yr old guy, despite the cortizone shots.

Either way, Moose is going to pitch in the post-season. Especially if he can build on what we saw tonight.

  562. Motown Yankee Fan September 12th, 2007 at 9:39 pm

The whole Yankeeography comment makes me think Youk has a bit of an inferiority complex about Yankees, etc. He’ll never be as good, or as beloved as O’Neill, and deep down inside, he’s gotta know that.

  563. Chicago Dave September 12th, 2007 at 9:39 pm

He will get the chances. Perhaps as early as next Monday against the Orioles.

I don’t see the Yankees bypassing Moose, even if it means they go to a 6 man rotation for a week.

JMO but, I think they are going to give him a big look down the stretch because I don’t think they really believe Clemens can hold up. They will need him if that’s the case.

Big night in Trenton. They come back from 2 down with a run in the 8th and the winning run in the bottom of the 9th to win 3-2 over Akron.

They now have a 2-0 lead in the Best of 7 for the Eastern League Championship.

The Gulf Coast Yankees won their championship. If Trenton wins two more games, it will be the first time in a long time the Yankees have had two minor league teams win championships in the same season.

  595. Carmine September 12th, 2007 at 9:49 pm

I always wondered how people who were naturally right-handed decided to bat left-handed as children. Ken Singleton was just talking about how he originally batted lefty as a kid, but then tried the switch hitting thing. Matsui’s a natural righty too, though why he started batting lefty is a pretty awesome story. I’m naturally righty and could never ever picture myself comfortably batting left-handed.

all dhat dough down da drain.

  602. Drewsd September 12th, 2007 at 9:51 pm

WHY WOULD YOU BRING IN JOBA FOR TWO?? Don’t you want him there in Boston for at least two games????

  603. I love Joba September 12th, 2007 at 9:51 pm

Why is Joba pitching a second inning?

  604. CUYanks September 12th, 2007 at 9:51 pm

I sense we are seeing the outing before the first bending of the Joba Rules. I bet Joba will be available Friday

  605. migames September 12th, 2007 at 9:51 pm

and there it is, the hardest ball hit against joba

  606. BBB September 12th, 2007 at 9:52 pm

Yeah, I don’t understand why they wouldn’t pitch Farns here so Joba is available on Friday.

  607. BBB September 12th, 2007 at 9:53 pm

    K!!

  608. Uncle Vito September 12th, 2007 at 9:55 pm

RIGHT NOW…JOBA…PLUNK THIS JERK !!! DO IT !!!

  609. Rebecca--Nothing Beats the Power of Optimism + Squirrel September 12th, 2007 at 9:55 pm

C’mon Joba! YOU CAN DO THIS!

    LET’S GO YANKEES!

  610. Uncle Vito September 12th, 2007 at 9:56 pm

…did that 3rd pitch back Porky Pig off the plate ?

  611. Dimitri September 12th, 2007 at 9:56 pm

I’m as pro-Torre as anyone can be but why is Joba pitching a second inning? Now he can’t pitch until Saturday, meaning he can only pitch once against Boston this weekend. We have a 4 run lead. If it was 2, I can understand.

  612. Uncle Vito September 12th, 2007 at 9:56 pm

    STAIRS IS GOING DOWN !!! ( get it?..like downstairs…)

  613. mel September 12th, 2007 at 9:57 pm

Let’s go Joba!!! One more out!

  614. Uncle Vito September 12th, 2007 at 9:58 pm

See…if your gonna walk him anyway, you may as well break a couple of ribs….right ? ( totally joking, of course…Matt Stairs is a stand up dude, cough, cough….right ? )

  615. Dr. Acula September 12th, 2007 at 9:58 pm

I think toronto is picking off our signs.

  616. migames September 12th, 2007 at 9:58 pm

is jaba saying to jorge “who was that guy with the moustache that talks like james carville?”

  617. DMan September 12th, 2007 at 9:58 pm

    Vito-

    Hah.

Come on Joba! Lets do this!

  618. Uncle Vito September 12th, 2007 at 9:59 pm

Don’t worry they will start bending the Joba Rules..if we need him…he’ll pitch one on Friday and one on Sunday….mark my words….you watch…

  619. Uncle Vito September 12th, 2007 at 9:59 pm

    STRIKE THREE !!!

  620. helno51 September 12th, 2007 at 9:59 pm

why is joba being asked to throw 30+ when we play boston in a crucial series on friday? give joe credit he will sabotage anything he can with this pen. and moose better keep pitching good if joe wants to use him in game 4 or the only good thing about game 4 will be when joe realizes that his stupidly using moose cost him his job.

  621. Paolo September 12th, 2007 at 9:59 pm

    One more strike please…

  622. I love Joba September 12th, 2007 at 9:59 pm

Jesus I hope we score some runs in the top of the 9th so Rivera doesn’t have to be used.

  623. Spags September 12th, 2007 at 9:59 pm

Vito- I really dont think so.

  624. Vader September 12th, 2007 at 9:59 pm

They are stretching him out, the Joba rules are an evolving set of rules.

  625. DMan September 12th, 2007 at 9:59 pm

Wicked curve by Joba on that 2-1 pitch. Wow

  626. Paolo September 12th, 2007 at 10:00 pm

    Here it comes…

  627. Dr. Acula September 12th, 2007 at 10:01 pm

    Jabba rules just changed.

well, it acutally started two weeks ago, when the brought him out to pitch a 2nd inning against the sox. But he pitched two against KC, and two today, cuz they want to stretch him for Boston games and for the playoffs.

we can turn those games in 5 inning contests. Starter to 5, edwar/viz in the 6th, Jabba in 7th/8th, then Mo.

so expect to Jabba ready for Boston on Friday.

  628. Spags September 12th, 2007 at 10:01 pm

Hows about that wicked Slider for the k?

  629. ansky September 12th, 2007 at 10:01 pm

    what the…

  630. Rebecca--Nothing Beats the Power of Optimism + Squirrel September 12th, 2007 at 10:01 pm

No worries, it’s an unearned run.

  631. Paolo September 12th, 2007 at 10:01 pm

    shacks!!!

  632. Uncle Vito September 12th, 2007 at 10:01 pm

35th pitch….here’s the very last one he can throw…according to the manual !~

  633. YanksFanLV September 12th, 2007 at 10:02 pm

Well we knew it had to be coming sometime.

  634. migames September 12th, 2007 at 10:02 pm

    crap

  635. DMan September 12th, 2007 at 10:02 pm

    Ahhhhhhh! Unearned run =\

  636. Global Warming September 12th, 2007 at 10:02 pm

Peter and co your wrong about Mussina being the 4th starter in “any” series.

In the ALDS the Yankees will only use 3 pitchers. That’s Wang, Pettitte, and Clemens.

MLB has added extra off days to make it so teams can you use their top 3 Starters in a 5 man series with normal rest.

So……..people need to cool it on Mike Mussina who deserves some nice credit for pitching a nice game.

  637. Brandon September 12th, 2007 at 10:02 pm

I’m actually glad that happened he needed to get scored on ..

  638. Uncle Vito September 12th, 2007 at 10:02 pm

    what the HALE happened ?

  639. helno51 September 12th, 2007 at 10:02 pm

and to top off the night joe will use mo for 4 outs. i mean you cant do a worse job

  640. Spags September 12th, 2007 at 10:02 pm

    what happened? :-0

  641. Carmine September 12th, 2007 at 10:02 pm

    Yuck…inning should be over.

  642. DMan September 12th, 2007 at 10:03 pm

Ya that clearly shouldn’t count towards Joba.

Well, glad they’re taking Joba out.. Hes thrown enough.

  643. Limey Yankee September 12th, 2007 at 10:03 pm

    yeah that’s charged to a-rod

  644. I love Joba September 12th, 2007 at 10:03 pm

well its unearned so the streak really isn’t over.

  645. mel September 12th, 2007 at 10:03 pm

Still has an ERA of 0. Let’s go Mo.

  646. Uncle Vito September 12th, 2007 at 10:04 pm

totally OK…Mo gets the 4 out save, no need for him tomorrow as we win that game 10-1….and we are ready then to INVADE FENWAY !!!

  647. SJ44 September 12th, 2007 at 10:04 pm

    Gotta make that play.

You hate having to burn Mo for a two inning outing.

Joba wasn’t at his best but, he made the pitch to end the inning.

A bad error. Let’s hope it doesn’t start a rally.

  648. Vader September 12th, 2007 at 10:04 pm

Did someone see the error, was it a wide throw or something else?

  649. sunny615 September 12th, 2007 at 10:04 pm

    unearned run… still 0.00

  650. Rebecca--Nothing Beats the Power of Optimism + Squirrel September 12th, 2007 at 10:04 pm

Dude, guys, a run scores, yeah, but: It’s an UNEARNED run. Yankees are still up.

Don’t worry, Joba will be fine. He is, Joba, after all!

  651. Carmine September 12th, 2007 at 10:05 pm

Wide throw by A-Rod. Doug tried to save it, but too wide.

  652. Spags September 12th, 2007 at 10:05 pm

    Nice Optomism Uncle Vito!

  653. harold September 12th, 2007 at 10:05 pm

mientkewitz shoulda tagged the runner when he inexplicably rounded 1st after touching the bag, hes in play there. awful awareness on his part

  654. Winfield killed my seagull September 12th, 2007 at 10:05 pm

must be saving kyle and RossO fer temarra

  655. Mike September 12th, 2007 at 10:06 pm

Should have been Igawa Time in the 7th, Joba in the eighth, and then another kid from SWB in the 9th. :/

  656. Carmine September 12th, 2007 at 10:06 pm

I’d rather Joba give up a run in a game where we lead by a few. He was statistically bound to give up a run at some point.

  657. Uncle Vito September 12th, 2007 at 10:06 pm

Boston down to its last 5 outs…Crunchy Bran at bat with an 0-2 count and nobody on….

  658. The Joba Chamberlain Experience September 12th, 2007 at 10:07 pm

If Matt Stairs scores, its charged to Joba. Come on Rivera

  659. Rebecca--Nothing Beats the Power of Optimism + Squirrel September 12th, 2007 at 10:07 pm

    C’mon guys….Optimism…we can do this!

  660. DMan September 12th, 2007 at 10:07 pm

Yah its ok. The Yankees realized that all this winning was probably making us kind of bored, so they figured, here, we’ll make it a 3 run game and you can see MO get a save. Enjoy.

    See?

  661. sunny615 September 12th, 2007 at 10:07 pm

ugh – it’s the never ending inning

  662. Vader September 12th, 2007 at 10:07 pm

    Thanks

  663. Master Shake September 12th, 2007 at 10:07 pm

So Joe effectively eliminated Joba from 2 games of the Red Sox series by pitching him 2 innings tonight with a 4 run lead and Farnsworth available. Unreal. And I don’t want to hear this “the Joba rules are about to change” defense. It’s nothing but speculation based on a George King article.

  664. ansky September 12th, 2007 at 10:08 pm

a lot of nervous 2 out action going on here.

  665. migames September 12th, 2007 at 10:08 pm

    what is happening?!

  666. eastside dave September 12th, 2007 at 10:08 pm

why didn’t minky tag the runner when he took the turn?????????

  667. Carmine September 12th, 2007 at 10:08 pm

Won’t Stairs still be unearned since A-Rod’s play should have ended the inning? Unearned runs confuse me sometimes.

  668. Dr. Acula September 12th, 2007 at 10:08 pm

    Carmine-

they ruled the last hit an error on ARod. The run that scored was unearned. Jabba’ ERA is still zero, point, zero zero.

  669. Jeff NJ September 12th, 2007 at 10:08 pm

Global Warming, only one of the two ALDS’s have the extra day off. The other one would require 4 starters unless you want Wang to go on short rest. The team with the top seed gets to decide which series they want.

  670. Uncle Vito September 12th, 2007 at 10:09 pm

in Boston, Crunchy Bran strikes out…4 outs to go there too…

  671. Carmine September 12th, 2007 at 10:09 pm

Right, but still his first run at all. I just meant nothing against him.

  672. kyuzo September 12th, 2007 at 10:09 pm

Too much babying. Joba has more than earned the right to finish his business and get that 3rd out.

  673. ansky September 12th, 2007 at 10:09 pm

    niiiiicccccceeeeee

  674. Rebecca--Nothing Beats the Power of Optimism + Squirrel September 12th, 2007 at 10:09 pm

    C’MON YANKS! LET’S DO THIS!

TAMPA STILL UP! TWO OUT IN THE EIGHTH!

  675. mel September 12th, 2007 at 10:09 pm

    Whoo! That was close.

  676. Jeff NJ September 12th, 2007 at 10:09 pm

ALso the Joba rules have changed, even though he pitched almost 2 tonight, he can still pitch on Friday, just not back to back days.

  677. Uncle Vito September 12th, 2007 at 10:09 pm

    Sah-weet MO !!!

  678. DMan September 12th, 2007 at 10:09 pm

  680. MGW September 12th, 2007 at 10:10 pm

Man, what a beautiful ending to that inning!

  681. dontfirecash September 12th, 2007 at 10:10 pm

We should really trade the bum A-rod for allowing a run to score.

  682. EY September 12th, 2007 at 10:10 pm

Mo always gets the out when we need it. and Joba still stands at 0.00 ERA. Nice!!

  683. Mike September 12th, 2007 at 10:10 pm

    Inning over.

I expect a tack-on run and then Mo finishing up for his 26th(?) save.

  684. Shirley September 12th, 2007 at 10:10 pm

Yes! Strikeout! We can always count on Mo!

  685. SJ44 September 12th, 2007 at 10:11 pm

How can you depend on a guy pitching with ligament damage in his elbow?

At best, its wait and see. If he’s hurt, Phil Hughes isn’t pitching Game 3 of a 5 game series. Mike Mussina will unless he falls off the map again.

If Clemens can pitch effectively, obviously its a non-issue. However, that’s a big question mark right now.

  686. sunny615 September 12th, 2007 at 10:11 pm

    an insurance run please

  687. Brandon September 12th, 2007 at 10:11 pm

stop the madness Joba gives up a run , OMG I rather would see his first ER come in the playoffs then in a meaningless inning … jesus people this is the type of stuff I can’t stand, if anything applaud Arod what he did could be what makes Joba in his next relief appearance shake off a run scored

  688. migames September 12th, 2007 at 10:11 pm

to those who are bitching about using joba for two innings and taking him out of the boston series, we need to win this game. Joba is the best option to pitch the 8th inning. We worry about boston when we play boston, right now, we need to win this game. I think pitching Joba in the 8th inning is a good idea

  689. Dr. Acula September 12th, 2007 at 10:12 pm

one, two, three 8th in Baaston.

  690. Spags September 12th, 2007 at 10:12 pm

    whats the boston score?

  691. KurticusMaximus September 12th, 2007 at 10:12 pm

Well, that wasn’t a very enjoyable inning, but all is well now.

Joba probably needs to see extra pitches like this. He’s gonna have to be a big part of October if NY makes it, and he’s gonna have to pitch two innings some times.

Besides, it only helps him in the long run to try to have to work out of trouble.

One more inning, Yanks. And c’mon Tampa!

  692. KurticusMaximus September 12th, 2007 at 10:13 pm

Spags- 4-3 Tampa, top of the ninth.

  693. DMan September 12th, 2007 at 10:13 pm

    migames-

exactly. have to play this like theres no tomorrow now.

  694. randy l September 12th, 2007 at 10:13 pm

    carmine,
when you are a natural righty, you can still use your right hand as your dominant hand when batting lefty. your right hand is on the bottom and controls the bat. when you hit righty, you still let your right hand dominate. it’s just the top hand.
by having your dominant hand on the bottom of the bat give a lot of control. so lefty hitters that are right handed are often your high average hitters. carew, boggs, brett, and now cano.
handedness doesn’t make much difference on what side you swing the bat.
in golf hogan was a natural lefty who hit righty. in today’s game,
mickelson is a righty who hits lefty. you just let your dominate hand always be dominant whichever side you hit or swing.
you can also train your non dominant hand if you want to put in the time. most people just don’t try, but it can be done.

  695. Drewsd September 12th, 2007 at 10:13 pm

migames – we could’ve won this game with Farnsworth who has been doing very well lately. I think we’re all afraid that Torre is trying to force a decision to bend the Joba rules on the Yankees management b/c he is just atrocious on arms/shoulders in general. The man has no logic to how or why he uses relievers and is content with destroying promising futures if it means saving the occasional inning.

  696. Spags September 12th, 2007 at 10:14 pm

    TY Kurt

  697. CUYanks September 12th, 2007 at 10:15 pm

Hey, that error helped Joba’s k/9 ratio

  698. Cheng September 12th, 2007 at 10:15 pm

Do you guys think the Yanks’ offense is good enough to carry Mientkiewicz’s bat in the playoff?
    He’s an automatic out.

  699. Vader September 12th, 2007 at 10:15 pm

    SJ,

You’re right but those three games in August scare the sh@$ out of me.

  700. Master Shake September 12th, 2007 at 10:17 pm

Simply asinine bullpen management on the part of Torre tonight.
    Farnsworth – 7th
    Joba – 8th
    MO – 9th

    It’s not that freaking complicated.

  701. Global Warming September 12th, 2007 at 10:17 pm

“to those who are bitching about using joba for two innings and taking him out of the boston series, we need to win this game. Joba is the best option to pitch the 8th inning. We worry about boston when we play boston, right now, we need to win this game. I think pitching Joba in the 8th inning is a good idea”

Agreed. It’s laughable that some people want some rookie or Farnsworth pitching the 8th of a 4-0 game. Farnsworth has had a nice couple innings but he’s still Kyle Farnsworth. Besides, no one knows if the Joba rules have been altered, so it’s not worth speculating Jobas availability.

  702. -. . --. .- - .. ...- .. - -.-- .-. ..- .-.. . ... September 12th, 2007 at 10:17 pm

The lead in Boston is just an illusion. SOS are toying with those pitiful DRays – they will break their hearts with 2 outs in the bottom of ninth.

  703. Spags September 12th, 2007 at 10:18 pm

Lets go Yanks! Lets go Rays!

  704. Rebecca--Nothing Beats the Power of Optimism + Squirrel September 12th, 2007 at 10:18 pm

  705. -. . --. .- - .. ...- .. - -.-- .-. ..- .-.. . ... September 12th, 2007 at 10:18 pm

The SOS still have a better chance of winning tonight than the Yanks.

    Nice double Melky

  707. Scooter September 12th, 2007 at 10:19 pm

Perhaps there’s Farnsy Rules in place. He’s been pitching well lately and we don’t want to overuse him either.

  708. BBB September 12th, 2007 at 10:19 pm

Cano tired Accardo out so Melky could get a hit. Gotta love Robbie, always taking care of his BFF! :)

  717. migames September 12th, 2007 at 10:24 pm

Drewsd, if farnsworth is that good, he will come thru in boston, we cant speculate if we will need joba in boston. we need to win this one. its all good

  718. SJ44 September 12th, 2007 at 10:24 pm

This is the worst year of umpiring I have ever seen.

The number of blown calls this season is just unbelievable.

Not just against the Yankees, its happening all over baseball.

How does the second base umpire miss that call? Its right in front of him and its not even a tough call?

I guaranteee you, playoff games will be decided by bad calls this year. Its inevitable, given the number of guys who have had awful seasons working games.

Instead of freaking out over every PED story, MLB better get their umpire situation straightened out this off-season.

They have had an AWFUL year.

  719. Dimitri September 12th, 2007 at 10:24 pm

Stupid calls like this can only go against the Yankees.

lucky seven in a row. things are getting interesting.

  728. BBB September 12th, 2007 at 10:26 pm

  737. EY September 12th, 2007 at 10:28 pm

    TTTTHHHHHEEEEEEE YANKEES WIN!!!!
We win even though we only have 3 hits…and big hits they were – especially Robbie’s 2-run single.

All that remains is for Boston to lose and today will be complete.

  738. Dimitri September 12th, 2007 at 10:29 pm

I wonder how many people will get on Wells for such a bush league play. Probably none. But if this was A-Rod, it would be all over the news.

  739. MGW September 12th, 2007 at 10:29 pm

    Yanks win, 4-1.
    Lugo walks, none out.

  740. Uncle Vito September 12th, 2007 at 10:29 pm

don’t kill the messenger…Reyes just HAS to make it interesting as he walks the leadoff BoS*ck in the bottom of the 9th…

  741. sunny615 September 12th, 2007 at 10:29 pm

lugo on first – pedroia up – no outs

  743. Dr. Acula September 12th, 2007 at 10:29 pm

_How does the second base umpire miss that call? Its right in front of him and its not even a tough call?_

I’m tempted to think the ump is in hock

  744. ansky September 12th, 2007 at 10:29 pm

need DP to hit into a DP

  745. Chicago Dave September 12th, 2007 at 10:30 pm

Reyes is absolutely awful… Another blown save comin’ up!!!

  746. KurticusMaximus September 12th, 2007 at 10:30 pm

C’mon Tampa! Hang in there, you just need 3 more outs.

  747. dontfirecash September 12th, 2007 at 10:30 pm

Way to start the inning Al. Please don’t screw this up.

  748. DMan September 12th, 2007 at 10:30 pm

Pedrioa pops out to Left. 1 out, runner on first.

  749. sunny615 September 12th, 2007 at 10:31 pm

what’s wierd is that the yanks won by scoring 4 runs on 3 hits… gotta love them walks

  750. dontfirecash September 12th, 2007 at 10:31 pm

    Alright, two more to go.

  751. BBB September 12th, 2007 at 10:31 pm

    Hold on, Reyes!

  752. Uncle Vito September 12th, 2007 at 10:31 pm

  753. MGW September 12th, 2007 at 10:31 pm

  759. Uncle Vito September 12th, 2007 at 10:33 pm

  760. ansky September 12th, 2007 at 10:33 pm

  761. DMan September 12th, 2007 at 10:33 pm

    3-1 to Ortiz…

  762. Sherri September 12th, 2007 at 10:33 pm

I could not BELIEVE they missed that play!! My son was saying, “So, what? We won!” I said, “Yes, but what if that play had been to decide a World Series?” That was just scary.

  763. Spags September 12th, 2007 at 10:34 pm

He cant hit. He got nuttin.

  764. Chicago Dave September 12th, 2007 at 10:34 pm

Well, they’re not really pitching to Ortiz…

  765. DMan September 12th, 2007 at 10:34 pm

Ortiz Homers… Red Sox win.. =\

    Sorry folks.

  766. Spags September 12th, 2007 at 10:34 pm

    3-1? Just walk him…….

  767. Master Shake September 12th, 2007 at 10:34 pm

I can’t wait to hear Joe’s rationale for pitching Joba 2 innings with a 4 run lead, effectively eliminating him from 2 games against Boston. Oh wait, I won’t hear it because nobody will have the cajones to ask him.

  768. sunny615 September 12th, 2007 at 10:34 pm

    uh-oh

  769. ansky September 12th, 2007 at 10:35 pm

just had to see that coming.

I cant even believe it…and not because the Sox are good but because the Rays are THAT bad.

  770. dmm September 12th, 2007 at 10:35 pm

    F&&&&&&K

  771. Uncle Vito September 12th, 2007 at 10:35 pm

  772. Chicago Dave September 12th, 2007 at 10:35 pm

    Yep, like I said…Reyes is dogs#%t…

  773. mel September 12th, 2007 at 10:35 pm

    That just sucks.

  774. Paddy R September 12th, 2007 at 10:35 pm

you have to be kidding me.

  775. sunny615 September 12th, 2007 at 10:35 pm

    sox win 5-4

  776. Rebecca--Nothing Beats the Power of Optimism + Squirrel September 12th, 2007 at 10:35 pm

    Optimistically speaking,

    I hate David Ortiz.

  777. BBB September 12th, 2007 at 10:35 pm

God, Al Reyes is useless. He should be eliminated.

  778. Dr. Acula September 12th, 2007 at 10:36 pm

    Tampa is such a tease.

  779. Bada Bing September 12th, 2007 at 10:36 pm

man the d-rays dont do us any favors whatsoever

  780. dontfirecash September 12th, 2007 at 10:36 pm

    wow, Fuc* you Al Reyes.

  781. MGW September 12th, 2007 at 10:36 pm

That kind of weak sauce ain’t happening when WE come to Fenway.

  782. Spags September 12th, 2007 at 10:36 pm

DID HE REALLY HOMER? Whats the score?

  783. DesignatedBlogger September 12th, 2007 at 10:36 pm

Well, you knew that was gonna happen…

  784. sunny615 September 12th, 2007 at 10:36 pm

    How bout them Rays?

  785. EY September 12th, 2007 at 10:36 pm

    Bah, that sucked.
Why did I have a feeling that was going to happen. Stupid Big Poopi.

Clearly I was being too optimistic about Tampa Bay’s bullpen holding up – there’s a reason why they have the worst record in the majors…

Still, we win. Every day is a constructive day when the Yankees win.

  786. VT Yankeefan September 12th, 2007 at 10:36 pm

I don’t know if anyone else was watching, but Ortiz just hit a walk off home run to beat the Devil Rays- damn it!! vWe can’ t catch a break in the division, but the wild card looks good

  787. Brandon September 12th, 2007 at 10:36 pm

who’s the RF for TB that tanked on that catchable ball

  788. Yankee VIP September 12th, 2007 at 10:36 pm

why. why.. pitch to him.. especially with manny out..

this is why tampa will never be good

  789. Spags September 12th, 2007 at 10:37 pm

    crap crap crap crippity crap

  790. Spags September 12th, 2007 at 10:37 pm

    crap crap crap crippity crap

  791. YankeeJosh September 12th, 2007 at 10:37 pm

Just got home. Red Sox news depresses me, but what can you do.

I have no idea why Joba pitched 2 innings in a 4-0 game. One inning would have been perfect. Farnsworth could have pitched the 8th and Mo the 9th. That would have made both Joba and Kyle available for 2 of 3 Red Sox games. Really baffling.

  792. ansky September 12th, 2007 at 10:37 pm

im starting the stopwatch to see how long it takes the sox “faithful” to show up once their team has actually won so they can boast.

  793. dmm September 12th, 2007 at 10:37 pm

whatever. we still have the lead in the WC. Believe!

  794. DMan September 12th, 2007 at 10:37 pm

For anybody that couldn’t see the game on TV or MLB tv or whatever…

Delmon Young might have had a chance at catching that HR ball but he ran to far towards the foul pole… Spun around and reached out but it was to far to the other side..

  795. Chicago Dave September 12th, 2007 at 10:37 pm

A so-called “closer” with an ERA pushing 5.00 (BEFORE the Ortiz homer)…How do we ever lose to the D-Rays?!

  796. Erick September 12th, 2007 at 10:37 pm

Damn Delmon Young, he could’ve caught that, it was one row back!!!

  797. Vader September 12th, 2007 at 10:37 pm

the D-Rays are a Butta Face.

  798. kidjock September 12th, 2007 at 10:38 pm

The pitch to Ortiz was RIGHT DOWN THE MIDDLE. WTF?

  799. Spags September 12th, 2007 at 10:38 pm

oh well, goodnight all. The Yanks win, & all they can do is worry about themselves, not the other teams. THATS SEVEN BABY!

  800. sunny615 September 12th, 2007 at 10:38 pm

if they can’t keep a 7 run lead – what makes you think the Rays could hold a 1 run lead??

  801. jobatime September 12th, 2007 at 10:38 pm

spags, if you have a comp to post on a blog, why can’t you follow any of the scores?

    reyes blows

  802. Beckett's No Clemens September 12th, 2007 at 10:39 pm

Anyone see that Ortiz homer? Just showed it on YES. fly ball, bounced off a guy’s hands in the front row in right. If Tampa has a competent OF, it would have been caught for an out.

  803. dontfirecash September 12th, 2007 at 10:39 pm

How the hell did the Yankees lose two out of three to the Rays a week and a half ago?

  804. DMan September 12th, 2007 at 10:39 pm

    Take care Spags,

See you again tomorrow. Same Optimistic time, Same optimistic blog..

Wow that was weak, Im sorry. Hah

  805. Vader September 12th, 2007 at 10:39 pm

    True

  806. EY September 12th, 2007 at 10:39 pm

D-rays pretty much just rolled over…again.

  807. Dr. Acula September 12th, 2007 at 10:40 pm

walks the lead off batter, and then throws a meatball on a 3-1 count.

on the other hand, digya see the sawks’ reaction – boys, boys, never let us see you sweat, it only makes us stronger.

  808. Sherri September 12th, 2007 at 10:40 pm

Seriously!! Why didn’t he try to catch that??? aaarrrgghhh….I really thought they were going to lose tonight. oh well.

  809. DMan September 12th, 2007 at 10:40 pm

    Beckett’s No Clemens-

Yah I saw it, Young over ran it.

The NESN announcers sounded shocked he didn’t catch that.

  810. RedSoxFan44 September 12th, 2007 at 10:40 pm

Hi Yankee Fans – remember me?

In case you don’t I’m not here to troll or boast. I don’t do that.

Anyways, just wanted to say good luck on Friday-Sunday, and here’s for a great series! Best of luck!

  811. BBB September 12th, 2007 at 10:40 pm

Now if that isn’t the epitome of teams rolling over for the sox I honestly don’t know what is. Delmon Young apparently didnt even make an effort to catch that, and why did they even pitch to him in the first place. Gotta wonder, would TB have pitched to A-Rod in the same situation?

  812. randy l September 12th, 2007 at 10:41 pm

nice catch delmon. there is a reason why the devil rays are a last place team.

    Ansky, 3 minutes. Impressive!

  815. This Year September 12th, 2007 at 10:42 pm

We are at the mercy of two idiotic managers. Torre burns Joba for the bosox series and # 70 whatever pitches to ortiz with noone behind him, This ain’t rocket science, but these guys are really stupid when it comes to handling pitchers. I mean really stupid.

  816. Spags September 12th, 2007 at 10:42 pm

    Welcome RedSoxFan44

  817. Jeff NJ September 12th, 2007 at 10:42 pm

yeah that was about the weakest walk off HR I have ever seen. I don’t care anyway, I don’t think we’re catching them for the division lead anyway. We’ll take care of them in the ALCS if they can get there.

  818. Dr. Acula September 12th, 2007 at 10:43 pm

big bright spot – in the last three days, the sox’ pen had to pitch 14 1/3 innings. they were so desperate, they even used Gagne.

  819. Spags September 12th, 2007 at 10:43 pm

goodnight all. I gotta go do some work.

  820. Carmine September 12th, 2007 at 10:44 pm

I stepped away from my computer and came back to find the Red Sox won. You kind of knew Reyes was going to give it up in the 9th.

  821. jobatime September 12th, 2007 at 10:44 pm

firewalls suck as much as the rays

  822. dontfirecash September 12th, 2007 at 10:46 pm

Well, since tampa did the Yanks no favors, a sweep is in order this weekend.

  823. Luigi September 12th, 2007 at 10:47 pm

baltimore and tampa really know how to lay down for the red sox

can anyone find out how many come from behind wins the sox have had over these 2 teams in the eighth inning or later…seems like alottttttt

  824. Larry Jaffe September 12th, 2007 at 10:48 pm

We just won 7 in a row. Joe Torre has managed to manage a significant come back.. he has not burned out Joba… give your whining a break… we won.. we won.. we won..

  825. DCJim September 12th, 2007 at 10:49 pm

How can you walk Lugo? Let Lugo hit the ball! Reyes handed the game to the RedSox. Unbelievable.

  826. Larry Jaffe September 12th, 2007 at 10:49 pm

The Yankees are 40-19 since the All-Star break, the best record in the major leagues.

  827. J-Dawg September 12th, 2007 at 10:50 pm

Al Reyes is definitely not on my Christmas list.

  828. EY September 12th, 2007 at 10:50 pm

It’s about time that Baltimore laid down for us the rest of the season…especially with Bedard out.

  829. Vader September 12th, 2007 at 10:52 pm

Only if they didn’t start 21-29.

  830. Yanks Roool September 12th, 2007 at 10:52 pm

I just came home, we are 3 out now right?

  831. Joba the Head Hunter September 12th, 2007 at 10:53 pm

If they can get there? Oh we’ll be there, but Cali Angels of A are going to put you out of your misery in the 1st round!!!!

  832. Uncle Vito September 12th, 2007 at 10:53 pm

we leave Boston Sunday night only 1 back in the loss column and after the sweep ….taking all of their confidence with us !…great win 4 the Yankees and another lucky break for the Evil Nation….good night all !!!

  833. DMan September 12th, 2007 at 10:53 pm

Ahh don’t fret on about the Red Sox.

    We won, and thats important.

    Go Yankees!!

  834. YankeeJosh September 12th, 2007 at 10:53 pm

My guess is that if the Joba rules have been amended at all, we’ll see Joba available for one inning Saturday and one inning on Sunday.

He threw 35 pitches tonight, which is his max. No way he’s getting less than two days off imo. With a Saturday afternoon game and a Sunday night game, I think that’s how they’d tweak Joba’s rules this weekend.

  835. Vader September 12th, 2007 at 10:57 pm

    Joba the Head Hunter,

“we’ll be there, but Cali Angels of A are going to put you out of your misery in the 1st round!!!!”

What side of the fence you on?

  836. Yanks Roool September 12th, 2007 at 10:58 pm

    Ortiz did it again????

    :( (((

  837. ansky September 12th, 2007 at 11:05 pm

Well, by my trusty stopwatch it took less than 20 mins for the trolls to show (im not counting soxfan44 b/c he seemed to have a grasp on the English language and general manners)
    So thats 20 mins to:
-send wicked sweet texts to paulie, little sal, guffa, tommy and matty
-chug as many Sammys as possible
-pray at the awkward altar of Papi
-make an apointment at the tat parlor for yet another sox logo tat. sweeeeeeet
-catch the T back to southie(sudbury) before the bandwagon crashes.

    yup, just enough time.

  838. Vader September 12th, 2007 at 11:09 pm

The Sawx have such wicked smaaat fans. Oh, by the way, Paplebon is such a clam.

  839. gayle September 12th, 2007 at 11:20 pm

SJ could not bre more right about the bad calls around the league this year. I am not accusing them of anything but these are the same guys whose uniion recently refused to have background checks done on them after the Ton Donaghey scandal.

Dont worry about Boston our bad start this year pretty much gave them the division we need to keep winning and whatever happens will happen. Right now we are in the wold card lead and we need to take care of that and if we do the divison may happen.

I am off to the game tomorrow night hope for the sweep and a good outing by Kennedy I was there for his stadium debut and was very please he is a battler which I like.

  840. Yanks Roool September 12th, 2007 at 11:27 pm

  841. Atul September 12th, 2007 at 11:29 pm

Peter, can you ever admit when Torre makes foolish decisions? Can you admit he has no idea how to manage a pen? Burned out so many arms over the past 4 years – thank god we have “rules” governing his use of Joba, though he did his best to screw things up by allowing him to throw 35 pitches with a 4 run lead. Now Joba is out until Saturday. Brilliant.

If he wanted Joba to pitch the 8th, then have Bruney pitch the 7th. If he wanted Joba to pitch the 7th, have Farnsworth pitch the 8th. How difficult is it for old man Torre to figure out?!?

  842. This Year September 12th, 2007 at 11:36 pm

Atul, right on. Neither Pete nor any other beat reporter will challenge Torre with a probing question. I guess it is about friendly access. But jeez, can you ever ask a constructively critical question? Burning Joba tonight is totally irrational. I have a feeling, though, Cash is watching and that Torre is going to be spending more time in Hawaii next year.

  843. Peter Abraham September 12th, 2007 at 11:46 pm

    Atul, This year:

Are you guys paying attention? Chamberlain had not pitched in 4 days. He also threw only 12 pitches in the seventh inning.

His pitch limit is 35 or 40 an outing. If you don’t send him out for the 8th inning, you’re going to get Brian Bruney or Kyle Farnsworth. Do you really want to risk Detroit picking up a game on the Yankees? Because at that point, they had already won.

Here’s a little hint for you: Bruney and Farnsworth are not reliable. Bruney has been awful since he got called back up and Farnsworth is Farnsworth. Here’s another hint for you: a 4-run lead on turf on the road means zippo, especially with the Yankees having stopped scoring.

You want Bruney in the game? You lost me there.

  844. little m September 12th, 2007 at 11:51 pm

Peter: My family lives in Canada, so I can tell you it’s no surprise the wiring in Rogers’ own building doesn’t work. They have a well-deserved bad rep for spotty performance, arrogant customer non-service, and some really shady billing practices. Just brutal.

Kudos for all your hard work on this blog – your posts are the best source of real-time coverage going, and funny, funny, funny. PeteAbe rocks, Joba Rules, let’s go Yankees (and the squirrel too)!!!

  849. Hawk September 13th, 2007 at 10:18 am

baltimore and tampa really know how to lay down for the red sox…

Or, they understand that they CANT lost to teams like that, while NY squanders chance after chance to put them away.

  850. Atul September 13th, 2007 at 10:41 am

    Peter,

If you can’t put Farnsworth in a game to get 3 outs with a 4 run lead against a non-playoff team with the 3rd worst offensive output in the AL, then he should never be used. Forgetting the fact that you yourself have had to grudgingly admit that he’s pitched well of late? You’re letting your personal feelings about managers/players get in the way of objective analysis and reasoning, and it’s obvious to many of us who read the blog.

Bottom line – if you can’t trust Bruney or Farnsworth to get 3 outs in a game with a 4 run lead, then they shouldn’t even be on the team. Oh by the way – Rivera got 4 outs and came in to the game in the 8th, so we really only needed them to get 2 outs.

Instead, Torre’s bungling of the pen has cost us Joba for 2 out of the 3 Red Sox games. Would you rather have Farnsworth pitching in Toronto with a 4 run lead in the 8th or in Fenway with the game on the line Peter?
