End of the day at Fenway Park
A few postgame notes:
Jorge Posada was taken to Mass General Hospital to be checked for a concussion because he had a headache. None of the Yankees thought that Eric Hinske did anything dirty when he ran Posada over in the sixth inning.
“He’ll be all right,” Jeter said. “He’s got a hard head.”
Chien-Ming Wang was disconsolate afterward. The Red Sox make him think. He adjusts to them, they adjust to him. It’s a constant game of cat-and-mouse. Wang threw more sliders and changeups back on Aug. 30 and threw seven scoreless innings against the Red Sox.
Today Boston crushed his secondary pitches. Of the five runs they scored on him, all came with two outs. “They have good hitters,” Wang said.
Nobody came right out and said it. But the Yankees know the division is lost now. Down 5.5 games with 14 to play is not a good equation.
“Like I told you before, we’re not trying to talk about the division or trying to talk about the wild card, we’re trying to win every day,â€? Derek Jeter said. “That’s the approach we have to have and in a couple of weeks we’ll see what happens.”

Did anyone have anything to say about Beckett throwing at Giambi?
the twins had better win tonight…dammit!
Some thoughts –
1. Unfortunately, there is no test, not CAT or MRI, that can diagnose a concussion. It is purely a clinical diagnosis. I wouldn’t be surprised if Molina started tomorrow. And is was a clean play by Hinske.
2. The Red Sox gives Wang fits. Although he has had good games against them, they give the most problems. Cat and mouse is a good way to describe the constant adjustments that they seem to go through.
3. Though I hate to admit it, it would take a great collapse by Boston to lose the division. Not impossible, but highly unlikely. That being said, getting into the playoffs is what counts. Because once you’re in, anything can happen (look at St. Louis with an inferior team last year). The World Series rings don’t shine any less.
The division means little to nothing (ask the Cards from last year if they regret not winning the NL Central)
It must be tough to tell CMW to throw the sinker in the strike zone, that is not the way the pitch works. This is where seeing the Sawx SOBs a million times in the regular season helps them.
Wild Card winners have won a bunch of World Series. I would be delighted to add our name to the list.
I hope Jorge’s ok. His head came out of that helmet and slammed into the ground, it looked like. That’s no good.
Hey Pete, here is a URL for you to get rid of. Its running on this page:

Wang was wild for him, just like the last time he pitched (although he won). In the postgame interview after that game, Torre said the reason Wang was wild was because he was “too strong” as he had an extra day’s rest. The NEXT day he announces that he is shoehorning Mussina into the Toronto series pushing everybody back, including Wang. Kennedy could have pitched on regular rest last Wednesday in place of Mussina, Pettitte Thursday on regular rest, Wang Friday on regular rest, Clemens Saturdy and Hughes Sunday on regular rest. Just another example of how Torre has no idea how to hanle a pitching staff and why IMO Cash will ease him out after this year regardless of what happens.
We’ll get them tomorrow. Rocket’s going to have a huge day, given that it might be his last time at Fenway.
I pray everyday someone throws a bullet at Giambi and he’s out for the rest of his career as a New York Yankee, i loved Joe Torre but as soon as he started putting that savage at 1st base…i lost all respect in JOE. What do these people see in him? Sure he hit a homer yesterday but because of him the sox scored 2 runs…take him away at first base and take away his home run…we still win.
I hate that man more then anything in the world. Can we start a chant at yankee stadium…”RETIRE, GIAMBI”
Hey, C’mon!!
Cleveland is winning 6-ZIP in the 8th. Now THAT”S what I’m talk’n about.
Indians currently have the number two seed.
And look, I take perverse pleasure in stomping on Boston, but it’s hard to sweep on the road. Last June we took 2 of 3; and this past week we failed to sweep toronto, etc.
We come home Monday, and if HG Wells or Kennesaw Mountain Landis ended the season today, Boston would be on a very, very long plane ride to Cali.
Bring it ON!
The Red Sox beat the Yankees and Beckett outpitched Wang. Definitely a miserable day for me!
Pete,
Thanks for the update on Posada. He was tough at home plate all day today. I pray that he will be fine. Posada is too valuable for Yankees. We can’t lose him. I don’t quite understand the play and call when Hinske scored. I thought he caught Hinske. I mean blocked. If that is not enough, so, does this mean that catcher need to tag the runner coming home? Just trying to learn some baseball here.
How is Clemens doing?
A terrible performance from Wang and Yankees offense never woke up. RedSox figure out Wang and they hit him hard. I was expecting much better results from Wang. RedSOx had a great game and their pitchers stopped Yankees’s hope for sweeping then again. However,Yankees still can take the series by winning tomorrow’s game when Clemens on the mound. Let’s go Yankees! Let’s keep playing hard every game. Let’s go Clemens!

“Just another example of how Torre has no idea how to hanle a pitching staff and why IMO Cash will ease him out after this year regardless of what happens”
I really hope so, if we really want to see a WS win soon. Not taking away the success Joe had in the first five years, he is not he right manager for the younger team.
detroit won.
only 2.5 games up now
Twins lost by one.
No matter.
The Yankees are still leading the Wild Card.
They still control their own destiny.
Who cares about the division?
I want a ring.
Yeah, Baby!!
The very Randi Rene Russo was involved in a Fenway ménage à trois:
http://tinyurl.com/24wfgp
If I asked you what team you would bet your ranch on– either Minnesota who was throwing the best pitcher in baseball the last 3 seasons, or Detroit who was throwing a relief pitcher– whic one would you have taken? Me too. Don’t like the karma here. Maybe Santana is part of the anti-NYY conspiracy.
Pete,
I got the name wrong. I mean to say the play of Jacoby Ellsbury.
Wasn’t it obvious that with a four-run lead and two outs, Beckett hit Gaimbi to retaliate? The problem is that in a 1-1 game with one ball and two strikes, there was little reason for Wang to hit Youkilis on purpose. It even cost him a run!
These are the team match-ups the next 2 weeks:
We play Baltimore (3), Toronto (4), Tampa (3) and Baltimore (3).
Detroit plays Cleveland (3), KC (3), Minny (3) and ChiSox (3).
On paper, our toughest series is, of course, Toronto, although it is at home. We face Halladay, Marcum, McGowan and Burnett, I believe, which is very, very tough. Gotta hope we do business against Baltimore and Cleveland– which is at home– takes care of Detroit. In that seies, Detroit misses Carmona unfortunately.
twins are a joke. had their best pitcher on the mound, he was awful in the first inning and that was the ballgame. twins offense is pathetic.
May I ask a baseball question? Please help me out.
I don’t quite understand the play and call when acoby Ellsbury scored. I thought Posada caught acoby Ellsbury. I mean blocked. If that is not enough, so, does this mean that catcher need to tag the runner coming home? Just trying to learn some baseball here.
and I have my doubts about old man clemens pitching in fenway.
The Yankees attention needs to turn now from contending for the division to making the playoffs at all. A 2.5 game lead is by no means safe with two weeks left in the season. With the exception of one Tigers/Cleveland series both the Tiger and Yankees will be facing basement dwellers. However, the Yankees have had trouble with a couple of the basement dwellers they’ve faced.
Against the Devil Rays and Orioles, the Yankees are 12-15 this season!
And if Wang had trouble just because of how many times he faces the Red Sox, then how’d Daisuke and Beckett pitch so well against the Yankees the past couple of days?
hi, Rebecca,
We need to keep on believing. We need the keep the optimism going. This series is not over yet! It is far from over!!! Yankees still can take the series tomorrow! As long as Yankees play hard everyday and every game. They still can bring the #27 home.
CMFeng:
As there was no force at home (which would only occur in a bases-loaded situation), a tag was required to get the out.
Yes, since it was not a force play (on Jacoby) the fielder has to actually tag the runner to get the out. Posada (likely anticipating getting run over again) never tagged Ellsbury, but instead put his glove up in the air as if to brace himself should Ellsbury run into him.
I hope that clarifies.
CMFeng, it’s not the series Yankees fans are upset about. It’s that with the loss tonight, they’ve almost surely lost the division and are now only 2.5 games up in the WC with a hurt Clemens going tomorrow.
I think it is rather obvious that Beckett hit Giambi intentionally and Wang’s HBP had no intent.
To the more acute baseball observer however, it’s also somewhat obvious that Joba intentionally threw over the head of Youkilis in the previous series. According to Joba, he was trying out a new pitch but Posada clearly puts down the sign for a fastball on both occasions and that’s what Joba threw. He’s talked to Clemens quite a bit since he’s been called up so it’s likely that Clemens “helped” him to get the idea.
You know what we need?
We need to come up with a motto to get us through these final weeks. So, please choose your favorite:
A: 27 in 07
B: OPTIMISM WORKS!
C: Have a little faith, there’s magic in the night
D: Stay TOUGH ALL DAY
E: ____________ (write-in)
You can, of course, choose more than one!
Rebecca. I’m a fan of A. I like D too, but I feel like that’s a team thing. Let them have it. I think A says it all. I think that all of the others are encompassed within A.
Right, so that’s one vote for ‘27 in 07′!
Jorge’s a gamer, he’ll bounce back from the collision. At a game in May of last year, Mark Teixeira crashed into him at the plate and later in the game Jorge belted the game-winning homer. If he’s in the lineup, I would expect big things from him against Schilling!
Rebecca- I also like slogan A!
Dr. A- Rene Russo still looks terrific. I’ve always loved her!!
Two for 27 in 07!
This loss goes to show that yesterday’s amazing comeback had no effect on the Sox, only their fans…We get a little to giddy at times. That is a professional team over there, as much as I hate to admit it. This rivalry will be getting more intense with all the young home grown talent in both Organizations, and two young GMs who really know what their doing. This will be fun to watch…Even if it gives me an ulcer:)
wow. Teixeira’s a big dude. Hinske is too. Every time I watch a replay of that it is painful.
But as I’ve already said, this is why it’s so great having Molina as the back-up catcher. If Posada needs to sit tomorrow, Molina won’t hurt the line up.
to jim kenobi and Favorite Contributor,
I got it now. Thanks. Beside A-rod, Posada is my MVP. He did what he can and I hope he is fine.
Favorite Contributor,
I totally understand the frustration here. I must admit yesterday’s and today’s lost are the hardest ones for me to swallow. I feel bad just like you do. However, if Yankees keep play hard every game, they still can win the wild card, isn’t it? Yankees has no time to look back. They need to fight hard in the rest of games ahead. I have faith that they still have chance to play in October. And, I was just trying to cheer everyone up here.
Make it 3. Rebecca Roolz!
;>)
Reabecca
D. Definataely!
Stay Tough All Day!
And every Day!
Keep it rolling ‘Becca
Sorry about the mispell Rebecca
Andrea- Yeah those two guys are huge. If I was the catcher and one of them ran into me, I would definitely have to be carted off the field. I would probably stop hurting in hmm, maybe a couple of years!!
Pete/CM Feng–You know we *won* yesterday, right?
3 for 27 in ‘07. We should all put it in our names then
Trento Thunder won tonight 10-5, winning the Eastern League crown. Prospect Dan McCutchen got the win. The Yankees have so many top notch pitching prospects it is hard to know what they are going to do with them all. Plus Tabata and Action Jackson. And I still have some hope for Eric Duncan, as I mus have picked up some of Rebecca’s optimism.
That is Trenton. I am a lousy typist.
J-Dawg: f that. If I were a catcher and someone like Eric Hinske or Mark Teixeira or, good lord David Ortiz, or GOD FORBID Manny came running toward me, I would hand the ball to the ump and run the hell out of there. You better believe I would have nothing to do with those beasts.
Rebecca,
What a great idea. I know we can count on you to lead us!! I choose A. Winning the WS is the goal. That is the reason why Yankees play so hard every year. I would love to see them to bring home #27. I don’t care if they win the wild car or division to get there. However, which every way Yankees choose, they still need to play hard every game like they are going to win the division.
LOL!! You’re right, that’s the best solution!!!
Well, when we go and clinch ourselves a playoff spot next week, we can all point to the beginning of the Optimism Era as the final push…
I like that screen name!
Sorry I meant Veinte y Siete. D’OH!
lol. reason #823747 I am not a baseball player. I believe another reason was when Melky slammed his face into the walla nd got up…I would have just sat there screaming for someone to help me and get an ice pack. And when Giambi planted his face in the dirt–same situation. Someone would have had to come help me up. And all these fools playing through the pain? no sir. You get me some codeine and let me be a drugged up fool in the dugout.
Anybody know if the Yankees and Tigers finish tied, they necessarily play a one game playoff or is there a tie breaker from the season series. I think it is the former but I am not sure. If it is, it would be at The Stadium on Monday after the last day of the regular season.
to Rebecca,

Sorry I had too much beer than usual today. Thanks for reminding me.
Man, you should have all seen me try to play sports! I was such an embarassment that my parents more or less forbid me from trying out from any of my high school teams!
to Rebecca,
“Pete/CM Feng—You know we won yesterday, right?

I am sorry.
Sorry I had too much beer than usual today. Thanks for reminding me.
Has anyone heard an update on Jorge. And I must say some people on this blog are quite vicious and nasty. I’m sure i’ll get flamed for making that comment as well.
The worst that I was ever hit was in 4th grade when I was playing basketball. I was in midair going for a layup and suddenly somebody knocked me to the ground hard. Ouch, I was loopy for a little while after that!
By the way, if you need a good laugh after today’s game, check out this video that was shot recently at the stadium. It is hilarious, guaranteed! (Even funnier than McCarver and that twerp who did the pay-by-play of Fox today.)
http://www.collegehumor.com/video:1774718
… that’s PLAY-by-play (boy do we need an edit feature!)
Jennifer- Looks like Jorge escaped with a headache. Dr. Jeter said that he would be fine!
Postscript to my post about Torre’s utterly inept handling of the pitching staff– did you see he had Joba warming up today? And leaving a laboring Wang in to face Ortiz who has a .500 BA against him? I mean Torre is a complete idiot when it comes to handling pitchers. Cash, please ease him out? PLEASSSSSE.
Dawg,
It’s “Veintisiete en ‘07″, not how you write it.
This Year:
Joba was not going to come in the game – the rules prohibit him from coming in during the middle of the inning.
He was just getting some work in – he hasn’t pitched since Wednesday.
Oh, did anyone else see Joba almost catch the home run ball? Brought a smile to my face, despite the 10-1 score.
No one seems to say this, but I bet I’m not alone in expressing that it IS a little bit underwhelming to make the playoffs as the Wild Card. It does feel a bit like getting in on a loophole, and winning the World Series that way, if it happens, will be grand, but a touch tainted. I’ll take it — don’t get me wrong; I’ll take it with great leaps of joy — but it won’t be the greatest of the 27 titles. I mean, given the choice of winning the division and the world series or the wild card and the world series, who wouldn’t take the former?
C’mon everyone.
Say it with me:
TWENTY SEVEN IN ‘07!
27 in 07
TWENTY SEVEN IN ‘07!
TWENTY SEVEN IN ‘07!
TWENTY SEVEN IN ‘07!
LET’S GO YANKEES!!
LET’S GO YANKEES!!
LET’S GO YANKEES!!
Montana Mike: It would be nice to win the division, but I think as long as they get the ring, I don’t think it really matters how. Ask the 04 Red Sox.
lol. I love this enthusiasm!
If you will it, it will happen!
Jim, the cardinal rule with relief pitchers is not to get them up unless they are comin in. I would like to believe he was just throwing to stay loose, but he is undoubtedly going to be needed tomorrow as Clemens goes 6 at most. So I cannot see the wisdom of him throwing today. And at least to my eye he was throwing with urgency. Bottom line, regardles of why he was up, he should not have been up, and in any case Torre is the absolutely wrong manager to lead a team with all this young pitching. I love Torre as a manager of egos and the like, but he is a bad in game strategist. He just is.
If the Yankees and Tigers finish the season tied there is a 1 game playoff and it will be in Yankee Stadium. A couple of weeks ago the Yankees won that “coin toss”
Hopefully, it won’t come down to a 1 game playoff, but it is impossible to ignore the obvious: Outside of 3 games with Cleveland, the Tigers have 10 games left with 3 teams that have absolutely packed it in for the season. A 10-3 (or better) finish by the Tigers from here on is a very real possibility, and that would put enormous pressure on the Yankees. Next weekend alone, the Yanks have to face Halladay, Marcum, McGowan and Burnett in succession.
The upcoming series’ beginning on Monday where Detroit plays 3 in Cleveland and the Yanks play 3 at home against Baltimore will tell the tale. If the Yankees can end Wednesday night up by 4 or 5 games I’ll be breathing a lot easier. If, however, Wednesday finds them up by only a game or 2, we are in terrible trouble.
One of the Joba rules is, if he gets up he comes in. Now I didn’t see the end of the game. but I would assume he was just throwing, not looking to get into the game.
We need to win tomorrow, bottom line. We can’t be looking to other teams for help, which we clearly won’t get. We have to win our games, and hope that everything works out in our favor.
_This loss goes to show that yesterday’s amazing comeback had no effect on the Sox, only their fans_
Cleveland is actually tied with Angels for the best record.
That Detroit Vs Cleveland series is crutial for the yanks. If Detroit wins that series it not only cuts into Wild Card lead it also comes into play for the 2nd best record between Cleveland & Angels.
Darrin, as I said in an earlier post, I agree with the fact that the next 4 days really will be dispositive. Cleveland has to do the job and we have to do what we have not been able to do with Baltimore all season. Fortunately, Bedard and Gutherie are gone for the season. But I am very concerned nonetheless because we seem to play to the level of competition sometimes. We’ll know Weddnesday night whether Rebecca’s optimism is accurate. I hope so, oh do I hope so. It is insufferable here in boston when bad things happen to the Yankees.
Twenty seven in ‘07! Lighten up JRVJ, I’m just having a little fun. I don’t mean anything by it at all, trust me!!
The next two weeks are crucial, but I’m already going to likely miss the games September 21, 23 and 30! The 21st is Kol Nidre, the 23rd I have a bridal shower and a four hour drive back to Syracuse (from NYC! YCCH!) and the 30th I’m going to the Jets game in Buffalo!
Ach!
Hopefully the Yanks can clinch the Wild Card before the 30th!
I don’t get the b.s. on Torre. He has Mattingly and Guidry there to help him during the game. I is not just his call, so if you are going to mash Torre, you have to mash the whole coaching staff for being inept. It is not just Torre in my opinion..
Night everyone. Time to go to bed since I had too much beer tonight. Lots works need to finish before the game so I can get ready to cheer for Clemens and Yankees.
One more time!
TWENTY SEVEN IN ‘07!
TWENTY SEVEN IN ‘07!
TWENTY SEVEN IN ‘07!
LET’S GO YANKEES!!
LET’S GO YANKEES!!
LET’S GO YANKEES!!
JRVJ, you’re right. For some reason, teachers down here taught me to say “Veinte y siete.” I just looked it up and veintisiete IS how to say it, so that’s my name now. Thanks!
27 in 07, I am all for it…PETER,,I will correct you now…the division is NOT lost….WHEN the Yankees win tomorrow….they will be back to 4 games back in the loss column with 13 games against pretty bad teams AND we will own the tiebreaker against The Idiots. Now I know that making up 4.5 games while playing 13 is not likely…it is NOT impossible and THESE ARE THE YANKEES and THEY ARE the IDIOTS and I’ll still take the Yankees Chances over the Idiots Chances until the Fat Lady Sings….OK ?
13, I agree that the coaching staff has some culpability, because nobody stands up to Torre on some of these absurd pitching related dscisions. That has been the case since Zim left unfortunately. But these actions/non-actions are indefensible. Even Pete said that “Torre + expanded rosters = Disaaster”. I love Torre and appreciate everything he has done. But he has to go. He cannot handle young players. That’s why “Joba Rules” exist to begin with. I am quite sure Cash was not happy to see Joba warming tonight.
Hey, anyone that wants a little understanding into the whole optimism thing is welcome to look:
http://puristbleedspinstripes......imism.html
Am going off to write now, so I’ll probably catch you all tomorrow!
TWENTY SEVEN IN 07!
Uncle Vito, you must be driving the Optimism Bus. I hope you are right, but I do not see it. We just have to win to get in(rhythmes, huh?) Screw the division. As Jetes says, we just have to win.
Rhymes, that is.
The Chief Idiot for the 2004 Red Sox now resides at Yankee Stadium.
The Assistant Idiot calls Camden Yards home.
The Red Sox of Mike Lowell, Dustin Pedroia, Coco Crisp, Jacoby Ellsbury and Co. are not Idiots. That era has passed.
I see what you mean This Year.. just frustrating sometimes.. as I am not into blaming anyone.. I just love the game and how it is played.. the intensity and the skill. Just don’t sound right that it is all Torre’s fault I guess
Man, trolls appear at the strangest times. But living here in b-town, it does not surprise me. Incredibly meanspirited, bitter people. Even worse for some reason since 2004. Good night and good luck– to the Yankees and us.
I’ll go w/ this as the 2007 motto
*HA!*
…..
27 in 07 because we stay tough all day.
That’s my vote
Did I see right, that Torre is gonna give Kennedy’s spot in the rotation back to Mussina ? That is just silly….IF and this is a big IF, you are going to give ANY spot to Mussina, it would be Hughes’ !!! They don’t want to pitch Wang on too much rest, but that should bump MOOSE and no-one else…I guess they may wait to see how Clemens’ comes through tomorrow ( which will be great )…but how you can put your faith back into Moose after one good start when IPK has been consistently strong is beyond me !
Boston players, fans and management have always been Idiots….Once they came out and actually named themselves that, it sticks forever ( sorry, I don’t make the rules, but ya gots to play by ‘em ! ) LOL
Vito,
Your prediction that the Yankees will end up in a tie with the Red Sox and therefore win the division is probably about as accurate as your repeated predictions that the Yankees would sweep the Red Sox this weekend.
“Once they came out and actually named themselves that, it sticks forever ( sorry, I don’t make the rules, but ya gots to play by ‘em ! ) LOL ”
– I think that Big Papi who came out and said that – “We’re just a bunch of idiots” was the quote. The Yankees have always been first class in how they approach things, Red Sox players and fans always seem to across as immature and mean.
ray, I am sure that you and all of the Boston fans, etc. will think that after we take 2 out of 3 from you and still have a chance to tie your for the division that we are TOTALLY OUT OF IT…right ?…Like smackin’ your team down Friday Night didn’t leave a mark, right ? You and all of your followers know that for more than 2/3 of the season, the Yankees have outplayed the BoSux….and chew on this, Batman….What has more weight going into the playoffs, your team starting 36-15 or your team finishing as lame as you have since that date ? Boston will be SUPER LUCKY to make it past ANY 1st round playoff series it gets and the Yankees have had the best record in baseball for quite some time now….We will LOVE to smoke you in the ALCS…it will be fun !
I agree, Vito – excellent POST. The Yanks are gonna smack them upside the head in the playoffs and in my mind, the playoffs start tomorrow. Clemens will set the tone by plunking the Lolipop Kid from Munchkinland, Pedroia and then shut them down for the next 6 innings, Joba for 6 dominant outs and then Mo to slam the door shut. That is how playoff baseball is done and has been done in the Bronx for the past 10 years.
Vito
You make me laugh. If Friday night’s game left a mark then you have to admit that todays beating of your ace certainly left a mark too.
“Dr. Acula:Check out these Sad-Sawks”
Posada said “great picture, both of them.. wait, there’s only one?”
Don’t you have a red sox site to go trolll on dr. acula?
“But living here in b-town, it does not surprise me. Incredibly meanspirited, bitter people.”
Pot, kettle, black.
Does uncle vito represent the average yankee fan? Because if he does, well, that’s really sad and a little hilarious.
I mean, please tell me he’s really a little kid staying up past his bed time. No way that’s a functioning adult, right?
I’m not sure if Vito represents the average Yankee fan or not.
All I know is that it is beyond ridiculous for *any* Yankee fan to be talking smack after the complete beatdown they took today.
True, the Yanks have played great ball since the ASB. And if you had asked me on July 1st if I would be happy to have a three game lead in the WC on Sept 16th I would have said “gladly.”
But there is a crapload of work to do just to win the wild card. And only but a few people around here even realize it. All I keep reading about on the blog is “We can still win the division!” and “Yes! Cleveland won again!”
First off, enough with the Cleveland garbage. Let me pose this hypothetical: What if the red hot Tigers go into Cleveland and sweep the Indians, and then with their ridiculously easy schedule, PASS Cleveland in the standings? Guess who the Yankees would then be battling for the wild card spot? Yes. Cleveland. Impossible scenario? Look at both teams remaining schedules. If Detroit sweeps Cleveland, the Tigers have an outstanding chance to win the AL Central. Either way, I sense that this WC battle will come down to the final game or two of the season.
Secondly, and it kills me to write this, but forget about the division. It’s over. It’s also irrelevant, because the Red Sox are in the playoffs no matter what, and the only real significance of winning the division would be to knock Boston out totally. The Yankees have 14 games left. Even if they play lights-out baseball and go, say 11-3 the rest of the way, Boston only would have to go 6-7 to wrap up the division.
None of this is a question of being pessimistic or optimistic — all that stuff is superstitious BS. It’s REALITY.
Darrin: no one said that being optimistic or being superstitious will win the division, and very few people (I hope) actually believe that the Yankees will win the divison-though after Friday’s win, I think everyone had a tiny glimmer of hope. Being optimistic and having faith is what being a fan is all about. It’s just about wanting the best for your team and having faith that they’ll do the best, and if they don’t, then you look at what they did that was good and you move on.
For example, last night’s game sucked, but you can say, “Hey, what a great play by Jorge blocking the plate. He’s got real heart.” That’s what being optimistic is about, for me anyway. And to me, that’s also realistic.
Jake, at 3:15 in the morning on a Yankees blog? What, did you come out of the Kells with only yourself and you just happened to come across this site instead of the chat line you were looking for? I mean, I’m sure you could have found something better to do at three in the morning, then come to a Yankees blog? Unless this is your sort of thing?
“Does uncle vito represent the average yankee fan? Because if he does, well, that’s really sad and a little hilarious.
I mean, please tell me he’s really a little kid staying up past his bed time. No way that’s a functioning adult, right?”
Boy, now that’s calling the kettle black? I mean, aren’t the only fans in Bawstan, drunk college kids? A Sawx fan on a Yankee blog at three in the morning represents the average Sawx fan, which is really hilarious and is a functioning adult, right?????
Win or lose tonight, at least the Yankees get out of silly and delusional Boston which is as tolerant and cosmopolitan as Billings, Montana.
To All….make fun as much as you want…nothing is over until we say it is over, Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor ? Germans ? Forget it, he’s on a roll…
…..Just because I have a never say die attitude and won’t concede the division to Boston until the race is over, means I am 8 years old….right ! And again to ALL, Trolls, Boston Fans and even the Yankee Fans that DON’T believe….I may be wrong, but although I agree NOT LIKELY….it IS possible that THESE BOSTON IDIOTS ( after losing today ) can go 6-6.( which is only slightly worse than they have been playing for a pretty significant time )..and we CAN go 11-2.( which again, is only 2 games better than the last 13 games we will have played at a 9-4 record and that 11-2 will need to come against Baltimore, Tampa and Toronto, three pretty bad teams that we do have the ablility to punish )…Figure it out….Yankees then Boston both finish 96-66 and the Yankees win the tiebreaker by virtue of winning the season series….So In summation ( that is before I head off to my paper route and 3rd Grade Sunday School….The Yankees need to treat the next 13 games after winning today, truly like they are playoff games…and with the caliber of team they are facing it is quite possible that they CAN go 11-2….Boston, on the other hand, AFTER losing 2 out of 3 to the Yankees and with the way they let Tampa push them around last series HAS the ability to finish 6-6…..NOT LIKELY….but STILL POSSIBLE….( Hold on, I think my Mommy is calling me….gotta run…see you all you functioning adults…I hope one day to reach your high and might level )
