Jason Giambi snapped out of his slump with a grand slam as the Yankees moved 20 games over. 500 with a 9-2 victory at Toronto.

Roger Clemens is set for Sunday in Boston. This notebook also has news on Shelley Duncan, Luis Vizcaino, Mike Mussina and a visit from an old friend.

Finally, restore your faith in humanity by reading this story from Harold Gutmann. It’s about a fan who wanted to give a home run ball back to the player. It’s a great read.

Pete, great to have Roger back the elbow concerns me.Ligament damage usually means Tj surgery.I really like the way the Yankees supported Phil. Here’s hoping Moose is bringing his “A “game

    1) The Boston Patriots are a big bunch of cheaters!

    2) Page Six has a LaughOutLoud behind the scenes report of the B-Bomb

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – (AP) New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick has hired former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales as the team’s new advance scout.

At the newsconference, Belichick said he was unconcerned with Gonzales’ lack of football experience, saying “Al Gonzales has a way of tapping into the anyone’s system.” For his part, Gonzales defended the Patriots surreptious conduct against the New York Jets, saying the teams’ video operators had “no recollection” of inserting a fresh tapes and pointing and focusing the team’s cameras on the Jets’ coaching staff.

    A Cashman interview:

    “Cash Link”:http://www.wcbs880.com/pages/929954.php?contentType=4&contentId=903120

    One interesting comment of note:

“*And if Alex opts out, the Yanks will not pursue him?*

If he opts out, we won’t pursue him. It’s basically economics. Any discussions will have to be prior to opting out. If he opts out, we will have to go in a different direction.”

  5. Doreen

    Sunny615 -

Thanks for the link. A very informative interview, indeed.

As far as Rodriguez goes, well, here’s hoping he doesn’t opt out, but I never believe everything Cashman says when it concerns negotiations and what the Yankees ultimately intend to do.

  6. Steve Howe You Doin

    Thanks for the wrap-up Pete.

I was thinking about this last night – I believe a loss of Shelley Duncan for a potential playoff series should not be taken lightly. Nearly every team we could face has lefty specialists that Duncan would off-set.

Any thoughts on adding a blog piece on this, with suggestions for possible roster replacements, and the lack of righty power off our bench as a result?

Let’s not write the obit yet, but prepare instead for the worst.

    Thanks.

  7. jennifer

For those in NY, Paul O’niell will be on 660 at 9am.

  8. Uncle Vito

I am sure that back then and still now, I am being touted as a crazy man, but no matter…Yankees need now only to finish 14-4 ( actually 11-4 after sweeping Boston ) and they WILL finish a full 30 games over .500 at 96-66. Tonight, the Yankees will crush Toronto again. There will be NO stopping us now !

  9. Catya

So that’s how they won those Super Bowls, their “Homey Snoop Dog, Belichick.”I knew they weren’t that good!!!!! Bring on the penalties and fines. Money, lost draft picks has such a nice ring, ahhhhhh.

    BUSTED!!!!

  10. Paul

Shelley Duncan probably got that hernia by slamming some thing or some body…I winced when he came around the players to celebtate this or that…it’s a disaster waiting to happen!

  11. sunny615

    From the NY Times:

Clemens said he threw at about 80 percent exertion in the bullpen and did not feel elbow pain. He will repeat the exercise Thursday, and Torre said that if he could not start Sunday, Phil Hughes would.

  12. Jeff NJ

Wow Pete, thanks for pointing out the line for the Yankees on 9-11, 9 runs, 11 hits. That is a bit spooky. Let me just remind us that since those 9-11 attacks the Yankees have not won the World Series. Hopefully this omen is one that signifies the end of a 6 year period of mourning and the beginning of a time of greatness. The best way to start that would be a parade down the Canyon of Heroes in late October of this year. Show the world that NY and the NY Yankees are back and better than ever.

  13. jennifer

Paul is on now, for those interested.

  14. DMan

Ohh lots of Patriot talk around here this morning..

    Paul-
Hah probably. That man comes with a lot of intensity.

    JeffNJ-
Yah I didnt pick up on that line either until I read it.. That is spooky.

  15. DMan

    Hey jennifer-

Thanks for linking that first article about the Patriots thing.. It wasn’t on any major sports pages until a day or 2 later.. Now its everywhere!

  16. jw

    Go go Patriots

  17. jennifer

I’ve got my sources. :P No problem. I can’t wait to see what the new commish does to punish the Pats.

  18. marc

It always seemed strange that The Patriots always had average players and always won. Evertime Brady gets blitzed it looks like he is expecting it.

  19. sunny615

    Hey Pete

Just curious here, but if Goodell determines that the Pats did in fact cheat – does that impact the way you look at Belichick and his superbowl wins? What is your take on this?

  20. DMan

Personally, I was always carried a lot of envy for what the Patriots did. Coming from the Brink of a lost season to creating a dynasty.. But, I respected it. I think a lot of people felt the same before this. They hated the Patriots, but they respected what they did..

    Now though….

  21. jennifer

How about winning the superbowl on the bogus tuck play?

  22. Phil

That was a solid interview of Cashman. Thanks for the link.

The GM vehemently denied the Joba Rules were to protect Joba from Joe and reiterated that if Alex opts out, the Yanks are out.

  23. The D train

The bullpen wasn’t taxed last night which means the slightest sign of Mussina getting whacked around means ready arms to the rescue.

  24. Joan in Cheshire

I still can’t believe the Yankees fell for the ‘Clemens retirement program’ – 20+ Million, family plan, etc.etc. Now we see exactly what we’ve got here. An overage, ailing pitcher who is just taking up space on the mound for his own ego trip. A pitcher who goes back to his own Doctor for ‘treatment’ – we can only imagine what that is.

If Roger has any conscience left, he should now RETIRE FOR GOOD and contribute 20 + Million Dollars to the ‘Fallen Heros Fund’ at Walter Reed or a charity of his choice, not himself.

If we want an older pitcher who is in great shape and could still pitch – Ron Guidry is already here.

  25. raymagnetic

The Yanks have like 20 pitchers in the pen. There’s no way they get taxed for the rest of the season.

As for the Alex situation, if he opts out it’ll cost the Yankees something like $100 mil in luxury taxes without including what it’ll cost in revenue sharing so I seriously doubt he’ll go after him if Alex opts out. Doesn’t mean he won’t try to extend the current contract in the 15 day window however. I honestly think if the Yankees win it this year Alex will stay and try to work on his own dynasty with the Yanks.

  26. Martin S

You can always believe a GM during the season when he talks about negotiating with players after the season.

    They always tell the truth.

  27. Martin S

The Yanks have like 20 pitchers in the pen. There’s no way they get taxed for the rest of the season.

I think people meant taxed meaning our good pitchers.

    Not Henn, Karstens etc

  28. Brooklyn Doug

    Hey Joan,

I’m sure you would have loved seeing DeSalvo and Igawa out there all the times Clemens pitched this year.

    Right?

And check the record of the team since he signed and started up.

    Coincidence?

Who cares about his salary? You paying it?

  29. marc

Its funny as a Yankee fan to see the Mets acting like the “old” Yankees by using washed up vets instead of budding rookies. They are planning on having El Duque, Pedro and Glavine as their 3 starters with Maine versus Perez for the last spot for the playoffs. Even though Maine and Perez are probably their best pitchers. El Duque stinks and is injured and Pedro pitched 2 games and has not pithced more than 5 innings. With that bullpen 5 innings does not go far enough.

    Good luck against the Padres!

  30. Mike Westchester

What team in football isn’t try to gain an advantage?

If the Jets or some team are dumb enough to be caught in patterns giving away plays they should be burnt for it.

Football is war. There is spying involved. Thats why teams put out disinformation and change things up.

If the Jets didn’t they deserve to be losers.

Cheating is what the Black Sox did.

  31. Sean A

    marc,

The Padres cannot hit a lick. The Mets can.

If Trevor Hoffman scares you come October you shouldn’t be playing.

And Chris Young has been horrendous since July.

If the Mets don’t make the series it would be a huge upset.

  32. raymagnetic

    Martin S,

Why would they use their good pitchers in a blowout?

  33. Tony NJ

Why aren’t people more concerned about Rodney Harrison being banned for 4 games for HGH than them trying to steal signs?

He is only one of their MVP’s and the leader of the D and an All Pro.

Yet fans care more about Troy Glaus and Jay Gibbons?

    Did I miss something?

  34. marc

I think Edwar is now becomming the new proctor/Viz/Sturtz now that Viz is out.

It looks like the Joe bullpen order from best to worst is now:

    Mo
    Joba
    Viz
    Farnsworth
    Edwar
    Britton
    Bruney

    Or has Edwar passed Farnsworth??

  35. DMan

    Mike Westchester-

    Football is a game, not a war…

Cheating is not allowed, thats why its in the rulebooks and thats why the Patriots will be firmly punished.

Caught in patterns? What do you mean? The Patriots stole the Jets signals (and probably the signals of many other teams, like Green Bay for exampme)..

And you want to talk about stupid? The Patriots could have beat the jets WITHOUT cheating, but they were dumb enough to do it anyway.

  36. Martin S

    That was my point ray.

    They won’t get taxed.

  37. marc

Wasn’t the score 14-7 at the half?
Didn’t they use the camera guys information in the 2nd half?
The game had 2 very different halves.

  38. Phil

Who said they believed Cashman on the A-Rod situation? Just stating what came out of the interview.

  39. Mike Westchester

Coaches and players and teams and fans don’t think it’s just a game.

    It’s war.

From the terminology to the “war room” to everything in between.

Teams will do anything they can to get an advantage and find a weakness in a team.

Get over it or don’t watch sports.

It’s not cheating. All is fair in war.

If the Jets are dumb enough to not make adjustments and not send phony signals out they deserve to be taken advantage of.

  40. Greg

“ManGenuis” was hoodwinked by something high school teams do???

He should lose that nickname for being so damn stupid.

  41. Rob from Plainview

I love how when Edwar has one good game he’s not instantly in the good mix.

There is a reason he pitches in blowouts.

He has a long way to go before he is on Farnsworths level.

Laugh all you want and say what you want but he is going to pitch important innings down the stretch and in the playoffs.

And if he keeps doing what he has been doing he will be okay.

  42. DMan

    Mike Westchester-

Right, Im sure Pat Tillman’s family would agree with you that football is a lot like war. Sure thing.

And do you honestly believe that the Patriots only cheated agaisnt the Jets? You honestly think they haven’t been doing it for years?

I agree teams will try and do anything they can to win, but that doesn’t make cheating right or defendable.. You won’t catch me defending Giambi for what he did, even if I do route for the guy.

  43. Carl Weathers

I wish the Jets would have scouted and taped the Pats.

Maybe they wouldn’t have been smoked.

  44. Rebecca--Nothing Beats the Power of Optimism + Squirrel

You know, I bet you guys every player on the Jets right now is thinking about NEXT Sunday.

    I know I am…

(The Pats were caught–what else is there for the Jets to want?)

  45. DMan

    Carl Weathers-

Well thats kind of the thing.. The Patriots already had the better team. Chances were good they would have won anyway..

  46. marc

    Rob from Plainview,

I am not arguing that Edwar is better than Farnsworthbut who would Joe use for the 7th inning in a game where Viz is unavailable?

  47. Mike Westchester

Wow, DMAN. Way to go overboard there.

But unfortunately while the Tillman family may not agree millions of people do. From fans to players to coaches.

You can disagree with it all you want but its a fact.

Just listen to the analysts and commentators every week.

People don’t think players cheat by taking HGH and juice. You really think they care if teams are trying to find out what teams are up to???

I guarantee you that Pat fans could care less right now and no one has any sympathy for the Jets.

  48. Rob from Plainview

I think it’s really obvious that Torre would use Farnsworth in a close game.

As you saw last week against the Royals.

Edwar isn’t even in the discussion.

  49. Carl Weathers

It’s true. The only ones who care are Jet fans.

  50. Brian F

I know the people here are only trying to get Pete’s goat with the Pats thing.

    But get over it.

This is what teams do. They try to find any weakness of an opponent. Is it morally right? No. But they don’t care. It’s a game as you all say.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they find some teams use high tech eaves dropping equipment too.

    I kinda hope they do.

  51. Matty H

A sports team tries to find any advantage it can???

    I’m shocked!!

    Yawn.

  52. chris in fairfield

farnsworth worries me in the playoffs .

  53. The Rick

Two thing fans don’t give two cruds about.

    NFL players using drugs.

    NFL teams cheating.

Now if a dog was involved….

  54. jennifer

It is cheating plain and simple! It is in the rule book. Thats it end of story. Don’t talk about gaining an advantage blah blah blah. They’ve been caught in the past doing things against he rules. Maybe it is about time the league comes down hard on them. They should be foreced to forfiet their win. That would be the ultimate punishment.

  55. Rob from Plainview

Farnsworth should be the least of anyones worries.

How about a #3 starter first?

Clemens health, using 21 yr old starters, Vizcainos health

I would rank them all above a 6/7th inning bullpen guy who has thrown great the last month.

  56. DMan

Yeesh, I guess Im way to interested in the story. It happens. Ill drop it. But just by the by, I dont think anybody was trying to get Pete involved or riled up or anything like that.. I just happened to find it an interesting story.

But, more on topic I suppose, yes.. Farnsworth is the hardest player to be completely optimistic about.

  57. Nick

    jennifer,

If you are that naive I got a great bridge to sell you in Brooklyn.

  58. Rob from Plainview

If a 6/7th inning guy is our biggest worry we should all be overjoyed and be the heavy favorites for the title.

  59. Monument Park

    Every sport has cheaters.

But I’d rather have teams and players cheating to win and get better than throwing games.

    IE NBA refs

  60. Loren

I’m sure it was the Pats taping defensive signals from coaches that lead to their dynasty, super bowls, and a week 1 win over the Jets.

    Please. Give me a break.

  61. Peter Rabbit

Hey guys I have a question:

How many players are allowed on the roster during the playoffs? I always forget. I know we can go up to 40 right now, but are all 40 brought into the playoffs?

Thanks, (if you reply to my question, write my name “Peter Rabbit” so I can easily find your post.)

  62. DMan

    Peter Rabbit-

Playoff Rosters are put back down to 25, so some choices need to be made!

  63. Peter Rabbit

Thanks Dman. When I was younger, I never payed this close attention to the management process. There are some hard choices that need to be made here…

Who do you think the Yanks will bring?

  64. Penningtons Arm

Finally the perfect Belichick gets caught.

    How sad.

  65. Maximus

How do you post on a blog like this and not know that it’s 25 man rosters for the playoffs?

  66. Mike Westchester

As much as I don’t care and I think fans don’t mind, I do expect the Commish to come down hard on the Pats. He set a precedent for not being lenient already and he can’t go back on that now.

My guess is this costs them a 2nd or 3rd round draft pick.

  67. sunny615

The game is war – that has got to be the single most dumbest statement I’ve heard in a long time. It’s a competition… a game. To get unfair advantage over another team/player is cheating. Plain and simple. The rules exist to ensure fair competition. If the opposing team and/or player has an unfair advantage (like how to cover an upcoming blitz) then it’s cheating. I don’t know about the rest of you, but if I had found out that the 96-00 championships were won because the Yankees had cheated their way to them (by roiding up all their players or corking all their bats, or what have you), I’d be far less inclined to root for them now knowing that those rings were not earned. How does everyone feel about Barry Bonds’ all-time homerun record? Is it something you cheered over when he broke it? I know I didn’t and I know that I’ll never celebrate his accomplishments nor think of him as a HR king. Ever. If your co-worker stole your work and claimed responsibility for your accomplishments getting your promotion and new 6 figure salary and window office, how thrilled would you be? Fair or unfair. Hey, all competition is war right?

  68. marc

    Peter Rabbit,

Did you think can bring their whole farm system to the playoffs?

  69. sunny615

And by the way – even war has rules. (See Geneva Conventions).

  70. Mike Westchester

    sunny

Ask the Pats coaches and coaches around the league if it’s a “game”.

It’s not to them and it’s not to the players.

And no real fan of the sport or a team wants to hear his head coach say its just a game.

We want these people fighting like it is war.

You can disagree with it all you want but that’s life and thats football.

It’s more than a game. it’s more than a job. it is trench warfare every week.

You may dislike the analogy but it’s spot on.

  71. DMan

    Maximus-

Come on now, thats just rude man. Everyone around here has a question now and then and should never be afraid to ask it.

  72. Peter Rabbit

Maximus, there are so many things I remember in life, but I always forget the roster rules. It’s just one of those things.

  73. sunny615

in your world perhaps… but in the end – ask the coaches and players what war really is and they’ll tell you Iraq… not a football field.

  74. Nick

Jeez Louise. Get a life. It’s an analogy about the game calling it war. It can be applied because it is a game.

No one is saying it’s guns and bombings and nuclear weapons.

    Give it a rest.

  75. Mike Westchester

    sunny

I think everyone would agree that the war against Islamic terrorists is a war.

But there are plenty of people out there who will say that football is war. Just listen to coaches pregame speeches. They channel General Patton more than Bob Barker.

Obviously its not the same thing you complete dunce.

i’d say get your head out of your butt but that would be too kind.

  76. sunny615

I’m am not saying it’s a game that they take lightly. I am certain all the coaches and players will do their best to win games. Drafting the best players. Putting together schemes and plans. Even scouting the other team, but that’s all fine as it’s within the rules. But if a coach or team is so insecure in their teams ability to win games, then they shouldn’t be there in the first place. Go back to High School coaching. TO be able to claim to be the best by winning fairly and abide by all the rules every other team has to abide by shows that you really are the best in the game. Not because you cheated your way to the top. Does that make you a champion? Not in my eyes, just a cheater.

  77. Uncle Vito

    PREDICTION :

Yankees win tonight 12-8….2 great things happen….Moose stinks again and is forever banished from starting, …the Yankees pull to within 3 games in the loss column to the RedSux as Lester is torn up by TB as the Devil Dogs take the series from Boston 2-1..

and there is MORE JOY in Yankee Land !!!

  78. Maximus

    I’m just asking a quesiton.

No need to get nasty D Man.

  79. Jeff NJ

It was interesting to hear that Torre found Ohlendorf interesting. It sounds like he is on the verge of passing Britton and Bruney in Marc’s list.

By the way, Michael Kay, on last night’s postgame said suddenly the Randy Johnson trade doesn’t look too bad. Did anyone on here not like the RJ trade at the time? I know Kay asked how they were going to replace those 200 innings? Now he says the Yankees got 4 players but mistakenly included Steven White in the trade, not Steven Jackson.

Also Kay called Edwar the little girl with the curl, he most use that expression 15 times a day. Edwar is fine, guess he expects perfection due to Joba’s emergence.

Why is it the average blog commentor knows more about the Yankee details than he does? I think it’s time for him to focus on one job. He really started annoying me with these quotes yesterday. Michael Kay, you are on notice.

  80. mel

    Sooo? How ’bout them Yanks?

  81. Denver Jim

Coaches are just trying to give themselves every advantage. I’m sure most teams do it. Doesn’t make it right and they’ll pay the piper in the end.

But it is big business now. Wins and losses are the only stats that matter in the end. They are playing and coaching for jobs and money.

If they didn’t try to find weaknesses in their opponents they wouldn’t be doing their job.

Should baseball teams not try to steal signs??

    Go Broncos!

  82. DMan

    12-8 Hmm?

Do any of those runs come off an A-Rod HR?

  83. Porkchop

    Jeff NJ,

How about cutting some slack to Kay for saying White instead of Jackson? That’s an innocent mistake there and not something that he should be fried over.

You never made a mistake by calling a different name???

  84. Maximus

    12-8?

    Random.

Personally I think the Tigers game the other night destroyed the Jays. It’s mail in time for them.

  85. Catya

Can’t we all just get along? Questions are allowed too.

  86. Terence D

I hope the NFL makes the Pats forfeit the season and give the Jets the title. waah wahhh booo hoooo

  87. Uncle Vito

*Dman* …At least 2 of them…A-Rod AND Jeter with both have 3 hits and A-Rod will have at least 1 HR and drive in at least 3……The boys know that Father Time is on the mound, the bats will be HOT !

  88. DMan

Yah its getting a little tense around here today.

I’m hoping Moose puts up a solid outting.. I’d love to see him go 6..

  89. mel

Jeter’s saving his hits for the Red Sox series.

  90. Rebecca--Nothing Beats the Power of Optimism + Squirrel

    Vito: You’re on!

  91. ray

    Vito

I think your crystal ball has some cracks in it. Mussina takes the loss tonight and Lester takes the win for the Sox.

    good post!
    —-
    Mike Westchester

you’re just making yourself look silly now.

All’s fair in war? So a Tonya Harding type knee bashing of Brady would be a-okay in your book?

  93. cc

why did Todd Zeile play for so many teams? was it because he was good enough for all of them to give him a job, or not good enough to hold on to the job?

  94. Dr. Acula

    Fire Michael Kay, PERIOD

    The guy is disloyal.

at the all-star break, two months ago he said, “nobody thinks this team has a chance at making the playoffs.”

That’s as bad, if not worse than Steve Philips.

Even if he really believed that, he shouldn’t say it to anyone outside of the family. Wadda maleducato.

  95. cc

If Michael Kay is to be fired, it should be for the sound of his voice. It’s just not pleasant enough to listen to for 9 innings almost every game, and as a radio guy he still talks far too much. Or maybe he could be demoted to one of the rotation of commentators, rather than the main character.
